There's so much information flying in this debate that nearly all of the substance is going to be drowned out.
On this and other dem-leaning sites, everyone loves Biden and thinks he's winning. On GOP-leaning sites they are celebrating because Biden is "losing it" and are certain he's turning off independents.
It's going to come down to whether the average viewer sees the VP as commanding/confident, or loud/rude. I'm not making a prediction yet other than this...the polls asking "who won?" won't be anywhere near as lopsided as after the 1st Presidential debate.

That would still be a waste of time, really. We know these people's positions. We know the inconsistencies in their positions. Anyone who wants to be informed has, anyway. There's far too much to cover in a debate. And, as Romney proved, you can just take entirely new positions for the debate anyway.
It's always going to be theater. The only selection process it really has is for people who can perform and razzle-dazzle. If that's important for the presidency-- and it kind of is-- then it's a good test, but that's all it is.

A debate would still not be the right way to get that info. It'll be an incredibly narrow window, and people can just be saying what they want for that day.
Debates are not an effective or good way of informing the populace about positions of political parties or candidates. They are good ways of exploring political themes, like "Should we have universal health care?" but only if they're approached actually seriously as a debate, rather than campaigning.

Usually the VP debate is meaningless but I think a lot of people, most importantly the press, were a bit shocked by Mitt's win last week. A Biden loss tonight might have been interpreted as a sign that the Obama camp has lost the plot. At least now the political coverage will have some equilibrium. A Biden loss tonight might have lead to a week's worth of "WTF is wrong with Obama" coverage.

Yes, $2 trillion of extra military spending will certainly help cut the deficit.
But those allegedly prinicpled tea partiers won't care. If their guy gets in, they'll look the other way on the debt, since that was never their biggest objection anyway. It was having the other side, especially when helmed by a black guy, make any decisions about how "their" money gets spent. And the far right sees no problem in further blowing up the deficit if the reason is to increase military spending. (Only the Paultards see that as an issue, in an idiotic way that just goes to the other extreme.)

We can't.
Don't be so sure. I actually worry that my mother is voting this year. Mild to moderate dementia --scary shit.
She and my Dear Ole' Departed Dad had excellent treatment from Medicare. I have absolutely no complaints. Doctors know what they can and cannot do and get paid by Medicare. I don't feel their treatment has been compromised in any way.
But, my Dad didn't want treatment. He was content to let nature take it's course. He went thru chemo once and said he wouldn't do it again. When it came back, doctors actually wanted to do more tests etc. He said no. So, it seems Medicare would have paid for much more than he thought he wanted.
Mom is the same. People who want to be kept alive at all costs, maybe they will be disapointed. Frankly, I've been raised to think that death is the natural progression of life. If you don't have the quality of life you want and there is little chance it can return (i.e. you have cancer in 3 organs and your spine) --please give me good drugs and take away all life support.
There was an old lady in the room next to my Dad, who I guess didn't have a living will. Man, what we heard from that room made me glad my Dad was drugged out. I would never put my family thru that. I wouldn't want to be in that situation. I don't believe in heaven, but then again, I haven't lived my life in such a way that I'd worry either way.
I think I may have DNR tatooed above my heart.

Click to the 'details' link on the post, then click on "Embed This Tweet". Then copy and paste the HTML code that appears into the comment box here on LGF. It works better with Explorer than Firefox.
There's a much easier way. If you're just using the regular Twitter site, right click on the time in the top right hand corner and copy the link address, then paste it here.

In Romney we may see a man lying and contradicting his earlier positions. But maybe Romney doesn't see it as lying since he really has no fixed positions to contradict. He's nearly 180 degrees from where he was as MA Gov, so his positions over the years are always evolving. He's constantly walking back positions he just articulated. Sometimes it's the same or next day: AGW, abortion, Obamacare, etc.

Remember the Olympics Ice Skating scandal year with Nancy Kerrigan? When she lost the Gold to Uksana, her response was "I did my routine perfectly, no mistakes. SHE made mistakes."
That's how I view the GOP'ers right now. It's as if they think a better performance and adherence to protocol trumps substance.
I actually remember that. Oksana Baiul screwed up a triple salchow jump and two footed the landing. She started ad libbing extra elements into her long program to try and make up for the mistake. I am on Nancy Kerrigan's side on this one. She didn't fuck up her program. She should have taken the gold.
