Tech Note: A Cool New Feature for LGF Pages Authors!

Digging down deep

We have a new feature to announce for registered LGF Pages contributors! You’ll have to install the bookmarklet to take advantage of it, so if you haven’t done that yet, hover over the “Create A Page” button at the top of the right sidebar for a popup dialog with instructions on how to install it. (It’s very quick and easy.)

The bookmarklet has always been designed to let you easily insert text from a website into the posting window; you just click and drag to select the text you want to use as a quote, then click the bookmarklet and the selected text appears in the editing area of the LGF Pages window.

That’s a nice feature, but previously the plain text was all that would be copied into the Pages window. If it contained links or HTML formatting like bold or italics, those would be ignored.

But now, our new feature actually copies the underlying HTML code for your selected text, so if it contains links, formatting, lists, etc., that code will also be inserted into the Pages window, automagically! So now your quoted sections can be much richer in content, with links to other sites and visual cues for emphasis as the original author intended — with no effort on your part.

Some HTML tags are still stripped out, for security reasons; images, Javascript, and other types of code that might potentially cause problems won’t be copied. And some HTML attributes are also removed — class, style, and ID — because those are either meaningless without the original site’s CSS or might cause problems with formatting.

So please enjoy, and let me know if you encounter any strangeness. I’ve tested it extensively with dozens of websites, but you never know.

(Caveat: some sites have security code in place that prevents this feature from working, but not too many; at this point, the main site that doesn’t allow this kind of feature to work is the New York Times. You can still select text and use the bookmarklet to easily grab a quote from the Times site, but it won’t contain the HTML formatting.)

I’m seeing a lot of Halloween costumes on my feeds, mostly kids of friends. Quite a few Star Wars costumes, including kids as stormtroopers. Every time I see one, I want to comment “aren’t you a little short to be a stormtrooper?” But I don’t think anyone will get it. Also, stormtrooper seems a strange choice for the kids - I get dad going as a stormtrooper with kid as Vader or some such, but not for the kid. Lastly, these Star Wars costumes need more Boba Fett

As one comment notes, Hillary spent 11 hours handling “gotcha” questions without batting an eye and left without any complaints about how mean the committee was. These fools couldn’t make it through 2 hours before they began attacking the mods and whining about the questions they were being asked.

It’s pretty clear by this point who the more presidential candidate is.

Just look slightly below the surface of that stat:

It’s only “good politics” if one thinks that the majority of Americans live in the same fact-free cocoon that the GOP has weaved around itself and so is looking less for a guy with some good ideas and more for a blowhard asshole who gets off on belittling his enemies (real or perceived). Seriously, if you think people get hot and bothered watching Cruz give his best Tailgunner Joe impression on live TV, then you’re what’s wrong with the GOP.

That’s a might more accurate. They’re engaged in any sort of fraud, such as handcuffing the CBO to a system of interpreting their budgets as assuming tax cuts lead to economic booms rather than just more lost tax revenue. Or hamstringing the CDC by preventing it from using funding to investigate gun fatalities using federal funding.

No trick or treaters here yet either. We live on a steep hill, no sidewalks or streetlights. And oh yeah, the community has Halloween activities down in the flatter part of the neighborhood. Still, we occasionally get a group or two of the middle schoolers later in the evening, so we have some Reese’s on hand. Mr. C will eat any leftovers.

We will enjoy a nice glass of wine in the meanwhile.

Evening Lizardim. Happy Halloween from the cool, cloudy wild north country. Fishspawn hauled in two rather overflowing buckets of candy, and we had approximately 70 trick-or-treaters ringing our doorbell overall. How go things out there among the gentle lizardfolk?

71
CleverToad  Oct 31, 2015 • 7:31:00pm

Pretty good night for trick or treaters, probably about forty total. We’ve had heavier years in past. My kid is sitting a few feet from the front door, in dim light, in a black robe, skull mask & skeleton hand gloves, holding the candy bucket. Waits till someone gets close and then moves. So far two little kids have refused to go get any candy till I went and got it for them. One middle-school girl actually screeched when he spoke. He considers this to have been a Successful Night.

It’s about 8:30. so getting ready to close down soon. Saying goodnight and good wishes to all of the Lizards for about a month — I’ll be on in short bursts, but won’t be able to stay on for the 300+ threads, and will probably miss a few. NaNoWriMo starts at midnight, and I am going to attempt this year to FINISH two half-written novels in the allotted month. The 50,000 word goal should just about do it.

We who are about to die, salute you.

On the one hand, my 11yo is a pain in the ass with his Halloween costume ideas. Last year: “I wanna be black hole” (don’t ask what thoughts went through my mind); this year: “I’m going to be string theory” (smdh). On the other hand, absurd costumes are easy to make. You can do the first one with cardboard and duct tape to make the accretion disk that will be so heavy like a yoke that he’ll buckle under its weight in two blocks of trick or treating and I won’t know how to get out of this run-on sentence….Oh, and string theory? Pipe cleaners and tinsel.

I think so. He’s been into astronomy for a long time, but when I show him some of the intense images NASA is putting out now he says that it gives him the heebie-geebies. We saw “The Martian” together. That made the infinite loneliness of space less lonely to him. It’s going to be fun to see what he comes up with.

Astrophysics is definitely an interesting field, but the math required is intense. I have a friend from high school who has her Ph.D. in it.

On the other hand, at least 75% of a Ph.D. is not knowing when to stop and working to teach yourself what you need to know. Actual percentage probably varies depending on the program.

I completely agree with that. Still, those are awesome costumes.

I found Kip Thorne’s book to be relatively accessible working just with algebra (really no math required, because it is more concept based) so that might be a good one for him to look at if it continues to be an interest. (I was 13-14 when I did a correspondence college course based on it.)

Huh, I’ll have to watch for that one.

I love the image, which is one reason why I was so keen to do it as an embroidery piece. The kit has been good, if frustrating at times. (They did not include nearly enough white floss.) It’s strange, I’m in general not a big fan of his other work - I prefer Hasui by far, and have three of his prints hanging in the office. Hopefully I’ll get it finished this week.

Hasui is a much later time period, relatively speaking - he passed away in the 50s.

This was the first piece by him that I bought. You can get modern runs from the original woodblocks which don’t break the bank the way originals do, thankfully.

That’s gorgeous. It is definitely in accord with several shifts that happened with the opening of Japan. Access to new paints and colors made woodblock-style prints move vivid and deep. Access to Western literature probably changed the focus of some artists (can’t speak for Hasui). I’m rambling, but there was definitely a battle among artists of all stripes of how much to embrace the new influences that were rushing into Japan from the 1850s until…well, now.

Definitely something I hadn’t considered, but I can see the reflections of some of that in a lot of his prints. Hasui was landscape-oriented, in general, but also temples and castles and the more “traditional” Japan - there’s very little in his work that indicates this was in the era leading up to WWII and in fact through WWII. Much more pre-opening Japan as the themes go, in a lot of ways.

I confess I just like them because I am a sucker for good landscapes, and the clean lines and the colors and just gah. I have two others by him, like I said, and probably lust after a good 5-6 more but my 4th piece is a print by Koitsu which also plays a lot with the same concepts of pre-opening Japan (in that one, two geisha stepping out of a tea house - gorgeous play of light).

What you say about laws not passing only applies on the federal level. There have been a number of gun-restricting laws passed at the state and local levels. And even a number of states that didn’t enact general restrictions have enacted measures designed to improve the reporting of those found to be seriously mentally ill in order to keep them from buying guns.

‘Steven Universe’ fandom is melting down after bullied fanartist attempts suicide

It all started last week when a fanartist going by the name Zamii caused a scare on Tumblr when she posted an apparent final note to her Tumblr, then disappeared for three days. When she re-emerged, it was to post a tearful video she claimed was being filmed at a hospital where she said she was getting the help she needed.

Prior to Zamii’s alarming initial farewell, members of the Steven Universe and Homestuck fandoms had reportedly created more than 40 critical blogs and other social media accounts directed at her because they believed she was purveying problematic depictions of many of the characters she drew. During her time in fandom, Zamii had been accused of a litany of flawed portrayals of characters, including perpetuating “racism/stereotyping, transmisogyny/transphobia, apologism, incest, pedophilia, fatphobia, and ableism” in her art. For example, when Zamii drew a Japanese character from the popular anime Yowamushi Pedal, she came under fire for giving the character yellow skin and slanted eyes; when she drew a black character, she came under fire for removing her Afro and giving her blonde hair; when she drew a “Native American Fluttershy” from My Little Pony, the response was mixed and often critical, pointing out that she had further stereotyped the character.

I’m afraid after all the vitriol I have seen, I can’t get rid of the impression that lots of self-described “social justice” folks are there only for bullying, the kind that is superficially “acceptable” (or so they seem to think).

Also, there’s a point after it’s no longer a legitimate criticism but rather stalking.

Children (and other immature beings) are adept at highly refined forms of bullying, and if they can hide behind a veneer of “righteousness” they are even more merciless about it.

That’s a reason why the neo-Nazi Maxim “The Hatchet” Martsinkevitch’s “Occupy Pedophilia” videos were such a smash hit among young people in RuNet:

After getting out of prison Martsinkevich has started the Occupy Pedophilia (Russian: Оккупай-педофиляй) movement focused on beating up and humiliating males regarded as pedophiles. Members of the movement find victims—usually young gay men[citation needed]—through the Internet, pose as minors and go on a date. A group of people then meet the victim and humiliate him, sometimes pouring urine over his head, while filming it for releasing online. Most of these incidents have been ignored by the authorities, letting members of the movement walk free.[1]

Child molesters are “safe targets”. It may as well be that most of the targets deserved to be legally prosecuted. But mob “justice” under pretense of righteousness is something else.

That’s a reason why the neo-Nazi Maxim “The Hatchet” Martsinkevitch’s “Occupy Pedophilia” videos were such a smash hit among young people in RuNet:

Child molesters are “safe targets”. It may as well be that most of the targets deserved to be legally prosecuted. But mob “justice” under pretense of righteousness is something else.

Kristallnacht was presented as “mob justice”

Watching the three South Park episodes that I missed. Seems like the best season in a while.

One scene in the “Safe Space” episode reminded me of a scene in Bulgakov’s “The Heart of a Dog”:

The woman’s eyes sparkled.
“I understand your irony, Professor, we will go now… Only I, as the chairman
of cultural department of our house…”
“Chairwoman,” Philip Philipovich corrected her.
“Would like to ask you,” at this point the woman pulled out of her coat-front a
few brightly coloured journals, still damp from the snow, “to take a few journals sold for the benefit of German children. 50 kopecks each.”
“No, thank you,” replied Philip Philipovich briefly, glancing at the journals.
The four indicated total amazement and the woman went the colour of cranberry juice.
“Why do you refuse?”
“I don’t want them.”
“You have no sympathy for the children of Germany?”
“On the contrary.”
“You grudge fifty copecks?”
“No.”
“Why then?”
“I don’t want them.”
There was a short silence.
“Do you know what, Professor?” said the girl, heaving a deep sigh. “If you were not a luminary known to all Europe and if you had not been interceded for in the most disgraceful manner by… (the fair man tugged at the end of her jacket but she shook him off) by people who, I am quite sure, we will eventually get to the bottom of, you should be arrested.”
“And what for?” inquired Philip Philipovich with some curiosity.
“You are a proletariat-hater!” said the woman proudly.
“Yes, I do dislike the proletariat,” Philip Philipovich agreed sadly and pressed a knob. A bell sounded. A door opened somewhere in the corridor.
“Zina,” called Philip Philipovich, “you may serve dinner. You will permit me, gentlemen?”

Thank you! By the way, Hokusai’s “Great Wave” is one of my favorite images. Your work is amazing. There used to be an interesting BBC documentary about the image, life of Hokusai, and the hydrodynamics of the wave on youtube, but I can’t find it now.

Edited: I just looked at the link. I’m ordering Kip Thorne’s book tonight. The boy has read “the elegant universe” so this seems like a good step.

It’s a favorite of mine as well. Have a poster of it hanging on the wall for the last 20+ years. Need to look for more of that stuff to finish the decor of my “Oriental Room”*.

* - I call it that since the wall decorations are:
An embroidery dragon (red on white) in a round design
Museum print of “The Great Wave”
Two gold dragons embroidered on red silk
Japanese tea set
Two prints on rice paper of samurai
Ink image on scroll of a dragon

Mixed acquisitions from Japan, Malaysia and China going back to 1957.

My Halloween itself was pretty mundane. The apartment building doesn’t do trick-or-treat so I can pretty freely go attend parties or other events.

This year the game store I frequent in West Chester was hosting a boardgame marathon for the Extra Life charity like they have the past few years. Gaming for 11 hours plus games being raffled off. Free snacks, but I kicked in for that a little bit, plus baked a pie and a couple dozen cookies for the owner. (The cookies were put out for the attendees to eat.) Since the event was on Halloween there also was a costume contest as well.

Crazy Cat Lady - winner!

I won a game called “Rampage” in one of the raffles, but none of the games I was really interested in getting. (oh well) Also saw this “new” game, which I thought was a rather clever spoof name.

My diet was also given a pass yesterday. Which my digestive system did not appreciate.

One of the things I love about this place is that someone could make a reference like that and expect people to understand it.

Nice. My things are mostly Japanese. My favorite is calligraphy done for me of a Matsuo Basho haiku (something like “In the lingering spring rain, the Golden Temple remains”). I have a couple of modern Chinese prints of farmers on the collective doing the harvest, but that’s about it. I wish I had some Korean ceramics—all I have are a few books on Korean culture and art given to me by Korean friends over the years.

Don’t wargame as much as I used to due to time constraints and getting opponents. (Never got into using Vassal that much.) At this point I am mainly playing Eurogames, and favor cooperatives and solitaire capable games in terms of purchase. Collection itself is pretty broad, with a lot of wargames in the older purchases.

Given that the Caverna box is *full* of boards and wooden pieces it was put there to prevent it from collapsing other boxes. And it can bear the weight of a cat.

Caverna is my chosen Uwe Rosenberg “develop a farm” game. (Agricola being the most famous one I believe.) However, who can resist the theme of being a family of *dwarves* where besides outside farming half your property is digging in the hillside to make rooms for workshops and mines. Plus you can go on “expeditions” to get more resources once you forge a weapon.

Feline Fearless Leader  Nov 1, 2015 • 7:13:31am

And since I’m doing Oriental art decor I took a few quick Iphone pictures.

One of the Samurai prints my father brought back from Japan. The matching print is another mounted Samurai who just fired the in-flight arrow.

The dragon scroll was something I bought for a few hundred ringits in a market in Kuala Lumpur a few years ago. I have a dragon theme going in collected items due to being born in a Year of the Dragon. My mother’s running vacation collection theme was bird artwork. I have most of that collection on a shelf in my curio cabinet.

My favorite art piece in the apartment was found in a catalog a ways back. There’s a small 8’ tall divider wall in the apartment that is part of the separation from the kitchen to one of the bedrooms (which I use as the den/TV room.) So what would be the ideal item to put on this high shelf that overlooks the entrance to the apartment?

Win-win for the GOP. They throw a tantrum and then either the media companies fold and only toss softball questions, or they lay the groundwork to cancel debates amidst a claim of media bias. Fewer debates to expose their lameness to the moderates/undecided.

And none of the media companies will be brave enough to say “Fine. We won’t give you any coverage at all - about anything.” Where does the Benghazi-bugaloo stuff (soon to be the same pattern regarding Planned Parenthood) go if one or more media companies refuse to broadcast your leaks and talking points?

My brother has a theory that there is a relationship between driver IQ and the quantity of asphalt around them. His explanation for people driving even more idiotically in parking lots as compared to roads.

My pet peeve and competing theory is that grabbing the handles of shopping carts lowers IQ since there are lots of people who seem to not think about spatial relationships when using them; e.g. blocking aisles, crossing aisle intersections without looking, and insisting on crossing parking lots slowly and at a diagonal angle across the lanes going back to their car. Often with HID complicating things and attention span.

Here’s an idea, just have the candidates pick a topic they want to talk about, give them two minutes, them let them challenge one of the others to address the same issue for two minutes, let the first guy respond, then give each of the others a minute or so to put their two cents in. The whole concept of “debates” has gone south—particularly on the GOP side—nobody really debates; nobody answers the actual question asked; there is no fact-checking or challenging the bogus bullshit they say (think of the OUTRAGE when Candy Crowley corrected Mitt) and, sadly, it doesn’t seem that anyone really give a flying fuck as long as their favorite moron gets screen time to spout ridiculous crap.

Wonder what kind of demands the eventual GOP clown candidate will make about the debates in the general? Or will they be like Kasich and others during their last campaigns, and flat out refuse to debate the Dem.

Which is why the Feds should take on more of the responsibility of funding things like education and Medicaid, because state taxes tend to be regressive.

Saw a report on the news this morning that the RNC is demanding that future debate moderators have a proven track record of voting for conservatives. Two thoughts: i) They had Megyn Kelly and they still bitched and whined. ii) More proof that conservatives live in a bubble and want to stay living in a bubble.

This is beyond just staying in their bubble. They want that bubble to become so small they can drown it in a bathtub drain.

A Cranky One  Nov 1, 2015 • 8:54:17am

Since there is some discussion of Japanese art, I’ll share what Mrs Cranky gave me as a wedding present. I already had a collection of work from this artist so she knew I liked his stuff. It was wrapped in black paper when given on our wedding day:

Samson and Delilah

A woman emasculating a powerful man. Mrs Cranky has an interesting sense of humor. ;) It’s fairly large at 23”x27”.

Watanabe was famous for his biblical prints rendered in the mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan. During President Lyndon Johnson’s administration, Watanabe’s prints were hung in the White House. Watanabe uses kozo paper (from mulberry tree) and momigami (kneaded paper). The momigami paper was crumpled by hand, squeezed and wrinkled to give a rough quality to the prints. The katazome method uses traditional organic and mineral pigments in a medium of soybean milk. The protein in the milk bound the colors to the paper’s surface. The use of natural materials is one of the characteristics of mingei (folk art).

Happy November 1st! I woke up this morning with health insurance from my new employer. Happy to say that I managed to make it to Nov 1 without getting sick or injured after screwing up on re-enrollment last winter. Though I did come close yesterday as a woman in her SUV almost hit my cart head on as I was crossing the lot at Costco…but she missed me by a good foot so we’re all cool…but it was close enough to make me look at my wife and say, “Wow, we almost didn’t make it.” to which she calmly replied, “That’s okay…her insurance would have covered you.”

yeah injuries caused in a car accident are generally covered by auto insurance not health insurance.

The GOP side seems to be very confident that the electorate has forgotten that the whole sequestor thing was the “big threat” that was going to make the budget negotiations to be actually carried out in a serious manner. After which the GOP appointed a bunch of hard-liners to their negotiation team and we ended up with a stupid across the board spending cut. And since then the GOP has been consistently trying to restore spending for their favored stuff, mainly defense and corporate welfare, while letting the social programs remain gutted.

I for one *DO* remember this.

I don’t think I’ve seen a throwback uniform I’ve liked yet, certainly not any of the Packers.

I’ve often wondered though, does wearing them have an effect on the quarterback? I mean, as a quarterback in the face of a pass rush, you’ve got to be somewhat trained to be scanning for open targets by friendly uniform color (things are probably happening too fast to process much more information than that). Does going to a uniform you only wear once a year slow that down?

From the article I’m getting the impression it’s a living suite—a Speaker perk as opposed to the nasty office-crashing Ryan is noted for.

Note the structure of a lot of laws excludes government facilities and its personnel—OSHA, EPA provisions, etc. They are then applied as practical by the dread Executive Orders.

Essentially kill mice and chipmunks year-round. And they get subsistence rations from my brother so their hunting is a definite addition to their diet since they eat catch. The one cat also likes hunting birds near the bird feeder, but isn’t very successful at it.

Essentially kill mice and chipmunks year-round. And they get subsistence rations from my brother so their hunting is a definite addition to their diet since they eat catch. The one cat also likes hunting birds hear the bird feeder, but isn’t very successful at it.

Although it’s illegal to let your cats out without leashes around here, there are 4 cats who use our yard as a path to their homes. We watch them trundle by carrying their prey and it definitely changes from a mix during the summer to pretty much just mice in the winter.

Are they cold evolved breeds, like the Maine Coon or just well adapted mixes?

Two domestic short hairs. One was the runt of a litter and is actually a fairly small cat. And a better hunter than the larger one. There was a third cat that disappeared* that was a very good mouser.

* - Probable road casualty since the county road he lives on is sort of busy. Plus the cats mouse hunt in the ditches, or cross it to visit the neighbors who have barns and their own cat populations.

She apparently wasn’t paying much attention in the 90s. When Hillary and Chelsea (in her awkward teenage years) were the target of such attacks.

I believe it was noted “journalist” Limbaugh who joked that Janet Reno was Chelsea’s father.

Now I actually find myself warming to the idea of Rush as a debate moderator, if only to watch him give Carly shit for being a woman who’s looking to do anything but make him a sandwich.
