Great piece by not far left political scientists about the religious cult and destructive insurgent movement the GOP has become: Let's Just Admit It: The GOP is the Problem
We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.
The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.
When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges.
“Both sides do it” or “There is plenty of blame to go around” are the traditional refuges for an American news media intent on proving its lack of bias, while political scientists prefer generality and neutrality when discussing partisan polarization. Many self-styled bipartisan groups, in their search for common ground, propose solutions that move both sides to the center, a strategy that is simply untenable when one side is so far out of reach.
It is clear that the center of gravity in the Republican Party has shifted sharply to the right. Its once-legendary moderate and center-right legislators in the House and the Senate — think Bob Michel, Mickey Edwards, John Danforth, Chuck Hagel — are virtually extinct.
According to the "intellectual right", everyone from Glenn Beck to Rick Perry to Jim Demint to Mark Levin, America started losing its way 100 years ago. The Progressive movement of the early 20th century, with its strikes for decent working conditions, its child labor laws, direct election of senators and granting women the right to vote, is the period that began the decline of America.
What else can you say except that these "modern thinkers" are literally a century behind the times, which of course calls their modernity into question.

Of course my favorite neo-feudal oath remains the one near the beginning of "The Warrior's Apprentice"
The Sergeant opened his mouth. Miles, dropping his voice, cut across his beginning roar—by God, it was an effective trick—"Attention, please, Sergeant. I require your witness. Pilot Officer Mayhew is about to make oath."
The Sergeant's jaw tightened like a vise, but he came to attention.
"Put your hands between mine, Arde—like that—and repeat after me. I, Arde Mayhew—is that your full legal name? use that, then—do testify I am an unsworn freeman, and take service under Lord Miles Naismith Vorkosigan as an Armsman simple—go ahead and say that part—" Mayhew did so, rolling his eyes from left to right. "And will hold him as my liege commander until my death or his releases me."
That repeated, Miles said, rather quickly as the crowd closed in, "I, Miles Naismith Vorkosigan, vassal secundus to Emperor Gregor Vorbarra, do accept your oath, and pledge you the protection of a liege commander; this by my word as Vorkosigan. All done—you can get up now."

I like the one from "The Stainless Steel Rat Gets Drafted".
An officer with little golden bars on his shoulder strutted in and stood
before the flag.
"This is a very important occasion," he said in a voice heavy with importance. And occasion. "You young men, the fittest in the land, have been chosen as volunteers by your local draft boards to defend this country we love against the evil powers abroad that seek to strip away our freedoms. Now the solemn moment that you all have been waiting for has arrived. You entered this room as funloving youths. You will leave it as dedicated soldiers. You will now be sworn in as loyal members of the army. Raise your right hands and repeat after me . . ."
"I don't want to!"
"You have that choice," the officer said grimly. "This is a free country and you are all volunteers. You may take the oath. Or if you choose not to, which is your right, you may leave by the small door behind me which leads to the federal prison where you will begin your thirty-year sentence for neglect of democratic duties."
"My hand's up," the same voice wailed.
"You will all repeat after me. I, insert your own name, of my own free will . . . "
"I, insert your own name, of my own free will."
"We will do it again, and we will do it correctly, and if we don't get it right next time, there is going to be trouble."
We did it again, and correctly. Repeating what he said and trying not to hear what we were saying.
"To serve loyally . . . to show respect to all of the senior. officers . . . death if I show disloyalty . . . death if I should desert . . . death if I sleep on duty . . ." and so on to the very end, which was "I do swear this in the name of my mother and father and the deity of my choice."

In 500 years or so many of the great cities we have today will be abandoned (at least in part.)
Marine archeology is a fascinating subject - the remains of human settlements are under water all around the world. Given the attraction sea shores have had to H. sapiens - probably due to abundant protein sources - a great deal of the background, pre-history if you will, of our species is likely under water.

The off shore areas around the Arabian peninsula most likely hold answers to several key questions about H. sapiens expansion.
And, off shore of the Iberian peninsula may have the last remains of any significant Neanderthal groups, and early H. sapiens establishment.
And then there are the mysteries of humans populating SE Asia and how they got from island to island. And, the earlier development of H. floresiensis could be hiding under the sea (today) also - the cave in which the remains were found is accessible by boat.
Here in the Americas, off shore California might be fruitful given what has been found on the Channel Islands - the question remains of the peopling of the Americas on how many surges there were, and the hypothesis that the first wave moved down the coast line very quickly to the tip of South America has some merit.

The gondola is propelled by a person (the gondolier) who stands facing the bow and rows with a forward stroke, followed by a compensating backward stroke. Contrary to popular belief, the gondola is never poled like a punt as the waters of Venice are too deep. Until the early 20th century, as many photographs attest, gondolas were often fitted with a "felze", a small cabin, to protect the passengers from the weather or from onlookers. Its windows could be closed with louvered shutters—the original "venetian blinds". After the elimination of the traditional felze—possibly in response to tourists complaining that it blocked the view—there survived for some decades a kind of vestigial summer awning, known as the "tendalin" (these can be seen on gondolas as late as the mid-1950s, in the film Summertime). A sumptuary law of Venice required that gondolas should be painted black, and they are customarily so painted now.
Now you know!

Impersonation: You may not impersonate others through the Twitter service in a manner that does or is intended to mislead, confuse, or deceive others

Twitter strives to protect its users from spam and abuse. Technical abuse and user abuse is not tolerated on Twitter.com, and will result in permanent suspension. Any accounts engaging in the activities specified below are subject to permanent suspension:
If a large number of people are blocking you;
The number of spam complaints that have been filed against you;
So basically, if you're a parody account meant to mimic someone else or to deceive people into thinking that you're a different poster, you can get banned. If a bunch of people block you or complain against you, you can get banned.

You'd be surprised.
Dig a bunch of holes and stick things in them... 10,000 years later the it's still findable. Once Stonehenge and Avebury gave archaeologists the clue what to look for, they found dozens of places that had wooden versions long since rotted away. And of course burial mounds... erosion doesn't erase them, and the skeletons and artifacts inside are remarkably well-preserved.
Then if you go inland, and find adobe stuff, or carved out of cliffsides -- that evidence lasts as long as any stone structure. Maybe longer, since dilapidated stone buildings tend to get their components repurposed into fences or paving.

When we lived near there, one family builder remained, making them for about 150K in 1990 dollars. Looking for my satellite photo of the main islands.

Good morning Lizards. Nice weekend in Philly, but back to work.
Watched the tape of Obama at the dinner. Good for more than a few laughs, some well-pointed critiques couched in humor, and a display of something that I don't think Mitt Romney can emulate without a full upgrade, and even then.
The self-perpetual outrage cycle is simply boring when you get down to it. And we probably have at least four more years of it to sit through. The personality types don't surprise me though. I've met and/or worked with too many people whose goal in life appears to be to bitch about every single moment of it as if it is a personal affront.

Loved that film.
A couple of years ago another author and I wrote a series of vampire novels set in late 18th Century Europe. The second was set mostly in Venice, at the time of Paolo Renier's death. He was the second last Doge of Venice.
It was interesting seeing things I've written about in moving pictures.
One thing not shown that I would have liked to see was the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, The House of the Shell of Snails. We used that as the lair? haven? of the central characters.
Unfortunately I had to leave the project. My co-author disliked something I posted on the internet and they decided they had the power to order me to never post anything again any where unless they cleared it first. They were a Republican. It was my first real intimation of how far gone the GOP and its followers had become.

Theres a banner ad I noticed on the site this morning that reads something like: "Homosexual sex acts to be taught in to students? Say NO. Sign the petition now."
Clicking it leads to this:
Dear Pro-Family American,
The Radical Homosexuals infiltrating the United States Congress have a plan:
Indoctrinate an entire generation of American children with pro-homosexual propaganda and eliminate traditional values from American society.
Their ultimate dream is to create a new America based on sexual promiscuity in which the values you and I cherish are long forgotten.
I hate to admit it, but if they pass the deceptively named "Student Non-Discrimination Act," (H.R. 998 & S. 555) that’s exactly what they’ll do.
Better named the "Homosexual Classrooms Act," it's dangerously close to becoming the law of the land.
H.R. 998 already has 147 co-sponsors in the House!
And S. 555 already has 34 co-sponsors in the Senate!
That’s why I need you to act quickly to protect our nation’s youth.
You see, the Homosexual Classrooms Act contains a laundry list of anti-family provisions that will:
***Require schools to teach appalling homosexual acts so "homosexual students" don’t feel "singled out" during already explicit sex-ed classes;
***Spin impressionable students in a whirlwind of sexual confusion and misinformation, even peer pressure to "experiment" with the homosexual "lifestyle;"
***Exempt homosexual students from punishment for propositioning, harassing, or even sexually assaulting their classmates,as part of their specially-protected right to "freedom of self-expression;"
***Force private and even religious schools to teach a pro-homosexual curriculum and purge any reference to religion if a student claims it creates a "hostile learning environment" for homosexual students.
I’m helping lead the fight to defeat the radical homosexuals but I need your help.
Please join me by taking a public stand AGAINST this outright assault on our nation's youth by signing the Protect our Children's Innocence Petition below!
I don't think there's much I can add to that.

Hogansburg, NY. Ah, the NORTH COUNTRY.
I note from the article that the aggressive DA in these cases is from neighboring St Lawrence County, not Franklin County where the part of the St Regis Reservation where the cigarettes are manufactored is.
No idea what the area looks like now. My family moved from up that way over 30 years ago. Back then it was a few towns with some industry (mainly along the St. Lawrence Seaway) surrounded by lots of small towns running family-level dairy operations (corn and cows). Fewer farms and a bit more tourism as you got over into the Andirondacks.

I like that you used that phrasing. It highlights a big issue in the Christian community. They throw such a big hissy fit over their teen children running off and fornicating wildly with each other, but they don't understand that these kids are doing it because they discovered that SEX IS GOOD. Maybe if, instead of demonizing it and trying to make it into a shameful and "nasty" act, Christians tried explaining to their kids how it really works and how to go about it responsibly, it wouldn't be such an "epidemic". And who knows, maybe the parents might actually get around to loosening their sphincters a little bit.

There's also... ok, another one of my longwinded maybe-should-be-a-page comments.
I submit the thesis that the pill is one of the top ten, possibly top five, revolutionary inventions of humankind.
Revolutionary inventions change societies completely. This change takes generations before becoming 'the norm', and during the change engenders intense opposition. The opposition is due largely to fear: fear of the unknown, fear of the different, fear of the consequences. Add to this a mistrust of the invention as well; its failures are magnified, its successes diminished.
Preventing sex used to be wise. Sex => Children. Children, though loved, are a burden. Children having children breaks both, most of the time. So doing everything possible to prevent that problem was good.
The pill mooted the old defenses. But it isn't trusted, and the change it brings is feared for numerous reasons. That fear underlies a lot of the more staid Christian (and other religious) stances about sex, and it explains the vehemence of the opposition.
I think most here know I'm on the side of fairly free sex - get and use the protections, don't break promises, and make sure your partner is mentally competent and willing. But I understand the reasons for the objections.

You should seriously write a thesis paper on that. It's an interesting concept, and one I haven't thought about before. A lot of the Biblical prohibitions have some basis in applicability to the ancient world. The underlying reasons have since been lost in a sea of literalism, though.

I pondered paging this, but since it's really just a PR discussion for a new book, rather than news reporting, a proper opinion piece, or discussion, I figure just linking the story makes the most sense.
From NPR this morning, people actually acknowledging that the GOP has gone completely off the rails and is the reason for the current level of government dysfunction.
'Even Worse Than It Looks': Extremism In Congress?
Congressional scholars Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein are no strangers to D.C. politics. The two of them have been in Washington for more than 40 years.
They came together in 2006 to write a book about dysfunction in Congress, called The Broken Branch. But their assessment of Congress today is even more dire — so dire, they've called their new book It's Even Worse Than It Looks.
Mann, a senior fellow of the Brookings Institution, and Ornstein, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), join Morning Edition host Steve Inskeep to talk about the book, which comes out this week.
The book claims that democracy in America is being endangered by extreme politics. From the first day of the Obama administration, Ornstein says, our constitutional system hasn't been allowed to work.
"When we did get action, half the political process viewed it as illegitimate, tried to undermine its implementation, and moved to repeal it," Ornstein says.
Ornstein and Mann make no secret of who they blame for most of the dysfunction in Congress.
"One of the two major parties, the Republican Party, has become an insurgent outlier – ideologically extreme; contemptuous of the inherited social and economic policy regime; scornful of compromise; unpersuaded by conventional understanding of facts, evidence, and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition," they write.

Let's face it, prior to the pill biology was destiny. As a woman your choices were abstain forever (or at least till menopause) or spend a large part of your life being a mother. Those who took the former route were unusual.
Today, abstention is not required. No need for tansy or pennyroyal in the garden. [both, though very poisonous, were used in teas due to their abortifacient effects; cohosh, angelica, and parsley were also used.] A woman is free from the risks and costs of sex unless/until she is ready for them.

Right. Defaulting to the perceived "weaker sex." They might as well start talking about "hysteria" and "hysterectomies" again while performing brain surgery and smoking a pipe. Typically these same dorks will say "I can find a woman because all women are looking for beta males and I'm an alpha male." It's closer than you think. D'oh!

(nod) But penicillin only removed the consequence from men.
That's not true. Women can get syphilis too, and it can be passed on to children.
Let's face it, prior to the pill biology was destiny. As a woman your choices were abstain forever (or at least till menopause) or spend a large part of your life being a mother. Those who took the former route were unusual.
Again, untrue. The Romans had a very efficacious abortafacient. Many 'aboriginal' tribes use extended breast-feeding as a way of preventing ovulation, and therefore allowing recreational sex. Condoms, while not in any way proof, are still a moderately effective contraceptive, and those were available long before the pill.
Today, abstention is not required. No need for tansy or pennyroyal in the garden. [both, though very poisonous, were used in teas due to their abortifacient effects; cohosh, angelica, and parsley were also used.] A woman is free from the risks and costs of sex unless/until she is ready for them.
I'm not denying that the pill had massive effects-- many books have been written on the subject-- but that it's also partly the Western approach to sex that made the pill have such a huge effect.

Even leaving everything else aside, which is leaving quite a lot aside, how is this sort of thing supposed to make a kid straight? Is the idea "Oh, they'll see how much they enjoy it and the whole gay thing will go away." or something? I mean, I'd have to think having sex I didn't want forced upon me (Hmm...what does that sounds like...) would only turn me off to the whole straight sex thing, not make it more likely.

Solyndra Not Dealing With Toxic Waste At Milpitas Facility
MILPITAS (CBS 5) — Three months ago, CBS 5 caught Solyndra tossing millions of dollars worth of brand new glass tubes used to make solar panels. Now the bankrupt solar firm, once touted as a symbol of green technology, may be trying to abandon toxic waste.
It’s a tedious process. Slowly but surely, the shattered remains of brand new solar panel tubes head to a recycling plant in Hayward.
Meanwhile the next phase of the company’s liquidation is under way. It involves getting rid of all the heavy metals left inside the building that were used to make the panels.
The Fremont Fire Department’s Jay Swardenski oversees the cleanup. He said some materials, such as cadmium, are toxic, and hard to dispose of.
“They don’t degrade at all, so we want to make sure we don’t allow these materials to get into the environment,” he said.
It’s not just the leftover hazardous materials, but also the machinery used to apply them to the glass tubes. “Certainly those tools will need to be decontaminated, cleaned up, handled correctly as they are taken apart,” he said.
I want my money back!

Fact is that Solendrya is winding down its operations and that money was a bet on the company.
It didn't pan out, but other DOE loans have thus far helped get companies going. Future loans will likewise do the same, though the number of companies and the amount of money at stake will be vastly limited because of the Solendrya fallout.
That shouldn't be the case - and it isn't a matter of picking winners and losers as the GOP has been claiming. It's about making funds available for startups so that they can have a chance to succeed to the point where there can be a ROE development of new technologies.
The GOP is flogging green energy as though it's the bogeyman, but it just shows their shortsightedness considering that there are alternative energy resources that could not only reduce reliance on foreign energy sources, but which can make the US more self sufficient for production of energy domestically - a real energy security plan.

The GOP's entire worldview is shortsighted. They're constantly pining for a mythical past that never existed, worshiping an inflated caricature of Reagan, and are still living in the Cold War, even though it's been over for decades.
They've got absolutely no concept of the future, so their social conservative wing keeps crippling students with useless drivel like Creationism and Intelligent Design and with trying to destroy the educational system from within. They reject science, math, reason, and the 20th Century. It's insane to see a political party thoroughly destroy itself, but they're managing to do it in spectacular style.

Although you may find this hard to believe, the fact that some government activity (usually initiated by Republicans for the purposes of lining their own pockets or pursuing some madcap theo-warfare scheme) is wasteful and corrupt does not mean that I don't think that having a democratically elected government that is capable of undertaking large scale projects is a good thing.

Taxes do not belong to you - they belong to society, and as a society we come up with ways of agreeing how to spend the money, which is not the same thing. If you don't like that approach, you can give anarchy a try, but I don't think you'd like that either.
Your next mistakes are spelling "execs" as "exects" and "its" as "it's".

I demand government always be perfect otherwise it proves the whole thing is just a sham.
Also, notice how he's whining about Solyndra, who got $527 million from Treasury, but he ignores the more than $4 trillion we've spent in Iraq so far.
It's amazing how "fiscal conservatives" focus on the programs they don't like (NPR, PBS, Solyndra, etc.) but ignore the far larger defense budget that they revere and claim is untouchable.

re: #248 NJDhockeyfan
If the bonus money was due them due to contractual obligations, then that takes precedence - and we're talking about the court approving the bonuses in this case. You do want the courts and government to uphold contracts, don't you? Voiding contracts just because you don't like them would have societal impacts beyond this case.
Most of the bonuses awarded were between $15,000 and $25,000, with the three top beneficiaries receiving $30,000, while the three lowest received $10,000 each.
The Energy Department finalized a loan guarantee of $535 million to Solyndra on Sept. 3, 2009, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – better known as the $787 billion stimulus.
On Aug. 31, 2011, Solyndra filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Chapter 11 allows a debtor company to restructure and work out agreements with creditors without being liquidated.
Court documents referred to the bonuses as a “Key Employee Incentive Plan.” The ruling determined the payouts to be “in the best interests of the Debtors, their creditors and all other parties in interest.”
A separate question could be whether a trustee should have been appointed to oversee the restructuring (and who could then go ahead and cut/eliminate the bonuses as part of the restructuring) - we aren't talking the liquidation of the company in any event.

I was pointing out to NJD that if he really cared about government waste, he would do well to look at the Iraq war. Since he doesn't consider that a waste of money, apparently, we have to wonder just how sincere his concern for the waste incurred by the Solyndra funding is.

That's one explanation.
The other is that NJD only cares about government waste when it's* being spent on projects that are intended to mitigate the catastrophic effects of consuming fossil fuels willy-nilly, and not when it's being spent on blowing brown people up in a faraway land (and securing the flow of oil).

Shocka!
Bin Laden files show al-Qaida and Taliban leaders in close contact
Documents found in the house where Osama bin Laden was killed a year ago show a close working relationship between top al-Qaida leaders and Mullah Omar, the overall commander of the Taliban, including frequent discussions of joint operations against Nato forces in Afghanistan, the Afghan government and targets in Pakistan.
The communications show a three-way conversation between Bin Laden, his then deputy Ayman Zawahiri and Omar, who is believed to have been in Pakistan since fleeing Afghanistan after the collapse of his regime in 2001.
They indicate a "very considerable degree of ideological convergence", a Washington-based source familiar with the documents told the Guardian.
The news will undermine hopes of a negotiated peace in Afghanistan, where the key debate among analysts and policymakers is whether the Taliban – seen by many as following an Afghan nationalist agenda – might once again offer a safe haven to al-Qaida or like-minded militants, or whether they can be persuaded to renounce terrorism.

Romney spokesman claims credit for Obama auto rescue Mitt repeatedly slammed
Mitt Romney tells two basic types of lies: the kind where he's feeling awkward and unpopular and is just trying to make his audience like him more, for even an instant, and the brazen, ridiculous, intentional campaign lie. The latter case is where we get a campaign predicated on the idea that you just shake the Etch A Sketch and no one will notice. Just as the idea of the Etch A Sketch originated with Romney campaign adviser Eric Fehrnstrom, so do some of the most blatant lies. That's certainly the case with Fehrnstrom's new attempt to claim that President Obama's rescue of the American auto industry was all Mitt Romney's idea:
"[Romney's] position on the bailout was exactly what President Obama followed. I know it infuriates them to hear that," Eric Fehrnstrom, senior adviser to the Romney campaign, said.
"The only economic success that President Obama has had is because he followed Mitt Romney's advice."
Continues.

LaBarbera Attacks Republicans Who 'Have a Homosexual Problem,' Floats Anti-Gay Third Party
After American Family Association Bryan Fischer went into all-out war with Mitt Romney’s campaign for hiring an openly gay foreign policy spokesman, his “straights only” position won support from other Religious Right leaders like Gary Bauer and Tony Perkins. Now, Peter LaBarbera of Americans For Truth About Homosexuality is jumping to Fischer’s defense as well, telling talk show host Janet Mefferd on Friday that Romney is “putting his finger in the eye of the pro-family movement” with the hire, even though Romney has emphasized his anti-gay bona fides throughout the campaign.
Later, LaBarbera denounced the “hidden homosexuality” in Washington D.C., in particular the Republicans who “have a homosexual problem” and are not public about it. He also told Mefferd that “Americans would rally to our position” on homosexuality if only the GOP recruits a candidate like Rick Santorum who can inspire the anti-gay “silent majority” and combat the “media, Hollywood and academy [that] are 1,000 percent for perversion.” If not, LaBarbera warned that the Right may “see a bigger push for a third party,” a view also supported by Family Research Council Vice President Tom McCluskly.
I really hope they run with that.

Former Lexington Dem Party Exec Arrested for Stealing Medicaid Info
Authorities last week arrested a 36-year-old former Lexington County Democratic Party executive committeeman after they say he improperly accessed the personal information of more than 228,000 people on Medicaid. Christopher Lykes Jr., who was working at the S.C. Department of Health and Human Services at the time, allegedly sent thousands of names and personal information of Medicaid beneficiaries in several counties to his personal email address. The state will pay roughly $1 million for identity protection for those affected. Lykes has had business connections with Richland Democratic Sens. Joel Lourie and Darrell Jackson who both represent insurance carriers that employed Lykes as an independent contractor, according to WLTX. — Corey Hutchins

Bad timing
1st of the month some seniors get their checks. Blocking entrances to banks isn't going to endear the OWSers to the retired citizenry
Oh, come on... it's going to be fabulous. It's May Day.... It's protests...
It's another opportunity for me to bust out my trusty camera and take photos of the proceedings just steps from my office.
How bad could it be?
There will be protests, but I doubt they'll be of such a size and type that they'll cause much in the way of problems - at least down here in Lower Manhattan.

Romney autobiographers are right twice a day.
Unless you're suggesting he has multiple personalities as well as multiple positions, there's at most one Romney autobiographer.

Whatever you do, don't assert that basic mathematics literacy is as important as basic linguistic literacy.

It also looks like the police are pretty well prepared to deal with any serious disruptions.

The Gu'auld? The Ori? Whose god exactly is Obama at war with? I'm kinda confused on the topic. And if he is at war, and he's winning, what does that say about the gods that he's gone and jumped ugly with?

And tomorrow is pretty much the equivalent of Labor Day for everywhere but the US.
And also need to find a bonfire to go leap over three times.

The Disney Corporation once sent out a memo telling all its employees that the usage of the phrase Mauschwitz to describe Disney was forbidden. Within a few hours, they were calling it Duckau.

That's a bit like the anecdote I saw where a employee consultant would survey whether he'd get business or not from a company by walking through their cubicle area and count how many Dilbert cartoons he saw visibly posted.
If he saw none he knew the management was massively overbearing and he'd get business.
If he saw lots of them he knew management had lost touch and he'd get business.
In between was a few that indicated that a degree of criticism was allowed without triggering a backlash. Which indicated that there was less chance of getting hired.

Did he factor in people who never put up Dilbert cartoons because the guy who writes them is a total douchebag?
I tended to put up two things: One that said "Because shut up, that's why" and Far Side cartoons.

Basically this. Dilbert can be funny at times, but Scott Adams is at pretty much all times an asshole.
