Bachmann’s Pick for Political Director: A Birther

Best qualified man for the job
Wingnuts • Views: 41,681

You can already see that Michele Bachmann’s presidential run will be an epic wingnut saga of far right dimmitude; her first campaign hire would reportedly be a Birther. Classic.

Earlier this week, reports came out that Bachmann was planning to set up an exploratory committee in June or earlier. CNN also reported yesterday that according to one source, if she runs, “Iowa Republican state Sen. Kent Sorenson will likely be hired to be Bachmann’s political director for the state — and that Bachmann aides hope to have a complete team together for Iowa by this weekend.”

Sorenson (R) introduced a bill this month that would require any presidential candidate to present a birth certificate for public inspection before getting on the Iowa ballot.

Sorenson, who has previously announced his support for a Bachmann candidacy, certainly has a fringe-curious track record to match Bachmann’s, even aside from the birtherism.

He pushed legislation to make gold and silver legal tender in the state, and sponsored a bill that would require random drug-testing for recipients of government benefits.

Sorenson also voted against a bill that makes it illegal to refuse a blood-alcohol content test when carrying a firearm, and for one that legalizes dove-hunting.

Tennessee Lawmakers Allow Guns In Bars

Handguns will soon be allowed in bars and restaurants in Tennessee under a new law passed by state legislators who voted to override the governor’s veto.

The legislation that takes effect July 14 retains an existing ban on consuming alcohol while carrying a handgun, and restaurant owners can still opt to ban weapons from their establishments.

Thirty-seven other states have similar laws.

The state Senate voted 21-9 on Thursday against Democratic Gov. Phil Bredesen’s veto, a day after the House also voted 69-27 to override.

They overrode critics, including Bredesen, who said it’s a bad idea to have guns and alcohol in close proximity.

SF 39 A bill for an act relating to informed consent to an abortion and providing a criminal penalty, and providing effective dates.
SF 40 A bill for an act relating to the definition and regulation of outpatient surgical facilities or ambulatory surgical centers and providing for fees.
SF 41 A bill for an act relating to protocol for medically induced abortions, and providing penalties.

Another one:

SF 347 A bill for an act designating silver and gold coin as legal tender in payment of specified debts.

Senate Dems vote down push for gay marriage ban

A motion by state Sen. Kent Sorenson (R-Indianola) to suspend the Senate’s rules to allow a vote on a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage was defeated early Thursday morning on a party-line vote.

Sorenson asked all 50 senators to call up Senate Joint Resolution 8, a bill that would amend the Iowa Constitution to specify that marriage between one man and one woman is the only legal union valid or recognized in the state. Senate President Jack Kibbie (D-Emmetsburg) said “no,” but agreed to allow a vote on whether to suspend the rules and override his objection.

Twenty-six Democrats voted “no” and 24 Republicans voted “yes.” The motion was defeated…

Man, the dull throbbing from watching the David Barton video had just stopped when I saw this post. Seriously, WTF is wrong with these people?

I mean, honestly; I’m just not understanding how these people’s synapses are firing. And when I point out how batshit this stuff is, the few conservatives I know either mount a No True Scotsman defense or accuse me of being a bigot. Hand to Xenu, I’ve actually had a conservative tell me I’m prejudiced against Republicans.

I’m not under illusion that the Democrats have all the answers. IMO, Obama has been Enabler-in-Chief to the GOP’s crazy binge. But when I think about all the friends and family that will vote GOP while ignoring this stuff is depressing.

Sorry, didn’t mean to derail the thread. I just find the current Republican thought process unfathomable.

Why would you think that? Because they’re trained to know better?

A U.S. Army medic pleaded guilty Tuesday to the shooting death of a fellow soldier in Iraq during a night of heavy drinking.

Spc. Chris Rolan, 23, initially was charged with premeditated murder in the Nov. 16, 2005, death of Pvt. Dylan Paytas, 20, while the two were serving with Fort Benning’s 3rd Infantry Brigade in Iraq. He pleaded guilty to unpremeditated murder and other charges under a deal with prosecutors.

The two soldiers had been arguing at Camp Warhorse in Baqubah, Iraq, when Rolan shot Paytas four times with his Army-issue 9mm pistol, according to witness testimony.

Drinking plus gun equals doubleplusungood.

Guns in restaurants/bars- the law:

Fourteen states expressly permit a concealed weapons permit holder to carry a gun into a restaurant that serves alcohol (Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Wyoming). However in none of these states can a concealed loaded weapon be brought into a bar. Five of those 14 states expressly preclude carrying a loaded weapon into areas of the restaurant primarily devoted to drinking (i.e. the bar) (Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi and Wyoming). Six other states prohibit carrying guns in establishments that derive less than 50% of their total annual food and beverage sales from prepared meals (Georgia, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota Texas and Kansas (30%). Washington prohibits guns in 21 and up establishments. Oklahoma and Michigan prohibit carrying guns if the primary purpose of the establishment is drinking.

22 other states (Alabama, California, Colorado Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, , Idaho, Iowa Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New York, Nevada, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia) have no express permission or express prohibition statutes related to carrying a gun where alcohol is served. However, these states take action under public nuisance laws when the state or city becomes aware that guns and/or shootings are occurring in bars. These states also restrict carrying in places where alcohol is served through the state permitting process.

Well… good.. neither do I, and I don’t think I ever implied I do. I don’t conceal/carry, have no need for it, but I know people (similar to the reasons you give above) who do conceal/carry, and these are not people prone to be walking into bars and sitting down with a concealed weapon for an evening of boozing.

I also have a hole in the side of my office wall, you know, reminiscence of those shotgun holes in old-time western forts. I follow Canadian politics from a distance, so I might be off a bit.

The west votes conservative, save for BC.

Ontario calls the shots, mostly.

Quebec sells out to the highest bidder, the threat being separation which no one in Quebec really wants.

The NDP pretend they won’t spend much money.

The Liberals pretend their leader isn’t more American than he is Canadian.

The Conservatives are still fighting the Cold War.

Some news guy named Lloyd something or other tries to make the Prince Edward Island election returns sound important. He reminds Canada Anne of Green Gables grew up there.

On election night they interview a guy from Newfoundland. No one understands a word he says. The Lloyd guy reminds everyone Gander took in a bunch of planes on 9/11. They interview the mayor of Gander. No one understands a word he says.

Lloyd really likes Nova Scotia and glosses over New Brunswick.

There it is, election night in Canada as seen from a distance.

Not necessarily. Other parliaments do fine enough. The problem in Canada right now is that historically there has mostly always been a majority situation and the parties and people in are used to and want that. Minority governance is a different animal and they seem to spend all their time fitzing and farting around trying to ‘strategize’ to get it back. Plus in general Harper tries to govern like he has a majority and we get buckets of shit that leads to things like happened today. Not that they care. Whatever can be gotten away with will happen.

If the opposition parties weren’t complete morons the situation would be different but they are currently just as useless.

Are you a Molson or Labatts person!

I’m neither. They’re both gross. I’m a micro-brew woman.

re: #165 Jadespring

It’s pathetic really.

I have absolutely no idea who I’m going to vote for this time out. Right now I’m in a I’m not going to bother voting at all mood. I expect that to last until the morning of election day. Then I will feel massive guilt and go vote for someone. Not that it matters much. Whoever the Cons run in my riding will win.

I will vote just so I can say I did. Sask is full of rednecks so the Cons will win with their eyes closed.

I’m fearing and anticipating a Con majority. Once they have the reins we’ll see how much they roll gains in civil rights back.

Their complete avoidance of anything to do with AGW and placing a creationist chiropractor in a position to control science money does not bode well for our research sector when they get complete control.

I’d forgotten about that guy. Ugh.

I long for the good old days of the Red Tories. Reformatories are a different sort.

I like how it’s usually all done in polite tones a manner. “Mr Speaker, the honourable member from XXX is blah blah, nice big words, blah blah. ”

Translation: Joe you suck crap and I hate you.

For our American friends…

Red Toryism derives largely from a British Tory and imperialist tradition that maintained the unequal division of wealth and political privilege among social classes can be justified, if members of the privileged class contribute to the common good. Red Tories supported traditional institutions like religion and the monarchy, and maintenance of the social order. Later, this would manifest itself as support for the welfare state. This belief in a common good, as expanded on in Colin Campbell and William Christian’s Political Parties and Ideologies in Canada, is at the root of Red Toryism.

Bachmann’s Pick for Political Director: A Birther

we are now in the midst of a great national experiment to find out just how gullible americans actually are

176 rwmofo  Fri, Mar 25, 2011 8:06:13pm

If we can just take a break from the trivial distractions and key in on the major issues, it’s palpably obvious that Michele Bachmann would mop the floor with the President in a debate on the issues that actually matter.

She’s fail a debate that had to stick to reality.

But you know that. You’re trolling. On a dead thread.

Look, if you’re going to play the roll of the troll, then at least try to be a bit more… viable in that part.

And these “trivial distractions” are a major platform of the GOP today.
Or have you missed that?
