Politico Adopts Breitbart’s Ridiculous ‘Vetting’ Frame

Just a terrible article
Politics • Views: 29,541

When I first clicked a link to this article at Politico today, I thought my browser had been hijacked and redirected to breitbart.com: To GOP, Blatant Bias in Vetting.

In their constant quest for that Drudge Report link and the resultant millions of page views, Politico even adopts breitbart.com’s ridiculous “vetting” catchphrase. What a joke. They’re so invested in the “horse race” view of the 2012 election that their pandering to the right is now completely out in the open.

On the front page of its Sunday edition, the New York Times gave a big spread to Ann Romney spending lots of time and tons of money on an exotic genre of horse-riding. The clear implication: The Romneys are silly rich, move in rarefied and exotic circles, and are perhaps a tad shady.

Only days earlier, news surfaced that author David Maraniss had unearthed new details about Barack Obama’s prolific, college-age dope-smoking for his new book, “Barack Obama: The Story” — and the Times made it a brief on A15.

No wonder Republicans are livid with the early coverage of the 2012 general election campaign. To them, reporters are scaring up stories to undermine the introduction of Mitt Romney to the general election audience – and once again downplaying ones that could hurt the president.

“The New York Times has given Obama the longest wet kiss in political history, and they have done him a favor again,” former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said. “The New York Times does a huge expose that Ann Romney rides horses. Well, so does my wife, and a few million other people. Watch out for equine performers!”

Republicans cry “bias” so often it feels like a campaign theme. It is, largely because it fires up conservatives and diminishes the punch of legitimate investigative or narrative journalism. But it also is because it often rings true, even to people who don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh – or Haley Barbour.

Who are these people to whom the GOP’s “media bias” argument “rings true,” even though they “don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh?” This is the laziest sort of “argument by assertion” journalism, because there’s absolutely nothing to back up this statement.

Devin Gordon at GQ has one of the best takes I’ve seen on this ludicrous article: Five Points About Politico’s Hatchet Job on NYT and WaPo.

Let’s get macro for a moment. This Politico story was written by Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen, two people at the very top of the organization’s masthead. It’s effectively an unsigned house editorial. And it levied a charge of journalistic malpractice at two of Politico’s biggest rivals. The house position of Politico, as evidenced by this piece, is that they are fair and their chief competition is not. It’s a thinly disguised, fundamentally craven argument for Politico’s superiority in the world of political coverage. Let’s call this article for what it was. It wasn’t journalism. It was business.

It’s all about the Drudge links.

I always find it amusing when a member of the media i.e. Limbaugh complains about bias in the media when they play a big role in the same media. Romney's being out of touch with regular Americans shows that he doesn't understand the economic wants of average Americans. Obama smoking pot in college is something that really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

I must wonder why there is no less biased or opposite biased aggregation to Drudge. The obvious conclusion is the market is just not there. As an additional point to observe, the online media wars are heating up as print falls off. So we will see far more sniping among the outlets just like this. hang on this roller coaster ride is just getting started.

The media always has a huge vested interest in a close race. I can not imagine a scenario where the money involved could be separated from the editorial policy. This goes way beyond politico. It's the MSM citizens united fiasco.

Anti-Gay and Anti-Muslim Activists Come Together for 'Rise Up California'

Eagle Forum’s San Diego chapter is hosting a conference in June to unite conservatives in Democratic-leaning California before the upcoming election:

Tomorrow, Friday June 1, 4-9pm prominent national, state and local leaders will address hundreds of conservatives at the "Rise Up California" Eagle Forum San Diego Convention at Skyline Church in Rancho San Diego. The purpose of the convention is to gather, energize, educate, empower and activate conservative Californians 4 days prior to the primary, and into the November general election.

Skyline Church is led by Jim Garlow, a close adviser to Newt Gingrich who led efforts to pass Proposition 8 and has since become a national spokesman for anti-gay causes.

Brian Brown and Jennifer Roback Morse of the National Organization for Marriage will also address the conference alongside Vision America’s Rick Scarborough, a birther and “Christocrat” who believes AIDS is part of God’s judgment and is working against the “sexual anarchy led by sodomites.” The NOM leaders’ appearance with Scarborough, who as Kyle noted earlier today mourned the decline of the white population, won’t help their attempts to distance NOM from a campaign memo based on sowing racial divisions and build a “rainbow coalition” to oppose the gay rights “storm.”

Joining them will be Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy, the anti-Muslim conspiracy theorist who was banned from CPAC and the “Weyrich lunch” for his extremist views and attacks on fellow conservative leader Grover Norquist.

Get the fuck out of my town.

NRSV was made by non-fundie scholars (Bruce Metzger rings a bell?), and while they employ the annoying gender-neutral approach, they always specify such alterations in footnotes. Otherwise, they're based on the best manuscripts (and text-critical studies) and many academic books prefer to cite their translation. I'll go with NRSV.

Rick Scarborough Worries that More 'Non-White Families' Will Mean Fewer Christians in America

Now we are witnessing more babies being born out of wedlock than in wedlock, leading to escalating social problems. That brings us back to this latest revelation on the growing influence of minorities in America. The sad reality is that more non-white families will also mean an America with more fatherless families.

...

Children raised in a one-parent household are also less likely to attend church services as both children and as adults, According to various surveys, as adults, they are less likely to go to church, pray, read the Bible or listen to Christian radio. They are more likely to get their values from movies, popular music, video games and the dominant (non-Christian) culture.

The increasing polarization of the races is an additional cause for concern. Politicians and self-styled community leaders urge blacks and Hispanics to see themselves as members of a race first and foremost, and not as Americans or Christians.

...

[A]s Christians, we must reach out to minorities in families at risk, with the message of the Gospel – one of repentance, love, salvation and a helping hand. Many churches of every ethnicity are doing a heroic job here. But they need our help.

This is the best way to guarantee that America stays America – a nation animated by Christian values – regardless of the nation’s racial composition.

Coastal N.C. counties fighting sea-level rise prediction

State lawmakers are considering a measure that would limit how North Carolina prepares for sea-level rise, which many scientists consider one of the surest results of climate change.

Federal authorities say the North Carolina coast is vulnerable because of its low, flat land and thin fringe of barrier islands. A state-appointed science panel has reported that a 1-meter rise in sea level is likely by 2100.

...

Several local governments on the coast have passed resolutions against sea-level rise policies.

When the General Assembly convened this month, Republican legislators went further.

They circulated a bill that authorizes only the coastal commission to calculate how fast the sea is rising. It said the calculations must be based only on historic trends – leaving out the accelerated rise that climate scientists widely expect this century if warming increases and glaciers melt.

The bill, a substitute for an unrelated measure the N.C. House passed last year, has not been introduced. State legislative officials say they can’t predict how it might be changed, or when or whether it will emerge.

Longtime East Carolina University geologist Stan Riggs, a science panel member who studies the evolution of the coast, said the 1-meter estimate is squarely within the mainstream of research.

“We’re throwing this science out completely, and what’s proposed is just crazy for a state that used to be a leader in marine science,” he said of the proposed legislation. “You can’t legislate the ocean, and you can’t legislate storms.”

[Link: blogs.scientificamerican.com...]

NC Considers Making Sea Level Rise Illegal
...
In a story first discussed by the NC Coastal Federation and given more play May 29 by the News & Observer of Raleigh and its sister paper the Charlotte Observer, a group of legislators from 20 coastal NC counties whose economies will be most affected by rising seas have legislated the words “Nuh-unh!” into the NC Constitution.

Okay, cheap shot alert. Actually all they did was say science is crazy. There is virtually universal agreement among scientists that the sea will probably rise a good meter or more before the end of the century, wreaking havoc in low-lying coastal counties. So the members of the developers’ lobbying group NC-20 say the sea will rise only 8 inches, because … because … well, SHUT UP, that’s because why.

That is, the meter or so of sea level rise predicted for the NC Coastal Resources Commission by a state-appointed board of scientists is extremely inconvenient for counties along the coast. So the NC-20 types have decided that we can escape sea level rise – in North Carolina, anyhow – by making it against the law. Or making MEASURING it against the law, anyhow.

Here’s a link to the circulated Replacement House Bill 819. The key language is in section 2, paragraph e, talking about rates of sea level rise: “These rates shall only be determined using historical data, and these data shall be limited to the time period following the year 1900. Rates of seas-level rise may be extrapolated linearly. …” It goes on, but there’s the core: North Carolina legislators have decided that the way to make exponential increases in sea level rise – caused by those inconvenient feedback loops we keep hearing about from scientists – go away is to make it against the law to extrapolate exponential; we can only extrapolate along a line predicted by previous sea level rises.

Here's What TV's First Prime-Time Schedule Looked Like In 1946

Today, when we turn on the TV and channel surf, our eyes scan over a very bloated television guide.

With a barrage of reality series, dramas and films easily accessible at our fingertips, it's difficult to imagine a time when dead air existed.

Here's the schedule for the first prime-time fall schedule for each of the four networks in 1946 — ABC (marked by A), CBS (C), NBC (N) and the failed DuMont (D).

The block gives a peek at early television which consisted of variety series, Western films, quiz shows and early educational programming. It's also relatively barren.

Relatively barren pretty much sums up the amount of watchable TV shows around today as well.

Oklahoma Doctor Refuses To Provide Rape Victim With Emergency Contraception

According to the victim’s mother, Rhonda, the doctor at the hospital not only refused to help her, but did not get another doctor to provide them the medication. Emergency contraception’s effectiveness diminishes over time, and is most effective when taken immediately. The doctor, however, was shielded from providing the perfectly legal medication because of Oklahoma’s “conscience clause“:

She was treating my daughter like she had done something wrong. [...] My daughter said, “is it you who wont give [emergency contraception] to me? Do you have them here and you just won’t give them to me?” and she said, “That’s right. I will not give you emergency contraceptives because it goes against my beliefs.“

This is the GOP's vision for America, not only one where the doctor can deny a prescription, but where the rape victim is not even allowed to ask for one...

This is what we have to remind voters about every day until November.

Well, I’m one of those conservatives who don’t listen to Rush (or Hannity, or Haley Barbour, and I absolutely loathe Bobby Jindal) who found the NYT piece on Ann Romney’s horseback riding to be heavily laced with true but scary words (rarefied, wealthy, deep pockets, private haven, expensive esoteric breeds, seven-figure cost, trainer involved in a lawsuit) that were supposed to point out - what? The Romneys are wealthier than most of us? Was that a secret?

But I don’t get this “vetting” business either. IIRC, candidate Obama was heavily “vetted” right here at LGF, throughout the election period. Was nobody paying any attention?

That's the thing I can't get. In 2007 into 2008 there was virtually no stone unturned in trying to figure out who Obama was, who helped shape his political, social, and religious outlook, associations, linkages, etc., and he was given all kinds of heck over the Ayers and Wright associations (and still is).

I'd say he's been sufficiently vetted and has a record on which to defend and run in 2012.

Romney is getting the kind of scrutiny in 2012 that he didn't have in earlier campaigns, or even when as governor of Mass. Some of the stuff is getting rehashed, but new items are coming to light. Some is relevant. But the most informing stuff is who he's currently associating with, his refusal to rebuke the extremists within his own party, and openly courting conspiracy theorists all in the name of getting to 50.1%.

Hayworth Spokesman: ‘Hurl Some Acid At Those Female Democratic Senators’

The Facebook page, called NY19 U.S. House of Representatives Discussion Center, encourages “civil multi-partisan discussion about issues impacting citizens of New York’s U.S. House District represented by Republican Congresswoman Nan Hayworth.” On it, a question about gas prices was also critical of Hayworth. Townsend responded to one commenter, Tom, by bringing up the “war on women” and suggested they “hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators.”

The comment:

Listen to Tom. What a little bee he has in his bonnet. Buzz Buzz. My question today … when is Tommy boy going to weigh in on all the Lilly Ledbetter hypocrites who claim to be fighting the War on Women? Let’s hurl some acid at those female democratic Senators who won’t abide the mandates they want to impose on the private sector.

BREAKING: Two Republican Judges Declare DOMA Unconstitutional

Well, you knew this was coming;

Conservatives Decry 'Bizarre' Ruling Finding DOMA Unconstitutional, Lament 'East Coast Liberal Freak Show'

Today, yet another court ruled that the Defense Of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, this time finding that Section 3 of the law, which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages in states where they are legal, fails the “rational basis test” as applied to laws that deny equal protection and harm a group long subject to discrimination. The unanimous ruling by the three judge panel of the First Circuit Court of Appeals, including two Republican nominees, found no “connection between DOMA’s treatment of same-sex couples and its asserted goal of strengthening the bonds and benefits to society of heterosexual marriage.”

Bruce Hausknecht of Focus on the Family’s CitizenLink criticized the court’s “unfortunate exercise of judicial tampering with the rules by which constitutional cases are decided,” and the Alliance Defense Fund’s Dale Schowengerdt said the decision permits states to “hold the federal government, and potentially other states, hostage to redefine marriage.”

Remarkably, Massachusetts Family Institute president Kris Mineau claimed that the First Circuit Court of Appeals shouldn’t have any federal power to rule on the case as “a Massachusetts-based court “…seemingly unaware that it is a federal court!
