Romney’s running away
Politics • Views: 27,315

Here’s a thread to keep up on breaking news from the Florida GOP primary election.

Currently, with 56% of the vote counted, it’s 48% for Romney vs. 31% for Gingrich. It’s going to be a landslide for Romney.

UPDATE at 1/31/12 5:03:29 pm

And that’s it — Associated Press just called the election for Mitt Romney. A decisive 17-point victory over Newt Gingrich.

There's something ironic about me pissing away all that money in Las Vegas over the years, only to have that wingnut casino mogul give the money I pissed away to Newt Gingrich, who's also pissing it away.

At this point, the GOP electorate deserves exactly what they will get with either one, afaic.

5 jamesfirecat  Tue, Jan 31, 2012 5:07:06pm

Wow for the first time Romney is actually winning instead of just being able to divide and conquer the "Not Romney" vote.

Not that the "not Romney" vote had a lot of good places to go, but it is still impressive.

Oh, this is so much fun. Here are the current numbers from Florida, per Google:

Mitt Romney 649,170 47.1%
Newt Gingrich 433,593 31.5%
Rick Santorum 181,555 13.2%
Ron Paul 95,158 6.9%
Other 18,750 1.4%

The freepers are blaming both Santorum and Paul for Newt losing, saying that they split the conservative vote and prevented a Real Conservative from beating the evil Mormon flip-flopper they all hate.

Note that Gingrich support in the Panhandle could be indicative how well he will continue to do in the "Old South" (recall the adage that in Florida, South is North, and North is South). I see that Gingrich is winning all the Panhandle apart from a liberal enclave in Tallahassee. Romney wins just about everywhere else that Democrats are expected to do well.

A few things strike me about Romney:

1) This sounds like he is accepting the Republican Nomination speech.
2) Romney isn't afraid to lie about the President. Not simply bend the truth, but flat out lie.
3) Romney treats Obama with absolutely no respect. A lot of it sounds like a personal animosity, which leaves me confused what it could be.

I'm not sure what's going on with Romney.

They keep heading right until either the moderates break off or the religious so-con wingers break off and form a new party. That's the best case scenario. In a worse case, they languish out power until either the country shifts their way (by the reasonable people self-deporting, or something) or they modernize. They still have power in congress, so the end is not all that near.

I've said this several times. Newt holds a deep animosity towards the GOP; he feels like they basically threw him under the bus (which they did, but his treatment was more than deserved). In his mind it's a win win, if he can't win he'll just sabotage the race to try and create as much chaos as possible.

Dry lakefront Texas town gets water trucked in

Tanker trucks loaded with water have become the lifeline for a Texas lakefront village that came precariously close to becoming the state's first community to run out of drinking water during a historic drought.
...
For more than a year, nearly the entire state of Texas has been in some stage of severe or exceptional drought. Rain has been so scarce that lakes across the state turned into pools of mud. One town near Waco, Groesbeck, bought water from a rock quarry and built a seven-mile pipeline through a state park to get water. Some communities on Lake Travis moved their intake pipes into deeper water. And Houston started getting water from an alternative, farther away reservoir when Lake Houston ran too low.

I don't think third parties are actually viable on their own. Proportional representation and parlaments certainly allow multiple parties but our winner take all system all but guarantees two parties. The existing two parties also protect that turf against third parties.

So the Tea Party isn't a real party but rather an unofficial part of the Republican Party. Instead, I think the Republicans will fracture and stay out of power. Kind of a time out. Then they'll cool down. Rinse, repeat.

Lest we forget,

First, there is a challenge against the Winner take all in Florida. (since Florida is in violation of RNC rules by awarding the delegates winner take all when their primary is prior to April 1st)

Second, Romney has won a whopping 7% of the total number of delegates he needs to win the Republican Nomination even with Florida winner take all.

Third, while Romney can try to project a sense of inevitability, he still hasn't managed to claim support from the conservative wing.

Everyone else can think this is over, certainly Romney wants it to be over. But it's not. Not by a long shot.

Now, if Romney has a convincing win on super Tuesday, then... yeah, it's over.

If the economy continues to limp along at a reasonable pace the moderates will stick with him. Despite the internet outrages I think the meat world conservatives will vote for Mitt. The liberals are a wild card. If Obama takes action against Iran or they get sucked into OWS radicalism they could bail and stay home on election day. Hard to tell.

It'd be silly/foolish of Obama to make any sort of overt move on Iran before the election unless they directly attack us first, and I really don't see him likely to do it. Also given how Mitt Romney is Mr. 1% (well more like Mr. 0.06%) why would any self respecting OWS supporter turn down a chance to vote against him?

I don't think third parties are actually viable on their own. Proportional representation and parlaments certainly allow multiple parties but our winner take all system all but guarantees two parties. The existing two parties protect that turf against third parties.

So the Tea Party isn't a real party but rather an unofficial part of the Republican Party. Instead, I think the Republicans will fracture and stay out of power. Kind of a time out. Then they'll cool down. Rinse, repeat.

Reading the rw blogs, you will find the brighter of the commenters start to realize there never was a Tea Party.

OT: There is an interesting clip of Irshad Manji (who is a Canadian muslim woman scholar and author) on Roland Martin Reports from yesterday. It can be found here.

[Link: rolandmartinreports.com...]

She discusses the difference between domestic violence and honour killings and makes a clear distinction. One similar to the distinction I drew yesterday. I have a lot of respect for Ms. Manji and have followed her writing for many years. She is a devout, moderate muslim struggling to regain the narrative for what it means to be Muslim. She has in the last few years become increasingly alarmist about an increase in radicalism amongst muslims, fostered primarily by Saudi money.

Thoughts on Gingrich:

1) He's a little more subdued. He's got his mania reigned in a bit. So now it comes across as passionate rather than crazed.

2) Gingrich has decided to double down on the populist theme. Which is interesting and the irony knows no bounds.

3) He's going after the President, but not with the same venom as Romney.

That's my opinion after all how else can we honestly justify all the money we spend on anti ICBM technology if we don't use it as a reason to accept people we don't like having nukes rather than premptively conquering them.

To my mind this is like worrying about your neighbour building a musket when you've got an assault weapon. They might get a shot off. They might even hit something. Then you rock and roll and that's the end of that problem.

Totally true, but Romney is white (and not Kenyan or Muslim), so the base may eventually hold its collective nose and vote for Romney in the general. It's what he's counting on with this line of no-respect attacks on Obama.

Mitt tried the "Obama is a decent man, I just disagree with him on important issues" line a few months back. The base hated hearing such reasonable and respectful language used about Obama, so now Mitt's telling them what they want to hear. Mitt stands for nothing, so he'll do anything to win. That's the problem if you ask me. All of them want to be the next Reagan and I have to say this, none of them are, Reagan for all his failings was a guy who ran on optimism and furthermore the country is different in 2012 than 1980. Asking the so-cons to evaluate their policies is like telling a small child they're wrong. Romney I think will be tainted with the flip flop label much like Kerry was in 2004 for the Democrats. If you ask me, and I say this as someone who worked for Kerry's election to the presidency in 2004 that will be a problem for Mitt since he really is reminiscent of candidate Kerry. I'm sure it's easy to tell who wrote this today on Facebook:

A friend emailed me this notice from her local Alaskan school today. As the school notice makes clear: anything above -55 degrees below zero is warm enough for our Alaskan young’uns! Global warming? What global warming?

I just had to share this with all those who are enjoying the balmy 65 degree (above zero) weather in the Beltway today and the 70+ degree weather our Florida voters are enjoying!

Well, it might be well below freezing this week in Alaska, in January... but around the nation extreme warm weather has been the way this winter. From this week:

THIS TEMPERATURE IS TIED WITH 4 OTHER DATES FOR THE 2ND WARMEST DES MOINES DAY EVER RECORDED IN JANUARY. ONE OF THOSE DATES WAS JANUARY 5TH 2012. THE ALL TIME JANUARY RECORD HIGH TEMPERATURE IN DES MOINES WAS 67 DEGREES ON JANUARY 8TH 2003.

THE HIGH TEMPERATURE AT LAMONI IOWA REACHED 63 DEGREES TODAY...BREAKING THE PREVIOUS RECORD HIGH OF 60 DEGREES SET IN 1988.

And so forth, around the nation:

Heat Records Demolish Cold Records for 13th Consecutive Month; January Ending With Incredible Ratio of 27.5 to 1 in Contiguous U.S.

A very mild January 2012 is ending with more new high temperature records being set in the Mid Atlantic region and the Northeast. Washington Dulles has at least tied broken the daily record for January 31 with 66° (old record 65° in 1993). By mid afternoon, the 54° at Bridgeport CT exceeded the old record of 53° set in 1974. At Islip NY, where the climate history extends back only to 1986, the temperature of 52° before noon broke the old record of 51° set in 1988. The 63° at Georgetown DE exceeded by 3° the record of 60° in 1974.

The 63° at Atlantic City tied the record from 1988 in a climate history which began back in 1874.

This is now the 13th consecutive month that new high temperature records have exceeded low temperature records in the U.S., since cold records eked out a ratio of 1.5 to 1 vs. heat records in December 2010. The preliminary reports from the National Climatic Data Center through January 30 show heat records crushing cold records by a ratio of 20.7 to 1, nearly as high as the incredible 22.2 to 1 last August. Without the 25% of total January cold records set in Alaska, the ratio for the contiguous 48 states is 27.5 to 1. With meteorological winter now two-thirds over, the ratio for the season as a whole is at 6.2 to 1.

But all of that is no problem, for Newt will deliver us from the anti-Christ himself (BHO).

"Romney got 51% of the female vote. Gingrich 29%. Women vote for the guy they think is the most attractive. It’s the same whether the woman is a Republican or Democrat. It’s hard-wired into their system and you can’t get around it. The KGB (who orchestrated the American women’s lib movement in the sixties), America’s advertising agencies, and Hollywood moviemakers have all known this and have been capitalizing on it for years. Who do you think were the ones voting for Obama in 2008? They all thought he was ohhh so cute! Fainting included. Why do you think his handlers chose him in the first place? I’ll get flamed for this, but the worst thing to have happened to America was for women to have been granted the franchise. They can’t handle politics or philosophy. They just know how to swoon. Come on, look at Romney. He’s matinee-idol handsome. His handlers know that. So does the media. So does the Republican elite. Ask these women voters what Romney stands for and they can’t tell you. They just know they like him."

Romney I think will be tainted with the flip flop label much like Kerry was in 2004 for the Democrats. If you ask me, and I say this as someone who worked for Kerry's election to the presidency in 2004 that will be a problem for Mitt since he really is reminiscent of candidate Kerry. I think Romney will be forced to like Kerry to choose a VP who is much more populist in style.

I wonder if there is a Romney haters for Romney website yet?

This may sound far-fetched at first, but it really is the most accurate analysis of Mitt's "anti-charisma" that I've seen (h/t recusancy):

The Uncanny Valley: What Robot Theory Tells Us About Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney is the storybook presidential candidate. He's successful, good-looking and a family man, to boot. Yet one of this political season's enduring puzzles has been the former governor's consistent inability to bond with voters. It's been suggested that Romney's robotic persona may be to blame -- and perhaps the analogy isn't far off. Much as people are repulsed and disturbed by automatons that mimic humans closely but imperfectly, Romney inexplicably turns voters off despite looking like the textbook image of an American president. Roboticists call this unsettling effect "the uncanny valley" -- and Romney is stuck deep at the bottom of it.

Nah,,, they got that angle figured out too. According to many there, women are threatened by an intelligent attractive conservative woman, so they won't vote for her. I sometimes wonder how many of them can function with the amount of cognitive dissonance that must be echoing in their heads.

I've had times that I've gone there, and in a matter of just a few minutes I'm screaming at my monitor "How can you be so freaking stupid???"

RBS

Yeah, we women definitely don't have issues that concern us. Education, national security, the economy and so on matter less to us that if a guy's chin is cleft and his cheekbones strong.

So, where does the GOP go from here? The tea party is dead, Mitt gets the nomination and will probably lose to Obama. All the traditional avenues of radicalization and moderation have been tried and failed. Do they just wait until the Dems to fuck up before regaining power? New strategy or the same old shit?

I'd say something about reviving the Ghost Dance, but that would be racist, and also creepy.

The Romney family, prominent in U.S. politics,[1] was descended from Gaskell Romney[2][3][4][5] (born, 1871, Saint George, Utah; died, 1955, Salt Lake City, Utah), and includes Gaskell's son George W. Romney (born, 1907, Colonia Dublán, Galeana, Chihuahua, Mexico; died, 1995, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan) the three-term governor of Michigan, 1963–1969. Through Gaskell Romney's wife, Anna Amelia Pratt,[6] it has an ancestral link with renown early Mormon leader Parley Parker Pratt[7][8][9] and also is linked by marriage to the Smith family, the Matheson family, and the Huntsman family.[10][11] Cousins of the family reside in the Mormon colonies in Mexico.[12][13] The Pratt family dates back to the 17th century in Connecticut, originating from William Pratt who served as a representative to the colonial legislature of the state for 23 terms. The Romney family immigrated to the United States from Dalton-in-Furness, England in the 1840s.[14] Aside from politics and government, their legacy extends into business and law, professional and college athletics, religion, the arts and sciences, architecture, philanthropy, and defense.

re: #277 Petero1818

Freerepublic is really good stuff right now, but I had to share this quote as it stands apart from the rest:

Holy Shit.

Maybe they don't like the fact that Newt Gingrich is on his third wife, and the fact that she has transformed herself surgically and otherwise into a plasticine version of Cindy McCain in a tragic effort to satisfy his grandiose vision of what his wife should be.

I'm amazed that any woman would ever consider voting for him.
