Speaking of dangerous beauties, I see Romney spoke to Ralph Reed’s FFC gathering:
Speaking via satellite today to the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual conference in Washington, Romney said the U.S. should help arm those in Syria fighting against the government of President Bashar al-Assad “by encouraging our friends there, like the Turks and the Saudis, to provide weapons to the insurgents.”
I’m still trying to get my head around the idea that a blatantly self-identified “Christian” organization is trying to drum up support for the sale of weapons to escalate a war.

Oh, and another dangerous beauty - a beautiful mind in a dangerous person?
In a note to the director of the FBI, dated July 29, 1958, Special Agent-in-Charge (SAC) Los Angeles notes details from an L.A. Times article from two years prior, regarding his relations with his wife: “The appointee’s wife was granted a divorce from him because of appointee’s constantly working calculus problems in his head as soon as awake, while driving car, sitting in living room and so forth, and that his one hobby was playing his African drums. His ex-wife reportedly testified that on several occasions when she unwittingly disturbed either his calculus or his drums he flew into a violent rage, during which time he choked her, threw pieces of bric-a-brac about and smashed the furniture.”

Just wait until Obama suggests something similar…they will immediately preach turning the other cheek!

I’m just curious about what the FFC would have to say if Obama referred to the Turks and the Saudis as our friends.
I have trouble taking the FFC’s political thought too seriously.

Saw that earlier, a disappointing footnote to the life of a genius.
These days, if someone like Feynman had done something like that, the whole world would have known about it within an hour.
Not sure it’s better that way.

On a possibly related note:
Researchers find a strong association between alcohol dependence and chromosome 5q13.2
There is a strong genetic influence on the risk of developing alcohol dependence (AD).
Copy number variations (CNVs) refer to a class of genetic variation that can delete and duplicate whole genes, leading to powerful genetic effects.
A first-of-its-kind study has found a significant association between AD and CNVs on chromosome 5q13.2.
People wonder if “intelligence” is related to one’s genetic makeup. Research has shown there is an element of that, but nurture is also important.
Nevertheless, all the truly brilliant people I have known have suffered from either being social outcasts, and/or having serious demons of one sort or another (e.g., depression).
I wonder if CNVs related to brain development which may give some sort of cognitive advantage also cause the negative social status or emotional handicaps?

So long as you don’t wind up with something like this.

I went to see a chihuly exibition. The glass is fantastic (a salad bowl starts at $25,000), but I have some reservations about his drawing/painting. If one takes away the back lighting it looks like some stuff I’ve seen done by elephants, but what do I know.
