Gaddafi May Be Ready to Fold His Tent

‘Feelers’ have been ‘extended’
World • Views: 31,286

There are signs tonight that Muammar Gaddafi may be trying to arrange a safe bail-out for himself and his family.

(Reuters) - Members of Muammar Gaddafi’s entourage are putting out feelers to seek a ceasefire or safe passage from Libya, according to U.S. and European officials and a businessman close to the Libyan leadership.

Messages seeking some kind of peaceful end to U.N.-backed military action or a safe exit for members of Gaddafi’s entourage have been sent via intermediaries in Austria, Britain and France, said Roger Tamraz, a Middle Eastern businessman with long experience conducting deals with the Libyan regime.

Tamraz said Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Muammar’s eldest son, and Abdullah Senoussi, the Libyan leader’s brother-in-law, were the most prominent Gaddafi entourage members involved in seeking ways to end the fighting.

Sure would be tragic if that got messed up and the whole entourage crashed into the Mediterranean.

OT, but related:

The man suspected of murdering PC Yvonne Fletcher outside the Libyan embassy in London in 1984 has been arrested by rebel forces in the country and is in custody in the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

I suppose the negotiations will in large part center around how much money he can keep.

Nothing was stopping him a week ago; two weeks ago; or three weeks ago - and several hundred dead and thousands injured (and hundreds of thousands displaced), but now that he’s in financial trouble ($30 billion+ seized), he’s realizing the gig is up…

Better late than to continue fighting a war that the Libyans don’t want (and they don’t want Khadafi either).

The Colonel won’t go. I expect him to die in Libya as he promised he would. Saif who has spent significant time in the West and was educated outside Libya, knows that his time has come. HIs father’s antics have cost him his credibility on the world stage and a his luxurious international lifestyle. Expect him to cut whatever deal he can.

That’s sort of my point. All of this dash up that is happening in the Middle East is ripe for fuck ups. Don’t get the wrong impression, I’m all for these people getting “freedom.” But this random, wildfire sort of revolutions are going to allow a big opening for those with interest other than “freedom.” Currently, in almost all the cases across the middle east, there isn’t strong coalitions or political entities than can fill these opening… none that have a real interest in the people.

This is not going to shake out easily, and it actually may turn out for the worst when all is said and done.

I don’t have any answers, but currently I have no reason to look at this whole thing pessimistically… but that’s just my opinion.

It’s a bad situation due to the Saudi’s, there. I would very much like to see a strong revolution in Saudi Arabia towards a more Western government. Unfortunately, they would probably go further jihadi/wahabi/right wing.

I don’t disagree. I really don’t like interfering with another sovereign state’s progress, but Rwanda, the Balkans and Darfur suggest that sometimes stepping in is preferable to watching massive death. The problem is in deciding which situations should be entered. In the case of Libya, the rebels asked for a specific type of help, as did some of the surrounding countries making the decision easier.

I don’t and I dare say you don’t. Hating is never comfortable; for very long anyway.

The basic difference between atheists and believers is that the majority of atheists started out as believers, or at the very least agnostics. They have the advantage of perspective.

I get your point, and hate is probably too strong a word. I do find the power religion has over the religious disgusting, especially when it’s used to inculcate hate and fear in kids. I have no problem with the average religious believer, but like you I have a strong dislike for many of the leaders who preach anti-social behaviour.

Indiana Prosecutor Encouraged ‘False Flag’ Assault On Walker To Discredit Wisconsin Unions

A deputy prosector in Johnson County, Indiana, has resigned his job after it was revealed that in February, during the large protests in Wisconsin over Gov. Scott Walker’s anti-public employee union bill, he e-mailed Walker’s office and recommended that they conduct a “false flag operation” — to fake an assault or assassination attempt on Walker in order to discredit the unions and protesters.

As Wisconsin Watch, a project of the Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism reports, Carlos Lam initially denied that he had sent the e-mail, which was part of the tens of thousands of e-mails released in an open-records settlement the Walker administration reached with the local paper the Isthmus and the Associated Press.

When contacted by Wisconsin Watch, Lam had initially denied sending the e-mail, claiming that he had been the victim of identity theft, and said he did not support the criminal activities described in the e-mail: , “I think he’s trying to do what he has to do to get his budget balanced. But jeez, that’s taking it a little bit to the extreme.”

However, Lam admitted late in the afternoon that he did send the e-mail, and resigned his job.

She had me meet her with a friend in her room just the one time to make sure I saw it.
Pretty darn far from middle america, for damn sure.

Sounds like a DELIGHTFUL person. Imagine waking up and seeing that every morning.

Many years later, I am more sympathetic to this girl than I was at the time. She was a jerk, but she was a very sheltered rich girl who found herself, pretty much overnight, in an entirely different world, and was torn between PAR-TAY! and an image of herself as a dignified and regal Muslim woman of the modern age—and being eighteen, she tried for both at once, and kind of screwed it up.

However, she did behave like a complete bee-yotch to my friend. Once lobbed a can of hairspray at T., and when confronted said that she got to beat the servants at home. Her father made her go to a women’s college for undergrad, but I don’t think he understood exactly how little that meant in terms of access to temptation.

I think, instead of the nice Chinese-American girl from California who’d made it in through hard work and judicious scholarship applications, and was trying to be kind to everyone, they should have put the roommate in with some bitchy confident old-money New Englander, and let them fight it out over cultural superiority.

In our local news today, a helicopter leaving a rig tipped over into the water; a bit of video is here. and the ad plays after the video so you don’t have to suffer through it first.

And an 18-wheeler tipped over on the interstate and was hanging off an access ramp.

Doesn’t appear there were anything but minor injuries in both incidents. Amazing.

I would have thought a Saudi gal going to school in England would expect most of her classmates to be Christian.

Actually, there were quite a few Muslim kids from Jordan, Oman, Saudi, Turkey, and I think Bahrain.
It was an American owned university in England and accepted international students, mostly those that did not have the grades to get into Oxford or Cambridge.
They were all from wealthy families. There were also a couple guy students from Spain and Italy who were trying to avoid conscription back home.
Two of the nicest kids were Sonja from Turkey and Georges from Greece. Very, very sweet and gentle people, but they always kept a good 10 feet apart from each other. Same circle of friends, but they gave each other the fish eye and didn’t speak.
I had a “well duh” moment a year or so later when I read about the history between the two countries.

Ladysmith refers to the 19th century diamond boom town in what’s now SAfrica

Actually, Ladysmith was not the diamond town. The Diamond town was Kimberly in Cape Colony. Ladysmith was well to the east in Natal. Named after the Spanish wife British colonial commissioner Sir. Harry Smith had brought home from the Peninsular War, it was the principal British garrison town in Natal. Both towns were besieged in 1899-1900 during the Boer war, and initial British attempts to relieve them produces two serious defeats at Madgersfontein and Colenso. Coupled with another British defeat at Stormberg Junction, these three defeats gave the week they happened in the name “Black Week”.

Rightwing bloggers are going completely apoplectic over this new story out of Iowa:

Critics: Iowa terror drill portrays immigration foes as killers

The exercise scenario describes shootings occurring after rising tensions in the community because of an influx of minorities, Reed said. The newcomers, some who are American citizens and some who are illegal immigrants, were to have moved into a rural area from urban areas in search of more-affordable living. The newcomers are not welcomed by racial extremists, and controversy sweeps the community, he said.

One of the fictional suspects involved in the shootings is described an 18-year-old white male with a quick-tempered father who is a firearms enthusiast with ties to an underground white supremacy group. A second fictional suspect is described as an isolated 17-year-old white male student who was befriended by the older student and who mimics his new friend.

Craig Halverson of Griswold, national director of the Minuteman Patriots, an activist group that opposes illegal immigration, said today he is concerned that the exercise is intended to portray people who legally possess guns and who fight illegal immigration as extremists. Members of his organization, as well as members of the Tea Party Patriots and the 9/12 Project, are calling and emailing Iowa’s elected officials to voice their objections, he said.

Hey Mr. Halverson? Do the names Shawna Forde, J.T. Ready, or Jim Gilchrist ring any bells for you? All are white nationalists, and all are current or former members of your organization. Oh, and there’s that little issue of your group being on the SPLC “hate group” list also.

As for some of the reactions already coming in, here’s a couple quotes from the Freeper post on this story: (link goes to google search of the page - the actual link isn’t cached as of yet)
[Link: www.google.com…]

Foes of illegal immigration are up in arms over plans for a weekend disaster exercise in western Iowa with a fictitious scenario in which young white supremacists shoot dozens of people amid rising tensions involving racial minorities and illegal immigrants.

Brazilian plastic surgeon says operated on Gadhafi

SAO PAULO – It was well past midnight when the Brazilian surgeon says he was escorted deep inside a bunker in the Libyan capital.

His assignment: to shave years off Moammar Gadhafi’s appearance by removing fat from his belly and injecting it into his wrinkled face. The Libyan leader also got hair plugs.

“He told me that he had been in power for 25 years at that time, and that he did not want the young people of his nation to see him as an old man,” Dr. Liacyr Ribeiro recalled. “I recommended a facelift, but he refused.”

The secretive four-hour procedure in 1995 was done, at Gadhafi’s insistence, with local anesthesia because he wanted to remain alert. Midway through, the Libyan leader stopped to have a hamburger.

Gadhafi was worried a facelift would be too noticeable, so he opted for the less radical procedure, the plastic surgeon told The Associated Press.

“I warned Gadhafi that the effects of the operation I performed would last for about five years, that it had an expiration date after which the skin would sag and the wrinkles would reappear,” Ribeiro said.

“He said he would call me if he needed me to come back,” and about five years ago there was such a request, but Ribeiro had a family obligation. “They never called me again,” he said.

At the time of the surgery, Gadhafi was 53, but Ribeiro said he looked at least 10 years older. A photo taken at the time shows the smiling doctor posing next to the Libyan leader, who wore a white suit, floral shirt and had pronounced wrinkles crisscrossing his face and neck.

After the procedure, “he looked like a 45-year-old man,” the doctor said.

Ribeiro insists he is speaking out now only to provide insight into a man about whom little is known, and certainly not to boast.

Willie Nelson catches a break:

[Link: bigbendnow.com…]

SIERRA BLANCA – The Hudspeth County Attorney is ready to make a plea deal with the Red Headed Stranger.

“I’m gonna let him plead, pay a small fine and he’s gotta sing “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” with his guitar right there in the courtroom,” County Attorney Kit Bramblett said this week. “You bet your ass I ain’t gonna be mean to Willie Nelson.”

Nelson was arrested November 26 after a Border Patrol agent smelled pot wafting from Nelson’s tour bus at the Sierra Blanca checkpoint. A little more than six ounces was found on the bus. Shotgun Willie was arraigned and on the road again after paying a $2,500 bond.

Japan’s leader calls situation ‘grave’ at nuclear plant where dangerous breach suspected

TOKYO — A suspected breach in the core of a reactor at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant could mean more serious radioactive contamination, Japanese officials revealed Friday, as the prime minister called the country’s ongoing fight to stabalize the plant “very grave and serious.”

A somber Prime Minister Naoto Kan sounded a pessimistic note at a briefing hours after nuclear safety officials announced what could be a major setback in the urgent mission to stop the plant from leaking radiation, two weeks after a devastating earthquake and tsunami disabled it.

“The situation today at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant is still very grave and serious. We must remain vigilant,” Kan said. “We are not in a position where we can be optimistic. We must treat every development with the utmost care.”

The uncertain situation halted work at the nuclear complex, where dozens had been trying feverishly to stop the overheated plant from leaking dangerous radiation. The plant has leaked some low levels of radiation, but a breach could mean a much larger release of contaminants.

Suspicions of a possible breach were raised when two workers waded into water 10,000 times more radioactive than is typical and suffered skin burns, the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said.

IN willies case it’s a double edged sword. His bus gets pulled over because cops know his weed history.

The 6.24 ounces that was found when Willie was arrested is above the amount Bramblett can handle in his jurisdiction. Well, no problem.

“Between me and the sheriff, we threw out enough of it or smoked enough so that there’s only three ounces, which is within my jurisdiction,” Bramblett said.

Actually, he explained, once you take the dope out of its packaging, the weight drops and that’s how Willie landed in the county attorney’s case load. Usually, those small personal use cases come from people traveling across the country on the interstate – they’re on their way someplace. If it’s a misdemeanor amount, like Nelson’s, Bramblett commonly allows them to plead and pay a fine and court costs through the mail. When the singer rolled through, County Judge Becky Dean Walker issued a mandate to Bramblett: “She told me you don’t dare let Willie Nelson plead through the mail,” the attorney recounted.

Syria protests spread, arrests in capital

Protests spread in Syria on Friday from their southern epicentre of Daraa to Damascus and a town south of the capital, where authorities moved to arrest at least five demonstrators.

Hundreds of people marched from Omayyed mosque in the centre of Damascus’ Old City along Souk Al-Hamadiyeh street chanting: “Daraa is Syria” and “We will sacrifice ourselves for Syria.”

At least five people were taken away by police in plain clothes, according to an AFP correspondent.

Supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad chanted back: “God, Syria and Bashar, that’s all.”

In Daeel, south of Damascus and about 30 kilometres (18.5 miles) north of Daraa, 300 people marched preceded by motorcycles, shouting: “Daeel and Daraa will not let themselves be humiliated.”

Mourners gathered for the funeral of two people killed during clashes with security forces in Daraa, an agricultural city about 120 kilometres south of Damascus, where a security clampdown left 100 dead according to human rights groups.

“With our blood and souls, we sacrifice ourselves for you martyr, ” said one resident contacted by telephone.

The Red Cross, Hamas, and Gilad Shalit

CBN News is reporting that the Red Cross is continuing to shelter three Hamas officials suspected in the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit five years ago. It sounds like the terrorists have it pretty good. In addition to receiving visits from foreign dignitaries, Jimmy Carter has dropped by, and the Hamas members have been free to hold press conferences from their safe-house at the Red Cross’s East Jerusalem office. Legions of Hamas supporters reportedly congregate outside the office on Fridays to hold candlelight vigils, as well.

“Under international humanitarian law, East Jerusalem is considered occupied territory,” Red Cross spokesperson Cecilia Goin explained to CBN News. “So the Palestinians living in East Jerusalem are considered protected people.”

While the Red Cross has welcomed the Hamas officials with open arms (the three of them have reportedly set up a tent at the office), Red Cross medical personnel continue to be denied access to tend to Shalit while he’s in captivity, in violation of international law.

The Red Cross’s cushy treatment of these Hamas officials is bad enough on its own. But it also highlights the fact that the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations haven’t been nearly as forceful as they should be in demanding the release of Shalit. Nearly five years after his capture, it’s a travesty that he hasn’t even been able to receive medical attention, while three of his suspected kidnappers receive visits from former U.S. presidents and diplomats.

How’s life on the mountain these days?

Dangerous… we’ve had a dry winter along the front range. Up here, at 8000-9000 feet, we’ve seen maybe a total of 3-4 feet of snow all winter, downhill, much less. We’ve already had 20 wildfires in March, three of them major burners.

If we don’t have a wetter spring, the wildfire season is going to be downright dangerous and destructive.

March is usually the snowiest month of the year, but we’ve only had one major snow fall, about 6 inches (I’m talking about my area, further up hill it’s been fine).

Night temperatures still going down to the 20’s (f). Days vary between 40-60’s (f).

Correction : MIDTOWN.

Not necessarily… the drier conditions have been on the front range, as I mentioned above, west of the divide, there has been a good amount of snow and moisture. I’m not sure if it is more than normal or under normal, but it’s not a drought, not on the other side of the divide.

And the Platte, which helps supply water east and north or the divide, start much higher up, closer to the divide, so it too will not suffer as much for water as we have around the front range.

It’s a mixed bag, basically, west of the divide things are not too bad, east of the divide, there’s problems.

ONSLOW COUNTY — We’ve seen Camp Lejuene Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan and now they are joining the fight against Libya.

About 2,200 Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit will take part in support operations based aboard USS Kearsarge at sea. Those support operations have thus far included air strikes and one rescue operation. The overall mission is to help end the violence directed at the Libyan people.

The Pentagon is sending an additional 400 Marines to join the amphibious assault ship Kearsarge near North Africa in response to the unrest in Libya, Pentagon officials said Tuesday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates ordered the Kearsarge and the amphibious transport dock Ponce to move from the U.S. Central Command region into the Mediterranean Sea to provide the capability for evacuation or humanitarian aid.

“We are obviously looking at a lot of options and contingencies,” Gates said Tuesday at a Pentagon briefing.

President Barack Obama was filmed being confronted by a locked door when he tried to enter the Oval Office from a terrace at the White House as he returned early from a trip to Latin America.

With a nonchalant stroll and a whistle, the US president walked past another set of locked French doors before he was finally able to gain access to his seat of power.

White House staff members were reportedly not informed before his arrival on Wednesday evening that the president was returning to work.

You’re right. The US Drought Monitor is showing bad things for the Eastern side of CO, but the West looks okay for now…

But, other than the weather, personally, things are comfortable in my life. I’ve been at the supermarket almost a year now (March 31st), got my first 1000 hours, so now they give me benefits, on the job downside, the store hasn’t hired a new cashier since me, a year ago, and they keep giving the front end work force more duties, spreading them around doing other tasks besides cashiering, and bottom line, the customer is effected most.

So, it’s bittersweet, job is paying my part of the bills, but I get a little annoyed at the way retail is managed. Like a lot of “kids” I did a little retail when I first started working, but this is the first time it’s a “career.” I’ve actually had more time and experience this time to form an opinion, and my opinion, retail is a mixed bag. When I first started there, I wondered how so many employees could simply walk in, do their job and not give a shit about the company other than doing what they are required.

After a year there, I can see how the top down boot-in-face management style breeds their own problems, it’s a silly, unproductive circle, but it’s the model, what can I do?

Over all, a new and interesting part of my life. I usually find something instructive and profitable no matter what the situation.

P.S. I like the other employees (well, most of them)… good people, mostly hard workers.

Where were the families of those who were being laid to rest? And no one there was apparently related to those buried?

Lots of unanswered questions, but it all points to being nothing more than a propaganda effort by Khadafi loyalists hoping to sway intl opinion (after all, why have an imam speak in English to a crowd of Libyans?).

Weiner has been one of the most outspoken supporters of the HCR package, but Medicaid costs are passed directly on to NYC under NYS law. That’s hitting NYC area health care providers hard, so he’s looking for a way to achieve the results of HCR under a waiver exemption from the overall rules that provides the same kind of coverage.

GOPers point to the waivers as being a sign that HCR is not workable because millions of people (via thousands of businesses, and several states that have received such waivers) are no longer tied to the HCR rules.

Democrats counter that the waivers are a sign that the HCR is flexible to deal with unique situations facing different states and businesses.

The truth is somewhere in the middle - HCR is flexible, but it points out weaknesses in the law as it passed to deal with the situation on the ground in the states and localities (ie unintended consequences).

Missile upgrade stokes intifada fears

AMID the turmoil in the Middle East, one aspect has largely been ignored: the rising tensions on Israel’s border with Gaza.

Another war between Israel and Gaza is looming.

“It is only a question of time, I’m sorry to say, until we clash with Hamas again and we teach them once again the rules of engagement,” Israel’s Home Front Minister Matan Vilnai said this week.

“Our wisdom is to push it off as long as possible — I have no question it’s going to happen.”

After the first bomb in seven years at a bus station in Jerusalem, which killed a British tourist and injured 39 others, Israelis are wondering whether this is the beginning of a new intifada.

And, unnoticed through the Middle East maelstrom, another development is occurring: the upgrading of the rockets being fired from Gaza.

For several years the rockets have been Qassams, which are made in Gaza with scrap metal. They have caused civilian fatalities and wrought havoc in towns such as Sderot, but with a range of 15km they have not been able to reach larger towns such as Beersheba and Ashdod.

In recent days, however, more of the rockets have been Grads, which are professionally made, with a range of 45km.

The Grads are imported, smuggled into Gaza through tunnels.

They come mainly from China — as the ship of weapons intercepted last week showed — and Russia, via Iran.

They will probably go into Gaza some time soon but it’s just not practical to eliminate Hamas. The leadership will flee to Syria or Egypt. The mid level operatives will all be cowering in hospitals. Even after a crushing military defeat Hamas is still supported by the Palestinian people and equipped by Iran. The process will repeat itself until the Palestinians decide to live in peace.

re: #413 Killgore Trout

They will probably go into Gaza some time soon but it’s just not practical to eliminate Hamas. The leadership will flee to Syria or Egypt. The mid level operatives will all be cowering in hospitals. Even after a crushing military defeat Hamas is still supported by the Palestinian people and equipped by Iran. The process will repeat itself until the Palestinians decide to live in peace.

as for fleeing, I think the IDF can pretty much seal up Gaza if they want, can’t they?….as for Hamas, I think the IDF should disarm the entire Strip and let them rot from within….without weapons there would be nothing for them to do

It’s not going to happen any time soon but the Palestinians will eventually get tired of living in poverty and misery. re: #417 albusteve

Easy to make those kinds of pronouncements. Sealing Gaza is already achieved in large part - there’s a blockade by sea, and the security fence limits movement in and out of Gaza except via established checkpoints/junctions like Rafah, Erez, etc.

Smuggling tunnels are a big problem between Gaza and Sinai, and Israel could possibly reoccupy the Philadelphi corridor to deal with that - but that would mean going back into Gaza in a permanent fashion.

As far as disarming Gaza is concerned - that simply is unfeasible. Too many arms are already in the territory and Hamas wouldn’t give them up without a bloody mess - lots of civilian casualties particularly because Hamas stores those weapons caches in close quarters with civilians, including schools, govt buildings, hospitals, etc.

And the moment Israel would commit ground forces, the usual hue and cry of genocide/ethnic cleansing would be heard - even if most, if not all, of the casualties are Hamas thugs. (See Jenin, where they claimed Israel engaged in genocide and wiped the city off the map, but aerial recon showed only a few buildings where the terrorists were holed up were damaged and the numbers killed were limited mostly to the Israeli soldiers who sought to root out the terrorists - and the terrorists themselves).

Sorry, but they have seen their fellow nations prospering and flourishing for decades (in comparison to their lot). Their “fellow nations” have given them lip service of support but in reality use them as chattel against Israel. Their “fellow nations” NEED the Palis to be there so Israel can be blamed for the Palis lot in life

Comments that advocate violence etc. etc.

Now maybe you’re off the hook directly since you’re not advocating that any of us in this forum do that. But think about it. Some day, and it would be a grand day, we may get feelers from Dear Leader or whoever. All these monsters should have a free ride to a retirement in obscene luxury. The example of those who have gone before, and gone unharmed, will then be instructive and encouraging.

Just go already.

The ancient Chinese scholar of war wrote that an enemy should be provided a golden bridge across which to flee. That’s not always appropriate, now that war has evolved to the point that retreat has its logic and is not the same thing as panic and rout. But leaving office as dictator is final.

What we want is that the choice should be clear: go in peace to a retirement full of houris and daiquiris, or fight it out and take your chances ending up like Mussolini or Ceausescu. We don’t want justice. Our first choice isn’t a hanging, though it may come to that if they refuse the carrot.

We just want them gone.

More likely, it will be as Matan Vilnai was quoted as saying. Israel will put it off as long as possible and only then make a serious effort to pound Hamas. When that happens, the Israelis will be pilloried in the Western media for whatever they do. Remember, the last time this happened, Israel received no credit for the fact that, at risk to its own soldiers and military objectives, it essentially called a daily siesta to facilitate the transfer of humanitarian supplies to the Gaza Strip.

Kilgore: There are two problems I see with your analysis. First, it is premised upon the typical Western notion that economics will drive everything. The history of the region suggests otherwise. Second, the reality is that those who live in the PA controlled areas of Judea and Samaria, have an economy that, frankly, is growing at a faster rate than Israel itself or most of the West. Even in Gaza, markers such as infant mortality are far better than they are in most of the Arab world, largely as a result of institutions that were put in place during the decades of Israeli control. The Palestinians’ antagonism against Israel is not a result of economics, but a combination of nationalist, religious and cultural factors, and has persisted despite it being clear that peace and cooperation with Israel would furnish much greater economic growth and prosperity.

Afternoon, all.

I know economic news isn’t on the forefront these days, but nonetheless, here’s today’s Krugman:

[Link: www.nytimes.com…]

Sample:

It was not always thus. Two years ago, faced with soaring unemployment and large budget deficits — both the consequences of a severe financial crisis — most advanced-country leaders seemingly understood that the problems had to be tackled in sequence, with an immediate focus on creating jobs combined with a long-run strategy of deficit reduction.

Why not slash deficits immediately? Because tax increases and cuts in government spending would depress economies further, worsening unemployment. And cutting spending in a deeply depressed economy is largely self-defeating even in purely fiscal terms: any savings achieved at the front end are partly offset by lower revenue, as the economy shrinks.

So jobs now, deficits later was and is the right strategy. Unfortunately, it’s a strategy that has been abandoned in the face of phantom risks and delusional hopes. On one side, we’re constantly told that if we don’t slash spending immediately we’ll end up just like Greece, unable to borrow except at exorbitant interest rates. On the other, we’re told not to worry about the impact of spending cuts on jobs because fiscal austerity will actually create jobs by raising confidence.

How’s that story working out so far?

re: #477 garhighway

Speaking of economic news:

G.E. made $14.2 billion in profits in 2010, and not only did it pay zero taxes, it claimed a tax credit of $3.2 billion.

Its extraordinary success is based on an aggressive strategy that mixes fierce lobbying for tax breaks and innovative accounting that enables it to concentrate its profits offshore. G.E.’s giant tax department, led by a bow-tied former Treasury official named John Samuels, is often referred to as the world’s best tax law firm. Indeed, the company’s slogan “Imagination at Work” fits this department well. The team includes former officials not just from the Treasury, but also from the I.R.S. and virtually all the tax-writing committees in Congress.

While General Electric is one of the most skilled at reducing its tax burden, many other companies have become better at this as well. Although the top corporate tax rate in the United States is 35 percent, one of the highest in the world, companies have been increasingly using a maze of shelters, tax credits and subsidies to pay far less.

In a regulatory filing just a week before the Japanese disaster put a spotlight on the company’s nuclear reactor business, G.E. reported that its tax burden was 7.4 percent of its American profits, about a third of the average reported by other American multinationals. Even those figures are overstated, because they include taxes that will be paid only if the company brings its overseas profits back to the United States. With those profits still offshore, G.E. is effectively getting money back.

Such strategies, as well as changes in tax laws that encouraged some businesses and professionals to file as individuals, have pushed down the corporate share of the nation’s tax receipts — from 30 percent of all federal revenue in the mid-1950s to 6.6 percent in 2009.

Asking can get you relocated, shot, or mean your citizenship gets yanked.

What citizenship. The Palestinian refugess (real and fictional) are denied citizenship in the Arab countries that have kept the so-called refugee issue alive for 60+ years in order to have a ready supply of cannon fodder for the next attempt at exterminating the Jews.

Arabs can be Israelis. Can Jews be Palestinian?

(historical note: until 1948, all “Palestinians” were Jews.)

So you still doing the theater?

None… short version… about two years ago, met a very wonderful woman, moved to the mountains about 40 miles west of Denver… held on to the theatre job for about a year… left the theatre job Dec. 2009… March 2010… started a part time job up here in the mountains as a cashier at a Kroger store… still do a little programming work from home for Kaiser… but no full time job in programming. Once in a while, some little theatre or school license one of my plays… also pick up some cash designing jewelry… sort of taking this like semi-retired… schedule at store varies, from overnights to days to evenings… this week was off 4 days in a row… work tonight.

In short… getting on and happy enough.

Well if they do’ I hope it’s not too late. That’s all I’m sayin

I don’t disagree. But I am reminded of the answer I received when I asked an elderly cousin who lived in Haifa while Hizb’allah was raining rockets on that city if she was okay. Her response was that it has been that way for 60 years and will likely always be that way.

Israel will deal with it when it has to and, hopefully, has a well thought out plan for what it is going to do. It will do so knowing full well that it will only result in quieting the situation temporarily, but that it has to be done nevertheless.

Thank you. I found it odd that I would be chided for saying that, when I call a person from Britain a Brit.

If someone could educate me in a persuasive manner what the difference is,I’d be happy to listen.

I find it unfortunate that the whole process sounds like doing yard maintenance. You want a plan so that it gets done efficiently and as less frequent as can be managed. Then you go out and trim the hedges knowing that they will grow back and you will need to do it again.

If you’re going to use that line of reasoning, then why use the abbreviation at all? If the word “Palestinian” doesn’t fit, why does the abbreviation work?

Only if they have ruled the Arab- and Muslim-majority countries for the past three quarters of a century. Otherwise, no, I wasn’t speaking about the Republicans. Frankly, the tactic of creating or misdirecting one’s potential or actual constituency at the threat of an “other” in order to ascend or hold on to political power is not limited to modern political parties in the United States. It is a tried and true tactic that has been used for millenia throughout the inhabited portions of this planet. Unfortunately for the people who resurrected their sovereignty in Israel in the face of an invasion form their better armed neighbors, we have too often been identified as the “other” and still are by much of the world, including by too many on both the right and the left in the U.S.

Afghani. I think the difference is that ‘Afghanistan’ is the ‘land of the Afghanis’, with the name of the people being given to the area, whereas ‘Pakistan’ is an invented country name. It means ‘land of the pure’. There is no ethnic group called Paks or Pakis. So, ‘Afghanis’, but ‘Pakistanis’.

An Afghan, I’m told, is either a dog or a knitted blanket.

Is it completely consistent? No, but then, why do we say ‘Englishman’ or ‘Dutchman’, but ‘Italian’ and ‘German’?

I don’t like ‘Pali’ or ‘Jordyptian’, but part of the resistance to ‘Palestinian’ is that its use is a modern ethno-national creation that has been very successful in warping people’s understanding of the history of the region. My feeling is that there’s not much that can be done about that except educate people on the history, since there actually is, now, a group that can be identified as ‘Palestinians’, regardless of whether that designation would have made much sense to their grandparents.

The Israelis and their supporters find it equally unfortunate, but, until the other side of the conflct is willing to accept and internalize the Jews having a right to their state and not merely recognize that the Jews actually currently have a state — which merely implies the continuing hope of a different scenario at a later date — there is no hope for anything different. Because the Palestinians have not shown that they have even begun to internalize the former — witness the reaction of not only Hamas, but also of the so-called “moderate” Fatah to UNRWA’s proposal to insert a lesson on the Holocaust into the 8th grade curriculum — and, at best, have merely accepted the latter, the necessary ground work for peace simply does not exist.

That’s about it, at this point, though. Someone once commented that all Ariel Sharon knew how to do was cut the grass, and all Arafat knew how to do was grow the grass.

OTOH, yard maintenance is better than total war.

re: #494 iossarian

I agree with you. Demonizing the “other” is always bad, no matter who does it.

I am not clear if you are suggesting that Israelis demonize Palestinians in the way that the Palestinians demonize Jews. If you are, you have, with all due respect, been spending too much time reading AP, Reuters, AFP and the NY Times. The Palestinian Authority — I assume I don’t have to make this point with respect to Hamas, Jihad Islami and their ilk — even today continues to demonize Jews and idolize their killers through its media outlets, its educational materials and institutions, its state-controlled religious leaders and its cultural institutions. That kind of state-sanctioned demonization of Palestinians from the Israeli side simply does not exist. You don’t, for example, see Israel naming a town square in Sderot for Baruch Goldstein, or the Chief Rabbi of Israel giviing a sermon on a government-owned television station calling Palestinians apes and pigs. When the IDF accidentally killed four civilians the other day while returning fire at a Gazan mortar crew, Jews were not handing out sweets to celebrate the deaths. To be sure, there is some demonization of Palestinians on the far right, as there is at the extremes of any democratic society, but, to cite one example, the mainsttream right in Israel largely do not argue any more about whether there really is such a thing as a Palestinian. If there is an impression that demonization of Palestinians as the “other” is widespread on the Israeli side, that is only because the Western press trumpets every unfortunate instance of it in order to fit their meme of moral equivalence. It is like the “cycle of violence” meme that is trotted out every time Hamas fires ball-bearing-laden missiles at civilian targets and the IDF, in response, engages in a pin-point strike against Hamas militants. it is also why studies have shown that many people in the West have a completley warped idea of Israel’s actual size, both as an absolute matter and relative to the surrounding countries.

Re: Ariel Sharon. Many people do not realize, or forget (oftentimes conveniently), that it was Ariel Sharon who removed the Jews from Taba to finalize the return of Sinai to Egypt, or that it was Ariel Sharon who, in an effort to stop merely moving the grass, ordered and implemented the de-Judaization of and Israel’s pullout from the Gaza Strip.

re: #504 sliv_the_eli

I’m really not trying to make any kind of moral equivalence. The hate displayed towards Israel is clearly out of any proportion to anything going the other way.

That being said, there are people in this very thread essentially arguing that there is no such thing as a “Palestinian”, so I think you have to tread carefully on that argument.

Fair enough point. For myself, I try to keep it as objective as I can — despite my obvious views on the subject — so I can educate, inform and prompt an intelligent discourse, from which I, too, can learn.
