Israel Authorizes Call-Up of 75,000 Reservists for Possible Gaza Incursion

Ground war imminent
Middle East • Views: 36,935

It’s looking very likely this evening that Israel will launch a ground operation in Gaza, as Defense Minister Ehud Barak has authorized calling up to 75,000 reservists.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak approved the IDF’s request on Friday evening to increase the maximum number of reservists it could enlist, seeking cabinet approval to mobilize up to 75,000 troops ahead of a possible Gaza ground operation.

The Inner Cabinet, a group of nine senior ministers, met for over three hours to discuss the possibility of a ground operation into the Hamas-controlled enclave, but released no statements or indications as to what transpired during the meeting.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman, however, told Channel 10 that toppling Hamas is not on the agenda as a goal for Operation Pillar of Defense.

No, this is a new extension - they've more than doubled the number of reservists they're allowed to call up.

My bad. You are correct. The report I was alluding to was for the initial call up of the Reserves. Still, this is going to get ugly and get ugly fast.

1) Fuck. I hate this. Strong supporter of Israel, but I know that whatever happens Israel will get blamed.

2) Where the hell is Hamas getting all this rockets? If they would just spend the money on food and medicine.

3) At the very least the thousands of rockets justify the blockade.

So, just their artillary?

I read the spookiest thing today that a reader sent in to Andrew Sullivan. Grain of salt of course, but this blew me away.

To start with, we can assume that the goal of Pillar of Defense is not to cripple Hamas’s war-making ability through military means.

The writer goes on from there to the history of Algeria, 1955, the FLN and what the decided to do in order to gain popular support.

2) Where the hell is Hamas getting all this rockets?

Some of the small ones are made in Gaza, others possibly from Iran:

Hamas, meanwhile, warned it would strike deeper inside Israel with Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets, acknowledging for the first time it has such longer-range weapons capable of hitting targets some 47 miles (75 kilometers) away. Tel Aviv is 40 miles (70 kilometers) from Gaza. [Link: news.yahoo.com...]

It does look like a ground invasion is likely. It's also likely to accomplish very little aside from a temporary setback and modest reduction in terrorist stockpiles. Military defeat of the terrorists in Gaza just isn't possible. I wish the Israelis all the luck in the world in killing and capturing as many terrorists as possible but defeating them just isn't possible. They'll have to do this again in a few years.

I know, I agree, but at this point Israel's military strategy hasn't made any progress towards a long-term solution. They've already pissed off a good deal of folk who aren't in their corner, and are unlikely to win them back anytime soon. Another incursion like Operation Cast Lead will, like you said, maybe gain some temporary security, but in a few years it'll be right back to where they started.

I'm just surprised something more drastic hasn't been done, either militarily or diplomatically. It's become Einstein's definition of insanity to the point where it seems like there's more incentive to keep this going than fix it one way or another.

It's a lose-lose at this point for pretty much everybody except those in Hamas looking to turn this into a full-scale conflict. Israel marches in, the people of Gaza suffer for it, and Hamas uses it as their next recruitment tool.

Just don't know.

Businessman: Jill Kelley Asked for $80M, Bragged of Petraeus Connection

A New York businessman who discussed a multi-billion-dollar Korean business deal with Jill Kelley said the Tampa woman at the center of the Petraeus scandal told him Gen. Petraeus had arranged for her to become an honorary consul for South Korea and promote free trade, and then asked him for $80 million to complete the deal.

"Ms. Kelley made it clear to me that General Petraeus put her in this position, and that's why she was able to have access to such senior levels [of the Korean government]," said Adam Victor, president and CEO of TransGas Development Systems, "that they were essentially doing a favor for General Petraeus, and that she had access solely because of her relationship with General Petraeus."

Victor, who met Kelley at the Republican National Convention in Tampa in August, said he was disappointed in Gen. Petraeus for helping Kelley become an honorary consul. "Frankly, I blame Gen. Petraeus for this as a lapse of judgment," he said. "The general should have known better."

No, sir. This started because Israel was getting hit by scores of rockets per day. Being under artillery siege is incredibly demoralizing for one, and the rockets were hurting and killing Israeli civilians. Hamas could not or would not stop the rocket launches, so their military commander was killed in the opening gambit. It was a classic decapitation strike.

The problem, Hoops, is that gaining a surrender in Gaza would ultimately require scorched earth tactics, and most likely atrocities. The will people of the Gaza would have to be broken is order to force a surrender, and the things Israel would have to do to achieve such a breaking would change Israel into something Israel does not wish to become.

The people of Gaza can break, and it won't matter. They're not in control of the Strip. Hamas is.

Actually there were a few hundred rockets launched into Israel over the last few weeks. Either launched by Hamas or permitted by Hamas. Israel answered with a few attacks against the launchers and worked with Egypt to effect a ceasefire. The fire did not stop and then for three days they said if it did not stop they would start targeting Hamas leadership. Three days later, and 10's if not hundreds more rockets launched at Israeli cities, the leader of the military branch of Hamas and everyone in his car were killed. I am not sure that this was a choice, and the hornets had plenty of warning to back off.

except that what you are saying is not at all accurate. Even if one assumes that occasional rocket launching from Gaza into Israel is an acceptable status quo (it isn't) it was clearly a massive escalation in rockets on November 11 which forced Israel's response. So by your definition of "round of violence" it would appear that Hamas is the one kicking the hornets nest.

Again check your timelines. November 11. One hundred Palestinian rockets. The assassination followed it. The escalation was on the Palestinian side. Furthermore, the fact that Israel suffers through this insanity for months without a serious response does not in any way not give them a right to retaliate a time of their choosing.

re: #171 Petero1818

Again check your timelines. November 11. One hundred Palestinian rockets. The assassination followed it. The escalation was on the Palestinian side. Furthermore, the fact that Israel suffers through this insanity for months without a serious response does not in any way not give them a right to retaliate a time of their choosing.

Quoted For Truth.

The thing that kind of limits Iron Dome's long term usefulness is that even when it works every rocket shot down still represents a loss for Israel in terms of a financial war of attrition. It looks cool, is technologically badass and prevents casualties but was also only every going to be a temporary stopgap measure. In some ways it's actually counterproductive for the user since it conveys a (false) sense of near invulnerability on Israel and again raises the disproportionate capabilities of the two sides to the foreground.

It could be reinforced by adding Centurion systems for backup (essentially land-based Phalanx radar-directed 20mm Gatling guns). The Israeli navy already uses Phalanx, so perhaps we should offer to ship in Centurions in a hurry.

Nahh

Sitting around one day, they said ,,"hey ,,, we're coming up to the end of the year. We have to get rid of these extra rockets before they expire!!!"

"If we don't use our full rocket budget this year, they'll cut it next year."

Since the option is to do what they did before Iron Dome, and allow people to die in the streets of Sderot, I think they're going to take that chance.

The problem is that Sderot is too close to Gaza for Iron Dome to defend it. You'd need Centurion if you were going to use active defenses there.

Wow. And I thought this was progressive leaning website where people would be advocating for peace and prayers for the victims on both sides. Instead it's continuing of the blame game with a slight glimpse into history. We can dispute figures and starting points all we want, but this road will not lead to solidarity or peace. Militants on both sides are at fault with the US and Middle East having plenty of blood on their hands as well, and using violence only begets more violence. I understand that a country and its people have the right to defend themselves, and it seems their could be a less sloppy way of doing with fewer casualties in an already war-stricken country. The events will be discussed in history classes for decades, so shouldn't we have a discussion of how we can abandon violence and terrorism while fighting for tolerance and compromise. As liberated Libyans did to militants in their country, citizens must tell terrorists that violence gets us nowhere, and we must go further to tell our governments and leaders that this gets us nowhere.

I think what surprises me most is the left showed plenty antipathy with the increase of drone strikes by the Obama administration that killed innocent bystanders. Now a situation with a lot of grey area mixed with history that spans thousands of years makes people shrug and 'say that's what you get.' Hard to see what you guys really stand for.

It is mishmash of many thoughts mostly a recognition that Palistinians, through Hamas have done nothin to grow their land or better the future for their children. Israel has offered to help but Hamas does not even acknowledge their existence. How can the make their society better if all they do try to destroy Israel with weapons systems brought to you by the enlightened states of Iran,Sudan, and who knows 'who else'. I like it. Security would have to be top notch - similar if not identical to what our President gets.

What do you actually mean by 'advocating for peace'? What would that look like?

re: #24 BenghaziHoops

I always thought a 2 state solution would be an advantage for Israel.
They could legally declare war and fight until a surrender is reached and nobody could do a damn thing about it.
Just my simple view

No. According to international law one country cannot invade or attack another without the express sanction of the U.N. Security Council.

Which is why I think Hamas and some Israelis oppose a two state solution. As long as Gaza and the West Bank remain outside the law anything is allowed by either side.

As I've said before, there will never be peace in the Middle East because too many people on all sides of the conflict do not want peace. They want victory.

Re: The Hostess/Twinkies shutdown

It seems to a lot of executives and shareholders are like locusts. They gain control of a company, bleed whatever they can out of it at the expense of the lower level workers, vendors and customers, then, once the company is dead, they abandon the carcass and move on to new prey, not giving a rat's ass about the damage left in their wake.

Is this the true face of Capitalism?

Essentially, yes.

The problem is that capitalism is an economic system, not an ethical one. But it has been raised to an ethical system by many people. The definition of 'good' in this system is answering "Yes" to the question, "Are you making money?"

Since the answer is "Yes" in the cases you mention this sort of action is 'good'. The health and wealth of the company or its employees is not something to be considered.

re: #161 BishopX

According to IDF figures Gazan militants have fired just under 1,200 rockets this year. They've fired 390 odd rockets since 11/14. They didn't wake up one morning and say 'hey, lets ramp up our rocket campaign by an order of magnitude'. Israel moved from counter battery fire to a targeting Hamas officals, Hamas responded. We don't devote this much attention to Gaza when there is a normal volume of fire (although that's a failry twisted concept).

Is Israel better off targeting rank-and-file manning the launchers, or those who are ordering them out, diverting Gaza's limited resources into getting military weapons instead of food and building infrastructure, and hiding their attacks amidst civilians?

Oh yeah Israel has offered so much help to the Gaza Strip, the Palestinians are so disrespectful that they don't show more gratitude to a country that is viewed by the UN as occupying their land and blockading food, medical supplies and exports. And you're right, it's mostly been comments about how Hamas militants don't like Israel and don't want to recognize as a state, even though it's recognized by the UN and the whole world while Palestine is struggling to gain that right. Hamas is a terrorist organization along with the US and trigger ready Israel. By the numbers and amount of artillery, Israel is Goliath and Hamas is David, but since the giant is 'all alone in the middle of a bunch of bullies' they get all the sympathy and support cause they get the news coverage. A majority of the people in Israel support a two-state resolution and an end to the war, specifically an end to Israel's macho defense and blockades.

And you're wrong. You and the commenters are not progressive at all, you're fallacious blowhards living in privileged America that rarely have to deal with air strikes or shortage of food wanting to stick their nose in a complicated conflict and say 'they deserve it'. Typical Dems, just not that far from the douchebag GOP.

Sure, I really want the fucking UN on the Temple Mount, (that would, I assume, be in what is now the al-Aqsa Mosque, BTW?) and for once, I think that Muslims worldwide stand shoulder to shoulder with me on this one.

The Knights Templar did that, as an irrelevant historical note. Used the mosque as their institutional headquarters.

Why does anyone imagine that the UN's presence in Jerusalem is going to make anything better? Israel believes, on a lot of evidence, that the UN has allowed hatred of their state to hijack its agenda for generations, for one thing.

That comment was really addressed to any that believe themselves progressive who are only “progressively keen on keeping Israel safe and secure” but couldn’t give a crap for any other innocent bystander or victim of war. If you’re not part of that group, then the comment doesn’t really pertain to you does it? Unless you’re that much of an aegis. Even if some commenters don’t live in privileged America, there was nothing that really emanated that they were from Gaza or any war-torn impoverished country. If they were, I’m almost positive they would have a different perspective than the majority I’ve seen.

Moving on, I gave a plethora of my views that wasn’t welcomed but only responded with “Israel is trying to be nice and it’s the Middle East’s fault” and other regurgitated talking points. Again, offered more perspective, but instead let us focus on the last part where I question the progressive values and say your information is misleading to just cry “Stop grouping us all together!” What a great worthy discussion!

To be clear I stand for the rights of all citizens and working towards a resolution that recognizes borders and needs of both countries. I wish for as few deaths as possible on both sides. Just to be clear, I stand for peace, truth and justice. Except justice isn't necessarily blind in this situation and the truth is far from seeing light.
