Iran’s Supreme Leader says US foreign policy is ‘disintegrating’

Iran’s supreme leader reacts to Senate Letter
Middle East • Views: 48,951

Via Deustche Welt:

Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has accused US Republican senators of “deceit” for intending to scrap any nuclear deal once President Barack Obama’s term ends. Khamenei was reacting to a recent Republican letter…
…Referring to the Republicans written intention to override any Obama deal with Iran, Khamenei reportedly asked, “Isn’t this the ultimate degree of the collapse of political ethics and the US system’s internal disintegration?”

It seems that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, did not see the humor in what Senate Republicans are now trying to characterize as a “Light-Hearted, Cheeky” Joke. It’s painfully obvious that those same Senate Republicans are woefully ignorant of the fact that Iran is armed to the teeth with modern weapons, many of which are manufactured in Iran, and that shock and awe will not cause the Iranians to throw down their weapons and flee. In one careless and hubristic move the Republican Senators managed to not just shred the Constitutional separation of powers, they also managed to damage the credibility of this President and his successors in office in any negotiation.

That letter was addressed to the Iranian government, but it was mostly meant to pander to their base. That was all that mattered.

7 freetoken  Mar 12, 2015 7:44:57am

The GOP is running their political campaigns on the basis of xenophobia and with that comes the provincialism that keeps them from analyzing the world through a calculated eye.

Iran presents a complex dynamic for foreign policy because even though it is somewhat politically isolated by the US and American influenced nations, many nations in the world continue with tight relationships with it.

The GOP politicians count on their constituency not really caring about the rest of the world’s complex interactions. It’s just us-vs-them, good versus evil, you’re with us or you’re against us.

So these wingnuts Republicans and their “moderate” accomplices may have damaged or even destroyed these talks, but you can be sure that if Iran does indeed walk from the table because it doesn’t feel we can be trusted to honor any deal made, those same morons will declare that it’s further proof that Iran can’t be trusted.

As usual, the teahadists do not want President Obama to succeed. Recall, dubyah failed at containing Iran’s (and NK’s) nuclear programs and it appears President Obama might succeed. Thus, the teahadists are desperately trying to sabotage any possible deal because…well, because, they are sick fucking assholes that put party ahead of country.

Yeah, I guessed that from every wingnut now sneering about how the President is pursuing a deal as part of his “legacy,” that he’s going to take a “bad deal” just to say he made a deal with Iran.

Meanwhile, the reality is that their approach of “Keep tightening the screws until Iran gives us everything we want” didn’t work under Dubya and it won’t work going forward. But the wingnuts know that if they start beating the war drums again overtly, the public will turn on their asses in a New York minute. So they’ve gotta soft sell it, downplay the dangers of military action and overplay the odds of success. And most importantly, totally avoid addressing what the actual consequences of a military strike on Iran would result in.

19 ObserverArt  Mar 12, 2015 7:52:31am

The RWNJ base of the GOP will see this reaction by Khamenei as a good thing.

I can hear them saying “F the r@g head we should never have negotiated with them in the first place!” America doesn’t negotiate, we use guns and bombs to get our point across.

And then they will praise Tom Cotton and curse Obama. Well, they always curse Obama…that’s a given.

And of course, most of them forgot already that Saint Reagan already backdoored this country and cut a deal with Iranians.

Sigh.

In the GOP worldview, they’re the ones defending the Constitution and President Obama is the enemy they’re defending against. It’s all situational. Even though the facts run against them, the GOP will continue trotting this kind of BS on a daily basis.

Tactical officers surrounded a brick bungalow on Dade Avenue near Tiffin Avenue. The home is about four blocks west of the police department. Officers went in with dogs about 9:30 a.m. A neighbor said he saw police bring two people out of the home and heard talk of a third hiding in the attic.

Well I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison
And I went to pick her up in the rain
But before I could get to the station in the pick-up truck
She got runned over by a damned old train

Can’t effing win for losing. Emphasis mine:

Launched in 2006 - first in Kuwait after the approval of the state’s Ministry of Information, then in America and the rest of the world - The 99 was hailed as an exemplary model of inter-faith peace and tolerance by Barack Obama, and Dr Mutawa was invited to give two TED talks. He has since been featured in Forbes magazine, won prizes in the Gulf region and gained the approval of the Saudi state.

However, for some he is a defender not of peace but of profanity: ironically, he has hardline detractors in both America and the Arab world, though they hate him for opposing reasons. To US conservatives, he is a terrorist and a pawn of hardline Islam; to Islamist Arabs, he is a heretic and a pawn of the liberal West.

Both camps have, in the past decade, warned of the dangers of his creation and called for it to be banned. America’s God-squad even created enough moral panic about “radicalising children” to halt a Hollywood adaptation of The 99 - produced by Endemol and scripted by the teams behind Star Wars, X-Men and Spider-Man - from being shown in US cinemas or on its network television. (This leads Al-Mutawa to joke: “I have a fatwa from Fox News!”)

But now there is a more serious threat from within his home country. While the Kuwaiti government has endorsed his work, not everyone agrees with its message. In the past year, a Twitter campaign has accused him of being a blasphemer who should be brought to trial; and a legal case has been launched against him - not by the state, but by a fellow Kuwaiti suing him for heresy. (If he loses - and he firmly believes he won’t - he could face a prison sentence.) […]

independent.co.uk

As usual the extremists on both sides agree: God forbid there should be any inter-faith peace and tolerance.

Excuse me while I go into the bedroom and scream into a pillow. *SIGH*

One of my kids lived out a CW song. His wife took the kid and ran off with a preacher’s son. Within days his Movie Gallery IT job vaporized, and while he was packing out of their rented double-wide to move home, some son of a bitch ran over his dog.

I was the only person in the joint wearing a polo shirt, and when I bellied up the guy next to me said “what are you a f#%?” But all i had to do was put down two whiskey shots and chase them with a beer before I was best buds with them tho.

One backwoods bar not far from where I sit now used to be a Punch Palace. Legendary. Probably about 78 or 79 and the joint was jumping. No exaggeration, there was a fist fight about every 15 minutes. Over everything you can imagine. I was at the front bar, which had steel piping separating it from the dance floor. Two guys just start wailing away on each other right in the middle of it. This girl runs out and as she’s screaming “Don’t hurt him” she gets slammed right in the head with a right cross. Down she goes. Now she’s on the floor between them half conscious and they are just firing away, kicking her in the process. I slip under the piping, go over and drag her away by her arm. I help her to her feet. She’s punchy, and when she comes too, she just races back onto the floor where she jumps into the middle and catches another shot to the head. Down she goes again and stays there until the bouncers, who were escorting another battered patron out come in and break it up. You worked that bar you earned your money.

They may be racist rednecks, but they know their guns. And if you say, “I’m just a lady trying to figure out if any of you boys could make a shot like that,” you get all kinds of interest!

Not one of them said yes. They said it’s theoretically possible but the guy would have to be a freakish shooter. The best response was, “Damn police chief in a news conference said 3 shots were fired @125 yards away. Then says he believes its a handgun. Was Jerry Miculek in ferguson last night?”

So, the gentlemen down at the corner store of the Internet feel this is a highly unlikely scenario. I am more than content to wait for facts, but i can tell when something is awfully hinky.

the “Just send in US Bombers” contingent of military hawks/ fantasy role playing game Republicans (using real live people) can’t seem to comprehend what a mess Iran can create in its backyard.

A few hundred wooden barrel mines is all it would take to shut down shipping in the Persian Gulf. Insurance companies would cancel policies immediately. No shipping concern will operate without insurance. Iranian missiles can rain down on any city and base within 1000 miles. Iran has BUK Russian anti-electronic warfare platforms that can hijack radio transmissions from drone operators (one of which is rumored to have tricked and brought down the Sentinel stealth drone a few years ago).

Russian and Chinese services would be all too happy to have Iran used as a proxy test ground for anti-stealth and Special Ops technology using US lives and equipment as the guinea pigs. Idiots.

Agreed. Although I think a more terrifying thought is that a huge chunk of the people don’t even believe there is a problem in Ferguson. It’s not so much “Ya, I know there’s a problem, but exposing it will cause much more damage/suffering.” It’s “Ok, I’ve read the report. And?”

Under my bill, the state is not allowing or disallowing same-sex marriage. It is simply leaving it up to the clergy.”

Rand Paul doesn’t think the Middle East is unstable enough yet.

But on Wednesday, two weeks after telling a crowd of conservatives that Republicans should give up the concept of nation building abroad, Paul called on the United States to ship arms to the Kurds with a promise to build them a nation: Kurdistan.

“Part of the problem is the Kurds aren’t getting enough arms,” Paul told Breitbart News. “The Kurds are the best fighters. The arms are going through Baghdad to get to the Kurds and they’re being siphoned off and they’re not getting what they need. I think any arms coming from us or coming from any European countries ought to go directly to the Kurds.”

He then endorsed redrawing the borders of Iraq and Syria to form a new country, exposing as he did the gaps in his understanding of the region.

This being after he adovcated religious genocide.

The problem is that the sectors of the economy which product mid to high wage income, have not recovered from the 2008 banking crisis.

The main sectors of the economy which have thrived are those producing low-wage jobs which is what makes it very difficult from even working people to make a living. Coupled with the disincentive that a person can fare better on welfare than they can to work, and the picture becomes clearer. Yes, people need to work, but the economy isn’t the rising tide lifting all the ships that it needs to be either.

Nailed it.

Heh true, really I’d like to hear from Rush’s fan one positive contribution he has made in his years on the airwaves? Is it popularizing a term that likens feminists to one of the most evil regimes in history? Or is that time when he with wit that rivaled Carlin called a 13 year old girl a dog? Or maybe it was the time before Barack Obama even became president that he hoped he would fail. Rush is a pathetic loser as all the other right wing talk show hosts who have no original thoughts of their own other than Liberals bad and stupid hurr hurr, I’m one of you but I live like a king off of your ignorance.

In a bizarre and depressing exchange I had yesterday at Law Prof (and frequent TV talking head) Jonathan Turley’s blog with xenophobic mass murder enthusiast Pogo Hears a Who, I coined the term “Genocidal Troll” for him. This was after he advocated the mass murder of the world’s Islamic population and the destruction of Mecca, along with summary street lynchings of Islamic terror suspects. Apparently, he is also a practicing MD.

The Genocidal Troll accused me of numerous ad hominem logical errors and then comlained I violated the blog’s civility terms.

This being after he adovcated religious genocide.

The term seems to have become a meme on the blog. My work is done…

re: #55 Decatur Deb

The article isn’t referencing the Hatch Act, which doesn’t seem to apply to uniformed members anyway. If she was on active duty, Article 88 of UCMJ would apply, but since she is National Guard, she would be outside the jurisdiction unless on active duty orders at the time of the signing. Which she wasn’t. The article actually references the Iowa Code of Military Justice, and a rough look says that the argument has merit.

The obvious problem being that in the context of her being a member of the Republican party, almost any public statement she makes against the Democratic party could be seen as violating the law. I don’t think anyone is going to attempt to take her commission for being a partisan hack.

One column he wrote at Harvard:

“…Couples who choose a covenant marriage undergo counseling before they marry and can divorce only with fault, defined as abandonment, physical abuse, adultery or conviction of a capital crime. State legislator Tony Perkins, the author of the law (and an active member in PK), expects covenant marriages will soon account for half of all new marriages in Louisiana. Many states are expected to follow Louisiana’s lead.

Presumably, women should encourage such developments since divorce leads to their “greatest fear in life.” And most women probably do support them, but not the putative potentates of feminism.”

“Feminists who allegedly speak for women should attack divorce, not its effects. If men have easy access to divorce, many will choose it thoughtlessly. They may not gain true happiness with their new trophy wives, but they certainly will not slide into the material indigence and emotional misery that awaits most divorced women. If restrained, however, men can fulfill women’s deepest hopes. They can learn that personal happiness comes from the desire to devote and sacrifice oneself to one’s beloved.”

It wasn’t only about girl empowerment, it also subversively mocked the earlier Disney formula of Prince/Princess=instant love at first sight!

The villain is not revealed until the last 10 minutes (clever) and Anna ends up saving herself instead of being rescued by Sven (about time)

It was an over due and welcome departure from the princess in peril formula, and the themes of self realization apply to anybody (which is why the movie was an especially big hit with GLBT audiences)

For those of you unfamiliar with Hagee’s Cornerstone Church, it’s in a very wealthy area on the outskirts (farthest northern reaches) of San Antonio. It’s practically within spitting distance of the local country club (about 1/3 of a mile away, as the crow flies). Here’s a video advertising the latter—at about 21 seconds you’ll see an aerial view of the area that’ll give you a good idea of the type of neighborhood I’m talking about:

Oh, and just across the parkway from the country club is Ronald Regan High School (the middle school is named Barbara Bush). I kid you not. I’m pretty sure it’s been a VERY long time since Hagee has been anywhere near a poor person.

Here is the church on Google Maps. The Club at Sonterra is just north of it at the tip of E. Sonterra Blvd. That’s Hagee’s “base”.

I did not like Princess and the Frog because the workaholic heroine falls for a lazy moocher.

It’s practically within spitting distance of the local country club (about 1/3 of a mile away, as the crow flies).

Plan:
1. Join the country club.
2. Spit at Hagee’s church while at the club because the distance allows.
3. Make the crow fly there and shit all over the place.

Brave was a bit much for young audiences. Since I am of Scottish descent, however, I absolutely had to see the movie. I did really like it, although I would not put it at the top of the PIXAR pantheon.

I still need to see Brave. I like Kelly MacDonald. A lot of people hated her character on Boardwalk but I couldn’t help but to think a little of my own Irish great grandmother in the character though she was of course very different from the Mrs. Schroder-Thompson character so no guys my g-gma did not know Arnold Rothstein.

It wasn’t only about girl empowerment, it also subversively mocked the earlier Disney formula of Prince/Princess=instant love at first sight!

“The Princess marries some guy she just met” trope actually isn’t as prevalent in Disney princess movies as people think. Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Ariel do (and Sleeping Beauty was actually an arranged marriage set up years before). Belle spends months with Beast before they hook up (of course, he’s an abusive kidnapper, so maybe even more disturbing), Jasmine doesn’t marry Aladdin until two sequels later, Pocahontas marries a completely different guy in the sequel. Rapunzel marries Flynn years later. Merida and Elsa don’t even have boyfriends at the end of their movies and Anna is just starting to date Christoff by the end. Tiana is a special case, because she thought she was going to have to spend the rest of her life as a frog when she married Naveen.

The problem with the letter isn’t that it broke the rules. The problem with the letter is that it’s gutless.

“…The ringleader of the senatorial troublemakers, freshman Tom Cotton of Arkansas, wants us to believe he and his colleagues have seen through Barack Obama’s dangerous willingness to capitulate to the mullahs in Tehran, and that they alone are tough enough to derail the bad deal the president is prepared, and even eager, to make.

But really, who’s wimpier? A party so terrified by the prospect of normalizing relations with a vastly less formidable foreign power after 36 years of rancor and distrust that it engages in unprecedented acts of diplomatic sabotage, thereby crippling the president’s ability to conduct foreign policy? Or that president himself, who believes that after those 36 years of rancor and distrust this vastly less formidable foreign power can be negotiated into delaying its nuclear ambitions for a decade?”

I can’t honestly remember the first one I saw in theaters. The Bill and Ted movie along with the Alvin and Chipmunks movie where they travel the world in competition with the Chipettes are two I can remember renting from Errols a lot and also the awful Babe Ruth bioepic with John Goodman.

First movie I remember seeing was Battle of the Bulge. Loved it when I was ten. Now I can’t stand it. Man, it sucks so bad now.

It did make me love Panzerlied until this very day.
