Chris Thile and Punch Brothers continue to experiment with… unusual forms of music.

Punch Brothers perform “Sleek White Baby” from their upcoming EP, The Wireless, due out November 20 on Nonesuch Records. Pre-order now at http://PunchBrothers.com

Music by Punch Brothers, words by Gabriel Kahane

Lyrics:
Do you ever feel alone, old pal?
Are you ragged, running low on morale
Have I got something grand
That I’ve planned for you!

Baby, do you burn for glowing power after dark
In the shadow of some hour you’ll feel the spark
Have I got something swell
That I’ll tell to you…

You’re not alone…

For so many years, man has suffered the plague of isolation. Isolation from his fellow man, fellow woman, unable to connect, unable to reach out and touch someone, to be tethered, to be one with the world.

But now, man and woman can be attuned to every arcane detail, every dog’s bark, every boy’s bat, every girl’s tiara, with a new invention, a staggering development in technology.

Sleek white baby
Keep it by your bedside, maybe
And then
How all of your friends
All of our friends
Are here now
Such cheer, now.

Nine out of ten businessmen agree, the sleek white baby should be your constant companion, whether you’re dining, traveling, moping, convalescing, or eating a sandwich. Don’t be the one left out.

If you fail to buy our prized new machine (why would you do that?)
You will find yourself stung by the sting (it’s painful, really it is)
of gloom and misery, pal, you will die alone (that doesn’t sound pleasant, does it?)
Alone, alone, alone, alone - oooh…

Oooooh oooh…

I was ready to believe this because it’s typical GOP-speak, but Raw Story has a bad habit of twisting what people say. So I went and looked at the actual CNN video… and that’s not really what Boehner said at all.

Speaker John Boehner on State of the Union: Full Interview

You can tell from the way he’s talking about it he isn’t seriously claiming “God told him” Ryan should be Speaker of the House, and he never says anything about a “divine plan.” He pretty much admits using “Catholic guilt” in a cynical manipulative way to get Ryan to agree.

This is one reason I’m not crazy about Raw Story. These people are bad enough without distorting what they say to make them look worse.

This isn’t just a Raw story thing, any time I see a headline that has quotes around 2 or 3 words and then something really inflamatory in the rest of the headline, I know it is pretty much BS. I don’t even bother clicking on the stories any more.

Well, not sorry to see him go. I still remember January 1, 1996, when a Canadian friend of mine and I (and I lived in Utah at the time) argued with a friend from Virginia over Internet Relay Chat about his love for Willis Carto. The entire day. Hours and hours. This guy probably still loves Willis Carto. I haven’t checked his FB to see if he’s in mourning. I don’t think I want to know.

Thank you. This is one of two reasons I stopped reading Raw Story. The other was the readership is lousy with conspiracy theorists, especially truthers. Some of the contributors are a little squirelly as well. One post was a glowing review of some syndicated CT shitfest that Jesse Ventura was hosting.

I wish I had bookmarked the article, but I caught Addicting Info pulling this horseshit as well.

The Ascent of Woman (BBC), all four episodes (Civilisation, Separation, Power, Revolution):

The Ascent of Woman 1 Civilisation BBC Documentary 2015

Girls Can Code (BBC), two episodes (I don’t know if more are forthcoming):

Girls Can Code Episode 1 BBC Documentary 2015

Enemy of Enemies: The Rise of ISIL (Al Jazeera), two parts:

Featured Documentary - Enemy of Enemies: The Rise of ISIL (Part 1)

Featured Documentary - Enemy of Enemies: The Rise of ISIL (Part 2)

Not a documentary, but a very interesting project. Sad that it’s necessary. The Million Image Database Project: BBC News World 2015-09-28

More on the main reasons behind the destruction (namely iconoclasm & cash flow, not religion):

I recall seeing something in my newsfeed a couple of days ago about the assberets that run Hobby Lobby being investigated for spending an obscene amount of money on stolen artifacts from the middle east. Which means, in all likelihood they’re giving money to ISIL/ISIS or other terrorists so they can stock a “Christian” museum with stolen, most likely priceless things that don’t belong to them. Bastards.

I seriously doubt these artifacts are authentic, so the money is going to the forgery industry which is much more widespread the trade in genuine antiquities.

Assberets indeed. IMO, anyone caught buying Middle Eastern artifacts from war-torn areas needs to be prosecuted for providing material support for terrorism. That’s not hyperbole, I’m dead serious.

From what I read they weren’t clear, but there is an investigation into the fact that they were buying something they had to have presumed was real. I kind of hope they got ripped off, but either way it speaks to what kind of people they truly are. Beyond their meddling in politics and paying their workers shit wages with shitty benefits.

The concern is real enough, but this particular case has been going on from a time before ISIS controlled any significant territory, several years IIRC.

Yeah, that’ll work. First, you have to not think of them as ‘the place where Those People live’. Second, you have to accept that city living is a much more communal thing than most rural living, and far more infrastructure-intensive. Third, you have to not think of them as crime-ridden pestholes full of welfare queens and homeless moochers.

Basically, you have to not hate cities and city-dwellers. The Base won’t allow that.

After about 150 days of suffering and hundreds of dollars spent on “consultations” and natural remedies, her children get better. Heather describes the period as a “living hell,” affecting her relationship with her husband and questioning “everything I knew about natural health,” which is not much, apparently.

Sadly, she tells the story like she has triumphed. She says, “We did it.” without needing medical care. Referring to herself, she writes

It has been my biggest challenge to date as a mother. This mother conquered.

And for what reason, one may ask, was it necessary to not seek medical treatment and to allow pertussis to run its course, wrecking havoc all over these childrens’ lives? Heather has an answer.

My children developed REAL and TRUE immunity from being exposed to this bacteria and fighting it off naturally.

Obviously, Heather does not understand that immunity acquired through a vaccine is both real and true immunity. And, it is much, much safer than the illness her children contracted.

My developed way of telling them apart was that the Clydesdales are “leggy” compared to the others - since they’re dray horses and not used for plowing work. And I generally try to differentiate between the Belgians and Perchons by color.

I think all the foals look sort of similar for these breeds. The Clydesdales don’t get taller until they get a little older. I have a picture or two of two Clydesdales that are brothers when they were 1- and 2-year-olds and then a few years later when the 1-year-old was then the bigger horse. They were a well-matched team and I think they were sold as a pair of trained geldings.

Percherons are generally grey, with an occasional black. Clydes are pretty big, but Shires are bigger and hairier. I’ve observed most from a distance, including two Clyde stallions having a major battle in the Illinois State Fairgrounds show ring. In the lineup, a handler wasn’t paying attention, and it deteriorated rapidly. I decided then that they were too big for me!

I’ve ridden a couple of Percherons without saddles, but when I was much younger.

I usually did better without a saddle than with one. I tended to bounce a lot when riding a horse (but not Percheron) with a saddle.

Edit: Add - I am not a good rider, much too tense.

My brother-in-law’s advice for going into the pastures and that they’d be curious and come up to you. And that the younger ones might be a little clumsy and you should be careful that they don’t step on you. As they got older and trained to harness they were pretty easy to handle. I got drafted to horse hold a few times.

I bounced around a lot with or without a saddle. Those big horses can be mighty comfy without a saddle, if your legs are flexible.

You did need to keep an eye on them. And it also varied from horse to horse. The one stallion he had for a while was a complete jerk and would nip/bite if you weren’t paying attention.

About the only horse that I think I could ride - I get on a regular-sized horse, and they get pissed. Clydesdales? Well, I figure that if they can pull a beer wagon, they can handle an NFL defensive-end size human like me without all that much effort.

Woot! Just solved another long-running problem with the LGF Pages posting window — if you tried to select a large amount of text, you’d get a “URI Too Long” error message. This is because there’s a rather small limit on the amount of characters a URL can contain. And now that the underlying HTML code is also included, it’s pretty easy to run into the limit.

So now the bookmarklet uses some arcane trickery to POST the selected text to the Pages window, using an HTML form instead of encoding it in a URL. There’s still a limit but it’s so large no one will ever run into it now.

Still testing, but I’ll be making the new version of the LGF Pages bookmarklet available soon.

An El Paso family, the McIntyres, is accused of failing to teach its nine hone-schooled children anything because they were “waiting to be raptured.”

But the family says its children were educated and has accused the local school district of being anti-Christian.

An appeals court already ruled against them, saying no family has won a case claiming an absolute right to home school.

By some estimates, Texas leads the nation in home-schooled students.

Back when I used to keep a dozen American Railroad Pocket Watches running all the time, the switch between Standard and Daylight Saving Times was quite a chore, especially since Railroad watches are lever set, meaning you don’t pull up on the crown to put it in setting mode, but rather unscrew the bezel (holds the crystal) and pulling up on a lever. Then screwing the bezel back on, making sure not to cross-thread it.

Nowadays, I only keep 4 watches running constantly, so it’s a lot faster!

It’s not well-established enough to be in most dictionaries, but that’s not even the point: according to the original and mainstream definition of racism anyone with racial prejudice is a racist. So saying that you can’t be a racist towards whites is wrong. You can at most say “but by my special re-definition you can’t be a racist towards whites”, no more than that.

I tend to believe racism can be split into 2 or 3 types, systemic, cultural and personal, with systemic & cultural the iffy area. Personal racism can be experienced by anyone from anyone. Cultural/systemic are where power differential comes into play.

Exactly.

It doesn’t even make sense to call any single person “racist” according to this new re-definition. Because it’s not the persons, but the systems that are racist. Saying that a person is “racist” on this definition is pretty much meaningless.

So when someone is talking about the ability of non-white people to be personally racist, it’s the original definition that is used, and it makes no sense whatsoever to spout the “prejudice+power” meme as if it had any relevance to the discussion.

People regurgitating a meme they read somewhere on tumblr doesn’t bring any validity to the use.

Moreover, you’re missing the point. These people may have their own special re-definition that they hold true, but they can’t tell someone who is using the original definition that they’re wrong.

Or would if I had a mind to get involved in any of those discussions outside of here, which I typically don’t.

Racism affects my family, so I do tend to get involved in discussions on occasion.

Found this photo today.
It’s MrBWS’s ‘55 HD Panhead in the backyard.
The stunning part of the photo, to me, is all the open space 20 years ago that has now been taken over by Mother Nature.
That clear hill in the back? It is now a dense stand of fairly mature poplar trees.
The orchard in front is now a tangle of wild wisteria and huge feral fruit trees.

I am feeling soooo old….

The original ‘Terminator’ is on the TV, and it is really amazing how far special effects have come. Every time they use an animatronic head instead of the actual Arnold, it’s obvious. Not even in the same league as the current level of integration of CGI animation with live action!

I remember being scared shitless as a kid by the Harryhausen-animated skeleton warriors in ‘Jason And The Argonauts’, now they look jerky and fake.

RIP, Fred Thompson

Fred Thompson, a former U.S. senator for Tennessee, GOP presidential candidate, Watergate attorney and longtime “Law and Order” star, died on Sunday. He was 73.

Mr. Thompson died after a recurrence of lymphoma, according to a statement issued by the Thompson family.

“It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of grief that we share the passing of our brother, husband, father, and grandfather who died peacefully in Nashville surrounded by his family,” the statement reads.

When you buy a new car every 11 or so years, you tend to make leaps in technology.

I’ve driven 3 cars since 1984: a ‘78 Chevy Chevette; an ‘86 Honda Civic hatchback; and the aforementioned ‘99 Honda Civic sedan.

If I keep going at my current rate, the next car I get will not only be self-driving, it’ll have anti-grav capability.

Clint’s singing was good, if you’re talking High School Drama Club. Lee Marvin’s doesn’t even approach that level of listenable.

Apart from that, it’s a really enjoyable flick!

Howlin, every single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman.

In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing, and typewriters used monospaced fonts.

The use of proportionally spaced fonts did not come into common use for office memos until the introduction of laser printers, word processing software, and personal computers. They were not widespread until the mid to late 90’s. Before then, you needed typesetting equipment, and that wasn’t used for personal memos to file. Even the Wang systems that were dominant in the mid 80’s used monospaced fonts.

I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old.

This should be pursued aggressively.

Well, that IS a well-established definition of racism, that it requires being on the upside of a power differential. You may disagree with its use, but it’s not really wrong.

I would say you can be racist toward white people. For example, rednecks or hillbillies. This thing about those is those are mainly used by whites against others.

If a black paramedic showed up and refused to treat a person because he’s white, that would be racism.

The power component comes in because whites can make it their racism towards blacks cost more, and whites can make any racism BY blacks costly as well.

re: #192 Nyet

From what I can tell, “Buckhead” (Harry W. MacDougald) first asked some questions about the documents, specifically about the fonts. That’s not the same as proving the case.

As far as I remember, Charles did the analysis with the Word document and the original “throbbing memo” once the questions started to get raised.

You can make up a new word, or reassign an old word, to cover the ideology of the NOI and the Yahwist separatists. In the meanwhile, “racist” pretty well covers it.

Clint’s singing was good, if you’re talking High School Drama Club. Lee Marvin’s doesn’t even approach that level of listenable.

Apart from that, it’s a really enjoyable flick!

Love this movie. Even with the singing — it’s in character for the character. Can you imagine if they’d dubbed it and a lovely tenor is supposedly coming out of Lee Marvin’s throat?

It’s amazing that after all this time, there’s still revisionist BS surrounding the Rathergate docs, who did what, and Charles’ role. Thing is that it’s all quite well documented (for those willing to put the time/effort in).

Crazy that they’re still trying to revise the history - and the same folks who were busy cheering you for coming up with the throbbing memo, are now claiming you had nothing to do with any of it, or that you were simply on the periphery.

One thing that makes it more difficult for them to write you out is the fact that your involvement in Rathergate helped spur the creation of PJ Media as well, which Charles participated in for several years.

Unfortunately his reverse mortgage work out-shined his public service. And Law & Order.

So I’m going through various ancient annals and find Allahpundit shitting on Politkovskaya in 2004:

Misfortune continues to befall journalists sent to cover the massacre in Beslan. Allah told you on Monday about two Russian reporters who never made it to Ossetia, one because he was detained for “hooliganism” and the other because she came down with a mysterious case of food poisoning on the flight out.
[…]
So: Putin bad, reporters good, right? Not so fast. Anna Politkovskaya, the reporter who was allegedly poisoned on her way to Beslan, has a piece in tomorrow’s Guardian that contains an interesting bit of information.
[…]
She wasn’t going there to “cover” the event. She was going to there to negotiate with the Chechens. Reporters without Borders admits as much in an article posted on Monday:[…]
Suddenly it’s not hard to see why Putin might not want people like her running around during a hostage standoff. That Politkovskaya apparently felt unbound by her journalistic duty not to interfere in the story is defensible in light of the extreme circumstances. But to do so in a manner that would undercut her own government’s authority in plain view of the enemy is inexcusable, in my opinion. It’s not a whole lot different from private Israeli citizens negotiating the Geneva Accord or John Kerry having finger sandwiches with the Vietcong in Paris. We’ve even got a statute on the subject. None of which, of course, is to say that Politkovskaya deserved to be poisoned for her actions, but it does go to show that in Russia, as so often seems to be the case, it’s less a matter of good guys and bad guys than bad guys and really bad guys.

Fuuuuck dat guy.

My response to them would be along the lines of: Look, we are only carrying your farcical attempts at “debate” for the entertainment factor and for those Americans who are into playing hazardous drinking games. As far as we’re concerned, we don’t care what you do. The door is that way, don’t let it hit your collective ass on the way out, and have fun storming the castle.

The networks need to say that they’ve already made arrangements with the RNC and will not renegotiate with the individual campaigns. If they don’t want to do that, then they’re free to skip the debates.

From a once important rw blog:

wizbangblog.com

Charles Johnson’s graphic was what convinced most people that the document was indeed a forgery. It has been mentioned in multiple national media outlets including (from memory) TIME Magazine, USA Today, CNN and FOX News. This graphic is historically important because thousands, if not millions of people reproduced it in their own homes and offices.

I’m curious about the anti-fascist commie chick who is front and center.
Google (Wiki) tells me: “Women played a large role. After the war, about 35,000 Italian women were recognised as female partigiane combattente (partisan combatants) and 20,000 as patriote (patriots); they broke into these groups based on their activities. The majority were between 20 and 29. They were generally kept separate from male partisans. Few were attached to brigades and were even rarer in mountain brigades. Female countryside volunteers were generally rejected. Women still served in large numbers and had significant influence.” en.wikipedia.org

Nice thought, but these debates have gotten these channels higher ratings than they have had in years, maybe ever. CNBC had 14 million viewers, more than the world series game on opposite it.

The problem with that is there are no news divisions any more. Everything is entertainment and has to get ratings.

What are the ratings this year compared to years past? I’m honestly curious, because I wonder how much is unique to this year and how much is just the nature of presidential debates.

Secondly, there is some really short sighted actions by the candidates here. Debates are free media. People tune out commercials (or skip them with the help of dvrs). You can’t skip a free media event that people are actually going to see, that’s campaign suicide. The professionals in the campaigns (assuming there are any left in the GOP world) have to be going crazy over this

In 2011 the top rated debates were pulling ~7 million viewers. The first fox debate this year had over 20 million.

RIP, Fred Thompson

Damn, I didn’t know he’d been sick…fucking cancer.

I may not have cared for some of his politics (or his reverse mortgage gig), but I respected much of his high-profile work as a lawyer, as minority counsel for the Watergate investigation (the “what did President Nixon know and when did he know it?” line that Sen. Howard Baker asked supposedly came from Thompson) and for taking on and winning the suit for Marie Ragghianti’s wrongful termination from the TN parole board that exposed Gov. Ray Blanton’s “clemency for cash” corruption and led to Blanton’s resignation (the movie Marie was made about her and was also Thompson’s first acting gig, playing himself). I also liked him many of his acting roles, in Die Hard 2, in The Hunt for Red October, as Roseanne’s (last) boss at the plastic factory in Roseanne (he played that one like a real SOB), and in Law & Order.

To use a cliche, Fred had gravitas…RIP.

But the sad fact is that a presidential debate should in no way be connected to rating, ever. This is likely the worst way that Trump has distorted the process.

How in the world would any sane person equate the ability to draw TV ratings with ability to run a goddamned country?
