in the past, ABQ sounds like a war zone this time of year...fireworks for sale on every corner...it's a very big deal and it goes on for days, every hood has it's own gig and put together it seems like the whole city is shooting off stuff...but the fire hazard is so extreme, there will be no such thing this year...it's eerily quiet...last night, some heathen tossed a cherry bomb over the wall here at Ft Willow, followed by a string of blackcats...I returned fire but the engagement was inconclusive

It's been joked that all tea tasted like boiled sticks. I was given a sample of some Lapgang Souchong black tea. Apparently the tea is dried or otherwise treated over wood fires - and the leaves smell *very* smoky. The brew itself doesn't taste that smoky though, just some light overtones. Not bad with just a bit of sugar in it.

Well. There was an amber alert here a couple of weeks ago. Ended up having about 4 police choppers searching in the wrong place for almost 4 hours. They found the baby abandoned in Salinas. That was pretty annoying but not the end of the world. Used to have the ghetto bird fly around a lot in Denver during the summer months mostly. Also saw 3 Blackhawks flying south on the valley a couple of days ago. Right now? No choppers except for the black helicopter hovering behind the treeline keeping an eye on me. /

Checking to see where the Salem Network machine is heading this week... and at Townhall I see they are pushing several articles today that at best could be called "creative fiction", though more accurately should be labeled as pig-headed propaganda.

One article is a rant at Obama predicting that a new administration in 2013 will have to clean up the WH, not unlike the Bush administration had to do - evidence cited is the notorious case of the missing "W" from a keyboard.

Another article is just a dog-whistle about the Dutch and their need for social protection from the Africans and Asians - yes, those continents are explicitly called out - the author did not say "African muslims" - just Africa:

Indeed, the sweet immigrants from Asia and Africa who, supposedly, simply wanted to expand the market for shawarma wraps in a fairer clime all of the sudden grew fangs when they got to Utrecht, became culturally defiant to Dutch distinctiveness and started killing the Netherlands’ national celebrities. Arnhem, we have a problem.

I expect this all to get worse, simply because of human nature. I've discussed it before - the never ending treadmill of needing increased amounts of stimulus a la drug addiction.

The Hate-Right in this country is determined to prove Mencken a prophet.

Green Lantern was... well I didn't hate it. I also didn't need to pony up that kind of dough to see it, though. Thor and X-Men both beat it by a mile.

Oh, and TF3 is worth seeing in 3D.

I had to endure Titanic in the theater with a friend of mine who begged me to go see it with her.

I could have told you how it ended before Kate Winslet was on screen the first time. And I still had to sit through another three hours before I could leave the theater. Worst. Movie. Ever. At least Avatar had hot aliens in it.

And Thor had Natalie Portman.

The presentation of the hottie in TF3 was so crass, and plastic, it made me guffaw. My wife was 'WTF?' at the first scene with the 'love interest.'

Super 8 was my fave of the last few movies.

I could have told you how it ended before Kate Winslet was on screen the first time. And I still had to sit through another three hours before I could leave the theater. Worst. Movie. Ever. I hated it then and still don't like it now. And Avatar didn't do anything to change my mind about James Cameron as a director and storyteller.

I didn't hate Titanic, but it really did not deserve Best Picture. LA Confidential got robbed.

Just came across this. Rather pathetic if you ask me. Might even deserve the Darwin award of the year:

NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law

ONONDAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a motorcyclist participating in a protest ride against helmet laws in upstate New York died after he flipped over the bike's handlebars and hit his head on the pavement.

The accident happened Saturday afternoon in the town of Onondaga, in central New York near Syracuse.

State troopers tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 55-year-old Philip A. Contos of Parish, N.Y., was driving a 1983 Harley Davidson with a group of bikers who were protesting helmet laws by not wearing helmets.

Troopers say Contos hit his brakes and the motorcycle fishtailed. The bike spun out of control, and Contos toppled over the handlebars. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Troopers say Contos would have likely survived if he had been wearing a helmet.

Genius.

I expect this all to get worse, simply because of human nature. I've discussed it before - the never ending treadmill of needing increased amounts of stimulus a la drug addiction.

The Hate-Right in this country is determined to prove Mencken a prophet.

Yick, that was a hateful thing to read. Wall to wall vitriol, even coating the facts he should have conveyed. As it is, the article illuminated nothing other than the fact that Doug Giles is an asshole bigot.

Yeah, the Victoria's Secret supermodel was really empty and vacant throughout the movie. I looked at one of my friends at the end and asked "Was she really wearing high heels throughout that whole thing?"

I used to wear one back in my bicycling days. All the time. Did you know that asphalt can literally scrape the side of your head off if you're doing about 50 plus mph? Not uncommon to go above 50 downhill. I've done close to 60. Important part is to protect the gray matter.

My friend as I grew up had a mom who wouldn't watch the movies with her - but she'd let my friend see anything she wanted, and then make her go to confession right after.

My mom always thought that scheme sort of defeated the real purpose of confession. So I never got to see anything.

Bicycle helmets, like horseback riding helmets are far more wearable, IMHO.

Like I said, I don't like motorcycle helmets, so I don't ride motorcycles. I really don't get the conflict. Is feeling the wind thru your hair really as important as the gray matter?

But, then again, I've met some guys who have been thru horrible accidents and survived, still go out without their helmets. You see, they are "never going to die." I've actually heard that coming from the mouth of a survivor of a nasty accident.

I had a friend who got into a head-on of sorts (at an angle) with a van while riding his motorcycle with his girlfriend. He was wearing a standard helmet with no chin/jaw protection and she was using his new full face helmet. He wound up having his jaw nearly destroyed losing most of his teeth in addition to going into a coma. She was released within a couple of days. Once I saw a biker get into a slow speed collision with a car in a parking lot. He pulled into the lot and ran into a car. I watched as the car proceeded to run over his head and he was wearing a full face helmet. He got up for a few seconds and then collapsed. Without that helmet he would have suffered worse injuries if not death.

Yeah. The whole anti-helmet thing is rather strange. Almost like talking to the wall with those guys. But if they don't wear a full face even if they get into a "stupid" accident they can wind up with rather serious injuries. Then you have the bird brains that ride with sandals or sneakers. Sheesh. And motorcycles are REALLY hard to see when you are driving. I can't figure out why, but sometimes I don't notice I'm on the rode with one until I almost on them. I wish they had neon tail-lights.

With the holiday there have been some really dumb riders on the road. Yesterday there were two couples (boy/girl on one bike), no helmet, no leathers, no boots. They were trying to ride side-by-side in the lane. The one closest to me was nearly on the yellow line--On the Interstate!

I take that back, there may have been a helmet or two. Lots of hair and clothing streaming in the wind. Those little cotton sun-dresses really don't protect arms and legs from concrete . . .

Oh yeah. Typically it's those "ninja" bikers too. They even ride Japanese bikes. The reason you can't see them is because they're driving at a high rate of speed and frequently changing lanes. We all drive looking for vehicles that are driving at around the same speed as we are driving and staying reasonably in our lanes. Colorado doesn't allow bikers to ride the line like they do in California. It's rather stupid to allow them to do that IMO. Anyway, most of us aren't driving with our heads on a swivel as if though we're in an F1 race.

Oh. And those bumper stickers that read "hit a biker go to jail" are stupid as hell. More like "hit a biker" and blame whichever dolt caused the accident. But that's the weird part. Bikers act as if though they're either a protected species and above the law. Oddly enough bicyclists have a similar attitude.

AHHH! The weird bike lanes they have in Colorado. I forget where, they have these British style round-a-bouts and the bikers and the cars get all fucked-up. Especially if they bikers are in a group--with their cool outfits and all.

Something like "I think the Whacko Christian's are jealous and fearful that Muslims might beat them to theocracy in this country" so they are pushing harder and screaming louder about gay marriage, abortion etc . . . .

Seriously, because JK Rowling didn't make the books even longer by writing about how Harry and his friends attended Church services every Sunday and how they had to sit around memorizing Bible Verses and go about the little town asking people if they've been "saved." Whatever.

They had a Christmas Tree and celebrated Christmas, I think it is pretty clear that most of Hogwarts students were Christian, like any other boarding school in England.

Which makes them Pagan, technically, not Christian. And, as the detractors would also point out, it's presented more along the lines of a Solstice celebration.

Without trying to sound too much like a fundamentalists, I do agree with them that Rowling's HP works are rather dogmatically non-Christian.

Here's the CO.

Christopher J. Ferguson (CAPTAIN, USN, RET.)
NASA ASTRONAUT

Flight Experience:

EXPERIENCE: Ferguson was commissioned from the Navy ROTC program at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his Navy Wings in 1986 and was ordered to the F-14 Tomcat training squadron in Virginia Beach, VA. After a brief period of instruction, he joined the “Red Rippers” of VF-11, deploying to the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian oceans onboard the USS Forrestal (CV-59). While with VF-11, he also attended the Navy Fighter Weapon School (TOPGUN). He was selected for the Naval Postgraduate/Test Pilot School program in 1989. Through June 1994, he served as the F-14D weapon separation project officer, becoming the first pilot to release several types of air-to-ground weapons from the Tomcat. He joined the “Checkmates” of VF-211 in 1995, completing a deployment to the Western Pacific/Persian Gulf in defense of the Iraqi no-fly zone onboard the USS Nimitz (CVN-68). He briefly served as the logistics officer for the Atlantic Fleet prior to his selection to the space program.

Mongo like old school.

Pilot

Douglas G. Hurley (COLONEL, USMC)
NASA Astronaut

EXPERIENCE: Hurley received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps from the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1988. After graduation, he attended The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, Virginia, and later the Infantry Officers Course. Following Aviation Indoctrination in Pensacola, Florida, he entered flight training in Texas in 1989 and was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1991. He then reported to Marine Fighter/Attack Training Squadron 101 at Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California, for initial F/A-18 training. Upon completion of training, he was assigned to Marine All Weather Fighter/Attack Squadron 225 where he made three overseas deployments to the Western Pacific. While assigned to VMFA (AW)-225, he attended the United States Marine Aviation Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI), the Marine Division Tactics Course (MDTC), and the Aviation Safety Officers Course at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterrey, California. Over his four and a half years with the “Vikings,” he served as the Aviation Safety Officer and the Pilot Training Officer. Hurley was then selected to attend the United States Naval Test Pilot School at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Maryland, and began the course in January of 1997. After graduation in December 1997, he was assigned to the Naval Strike Aircraft Test Squadron (VX-23) as an F/A-18 Project Officer and Test Pilot. At “Strike,” he participated in a variety of flight testing including flying qualities, ordnance separation, and systems testing and became the first ever Marine pilot to fly the F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet. He was serving as the Operations Officer when selected for the astronaut program.

Japanese retirees volunteer to work in stricken nuclear plant

They ask, why risk the health of the younger generation to perform such work in a perilous radioactive environment? Cells reproduce more slowly in the bodies of older people, they reason, so any cancer caused by absorbed radioactivity would take much longer to form.

Yamada says he'll be dead from something else long before any radiation-caused cancer can kill him.

"Young workers who may reproduce a younger generation and are themselves more susceptible to the effects of radiation should not be engaged in such work," said the retired environmental engineer and consultant. "This job is a call for senior citizens like me."

According to certain politicians and media figures, all the evil in the world can be attributed to a nefarious gang of Zionist bankers, New World Order plotters, and Secular-Humanist conspirators. I want to know just two things about this secret cabal: Are they hiring and, if so, how do I apply?

The Illuminati will accept your application only after you take Percy Shelley's heart to a cenote near Chichen Itza, thrown into the lightless depths while intoning prayers from a pre-Columbian prophetic codex depicting The Big Bopper sacrificing Buddy Holly to the corn god Xipe Totec. They were a bit vague about what happens next, but apparently if you answer all the riddles Howard Hughes asks correctly they have a position in HR they want filled. You are, however, required to sign a standard non-disclosure agreement and a standard pact with Dantalion, 71st of Solomon's spirits, Great and Mighty Marquis of Hell, commander of 36 legions, who knoweth the Thoughts of all Men and Women and can change them at his Will.

Dropkick Murphys

"Last Letter Home," salutes American serviceman and Dropkick Murphys fan Sgt. Andrew Farrar, who died on his 31st birthday January 28th, 2005. Shortly before his death in a letter he sent home, Farrar requested the Dropkick Murphys' version of "Fields of Athenry" be played at his funeral should anything happen to him while he was in Iraq. In addition to blending excerpts from that very letter into "Last Letter Home," the band was present at Farrar's funeral and played "The Fields Of Athenry" on the pipes as the casket entered the church.

I read that yesterday. An amazing career. Here's something that really stood out:

(Longer AP version)
[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

Mellinger, 58, says his stories of being in the Army during the tumultuous 1970s as the Army struggled with issues of drugs, race and the role of women are so foreign to young troops that they look at him like he's a dinosaur when he shares them.
...
A recruiting poster hanging today on Mellinger's office door at Fort Belvoir, where he's the command sergeant major for the Army Material Command, that encourages female troops to try out for female engagement teams that work in war zones with Special Forces troops shows just how much things have changed since Mellinger was drafted.

Until 1978, female troops were in the Women's Army Corps separate from the regular Army. Mellinger said he recalls when most female troops weren't allowed to carry weapons and were taken out of the field at night to sleep in a separate barracks away from the men.

"There were some stymied leaders. What do we do with all these females?" he said. "A lot of those things together caused a lot of turmoil, caused a lot of difficulty and problems and a huge leadership challenge because the military was being torn apart like the country was."

Either full season preceded by one exhibition game or two pre-season games eliminating the 1st "regular"season game

I hope they don't go to an 18 game regular schedule, but I think thats whats coming (but not this year,,, they'll table it for this season and agree on that during the season)

Easy day today, then off to the Giants/Padres game...leave by the sixth or seventh inning to beat traffic, and the 30 minute drive home will take over an hour if yesterday's traffic along Highway 1 was any indication.

Drill, baby, drill...not even the fact that this will force a few Republican representatives to pretend to care about the environment in front of their constituents makes this any better...

He shouldn't have been. This time I have to disagree with Charles. Mikey got pissed because he was constantly getting downdinged and disrespected. Anyone would have done the same. I know you weren't part of the hostility, ICE, but once a person feels pushed like Mikey did they tend to lash out. Perhaps a timeout is appropriate, but in my opinion a banning is not warranted. That said, it is Charles' blog, and his decision. But I don't agree with it.

That's why I suggest a timeout, instead. And then back off the negative reviews. Honest engagement with the other party is always difficult in ideological situations and its never really encouraged in modern politics. Hence the feels that the other side is out to get you are always going to very strong.

Not to change the subject from post-flounce analysis, but seriously...schools are no longer teaching cursive? Two or three generations from now, the President will have a green crayon for making a mark to sign a bill, and a red crayon for making a mark to veto one.

[Link: www.ktla.com...]

INDIANAPOLIS—
Starting this fall, schools in Indiana won't have to teach kids how to write in cursive.

Until now, kids started learning cursive handwriting in 2nd grade; but state education officials say computers and web books have made cursive a relic of the past; so it won't be required any more.

Local school districts can still teach it if they want; but the state says it's more important to teach kids good keyboard skills.

Keyboard skills? Really? What the fuck is there to teach? "Oh, look...Tommy typed a capital M...let's print it out and tape it to the refrigerator"

My handwriting sucks, but only because I picked up bad habits later in my education. Cursive is where persona takes form on paper. It is as much a person as the sound of their voice.

Spell check - no! Spell check will replace spelling, because it's really important that kids have good spell check skills. And google skills are important too because they reduce the time teachers need to waste teaching math.

Type "what is the square root of 452" into google and you should get something like "square root(452) = 21.2602916" beneath the search box without even hitting the "I'm feeling lucky" button.

My signature is very "John Hancock"ish. Huge. Big swirling letters, lines four inches long, very egocentric. And it takes about 25 seconds to write.

Because I became a notary (the first day I had to notarize 180 documents) I quickly adopted a MDish signature. Can scrawl it in a second or so.

It was the only place in my life I used cursive handwriting.

Like teaching home candle-making, IMO.

Be honest. Tell them you're happy to talk but you just interviewed, and if one of the other offers is your first choice, be honest about that. Best thing to do is say that you don't want to play the employers off of each other, but you do want to see what your options are.

Another reason not to visit Arizona (and commit crime while there)...

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio took the temperature inside one of the tents at Tent City Saturday afternoon.

The tents can sometimes mimic ovens or hot cars. The gauge in Arpaio's hand indicated 145 degrees, nearly 30 degrees hotter than the day's high.

The sheriff said it was exceptionally hot at the outdoor jail but said there was nothing he could do about it.

"What am I going to do, take them out of jail because it's too hot?" he said. "Our men and women are working out here in this heat, too. Does anyone feel sorry for them?"

I once tried to bribe my parents with goodies I bought at a fair shortly after getting a failing warning.

"Mom, this is for you. Dad, this is for you. Oh, yeah -- I'm also failing English."

I had completely separated the two events; I was so dumb back then I didn't have even the slightest awareness that giving my folks gifts before hitting them with bad news would be seen as trying to butter them up.

I was woefully unprepared for the shitstorm that followed.

Excuse me but aren't the Left Wing sites restricting themselves to only the "true believers" just as guilty of confirmation bias as the right wing one are? In this case I got involved in a conversation about polygamous and polyandrous relationships. If you know my posting style you will probably understand how I got into trouble, still it seems a bit unfair to get hammered for a sarcastic/jesting post that was labeled as such.

Oh well, this web based intertubes thing that was supposed to bring us all closer together seems to me to be only dividing people more and more into entrenched camps where they only hear from the people that agree with them 100%.

I only took basic college math. And I did not do well at that.

My daughter on the other hand . . .
She's a self-starter, I never had to do anything to get her to do her homework, she always did it, and she always did well in school.

I remember when she went into the 7th grade, I was a bit pissed off that the school did not place her in the advanced class, esp. with math & science, when I knew her standardized test scores placed her in 98th or 99th percentile in math & science, every damned year. (But for some reason, she still cannot spell!).

I never called the school about it because I figured they had any number of parents calling all the time about their genius kids, so I wasn't going to add to the number.

As she finally admitted to me years later - the school DID want to place her in the advanced classes. They sent a sealed letter home with her about it. She was curious about that letter, and opened it and read it. Then she decided she didn't want to be in that class - so she tossed the letter and I never saw it. LOL. She should have come clean much earlier than she did, she had to listen to me bitch and moan about the school for years.
