Fox News Twitter Account Sends Posts Claiming Obama Assassination

‘Hacked,’ says Fox
Media • Views: 33,648

Fox News is claiming that their @foxnewspolitics Twitter account was hacked last night, when someone posted a series of tweets claiming that the President had been assassinated.

These messages were only deleted within the past hour — Fox News left them online all night long and most of the morning.

UPDATE at 7/4/11 11:27:04 am

Apparently the hackers who did this call themselves “Script Kiddies:” The Group That Hacked A Fox News Twitter Account.

Using the foxnewspolitics account, they also bragged about their hacking skillz before posting the fake assassination tweets, and changed the Fox News background image: Fox News Politics Twitter Account Hacked, Disturbing Tweets Appear.

(The @scriptkiddi3s Twitter account is now suspended.)

I have no idea what to think about this. If they were hacked, the hackers selected the perfect target.

Obama is Smarter than Bush. We have proof.
Michelle Bachman to teach history at Harvard
Job Stewart is running for president.

13 lawhawk  Mon, Jul 4, 2011 9:41:06am

They only deleted this this morning? Jeez. What a frakup.

They're claiming that they were hacked, and the USSS was notified.

It is possible that they kept it posted so that they can investigate it, but maybe they couldn't regain control over the account until they got in touch with Twitter (with it being the 4th).

Whoever did end up posting this craziness has some seriously bad jobu coming his way. Real sick stuff.

14 reine.de.tout  Mon, Jul 4, 2011 9:41:30am
On Monday morning, FoxNews.com first posted a brief statement saying that the reports were incorrect, and that it regretted “any distress the false Tweets may have created.

Distress?

That's so mild it's insulting. This caused more than "distress". The assassination of any US official is no joking matter.

We get lucky because they fire off the fireworks on a barge in the Gulf or in a river. Plus it has rained for 9 straight days.

If the password was changed (as an explanation for why it was left up all night) why did they suddenly regain control in the morning?

If I wanted to f*** with somebody and could change their password to anything I wanted I'd probably set it to Edison3Samuel1Vimes8 after the name of one of my friends, the Discworld Character they remind me of, interspaced with my birthday.

It's easy for me to remember but I somehow doubt one night's worth of random guessing would provide a solution to it....

Whatever you think of Obama and his presidency, he has two young daughters, and I'm sure their parents protect them as much as possible.

However, the girls have friends. Those friends have parents. Who may have seen the tweets and reacted in a way that caused their kids to be aware. Who then may have texted/called/e-mailed the Obama girls. Who would then have been terribly upset and traumatized by this sort of thing.

Sick.

I am not arguing. However, it doesn't look like it was more than a few hours. Starting it at midnight EST on Monday of a long weekend (earlier in PST where I think Twitter is located), probably was calculated to make it difficult to regain control.

I think "all night long and most of the morning" might make it sound worse than what really happened.

7-8 hours from early AM EST on a long weekend.. is not "all night and most of the morning", and in my mind very understandable.

It seems sloppy to me, especially since I'm guessing they must have seen a spike in viewers when the news started coming around. But the hackers chose very wisely--Sunday night, on a three-day weekend? And I can easily see the people left to mind the shop not quite knowing what to do, and not being able to get anyone on the phone.

Fine, your JPG says five hours ago. What time did you take the screenshot?

I didn't take the screenshot -- it's from the Times. I saw the tweets on my iPhone at about 8:45, made some coffee and went to the computer, and they were gone before I could get a screenshot.

I agree with everything except the sloppy part. In TV you don't see a "spike in viewers" in real time the way you might on a website. I don't think the tweets linked back to the FOX website. Even then, it would take the webmaster to see it, and I doubt there is one working 24 / 7.

It looks like it started early Monday (July 4th) and ended within 7-8 hours. If the hackers changed the email address and password (which would only make sense), then (at that time of the morning, and on a long weekend) it could very well take hours to regain control of the account.

The Script Kiddies are looking to join and build upon the efforts of Anonymous and the now-defunct LulzSec in the antisec movement. Corporations and government entities have been prime targets for so-called hacktivist groups looking to uncover and expose information they feel the public has a right to know.

WTF is the antisec movement? The Matrix fantasy equivalent of survivalist culture?

122 lawhawk  Mon, Jul 4, 2011 11:34:34am

re: #108 Fat Bastard Vegetarian

Boo frickin' hoo. Sweeney complains about the NJ budget, but decided to add hundreds of millions of dollars to a budget and didn't have the means to pay for it. Yes, Christie vetoed the millionaires tax, but Christie ended up spending $850 million more on education than NJ did last year. So, how does Sweeney spin that - well, it's less than the $1.1 billion he was proposing in spending, so Sweeney calls it a cut.

Sorry, but we play that game all too well - a spending increase is called a cut only because it's a cut in proposed spending that is still more than the prior year. And everyone gets something for election year.

This political technique was perfected (and perhaps invented) by former Boston Mayor Kevin White

He would have one of his cronies on the council propose a 6% increase
After months of posturing the council would agree on a 4% increase and Hizzonner would go on TV saying that he saved the taxpayers 2%!!

Man the morning light in Oahu is sweet. Quite different than the PM light in Kona.

Plus I have a meeting planned for tomorrow AM, with a new set of spiffy duds from Tommy Bahama.

Yep "horno" weather. Or "hotter than an oven out there." Kind of hits you like this big wall of heat. I'm sure you know it's typically hotter in most places then as reported by the weather channels or NOAA. Like when you get in your car and it's about 120F in there.

We must destroy security before security destroys us

No security is security

There are plenty of people/groups out there that do this kind of thing, the main thing about lulzsec is it kind of got people feeling competitive.

Combination of copycat script kiddies (its so easy!) and the more skilled hackers wanting their own share of attention.

You, suck too.

seriously tho', the problem is that it's easy.

I mean hacking something like apple isn't, but twitter hacks and DDoS attacks are.

Could be worse. You could be stuck outside in Death Valley or Gila Bend. ;)

So was Reagan, and see what it got him! *rimshot*

Of course they're criminals, but its easy to do and hard to get caught. Not a great combination for the rest of us.

Check out those low temps!

You'll need an AC'd astronaut suit to walk around there.

Driving to Vegas, through Death Valley, you are praying, praying that your car doesn't do something.
