The world turns:

Croatia Says 27,000 Migrants and Refugees Have Entered

Croatian police say about 27,000 migrants have entered the country since the surge started several days ago.

Police said Sunday that they are still expecting many more migrants to arrive from Serbia in the coming days. They say authorities are setting up tents for migrants to find shelter from rain and cold.

Migrants hoping to reach Western Europe started going through Croatia last Wednesday after Hungary pushed them away from its border with Serbia.

All this monsoonal flow and ocean heat did bring us some unsual rain last week. And we have a chance of rain on Monday too (some on radar now.) We are however still very short of the norm of yearly rain total.

Maybe I don’t want to like it. I don’t know.

What I do know is that I don’t like shows where the protagonists are too stupid. It’s difficult more me to sustain interest in a show if I can’t find some character that grabs my attention, in a positive way.

I am not going to touch the issue of morality…but it does remind us that DC belongs to a class of people in the UK who feel themselves exempt from the moral standards they apply to the rest of society.

As a student, he also belonged to a “dining society” that used to go out and trash restaurants and then have their parents foot the bill for damages.

As are most of his Tory compatriots. Buggery and sexual deviancy are the norm in their initiation rituals. But these are not so much about sex as they are about establishing the social pecking order.

From Teh Wikipedia:

From the age of seven, Cameron was educated at two independent schools: at Heatherdown School in Winkfield (near Ascot) in Berkshire, which counts Prince Andrew and Prince Edward among its alumni. Due to good academic grades, Cameron entered its top academic class almost two years early.[15] At the age of thirteen, he went to Eton College in Berkshire, following his father and elder brother.[16] His early interest was in art. Six weeks before taking his O-Levels he was caught smoking cannabis.[2] He admitted the offence and had not been involved in selling drugs, so he was not expelled, but was fined, prevented from leaving school grounds, and given a “Georgic” (a punishment which involved copying 500 lines of Latin text).[17]

Cameron passed 12 O-Levels and then studied three A-levels: History of art, History, in which he was taught by Michael Kidson, and Economics with Politics. He obtained three ‘A’ grades and a ‘1’ grade in the Scholarship Level exam in Economics and Politics.[18] The following autumn he passed the entrance exam for the University of Oxford, where he was offered an exhibition.[19]

Many of the themes being sounded by Republican candidates are nothing new. In 1992, journalist Pat Buchanan challenged President George H W Bush for the Republican presidential nomination. Like Trump, Buchanan called for sealing the borders to immigrants. He also suggested erecting high protective tariffs to protect American manufacturing jobs, ending foreign aid and withdrawing American troops from aboard.

At the time Buchanan sounded like an isolated, discontented voice. With the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1989, a new world order seemed an inevitable next step in the long movement toward democracy, universal human rights and a world without sharp borders and high fences.

Buchanan’s views no longer seem so outlandish.

The Guardian picks on on North Carolina’s bizarro prudery:

Teen prosecuted as adult for having naked images - of himself - on phone

A teenage boy in North Carolina has been prosecuted for having nude pictures of himself on his own mobile phone. The young man, who is now 17 but was 16 at the time the photos were discovered, had to strike a plea deal to avoid potentially going to jail and being registered as a sex offender.

Experts condemned the case as ludicrous. The boy was, however, punished by the courts, and had to agree to be subject to warrantless searches by law enforcement for a year, in addition to other penalties.

The young man was also named in the media and suffered a suspension as quarterback of his high school football team while the case was being resolved.

Cormega Copening, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was prosecuted as an adult under federal child pornography felony laws, for sexually exploiting a minor. The minor was himself.

None of those ideas are realistic in the least. We live in an interconnected, inter-dependent global economy now. If PaleoPat really wanted to isolate the USA entirely, he would have to forbid any US manufacturer from outsourcing to offshore factories, buying foreign components and hiring foreign workers. There’s no way American business would accept those restrictions, even if they made any economic sense at all.

As for our military presence abroad, we could argue that the mere presence of American troops and naval vessels keeps most would-be trouble-makers at bay — North Korea, Al Qaeda and Daesh being notable exceptions. Besides, where would we put all those servicemen and women and the equipment? What jobs would they have?

Anyone who thinks Pat Buchanan is worth paying attention to needs his head examined.

That’s an impressive high-school resume. I struggled to get 9 O-levels and 5 Scottish Highers (1 year of study rather than the two years an ‘A’ level takes). Getting all three A-levels as ‘A’ grades is also impressive. It’s the sort of performance that would put someone at a US high school in line for a top university entry and scholarships.

For the USians among us the O-levels are the first graded exams taken in British schools, usually at the end of year 4 or in your terms freshman senior high year. Scottish Higher grades are taken in year 5, A-levels in an optional sixth year (aka six-form college) although a promising student can skip a year and do A-levels early.

Sure he was taught at a school which regularly produces top-grade results for these exams and tutored on a one-to-one basis but it still takes a lot of native smarts to get those sorts of grades. The O-level and A-level exams are independently set and marked but Oxford and other top universities hold separate entrance exams for most subjects as well as requiring an entrance interview, essays etc.

At least in the UK our political leaders don’t come from families with “compounds” like the Kennedies and the Bushes (or indeed the Koreshes). Maggie Thatcher was famously a grocer’s daughter but smart and ambitious, John Major famously ran away from the circus to become an accountant (his father was an entertainer). Gordon Brown was a son of the Manse, traditionally an academically-oriented family structure but not wealthy.

The British political structure filters for intellectually gifted types with a ferocious work ethic and ambition but family names and connections are less important than they used to be. It’s been over 150 years since a father and son became Prime Ministers, for example. The PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics) degree has become a marker of someone who’s making a bid for a political life generally, a bit like in the US where military service of some sort is a favoured resume checkmark for would-be elected officials.

Scottish ‘hate preacher’ has diatribe shut down by a bagpiper

LONDON — A man who has been described as a “hate preacher” had his public lecture brought to a halt in Scotland by a man playing the bagpipes.

The “preacher” was delivering an anti-gay message, claiming that same-sex marriage is ruining the country, the Daily Record reported — however he was soon drowned out with a rendition of the traditional song “Scotland the Brave.”

Onlookers who cheered the musician’s actions filmed the footage from above, before a police van arrived on the scene. No arrests were made.

More of my thoughts on FTWD:

It took me several hours to get through the latest episode, as I’ve already decided I can’t dig the characters enough to care about what happens to them.

Here’s what the writers want us to believe about these characters:

They never listen to radio (though there was one on in the truck in the first episode, for some reason it disappears.)

They never watch TV (in southern Californian?)

Even though they have smartphones with video, apparently they never continued to look at them after the initial zombie video.

And so on.

Now I realize the human element the writers are going for is that the blended family is numb to their feelings and the world, etc. But the showrunners have gone way overboard with this. Remember, the lead male was an literature specialist and the lead female a school therapist/psychologist. No matter how much they might wish to escape the realities of their (pre-zombie) life, I can’t believe such people would be as dull as presented.

As for the actors - I like Ruben Blades. The rest I find mis-cast.

I was rooting for the dog, until it got eaten last episode.

The producers are cashing in on TWD brand but not delivering a good product. It’s just run-of-the-mill acting with below average (for a drama) script.

The way the Labor Party is fighting internally over in the UK, David Cameron is in no danger of losing his seat over something that happened in college:

Labour shadow minister savages Corbyn over Iraq apology and ‘complete nonsense’ claim that Blair is a war criminal

Labour’s ‘Mayor’ savages Corbyn: Party star Khan damns leader over anti-Semitism

The latter story is particularly good from my perspective as it features a Muslim (Sadiq Khan) tearing a strip off of a socialist (Jeremy Corbyn) for being anti-Semitic. In so doing, Khan puts the lie to Ben Carson quite nicely.

Of course there is another side of the story: The Shadow Chancellor and the Labor candidate for mayor of London are letting that city’s financial industry know they are against Corbyn and in favor of growth policies, and maintaining order. This conservative sees such a message as a good thing.

As a scientist, Dawkins really shouldn’t be falling for this kind of shit. His job is to look at evidence and come to a conclusion based on that, not coming up with a conclusion and making up evidence to support it. You would think that would inform his approach to life, but I guess he’s so brilliant that he never has to check himself for bias.

There’s probably photos of the lynching and they wanted those gone. Few modern white people would want to the world to view a photo of an ancestor seen in the act of committing murder.

By admitting it happened, the injustice is confessed as honor requires, but getting rid of the photographic evidence keeps people from feeling shamed themselves.

Note: I am not saying I approve of such destruction of records. I do not so approve, but I understand why the people who deleted the records did so. But true honor requires a full accounting for the past if possible.

— Gov. Bobby Jindal

I think Bobby means he didn’t allow LA to set up its own health exchange and he didn’t expand Medicaid. But fortunately his citizens can still access the federal network and those with pre-existing conditions can now get healthcare. I know that’s hard for Bobby to understand.

re: #87 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

LA has among the worst health care outcomes/systems in the nation. Among the highest rates of uninsureds, and that rests entirely on Jindal’s refusal to expand Medicaid.

It is costing his state in money and lives. For all his talk of fiscal responsibility, he’s burdening those who are least able to afford health care with additional costs.

At the same time, Jindal’s attempted even more burden shifting, including an attempt to eliminate the personal income tax and replace it with a sales tax. That effort foundered last year, but it shows he’s all about catering to the haves.

Ryan, as a Catholic, has nicely timed the announcement of the summit to coincide with the arrival of Pope Francis who brings with him his message of service to the poor. The forum could be an opportunity to wrestle with issues that don’t get discussed much on the campaign trail—what role individual responsibility plays in poverty and how much of it is the result of systemic forces. Also, as budget chairman, Ryan proposed some modifications to the safety net that his critics claim would devastate the poor. If the presidential candidates come to engage with these topics, it will perhaps interrupt for a brief moment the campaign circus

Regulator turns down Google’s appeal on global ‘right to be forgotten’

A French regulator on Monday rejected Google’s appeal of a decision that requires it to remove links from its search results — no matter where they show up in the world.

The decision is related to last year’s “right to be forgotten” ruling in which a European court said that citizens could request that links about them be taken down from search results.

The Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés (CNIL), France’s privacy regulator, has asked Google to apply the decisions related to European users around the world — meaning that a link removed in Europe would also be removed from search results on America’s google.com.

[…]

A Google spokesperson said that the search engine has “worked hard to implement the Right to be Forgotten ruling thoughtfully and comprehensively in Europe, and we’ll continue to do so.” But the spokesperson said that the company still disagreed “as a matter of principle” with the thought of a single country’s data regulator making a decision to restrict the content that people in other countries see in their search result.

Thousands of requests have been made of Google under the “right to be forgotten” ruling since it was handed down last year. The search engine has received 66,707 requests from people with a relationship to France alone. It has received 318,269 in total.

[…]

The biggest secrets about what happened at Attica in 1971 are still kept hidden.

The original five were called the “Declaration and 5 Demands of Attica.” They included such things as these:

“1. We want complete amnesty, meaning freedom from all and any physical, mental and legal reprisals.

2. We want now, speedy and safe transportation out of confinement to a non-imperialistic country.

3. We demand that the Federal Government intervene, so that we will be under direct Federal Jurisdiction.

4. We want the Governor and the Judiciary, namely Constance B. Motley, to guarantee that there will be no reprisals and we want all factions of the media to articulate this.”
The 5th item was a list of people they wanted to come and negotiate for them, and then it ended with this:

“We guarantee the safe passage of all people to and from this institution. We invite all the people to come here and witness this degradation so that they can better know how to bring this degradation to an end. This is what we want.”

New Book: “Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy” Heather Ann Thompson

In the early morning I sometimes flip on Way Too Early on MSNBC to catch the first wave of big stories if I am awake. What happens next is Morning Joe comes on and I will listen to him ramble on for a few minutes to see what he will be pissed off today regarding Hillary/Obama/Liberals/Progressives. Then I watch the local news for weather and big local stories.

This morning Joke Scarborough was raging on about a report about US Soldiers in Afghanistan allowing Afghan soldiers to rape boys. I was in and out, not quite awake yet, and I think they said this is some kind of a custom, but don’t quote that. He then got onto who would allow this and he wondered if it went all the way to the top (Obama).

Anyone know anything about this? I’m going to do some searching later, but the LGFers are pretty good at finding news fast and mentioning it here.

Yeah, it’s a sad, sad thing.

All I can keep thinking is Jimmy Carter’s TED TALK.

He’s not the only one.

The video’s caption: While discussing 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed’s arrest for bringing a clock to school, Bill Maher suggested the school was justified in its actions.

It seems to me that ‘Clockhazi’ has induced some serious asshattery, both from those who dislike Islam and those who dislike religion in general.

I did see that with Maher. I don’t think you can say it’s anti religion people in general because of Dawkins and Maher. Two does not make a pattern.

Resilience: An Update PTSD RESEARC QUARTERLY

Most individuals are resilient and able to successfully deal with
a wide range of life stressors and traumas. In fact, Masten (2001)
coined the term “ordinary magic” to point out that resilience is
not rare. Humans are endowed with natural protective systems
that help them adapt to change and adversity. However, in order
for these protective systems to develop and operate effectively
individuals need basic social and material resources, and, ideally,
healthy family and community environments (see discussion in
Southwick, Bonanno, Masten, Panter-Brick & Yehuda, 2014).

AND:

PTSD for Children 6 Years and Younger
this one is really interesting, IMHO
What types of trauma do young children experience?

Young children are exposed to many types of traumatic experiences, placing them at risk for PTSD. These include:
Abuse (7)
Witnessing interpersonal violence (8)
Motor vehicle accidents (9)
Experiences of natural disasters (10)
Conditions of war (11)
Dog bites
Invasive medical procedures (12)

Unfortunately, this is a pattern.

Drug Goes From $13.50 a Tablet to $750, Overnight

Specialists in infectious disease are protesting a gigantic overnight increase in the price of a 62-year-old drug that is the standard of care for treating a life-threatening parasitic infection.

The drug, called Daraprim, was acquired in August by Turing Pharmaceuticals, a start-up run by a former hedge fund manager. Turing immediately raised the price to $750 a tablet from $13.50, bringing the annual cost of treatment for some patients to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Turing’s price increase is not an isolated example. While most of the attention on pharmaceutical prices has been on new drugs for diseases like cancer, hepatitis C and high cholesterol, there is also growing concern about huge price increases on older drugs, some of them generic, that have long been mainstays of treatment.

Although some price increases have been caused by shortages, others have resulted from a business strategy of buying old neglected drugs and turning them into high-priced “specialty drugs.”

Cycloserine, a drug used to treat dangerous multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, was just increased in price to $10,800 for 30 pills from $500 after its acquisition by Rodelis Therapeutics. Scott Spencer, general manager of Rodelis, said the company needed to invest to make sure the supply of the drug remained reliable. He said the company provided the drug free to certain needy patients.

And the same people bitching about health care cost exploding will continue to laud the free market.

I use an old school safety razor. the down side is I typically have to go to a pharmacy (Rite Aid or Walgreens) to get new blades - or I have to go to a specialty shop to get the high quality ones. But even with the off brand ones, I get a better shave than I ever did with an electric or multi-blade thing that I used in the past.

I’ve also recently bought a vintage straight razor, but need to have it sharpened before I can use it. It probably won’t be my regular razor, but I love barber shop shaves and I figured a straight razor can be nice a couple of times a month when I want to be very clean.

As Vicious has pointed out, this is a blood libel spread by anti choice extremists in an effort to destroy PP and eliminate access to health care for millions of women who rely on PP for their care.

It affects not only those who rely on PP for their birth control or reproductive health, but general health screening and care.

The functional result of the GOP efforts to defund would be higher health care costs for everyone as delayed health care is higher costs for treating ailments that could be treated for less at earlier stages (like say before a cancer metastasizes when a lumpectomy can prevent a cancer’s spread versus a mastectomy etc.) Or providing a HPV vaccine can prevent cervical cancer and other STDs, when the cost for treating those diseases can really climb fast.

The other point is that the result they’re seeking is yet another example of privilege. If PP is destroyed, it’s poor women who will lose their reproductive choices. Middle class and wealthy women will always be able to find reproductive health services.

True. But I give her a bit of credit for trying to get the point out that PP is not an abortion mill. I am not sure, but I think she also tried to mention they do not sell baby parts, so she at least acknowledge they do abortions but they are not profiting on them which is the main scare tactic.

If she were a Catholic like Rick Santorum, she’d be all for defunding no questions asked.

AMERICAN SOCIALISTS BECAME ANARCHISTS — 9/21/15

“At some point in 1884 the militant socialists of Chicago began identifying themselves as anarchists. This caused confusion among observers as well as among members of the International, because the movement’s leader, August Spies, insisted he remained a follower of Marx, and not of Marx’s anarchist enemy, [the Russian revolutionary anarchist Mikhail] Bakunin. It was true that Spies and his Chicago comrades had given up hope of finding a peaceful path to socialism via elections and legislative changes that they had broken decisively with their former comrades in the Socialistic Labor Party. Yet the Internationals continued to label their publications socialist in 1885, because they adhered to Marx’s belief that capitalism would be destroyed by its own contradictions and by the inevitable emergence of a class-conscious movement of workers prepared to abolish private property along with the forms of government that sanctioned and protected it.

“The Chicago militants thought of themselves as socialists of the anarchist type — that is, as revolutionaries who believed in liberating society from all state control, whether capitalist or socialist… . .

This bullshit regarding the price gouging for this drug has some serious implications for public health. Antibiotic resistent TB is a particularly alarming threat to all of us. By denying effective treatment by pricing it beyond reach for even a single patient can have disastrous effects making it an imperative for the law to step in where the free market won’t.

It’s for real and it’s called bacha bazi (don’t google it unless you have a barf bag handy, and rest assured the usual haters will claim that it’s an established “Islamic” practice—it is not). When host Megyn Kelly asked Carson if he believes that a Muslim county clerk should have a right to “refuse a marriage license to Muslims who want to marry Christians,” the GOP presidential candidate said that Christians can cite their religious beliefs to refuse marriage licenses because “this is a Judeo-Christian nation in the sense that a lot of our values and principles are based on our Judeo-Christian faith.”

So a Muslim clerk can’t cite his or her religious beliefs when acting as a public official responsible for upholding the law but Christian ones can?

re: #302 Fourth Football of the Apocalypse

the problem with both monotheism and theocracy is that there is no place for other religious beliefs within their systems. For someone like Carson, who is essentially a Christianist, allowing the possibility that the religious beliefs of another religion (or even another sect of Christianity) can be accommodated is the first brick in that wall between church and state. They can’t abide that possibility, so it is religious freedom for them but not for anyone else.

Dawkins is a smart guy asking smart-guy questions who is totally unable to understand that it’s a problem if white supremacists are asking the same questions for different reasons.

It’s a vile anti-Muslim Kahanist site. I’ll just point out that the terrorist Joshua Goldberg was writing for it.

It should be noted that usually the Christian translations introduce Christian bias into the OT (starting with the name “OT”), so it would still be a Christian book.

My brother was asking the same questions, and I had a hard time convincing him that his questions were pretty much irrelevant.

No one is born Christian. The only way Christians can reproduce is by active recruitment into the lifestyle. They make it a habit to target family members, as well as going after the weak and vulnerable members of society.

Price gouging. Pure and simple.

There’s no reason for that drug to see a price jump like that other than pure unadulterated greed.

The company is still making a bunch of money on the drug, but they’ve now priced it at a level that makes it prohibitively expensive for people who need it to take it - or causes doctors to switch to other drugs that may not be as good at treating the ailment - indirectly increasing costs.

There is so little transparency on drug pricing, and companies play all kinds of games on drugs as well - compounding them so as to extend patent protections with slightly new formulations or taking a drug about to go off patent with another one so as to extend the protections further - keeping the costs high for the ultimate user.

And those costs get passed on to the user.
