Mighty fine.

They seem to be keeping a certain type of jazz fusion going. Reminds me of some of the hot 70s stuff.

And that keyboard/synth solo was off the hook. I like the reaction of the other keyboard dude next to him.

One other thing. I sure would like to know what kind of a system they use to drive all those headphones.

But, you know you’ll hear:
“Lone wolf” “No way of knowing his motivation”
“Troubled, misguided young man”
“Well, a lot of people are scared/concerned”
“What was really going on in there..who knows?

It’s December 12, there’s no snow, and it’s above freezing. Fuck the wingnuts, I’m all for doing something about climate change. My only stipulation - and I’ve been consistent on this since day one - is I don’t want us compromising quality of life. We should be able to continue to progress technologically while also increasing friendliness to the environment.

Conservative reaction to COP21: “It’s cold today! That proves climate change is a hoax! Al Gore!”

They should come to New York, where it was in the mid-60s F today (more of the same forecast for tomorrow)- and the LOW is going to be ten degrees warmer that the average high for this time of year.

Naaah, who’m I kidding? The deniers will just hoke up some other unconvincing bullshit argument (though Al Gore will almost certainly feature in that one, too!)…

What I see in Rand is wasted potential. He had a few good ideas about limiting government surveillance and authority over drugs… but they were so wrapped up in anti-abortion nonsense and kulturkampf anxiety and his daddy’s white supremacist leanings, combined with his own native spinelessness, that in the end he’ll be nothing but a footnote, in this campaign or in the Senate. Kentucky’s got enough people who are scared peeless over any kind of liberalism that he’ll keep his seat as long as he can get through the primary, but that’s looking pretty doubtful now.

So, on Facebook, I posted this video of the Syrian refugees arriving in Canada to an enthusiastic, warm welcome.

I go with Trudeau. Dump Trump!

Then, I woke up this morning to catch these comments. [ARG! They didn’t get posted! See below] The first is from a friend, who was staunchly a Trump-ist. That she’s wavering now I take as a good sign. The other two are from her friends, a married couple, the wife first then the husband. I see them as beyond all hope.

Sorry, I needed to vent.

Rand hasn’t even been able to duplicate his dad’s “success” in running for Prez.

Why? My guesses: first, he’s a boring, unlikeable douchebag.

Second, he’s not hardcore libertarian enough to attract the cult members who loved his dad.

Third, he’s not mainstream conservative enough to get the support of GOP base voters, especially since he doesn’t have the constant hard-on for war of all the other candidates.

Fourth, he’s a totally boring douchebag. This cannot be said too often.

With only a 3% showing in Iowa in a poll out today (he needed 4% or higher), I’m pretty sure its off to the kids table for Ron Paul.

Christie is doing just as badly in Iowa, so that can’t be the only factor as he will be in the “adult” debate. He’s also polling just as poorly nationally as Paul.

But CNN wants Christie on stage because he’s a fat loudmouth, and that makes for good TV. Paul, as I’ve said before, is just a smarmy boring douchebag. So nobody really cares that Paul won’t be there. But Christie gets in on the strength of his NH numbers, which are around 8%, his best showing by far in the early states.

Not surprisingly, down in SC, Christie is at 1%. And that’s not because Lindsey has a huge home field advantage. In SC, they probably like Christie’s brash style and identify with his massive girth. But he shook Obama’s hand and said “Thank you, Mr. President”. That’s an act of heresy that the GOP’s staunchest reactionaries (disproportionately clustered in the south) can’t forgive.

The NH polls are also the only things keeping Kasich and Fiorina at the first-string debate, and Fiorina’s not there by much (the WBUR poll has her at 3%, but CNN has her at 5). But the GOP wants someone with XX chromosomes there, and thus Fiorina gets in by the whims of the private entity rather than objective external measures, which is what libertarianism is all about, so what is Paul whining for?

I had a bad feeling about Bush from the start. Not bragging, just stating what 13 year old me thought. Do your friends realize that it’s not up to them to decide whether or not Trump becomes President? There are millions of other Americans who would never let that happen and believe or not, we also get to vote. I doubt the majority of people in America are going to vote someone as bigoted and obnoxious and unqualified as Trump into the White House. Your friends, like typical Rightwingers, are delusional and self-centered. Trump cannot win with just White votes. Period.

I think he got an earful from some other friends, because his latest comment about Trump is less enthusiastic.

That is really intense.

Person after person received an engulfing hug from our commander in chief. He’d say, “Tell me about your son… . Tell me about your daughter,” and then hold pictures of the lost beloved as their parents described favorite foods, television shows, and the sound of their laughter. For the younger siblings of those who had passed away—many of them two, three, or four years old, too young to understand it all—the president would grab them and toss them, laughing, up into the air, and then hand them a box of White House M&M’s, which were always kept close at hand. In each room, I saw his eyes water, but he did not break.

Aaron can preach to me any time. One of the very best Sports Night episodes was The Six Southern Gentlemen of Tennessee, about the confederate flag. And that was from 1998:

In the history of the South, there’s much to celebrate. And that flag is a desecration of all of it. It’s a banner of hatred and separatism. It’s a banner of ignorance and violence and a war that pitted brother against brother, and to ask young black men and women, young Jewish men and women, Asians, Native Americans, to ask Americans to walk beneath its shadow is a humiliation of irreducible proportions. And we all know it.

Lindsey barely moves the needle in SC. It’s all TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP. Carson’s still in 2nd, but dropping like a stone—then Cruz and Rubio, but Trump’s lapping them. Lindsey’s holding firm at about 2+%, just behind Fiorina and just ahead of Huckabee. No native son love for Lindsey here. Sniff.

CNN’s standard is that anyone over 4% in either Iowa or New Hampshire gets a main debate podium, and that’s bar Christie clears with ease in New Hampshire.

I agree, though, that CNN wants on on the main stage because he makes for more drama. IMO it is especially desired that he fight with Trump, as both are loud and brash and their volume will be mistaken by some voters for conviction.

In other words, CNN is trying to bail the GOP out by lowering the bar enough to let any candidate they think might have a shot at surviving Trump and courting moderate voters in the general. If that means putting in a step for Christie so he can haul his ass over the bar that’s already at knee level, then so be it.

I think it means CNN doesn’t care about the election process at all and is more concerned with dramatic reality entertainment. If they could they’d have Mark Burnett produce the damn “show” so they can get more viewers and dollars out of it all.

What I appreciate about Barkley is that he’s willing to offer his opinion on edgy issues in and out of sports the way someone like Michael Jordan never has. Barkley, for example has been adamant that sexuality shouldn’t mean shit when it comes to teammates and that every professional athlete has had a gay teammate at one point so this whole shower paranoia is stupid. Now granted Charles wasn’t a larger than life icon like Michael is so I guess he can afford to take stands but I nonetheless appreciate that about him. He’s a good friend of one of my favorite sportswriters and casters, Michael Wilbon too. I really enjoy Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser on PTI.

Just a moment to recommend a book…

I’m almost done with Steve Silberman’s Neurotribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity. All I can say is wow. This is a really important book, IMO. There’s a lot of history there I didn’t know, how autism came to be a diagnosis, stuff about Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger and Nazi Germany, how different therapies came into being, and he posits the theory that autism is a natural variation in humans, not some freakish flaw. I really recommend it, even if some of it is hard to read (the parts about the Nazis is horrifying as you might guess, but damn near as bad was American attitudes and how our medical professionals dealt with issues of mental illness and disability), but it’s an important book. Well researched, it took him over 5 years to write. If you or someone you love is on the spectrum, or if you just want to understand autism a little better, it’s probably one of the best books written on the subject.

Hello all,

It’s hard to say. We haven’t seen a major party implosion since the mid 1850’s. It was slavery that did the Whigs in. It’s really hard to say since Republicans do maintain majorities in both Houses of Congress, the state legislatures, and governor mansions but I would argue that they have benefited heavily from low turn out. Frankly the GOP where it’s growing if at all is growing in parts of the population declining. Meanwhile the Dems have made strong gains in growing parts i.e. single women, Latinos, and Asians.

At least both of the new ones are opening at 6 am. The last one (which is now out of business) didn’t open until 8. That had to miss the morning, going to work crowd. Bakeries need to be open early in the morning.

237
HappyWarrior  Dec 13, 2015 • 8:41:27am

Frankly what needs to be said is the difference between the establishment and TP types really isn’t ideological. It’s more on style. It’s not like when the Whig party imploded in the 1850’s, there were serious differences of opinions on slavery between people like say Abraham Lincoln and the wing of the party that accepted slavery’s legality as a way of keeping the country together or who owned slaves themselves. Or to use a later example when the Democratic Party became more outspoken in favor of civil rights and the Southern/conservative wing of the party remained opposed. I’m not sure what will happen if Trump is the GOP nominee and or plays a big role. What we are seeing is the ugly face of right wing populism bear its ugly head and I’m thankful for two things- One the country is diverse enough to reject it for president and two the economy is in good enough shape.

Hello all,

We’re on course for another 1912-type election where the GOP splits in two or maybe even three parts—Jesus, Wall Street and Libertarians. I got a gut feeling that Trump will come in with the most delegates but he won’t get the nomination because he doesn’t have a majority. The rest will be split between Rubio, Cruz, Kasich and others. The party bosses will draft either Ryan, Thune, Baker or Romney as a last-ditch effort. Trump’s people will walk out. They may actually seize the GOP line in a bunch of states. The resulting chaos creates an opening for the Libertarian Party to make a move to replace the GOP as a major party. We may see the GOP wind up like the British Liberals did between 1931-89 as a rump party with a handful of seats in the South and Rocky Mountain states.

Not great like it used to be. Not funny like TRUMP®. Let me tell you, their best ratings are when TRUMP® is on it. Well, I’ll never do that show again. I don’t know why I did it the last time anyway. We’ll make America great without SNL. They haven’t been great in years. It’s been down down down since 1975. And really, aren’t there too many dark people on that show anyway? My favorite O’Rourke bit is “You say you don’t want America to be the world’s policeman? So tell me, when someone needs help, like when Iraq invades Kuwait, you gonna call Sweden?!?!”

Libertarians to me suffer from smartest guy in the room syndrome. Maybe many of them have read more books about political theory, economics, etc than I have but what I think many of them like leftist and rightist absolutists refuse to get is that politics is ultimately about people. Doesn’t matter if it’s something as small as a paved wrong in a small rural town that allows the farmers to transport goods easier or something as massive as a major health care plan like ACA.

re: #238 Joe Bacon

One of Chuck Todds panelists, Jerry Seib, Wall Street Journal brought up an interesting concept regarding Kasich and Ohio.

He said if Kasich can manage to stay in the fight and carry Ohio, Ohio’s large number of delegates would be currency Kasich could carry into the convention and use as a bargaining chip for a brokered convention.

Interesting. Problem is, I don’t think Kasich can carry his own state. I have a feeling Ohio GOPeers will go Trump.

Sad isn’t it?

I just did that (62F here). Got a coffee and took a walk through downtown (small town PA). New bakery opening in the old train station. The second one to open in the last 2 months. The other is on the corner behind my sons’ house. I will have to get to each of them at some point to see what they offer.

At least both of the new ones are opening at 6 am. The last one (which is now out of business) didn’t open until 8. That had to miss the morning, going to work crowd. Bakeries need to be open early in the morning.

I generally love small local bakeries. However, recent diet change to try to reduce (if not completely cut out) bread and starches had limited my visits to them. Simply too tempting if I go into one.

I think he can, the question is if he will. But Trump will be out in force since if Kasich takes Ohio or Rubio takes Florida then Trump’s path to the nomination gets harder.

No. If I remember correctly, he was uncontested in his own party. I think the Ohio GOP knew he could win because of Obama in the WH and previous Governor Ted Strickland didn’t run a real strong campaign in the face of the Obama hatred.

Funny thing is, now Strickland is doing decent (so far) against Rob Portman in the 2016 Senator race. Go figure.

I’m not kidding. Have you ever watched him speak. Zzzzzzzzzzzz.

Here he is speaking on his change of heart on gay marriage. This issue alone could kill him politically. Conservatives probably see it as a sell out. Liberals saw it as a cheap maneuver only because his own son came out gay. It pissed me off because he was only thinking of himself and not of others and all the crap they’ve had to endure conservatives thinking like this. And his speech is just so slow and dull in my opinion.

Yeah I remember seeing his name come up for VP for Romney. I have to agree with you about his about face on gay marriage. I mean one part of me appreciates he’s not Alan Keyes and didn’t disown his son but another part of me is pissed off since we know full well if his son weren’t gay, he would still be against gay marriage. That’s what pisses me off about conservatives in general though. They’re often against certain liberal things until it hits home. Same thoughts about Dick Cheney too btw. I don’t give him much credit especially since he didn’t speak up when his boss and the RNC declared war on gay marriage to ensure Bush’s re-election. and we know Cheney is anything but a quiet guy when it comes to the issues. He seems like a pretty dull, boring guy. That seems to be my observation with most prominent Ohio Republicans not named Jim Jordan.

Most of those look to be old hunting rifles, which are not exactly crime guns. Some pistols, but even then most of them looked to be junk or just gun parts. The only guns i saw that a criminal might favor were a revolver and two semi-auto pistols.

Shame about the old shotgun. Gun dealers need to be proactive when buybacks like that are announced, to see if they can secure old and collectible guns for resale.an astute dealer could likely have given the owner 2-3 times what the cops gave him then turned a good profit on the resale.

The firearm dealers would probably need to get some local ordinances and/or laws changed in order to successfully execute this-it may not be worth the hassle for the dealers to participate.

If these gun buybacks are ‘no questions asked’ there is the risk that they could be destroying evidence-but I suspect that would be extremely small.

I traded my Prius for a RAV4 simply because it sucks in the snow-even with Nokian WRG3 tyres. The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid actually performs better than the stock RAV4 based on preliminary reports, and only adds $700 on the sticker.

I’ve owned nothing but 4X4s & AWD since ‘84.

I wouldn’t know how to drive a 2WD on the ice/snow any more.

I’ve heard some say Tony’s meant to reprsetnt the excesses of the 80’s. I guess having not lived that, it’s hard for me to relate. I find the movie entertaining, don’t get me wrong but I really feel Pacino’s best acting is his transformation from war hero Michael Corleone to Don Michael Corleone, cold blooded Mafia don one of the best character developments I’ve seen in film.

Oh, I agree. That gave my ex-wife the chills. Brilliant acting.

They really should fire them at the gun lab and see if the bullets or serial numbers can shed any light.

I appreciate the subtleties of the Sonny character the more I watch the movie. Yes, he’s a hothead but he also loves his sister and family very much. He loses his temper with Tom and says he’s not really Vito’s son but quickly realizes he was out of bounds. And man Cazale as Fredo, it’s such a shame he died, he was one of my favorite actors ever.

So question; dark humor hahaha but why do you find it acceptable to joke about setting people on fire. Seriously people that work at the VA “bureaucrats” are just that people doing a job. Some are good some not great and most just doing a job. Many are veterans themselves and you joke about setting them on fire because you don’t like bureaucrats and because you have decided to treat politics as nothing but a team sport and the VA is an imperfect organization and since it’s not about ra team or killing the other so you could give zero shits about it. And doing so have lost the thread. You use veterans, or guns, or the sexier military equipment as totems in your little sports contest. You ignore that there is no bureaucracy in the country larger than the DOD but you choose to ignore that because you also fetishize the military so they don’t count in your disdain for bureaucrats. And no I didn’t want my first comment on this board to be a bit of a rant but joking about setting someone who works at the VA on fire was just beyond my personal pale.

I think the Republican establishment sees that the Democratic base embraced a fairly young son of an immigrant who made the Senate and then the presidency and thinks they can do the same with Rubio. The problem with Rubio is he’s not Obama. He’s nowhere near as intelligent, thoughtful, or as knowledgible in policy as Obama is.
