Farmer Wilson walks over to Farmer Jones' place and says
"Jones, I got me a problem and I gotta to go to court - I need a lawyer, do you know any?" Farmer Jones replies, "yeah, I know a couple of those guys. One is a hell of a trial lawyer, great guy but expensive as hell; the other, not so great, but the guy sure knows how to pick a jury and he's a lot cheaper." Wilson thanks his buddy and moves on thinking to himself, well I don't have a lot of money so I guess I know what I have to do.

Wilson's day in court finally comes and the first witness called to the stand is his neighbor Mrs. Smith. Mrs. Smith is sworn in and the prosecuter asks her, "Mrs. Smith, would you please tell the court what you saw on the day in question. "Why yes I can", she says, "I was doing my dishes, looking out my window over the sink when I saw Farmer Wilson come out from behind his barn and grab one of his goats". Yes mam, and then what did you see? "Well after he grabbed that goat he proceeded to drop his pants and fornicate with that there goat!" Is that all mam? "Well no, after it seemed like he had his way with that goat, the goat turned around and proceeded to lick his pecker clean!"

It was at this point of the testimony that one man on the jury turns to another man on the jury and says "you know, a good goat will do that"..

AquaBuddha, meet BeerBuddha:

Ky. church: Sen. candidate Paul should retract remarks that beer would be thrown at its picnic

Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul has angered a small-town Kentucky church by saying he and other politicians who attended its fundraising picnic had to worry about having beer thrown on them.

Paul told conservative radio personality Sean Hannity Tuesday night that the picnic at St. Jerome Parish was wild and that people boo the politicians. He also said they worried beer and other objects would be thrown at them.

The picnic does not serve alcohol as it's in a dry area.

Parishioner Mark Wilson called for Paul to retract the unflattering comments. He said they might discourage families from attending the picnic.

The picnic has been a good fundraiser for the parish for 130 years. In that time, it has evolved as the traditional kickoff of the fall campaign season in Kentucky.

I learned today that junior instructors at Texas Tech have coined a new expression, "black helicopter parents." This refers to rightwing parents who complain that their little darlings flunked a course not because they missed class or failed to study, but because the instructor is conducting a political vendetta against "conserf-tive" families. Apparently this has become very common in recent years, with the substance of the complaints being traceable to the ravings of Rush Limbaugh, etc.

The unions (NJEA etc.) have been out against Christie's efforts to reform and improve schools because they demand more from the teachers - whether it is forgoing raises, limiting pensions/switching to 401ks, or perhaps most contentiously - merit pay.

Because you know that Einstein was interested in bringing down the Christian purity of white America back in 1905 when he came up with it. That's how foresighted those international Jews are.

The other sad thing is it really is only a matter of time from when they move from hating on Muslims to hating on Jews. That is not to diminish how terribly they are treating American Muslims or how wrong that is.

It's just that we Jews have heard this music before and we know how the piece ends.

The problem with measuring teacher productivity is that it assumes a one size fits all approach to education. Being ADD myself, I know that I would have done much better in a more hands on environment than sitting in a classroom studying the same material year after year.

I posted the video on my Facebook page and got a quick e-mail to this link where they claim Shirely expanded the Pigford payment.

I replied with this:

"GOP Sen. Grassley introduced legislation to reopen Pigford case "to allow more black farmers to join and to provide more funding to settle claims." Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) has sponsored or co-sponsored a number of bills seeking to allow more African American farmers to join the settlement of discrimination claims by USDA. According to a July 23 Time report:

[A]s a Senator[,] Obama had championed the black farmers' lawsuit against the USDA.

Along with Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Obama introduced legislation to reopen the case (that was initially settled in 1999) to allow more black farmers to join and to provide more funding to settle claims. The legislative language was added to the Farm Bill passed in 2008 and its inclusion led to a second Administration-negotiated settlement in February of this year for $1.15 billion. Yet the money to actually fund that settlement must be approved by Congress, and so far the House and Senate have only been able to vote for it as part of different pieces of legislation. The money will not be appropriated unless both chambers vote on a single bill that includes the funding."

Update on that other target game with a likeness of Obama -- in Seaside Heights, NJ:

Obama game now covered with plastic bag

SEASIDE HEIGHTS — For a $1 a throw, tourists on the boardwalk can get a chance to take out their frustrations over the direction of the country on an effigy of President Barack Obama.

Now, a video of the game has gone viral on the Internet and is provoking outrage on some blogs and websites, but the daytime manager at the amusement stand can't figure out what the fuss is all about.

"I guess some people do,'' Scott Simmons answered when asked whether some might find the Obama figure offensive. "Most people laugh and think it's funny. I voted for Obama.''

But by 1 p.m., "Lucky Leo's'' had placed a bag over Obama's head and shut off the carousel.

"I think it's inappropriate. It makes us look bad, in my opinion. It's the presidency in general, it wouldn't matter who was president,'' said Frank Frazetta, 53, of East Stroudsburg, Pa., who was with his 10-year-old daughter on the boardwalk...

Hillary for Vice President?

As President Obama sinks in the polls, Democrats and liberal pundits inevitably are searching for a scapegoat. The most likely victim appears to be gaffe-prone Vice President Joe Biden, who has become the focus of speculation that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton just might replace him on the 2012 Democratic ticket.

Former Virginia Gov. Doug Wilder, his state's first African-American governor, touched off the controversy. Writing at Politico.com last week, Mr. Wilder argued that Mr. Biden's tenure has been undistinguished and chock full of "too many YouTube moments." He charged that Mr. Biden "has continued to undermine what little confidence the public may have had in him."

By way of contrast, Mr. Wilder says that Hillary Clinton has excelled in her role. "Clinton has been nothing but a team player who has earned good marks since being asked to serve as secretary of state." Having Mrs. Clinton join the 2012 ticket, he said, would revive the Democratic Party and reestablish the party's working-class voters who found her appealing during the 2012 primaries against Mr. Obama.

Pundits jumped on Mr. Wilder's comments and expressed near-universal approval. On his syndicated national show, Chris Matthews of MSNBC assembled a panel to discuss the Wilder intervention. Howard Fineman of Newsweek, a longtime Hillary watcher, said Mrs. Clinton would accept a place on the 2012 ticket "in a second." John Heilemann, a reporter New York magazine, said the major obstacle would be to "figure out a way for Biden to slide aside happily" and suggested that Mr. Biden replace Mrs. Clinton as Secretary of State.

Along the way, Mr. Heilemann outlined why President Obama just might want to have a steadier hand at his side for his re-election campaign: "The Republican attack on Obama is going to revolve around 'too liberal,' but also 'too incompetent.' . . . They're going to say, 'Look, you hired this guy. He was too young for this job. He didn't know what he was doing. He didn't have the experience, and look what's happened.'"

Hmmm. Sounds a lot like the campaign Mrs. Clinton ran against Barack Obama in 2008, complete with that infamous commercial asking voters who they wanted in the White House when a 3 a.m. crisis call came in.

Hehe, well I have been coding C# for 4 years now, about 15 years total coding experience. I have been coding VB since VB3, so I understand VBA, but with SQL and whatnot, Access programming makes me cry. I don't have a nice IDE, and I'll be damned if I can remember what all the ADO objects do anymore without some intellisense prompting.

Access is like dating a supermodel..it's pretty but temperamental. It does make a very good front end for databases, since a lot of the stuff you have to code yourself in VB is already built in in Access.

I can pull data out of just about any data source I want to using ODBC and pass through queries. Writing requires a little work sometimes, but otherwise it works pretty smooth.

Meanwhile, Ned Lamont is losing in his primary bid to be Gov in CT.

And in other news - Rand Paul claims that he isn't a libertarian (no shock there), but is a constitutional conservative (which makes little sense when he's quite willing to ignore vast parts of the Constitution and accumulated jurisprudence).

He keeps talking about how the Founders were into limited government, even as the Federalists were busy calling for a strong central government to rectify all the problems with the articles of confederation.

White House spokesman blasts liberal critics

'They will be satisfied when we have Canadian healthcare and we've eliminated the Pentagon,' Robert Gibbs tells a newspaper in remarks that bring a festering disenchantment into the open.

Festering tensions between the White House and liberal activists flared Tuesday, with presidential Press Secretary Robert Gibbs scolding what he called "the professional left" for its vocal objections to President Obama's record.

In an interview with the Hill newspaper, the president's chief spokesman voiced disdain for liberal critics who've likened Obama to former President George W. Bush.

"These people ought to be drug tested," Gibbs said. "They will be satisfied when we have Canadian healthcare and we've eliminated the Pentagon. That's not reality. They wouldn't be satisfied if Dennis Kucinich was president."
Later in the day, Gibbs put out a statement saying he had spoken "inartfully."

"I watch too much cable, I admit," he said.

Still, the dust-up underscored the tough political position in which the president finds himself. Left and right are unhappy with him, narrowing the political base that Obama needs to pass legislation and avoid losses in the November midterm election.

Until this point, Obama and liberal activists have largely minimized their disagreements in public. But Gibbs' comments could strain the uneasy alliance, ushering in a period where mutual disenchantment is voiced more openly.

The backlash against Gibbs was swift. One congressman, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.), called on him to resign.

Good question. I'd say its because the LA Sheriff's department has a standing policy of handling celebrities with kid gloves. Etymology
American English student slang 1954; perhaps navy slang before that. Expert sense popularized in the Clinton administration, 1993.

Origin uncertain, possibly from wonky (“shaky, unreliable”) or wank, wanker [1], or simply expressive.

[edit]Noun
wonk (plural wonks)

(derogatory) An overly studious person, particularly student; a nerd.
(by extension) A policy wonk or other intellectual expert.

I don't think vitriol is necessary, it's more useful to show their arguments to be the fluff that they are with wit and sarcasm. Ridicule is much more useful. But you got to be able to make that resonate with the very people who are swallowing the bull shit without even needing any ketchup.

The Bush Tax Cuts should expire as written! LOL

That graph is neat and all, but there really is no way to say with certainty the Bush Tax cuts were that much of a negative impact on the deficit. Right after 9/11 the economy was on the verge of collapse. The tax cuts helped instill confidence in our economy.

They probably led to increased spending (and tax revenue) when some people were ready to horde their money and buy mass quantities of gold.

"The Right" are not all batshit crazy. Besides, there is too much political anger and confrontation out there now. Getting someone in who will "tear the GOP a new one" will not help things. Calm is needed. Someone who can be a peacemaker. More anger and vitriol will make matters worse.

They may not be all batshit crazy, but the standard bearers, the guys who are using their time in the limelight to slowly twist the GOP into an institute of bigotry, racism, and sexism, are. And continuing to feed the crocodile, hoping it'll eat you last, will only give them the "breathing room" they need to make the changes permanent. This Administration needs to do more than simply shake their heads, they need to confront such darkness and hatred, shine a spotlight on it, and call it for what it is.

At the very least I support government spending during a recession since I honestly believe it's foolish to believe the free market will fix what it f***ed up on its own any time soon.

Charles, and Walter are under their own names, as far as I know. But do be warned there are real LGF stalkers out there who have tried to harass and intimidate. It's a very personal choice.

You know, I am fine with that. I don't mind stating my mind under scrutiny. They have to break my "friend" barrier first. As strongly as I feel about things, I also don't have anything to hide. The worst they can do is post "tea bagger" posts on my walls... Somehow, I doubt my place of employment will care.

Nuh-ah! You take that back!

Reality is a president will leave behind a legacy. Their policies may take decades to really feel the impact. Ergo - It was really Clinton's economic policies that led to the financial meltdown. Bush Jr. failed to react in time to prevent it, and Obama looks to be doubling down and making it far worse.

We really won't feel the pain / benefit of Obamanomics for decades.

My point is that government spending which increases employment (preferably on infrastructure type work) means that more people are working, persumably spending their paychecks [since they have been un or under employed] and that increase in consumer spending gets the economic engine running again. Most of the mainline economists, like Paul Samuelson, seem to go with that program. For certain, the Regan "down from the top" theory that justified the Bush tax cuts turned out not to work.

The growth is almost always a surprise, driven by industry or circumstance. The Feds can slow or screw up the economy far easier than accelerate it. They can get in the way or stay out of the way. They can build the interstates or the internet. But what happens after that is up to industry and us individuals.

Well, I have to say that I've encountered every other kid of nut parent, but I think I'm fairly safe from this kind at a small Catholic elementary school in Northern California.

That must be a genuine treat, and I'm sure it sets the kids up to be real self-reliant adults who accept that sometimes actions have consquences.

I believe I learned many things before Obama. Then I was to forget them all after he was elected. The basic message I know now, is that no matter how many people want jobs, there are millions of spaces to fill them. I should just ignore the numbers and remember that people making anything over $20k a year are now really excited to make this small amount! And damn it EVERYONE on unemployment makes $20k a year regardless of previous wages. And they want to live this way forever.

SHAME ON THEM!

This stuff is not a magic pill, it takes some time, and the stimulus has been quite small in comparison to the amount of money lost in just the housing crash. Personally, I'd like to see a jobs program from the feds to put hundreds of thousands of people to work for a three year stint. Note also that while I believe that the Bush policy's were to blame for the crash, no one in their right mind would imply the downturn was deliberate, "to blame" means more that the outcome was not forseen.

Part of it is that the recession gave many companies an excuse to make cuts they were either considering or were holding off on. Increased automation and the slow march of technological progress has made entire sections of businesses obsolete. What you get is a glut of middle-skilled, middle-wage jobs that are too qualified for unskilled labor, but not skilled enough to take up jobs needing various certifications or degrees.

There's thousands of job openings out there, but either too few of those with the necessary skills or too many who are actually overskilled.

Back in its heyday, the Soviet Union had such concepts as "politically correct vegetables." Cabbage for example was a righteous veggie for Reds because it yielded a high nutritional value relative to the resources put into producing it. Lettuce, on the other hand, was a bourgeois affectation and therefore subversive.

Wingnuts remind me of this when they start finding not just political significance, but conscious political intent, in nearly everything.

There's a scary scene in "Red Scarf Girl" where the narrator and her little friends, at the opening of the Cultural Revolution, are choosing new names for stores as they walk down the street, because the current ones are insufficiently revolutionary. Later, they're pleased when the authorities actually pick some of their names.

Because this "Republicans warned about the bubble" is complete bullshit. In fact, most Republicans in Congress, as well as supply-siders, denied the existence of a bubble right up until the financial meltdown.

The housing crisis had many fathers from both parties -- but both the economic policy of the Bush Administration (cutting taxes, encouraging consumption) and the Alan Greenspan Fed didn't just do nothing to combat it. Just in case you don't have enough doom in your day:

New superbugs spreading from South Asia: study

Plastic surgery patients have carried a new class of superbugs resistant to almost all antibiotics from South Asia to Britain and they could spread worldwide, researchers reported Wednesday.

Many hospital infections that were already difficult to treat have become even more impervious to drugs thanks to a recently discovered gene that can jump across different species of bacteria.

This so-called NDM-1 gene was first identified last year by Cardiff University's Timothy Walsh in two types of bacteria -- Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli -- in a Swedish patient admitted to hospital in India.

Worryingly, the new NDM-1 bacteria are resistant even to carbapenems, a group of antibiotics often reserved as a last resort for emergency treatment for multi-drug resistant bugs.

Recommend reading the whole thing.

Don't you think it's more likely that low interest rates promulgated by the FED lead to the housing bubble? That's what Greenspan admits at the end of his book. Bush did not want to reign in rates, because that would have slowed the economy. He made other economic mistakes too, but the housing crash was the worst, since it triggered a collapse. Financing tax reductions with deficit spending was a dumb idea in the long run too.

re: #414 Nimed

Because this "Republicans warned about the bubble" is complete bullshit. In fact, most Republicans in Congress, as well as supply-siders, denied the existence of a bubble right up until the financial meltdown.

The housing crisis had many fathers from both parties -- but both the economic policy of the Bush Administration (cutting taxes, encouraging consumption) and the Alan Greenspan Fed didn't just do nothing to combat it. They both amplified the crisis and left the Treasury with a giant deficit before the current depression.

Everyone forgets about the people who made huge bank off the bubble. The real estate agents, the appraisers, the mortgage brokers, the middleman banks. They new damn well they were signing up people for a adjustable mortgage that would end up beyond their means. They didn't care. Commissions baby, free market and all that.

So did Bush, and he blew the surplus and then ran up credit card bills, and watched the economy do a nose dive in his last weeks in office.

Your point being?

agreed...the point is Clinton doesn't deserve any credit for a strong economy, and years later Bush squandered it...I've made that point several times

re: #607 Stanley Sea

No, nothing at all to do with a Mosque. That's the demagoguery. All you need to do is replace it with "Temple" This type of talk is not and should not be allowed, regardless of religion.

How we gave it all up, 9+ years later after the terrorist attack blows me away.
Very dangerous shit happening, again.

To be fair, if the actual neighbors had an actual concern, then of course the mosque committee should sit down with them and go over it. Some things you can fix.

A lizard from TN mentioned some concern about the mosque in his area having a cemetery attached, and apparently people are worried because Muslim burial customs traditionally don't use coffins. That's, I think, a worry based in ignorance, but it's easy to fix, you get the community leaders in for coffee and introduce them to the funeral home you use.

Now, some things you can't fix. When the synagogue down the street from my mom rebuilt, there were about a bazillion meetings, during which the synagogue employees and board explained exactly what was going on and calmed everyone's fears, and explained why there wasn't a problem, and we still had people having little freakouts, and there was nothing to do except rebuild the shul anyway. It looks horrible, IMHO, but it's won some awards, and there you go.

So if New York Dolls Strip Club is worried that the call to prayer will disrupt their patron's hangovers, there should be a meeting. OTOH, people from outside Manhattan having cows is not something the mosque can or should do anything about.

For example, single payer is a position you bring to the table to negotiate down from.... forcing rape victims to undergo vaginal probing if they want an abortion... you shouldn't even joke about/bring that to the table even if you do it while arguing in bad faith.

I believe that in the original legend, the zombie is controlled by its creator, who can send it on errands. Sort of a golem made from a human body.

The movie version is a bit different. I think it's a total community crisis quality of the 'zombie invasion' that appeals.

My favorite zombie movie is "Shaun of the Dead". My favorite not-so-well-known zombie movie is "Chopper Chicks In Zombie Town", which features a lesbian biker gang and blind children as well as zombies--and the hilarious moment when the bikers are left to fight the zombies alone, because the townspeople knew 'em when they were alive, "and they were good folks".

re: #697 daddylawbucks

tell me again how abortion relates to my organs? (since Im not female)

Simple.

In the grand scheme of things... lets assume a fetus has the same rights as any living human being.

Now assume a living human being tried to do the same thing to you that a fetus did...

They tried to make use of your organs, feeding off your body to survive because their own couldn't support them.

We have to keep abortion legal, because if we don't then it establishes a president that your organs are not your own to choose with if it would mean saving someones life.

Its a cruel necessity but a necessity none the less... because if we establish that people can make use of other people's organs against their will... then it basically sets a president where bums can come to your door and demand that you give them one of your kidneys if you have two healthy ones and they would die without a transplant.

I'm being a bit hyperbolic, but look up the "Violinist Argument" and you can see how even if we recognize a fetus as a human being with all the same rights as a fully grown person, that doesn't make abortion murder and it doesn't justify outlawing it...

Yeah, women are concerned trolls in response to those who support (in their round about way) laws that infringe against our bodies.

Defend you must, but I don't think you actually agree with the original take.

You know, it's one thing not to take being insulted too personally or seriously. It's another to watch other people being mocked for being pissed off when it happens.

1. In the grand scheme of things... lets assume a fetus has the same rights as any living human being. It doesn't. That's why abortion is not murder, a fetus is not a person, at least not during the period when it may be aborted.

2. I think the better argument is that every woman should be able to make her own choice, as opposed to some bureaucrat in DC making it for her.

3. This is at the essence a question of religious belief, and keeping the Guvmt out of religion means each woman must be allowed to make her own choice.

Maybe so, but I choose to argue this way because I think its more convincing on the whole, because it gives most of the people with a moral objection to Abortion what they "want" recognition of the Fetus as a human being, and then goes onto prove why they're still "wrong" for wanting to outlaw abortion.

It makes it purely a matter of logic and reason rather than one with some nebulous grey area of "at what point do we give the Fetus some human rights' and so and so forth...

re: #688 SanFranciscoZionist

I believe that in the original legend, the zombie is controlled by its creator, who can send it on errands. Sort of a golem made from a human body.

Great analogy. A sorcerer would just grab a body and do his thing and presto, undead servant. But let's face it, the original zombies are relatively boring.

The movie version is a bit different. I think it's a total community crisis quality of the 'zombie invasion' that appeals.

Yeah, the state of emergency is an essential ingredient (one of the hilarious things in "Shaun" is how long the protagonist takes to be aware of the state of emergency).

The infectious nature of the zombie "plague" is also a near indispensable element IMO, and a source of many of the genre tropes -- the horror of seeing your family or friends (or just pleasant strangers) savagely attack you, the tension that comes from someone in the group that has been bitten but hasn't turned already.

:D I'll have to see "Chopper Chicks...".

anti abortion people (IMHO) are power hungry, since for the most part they presonally are not going to be impacted by making abortion illegal, they seek to exert their power over women in general. I see it as similar to asking them to wear a Berqua.

No disagreement there, its just when you strip away the fact that they're concerned about innocent life (as my argument does) it makes what is going on all the more clear....

re: #645 SanFranciscoZionist

Well, I may be getting Perot mixed up with Dana Carvey's spoof of same. :-)

However, in response to Steve's earlier post, the unemployment rate for the years 1988 through 1990 was about 5.5% -- but it went up to 6.8% in 1991 and 7.5% in 1992.

I confess to burning through way too many brain cells during my extended childhood, but I just don't see a 2% spike in the unemployment rate in two years as an indication that the "economy [was] chugging along just fine."
