Another Thread for Boston Bombing Updates

US News • Views: 24,985

The previous three comment threads have filled up very quickly, so here’s another one to keep up on the news from Boston, in a terrorist attack aimed at one of America’s most popular public sporting events.

UPDATE at 4/15/13 6:19:16 pm

New video from the Associated Press:

Ryan Hoyme captured video of the 2nd blast that struck the Boston Marathon. It was about 100 yards away from the 1st and nearly simultaneous. (April 15)

Maddow looks shaken and angry over the RW’s roasting Obama over use or non-use of the word ‘terrorism.’

It was a sidebar item on CNN’s home page as of an hour or so ago. I shook my head.

Chris Hayes had the unfortunate draw of bringing in Chuck Todd who started his report with the Obama statement missing the word ‘terrorism’ and basically gentle-steered Todd into acknowledging that was a non-issue.

re: #2 makeitstop

And rightly so.

“Terrorism” is now a hot-button word, a pavlovian programming of a certain segment of American society giving a four syllable word hidden meaning.

40 years ago… bombings would bring up “SLA” or “IRA” or some other anti-societal group bent on demonstrating violence in one way or another. Today the automatic guilty party in the minds of many Americas is “Muslim” regardless of any evidence.

Will the Fox News crowd ever use the word “terrorism” to describe what crazed gunmen do when they brandish Bushmen weaponry? No, even though the very purpose of guns designed to kill many people very quickly is indeed to instill “terror”.

Home now watching the video. It’s refreshing to see a professional photographer with three cameras slung over his shoulders helping move debris right after the explosion instead of simply trying to get the best shot for publication. Hats off to him.

That’s the true American way. Terrorists can’t kill that.

When I read the story in the news early today of the whacko in California whose homemade bomb making plot went awry and blew him up I thought thank god for work accidents. then this. Just horrible, I hope all the wounded make a full recovery.

Of course its an act of terrorism. And I hope the authorities find the people who were responsible as well as all the others who supported them from the shadows. They all have a day of reckoning in their future.

In other news:

New Mexico State Police dispatch explosive team to Deming

New Mexico State Police report that there is a situation in Deming that has required them to disptatch their explosive response team.

On-and-off ramps are closed on I-10 at Mile Marker 85.

Deming Police are the lead agency, but they’ve not made a supervisor available to answer ABC-7’s questions.

ABC-7 has been told the investigation is centered on a motel in East Deming.

ABC-7 called the motel and there was no answer.

More words here, but no additional info, except that a Customs and Border Patrol helicopter is flying around.

But while I was looking for more info, I found this from three weeks ago:

Police: Choking driver caused NM Walmart explosion in Deming

Posted at: 03/22/2013 9:00 AM
By: The Associated Press

DEMING, N.M. (AP) - Police say man who choked on his food while driving caused a chain reaction that led to a fireball exploding over a Walmart in southwestern New Mexico.

The Deming Headlight reports 61-year-old Robert Sheppard told police he was eating as he drove Saturday in front of the Walmart Superstore in Deming and that he began to choke, causing him to lose control of his pickup truck.

According to police, the pickup, traveling at a “high rate of speed,” struck a propane tank attached to a grill.

Witnesses reported seeing a massive fireball that extended over the roof of the store. Police say three people were injured in the crash.

So it could be anything at that motel now….

59 freetoken  Mon, Apr 15, 2013 6:56:29pm

There was an Islamic extremist attack today… in Somalia. I posted a link this morning in the dead thread. In this case it was militant extremists killing other muslims simply because Al Shabaab doesn’t want to submit to a real government. How many people died in Somalia isn’t clear, but the count could be as high as 35. The operative word in this case isn’t “muslim” but “militant”, and the lust for power by gang leaders is at the root of the problem.

However, most Americans will never hear the news about Somalia.

But various mongering media outlets in the US, like the NY Post, will do anything to play on the deaths of two people in Boston to sell, sell, sell. And the best way to sell is to reinforce the buyers’ own beliefs about themselves. In the case of the Murdoch-media it’s about old, mostly white, overtly religious Americans being victims of elitist non-white people in power.

I mentioned this on the last thread:

“All of the injuries I have seen were from blast/overpressure. No nails, or nuts and bolts. Best guess? Dynamite and cell phone cores with a simple capacitor-actuated detonator. Kid stuff (unfortunately) in this internet world, if you can get the materials.”

and:

“Premature, I think, to report that. With all of the people fleeing the area, a lot of backpacks were left behind. I would presume that anything that alerted a nitrate dog would be destroyed by a controlled detonation rather than being opened. I would. And there are a lot of substances that can alert a nitrate dog. Like a deck of paper playing cards:

Mass General surgeon: “We’re seeing a lot of shrapnel injuries.”

Anything is shrapnel in a TNT explosion, especially close to the source. TNT has an expansion rate of between 1800 and 6500 meters per second (+ /-), which means that a plastic trash can rip the shit out of people nearby.

If there were two or three sticks of dynamite in each device and they were loaded up with nails, and/or nuts and bolts, I guarantee you we would be talking about a much higher fatality count. This is a sideline of what I do for a living. I’m amazed that so *few* were killed.

Anything is shrapnel in a TNT explosion, especially close to the source. TNT has an expansion rate of between 1800 and 6500 meters per second ( /-), which means that a plastic trash can rip the shit out of people nearby.

Very doubtful that this was a high order detonation like TNT, way too many nearby glass panes intact. The tree doesn’t even shiver and the large glass street lamp shades don’t break. A TNT explosion producing that much smoke would have just shredded the flags and bent or sheared off the poles. The flame also lasts too long. This was a slower, lower brissance explosion, something like ANFO or black powder, lots of heavy smoke and flame but no shattered brick or concrete.

DF said earlier that there was a report of “ball bearings’” being removed from victims, but I have seen no supporting evidence.

There was just a press conference with one of the trauma surgeons at mass general. He said there were lots of shrapnel injuries. He said he didn’t see anything like BBs or ball bearings, but lots of little scraps of metal.

Depending on where you live true black powder isn’t always that easy to get, mostly what you find is BP equivalent like Pyrodex, and most reloaders don’t use it unless they’re into cowboy action shooting. A lot of local fire departments place onerous storage requirements on true BP because it’s comparatively unstable and much easier to ignite than nitro based equivalents and smokeless powders.

Felons can have muzzloaders shipped straight to their front door in most states, ‘cuz the feds don’t consider original or replicas to be “firearms” per se. I think they become illegal weapons once a ex con loads them, but I’m not even sure about that.

The other reason that most people don’t use true black powder is that it needs to be cleaned soon after shooting. You have to use hot water and a lot of it, if you allow the residue to sit for any length of time it will attract moisture and form sulfuric acid, ruining the gun in short order. Obviously you then have to dry the gun and all the internals thoroughly or you get rust that way. This is part of why surviving antique firearms from the Old West command so much money, because the black powder cleaning regimen was so unforgiving a disproportionate number of them were destroyed.

It potentially illuminates the organizational level and resources available to the perpetrator(s). Somebody truly interested in maximizing casualties wouldn’t use a low order explosive unless they didn’t have access to or couldn’t make anything more powerful.

146 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Apr 15, 2013 8:15:06pm

re: #8 freetoken

Actually, the AR-15 is not a terror weapon. The military versions are weapons of war, while the civilian version are often designed for heavy fighting. But that does not make such a rifle a ‘terror weapon’.

It is important to enforce the meaning of words.

Weirdly enough I’m always interested in the technical side of these events. What the bombs were made of, where they were placed, how they got there, all that kind of crime scene/forensic detail that investigators and security professionals will need to know for future planning, this is what piques my interest.

I’m glad the photos show so many fluorescent vests. Notice that there was no absence of emergency personnel, and look how fast the support & life-saving organizations showed up.

Gawd, if it turns out this was some “Patriot” group I am going to absolutely bathe in Smug. I’d hate for my hypothesis to be proven correct - this would be a lot easier if it was Scary Brown Man again - but if it turns out to be whitey, Obama-hatin’, white supremacist Freeper/NeoConfederate types (pick your poison) it’s going to be fun watching the conservative media eat shit for the next month.

No claim of responsibility indicates to me that it wasn’t that big of an organization or group… Somebody who doesn’t have a media wing or a sympathetic ear. I’m afraid it will be a while before we know anything, unless there’s been evidence uncovered that the authorities can act on quickly.

Well I don’t know what else to call it, if smug is the right word. These people are tripping over themselves wanting to blame Muslims and if it turns out that it’s home-grown white-bread psychopaths following their favorite right-wing ideology, what else would I be feeling, watching them choke on their own bilge, shamelessly trying to backpedal? That’s if it turns out the attackers have an ideological motivation anyway. This is probably an example of Islamic terrorism. The targeting of civilians at a random crowded public event and the use of the same IED strategies used in ME attacks leans me in this direction.(1 device detinated followed by mutliple secondaries to inflict more panic/casualties)

Right wing terrorists generally attack political targets
Tim Mcveigh his the federal building and The Noregian mass killer targeted a childrens camp for the politcally left.

Anarchists target symbols of establishment and tend to call in there attacks to avoid casualties

Communist radical(dont really exist anymore) also tended to target symbols of capitalist wealth.

Its not in good taste to label all muslims as being reasponsible for terroist organizations using the quran for ligitmacy but its also not in good taste to remain intellectually stupid for the sake of political correctness. These attacks follow patterns based on the ideology of the group carrying out the attacks. These attacks dont fit the behavioral motif’s of any other established terrorist movements that target the US.

Of course there is always the possibility im wrong;) Anomolies do happen
