The reincarnation of LGF Pages approaches
LGF • Views: 33,767

I’m coding away, getting the revamped LGF Pages indexes ready to launch, so here’s a no-frills open thread for a working Wednesday.

Oh, OK … I’ll throw in a cool time-lapse video of an amazingly empty Seattle.

In other news about the new servers, I discovered the cause of the connection errors many have reported happening every night around 11 pm Pacific time.

It's the cPanel backup script installed by default on the new server -- every night, it does an automatic "OPTIMIZE TABLES" operation in addition to backing up the data. On some of our larger tables (like the comments, for example) this can take a long, long time, and the table has to be locked while it's being optimized. This was definitely the cause of the errors.

We'll get it sorted out so it won't be a problem any more.

Wood skids might be useable, can bludgeon with them or sharpen them to use as stakes.

FREE MEN"S HAIRCUT at Upscale grooming salon (Midtown East)

I can make this work. I'll just assume that's where I'll be when the outbreak occurs. Even though a hair salon is in a very insecure building, I think most people have overlooked the benefits of broken glass as barracades in defending against the zombies. Instead of waiting for them to break through the windows, break them yourselves, and gather the glass into choke points on the stairs. Zombies won't be able to climb over the glass without slicing themselves into ribbons.

And in the salon, you have a lot of flammable materials to build into weapons. This being Manhattan, the density of zombies will be high but supplies will be all around us too. Starting location probably matters more than starting weapon.

Edit: Also, I'll look hot, and beautiful people make it to the end of the movie more often. So there.

Um, actually women do tend to feel sexier when we're ovulating. This is because Mother Nature really, really wants us to have babies.

Mother Nature doesn't care if you're in a good relationship, if you're financially stable, if you're a grown up emotionally. She wants babies. She's like that.

Woman kicks over abortion protestors signs outside planned parenthood, male protestor shoves woman. Woman goes home and comes back with father, father knocks male protestor down and punches him repeatedly in face. Father ends up with seven stab wounds, daughter with one in the hand. Police arrive during scuffle and break it up but announce that no arrests have been made or charges filed. Father goes to hospital with "serious injuries."

And that Planned Parenthood clinic does not even do abortions, it only gives referrals.

What a blockhead:

Are Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang too mean for today's kids? Good grief!

As Halloween nears, many families will gather around the old television set for the annual viewing of “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” But, one dad says it’s time to retire the classic cartoon because of its taunting messages and unkind words.

“The show is riddled with the kids calling each other stupid, dumb, and blockheads. There is continous teasing and bullying. Charlie Brown is supposed to be the hero, instead he is kicked and demeaned at every turn, even by the adults giving out candy,” Buzz Bishop, otherwise known as DadCamp, wrote at Babble.com recently.

Bishop argues that apart from a sense of nostalgia for parents, the Charlie Brown specials have nothing of value to offer today’s kids. He finds the shows’ acceptance of schoolyard teasing to be antiquated. And, as the father of young kids, he finds the constant use of words like “stupid” “dumb” and “blockhead” to be a bad message for those little ears. “Charlie Brown is always an outsider, the cool kids continue to play tricks, and nobody is ever held to account. In an era of hashtags like #RIPAmandaTodd, these types of attitudes are no longer appropriate,” Bishop wrote.

You'll find no one who hates bullying more than I but this is stupid. You want to limit bullying? Teach kids from a young age that it's not ever acceptable to pick on someone because they're different.

re: #86 HappyWarrior

Actually, I think it is hard for them, because they don't really believe it. Or at least, they believe that a significant proportion of rapes are actually instances of women making unreasonable accusations after the fact.

I think Peanuts are the least of our worries in relationship to bullies.

I'd suggest everyone watch the documentary film"Bully",most of the adults in the schools in this film are total freaking morons, willfully not bothering to see what's happening and making all kinds of excuses. Fix that shit, then maybe I'll worry about cartoons.

The Montessori kids seem to think before they act more consistently. The difference get's noticed by strangers even.

GOP Rep Says Strike On Iran’s Nuclear Facilities Would Not Be An Act Of War

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-MI), chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said on CNN last night that neither he, nor the Iranians, would consider an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities an act of war.

Rogers said that he believed there are options “short of war” that could prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and, strangely, CNN host Erin Burnett wondered if bombing suspected nuclear weapons facilities would be an option that is “short of war.” While Rogers at first appeared taken aback by Burnett’s odd question, he then went a bit further, saying definitively that such an attack would indeed be “short of war” and the Iranians would see it that way too.

What the fuck, GOP?

Takes a special amount of delusion to think that the Iranians or even their allies wouldn't have some reaction to that. So sick of the Republican Party and their elected officials having a childish mindset when it comes to war and peace. You want with Iran, fine but man up and admit that it won't be a walk in the park. Sheesh, you'd think we'd learn something after Iraq but nope. Instead we have the House Chairman of the Intelligence committee claiming that Iran would take being attacked as not being an act of war.

I also think telling kids that bullies are really cowards who will back down if anyone stands up to them is stupid as fuck. Many bullies are bullies because violence is normal to them, they get knocked around at home by their dads or moms, and they're not going to be at all scared by some kid 'standing up to them'. Moreover, they often just have three or four guys jumping one kid, so it really doesn't matter.

I never had much problem with bullies. I think cause I'm an only child I just never understood childhood interpersonal behavior and therefore never bought into it.

The best way (in my opinion). Work out with your kid whether it makes sense for you to intervene or not (usually the kid won't want you to if it is just verbal). If not, game out some responses. Bullies tend to say the same things over and over, so you kind of know what is coming. And your kid know you are on their side and don't think less of them for being picked on.

I also have information on what the Misratans and their friends are going to do to the small city.

The Colonel said that the Army met little resistance and said that they are shelling the city. A local said that the Army is entering the city with bulldozers demolishing houses

So they seem to want to go with the Carthage Option.

My youngest son is on the autism spectrum (PDD-NOS) and got picked on a lot growing up. Gaming out responses was the best thing we ever figured out. He gained a lot of confidence by having a snappy comeback ready, and by his Junior year in high school he was making a lot of friends. I only had to make one trip to the principal's office to intervene while he was in high school.

I certainly wasn't an angel either. I should clarify. I still feel guilty about how I treated this one girl. Even more so knowing later that she too had Asperger's. I think when I was younger even though I had no official diagnosis of Asperger's, I so wanted desperately to be "normal" and fit in. To some degree, that's still true today but I feel more comfortable with myself than I did in the past. No longer the shy and nervous boy. Still on the shy side but I've grown more outgoing and confident especially since I turned 18 and later 21. May sound tacky but being able to go to bars helped for me but I'm a big time social drinker too.

He's not homeschooled because I fear he will be bullied. Nope. I hope to have him civilized by high school, when he will be going into school.

Afternoon Lizardim. It's been a hectic couple of weeks in the wild north country, and there is the looming specter of snow for those of us in the Twin Cities area. Forecasts vary, but the likelihood is far from remote. This fish has a new ride to work, courtesy of my previous daily driver dropping an axle in a very un-fixable manner. How are things among the Lizardim?

He's not homeschool because he will be bullied?

One of my reasons for homeschooling him (only one) is because I fear he will bully others. He's big, and in the past he has been really obtuse about how his behavior impacts others.

He's getting more mature, obviously, which is the point. The point of being right there (he's in three classes with other kids and I teach two of them) is so that I can see what he's doing and help him see how it impacts others.

"When you do/say this, it makes this person feel this way."

Actually, I think we're past the worst of the danger but still, I don't believe in middle school.

True confession: My son is big, strong, and clueless about how he impacts people. When he gets bored, his fallback is to pick on younger siblings.

He's not homeschooled because I fear he will be bullied. Nope. I hope to have him civilized by high school, when he will be going into school.

Did you know that studies have shown that in the long-term spectrum, bullies tend to be as negatively impacted as their victims? They never develop good interpersonal skills.

On growing up with bullies... I'm over 50, and to this day there is one then-young man I cannot recall without a combination of rage and fear.

Two years of harassment from a young man from a wealthy family, the eldest son, met daily by both parents. The harassment was verbal and physical. The few times he was caught, his punishment amounted to being turned over to his family - who would frequently then purchase something for him that he would be flaunting the next day.

It's true that many bullies are the victims of poor circumstances at home. Though they form the bulk, however, there is another group that causes me even greater concern. Those are the sociopaths. The ones who do it solely because it's fun, for the joy of proving they're smarter and better than everyone else.

As you can tell, I believe today that most of these are at least in part developed because that's how they're taught. Regardless of the wrong, they are defended by their parents and families - told, in word and deed, that they were correct to do what they did.

In mere size and strength it was a terrible creature which was lying stretched before us. It was not a pure bloodhound and it was not a pure mastiff; but it appeared to be a combination of the two--gaunt, savage, and as large as a small lioness. Even now in the stillness of death, the huge jaws seemed to be dripping with a bluish flame and the small, deep-set, cruel eyes were ringed with fire. About five years ago I had a bored, lazy doctor tell me my blood pressure was 150/100. I was an out-of-shape smoker and believed her. Got it redone a few months later-- 122/80. Not perfect, but obviously not in 'you gonna die' territory.

The funny part was she didn't even give me any advice about what would have been alarmingly dangerous blood pressure. She didn't even mention it. It was just on my report when I got home.

I am happy to say that the Republican Party Platform adopted at the Convention in August took a strong stand against ratification of those hurtful treaties. Here are the UN treaties specifically listed as having a harmful impact on American interests and even on the American family.

There have also been various cyber attacks, etc. Not all attacks are going to lead to all out war. There will probably be more attacks in the future too.

The common denominator between all the attacks you cite is that they're deniable, leaving no real trace of the actual perpetrator. Hard to pull that off with an overt airstrike targeting all their nuclear facilities at once.

I don't know how to embed tweets on an iPhone. This'll have to do.

What you need to do is get the URL for the individual tweet's page.

In iPhone Safari, tap once on the tweet to open it in its own page, then tap and hold on the tweet's timestamp. A menu pops up showing the URL, with an option to Copy it. Do that, then paste it into an LGF comment box.

In the Twitter app, there's a '...' button that has an option to copy the tweet's URL.

Your ancestry is... complex:

Extremely Rare Interbreeding Events Can Explain Neanderthal DNA in Living Humans

Considering the recent experimental discovery of Green et al that present-day non-Africans have 1 to 4% of their nuclear DNA of Neanderthal origin, we propose here a model which is able to quantify the genetic interbreeding between two subpopulations with equal fitness, living in the same geographic region. The model consists of a solvable system of deterministic ordinary differential equations containing as a stochastic ingredient a realization of the neutral Wright-Fisher process. By simulating the stochastic part of the model we are able to apply it to the interbreeding ofthe African ancestors of Eurasians and Middle Eastern Neanderthal subpopulations and estimate the only parameter of the model, which is the number of individuals per generation exchanged between subpopulations. Our results indicate that the amount of Neanderthal DNA in living non-Africans can be explained with maximum probability by the exchange of a single pair of individuals between the subpopulations at each 77 generations, but larger exchange frequencies are also allowed with sizeable probability. The results are compatible with a long coexistence time of 130,000 years, a total interbreeding population of order 104 individuals, and with all living humans being descendants of Africans both for mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome.

[...]

That last line means that if you follow your family tree back on either the purely maternal line or purely paternal line you won't run into a Neanderthal.

However, all those other ancestors in your tree (assuming you don't have ancestry completely from those living south of the Sahara) have, here or there - and the paper indicates roughly every 77 generations as most probable - a Neanderthal showing up.

The guy who tried to shoot up the Family Research Council's HQ in August has been charged with terrorism:

A grand jury charged suspect Floyd Corkins II, 28, with seven District of Columbia offenses in the August 15 shooting at the Family Research Council, the U.S. Attorney's office said in a statement.

Corkins, of Herndon, Virginia, is the first person charged under a local 2002 anti-terrorism law, the statement said.

A former volunteer at a Washington gay and lesbian community center, Corkins is alleged to have shot a guard at the Family Research Council, which lobbies against same-sex marriage.

He told the guard, "I don't like your politics" before pulling a pistol from a backpack and opening fire, according to court documents.

The new charges include committing an act of terrorism while armed, attempted murder while armed, aggravated assault while armed, and weapons charges.

I think guys like McCain and Mitt could be fine presidents. Their real problem is the nutty core of the party. Even issues like "Fiscal Responsibility", which could be big winning issues for Republicans, gets bogged down in social conservatism, impossibly unsustainable tax policies and general bullshit. Dems have managed to keep a core of decent proposals on issues like healthcare reform alive for quite some time. It gives the party something to work towards. What do the Republicans have? outlawing abortion and prayer in schools? The core they've been clinging to died a long time ago and they're left rudderless. Decent guys like McCain and Mitt are saddled with an impossibly stupid agenda.

Occupy Wall Street leads church to cancel Halloween party

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A historic Manhattan church has canceled its annual Halloween celebration due to an ongoing standoff with remnants of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Trinity Church, an Episcopalian congregation located where Wall Street meets Broadway, usually invites neighborhood children to watch classic silent films such as "Frankenstein" and "Dracula."

The church is breaking the tradition this year due to Occupy protesters and the homeless camping on the sidewalk outside, the latest casualty in an ongoing standoff.

After being evicted from a park near Wall Street last year, Occupy Wall Street activists sought permission to set up a camp on a vacant lot owned by the church.

Trinity had been an early ally of the movement, distributing blankets to protesters and opening its doors for the group's strategy meetings.

When the church denied the group's request, the relationship soured. Activists "took control" of the lot, protester Jack Boyle said. One activist opened a fence with bolt cutters and dozens of people poured in, resulting in arrests.

In response, a group of Occupy activists camped out in front of the church and vowed to stay until one of the men arrested was freed.

Neither one of them strike me as men who would stand up to the rabid nonsense in their party.

A minor difference. I think McCain might want to stand up to them but would be overrun. Mitt, I believe, agrees with them. Pay attention to what he says behind closed doors when exposed. For that matter, look hard at his open statements. Red Meat for the right is blunt. Moderate Mince for the center is vague and riddled with qualifiers.

Coming soon to a womb near you - Human 2.0:

Scientists create embryos with genes from 2 women, 1 man

Scientists in Oregon have created embryos with genes from one man and two women, using a provocative technique that could someday be used to prevent babies from inheriting certain rare incurable diseases.

The researchers at Oregon Health & Sciences University said they are not using the embryos to produce children, and it is not clear when or even if this technique will be put to use. But it has already stirred a debate over its risks and ethics in Britain, where scientists did similar work a few years ago.

The British experiments, reported in 2008, led to headlines about the possibility someday of babies with three parents. But that's an overstatement. The DNA from the second woman amounts to less than 1 percent of the embryo's genes, and it isn't the sort that makes a child look like Mom or Dad. The procedure is simply a way of replacing some defective genes that sabotage the normal workings of cells.

The British government is asking for public comment on the technology before it decides whether to allow its use in the future. One concern it cites is whether such DNA alteration could be an early step down a slippery slope toward "designer babies" — ordering up, say, a petite, blue-eyed girl or tall, dark-haired boy.

The law does not reflect that fact, however. It was not written with such technologies in mind and will not be able to keep pace with them, due to other matters holding priority for state legislatures, partisan clashes, and just plain fear of change in so fundamental a matter as parenthood.

Shamefully, one of the sponsors of this misogynistic bill is a Democrat.

Despite the fact that low-income women who give birth to children would logically need increased assistance to care for their larger family, Pennsylvania lawmakers — State Reps. RoseMarie Swanger (R), Tom Caltagirone (D), Mark Gillen (R), Keith Gillespie (R), Adam Harris (R), and Mike Tobash (R) — don’t want their state’s welfare program to provide additional benefits for that newborn. If a woman gives birth to a child who was conceived from rape, she may seek an exception to this rule so that her welfare benefits aren’t slashed, but only if she can provide proof that she reported her sexual assault and her abuser’s identity to the police:

Did a little research on Mr. Caltagirone; his district lies in Berks County, which, from what I can tell, tends to run heavily Republican in elections (even though there's more registered Democrats).

Why am I not surprised?

More voter intimidation and fraud in Florida...

People in 28 counties are getting fake letters supposedly from elections supervisors telling them that they are not eligible to vote due to concerns about their citizenship. The letters even have the names and contact info for the elections supervisors correct and look like official state mailings.

The FBI, Postal Service agents, and the Florida Secretary of State's office are trying to find out who is responsible...my guess would be...not democrats!

re: #411 Dark_Falcon

I say let's wait and find out. This is clear fraud and so would have a very high risk factor for the persons doing it.

re: #412 Decatur Deb

Seems many were addressed to Republicans. Because some letters asked for SSAN and other information, it might all be about extortion of ID for profit, using the vote as a hostage.

re: #417 dragonfire1981

Hmmm...

We're talking Florida here and, since the Tampa FBI office is involved here, a part of central (and perhaps some of south) Florida at that.

Here's a theory: I bet that whoever is doing this was targeting Cuban-Americans/Hispanics, seeing as Florida has a large Cuban diaspora (Cuban-Americans, IIRC, tend to go GOP, while other Hispanics lean more towards the Dems).

So the perdify of the Democrats continues onward; watch for them to use this as an excuse to get the courts to overthrow the Fla ballots.

These people are not intelligent enough to realize that this will motivate more conservatives to come out and vote than would have otherwise. Keep it up, you tards. You are poking a bear with a stick. You are about to lose a limb.

Expect the left to use any and all tactics to screw with the voting process. Be on the lookout.

FBI? Really FBI? Do you really think this government agency is trust worthy as they sit and watch this terroist in the White House destroy our country? The FBI guys are full fledged traitors!!!!!!!!

I'm a bit freaked out by the ads in Maricopa AZ that only in Spanish give the wrong date to vote.

Shit like that can't happen by accident, especially in Arpaio country. It's simply impossible for a county's official voter registration card to innocently get the date wrong in the Spanish translation. That was absolutely deliberate.

As Foodborne Illnesses Skyrocket, GOP Slashes Funds For Food Safety

Even though President Obama signed into law the Food Safety Modernization Act — giving the Food and Drug Administration wider power to stop foodborne illness outbreaks before they start — the number of Americans who become sick or die because of contaminated food has increased 44 percent over the last two years, according to a new report from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

This adds up to about 48 million people getting sick. But Republicans have threatened to defund the law that helps curb salmonella outbreaks. Meanwhile, the FDA remains unable to implement the reforms because of underfunding:

But while some parts of the law have been enacted, the vast majority of the law’s regulatory framework remains in limbo, sitting in the White House Office of Management and Budget, with no clear timetable for implementation.

“In February, the president’s budget requested $4.5 billion for the Food and Drug Administration. But budget proposals in both the Senate and the House fall below this target, coming in $600 (million)-$700 million below full funding, which the Office of Management and Budget has called ‘harmful’ to food safety regulations,” the Public Interest Research Group says. [...]

Instead of improving, the problem of foodborne outbreaks is getting worse, the report says.

“When comparing 2010 infection incidences with national health objective targets … the only incidence rate that meets the target goal was the incidence of infection with E. coli O157,” the report says. “The incidence of salmonella was three times the 2010 national health objective target, which is especially alarming, as salmonella causes the majority of hospitalizations and deaths from foodborne disease.”

Stabbing Results From Anti-Abortion Harassment Outside Of Planned Parenthood Clinic That Doesn’t Perform Abortions

Yesterday, a 22-year-old woman kicked an anti-abortion protester’s sign as she made her way into an Oregon-area Planned Parenthood clinic, and the protester pushed her in response. The woman returned with her father, who instigated a physical confrontation with the protester — later identified as 54-year-old Christopher R. Tolhurst — which resulted in Tolhurst repeatedly stabbing the man. The Oregonian reports that he remains in the hospital recovering from seven stab wounds to the abdomen.

A spokesperson for Planned Parenthood for Southwestern Oregon explained to the Associated Press that the clinic that inspired the violent confrontation only provides health services, such as contraception and cancer screenings, and doesn’t perform any abortion services. Nevertheless, residents of the neighborhood confirmed that Tolhurst regularly harasses the clients who visit the health clinic:

Yup. If someone wants to discourage you from voting, they don't need to ask you to open a correspondence w/ sensitive info.

But they aren't asking for correspondence back, none of the articles I have read claim that. They say you have 15 days to show documentation at the elections office or be removed from the polls...

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Travis Horn says he hasn't missed a vote in 18 years. He's been active in Bay Area politics and has a law degree. But a phony letter that claimed he can't vote still threw him for a loop.

"I'd like to think I'm a sophisticated voter, but this is a really sophisticated -- most intricate I've seen," he said, holding the letter. "They went to trouble to really lay this out well."

Somebody is trying to scare a lot of lawfully registered voters from casting a ballot using letters that claim to come from the supervisor of elections office.

The letters claim the recipients are suspected foreigners who must submit original documents to prove their citizenship or they will be purged from the voter rolls.

"And it says if you turn out to vote, here are the penalties, and it lays it out for you," Horn continued. "Pretty disturbing."

The letters were sent from Seattle and are now landing in mailboxes across Florida, and apparently only Florida.

One went to the city council president in Jacksonville. Another went to Lenny Curry, the chairman of the state Republican Party.

Construction manager John Deangeles got the same letter at his home in Naples. He fears it could intimidate seniors and others who may not sniff out the ruse.

"Maybe on the fence to vote one way or other, and they say they're not going to mess with it, not going to risk it," he said.

At first, it appeared as if the letters were only going to Republican voters like Travis Horn. But the Pinellas County Elections Office told us they're going out to Democrats as well.

Of eight voters who say they got this letter in Pinellas, four are Republicans, three are Democrats. One is non-partisan.

"Potentially from the federal side we're looking at either civil rights violations or we're looking at voter fraud," said Dave Couvertier with the FBI Tampa Office.

The letter also warns recipients they could be purged from the voter rolls if they don't respond within 15 days."

'Benghazi attack suspect' dies in Cairo shootout

A man suspected of involvement in an attack on the US consulate in the Libyan city of Benghazi last month has been killed in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, officials say.

According to the Egyptian officials the suspect was cornered in a flat in Madinet Nasr early on Wednesday morning. He threw a bomb at the security forces, but it bounced back into the flat.

An exchange of fire with the security services then began and went on for several hours, local media reports say.

The suspect's burnt body was found in the property, along with weapons and explosive materials, officials say.

One possibility is that the suspect was trying to make his way to the Sinai peninsula, which has become a magnet for militants from across the region, the BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo reports.

Obama lampoons Trump over conspiracy reboot

US president Barack Obama has lampooned Donald Trump, saying the real estate tycoon's feud with him dated back to "when we were growing up together in Kenya".

Mr Obama ribbed the flamboyant mogul during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, after Mr Trump revived the right-wing conspiracy theory that alleges the president was not born in the United States.

"This all dates back to when we were growing up together in Kenya," Mr Obama joked, after dashing to California to record the show as part of a 40-hour campaign sweep through eight states.

"We had constant run-ins on the soccer field, he wasn't very good and resented it," said Mr Obama, who was born in Hawaii the son of a white American mother and Kenyan father.

"When we finally moved to America, I thought it would be over," the president said, with a beaming grin, and admitted he had never actually met Mr Trump.
