Man it's brutal when someone who doesn't know a thing about law or criminal justice tries to argue against hate crime legislation with a bunch of mumbojumbo talking points

Ahh, pet peeves

I agree with Wyatt Cenak - Dr. Laura's use of the "N" word was about the least racist and offensive thing she said in that whole diatribe. That is, the other parts were way worse!

You gotta love the "they say it all the time in HBO" argument.

They throw slime on people on Nickelodeon, too. But you don't see adults dumping buckets of green goo on each other in polite company. (rhetorically, maybe, but not literally)

In that case, I'd like mine, please?

Actually, if you look around the Internet... I would advise safe mode, however. After being in the business 15 years, there are few surprises anymore...

We have managed to acquire $13 trillion of debt on our balance sheet... and in my view we have nothing to show for it. We haven’t invested in our roads, our bridges, our waste-water systems, our sewer systems. We haven’t even maintained the assets that our parents and grandparents built for us.

31 HappyWarrior  Wed, Aug 25, 2010 1:55:12pm

Daily Show nails it again. Love the chemistry that Oliver and Cenac have with each other. Both are funny dudes. Agree with Wyatt too that the use of the word was the least offensive thing Dr. Laura did. Telling the woman she shouldn't marry interracially if she can't take racial insults is bullshit and screw Palin for defending her and comparing this to Shirley Sherrod.

well, my city is invested in roads, repaving streets (I can only assume they're doing something worthwhile to the pipes or power lines under the streets).

Unfortunately, they're doing it from 8pm-1am, right below my windows. Which I like to keep open in this weather...

No, no... when they get to the pipes and power phase of the project you will know it. That's when they rip up the new pavement and replace it with large metal plates. /

Does it ever occur to these people on the right who get in social trouble (not legal trouble) for saying hateful things that when they claim their First Amendment rights are being violated, that they are trying to defend the use of hate speech? Set aside, for the moment, whether or not the government is taking away their First Amendment rights. They are defending the use of hate speech. Hate speech. And yet they claim not to be hateful people.

Well, it's a valid question whether the First Amendment should protect hate speech. It's just interesting that they'd make themselves the object of that discussion.

re: #39 elbruce

I know that the SCOTUS has invented exceptions to free speech. Personally, I do not see how the First Amendment derived such exceptions (including yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater. There is no theater in the Constitution.) But the point is that they have said there are limits. You can't defraud people by lying about they are giving you money for. You can't incite people to riot. And I also think they said that "Fightin' words" are not protected speech. And, of course, fucking obscenity. As long as they don't incite to riot or defame people, it's very probably protected speech. I am not arguing about their right to say these stupid, ignorant, hateful things. I just wonder if they understand that they are not just defending "free speech", they are defending the right to say hate speech?
