I am trying to think in terms of what the GOP is going to have to do to win. They have too much money tied up in this electino to let it go down the pan, and they do have some top strategists trying to salvage it.
But it seems that they will need some kind of crisis to pull them out, be it a man-made and/or natural crisis, one that can be used to focus on Obama's leadership qualities and put him in a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation.
War with Iran is the only thing that comes to mind, a major terror attack, be it from right or left-wing terrorists, will be used to make a case that Obama is doing something terribly wrong, or if gas prices peak in late October, (along with food prices, which will rise as a result of the drought) a lot of Americans will feel the pinch and the blame will be laid at Obam's door.
I would like to, but I still refuse to believe that the GOP is the shambles that it appears to be. Must not let wishful thinking color my powers of observation...

Just because I feel like it:
The Election 2012 song
(to the tune of "House of the rising sun")
There is a man from Michigan,
who is George Romney's son.
And he thinks he's got a shot at Barack,
with the Liberals on the run.
So he chose a guy, Mr. Ryan,
who says he's money smart,
but any smart man who looks at his plan,
can see it'll fall apart.
Mitt shut down the heat in Tampa,
he got through old Mr. Paul,
But he's heading for disaster,
when the big day comes in the Fall.
He's always running his mouth,
every minute of every day,
and if He says or does something wrong,
he'll etch a sketch it away.
When the votes are finally counted,
and it's all but a memory,
He'll realize you can't win the prize,
if all you drink is Tea.

Today's "I wasn't being an obscene rightwinger, just a racist one" excuse comes from the great state of Wisconsin:
Cops Quiz Wisconsin Man About Profane Anti-Obama Message On His Pickup Truck
An Army veteran who painted “Obama Fuk Off” in large letters on his truck was questioned by Wisconsin cops after police dispatchers received a complaint that the profane message was inappropriate “for kids in the area.”
The anti-Obama sentiment was spotted last week on Dennis Hamm’s pickup, according to a Racine County Sheriff’s Department report. After being contacted by deputies, the 55-year-old Hamm reportedly said that he did not care about reactions to his message.
Hamm contends that he did not misspell the word "fuck" on his truck's tailgate. Instead, "Fuk," he notes, is actually an acronym for "Fundamentally Useless Kenyan."
And then there's this comedy gold:
Included among Hamm’s Facebook favorites are pages for Fox News Channel; Mitt Romney; Rep. Paul Ryan; Gov. Scott Walker; Beretta USA; and Electric Light Orchestra.

I consider the embrace of revisionist history to be a giant alarm bell. Mia Love To RNC: ‘Let Me Tell You About The America I Know’
Newcomer Mia Love, a House candidate from Utah, riled the Republican National Convention with her speech Tuesday night. Love is challenging six-term Democratic Jim Matheson — and if elected, she would be the first black Republican woman in Congress.
"Let me tell you about the America I know. My parents immigrated to this country with $10 in their pocket, and a hope that the America they had heard about really did exist," Love said. "When tough times came, they didn't look to Washington — they looked within. So the America I grew up knowing was centered in self-reliance, and filled with the possibilities of living the American dream."
And with that $10 bucks and no other assistance from anyone along the way, they made it.
Yeah, right.

Seems to me if the Democratic Party had gotten as radical as he claims and the Republican party fit his values better, he'd still run in Alabama.

Didn't just get help from government, but their businesses don't exist without the patronage of others. By saying "I built this," you basically ignore that you have no business without customers. By saying "I built this," you ignore that you had to hire people to do the work for you. And by saying "I built this," you ignore that others had to build the infrastructure that your business depends upon.
"I built this" has gotta be the best example of the selfish mentality that guides the GOP today.

Precisely. Reminds me though, my Dad briefly had his own business when I was a little kid. Finally asked him to explain more about it and what he said really illustrated Obama's point that entrepenurs and individuals don't make it on themselves alone. They make it due to consumers obviously. I mean look at McDonalds. Ray Kroc got tons of meat and vegetables from farmers to help his business out.

weenies!
Last year in Austin we had over 100 days of triple digits...most of them were consecutive days with a couple of 99s and 98s thrown in the mix.
True, but as you well know, if you took most native Texans and parked them in Colorado for the winter, two things would happen:
1) 50% of them would lose their legs to frostbite. I have never done this myself, but for as long as I've lived in Texas I've seen people in the winter cold wearing coats that looked like they were developed by NASA for Mt. Everest climbers.... with SHORTS.
2) the other 50% of them would die in car accidents. In Texas, when 3 drops of water fall from the sky, or GAWD FORBID there's a sleet storm with freezing rain, the unwritten Martial Laws of the Road kick in. This requires Texans to ignore such useless notions as "frictional coefficient" and "force equals mass times acceleration". In essence, you just climb into your Triple Cab Dodge Compensator, close your eyes, and floor it. When you fishtail all over the road, and/or hydroplane into an overpass support column, you are required to get out (if you're conscious and ambulatory) and give the finger & shout insults at every other driver, because it's THEIR FAULT.

It's nutty.
In an interview with a conservative website last year, Saucedo Mercer talked in depth about her views on immigration. A Mexican immigrant herself who became a U.S. citizen, she said the issue was important because people from places other than Mexico were among those coming across the border illegally.
“That includes Chinese, Middle Easterners,” she said. “If you know Middle Easterners, a lot of them, they look Mexican or they look, you know, like a lot of people in South America, dark skin, dark hair, brown eyes. And they mix. They mix in.
“And those people, their only goal in life is to, to cause harm to the United States. So why do we want them here, either legally or illegally? When they come across the border, besides the trash that they leave behind, the drug smuggling, the killings, the beheadings. I mean, you are seeing stuff. It’s a war out there.”

An update from my drive to and from Ikea this evening:
Both NYC news radio stations have 'live team reports' from the convention. Neither station, over the course of 5 segments I heard, even mentioned the rule change or the Paulians being kept out of the hall. The most one reporter would say was that there were Ron Paul supporters 'demonstrating outside the convention hall.'
As far as Infinity Broadcasting outlets in NYC are concerned, the rules dustup had exactly zero news value. But I did hear that Chris Christie's keynote address would be carried live at around 10:30 tonight, six times.
Media sucks.

Speaking of which, I linked one movement of said piece a while ago, but finding a good performance online is difficult.
I will stress that, given the choice of music that candidates play, especially the GOP candidates with their Americana stuff, that dead Russian composers are probably not going to be appreciated.
I think you have a point and while I was considering the Dumbarton Oaks concerto, I'll play something from the greatest American Composer instead - Edward Kennedy Ellington. Especially later material that he collaborated with William Thomas Strayhorn on... ;)

Unless they're not Muricans..
...unless they're sick or malnourished, in which cases we prescribe Bootstraps and faith healing.
Bootstraps: the pharmaceutical solution for all the troubles life visits on Other People.
Bootstraps may or may not contain 100% bullshit by volume. Bootstraps is ineffective against all illnesses except gay panic disorder and other fake pathologies used as excuses to be a dick. In clinical trials Bootstraps has been show to cause side effects such as despair, privation, and desperation in 99% of cases. There is a .01% chance that administration of Bootstraps will result in socialist leanings. In 1% of cases Bootstraps was highly effective when paired with large infuses of personal wealth, cash from parents, or a quietly-obtained government grant, but researchers do not understand the interaction that causes this result.
Bootstraps should only be taken by other people, and can be dangerously edifying when self-administered. Bootstraps is acceptable in small doses for pregnant women, but really they should have a church or husband instead. Whores without a husband should try a Pregnancy Crisis Center, where Bootstraps and Shame will be properly administered. After the whore has given up her child to be sold to proper Christian parents and treatment discontinued because whore. Children should not be administered bootstraps unless they're poor, being gay-bullied, or otherwise inconvenienced Nice Respectable People.
Minorities may experience diminished results from Bootstraps. Researchers are unsure why this is, but probably it's something cultural that could be solved with community-wide Bootstraps vaccination series. Poor minorities in Third World Countries should be administered Bootstraps by affluent First-World white folks to maximize the (non)effect.

Why not run with your new party in Alabama? Oh wait, that's because deep down he knows Alabama Republicans are just as extreme as what he claims the Democrats have become. It's going to be amusing to see him try to claim the Gerry Connolly or Jim Moran are both far left liberals when their records are within the center of the party and those two guys unlike Davis actually know the issues that matter to voters up here. I saw a profile on Haley today on NPR. She was bragging about busting the unions. Yeah because unions are such a force in South Carolina.

"He actually balanced his budget."
Yes, but cutting taxes while raising fees all over the place. Why? Because a balanced budget was required by state law!

When in doubt, return to big business's favorite boogeyman of all time, the unions. Shit unions may not be perfect but you need them in a democratic society especially when you have politicians like this who want to have policies that favor businesses over workers.

re: #418 HappyWarrior
Davis just strikes me as an opportunist. He's been claiming that the Democrats have gone too far to the left. Yet he's planning to move up to Northern Virginia and run here. The Virginia GOP really must think people up here are stupid if they think we're going to fall for that.
I'll be a bit more blunt: whether Davis ran as a Democrat or Republican, quite a few Alabamians still won't vote for anyone but a white male for governor.

Insufficient. We need to go back to the days of Pinkerton agents and private wars.

I object to this demonization of Uncle Tom. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a book with the specific objective of winning over white Christians to the cause of abolition. She succeeded. To accomplish this, she created a perfect Christian in the form of Uncle Tom, and then had a nasty cruel, non-believing Simon Legree beat him to death.
It worked. Slaves were freed. Uncle Tom was a kind, generous, and loving man, which was the point of the book.

I think it was one of the first states to do that. Unions even in the days when they were more powerful nationwide really never took foot in South Carolina. So Haley's bragging about how she's taken on the union bosses is stupid all things considered. In many southern states as I am sure you know being from Texas, the Democrats even accept right to work. It's just that the Republicans like Haley are extremely anti union to the point of an union leader having any influence drives them crazy. It happened here recently when McDonnell was upset that there was a union president on the Metro(subway) board.

That may have been the character's original intent, but that well was poisoned long ago, just as with "call a spade a spade".
