Tech Note: jQuery 1.5, Take 2
Tonight I’m pleased to announce that I’ve reinstalled jQuery 1.5, the latest version of the world’s best Javascript framework. I did some debugging and discovered that the problem I experienced earlier this week was caused by a jQuery plugin I was using to fix the transparency in PNG images, for Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.
So I eliminated that plugin, and now jQuery 1.5 seems to work fine. If you’re still using Internet Explorer 6, I feel for you, and you’ll probably notice that some of our graphics now look weird, starting with the LGF logo; the backgrounds won’t be transparent, because IE 6 (and 5.5) did not properly support alpha transparency in PNG files. (That’s what the plugin fixed, by employing a heinous kludge that offended every fiber of my being.)
In testing IE 6 I also noticed some other small details that don’t work right, or don’t display correctly, but overall LGF’s features still work even in this ancient, buggy abomination of a browser.
But I’m not going to be supporting pre-7.0 versions of Internet Explorer any more, and there may come a day when LGF completely stops working in those browsers.
Internet Explorer 6 is a zombie. Zombies are bad news. The best thing you can do is to get away from Internet Explorer as fast as you can.
The new version of jQuery, however, has some significant speed improvements and new features I’m looking forward to exploring.
