Dallas Ebola Updates: Nurse’s Condition Upgraded to “Good,” Duncan’s Contacts All Symptom-Free

Getting better, we hope
Health • Views: 34,203

News from Dallas is looking a lot better tonight; the nurse who tested positive for Ebola is improving.

The condition of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital nurse Nina Pham has been upgraded. She is now said to be in good condition, after being reported in stable condition on Monday. Pham is being treated for an Ebola infection.

And CDC director Tom Frieden announced today that all 48 people who were identified as close contacts of Thomas Eric Duncan have now cleared the “high risk period” without showing any symptoms of the disease.

Courting the anti-science conservatives, Rand Paul pulls a Sarah Palin:

“You guys have heard some of the examples of where those dollars go,” the fun Alaska governor said to the guys in the audience, acknowledging their media savvy about Congress members, who sometimes acquire public money for frivolous projects. “You’ve heard about the bridges. And some of these pet projects. They really don’t make a whole lot of sense.”

A troubled look crossed her face. “And sometimes these dollars go to projects that have little or nothing to do with the public good, things like …” she grinned, shaking her head side to side, her voice rising to a facetious pitch “… fruit fly research in Paris, France.” Feeling in tune with the guys in her audience, she added, “I kid you not.”

I’m thinking they are doing all kinds of research on the blood from Ebola survivor Dr. Kent Brantly.

Also, probably will put Brantly into blood transfusion production mode. How much and how often can they draw blood from him until he is too frail for more or the antibodies get too diminished if that can happen? I don’t know all that much about human blood being used in this way.

It is fascinating and fortunate at the same time.

So Sen. Paul - as his contribution to fighting the crisis of the Ebola outbreak - is grousing on Twitter about supposed “frivolous” studies financed by NIH: as opposed to their spending it on researching a rare disease mainly found in foreign countries in Africa, the scale of whose epidemic was completely unforeseen, - JUST IN CASE - there was a domestic outbreak. ??

Why do I think that, even if NIH or CDC had been doing Ebola research, Paul would have been tweeting snarky messages about NIH “wasting money studying obscure tropical viruses”?

Inorite? I have never seen anyone genuinely enjoy being the First Couple of the sole remaining super power so much. I know it’s worn on POTUS (as seen by his graying hair), but they both really seem to be living a dream. As much as Bill Clinton seemed to love it, Hillary didn’t seem to like it so much. I don’t get the sense that any of the Repubs were as cheerful, maybe Raygun, but he was slipping into dementia.

There’s no evidence so far that the convalescent serum technique even works (we’re dealing with a small sample size so far). And the Zmapp drug is predicated on a similar method, using Ebola antibodies that are then put into a tobacco plant to avoid the blood typing issue that goes with working from Brantly’s blood.

Interesting. I do remember reading in the past that tobacco plants are very good for creating new medicines. I understand the leaves are perfect for creating chemical properties that are manipulated but still plant based. And the huge leaf surface can make lots of it with all the cells.

Why do I think that, even if NIH or CDC had been doing Ebola research, Paul would have been tweeting snarky messages about NIH “wasting money studying obscure tropical viruses”?

Putz.

They are grousing over the NIH/CDC spending money on obesity studies, even though obesity is a multibillion dollar hit on health care - whether it’s diabetes, heart disease, and all the diet/drugs spent to get weight under control, to say nothing of the surgical options.

They grouse because they’re not offering anything constructive. Had the CDC been spending money on tropical diseases, they’d complain that they’re not focusing on obesity.

As it is, there’s a whole bunch of tropical diseases that are making their way into the US - Chikungunya is the latest to warrant attention. Before that, West Nile. And then there are diseases that could come back to the US - yellow fever and malaria. The list will keep changing and growing, particularly if climate change opens up habitat for these diseases to get a foothold.

I’ve seen him live once, during his Musicology tour (he gave everyone in attendance his new album, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, and all of his other tour stops, it was his last #1 album and it was #1 because of this).

Dude can put on a fucking show!

He played a couple of years ago in one of the theaters in Denver, tickets were very expensive. He played two nights. I tried to get in to just one night and both shows sold out in minutes. I had a friend (a groovy dredlocked gal who’s a masseuse in Boulder) that went to the second night. I asked her how it was.

Have a good friend who is a vet and was discussing with her yesterday. She says there really isn’t enough evidence to be conclusive, but what there is points to dogs being able to carry and transmit the virus.

One thing about the ‘net, behavior can be changed fast and if people start to post whatever and there is no real outcome then look the hell out. Twitter may be harming themselves while they also try to be all to everyone so they can profit.

Well, that talk is coming from people who also are very afraid of the cremation ashes of Thomas Eric Duncan, so much so that the State of Louisiana is blocking the ashes entrance to their state by law.

Now I don’t know the answer to the human/pet transmission question. But do consider the source of those questions.

The heat is on GOPTPers because the truth is finally emerging from the halls of Congress and some sunlight is shining on his piss poor party, so he has to find something to rebut it. I find Facebook very creepy. And I find that it attracts an even lower common denominator than Twitter a lot of the times.

I use a pseudonym at Facebook and yet I still have 500 “friends” from all over the world. It’s ubiquitous and being a guy born in the early 80s, I accept that and am a part of it.

I actually prefer the limited 140 character medium as opposed to the free-for-all format at Facebook. That makes me measured in my posts.

I don’t know if I’d say No outright. Ebola was transmitted from monkeys to humans originally, so inter-species transmission is possible. I’d look to pigs before dogs, though.

And I certainly wouldn’t kill a dog because some people are scared shitless. I’d prefer to see tests and diagnostic work first. Quarantine him. Test him. And take it from there.
