Ahead of Debate, Glenn Greenwald Spews Insults at Hayden and Dershowitz

“The most pernicious human beings on the planet”
Weird • Views: 14,907

Coming up tonight in Toronto at 7pm Eastern time, the Mighty Greenwald will be debating former CIA head Gen. Michael Hayden and Alan Dershowitz. This is an unusual event, because Greenwald normally arranges his “debates” to avoid being confronted by people who actually know what they’re talking about.

But in the usual Mighty G style, the courageous journalist is spewing vitriol at both of his debate opponents ahead of time like a professional wrestler.

“I consider him and Alan Dershowitz” - the two men Mr. Greenwald, 47, will face at Friday’s Munk Debates - “two of the most pernicious human beings on the planet. I find them morally offensive. There’s an element of hypocrisy to being in the same room with them, treating them as if I have outward respect, because I don’t.”

Karma will one day have its way with Greenwald. I only hope it’s broadcast on pay-per-view.

He sounds nice.

I honestly wonder who it is this “debate” is aimed towards. Greenwald’s supporters will go in assuming he’s right about everything, while his detractors will assume he’s full of shit from the very start. There’s not really a lot of folks watching this anymore who haven’t already made up their minds.

It’s probably aimed at the usual Munk Debates audience, whoever that is:

Be it resolved state surveillance is a legitimate defence of our freedoms…

They all sound very Canadian in a way:

I often disagree with Alan Dershowitz’s opinions, but he’s one hell of a debater. And he’s used to dealing with sleazy litigators. This may not go as the Mighty Greenwald hopes.

re: #3 Targetpractice

Like most televised debates, it’s not a debate. It’s a shouting match, and an opportunity for both sides to stick their hands down their pants whenever a perceived point is scored.

I don’t know why anyone serious bothers with The Glenn at this point.

Not that Glenn won’t be quick to declare “victory” and write off a poor performance as not being prepared for their “lies.”

Why does that sound like a promo for a professional wrestling event? Does Greenwald ever break keyfabe? Or worse yet, is it possible that he actually believes the spew that emits from his mouth-hole each day?

I would like to say that he “CAN’T” be that stupid, but I’ve learned a long time ago that is a challenge that should never be made.

Be interesting to see how this plays out, I’m predicting a “Gish Gallop” by Greenwald, and when Dershowitz and Hayden can’t possibly get to cover all the points that GG shotguns at them, GG crowns himself the winner.

I’d like to think I’m wrong, but deep in my heart I know that’s how it’s going to play.

Afternoon Lizardim. The only problem I have here is that the Hypnowald will declare victory no matter how badly he gets demolished. This is, after all, why I started calling him the Hypnowald - he can do no wrong, and if you don’t believe him when he utters one of his magnificent soliloquies, well, HOW DARE YOU. How go things among the lizardfolk?

Like I said, I’m expecting something much like the performance Ken Ham gave against Bill Nye: An opening Gish Gallop, followed by further muddying the waters while taking every opportunity to effectively insinuate aloud that his opponents are “apologists” for the NSA.

There are some differences, but the premier episodes are pretty much the same.

chitterlings (n.)
late 13c., cheterlingis “entrails, souse” (early 13c. in surnames), origins obscure, but probably from an unrecorded Old English word having something to do with entrails (related to Old English cwið “womb;” compare German Kutteln “guts, bowels, tripe, chitterlings,” Gothic qiþus “womb”). Variants chitlins (1842) and chitlings (1880) both also had a sense of “shreds, tatters.”

Even if Greenwald weren’t so dishonest (and possibly crazy), I wouldn’t buy anything he says because all of it comes with a huge dose of hyperbole.

Whenever I see that professionally, I believe that the hyperbole is used to cover a lack of true substance. Persuasive writing can be accomplished with out all of those adjectives if the underlying argument is solid. He must feel insecure about his arguments if he needs to pepper everything with great exaggeration.

A nonfactor in Israel, considering that Israel knows that peace was never going to be possible when Fatah-Hamas reconciliation was on the table and Hamas was all “let’s destroy Israel and ignore all prior deals, and oh, we’re never going to recognize Israel’s right to exist”.

Israelis are a whole lot more pragmatic and plugged into the realities on the ground than some DKoser who thinks that a peace process push by any US Administration will succeed when one side wont even recognize the right of the other to exist. And that side is the Palestinians, who comprise Hamas (and control Gaza exclusively).

If a reporter agrees that a conversation or event is off-the-record, then of course he cannot print what was said during that interchange. But the unwritten rule—the one that directly applies here—is that if a reporter enters an off-the-record event uninvited and has not agreed to the off-the-record terms, he is free to report what happens inside that event. It’s the responsibility of the event organizers to keep reporters from entering events without invitations. As long as the reporter does not misrepresent himself and does not attempt to conceal a recording device, the event is fair game. That’s the rule.

He’s not wrong.

The biggest surprise to me is that people can just walk into a meeting of the Trilateral Commission in DC. I would have guessed they only met in Geneva and you had to have a Bilderberg password and a secret Mason handshake to get in.

The Council on Foreign Relations is pretty much the DC Kiwanis Club.

I walked over to the meeting room, walked straight to the front entrance of the room, nodded politely to the staffer at the door (she nodded back) and entered along with dozens of other people who were filing in.

Nobody ever asked me who I was.

Sounds pretty easy, they should beef up security.

So, imagine my surprise when I learned that wingnut kook, David Horowitz, has a “book” called Black Skin Privilege and the American Dream, with a picture of Obama on the cover, arguing that IN FACT, the most insidious bias in our culture today is black skin privilege.

I don’t know, I just can’t even….

It’s a follow-up to Horowitz’ academic masterpiece about the privileged status of Jews in 1905 Russia.

No one seems to know how many Nigerian girls are actually missing

Estimates now up to 300

We are now numb to whatever happens in Africa.

For example, speaking of Nigeria, how much attention has this gotten?

19 killed in car bomb in Nigerian capital, Abuja, days before international leaders expected

Also in bombings today:

One killed in fourth explosion to hit Egypt Friday

If guns are more your choice:

11 Ethiopian students killed in violent confrontations with police in country’s largest state

Maybe sudden deportations could grab some attention?

Republic of Congo deports nearly 60,000

I always had to chuckle at that. It was freshman international relations where I first heard of Fukuyama and Allan Bloom and all the godfathers of neoconservatism. And in a natural resources class taught by a long-haired hippie stereotype of a professor, I first learned about Julian Simon’s theories on innovation being the best way to fight off environmental catastrophe. well my real point is that likud leaders, every bit as much as palestinian leaders, engage in “israeli-palestinian peace talk theater”

as for real solutions?

“lehugbox” wrote a few days ago:

If Jordan and Egypt were to accept ownership over Gaza and a negotiated area of the W-B this would all be over in a second

which is of course utterly naive since if there is one thing that a majority of israeli and american jews believe, it’s that “the 1967 borders are indefensible”

my personal suggestion is that there be two states, israel and palestine, bound together in a defense union that would allow the idf to secure the current borders

but this cannot be accepted, certainly not by likud administrations since their members will accept nothing less than the total assimilation of the west bank and the expulsion of the palestinians, and the palestinian leadership won’t accept it since they are dominated by factions that will accept nothing less than the destruction of the jewish state

but the united states demands theater, so we get theater

Pasadena’s anti-evolution, anti-gay health director has some explaining to do

Eric Walsh may be a heck of a public health director. He’s been in charge of Pasadena’s health department since 2010, and Pasadena is generally regarded as one of Southern California’s better-run cities. His job includes overseeing restaurant inspections, and Pasadena’s restaurants seem to be doing just fine.

But he sure does have an intolerant streak.

In videos that came to light this week and that record him delivering a series of sermons, he denounces homosexuality as a sin, describes evolution as a “religion created by Satan” and says the prophet Muhammad was a Satanist. He contends that God does not recognize any second marriage following a divorce unless the first was destroyed by adultery. He’s also no big fan of plastic surgery or Disney.

An interesting development with DAR, accepting new members based on DNA. This will allow ladies of color who don’t have the traditional paper trail of documents to become members. Calling all descendants of Sally Hemmings!

That’s good to hear knowing the DAR’s history. Don’t think anyone in my family is getting into DAR anytime soon. We’re total {relative} noobs.

Way cool. Not surprised that both of those guys were great guys. Peck struck me as someone who although he was a widely respected actor wasn’t afraid to ne a regular guy. Story I read about Boys From Brazil is that he signed on after finding out his friends Larry and Jimmy had signed on. Referring to Laurence Oliver and james Mason.

I met Cary Grant once, at Hollywood Park Racetrack. In the late 70’s, I was a college student, he was without question the HOTTEST old guy ever in history. I’d have done him.

A few years ago, I was teaching an English class here and one of my students - she was 23 - said, “Sean Connery gets me hot.”

So I guess there’s hope for me yet….now if I can just down that Scottish brogue. :)

Yeah, half my family is a bunch of noobs (grandparents immigrated) and the other half may or may not have been hanging around since 1620. Certainly since sometime in that decade. No one seems to have covered themselves with glory in the meantime, but I do have at least one Revolutionary War ancestor. Which kind of surprised me.

Certainly. Bush was a big enough asshole, but the right has gotten drastically worse since he left office in 2009. Look at the fascist gang blocking roads and defying the authorities in Nevada. Then imagine their party in power again. (And it is their party, since radio liars and right-wing politicians everywhere have been falling over themselves in their rush to support the Bundy insurrection.)

The bolded, a thousand times over.

The GOP is possibly damaged beyond repair at this point. It still pains me to some fairly intelligent people here still maintain affiliation with them, often with the attitude of “Gosh, I wish I could do something about it.”

You can. Stop supporting a political party that is becoming a fucking incubator for right wing terrorism. And let’s be blunt: the situation in Bunkerville, NV has been encouraged by the Republican Party, mainly through the Tea Baggers that run the show.

If you can live with that, you really need reexamine your political ideologies.

Not sure when our first was either. Know the latest though was in the early 20’s between 20 and 23.

OK, you’re newer than me, then. My grandparents went to Canada in the 1890s and came to the US around 1902 or 03.
Enjoy the shiny freshness of your American-ness!

Although opinions here varied I think he represented Kerry’s remarks well enough that we all knew what he was talking about. A lot of people that repeated the story misrepresented it but the original reporting was sound. So much of our foreign policy discussion is well rehearsed and focus group tested talking points. I Find it much more interesting and informative to hear what world leaders really talk about when cameras aren’t on.

Again, what he said was what Israeli prime ministers have said. You buffoonishly fantasizing about how it means the US dems are going to be turning away from Israel was pants-on-head stupid.

All the updings. This business of people who are not themselves insane and/or bigoted supporting this sorry excuse for a political party because the Democrats are somehow worse is getting very hard to justify.
