Sam Donaldson on the Daily Caller

Wrong and unusual
Wingnuts • Views: 36,047

The wingnut crowd has been frantically casting about for a way to defend Daily Caller “journalist” Neil Munro’s crass behavior at yesterday’s White House announcement, and some of them are comparing Munro to Sam Donaldson and his famously tough questioning of Ronald Reagan. Donaldson responded to these comparisons today:

What this man did yesterday is something new, to me wrong and unusual. I think it is probably the result of the growing incivility of the times, the competition among reporters and news organizations to be noticed not only for the work product but for the theatrics of the gathering…and there is one more factor, let’s face it: Many on the political right believe this president ought not to be there – they oppose him not for his polices and political view but for who he is, an African American!

I see the similarity. Sam Donaldson was also rude. He always seemed so smug.

Sam said it. That bow tie Tucker even envoked this real journalist. I'm sure the statement in private was a bit more peppery.

Somewhat related: I walked into a store the other day and one of the first things you see upon entering is a poster of Barack Obama with crosshairs on him and the caption: ENEMY OF THE STATE.

This is a small independently owned business.

I was considering spending some money there but decided not to after seeing that. Thing is, the place was completely packed so obviously his political views weren't hurting business. I also couldn't help but notice that all five employees around at the time just happened to be white and male.

Trying to normalize the interruption of a President's speech or formal remarks is just stupid. It's not comparable to an interruption during an interview.

5 blueraven  Sat, Jun 16, 2012 7:33:31pm

I dont know if there is racism involved here, or just arrogance and incivility.
But when you add up "YOU LIE" from Joe Wilson, the finger wagging from Governor Brewer, this reporter heckler and the members of congress who have questioned Obama's citizenship, something is wrong.

This has to be stopped or it will become SOP. The press needs to call these people out and keep calling them out.

Donaldson interrupted Reagan in the middle of speeches?

No, this is the reporter equivalent of Rep. Joe Wilson's infamous "You lie!" during an Obama address to Congress.

Ok folks, I need some opinions here. I've been writing steadily on my immigration themed novel and I've just finished this segment featuring a TV news interview in which the interviewee is intended to be a wingnut. What I'm looking for is do you think I'm made him wingnutty enough? Does he seem a fair characterization of the typical far right mentality in this area?

“Joining me today is Arizona Congressman Mike Arnold. Thank you for being here Mr. Arnold.”

“Thank you for having me.”

“Well, let's get down to it. Obviously there are a lot of people that are unhappy with the immigration law Arizona is attempting to put in place. Where do you stand in all of this?”

“Let me make this clear Grayson. I do NOT have a problem with immigrants. This nation was built on immigration and I completely support those who wish to come to the United States LEGALLY. Those who wish to do so by other means are another matter entirely.”

“Are you saying that illegal aliens should have no rights whatsoever?”

“Every human is entitled to the same basic rights Grayson, but here's what this boils down to as far as I'm concerned: A criminal is a criminal. If you commit a crime, you pay the price. Look at the term: Illegal Alien. ILLEGAL Alien. It's pretty self explanatory. People who fall under that definition are in violation of Federal Law and deserve to be punished. What kind of precedent are we setting if we suddenly decide to look the other way on this kind of 'rule breaking'?”

“A lot of people are saying Arizona is overstepping their bounds with this law. The general feeling is that immigration laws and policies should be left up to the Federal Government. Do you agree?”

“Not in the least.”

“So how would you respond to people who hold that view?”

“I'd be more than happy to leave immigration enforcement in the hands of the Federal Government...IF they had shown they were competent and effective in doing so. The truth is though, that this administration seems more than happy to just pretend the immigration problem doesn't really exist and leave states like ours out to dry.”

“Can you explain a little more on what you mean when you say 'out to dry'?”

“Federal Immigration policies and procedures are written by government bureacrats thousands of miles away from the border. This is Arizona. The border is in our backyard. This legislation was written and developed by people who have seen the problems and issues firsthand. We have people dying on and near the border every day due to drug and gang violence. The Feds claim they are cracking down on it and saving lives but I'm sorry, I just don't see it.”

“How do you react to people who say this bill will lead to racial profiling of Hispanics?”

“I think people who feel that way don't understand this law. The law does not say an officer can simply pull anyone off the street and ask them for papers. It SAYS that if an officer is already investigating a crime and has reason to believe that one or more of the persons involved may be in the country illegally, he is obligated to act on that and notify immigration enforcement authorities.”

“What if the law actually does cause an increase in racial profiling?”

“I highly doubt that will happen. I think most fears to that regard are silly and unfounded. As I stated a moment ago, this bill is most definitely NOT a free pass for racial profiling. It was never intended that way.”

“I'd like your reaction to this story if you don't mind: About four months ago, a couple living in the country illegally along with their 11 year old daughter were deported after being found out. The girl had been born in Mexico but had lived in the United States since she was two years old. She had only known America her entire life, but suddenly had to go back to a country she virtually no connections to. Do you think this situation should have been handled differently? Should the girl have been allowed to stay?

Arnold chuckled a bit. “Ok, I know I'm going to catch some heat for what I'm about to say, but I don't care. What happened to that girl was unfortunate, but the fact is she and her parents were here ILLEGALLY. I don't know how many times I need to come back to this. That girl might have had a massive culture shock upon returning to Mexico but guess what? That's where she was born. Neither she nor her parents have any claims to U.S. residency or citizenship. In my opinion the decision was right.

“That could be described as a cold hearted point of view Mr. Congressman.”

“That may be so but it's an accurate point of view nevertheless. Let me make something clear here: The United States of America is NOT responsible for what happened to the girl. Not the American President, Not the American Government and NOT the American people. Why not? Well it's simple. It was her parents...HER PARENTS who made the decision to come to this country illegally. They and they alone bear responsbility for the circumstances the girl now has to live with.

You call me cold hearted. I can't help but wonder if maybe it might be time to get a little cold hearted with these people. I have no desire to coddle criminals. I think the Government of the United States has for far too long been far too lenient and forgiving when it comes to illegal immigration. As a result, Arizona steps up and takes some of the fight into its own hands and yeah, we're going to get a bit of a backlash from that, but you know what? Bring it on.

I'm not scared of Liberals. I'm not scared of Conservatives. I'm not scared of whites, blacks or Mexicans. It's time people started putting their foot down on this more often and I'm glad Arizona is leading the way. It's a proud moment for our great state.”

16 goddamnedfrank  Sat, Jun 16, 2012 8:01:53pm

I just like how the story behind Munro's behavior keeps changing. The first version (the truth), that it was intentional, that his employer and the right were proud of his disrespect didn't focus test well so they had to change it up. Version two, that he thought the President was finished with his prepared remarks (disseminated to the press in advance) was simply too patently absurd to pass the smell test. So now they're on to version three, which is just version one fancied up with an historic footnote that doesn't actually bear scrutiny.

Version four will involve Obama controlling Munro with some kind of African bush magic, and therefore really interrupting himself.

Sam Donaldson, Chris Wallace To Conservatives: You Lie

In a post on his Twitter feed, conservative pundit and CNN contributor Erick Erickson asked: "Also, anyone remember Sam Donaldson shouting questions at President Reagan?"

In a reply to Erickson on Twitter, conservative writer John Podhoretz wrote: "Not while he was delivering remarks. Never."

This kerfluffle has nothing to do with respect for the Office of the President of the United States. I wouldn't interrupt a goddamned high schooler's random class talk in this manner.

It's not about the office of the Other. It's the fact that the Other is an 'Other'. If Obama weren't an 'Other', we wouldn't be talking about this.

I wonder how much hate mail Chris Wallace is going to get for calling "Bullshit!" on Munro's actions. I hope he retains enough of his father to refuse to walk his remarks back tomorrow. No, he's just prone to abject simplism, equivocation and general non thoughts. We live in a society where demand for low food prices, a cheap domestic workforce and outdoor hard physical labor is largely met by illegal immigration. Ignoring the decades of policies that led people to come and raise families here is really just willful ignorance. Insisting on moronically equating crimes of status with traditional criminality is to admit oneself utterly lacking in basic discretionary intellect. Finally, to moronically wave away the consequences of States arrogating themselves to constitutionally defined federal roles by simply saying "bring it on" is the antithesis of an actual argument.

Also irritates me when disagreements are seen as partisan attacks. Instead of, like, being objectively wrong (as in evolution attacks).

Have you read up on Darby?

Specific claims by others in attendance at the protest (e.g., Ms. Gabby Hicks) state that FBI informant Darby was "...the one to suggest violence, when the rest of us clearly disagreed..." and that "[a]s an older seasoned activist, Darby had a lot of sway over Crowder and McKay, making them susceptible to his often militant rhetoric"[7] i.e. that he acted as an agent provocateur. As well, a former Darby girlfriend and various former colleagues attribute self-serving rather than altruistic or patriotic motivations to Darby's decision to act as an FBI informant.[7]

I really wouldn't be surprised if he was trying to game the system again.

Pinellas School Board candidates talk testing, parent involvement

[...]

One question, about whether creationism should be taught in biology classes, drew a range of responses. Givens and Elliott Stern, who's running in District 1, agreed that there was room to teach about evolution and creationism.

"As long as it's facts that are being taught in our schools, that's what counts," Stern said.

Cassandra Jackson, who's running in District 7, prompted laughter when she paused and said, "I guess if we're going to tell the truth, tell the whole truth, under God."

Notice, once again, how everyone misses the entire point of the actual rulings of our judicial system. When, oh when, will a candidate come out and simply speak the legal truth: creationism is a sectarian religious dogma, and as such in this country the government cannot endorse (in this case by teaching) sectarian religious tests.

Well, simpler than that.

No matter what the field of biology may hold, our constitution is quite clear: the United States is a secular government that is expressly forbidden in upholding religious tests or endorsing religions.

Creation dogmas are found in a variety of religions and to teach one or more of them in a setting funded by public monies has been found by our court system to be incompatible with our constitutional government.

This made me giggle.

Politico reporter Tim Mak interviewed several conservative activists about Daily Caller reporter interrupting President Obama during the amnesty press conference yesterday.

The general consensus was that Munro may have been off on his timing, but the media was worse in making it the story and not Obama’s amnesty push.

Ah yes... it was a non-story, a minor mistake. But teh lamestreem media made it a story when the amnesty push was the real story.

Don't tell that to the other wingers who triumphulated about Munroe's Donaldsonesque badgery.

A group of Republican senators on Thursday introduced legislation aimed at blocking the Obama administration’s controversial efforts to extend minimum wage and overtime protections to 2 million in-home care providers through Department of Labor regulations.

Sens. Mike Johanns, R-Neb., and Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., along with 11 other lawmakers, introduced a bill known as the Companionship Exemption Protection Act, to amend the Fair Labor Standards Act to preserve the current state of the law’s so-called companionship services exemption.

2011 was a good year to show how lower corporate taxes and higher profits aren't proportional to job creation. There was a one-year window for bonus depreciation that allowed corporations to depreciate 100% of a capital asset purchased in 2011 on their 2011 taxes. Corporate profits soared to the highest level ever.

But just ask the GOP how much job creation the lower taxes and higher profits translated to. And now, the program is over and the businesses that took advantage of the tax break last year have to pay the piper this year and five more.

The GOP's gonna do what they did prior to 2010: Gonna whine that extension, rather than the making permanent, of the tax cuts didn't erase the "uncertainty" that they will go away. And it's that "uncertainty" that is keeping companies from creating jobs and expanding, because they're afraid that unless the tax cuts are made permanent, they'll have to pay more next year.

88 Mich-again  Sat, Jun 16, 2012 11:22:01pm

While the GOP talks about lower taxes, all you need to do is look at my home State to see what happens when the GOP/Tea Party takes over the State Government. In early 2013, a tax bomb is going to go off in Michigan when people figure out how much higher their State tax bill is going up due to lost tax deductions..

All major tax credits except the Homestead Property Tax Credit are now gone. Donations to food banks, shelters, and food kitchens: gone. Donations to charities: gone. Donate your car: gone.

Taxes are instituted or increased on private and public pensions for certain groups of senior citizens/retirees.

Deduction for children in the family has been eliminated.

Homestead Property Tax Credit (HPTC) has been taken away for over a quarter million Michiganders with incomes between $50,000 and $82,650. Poorer and richer people still get it.

Taxes paid to cities (like Detroit) are no longer deductible on your State tax. So taxpayers will pay the full State income tax on the 1.5% of their earnings that went to pay Detroit city taxes. Nice form, Tea Party.

The companies are uncertain, give them another tax break to get them back to job creation.

The only path to sustainability is to conserve resources. Wasting less will reduce the demand and lower prices. When prices for resources fall, so will prices for finished products and this improves everyone's standard of living. So much of what we use is wasted.

Mitt Romney’s Plan To Unite Evangelicals: Pretend He’s Rick Santorum:

From the Etch-a-Sketch's mouth:

“We’re going to have to get America recommitted to those anchors, to the power of family,” Romney told the crowd at the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in downtown Washington, D.C. Saturday via satellite link. “We need to strengthen the commitment that exists in this country to family.”

“Familes are an important source of strength for the nation,” Romney told the crowd. “Rick Santorum is fond of reminding us of the study that was carried out by the Brookings Institution where they looked at the qualities that were the best predictors of happiness and in this case financial wherewithal.”

“Culture matters,” Romney told the Liberty crowd. “The power of these values is evidenced by a Brookings Institution study that Senator Rick Santorum brought to my attention.”

Because the only thing missing from my bingo sheet of reasons not to vote for Romney was echoing Rick "fuck the gays, pagans, and shamefully independent womenfolk, they have no rights unless we give them" Santorum as a guiding light on social matters.

Pinellas School Board candidates talk testing, parent involvement

Notice, once again, how everyone misses the entire point of the actual rulings of our judicial system. When, oh when, will a candidate come out and simply speak the legal truth: creationism is a sectarian religious dogma, and as such in this country the government cannot endorse (in this case by teaching) sectarian religious tests.

This. It opens up a huge can of worms. If schools start teaching the Christian version of creation, then it's only a matter of time before the parents of children of other religions demand that their versions be taught as well.

I thought he sounded a bit too articulate myself. From what I've seen the wingnuts tend to be, um, a bit short of communication skills. Sarah Palin being the exemplar of that. I believe lowering the level of Mr. Arnold's vocabulary might bring his wingnuttiness across better.

The next bit of advice comes from my own experience as a writer. I think that adding body language and voice inflections would help. In my experience wingnuts don't much care for being challenged. So make Mr. Arnold's body language aggressive and/or fearful. Make him growl or snap when answering questions.

I hope this helps.

I'd say don't do such a thing. Don't make people into caricatures, leave them as full human beings.

I'd also reiterate my conviction that the character in question did not sound nutty at all. Arizona's hand has in many ways been forced by the refusal of the federal government to take action to halt illegal immigration. SB 1070 wasn't the best way to deal with the issue, but that does not mean Arizona's desire to take action is not justified.

Israel wrong to demand release of American traitor

(CNN) -- The next time an Israeli official petitions the U.S. government to release American traitor Jonathan Pollard from prison, we should tell our friend and longtime ally in an unequivocal tone: He will die in an American prison, so stop asking!

Now, I know that's not how our State Department practices diplomacy, but there is no reason for the United States to be diplomatic with Israel when it comes to Pollard, a former Navy intelligence officer who stole secrets from this country and passed them on to Israel.

Since he was convicted of espionage in 1987 and sentenced to life in prison, thousands of Israelis have made it their mission to get him released and sent to Israel. Why? So he could be treated like a hero?

Let's be clear: Jonathan Pollard is no hero. Other than an American killing a president, he committed the most heinous crime someone from this country could do. You don't go against your own country by passing on secrets to another nation, even if it's an ally like Israel. The crime of treason is even specifically addressed in the U.S. Constitution.

This week, Israeli President Shimon Peres, who was in Washington to receive the United States' Presidential Medal of Freedom, brought with him a petition signed by 70,000 Israelis calling for the released of Pollard.

The Tea Party has to dump another turkey:

An elderly Tea Party leader has been forced to step down after telling a racist joke during a rally.

Inge Marler surprised party members with a quip about black welfare recipients that she said she found online.

She was apparently using the inappropriate joke as an ice-breaker prior to her speech on June 9 and had given no warning that she would be telling it.

‘I had no idea,’ Richard Caster, founder of the Ozark Tea Party, told the Huffington Post.

‘She had given me her whole speech, and it was about her growing up in Yugoslavia and coming to America.

‘I am on stage and then she said something not like what she gave me. I was shocked. I looked at the guy next to me and he said “oh my gosh”.’

In the joke, Marler describes a black child asking his mother what a democracy is.

‘Well, son, that be when white folks work every day so us poor folks can get all our benefits,’ the mother responds.

I included the HuffPo link, but had to use the DM article because HuffPo did not say what the racist joke was.

I really wouldn't be surprised if he was trying to game the system again.

From his wiki page...

In left-wing activist communities, Darby is widely despised for his role in McKay's conviction. He has been welcomed by conservative organizations as a patriot

When I checked his twitter feed yesterday there were lots of Anon types taunting him as a traitor. The voices don't match. There are easily dozens, if not hundreds, of other people that could be presented with the same level of "match". So why implicate Darby? It looks to me like he was chosen as a previously hated target by leftists with a drudge. Seriously, think about. What do you really think the chances are that Darby is making the calls? I'd guess it would be about 1% chance. Maybe less. If it wasn't for his association with Breitbart I'd say he might be a stand up guy.

Yeah. Two or three (I don't remember the count) "conservatives" get swatted (allegedly -- and by liberals!) over a period of two years and suddenly it's a conspiracy by leftists to silence conservatives. We're all in on it too. Just like Charles and me running the Twitter gulag.

The guy's got a wiki page? Color me impressed. Seriously, you're going to have a hard time getting anyone to give a fuck about Darby. As I said yesterday, the fact that he's now feeling the heat of presumed guilt by the community (and I'm not saying he didn't do it) is simply poetic justice. Live by the lie...

Lies. Exactly why I have an issue with it. I checked the youtube channel that uploaded the video. Just two days ago he posted a video claiming that someone named Randy Taylor-Hahn was the voice of the swatter with a link to the guy's address, phone number, pictures of his house, etc. No evidence aside from the claim that the voice matches and a long confusing story about a personal/political grudge. These "matches" have much more to do with other things than the truth.

Dear god, another rising star...

Most of his tweets are unoriginal aphorisms, and indeed originality is not his strong suit. “Randy” often tweets links to his blog (named “Somewhere In The Middle”) that consist of material plagiarized from all over the internet. There is zero original material at Randy’s blog. This is a major tell that he may not actually be anything he claims to be, as original phrasing is a hallmark of liberalism.

This…isn’t even trying. It’s below the level of a professional moron. Naked, unwashed plagiarism like this would get you kicked out of a podunk community college.

I waded through the wall of text as best I could. No evidence that he's the swat caller aside from the false claim that there's a voice match. He seems to just claim that bloggers he doesn't like are making illegal calls to police. I don't hear voice matches and he offers no other evidence that I can see in either case. And over on Stalker site "Diary of Daedalus Dorkus" long absent Stalker "panoftheforest" goes on a truly pathetic tirad on the "Twitter Wars" that showcases far right victim mentality perfectly. An excerpt (no link, since its the Stalkers):

I’ve noticed that some of our audience is not engaged in the twitter wars, and some of our posts have become disengaged in some of our Twitter War posts. Please allow me to explain why Twitter is important. Not only for the DOD, but for this election.

See, shortly after the Portly Proletariat met Rauhauser, he began stifling his critics on Twitter. No big deal, right? I mean it’s only Twitter. Wrong, the fat goon didn’t know it, but he’s found himself tangled in a web of liberal tactics to stifles conservative speak during an election year.

Look, he’s stupid and we all know it. This site is dedicated to showing that he’s a moron who Riverdances on his cock ad nauseum. However, he’s really got himself in some deep shit this round. We can usually speedbag the fat clown pretty good, but he’s in pretty deep on a conspiracy to silence conservatives that is now transcending Twitter. I know many of you don’t believe in the power of keeping the #Twittergulag as apparent as the holocaust museum, but I do. We ARE witnessing, in REAL TIME, the stifling of conservative speech, and the oppression of opposing views due to the “free media forum”.

Fight back. It’s as simple as that, and fight back at the fat bastard while you’re at it. This country is as much mine as it is the forces that SWAT me, criticize me, ban me from Twitter, and try to intimidate me. Rodan, Chen, Zappa, et al…We’re JUST bloggers, right? Take a look at this Malkin video:

re: #156 Killgore Trout

Although I believe that Brandon Darby is a borderline dirtbag, I agree that a recording of a recording of a recording of a phone call is incredibly weak evidence against either Darby or (at Patterico's assertion) Ron Brynaert. The accusations revolve around the whole Weinergate thing and Darby being behind the swating doesn't account for the Mike Stack episode or the false statements by Kimberlin that he was SWATed too. It seems to me that someone who likes Weiner a hair too much was behind the SWATs but I still don't see any real evidence linking Kimberlin to any of it. The SWATing and the lawsuits could be 2 completely unrelated issues. Both bad, neither a right/left issue IMO, but not necessarily linked.

OTOH, Calling Kimberlin a crazy, threatening, lying nutjob isn't hyperbole and anyone that intentionally associates with him is tainted. He has a decades long record of filing hundreds of frivolous lawsuits against people who piss him off for the smallest of slights culminating in the Aaron Walker arrest. That's despicable behavior but it doesn't rise to the level of trying to get someone taken out by their local PD.

FO: Meow! (Hey, quit hogging! I don't care if you're 10x my size!)

And on that note:

German police raid scores of radical Islamists' homes

BERLIN (Reuters) - About 1,000 police raided scores of buildings across Germany on Thursday in a clampdown on radical Salafist Islamists suspected of plotting against the state.

German officials fear the Salafists, who trace their roots to Saudi Arabia and want to establish Sharia (Islamic) law in Europe, are fuelling militancy among a small minority of socially alienated young Muslims in Germany.

SNIP

Among the homes targeted was that of radical preacher Ibrahim Abu Nagie, who is associated with a campaign to distribute free copies of the Koran that German officials fear could contribute to radicalization of young Muslims.

"Today's operation shows we are raising the pressure on the Salafists and are acting with resolve against their anti-democratic behavior," Spiegel Online quoted Ralf Jaeger, the interior minister of North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, as saying.

Friedrich said last month Germany was considering a legal ban on all Salafist groups, saying they were "ideologically close to al Qaeda" and bent on destroying liberal democracy.

There are a lot of dishonest and shady folks in this story but Kimberlin is the top of the heap. I could understand a bit more if he had some change of heart and owned up for his past but that doesn't seem to be the case. Just yesterday I read an article about a guy convicted of eco-terrorism who went on to get a degree in Environmental Studies. I was expecting the usual celebration/excuses for radicalism in pursuit of a greater good but was pleasantly surprised to see him talk about regret for his past and how his professors guided him to show him the errors of his past. People can change.

I just heard on the radio that Rodney King is dead, found at the bottom of a pool. What a shame.

This whole thing needs something like a 100-day rule. It's a lot of talking-head drivel, rumor mongering, and mud flinging with no real evidence backing it up. If it's a real issue (SWATTING), let law enforcement deal with it for now. Otherwise, it's simply pot-stirring for the sake of finding a pseudo-issue to yell and scream about.

Off to confuse the cat.

That's about right. From reading up on previous swatting cases they are solvable but it takes about 6 months.

Montana GOP Convention Features ‘Obama Library’ Riddled With Fake Bullet Holes
Pema Levy June 17, 2012, 10:50 AM 844

Outside the Montana state Republican Party convention this weekend was an outhouse labeled the “Obama Presidential Library” and covered in painted-on bullet holes.

Inside the outhouse contained a fake birth certificate for Barack Hussein Obama, according to the Helena Independent Record.

It was stamped “Bull——.” A graffito advised “For a Good Time call 800-Michelle (crossed out), Hillary (crossed out) and Pelosi (circled in red.)”

Continues.

Agreed. I think that demonstrates how easy it is to make a youtube video claiming there's a voice match. Some people will believe they hear a match if it fits their agenda.

And some people will not hear a match even if it's obvious, because they have an agenda.

226 Charles Johnson  Sun, Jun 17, 2012 9:10:46am

I just listened to that recording again with fresh ears, and one of the swat callers absolutely does sound very similar to Brandon Darby.

I'm not saying it's proof. But it's just flat wrong to say conclusively that they don't match. They do sound very similar, and it's not just me who thinks so.

That will be a great sound bite for virtually every Obama campaign ad.

What will Romney do on reproductive rights? The opposite of Obama.
What will Romney do on immigrant rights? The opposite of Obama.
What will Romney do on gay rights? The opposite of Obama.
What will Romney do on terrorist? The opposite of Obama.

re: #132 Killgore Trout

So why implicate Darby? It looks to me like he was chosen as a previously hated target by leftists with a drudge.

The focus is on Darby because he's been involved in these claims from the very beginning, and has a history of double-dealing and dirty tricks. Seems pretty obvious to me why some people suspect him.

229 moderatelyradicalliberal  Sun, Jun 17, 2012 9:16:25am

Note to Bob Schieffer: When Romney says that if Obama wanted to do something about immigration, he should have done so in the first three years of his administration, you are supposed to point our that the president tried to get the Dream Act passed and that Republicans blocked it. Not just let the comment stand and ask if Romney thinks the president is politically motivated in his timing.

But, that's our liberal media for you. I wonder when these news shows with falling ratings are going to figure out that it's because they are losing liberal viewers and not just conservatives?

The source of these claims has posted two youtube videos claiming to match two different people to the swatting calls. Neither one is a very good match and both are people he has personal/political grudges with. He's also posting personal information, addresses and pictures of people's homes. I don't consider him a reliable source. We are talking about a crime here, I don't think it's fair to accuse someone of a serious crime based on such flimsy evidence.

Are you aware that every single point you're making here can also be applied to the claims being made by the right wingers -- with even less evidence for them?

Where is the real evidence that Brett Kimberlin -- who seems to be a real creep, yes, we know that -- had anything to do with these incidents? There is a sum total of zero evidence for this claim. It's nothing but supposition and assumptions.

Yet, you seem much more willing to believe the right wing narrative.

The evidence that these calls are related to Kimberlin is circumstantial. The victims of the prank calls share the common thread of having written about him or had run ins with him in the past. Sure the wingnuts are known liars and their voice analysis video isn't any better than the moonbat ones. Occam's razor leads to to lean towards thinking that the swatting is probably from their political opponents. I see no evidence that it's an inside job and they swatted themselves.

No, it's not. There's a difference between circumstantial evidence -- for example, a fingerprint at a crime scene -- and unsupported assumptions. The wingnut crowd has neither direct nor indirect evidence for their accusations.

Having generated antagonistic relationships with a large group of people isn't circumstantial evidence against one man. The swattees all wrote negatively about a lot of the same people. You don't seem to know that circumstantial evidence actually is.

You also don't explain your reasoning behind your assumption of Occam's tilt. Why is it easier to think that the swatting is an opponent plot rather than a home grown publicity stunt? All you give is raw assertion with absolutely reasoning. Apparently it doesn't strike you as odd that Erick Erickson claims he preemptively warned the police that he was likely to be swatted before it happened. I find that kind of behavior and apparent certainty of foreknowledge very odd.

Agreed. It could be anybody making the calls. They've collectively pissed off a lot of different people.

Sure it's possible that the wingnuts are swatting themselves but it just seems unlikely. They are prone to publicity stunts and fake videos, etc. If they are swatting themselves they are they are putting their own families in danger to manufacture these incidents. Using their own well known activists to make the calls and be recording and screaming at the top of their lungs to get a congressional investigation which sill surely result in their own arrests. Sure wingnuts are stupid but it's unlikely that they'd hatch this grand conspiracy without someone bailing out getting nervous about the inevitable jail time.
Swatting has been around for a while mostly in Anon/4chan hacker types for quite some time. They would be the most likely suspects.
On the basis of the new voice comparison video, which is the only evidence of an inside job, I think it's highly unlikely that the FBI is going to add Darby (or that other dude) to their list of suspects.

Hi Dragonfire1981:
I know I'm late to the party, but I've got a quick question re: the following statement in your initial post:

I walked into a store the other day and one of the first things you see upon entering is a poster of Barack Obama with crosshairs on him and the caption: ENEMY OF THE STATE.

Was this a store in the U.S.? If so, you probably should let your local Secret Service office know about it. It could count as a violation of the federal law that makes it illegal to threaten the President.
