Where’d All The Income Growth Go? To The 1 percent!

CBO found that, between 1979 and 2007, after-tax income grew by 275 percent for the top 1 percent of households. That dwarfs income growth for middle and lower income households over the same time frame — nearly three decades during which the rising tide vaulted yachts and cruise ships, but barely nudged house and tugboats.

Specifically:

CBO finds that, between 1979 and 2007, income grew by:

* 275 percent for the top 1 percent of households,
* 65 percent for the next 19 percent,
* Just under 40 percent for the next 60 percent, and
* 18 percent for the bottom 20 percent.

First of all, wealth doesn't correlate strongly with intelligence. If you think so, please provide some support for that claim.

Second of all, this is a new thing. Either viewed in absolute terms, or in terms of velocity, the situation has changed radically over the last 20 years.

And again-- you're kind of missing the point. The problem is that the divide between the wealthy and the rest is growing. Middle and working class incomes, in real terms, are stagnating. That is bad for everyone. It's bad for capitalism. It's bad for the wealth of the nation.

Heh. Oh boy.

This means the average income difference between a person with an IQ score in the normal range (100) and someone in the top 2 percent of society (130) is currently between $6,000 and $18,500 a year.

Compare that rate of difference with the actual change in income for the various claves, Ace. Does it add up?

Do you think all of this can be explained because the top 2% income earners earn on average between $6,000 and $18,500 a year more than the norm? Is that what actually occurs?

We're not really talking about average income, though. we're talking about the disparity between the average and the extreme outlier.

Ace, do you realize that for your argument to work, the top 1% wouldn't just have to be smart-- they'd have to be getting smarter-- and at a geometric rate? The rate of change is increasing. Do you think they're becoming more and more intelligent?

Do you get that you cannot explain the difference in income between the top 2% and the average income in terms of it being between $6,000 and $18,500 greater? I assume you do get that. So that top 2% of intelligent people and that top 2% of income earners are not the same population, right?

I'm sorry, Ace, but really, for your claim to work, the high income earners would have to be getting more intelligent by the year. In significant amounts. Things are changing. What you're talking about doesn't explain that rate of change. I don't know why you think it does.

Well, on that graph it's flatter than others. But even then-- the study that you're citing shows a small difference in the income between people with average and top 2% intelligence. It's a very, very modest difference. It is very, very obviously insufficient to explain the increasing wealth disparity between the middle class and the ultrawealthy.

Do you get that? You cannot cite a study saying that a 130 IQ correlates to an advantage of $6,000 to $18,500 a year in income and say it explains the graph you just posted. The numbers don't add up, do they? the difference in income of the top 2% and the average income isn't $6,000 to $18,500, is it?

Very true. No one is saying that intelligence is a guarantor of income. Hard work, luck, circumstances, etc. all play a part. However, poorly educated folks who don't have a good work ethic and aren't terribly intelligent probably have a more difficult time figuring out how to increase their income beyond the rate of inflation. Is that such a controversial statement?

But if your argument is that smarts is the key to higher wages, then wouldn't the GOP's efforts to hamper public education, with the ultimate goal of eliminating it altogether, be seen as one geared towards denying folks the tools to become part of the 1%?

Case in point: Meg Whitman.

Darren Wesley Huff, of Dallas, Ga. , waits in his truck for a verdict to be returned in his federal trial on two firearms charges, including a charge of causing a civil disturbance, Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 in Knoxville, Tenn. Huff has described himself as a member of the Georgia militia and Oath Keepers, a part of the so-called "birther" movement that disputes President Barack Obama's U.S. citizenship. Before his arrest, he told the FBI and authorities in Tennessee that he was going to Madisonville to support Walter Fitzpatrick in trying to arrest local officials.

Lucky for me that i didn't say such a thing. I said they were smart, which I infer because (a) duh and (b) it's generally understood that high-income earners are likely to be smart.

Which is not the same thing as saying that smart people are likely to be high-income. But I apologize if i was unclear on that point.

What you actually said, in response to the news that the top 1% of income earners had increased their share of income by a massive amount:

Not a real shocka, right? Wealth is strongly correlated with intelligence. Most people who are smart enough to get rich are probably smart enough to get richer.

You're saying, there, that it's not shocking that the top 1% of people increase their share of the national income by a much higher proportion, because income is strongly correlated with intelligence. But you don't actually mean that income strongly correlates with intelligence-- all you actually cited was that intelligence has a correlation with a small degree of relative increase in income. It does not, at all, explain that graph that you were responding to.

Ahhh...IQ is utterly flawed as a measure, even of "intelligence" except as the broadest measure.

If someone is well below 100, yes they are likely not too swift. If someone is over 120, yes they are probably clever.

But in the end, the numbers are meaningless except as a raw and flawed guide.

After all, Feynman only ever got a 124. So how many twits do you know who have above that, and how many of those are anywhere close to the same league as Feynman, let alone smarter?

Absolutely! I agree completely. But even with what the IQ is supposed to measure, mathematical, scientific, pattern recognition and logical reasoning skills, it just doesn't do the job that many think it does.

Again, 124 is above average, but not that high. Yet, Feynman was arguably one of the smartest people to have ever lived.

124 is medium high, IMHO. It's a good number for functionality in the world. If that even means anything.

IQ is just a general indicator of the ability to do well in an IQ test.

Which is how I feel about all tests.

Really, like in sports, all that matters is that you hit-the-home run on game day.

I walked in off the street. My recruiter asked me if I had taken the test before. I hadn't but he was taking another guy across town to take it that same day. He asked if I wanted to study a few weeks, but I said no, I could always take it again later, lets see how I did. They got me into the test about 1 minute before it started. How Revolutionary Tools Cracked a 1700s Code

Discovered in an academic archive in the former East Germany, the elaborately bound volume of gold and green brocade paper holds 75,000 characters, a perplexing mix of mysterious symbols and Roman letters. The name comes from one of only two non-coded inscriptions in the document.

Kevin Knight, a computer scientist at the Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California, collaborated with Beata Megyesi and Christiane Schaefer of Uppsala University in Sweden to decipher the first 16 pages. They turn out to be a detailed description of a ritual from a secret society that apparently had a fascination with eye surgery and ophthalmology.

It is an unfortunate fact that every man who seeks to disseminate knowledge must contend not only against ignorance itself, but against false instruction as well. No sooner do we deem ourselves free from a particularly gross superstition, than we are confronted by some enemy to learning who would set aside all the intellectual progress of years, and plunge us back into the darkness of mediaeval disbelief.

And just to prove that he's on a role, PaleoPat posted another essay today lamenting the demise of America and faulting the usual suspects. And part of his article is praising review of his new book, a review written by one Jack Hunter, a secessionist and supporter of the Confederacy.

The Townhall commenters don't even blink, and there are comments over there that are probably paralleled at VDARE (which is trumpeting the same article.)

re: #94 Aceofwhat?

Okay. So if WS managers pushed money around and also occasionally took a dump in a box and sold it, we'd be ok with it? I think that your viewpoint is common, but I also find it oddly specific. Like saying "hey, i really can't stand this one particular group of overpaid folks, but these other wastes of space are cool".

Dropping a public dookey doesn't seem to be any better justification for high income than moving money around. So i'm thinking about occupying Hollywood. Wonder if I'll get fired...

I think it's insane what people get paid in Hollywood, but to the best of my knowledge, I have never been asked to make up the difference when one of their big summer blockbusters flops.

re: #288 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

Government told the cops to clear them out, so the cops cleared them out.

'Government' in this case being the office of Jean Quan, Mayor.

Early on, the scene outside City Hall was largely peaceful, but it was a different story a few blocks west on Washington Street. Officers in riot gear hemmed in protesters around 6 p.m. and attempted to arrest one person, as about 50 more surrounded them shouting, "Let him go, let him go."

Protesters threw turquoise and red paint at the riot police officers' faces and helmets. Some led the crowd in chanting, "This is why we call you pigs."

Others pleaded with the agitators to be peaceful and return to the march, yet some protesters tried to fight with police and were clubbed and kicked in return.
Some displeased

Some protesters who avoided conflict and wanted to show their support for the Occupy Wall Street movement were displeased by the violent turns.

"They didn't have to force police into that situation," said Helen Walker, 46, a nurse from Albany. "It was totally provoked, and if I could have, I would have stopped those idiots from throwing paint."

At about 6:20 p.m. protesters tried to enter Frank Ogawa Plaza, but were met by a line of police in riot gear who quickly put on gas masks and ordered the crowd to disperse. After activists came face-to-face with police, they sat down in the intersection before moving on and trying to enter the plaza from another side street.

"Keep moving and not getting arrested shows pluckiness and originality and a great American spirit," said Isaac Simons, an Oakland resident marching with the group.

At 7:30 p.m., police were using a loudspeaker to warn people that "chemical agents" would be used against those who refused to disperse. Fifteen minutes later, they made good on their threat.

299 Gretchen G.Tiger  Tue, Oct 25, 2011 8:38:31pm

In 1968, The Vietnam War was going on and there was the Draft. Protesters, IMHO, were seriously prone to violence, in part, because they were fighting for their lives or the lives of someone they loved.

Today, the troops are being recalled, and we have an volunteer military.

I don't see the same impetus for violence. So, I don't think have the knee-jerk paranoia reaction that a lot of people seem to have.

Possibly both. People come in from out of town for this kind of thing, and it's usually the out-of-towners who are eager to clash with the cops.

I gotta say: This looks some effing stupid provocation:

They'd already been camping there for two weeks.

That was probably the cops' mistake from the beginning. San Francisco made a deal with the protesters right at the beginning. No tents, no fires.

Oakland waited, and then tried to break up something that had already become entrenched. Bad idea. And OPD is in transition anyway. Not that I had a lot of faith in Batts, but this was a bad situation for a new interim chief to come into.

Quan is a progressive, she doesn't want to be the bad guy here, but she also doesn't have a strong enough relationship with the cops to hammer out a good plan, and I'm not sure she was realistic about how this would go.

A lot of factors here.

The demands formed part of a 70% rise in takedown requests from the US government or police, and were revealed as part of an effort to highlight online censorship around the world.

Figures revealed for the first time show that the US demanded private information about more than 11,000 Google users between January and June this year, almost equal to the number of requests made by 25 other developed countries, including the UK and Russia.

All the more reason you'd think Republicans would be big on legalizing marijuana. They get a grand new cash crop that the cigarette lobby can plunder, the "sin" taxes that can be levied will help fund future wars, and they'd be able to fire a lot of folks taking part in the "War on Drugs."

No, but that was because the Prohibition era lasted long enough to bring some seriously shrewd leaders into power in the organized crime rings of New York and Chicago. Men like Jake Guzick, Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti, Charles "Lucky" Luciano, and Tommy Luccasy were smart enough to use their bootlegging profits to diversify. Luccasy in particular was able to use the cash he had horded to go into loan-sharking, and from there gain a big piece of New York's garment business. Cloths makers had to turn to him during the Depression, because the mafia was often the only organization that had money to loan.

Well, why post it? That case has already been adjudicated. I realize the fact that the cop was not found guilty of murder (he was found guilty of manslaughter) angered many in Oakland, but the jury reached the right verdict, IMO.

Couple of years ago? Anyway. My point there is that Oakland's more radical population has been rather testy since that event. So we have to think context here when we see some of those signs. Some of course are just wannabe radicals so being young they'll just write or say anything.

I understand that, but I do not believe in giving them slack over that. The fact that someone is that keyed up is all the more reason to drop the hammer. It's unlikely such a person can be talked down, so I think it best to simply beat them down instead. The authority of the police must be maintained, period.

re: #374 Dark_Falcon

Luciano negotiated for himself, his lieutenants and associates to get full pardons for everything they'd done prior to 1942 and for the next several years thereafter in return for their Sicilian counterparts assisting the OSS in Italy... landing spies, getting them papers and transportation and cover stories, they helped us sabotage Mussolini's troops and their equipment, etc.

To this day, I can't understand how Mehserles could have made such an error, and I can't bring myself to believe he did it deliberately. I have no idea what the hell happened, and I don't envy the jury having to sort it out, especially knowing what a tinderbox the Bay Area had become over it.

It's a lot bigger and more complicated than Oscar Grant. And ragged and untidy around the corners.

Less than four months after Grant, Lovelle Mixon shot four Oakland PD officers, and just last week the East Bay Express ran a live music review that mentioned a performer giving him a 'shout-out'.

Some of the folks who think that's cool are out there as well.

I've lived and worked in the Bay Area for years. I was working in Richmond when Oscar Grant was shot, and through all the craziness that followed. I was around for the Mixon shootings as well. I've waited for the bus with grown women wearing "Snitches Get Stitches" t-shirts, and I've seen solemn kids carry Grant's picture in the MLK Day Parade in SF.

And I've taught kids from every corner of the Bay Area.

I see where the distrust of the police departments comes from--and I also see how it makes people even more vulnerable to crime and predation, more willing to accept living in fear.

I am not inclined to let Occupy Oakland off the hook, or OPD either, or Jean Quan. This is where I live.

Indeed. It was called Operation Underworld. The Mafia especially hated Mussolini, whose crackdown had severely damaged the Mafia is Sicily.

As an aside, that same crackdown caused Johnny Torrio to return to the US in 1928. Given that it was Torrio (with assistance by Nucky Thompson, though it will be years before Broadwalk Empire tells this story) who organized the 1929 conference in Atlantic City that proved key to the growth of organized crime in the US, Mussolini crackdown ended up aiding the the Mafia in lasting ways. Isn't that ironic, don't you think?

As long as there's a black market there will always be these narco-terrorists. You arrest 1 or 100 there will be others waiting in line to take up the slack where others left off. These people make millions if not billions from drug trading. So much so they're even willing to expand their operations into other countries and especially in California and marijuana crops. Even down to the dealers who can buy a pound or two every week and make a good living every year.

The suspect, who really does have a forked tongue, also sports sharpened teeth and “666” inked onto his forehead. In his booking photo, Veiovis had what appeared to be a pair of horns or tusks protruding from his nostrils.

It's frustrating. If it was legal, and fuck this medical marijuana BS too while we're at it, then there would be transparency and legal activity instead. Including taxation. Marijuana is not that harmful at all as we all know. Especially when you compare it to hard liquor. People still need to take precautions with it but it should be completely legal for recreational use. We can worry about the other drugs later. Legalizing pot would kill a huge swath of the black market and the associated criminal element. People are actually dying because it is illegal now. And we're not talking just a dozen people here and there. We're talking thousands if you consider the Mexican drug wars.

Federal prosecutors are expected to file criminal charges on Wednesday against Rajat K. Gupta, the most prominent business executive ensnared in an aggressive insider trading investigation, according to people briefed on the case.

The case against Mr. Gupta, 62, who is expected to surrender to F.B.I. agents on Wednesday, would extend the reach of the government’s inquiry into America’s most prestigious corporate boardrooms. Most of the defendants charged with insider trading over the last two years have plied their trade exclusively on Wall Street.

The charges would also mean a stunning fall from grace of a trusted adviser to political leaders and chief executives of the world’s most celebrated companies.

A former director of Goldman Sachs and Procter & Gamble and the longtime head of McKinsey & Company, the elite consulting firm, Mr. Gupta has been under investigation over whether he leaked corporate secrets to Raj Rajaratnam, the hedge fund manager who was sentenced this month to 11 years in prison for trading on illegal stock tips...

Economic development would help better than more batons and tear gas (or perhaps in conjunction with COMPSTAT). A lot of kids go into gangs because they idolize the gangstas and hoes for being more successful in life than the legit entrepreneur.

Also, Oakland vibe:

California doesn't have much chance of development right now. The tax burden is too high and regulation crippling. To get the growth you want, taxes have to be lowered, regulations reformed, and the government unions need to have their power cut back.

I don't know about all that, but I have a friend that works heavy equipment. Trenching. When the housing bubble burst, he had to lateral shift into ag trenching.

Lately, he has seen a decent uptick in in trenching foundations. Not so much a mini-boom in construction, but a noticiable pendulum swing in a positive direction.

The thing is that the productive people have been leaving faster than they've been arriving. What California has is not enough anymore to overcome how broken the state is. Some people may stay, but businesses would rather set up their new office in Utah or Arizona.

Sure, and when AZ and UT get up to a population of 37 million, then they'll have a completely different set of problems like CA does now. Even the great miracle of TX isn't all it's cracked up to be. Things become a bit more difficult when your population booms to 25 mil+.

some people have been putting around a lot of hooey

i don't think any of those three assertions hold water under scrutiny. me are a productive person and i ain't a goin' anywhar, the state ain't "broken" - what is that supposed to mean, anyway? - and, try to find qualified engineers by the tens of thousands, not to mention 37 million consumers making enough money to live in california, in utah or arizona

To me, it feels kinda like having 2 senators for a population of 37 million, while states like WY and VT have the same 2 senators for pops of under 1 mil. A little unbalanced.

The only states that aren't hurting badly are a few of the smaller agricultural states in the midwest, like the Dakotas. California's demise is overstated. Its problems look huge because the state is so big. As the biggest blue state, the "death of Cali" is largely a right wing fantasy.

The sunshine brings high heat and high pressure. That's a double whammy when it comes to "OMG, this air is fucked."

Not even a whiff of the ocean. And Dear Gravel, how I miss it.

And if there were a ha'penny of a social liberal 'round here, my moderate/conservative ass would be it.
