Massive Fail: Stupidest Man on the Internet, Jim Hoft, Falls for Another Hoax, Identifies Wrong Man as Oregon Shooter

Nobody will ever accuse Jim Hoft, the fabled Stupidest Man on the Internet, of checking his facts before going big with a story: REPORT=- Toby Reynolds Identified as Umpqua College Shooter - the Gateway Pundit.

Via Online reports—-

Toby Reynolds was identified today as the Umpqua College shooter.

Reynolds killed 12 people before being shot by police.

The shooting occurred on a gun-free campus with unarmed security guards.

Bzzzt! Wrong again, Jimbo!

Hoft has been taken in by the trolls of 4chan. According to NBC reporter Tom Winter, the person Hoft identified as the killer, Toby Reynolds, is alive and has contacted NBC.

This is just one more fail in the voluminous annals of Jim Hoft failures. I wonder if he’ll bother to correct it this time?

Like the vast majority of Americans, I knew nothing at all about Kevin McCarthy a week ago today. Now he is quickly becoming a fumble mouth for the ages:

He claims “no one questions Trey [Gowdy’s] integrity”. I know I do, and I am fairly certain I am not alone.

Bottom line: McCarthy makes Boehner sound like Benjamin Disraeli.

Gee, it was another white dude in his 20’s.

/shock

In this culture, mass shootings are a feature, not a bug.

Speaking as a former Angry White Loser who also owns firearms and has been on both sides of the MAH GUNZZZ phenomenon, I think we’re suffering the effects of a trans-generational masculinity crisis. There’s a lot of angry, fucked-up dudes out there who are feeding their hate with the internet. Reference points are being lost, the old world is slipping away, and there’s nothing to do but Crusade.

I see a twice-divorced suspenders-wearing fatass in his 50’s screaming and jerking his knees about his GUNZ, and I see a broke, friendless-except-for-4chan little misery-weasel in his 20’s buying a rifle to murder a bunch of people at random, and I see the same guy, separated only by testosterone levels and impulse control. It’s the same mental disease: Loserdom. Guys with no Status.

Nobody respects the chubby white Chrischun man anymore!
Nobody pays attention to me, the girls only go for the jocks!
The world has gone to shit! Fucking liberals! Fucking women! Fucking feminists! Fucking Muslims! Fucking everybody who isn’t me and doesn’t feel my pain! Soon they will, and I’ll be famous!

*blam blam blam blam blam*

The gun-lovers have one thing right: the hardware is just a tool. Along with access to tools, we should be looking at real questions of why American culture nurtures or permits such a pervasive, unassailable, elephant-in-the-room desire to USE those tools, over and over and over again, against crowds of vulnerable people.

Somewhere not too deep in the folds of Scotch-Irish tempers and Germanic resentment, right in the very DNA of White Guy Heritage, is an impulse to destroy others on zero-to-little-provocation, as an acceptable course of action. We build football teams around it, we form political parties based on it, Donald Trump is raking in 30% of the GOP on it, we spend billions of our own sweat money bombing people we’ve never met over it, and god help you if you suggest we stop.

We need to have a deep-shit beers-at-the-table serious sit-down about our national identity, but it can’t happen, because the very people who need the talking-to are the ones that just refuse to fucking listen.

I’ve lived in Colorado my whole life, and I’ve witnessed some truly awful mass murders with guns. In public schools. In Chuckie Cheese restaurants. In movie theaters. In churches. To say I’m numb to these things may be an understatement. I still feel disbelief and sadness with these things, they happen too often though. We have a problem in this country. We have a gun problem.

+1 and faved.
Careful, you touch on the issue of “why are we so stupidly tragically violent at one another?”. Many want to take these guns and mental health issues as wholly separate and mutually irreconcilable. Some insist this urge is unknowable. Beyond resolution. Which fits media memes and soundbites quite well but I strongly disagree. We need to address every facet. Gun laws, better mental health resources, healthier attitudes that would shun rather than celebrate the violent.

Mentally violent at some extreme becomes criminally violent and the gun makes one man child as big and strong as ten. The insecure sense this and are drawn as the proverbial moth to the fire.

Harold Cook, A Texas gun owner, trying to reason with the unreasoning in 2013:

Nobody’s Going to Take Your Guns Away
Why we should get a grip on all this Second Amendment Hysteria

“…Sensible gun restrictions wouldn’t cause us to turn our backs on our glorious history, nor would they destroy the Bill of Rights. The modest legislative proposals currently under consideration are not the civil rights issue of our day. But they might help keep a lot of school children and their teachers safer.

I recognize that we Texans don’t like being told what to do—I don’t like being told what to do either. But in the unlikely event Congress musters up the cojones to pass the gun violence proposals currently under consideration, we Texans will likely discover that we’ll still be doing pretty much what we’ve always done, in the same way we’ve always done it.”

We’ve already agreed as a country that there are limits on this whole “right to bear arms” thing. We don’t let people own fully automatic weapons (with very few exceptions). Things like grenades and rockets and artillery are pretty much right out.

Hell, most people agree that there are points where even guns should be excluded. Felons lose their rights and nobody seems to give a shit.

No, the problem only shows up when someone thinks that there is a possibility that they might lose their religious fetish gun. Because apparently somehow we seem to expect the people who should not have access to guns to rationally recognize this and give them up.

That’s the logic I see, anyway.

50
Pawn of the Oppressor  Oct 1, 2015 • 6:38:50pm

Continuing my thoughts -

I know it sounds weird to blame Ze Germans for mass shootings, but I’m going out on a historical limb. Some of this is arguably bullshit, and I’m only stringing together ideas looking for a pattern, based on some of my experiences.

Reading Barbara Tuchmann’s A Distant Mirror about the 14th century, I realized that the idea of chivalry and “noble knights” was a whitewash. King Arthur, in a sense, is pure propaganda.

Knights were assholes. Imagine young men with land and money, who took funds from the local poor to run around on expensive horses in expensive armor to fight expensive wars which were probably kind of fun, given the times, all the while claiming that they were needed and that the really cared about higher concepts like protecting kingdoms and lords. The whole first Crusade was arguably launched just to keep them busy. They were DICKS.

And you know what’s really strange? When you listen to American Presidential Campaign rhetoric, these men aren’t statesmen. They’re running for Knighthood.

I am a strong man who will take up sword and shield to defend the honor of America. With my Broadsword fighter squadrons, I will slay the Mussulman and the Dragon, and restore the virtue of our maidens, and God and Christ in Heaven will smile upon us again! Just put me in charge of the purse-strings and I’ll make it happen. Vote for me, Angry Man, and we’ll totally fuck those guys you don’t like! TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG! HURR! It’s Teutonic knighthood they’re selling, not Presidency.

Another item - An ex-girlfriend of mine here in Texas attends a Church of Christ. She has one son, fathered by cheating in her first marriage. Her parents grew up on the Arkansas-Missouri border. She’s like a checklist of bad stereotypes in some respects… I’m not even going to get into some of the crazy shit she puts in her kid’s head, but he is fully supported in his playing high school football.

This young man told me that football is so popular in Texas because “It’s a way to get your anger out”. So I’m in a state heavily settled by German immigrants in the not-too-distant past, where the chief sport is now dressing up in armor and smashing each other to bits every week, as violently as the law will allow? Really? Hmmm…. See where my thinking goes?

This same cultural base is churning along, producing reactionary, angry men at every level. Men who are angry, men who play knight when they can, but can’t form posses and kill anybody because of those pussy liburls, men who get status from squishing others. And those men who CAN’T achieve that status in turn stew in their own resentments… It’s a vicious cycle.

“I should be This. I can’t be This, and it must be somebody else’s fault. Therefore I will form a gang and hurt those who stop me. If I can’t form a gang, I will internalize my hate until it makes me snap, and I will destroy the most vulnerable people I can get my hands on, even if it’s my own family. If I can’t achieve, I’ll make them grieve.

I’m seeing the same Geist in every Zeit. I really think it’s all connected in our cultural bedrock somewhere.

I’m wondering if the way to get people to pay attention is to get into the NRA’s face.

I’ve suggested this before (not here, but on FB), but if I had a million bucks and health insurance, I’d get a van and a bunch of body bags. Every day, I’d drive up to the NRA HQ and lay out (stuffed) body bags labeled with the name of a person killed by a gun identified in the previous 24 hours. Every. Day. Sun. Rain. Shine. President. Pope. Wash, rinse, repeat. Lay the body bags on the sidewalk. In front of the NRA HQ/Museum. Which gets tour buses every day. And present the NRA with the fruits of its labors in the symbolic bodies of dead people.

I just think back to the ActUp people and they got great things done for AIDS treatment when they stopped playing nice. I think it’s time to take the fight to the NRA.

I can’t do this myself, though, because I need a job with decent health insurance to cover my pre-existing conditions. But if someone wants to take this on as a mission, because we have a Serious Public Health Crisis, be my guest.

My one quibble with your analysis is that “knights errant” were very often younger sons and random young men without prospects, rather than the rich and powerful. Nothing to lose, touchy about their honor-just like a lot of men today. Tournaments were a way for the local lords to keep them occupied and out of other trouble, and for the knights themselves it gave them a chance to gain glory and the other guy’s stuff if they beat someone.

Nope. Directly on top of the distributor. I opened the hood and was surprised to be greeted by the sight of my cap and plug wires burning with rich, nasty, plastic-y smoke. (The fuel filter runs adjacent to and somewhat above the distributor on its way to the carburetor.)

I don’t intend to paint a bleak picture of all white men as dangerous, violent animals. And it’s not limited to European culture either. ISIS, for example, in my view is pure tribal masculinity run riot with no limits and a healthy dose of religious apocalyptic nihilism for motivation. “Form a club! Get some guns! Own women! Cut off heads, kill gays, machine-gun your bothersome neighbors! IT’S AWESOME!” The whole gang is top-heavy with guys in their 20’s and stupid, stupid young girls who love bad boys. They are the New Kids On The Block of murder, and they know it.

…If they had any business sense, they’d open a resort and big-game hunting preserve with infidels instead of animals, and charge $600 a night to kill people with heavy weapons. If they hung a cross over the door and stocked the land with gay people, they’d be advertising in the back of Outdoor Life by now… //dark

However the more time goes by, the more the population goes up, the more I hear the absolutely unceasing rhetoric from our right wing which hasn’t changed in tone or content since the 1830’s - “Oh my balls! Oh my sacred honor! Oh, fuck you, I’ma kill you all now! YOU WON’T REPLACE ME!!” *shakes fist*!!! …The more I think it’s just something fundamentally wrong in the male side of the human species. I’m sure books have been written on this elsewhere.

You can bet the right wing will do everything they can to bury that, shout it down, and find some way to cast him as a liberal.

Well, of course. I think we all know that all mass murders are liberals, therefore this guy must be a liberal. It’s just basic logic.

So let’s say, for the sake of discussion, this horrible creature in Oregon had used home-made explosives to kill all those poor people. For example, he sneaked into the school late at night and planted bombs in the classrooms.

Do you suppose there would be a groundswell of support to deregulate — rather than regulate — those ingredients? And loudly advocate that everyone should carry bombs around as a deterrent, and to lob them at anyone who threatens to set off explosives? And shout down anyone who says lots of people carrying around explosives is a bad idea?

Nope. Directly on top of the distributor. I opened the hood and was surprised to be greeted by the sight of my cap and plug wires burning with rich, nasty, plastic-y smoke. (The fuel filter runs adjacent to and somewhat above the distributor on its way to the carburetor.)

Well, that’s a new one on me. Sounds like you’ll only need a new distributor cap and wires, and at worst, a new distro.

My fuel injected Reliant (actually, my ex-wife’s car) caught fire when something went wrong with the TBI and too much fuel got sprayed onto an overheating engine. We watched helplessly as the fire spread from the throttle body, along the wiring and fuel lines to the rest of the engine. The FD put it out, but the car was a loss by then.

Ouch. Yeah, I got lucky that an extinguisher was nearby. I plan on putting one in the car going forward. I’ll need a new distro, new fuel filter and lines, and it did get some of the wiring harness for the electronic ignition, so I need a new connector and to do some splicing, which is old hat for a computer nerd like me. It’s just a matter of time and money to get her put back together. Unfortunately, the fire did blister the paint on the hood, but it needed refinishing anyway due to an incident by a previous owner.

Number three on that list is often neglected and super-important. There are thought patterns and learned behaviors that don’t rise to the level of life-affecting pathology—mental illness in the according-to-Hoyle sense—that mess people up.

It’s the shoal I run aground on: there’s not really a way to “fix” shitty culture. Stupid power fantasies, masculinity equaling aggression, honor cultures that demand retaliation for slights…really obvious shitty ideas that propagate violence…we can’t control the circulation of those concepts. I think number three is also a big influence in why we see things happen - both the planned long term things and the spur of the moment shootings - and like you say, isn’t something that rises to the level of mental illness that would trigger the loss of access to firearms, per what I interpret the standard position to be. And yet we somehow expect people to be rational in the face of this and voluntarily give up their access to guns in a culture that ruthlessly doubles down on how their access is their right and indeed their only defense against a tyranny that wants to take those weapons away.

I’d also like a unicorn.

You got off easy, by comparison. If I had an extinguisher handy, I could have minimized the damage, but the car was old and I probably would have junked it anyway. Looking back, I wonder if the catalytic converter was plugged. I remember the car started getting sluggish, despite my pressing the gas pedal further and further. At the time, we were about 10 minutes from home and I was trying to get the old boat those last few miles. Oh, well.

Those K cars, though, were pretty reliable if stodgy. We were a Chrysler family for a long time, until the V-6s and their crummy cylinder heads put me off.

Exactly! Why are individual mass-murders going off-scale high? Until the last twenty years, the worst school massacre was committed by a guy with a bomb in the 1920s. The first mass shootings started right after WW2. It hasn’t gotten any better. What’s going on?

Look at where we are now: Population and population density as high as it’s ever been, microcapitalism and macrocapitalism working overtime to squeeze every last buck out of everybody else, social media and be-famous-now culture wiring it all together, and it’s all hanging on a global media network where you can stew in your own hate juice for YEARS, getting support from a vast network of crazy people, and then when you finally snap, you can literally live-stream a murder to millions.

It’s like we’re taking every pressure factor out there and turning it up to 11 all at once.

You can’t race a shock wave and expect to win. Seriously, those civil defense drills of the ’50s and ’60s were mostly for show.

First grade for me was in a small school building right next to a mothballed Nike missile base. This was in 1962. If that whole Cuban thing had gone bad, we’d have been vaporized and no amount of hiding under our desks was going to prevent that.

There’s a metric shit-ton of laws on the books when it comes to explosives of all types, as well as laws for precursor chemicals used in making high-energy chemical weapons. Well, if that dating site profile is accurate, he identified as mixed race, Conservative, and Republican.

I think CCJ is only imagining the media have labeled Harper-Mercer as white, so he can work in his “brown people are evil and violent” and “I’m always right” angles.

Pawn of the Oppressor  Oct 1, 2015 • 7:44:43pm

Now as a gun owner and somebody who’s been on both sides of the NRA line, here are my thoughts on regulations.

- Minimum age to purchase a gun should be 25 if you’re male, and 18 if you’re female. I don’t know how this would work in the real world, but I think a little gender bias in the licensing and purchase regulations would help. Keep the tools away from that 18-25 killer male demographic. You want to shoot, boy? Join the Army (or the Militia).

- Mental health professionals who write a referral for anybody, should have that referral reported to the instant check system. College, workplace, private, doesn’t matter who they are, if they’re a licensed professional and they’re worried you’re violent, you ought to be flagged.

- Mandatory arrest and felony status for domestic violence convictions. You assault your wife or girlfriend, you’re a felon, and you’ve lost your right to own firearms forever. Period.

- “A Well Regulated Militia” should actually exist. I’m thinking something like European national services, or the National Guard, but you would be available for disaster relief too. Like a civil auxiliary force on the Swiss model, maybe. Some kind of membership or past service in this force would be the pre-requisite for owning a gun, or at least handguns. There should be a community service equivalent if you can’t do anything military-ish for health or religious reasons. Some states require you to pass training courses that include conflict resolution, details of the law, and a shooting ability test before you can carry a handgun, why not extend that to ownership in general? If you want to have deadly devices, you need to serve society and be available in an emergency.

- For those who want to own lots and lots of guns… A Collector’s License should be available but it ought to be pricey and it would have tiers. Handguns the costliest, old military bolt-actions from three or four wars ago, the cheapest. Storage and access requirements should all be strict.

- Handgun production needs to be regulated and capped. We’re drowning in the damned things. We have enough for centuries. If the military needs them, great, but they account for what, like 98% of shootings in the country?

- On that note, we’d need like the mother of all buyback programs. How to get the ones we have “off the streets”?

I haven’t thought about exceptions for things like teaching shooting, or shooting sports like skeet and trap (which I enjoy)… Or the proverbial and very real battered spouse/girlfriend/woman living alone… There’s got to be a way we can have traditions and enjoy the things we like about firearms, and have real self-defense, while curbing this wee little mass murder and crime problem we seem to have. And obviously laws are only as good as people who obey them, so the real impact will be in curbing the supply available to those who behave badly.

From the article, there was someone on campus with a concealed handgun who did not get in trouble for it when he was searched by an officer afterwards.

Please, RWNJs, tell me some more about this “gun-free zone” there.

As a gun owner as well, I note this that Dr. Lizzardo posted earlier about the Gun Laws of the Czech Republic.

en.wikipedia.org

These, I’d argue, are just about where our minimum should be. By EU standards, they’re still quite lax, many of the levels of licensing are “shall issue” if you are qualified but they still require a written exam, practical test, and physical/psych clearance by your doctor as conditions to be qualified. I’d consider that a major step forward to being in compliance with the “Well Regulated Militia” clause.

When I read the article, it says this:

Three additional victims were taken to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, about an hour north of the site of the shooting. The hospital said on Twitter that the victims were all female and between the ages of 18 and 34, and quoted a doctor who said that an “army” of doctors and nurses had volunteered to help. The hospital later said two of the victims were in serious condition and one was critical.

It’s hard for me to tell if all the victims were or just those brought to that hospital.

The Daily Show with Trevor Noah from last night was pretty good. I thought his interview with Chris Christie was effective enough. Dude has taped four episodes as of tonight. After watching Noah interview Christie I think he can pull this off. Noah seems genuinely curious and well-read. Let’s see over time if he’s funny, too.

GotNwes fed the hamsters enough to produce a new scoop.

BREAKING! CONFIRMED!! Chris Harper-Mercer was 26-year-old suspect in #UCCShooting

Thanks to the crack(pot) reporting of GotNewsDotCom (that’s the parody site, not this one), the now-dead suspect in the Umpqua Community College shooting was Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, who had several social media accounts. And guns.

That’s about the only thing GNDC gets right.

GNDC editor-in-thief Chuck C. Johnson says the media had misidentified Harper-Mercer as white. They haven’t mentioned his race at all.

While Harper-Mercer’s dating profile does say he was “mixed race,” Johsnon does not say how he concluded that Harper-Mercer was not white, however. Maybe it was his keen race-dar that clued him in.

“…Here’s a good time to remind everyone that the Second Amendment was written by slaveholders before we had electricity, much less the kind of weaponry that would-be murderers can buy today. But sure, if you think it’s that precious, we can compromise: If you love Second Amendment that much, feel free to live in a powdered wig and shit in a chamberpot while trying to survive off what you can kill with an 18th century musket. In exchange, let those of us living in this century pass some laws so we can feel safe going to class, or the movies, or anywhere without worrying that some maladjusted man will try to get his revenge by raining death on random strangers.”

Problem with that line: Even if you’re only talking about bolt-action rifles, of a kind that no one is talking about banning, you’re already talking about weapons that are far deadlier than anything that existed in the time of the Founders.

Other (minor) problem: Many of the Founders were not slaveholders: John Hancock was not, nor John Adams, nor Ben Franklin either.

Also, rumor has it that the shooter was another Men’s Rights loon, as is Chuck.
