Vox Misrepresents Obama’s 2008 Vaccination Stance

Vox spreads misinformation
Health • Views: 59,626

Today we find “explanatory journalism” site Vox digging up a quote by Barack Obama from 2008 and using it to argue that Obama Supports Vaccines Now — but Pandered to Anti-Vaxxers in 2008.

Chris Christie has come under fire for remarks suggesting that parents should have a choice in which vaccines their children do and don’t receive. Those remarks got fierce pushback from public health officials, but it turns out Christie isn’t the only one who has questioned the validity of vaccines. Both President Obama and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) did so during their presidential runs in 2008. Brendan Nyhan at Dartmouth noted their remarks at the time:

“We’ve seen just a skyrocketing autism rate. Some people are suspicious that it’s connected to the vaccines. This person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it.”

—Barack Obama, Pennsylvania Rally, April 21, 2008.

“It’s indisputable that (autism) is on the rise among children, the question is what’s causing it. And we go back and forth and there’s strong evidence that indicates it’s got to do with a preservative in vaccines.”

—John McCain, Texas town hall meeting, February 29, 2008.

This is the exact right moment to note: the science that disproves a link between autism and vaccines (particularly the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine) is not inconclusive. It wasn’t back in 2008 when McCain and Obama made these remarks — and it has become even more solid in the eight years since then.

Is this quote accurate? Yes — but it’s not the end of the story at all. In fact, it’s a misrepresentation of Obama’s views. Because when asked directly about his opinion on vaccination, here’s what Obama said:

Well, here’s a rare bit of good news in the endless tedium that has become the U.S. election. It appears that Barack Obama has ticked off the antivaccine contingent. I know, I know, I said I would try to lay off this topic for a few days, but this is just too amusing. Apparently, he’s gone a long way towards redeeming himself for his previous gaffe when it came to vaccines and autism, and the antivaccine zealots over at Age of Autism are all in a tizzy over it:

Last Friday evening, September 5, 2008, I had the opportunity to ask Senator Barack Obama about childhood vaccine safety/choice. His response, “I am not for selective vaccination, I believe that it will bring back deadly diseases, like polio.

He went onto say in so many words that he is for more science and the funding of more science if it’s needed. (His science response is fuzzy, as his first response stunned me for a second). I previously gave his staffer a folder of information on vaccines. The Senator promised me that he would take a look at it.

And that’s not the only misrepresentation in this Vox article. From the book “Vaccine: The Debate in Modern America:”

Two months after McCain’s statement, the Washington Post reported that then-Senator Barack Obama made a similar claim as he campaigned for the Democratic nomination for president. Speaking at a rally in Pennsyvania, Obama said, “We’ve seen just a skyrocketing autism rate. Some people are suspicious that it’s connected to the vaccines. This person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it.”

A later analysis demonstrated that when Obama said, “this person included,” he was referring to the person who had asked a question, not himself, and that Obama believed that vaccinations were necessary to the health of the nation.

Bottom line: the author of that Vox article did some very sloppy research; found a quote and jumped to conclusions about it, without looking any further.

UPDATE at 2/2/15 1:08:17 pm by Charles Johnson

Here’s video of Obama’s complete statement, and it’s much more pro-vaccine than is being reported. (h/t: Gus.)

YouTube

“We’ve seen just a skyrocketing autism rate. Nobody knows exactly why. There are some people who are suspicious that it’s connected to vaccines and triggers, but (pointing to his right) this person included. The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it. Part of the reason I think it’s very important to research it is those vaccines are also preventing huge numbers of deaths among children and preventing debilitating illnesses like Polio. And so we can’t afford to junk our vaccine system. We’ve got to figure out why is it that this is happening so that we are starting to see a more normal, what was a normal, rate of autism. Because if we keep on seeing increases at the rate we’re seeing we’re never going to have enough money to provide all the special needs, special education funding that’s going to be necessary.”

DATE: April 21, 2008
LOCATION: Blue Bell, PA

Please note that when Obama said, “the science right now is inconclusive,” he was referring to research into the causes of autism — not to a vaccine-autism link.

UPDATE at 2/2/15 1:19:50 pm by Charles Johnson

And now this misrepresentation of Obama’s position is being repeated by Politico: In 2008, President Obama Was ‘Suspicious’ of Vaccines.

UPDATE at 2/2/15 5:56:19 pm by Charles Johnson

Thanks to LA Times columnist Michael Hiltzik for picking up on this story: No, Obama Didn’t ‘Pander to Anti-Vaxxers’ in 2008.

A viewing of the video from that appearance shows that interpretation is dead wrong. He contradicted the anti-vaccination viewpoint, and spoke out forthrightly and squarely in favor of childhood immunization and pretty much dismissed the autism link. Kudos to Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs for setting the record straight.

Obama campaign spokesman Tommy Vietor has supplied video which suggests that Obama may not have been referring to himself when he said that “some people” were suspicious about a connection between autism and childhood vaccinations. The video shows the candidate pointing to someone in the audience when he adds the words, “This person included.” Take a look the video below, and decide for yourself.
I agree that the video casts a somewhat different light on Obama’s remarks. On the other hand, Obama went on to describe the science as “inconclusive,” a statement at odds with several major studies looking at the alleged connection.

14 Prof. Backpfeifengesicht, PhD  Feb 2, 2015 12:26:30pm

More context:

“My goal is to fully fund special education,” Obama replied, starting off on a dissertation about funding for such children. He noted some statistics about how much the fed government pays for such educational funding.
Then he started talking about “early screening” for children, more medical testing to identify children who will have these special needs. Then Obama turned to autism, saying, “That’s s an area where our basic investment, our basic research has to increase. There are huge opportunities for us to figure out” how diseases occur, calling for more funding for research into the causes and potential cures for autism and other disease.
“We’ve seen just a skyrocketing autism rate. Some people are suspicious that it’s connected to the vaccines. This person included. [Points to someone in the audience.] The science right now is inconclusive, but we have to research it. We can’t afford to junk our vaccine system, we have to figure out what’s happening. If we keep on seeing the increases in the rate we’re seeing, we’re never going to have enough money” to take care of these children.

I recall Christie quarantining, forcibly, a nurse who returned from working with Ebola patients in West Africa. We must protect ourselves, and she’s sick, Uh, no she’s not.
But now it’s all about “choices”, and “rights” and government interfering with your family and…..Why was he concerned with a disease that is less easily spread than say, measles?

The whole assertion of pandering seems to rest on whether Obama was saying the reasons for the skyrocketing autism rate were inconclusive, or whether the connection to vaccines was inconclusive. Pretty thin.

Obama did commit a minor gaffe by claiming that the science is inconclusive. It wasn’t at the time, but those weren’t prepared remarks, and for all we know, Obama might have meant to say that those alleged studies were inconclusive. He also immediately said that the vaccination system on the whole is OK, and later clarified his position to leave no doubt that he supports vaccination.
Even if Vox wanted to interpret it as “pandering” (and there’s no evidence that it was), Vox is dishonest to omit the fact that “this person” wasn’t Obama and that Obama supported vaccination when asked directly.

Exactly, I’m not giving Obama a complete pass on this, the Wakefield study wasn’t proven a complete fraud, but many other studies showed the results were at best just plain wrong at that point. No one could say the science was inconclusive unless you were paying no attention or already dug into the bullshit camp at that point. (Obama was most likely in the former camp). Dumb shit like this is part of a list of the few legitimate reasons reasons I didn’t like him in 2008 or his first year-ish in office. (There were a lot of dumb reasons based on bullshit as well and I freely admit that.)

That being said, this dude is clearly trying to make Obama look like he flip flopped from Jenny McCarthy to Bill Nye over night for political expediency and that is weapons-grade bullshit.

People in the third world - in places like Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan have to not only walk miles to get vaccinated in some instances, but they have to worry about being targeted by terrorists who think that the vaccination teams are going to do bad things to these people (sterilization or worse), so their solution is to kill the teams and anyone who might be helping them.

Polio is still a known scourge in these parts of the world - because we can’t eradicate the bugger.

Meanwhile, scientists are working on a malaria vaccine that would reduce the millions of cases worldwide. And ebola vaccine trials are underway as well. Each of which would save countless lives.

These idiots want to roll it back.

Even assuming the worst interpretation, OK, Obama might not have paid attention to this particular issue at that time and may have heard about some “studies or something”, and used the politician-speak here. OK, shit happens. What counts is the capacity to learn and correct past mistakes. I think there’s no doubt about Obama on that score. Oh, and that’s still far from pandering.

There you go. He was very obviously referring to the person who asked the question. And the full statement is much more pro-vaccine than it’s being pictured as.

Yes. He’s talking about autism. Only mentions people that are “suspicious that it’s connected to vaccines and triggers” autism. But he’s focused on autism and is pro-vaccine. I don’t see how this qualifies as “pandering to anti-vaxxers.”

104 jaunte  Feb 2, 2015 1:11:02pm

I’d like to see some polling/research on the relative power of pandering on this issue for conservative vs. liberal politicans. I suspect the woo-woo antivaxxer vote on the Democratic side is a tiny percentage, and the ‘government can’t tell me what to do” vote on the GOP side significant.

We have to wear seat belts in our vehicles—and provide the proper seats for our children as they grow, by law. People didn’t like that at first, but it’s been proved that seatbelts and proper seating for kids save lives. We don’t have a “choice”. Furthermore, we don’t have a “choice” of beating our children, starving our children, exposing our children to conditions that constitute neglect or other abuse. It’s the law.

There are many laws that protect us, our children and us from each other in many situations.

I won’t be happy until these anti-vaxxer types are reined in by legal means when it means that by their neglect we’re seeing an increase in disease and to protect everyone else from them.

And I want no exemptions for “religious” or “philosophical” reasons, only genuine, verified medical ones. If they don’t like it, they can find other means to educate their kids.

Hannity will chew out “progressives” because apparently Fox now thinks they’re responsible for anti-vaxxers or are anti-vaxxers, while Bill’O will haul in some two-bit “expert” to say the President is wrong for saying on Sunday that kids need to be vaccinated.

How did you get Roger Ailes’ daily directives for FNC for today! But yeah I see that Kennedy the former MTV VJ is already blaming irrational progressives for this and totally ignoring that there’s plenty of anti-vaxx kooks on the right too. I expect they’re going to run with the debunked Vox story to do the MBF on this.

There are some progressive anti-vaxxer types but I agree with you, the movement at heart is a libertarian movement and Ron/Rand Paul’s statements on the issue pretty much illustrate the mindset which is they don’t want the government telling them what to do with their bodies and hey that’s great——————-except Ron and Rand are ignoring that these vaccines are for contagious diseases and the fact that Ron/Rand Paul do want the government involved when it comes to women being able to control their own bodies.

Right, the left overlap comes in with the mistrust of big corporations. Now that said and despite Vox’s attempt to spin otherwise, the difference between the left and right here is that mainstream left wing candidates aren’t pandering to anti-vaxxers while mainstream right wing ones are.

I wish I could have a relative to see it in but here’s the thing. I don’t blame my ASD on vaccines. None of my siblings have vaccines and of all the people in my HS class that I graduated with that had ASD. The only other person with it was someone born on the opposite side of the country. I get that it’s tough for parents with children with autism not being able to understand the cause of what makes their child different but the scapegoating of vaccines, vaccines that have saved literally millions of lives isn’t the answer and it doesn’t help at all that you have celebrities with no medical training at all like Jenny McCarthy leading the charge.

Endangering the Herd

The case for suing parents who don’t vaccinate their kids—or criminally charging them.

slate.com

Generally, it would seem that rather than suing the parents of an unvaccinated child, the parents of the child who contracted the disease from another would have to sue the school district, or other public facility, that allowed an un-vaccinated, sick child into the facility.

This would appear to be a decent case for requiring full vaccination records for any child attending public schools. Sometimes, push must come to shove.

Well, as I’ve said before I regard libertarianism as nothing more than a rebranding of anarchism, a marketing ploy. It cuts ‘libertarians’ off from anarchy’s rather awful history and it sets the debate to make it look like if you are arguing against ‘libertarianism’ then you are arguing against the very concept of liberty itself.

And of course, the anti-vax loon with the “pure children” who CNN trotted out for their MBF moment, is a “paleo cardiologist” (whatever the fuck that is) who, along with his chiropractor wife, is known as the “Doctors Wolfson.” In 2004, I met the most amazing woman who would soon become my wife. Heather is a chiropractor and has a heavy focus on nutrition and healthy, chemical free living. Since meeting her, I have changed my whole life and medical practice style…We practice attachment parenting, eat organic food, and instill a natural lifestyle into our children. -

He claims to prevent and treat cardiovascular disease with good nutrition, not medicines, believes vaccines may be the cause of leukemia, has some very reasonable rates/

Initial 75 minute consultation: $750 (includes ECG)
Phone consultation: starting at $750 for 75 minutes

Doesn’t take insurance (but will advise you how to get reimbursed from your insurance company after he scams you)

full payment for your visit is due at the time of your appointment..you will be given documentation and instructions on how to submit the invoice to your insurance company for direct reimbursement.

Doesn’t take Medicare, but ALL DIAGNOSTIC TESTS ORDERED ON MEDICARE/MEDICAID PATIENTS ARE COVERED -

And, surprise, surprise—he and the lovely Heather peddle a whole line of supplements and skin care products.

You don’t treat cardiovascular disease with “nutrition” alone. I’ve never known a good diet that would totally lower my genetically inherited cholesterol level nor blood pressure, and while I don’t have heart disease, untreated conditions like those, plus diabetes, can lead to heart disease.

“There is absolutely no reason to get the shot,” said Crystal McDonald, whose 16-year-old daughter was one of 66 students sent home from Palm Desert High School for the next two weeks because they did not have full measles immunizations.

After researching the issue and reading information from a national anti-vaccine group, Ms. McDonald said she and her husband, a chiropractor, decided to raise their four children without vaccines.

The reason Autism rates are “skyrocketing” is that it’s a relatively new diagnosis and doctor’s are learning to diagnosis it better.

Having children later in life appears to increase the chance of a child having ASD, and being a premature birth or having low rate also increases the risk.

Also, “ASD commonly co-occurs with other developmental, psychiatric, neurologic, chromosomal, and genetic diagnoses. The co-occurrence of one or more non-ASD developmental diagnoses is 83%. The co-occurrence of one or more psychiatric diagnoses is 10%.”

The Center for Short-Lived Phenomena (CSLP) was an office at the Smithsonian Institution from 1968 to 1975[1] designed to assist Smithsonian scientists in studying unusual short-lived natural phenomena such as meteorite impacts, volcanic events, earthquakes, and unusual ecological events such as plagues, extinctions, fish rains, and the effects of oil spill events.[2]

With respect, Charles, I don’t see how it’s wrong to say that Obama was referring to a possible link between vaccines and autism when he called the science “inconclusive”. If he simply meant that we should do more research into the cause of autism, without regard to any connection to vaccines, then he wouldn’t have cited the importance of vaccination as a reason to do the research. That would have been a non sequitur.

360 BeachDem  Feb 2, 2015 3:56:13pm

And Scotty is working to pump up his foreign policy cred (from the hilarious Hunter at kos):

…prepare yourself for a chain of meaningless cliches so vapid the network had to duct-tape Walker to the chair to keep him from floating away.

[Scott Walker]: “Aggressively, we need to take the fight to ISIS and any other radical Islamic terrorists around the world… I think we need to have an aggressive strategy anywhere around the world.”
[ABC News host Martha Raddatz]: “But what does that mean? I don’t know what ‘aggressive strategy’ means.”

Walker: “Ultimately, we have to be prepared to put boots on the ground, if that’s what it takes.”

Raddatz: “U.S. boots on the ground in Syria?”

Walker: “Well, I don’t think that’s an immediate plan.”

Walker is in a bit of a tight spot here, because he has exactly zero foreign policy expertise or experience or even past professed interest; his most striking military victories have titles like the Battle of Singing Protesters vs. The Statehouse Lawn. There is little indication he could find Syria on a map, and his proposal of “boots on the ground” seems suspiciously like a phrase he read off a placemat.

My school system gave up on me when I was ten. The principal of my public school told my mom I was uneducable. He didn’t realize that at ten I knew what uneducable meant.

Why was I uneducable?

I have a motor control problem that makes cursive longhand almost impossible and even typing is tricky. Back then the only thing that mattered was written tests and questions not answered were wrong answers. So since I rarely got more than halfway through a test the conclusion was I didn’t know the answers. My teachers passed me but only because they knew what my problem was. To the official system I was barely literate.

The phrase I’ve come up to describe it is, “When I went to school there were only two types of students; normal and stupid. I wasn’t normal.”

People still wonder why I dropped out.

Immunizations- All adult citizens should have the legal right to conscientiously choose which vaccines are administered to themselves, or their minor children, without penalty for refusing a vaccine. We oppose any effort by any authority to mandate such vaccines or any medical database that would contain personal records of citizens without their consent.

“Juan, I thought you went Norte last week?”

“Tried, but that hardnosed coyote won’t take me to Texas until I get all my shots.”

“Sneaky, those gringos.”

a dishonest asshole who has proven willing to lie to advance his causes.

That phrase could be used to describe just about anyone in the modern conservative movement.

If my baby grandkid gets sick because of an anti-vaxxer, can I go beat the crap out of the parents?

Heck, can you run a public business and refuse entry to people and their children unless they show you immunization papers?

Sure, but NO SCHOOL WILL LET YOUR KID IN .

And no school should let those kids in.

Want to refuse vaccines for your kid? Fine. But the trade-off is that you have to homeschool your kid and keep them away from everyone else until they’re 18. Your special snowflake is not entitled to put everyone else at risk.

Interesting coming from an outfit whose members wanted to know the itineraries of the pets of those who were treated here for Ebola.

Sure!

In another case of caveat emptor, I purchased Mrs. Fish a used iPhone off of Amazon. I’ve had great success with doing similar things in the past; I had no reason to expect anything different this time. The phone I ordered was green. The box I received said “green” on the label. The phone I received was … definitely NOT green. Rather, it was pink. Retailer restocking FAIL.

Fairly sure you’re allowed to “stand your ground” when the health and safety of children are jeopardized.

The ironic part of the ZOMG DISEASED MESSICANS meme is that Mexico has a higher immunization rate than the United States.

It’s pretty much still that way. My dyslexic grandson dropped out of HS because he wasn’t considered “special needs” and he needed help. He still can’t read very well or write much, and that was about 2006. It’s one reason he likes computers—they don’t judge and he can muddle through. Schools give up on a lot of kids and when parents can’t just take off work to fight for their kids, and there are no advocates for them, it winds up affecting every one.

“Special needs” doesn’t mean they’re slow or mentally challenged, it means they’re just not getting the help they need in a specific way. People learn in a variety of ways, not just the cut and dried ones.

Ha.

And no wonder he quit practicing medicine. Got a far more lucrative gig, no doubt.

Made the mistake of scanning that.

Once again I ask myself, “What is it about so many professed conservative’s faces that makes me want to punch them? Is there some genetic cause? Did they all have the same great-grandparents who were also siblings?”

Just asking questions.
