And Now, International Not Burning a Quran Day

Wingnuts • Views: 2,296

Hate preacher Terry Jones has decided he’s calling off “Burn a Quran Day.”

But of course, he can’t cancel his bigotfest without putting a deranged spin on it.

Saying he got a “sign from God,” the fanatical Florida pastor who whipped up international fury by threatening a Koran burning called it off Thursday.

The Rev. Terry Jones said he cancelled the book burning scheduled for Saturday after he was told by the imam behind the controversial Islamic Center that they would not build it near Ground Zero.

Jones added that he would fly up to New York on Saturday for the ninth anniversary of 9/11 and meet with the imam, Feisal Abdul Rauf.

“The American people as a whole do not want the mosque at the Ground Zero location,” Terry said. “He agreed to move that.”

Actually, no, he didn’t.

Shortly after Terry spoke, NBC and Reuters reported there was no deal to move the Islamic center from it’s proposed site several blocks from Ground Zero.

UPDATE at 9/9/10 2:54:39 pm:

From the Park51 Twitter feed:

Official: It is untrue that Park51 is being moved. The project is moving ahead as planned. What is being reported in the media is false.

UPDATE at 9/9/10 3:09:51 pm:

Are you kidding me?

According to NBC News White House Correspondent Savannah Guthrie, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates called Jones Thursday afternoon and urged him not to go through with the plan.

Stupid…or hopeful? They’ve been basically working against the Cordoba House since this whole thing began. Why? Because the longest that there was “controversy,” the longer they could keep people tuning in to watch the blow by blow.

If anything, they’ll be thrilled by this news, if only because it keeps things going forward.

I think someone told Preacher Jones just how much he’d have to pay in fines if he so much as lit a match near a Quran and he decided he’d be best served by spending that money on Keystone.

Yeah, but it’s like Paterson stepping in with his “offer” to help them relocate, the bigots will hold it up as Rauf not wanting to “build bridges” because they’re turning down perfectly “reasonable” offers in order to push their “mosque” forward.

Oh dear, this is insanely brilliant by this wackjob. He claims that he got the imam to move the center, which of course he didn’t. The rightwingers get to claim moral equivalence between the two (the center being built in its proposed location and the Quran burning). Then the imam announces that no such deal is brokered, and this guy goes ahead with the book burning and the rightwing gets to blame the ensuing violence on the imam and not Pastor Dickweed!

Unintentional three dimensional chess by the Republican party. Good grief.

Nah, I’m going with the theory posted downstairs, that Jones realized how deeply buried in shit he’d managed to get himself and has chosen an “out” by claiming that Rauf meeting with him is really an agreement to move the Center.

Pretty much. With first Paterson and now Trump making such “generous” offers, on the stipulation that the center be built elsewhere, the bigots will play up any decision to leave as “proof” that this was all about ginning up controversy in order to make some money off the “unsuspecting infidels.”

Some Christians, like Terry Jones, are just as extreme as the extremist Muslims. I suppose Imam Rauf, accustomed to Muslim extremists, may find Jones to be just as distasteful.

People like Jones and Pamela Geller exhibit typical cowardly bully behavior. They’re all dressed up and ready to go to code red… then they get a phone call from a government official, or the FBI, or whoever, and it suddenly changes to “little old me? I wouldn’t dream of offending anybody.”

The problem, as far as I am concerned is that the initial PR was amateur.

Instead of being an Islamic Community Center, Rauf should have positioned it as a Community Center under Muslim aegis, in the same way 92nd Street Y positions itself.

Had the project just been called Park51, I believe a lot of this might have been avoided.

Three good news stories in one day:
1. Asshole preacher cancels Qu’ran burning
2. Stem Cell Research ban stayed by courts
3. Voinovich says he’ll break the GOP filibuster and support the Small Business Bill

And one of my co-workers brought in a bag of lemons from his tree…Lemonade!

The Voinovich story is a good one indeed.
and yum, I love making fresh lemonade.

96 That's Mr. Donald Trump To You  Thu, Sep 9, 2010 3:30:50pm

My people are informing me that Jones is embarrassed and “feels screwed by that Trump guy” and will be burning toupees on Saturday.

This is an outrage.

No. That toupee needs burning in the worst way.

(Off his head, of course.)

I honestly don’t think it’s Rauf’s fault that so many of our prominent conservative leaders are bigoted assholes. Blaming bad PR for the stupidity of racists like Geller and the networks (Fox, MSNBC, CNN) that helped whip up this outrage makes no sense at all.

If one toupee is burned I fear for the safety of this dog.

Maybe- but the bad PR really greased the rails on this deal.

This was a made for TV train wreck- and it’s ongoing.

From a service member FB friend:

the afghans don’t understand our culture at all. They think the president by not stopping this (he really can’t) condones this action. By condoning this action, they think that all we have told them is lies. If they see it on the news, they see it as the government endorsed truth. They don’t understand the contradictory nature of our government and culture. It is a serious issue for them and we will loose a lot of ground for what we have done over there. Troops (and aircrews) will be in greater danger over there.

I imagine the talk that Secretary Gates had with this moron went something like this:

Gates: “Mister Jones, you are an idiot’s idiot. Of course the Constitution guarantees your right to be even stupider then you are…”

Jones: “Sir…”

Gates: “Stand down, mister. I’m here to tell you today that you are endangering the lives of people around the world. And I’m also here to tell you that President Bush, whom you claim to admire, has asked me to personally convey his contempt for you as a man, an American, and a Christian…”

Jones: “Mister Secret…”

Gates: “Shut up! Do you really think I have nothing better to do than talk to imbeciles like you? I’m telling you as one American to another that you are a low-life, a stupid worm, and unfit to serve breakfast in bed to Lynndie England. If you think I’m kidding, I’ll get her on the line for you, too, you crawling maggot! Now, this is what you’re going to do: you’re going to make up some lame excuse about God talking to you through your fillings, or whatever, and you’re going to shut this show down. And if you think you’re being threatened, you’re right. This is a secure line, and no one will ever know what I just said to you, just like no one will find your body unless you do as you’re told.”

let’s just build a giant fence around the south, then dump all the religious extremists in there and give them all flamethrowers

Hey, I live in Atlanta!

Just give me enough notice (6 months) and I can go along with that plan.

Your articulate rebuttal and your brain dead echo chamber indicate to me that you are ok with our orwellian future where government officials can harass and intimidate private citizens who are breaking no laws if their behavior doesn’t conform to their notion of political correctness. As I thought.

Voinovich is retiring from the Senate after this year and doesn’t give a crap about what anyone thinks. He’s one tough hombre, had to be in order to be successful as a Republican from northeast Ohio, a traditional Democratic stronghold. Kudos to him!
