Texas College GOP Leader ‘Jokes’ About Obama Assassination, Wingnut Blogs Silent

And again, the ‘satire’ excuse
Wingnuts • Views: 18,748

The wingnut blogs are still frothing and spewing hatred at Occupy Wall Street today; they’re all ranting in unison about a random protester who threatened to fire-bomb Macy’s.

Meanwhile, the top student official for the College Republicans at the University of Texas posted on Twitter that the idea of assassinating President Obama was “tempting.”

Not a word from the wingnuts about this.

At 2:29 p.m. ET, UT’s Lauren E. Pierce wrote: “Y’all as tempting as it may be, don’t shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we’ve EVER had! #2012.”

And as usual when a right winger is called out for making threatening comments about the President, Pierce is using the “joke” excuse, and the other Republicans at UT are backing her up.

“Insofar as she’s a representative [of the College Republicans], maybe it shouldn’t be said, but she’s made a positive statement in a way, ” said Cassie Wright, the group’s vice president.

“I don’t really see anything wrong with it,” Wright added. “It’s just a personal comment, not representative of any group. Just freedom of speech, you know?”

A look at the College Republican National Committee (CRNC) will find some really interesting alumni. Between them and their post-grad thinktank, the Leadership Institute, we have a lot of distinguished activists: Jack Abramoff, Breitbart, O’Keefe, and Ashley Todd (the ‘B’ girl from the last campaign.) There are others that slip my mind.

Ben Sherman, at Burnt Orange Report:

Joking about assassinating the president is not funny - it’s extremely dangerous. But there was no joke implied by Pierce.

We live in a culture of right-wing violence. They have overwhelmed the Secret Service with an unprecedented number of death threats against the president. The number of right-wing militia groups has skyrocketed by 250 percent since President Obama took office.

Wright, you’re wrong, but you’re not the only one.

The right-wing message is “you’re with us or you deserve to die.” This is obvious in the rhetoric of any Republican or right-wing commentator: those that oppose their agenda are threats to the sovereignty of the United States.

For a notable segment of the right-wing population, this makes threats against the president justified and giggle-inducing.

Pierce implied that President Obama’s life is only worth sparing because it would hurt the Republican cause if he were assassinated.

I understand accidental verbal diarrhea, even of the Cain/Perry sort. I truthfully do not understand written flubs of this magnitude. You type the whole thing out, see it at the very end, and have to take positive action to broadcast the entire thought (or here, ‘thought’) to those around you. You can’t do it accidently.

re: #15 erik_t

Exactly. I mean, the word ‘tempting’ on it’s own is very revealing. It’s not even saying (which is already reprehensible) that the assassination of Obama would be something that, you know, wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world, but that it tempts, that it’s something that appeals to you.

Frankly, there are political leaders in this country who I would not mind dropping dead. But I don’t find the idea of violently killing them ‘tempting’, and anyone who does is an evil fucker.

And she knows the audience she’s talking to. She knows they’ve been stoked up with hatred of the socialist Commie Obama.

18 RadicalModerate  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 10:21:32am

This is standard fare for the College Republicans - remember they are the organizations who think that “Affirmative Action Bake Sales” are a good idea, and have recently supported white nationalist groups like the YWC.

19 Charles Johnson  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 10:21:51am

This was no accident. The right wing lives in a world of absolute hatred for President Obama — the derangement is so complete that they’re divorced from reality, and can write things like this without ever thinking it might be wrong.

Everybody around them thinks and says the same evil, hateful crap, so why should they think it’s wrong? The epistemic closure is total.

20 lawhawk  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 10:24:44am

Joking about assassinating the president (regardless of political affiliation) is not funny. It’s not a joke, and can’t be implied or inferred to be a joke. Period.

Assassination is an act of extremism and is an extreme form of political terrorism.

Our nation prides itself on a peaceful transition of power, and this idiot wishes for the assassination of the President all because she doesn’t like him or his policies. Screw Pierce.

From the article I linked above:

[Youth for Western Civilization founder, and leader Kevin] DeAnna has something else in common with Rove, Reed and Norquist — they were all trained by the Leadership Institute, the influential foundation that for more than 30 years has prepared conservative activists for jobs in politics, education and government. Dozens of members of Congress — including six elected in November — and tens of thousands of state legislators, congressional staffers and campaign operatives have passed through its doors over the years, the institute says.

DeAnna is the institute’s deputy field director, supervising field staffers in the Northeast at the same time he runs YWC.

Speaker Boehner says GOP won’t allow savings from war drawdowns to go to jobs program

With a special deficit-reduction supercommittee floundering, the top Republican in Congress warned Thursday that he won’t permit savings from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to pay for President Barack Obama’s jobs spending agenda.

Democrats on the deficit panel proposed last week to use war savings to pay for a $300 billion jobs program along the lines President Barack Obama wants, plus take steps to protect the upper middle class from the alternative minimum tax and extend financing for doctors who treat Medicare patients.

“I’ve made it pretty clear that those savings that are coming to us as a result of the wind down of the war in Iraq and the war in Afghanistan should be banked, should not be used to offset other spending,” said House Speaker John Boehner.

Disclaimer:
I am a trained professional (sort of). Do not attempt the action discussed below at home unless you are willing to risk severe psychic damage, distorted hearing, and high blood pressure.

I listen to Limbaugh several times a week to get a heads-up on the latest talking points from the insane right-wing mainstream (formerly the insane right-wing fringe). I do this because I co-host a local call-in show once a week, and Limbaugh is the obvious source of most of the denser guano the callers throw at us.

For the last few days, Limbaugh has contended that none other than President Obama is behind the crack-down on Occupy protestors. For example, police in Berkeley (“of all places”) cleared out an Occupy encampment early this morning. According to Limbaugh, Obama has ordered this (“the mayors have received their calls”) because the Occupy movement has outlived its usefulness and become an embarrassment to the left. It is an article of faith on the radio right that Obama is behind the Occupy movement. He and his minions, including the Marxist czars and the undead boogey-man ACORN, ginned this up in an attempt to create an astroturf movement to offset the Tea Party. In the right-wing universe, the effort failed because the Tea Party is composed of upstanding citizens, while the nefarious Obama minions were able to recruit only hippies, criminals, and illegal aliens to their ranks.

Breitbart, Daily Caller, etc are pimping a video of Occupy San Diego holding a moment of silence for the White House attacker. Probably not. The guy is poorly spoken and confused but it seems he intended it to be in solidarity with the White House, not for the attacker.

So surprise there. Obama’s job proposals don’t have a chance in hell of passing. Our only hope is whatever he can squeak through with executive orders and unilateral action.

32 Obdicut  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 10:37:28am

re: #30 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

In a way, I don’t think these assholes do intend to ‘provoke’. They’re just totally irresponsible and don’t care if they provoke, because they would actually be happy if Obama got shot. The only reasons they state for that not being a happy occasion is that it might garner him or his views sympathy.

Texas College Republicans respond on Facebook:

TCR Press Release

AUSTIN, TX – This afternoon news broke regarding a tweet made by Texas College Republican’s Secretary Lauren Pierce that made light of what might have been an assassination attempt at the White House.

“We would like to assure all of our supporters that neither TCR, nor any of the affiliated chapters, condone the comments made by Ms. Pierce from her personal Twitter account. This issue will be handled with the utmost of care. TCR has always prided itself on being an organization of principle, strong leadership, and integrity; and it is unfortunate that Ms. Pierce’s comments have affected TCR in this manner.

TCR respects the sanctity of human life, and although we may disagree politically with President Obama, our organization respects President Obama and the position he holds as our Chief Executive and Commander-in-Chief. Our organization also realizes that calls for violence are the never the solution for any disagreement, political or otherwise.

TCR is now calling for the official resignation of Ms. Pierce from both her position as Secretary of the Texas College Republicans, and as the President of the University of Texas College Republicans.”

###

Texas College Republicans is the statewide federation of over 30 College Republicans chapters in Texas. A branch of the College Republican National Committee and auxiliary of the Republican Party of Texas, TCR works to grow the influence of the Republican Party on campuses, campaign for conservative candidates at all levels of government, and develop leaders for future party service

This is the second call for the resignation of a state officer for Texas College Republicans this year. Former Texas College Republicans President Charlie McCaslin resigned in March after a disparaging YouTube video was posted of him giving a derogatory speech at a TCR function.

I’m glad they’re calling for her resignation, but this seems to be a pattern of these people being called upon to resign after publicity. I don’t think this is the first time these people have said crap like this.

It’s easy for anyone, including me, to sometimes forget how destructive hateful speech can be.

Today, in his blog, Andrew Sullivan writes that he was seated next to Andrew Breitbart on a plane, and they got along very well. Speaking for myself, had I been in that situation, I would have politely, and privately, sought out a member of the flight crew, and asked that they change my seat.

There is a WORLD of difference between sincere disagreements, however passionate, and someone who spews hate speech like other people breathe air. There are way too many hateful people on both the left and the right. All of us should try to speak up more when we’re exposed to hatred, anything from a racist joke to Lauren Pierce’s contemptible tweet.

Acceptance in polite society is a privilege, not a right. I hope Lauren Pierce experiences plenty of social rejection in the coming days and weeks; she’s earned it.
