Boston Bombing Suspects Planned Terror Spree

Authorities believe they acted alone
US News • Views: 29,407

The New York Times reports on the arsenal of guns and explosives amassed by terror suspects Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev; they were apparently planning more murderous attacks.

Mr. Davis told CBS News’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday: “We have reason to believe, based upon the evidence that was found at that scene — the explosions, the explosive ordnance that was unexploded and the firepower that they had — that they were going to attack other individuals.”

Along with determining that the suspects had made at least five pipe bombs, the authorities recovered four firearms that they believe the suspects used, according to a law enforcement official. The authorities found an M-4 carbine rifle — a weapon similar to ones used by American forces in Afghanistan — on the boat where the younger suspect was found Friday night in Watertown, Mass., 10 miles west of Boston.

Two handguns and a BB gun that the authorities believe the brothers used in an earlier shootout with officers in Watertown were also recovered, said one official briefed on the investigation. The authorities said they believe the suspects had fired roughly 80 rounds in that shootout, in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was fatally wounded, the official said.

Among the unanswered questions facing investigators are where the suspects acquired their weapons and explosives, how they got the money to pay for them, and whether others helped plan and carry out the attack last Monday. Mayor Thomas M. Menino of Boston said he believed the brothers were not affiliated with a larger network. “All of the information that I have, they acted alone, these two individuals, the brothers,” he said on ABC News’s “This Week.”

Although I have seen a lot of sarcasm about how maybe we need background checks for pressure cookers, it seems pretty obvious that they could have killed more people if they used only guns and skipped the bombs, which—for all their planning and brazenness—killed only 3.

OK, so how much would an M-4 carbine cost? I get the impression that the family was fairly well off. Would this be something well beyond what two brothers could afford with a generous “allowance”? Assuming they weren’t spending money on extraneous personal activities.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think there is a civilian version of the M-4 so unless it was actually an AR15 variant, they probably had to get it on the black market. The government pays about $1000 a piece for them, don’t know how much someone would have to pay to get one illegally.

They weren’t well off. They lived in a small apartment in Cambridge. I don’t think the father worked, but he’s been back overseas for several months. The mother did facials in the apartment. She was also arrested last June for shop-lifting $1600 worth of clothing. She’s now back overseas as well. I don’t know what the older kid did for work. The younger boy was in college at UMass Dartmouth.

We own that same pressure cooker. I think it was less that $100. No idea how much the guns were. But I think if I had to guess they spent less than $2000 on their arsenal.

I’m thinking that he’s more like a fictional TV series: after the initial growth phase of fans he has to increase the outlandishness to keep up interest. Sooner or later it will implode, and collapse back down to a level where only the True Believers will follow.

Just looked at Beck’s website. His stunning revelations amounts to this: after the bombing, law enforcement considered the Saudi student to be a person of interest and they therefore created a file on him, which was later updated to reflect the fact that he is not considered to be a suspect.

Beck also (1) alleges that Alharbi was “set” to be deported (whatever that means) in the aftermath of the bombing and (2) provides a link to a foxnews story that cites an unnamed source alleging that Alharbi was, at one point, one of the 700,000 people on the terror watch list.

30 lawhawk  Mon, Apr 22, 2013 9:17:29am

I see that the right wing still thinks that the Boston terrorists should be handled in an extra-judicial manner and that they aren’t entitled to Miranda rights and protections because they carried out acts of terrorism on US soil and despite being naturalized citizens.

I’ve long held a belief that the handling of terror cases should depend on the geographical nexus to where the individual was captured/arrested (I’ve got a few old comments on the subject but a quick and dirty summation is that it boils down to whether someone goes into a military tribunal or federal court depending on where/how they are captured - not who that person is. Those captured overseas get tribunals, those captured in the act within the US get federal court.)

Someone carrying out acts of terrorism in the US and arrested in the US should have the law enforcement approach, with access to courts and Miranda. Law enforcement and evidenciary processes are able to be applied. This isn’t a war zone halfway around the world, and a foreign government isn’t involved in the intel or capture of the individual.

That differs from those who are captured overseas on a field of battle or captured by third parties and handed over to US forces. Evidence isn’t easily gathered on a battlefield or rights easily protected when you’re trying not to get killed on a battlefield. Soldiers aren’t LEOs and aren’t and shouldn’t be held to the same standard are LEOs in Mirandizing those who, moments before, were engaged in firefights with intent to kill. A war zone is not the same as the scene of a domestic terror attack or a plot that is thwarted by local, state, and federal law enforcement.

Abridging the traditional justice system for those engaging in domestic terrorism undermines the rights of everyone (and the folks on the right who keep carping about how the government is taking away your rights, guns, and freedoms are those who are loudest in the calls to restrict the legal rights and protections to the terrorists in Boston).

The Boston bombers were caught here in the US, and are entitled to the full protection under the law. The surviving terrorist will get his day in court, and justice will prevail. I expect him to face the rest of his life in prison, though he is also likely to face charges sufficient for the death penalty. Law enforcement has a lot of material to go through tying him to the attacks, future planning, and other related issues. Law enforcement is already trying to determine whether others were involved, and despite the bleatings from Beck or the Mirror, it so far appears to be a terror group of two - the brothers and no more. That could change depending on where the investigation takes things, but it’s not unheard of to have small cadres engaging in terror attacks. The Norway terror attacks were carried out by a lone individual. The DC sniper attacks were by a duo. A small group was involved in the OKC attack. They didn’t involve outside help or training beyond what they already were able to glean from available sources.

But law enforcement is in a position to get the information, and this particular terrorist can do no more harm - he’s in custody. Law enforcement is also tracking down whether anyone else may be planning follow on attacks. We, as a nation, are better prepared to deal with terror attacks - and the way that local, state, and federal resources were brought to bear in the chaotic moments and hours after the attacks shows that we’ve learned some of the lessons from 9/11. Doesn’t mean we’ve learned them all, or that some lessons need to be relearned, but we are still safer than we were before 9/11. We’re on the watch and remain vigilant.

The terrorists only have to get lucky. We have to be good 100% of the time. And that includes balancing our civil rights and liberties with the need for public safety.

This is interesting. Who shoots at nuclear power plants?

Search still on for gunman after shootout near Watts Bar plant

A gunman is still at large following an overnight shootout with a security officer on the perimeter of the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant site near Spring City, Tenn., early Sunday.

The suspect fired multiple rounds at the Tennessee Valley Authority security officer who was on a routine patrol near the banks of Chickamauga Lake about 2 a.m. Sunday, TVA spokesman Jim Hopson said.

The officer first spotted the suspect near an old concrete boat ramp in a restricted area of the plant property about a quarter-mile from the site’s protected area, which houses the reactor and power production facilities.

When the officer confronted the person, “The individual fired on the officer, striking the officer’s vehicle,” said Hopson. “The officer returned fire, and as the officer was calling for backup, the individual fled the scene.”

Both parties fired multiple rounds, he added. The security officer was not hurt and, as of yet, authorities have found no evidence that the gunman was struck either, according to Hopson.

Unconfirmed reports have suggested that the suspect might have had a boat. Hopson, however, said investigators have yet to verify how the person accessed the area or escaped.

Tyrant Kim Jong-il liked to feast on hippos, snakes and spiders, his personal sushi chef has claimed.

Kenji Fujimoto said: “There were a lot of strange requests. Snake was one. They got someone else to cook that. I only work with seafood.

“Hippopotamus was very good and tasted like chicken. He wanted to eat spiders one day.”

Mr Fujimoto, who fled the country in 2001, said that the North Korean leader also enjoyed drinking Bordeaux wine and Johnnie Walker whisky and Cognac.

Jong-il, who died in 2011, also banned his family from wearing perfume or aftershave because he hated the smell.

When I began to dig into Civil War history a few years ago, it came as quite a surprise to me to find how the era of Reconstruction was portrayed so negatively by most “mainstream” historians (not to mention the popular press and media/movies) for many decades afterward. Such a view of course goes along with, if not explains, the violence Blacks experienced during those decades on both sides of the Mason Dixon line, and the political and social disenfranchisement until the 1960’s.

Thaddeus Stevens and many of the other Radical Republicans deserve a much needed rehabilitation.

White House says Boston bombings suspect won’t be tried as enemy combatant. Not surprising, but it will infuriate the RWNJs nonetheless.

And if the WH did plan to try his as an “enemy combatant”, the teahadists would be screeching for his impeachment because he is ignoring the constitution.

re: #76 Bulworth

When I began to dig into Civil War history a few years ago, it came as quite a surprise to me to find how the era of Reconstruction was portrayed so negatively by most “mainstream” historians (not to mention the popular press and media/movies) for many decades afterward. Such a view of course goes along with, if not explains, the violence Blacks experienced during those decades on both sides of the Mason Dixon line, and the political and social disenfranchisement until the 1960’s.

Thaddeus Stevens and many of the other Radical Republicans deserve a much needed rehabilitation.

Reconstruction was a mess. We seem to have a habit of military conquest and then total fuck-ups.

So then how did they pay for the arsenal? Did they knock over a couple of atms or something?

Credit card?

Bought one a year ago , Bushmaster M-4 $800 . 10k is a stretch . Actually the arsenal they possessed as listed , could probably be had for less than 5k . It has not yet been determined if there is anyone else involved , where funding and training could have been provided .
A triple murder has been mentioned , the victims atleast one of which was known by the older brother . The nature of the crime is puzzling , three people with their throats cut , marijuana sprinkled over their bodies and some 2 thousand dollars left untouched .
If he was in fact connected to that , I’ll leave everyone to their own guesses why .
