Did I say a “version” of Sting’s classic song? It’s actually more like a demolition. I actually had to laugh out loud in a couple of spots. Great stuff from jazz trio The Bad Plus.

I don’t get it.

I fully expected to see one Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner run up on stage and start smacking these guys for their reinterpretation of his baby.

We had a customer at work last night who was a diehard Trump supporter. His account was flagged with the following:

NOTE: THIS ACCOUNT IS BEING MONITORED FOR EXCESSIVE ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR.

He really does draw the worst of the worst it seems.

I think the fun is that the basic song is a simple jumping-off point for jazzy hijink riffs. Imagine Joe Satriani kicking down the door, running onstage, and shredding mightily in the middle of the song… Same idea. Maybe. I’m not grabbed by most jazz.

I was hoping they’d jump off into the Peanuts theme, personally.

I’d like to see a cover album where the following bands reinterpret Every Breath You Take as they see fit - pulled from my MP3 collection in alphabetical order:

AC/DC, Front Line Assembly, Gary Numan, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Nightwish, Nine Inch Nails, Sisters of Mercy, and Wumpscut.

Just discovered that Chuck Johnson’s horrible blog installs an “evercookie” in your browser, a type of cookie that’s very hard to delete and is used to track people. This is a very paranoid guy.

I recommend only using Tor to visit his site. I don’t know why he’s doing this, but it can’t be good.

Just signed a petition to get a Democrat on the ballot for our state congressional district. He’s jumping in late because no one else has signed up for this district for the Dems. It’s a pretty red county, and he has to get 800 signatures to turn in by Monday to get on the ballot. Small businessman, has never run for office before. I don’t know how many volunteers he has going door-to-door for him, but we supplied two signatures and we wish him all the luck in the world.

Will Rogers comes to mind, as always: “I am not a member of an organized political party — I’m a Democrat.”

re: #13 Barefoot Grin

That’s the hitch - evercookies don’t show up in the list of cookies. But I did some more checking and it looks like the main thing he’s doing is using something called the HTML5 Canvas method to create a browser fingerprint. (Actually, I say “he’s doing” this, but he doesn’t have the skill to do it himself - he’s probably running some kind of plugin or web service.)

It could also be coming from something else he installed at his site, like an ad or some other external service. The best way to handle this is just to always use the Tor browser to go to his website - Tor will warn you if a site is trying to use the HTML5 Canvas method to track you, and let you block it.

The really alarming bit was that mobile Safari (i.e. the browser on your iPad or iPhone) cannot remove an Evercookie unless you fucking jailbreak the device. At least, as of the writing of the Ars Technica articles back in 2013.

I knew about Flash cookies (those goddam things are like cockroaches) which is why I use Flashblock, but I have gone back and forth with NoScript, because while it does increase my security, for day-to-day use, the modern web is soot&ashes without JavaScript.

Sigh.

BTW - there’s a really serious post by Thanos about “where does all the white rage go after Trump loses” over in the sidebar. It’s a topic that I have been thinking about a lot.

My response (crossposted here):

Circular firing squad. Put a group of paranoid, angry people with assault rifles into a public place, have lots of screaming and yelling going on, people pushing against barricades, cops yelling back and shoving with their big shields, a few batons smack heads, someone screams, a finger curls on a trigger …

It is in the seconds after the first shot rings out that anyone in Cleveland who has half a brain should fall to the ground and roll behind the nearest heavy concrete object.

That’s a lesson that I learned. Painfully. During riots in South America, more than 25 years ago.

The Ghost of the Spaghetti Weevil  Apr 2, 2016 • 1:49:30pm

re: #33 ObserverArt

Oh, so he is a very intelligent dumbass.

Nope.

A raw IQ number tells you nothing unless you know the test taken. For example, a grownup taking a child’s IQ test will score high. Also, with the internet, there’s a ton of “tests” that don’t have any psychometric validity at all.

Second, part of knowing the test is knowing what is tests. Excellent spatial reasoning scores don’t make you a good accountant, and good computation scores don’t make you a geneticist.

Perhaps even more importantly, the basic skills evaluated by IQ tests don’t actually trump a learned and practice skillset. So “I have a high IQ” actually means nothing when it comes to a discipline with a deep, learned-over-years specialized skillset. Which is why internet assholes touting their IQs are generally spectacularly wrong.

Third, a lot of IQ tests are more developed to study low- to marginal- intelligence, not to evaluate above-average intelligence. So that “high IQ” is actually less meaningful on its face.

He’s talking about hazing. He uses terms like “violation of the taboo” and “intended to strip away all niceties of conversation,” but what he really means is hazing. He thinks it builds “intimacy & cohesion” because that’s the effect hazing is intended to produce among young, predominately male, gang-mentality subcultures. The abuse is both part of the self-selection process, anybody who won’t put up with it opts out, and is the mechanism by which those who stay are brainwashed into thinking they’re stronger for having allowed themselves to endure it.

Yesterday I had the temerity to tweet Jake Tapper as I had the misfortune you seeing him interview Adams who suggested Trump will beat Hillary because people will see him as daddy and Hillary as mommy…and who do you go to when times are tough?

This was the exchange:

So Adams point is “I am not sexist, I am saying EVERYONE ELSE is sexist”. Not only do I disagree, but I found it to be the most idiotic analysis of the political situation I have heard this season (and that is saying something) and not even worthy of the toilet bowl that is cable news.

Anyway, I am still getting HOW DARE YOU TRY TO STIFLE FREE SPEECH!!11! etc.

Trump is the symptom of GOP rot. He didn’t get support from the GOP as a whole unless they were already there. In fact, Cruz and Kasich hold similar positions on Islamophobia, women, abortion, etc.

And yes, Trump’s gone through every abortion position in 48 hours, but the one that suggests punishing women is the most accurate given the way the GOP wants to disassociate itself from it *wink wink*.

re: #67 goddamnedfrank

I admit not having any experience at all with your Boot, but I picked this up very early on in my military career, and it has absolutely defined my leadership style ever since.

SCHOFIELD’S DEFINITION OF DISCIPLINE

The discipline which makes the soldiers of a free country reliable in battle is not to be gained by harsh or tyrannical treatment. On the contrary, such treatment is far more likely to destroy than to make an army. It is possible to impart instructions and to give commands in such a manner and in such a tone of voice as to inspire in the soldier no feeling but and intense desire to obey, while the opposite manner and tone of voice cannot fail to excite strong resentment and a desire to disobey. The one mode or other of dealing with subordinates springs from a corresponding spirit in the breast of the commander. He who feels the respect which is due others cannot fail to inspire in them regard for himself; while he who feels, and hence manifests, disrespect toward other, especially his inferiors, cannot fail to inspire hatred against himself. -

But, I work a slightly different problem set than most of the military, so I admit YMMV.

It wasn’t the wind gusts that made me freak…it was the snow (albeit a very small amount) falling at 45F.

Obviously it’s cold up there…way above those gauges.

I always keep in mind one of the largest snow storms I remember was about 9 to 12” we got April 7th, 1987 in about 5 hours time. Huge snowflakes that almost made it impossible to see the sky through the snow. It was like curtains.

It was pretty much all gone April 8th when the temps shot back up to 60° the next afternoon. What a mess that all was.

Our band was going to play a party in a cool old carriage house behind one of the old homes about a half mile closer to downtown from where I live. We had just gotten everything set up and flicker…flicker…out goes the power. It never came back on that night.

So. Going to Furby’s page via Tor, there’s an elaborate Captcha system in place to verify your humanity before you can even see the front page. Never mind.

That’s a Cloudflare thing, not something Chuck did.

It’s annoying, but I don’t go to his site very often so when I actually want to see something he’s spewed I’ll put up with the captcha, rather than allow his tracking system to work.

good afternoon Lizards, happy Saturday. Decided to get creative and made some smoked salsa with corn today. It was great when it was first done, even better now that it has sat for a while:

When you add tags to an uploaded image in your Image Library now, they’re also saved directly into the image file as an EXIF list of keywords. This way, if you download your image library, which you can do if you go to the Image Library link in the registered user menu at the top right of the page, the images will contain the tags you’ve added.

Just a way to export the tags along with the images when you download, so you might be able to use them in some other program that reads EXIF data.

The Rage Furby must have visited his cocaine dealer - he’s out of control, posting one hateful crappy article after another. He just posted another attack on Michelle Fields, this time claiming his “police sources” told him Fields’ boyfriend’s family are pressuring the police department to prosecute Corey Lewandowski.

He’s fucking insane if he thinks people don’t see what he’s doing. He’s trying to shove his way into the story by totally making things up.

If you are a Bernie Bro and willing to stay home and let this guy become POTUS instead of voting for Hillary, you are actually worse than a Trump supporter…much worse.

He’s the epitome of wanting to ‘run the government like a business’ - his business. NDAs, an ‘aura of personality’ (gag), pie-in-the-sky projections.

We as a country would fail so hard, we’d get sick of failing.

OT Drive-by:

Remember my comment yesterday about an Egyptian court banning demolition of churches and basing it on Sharia? I just saw the story below today, about a man in Malaysia whose parents converted to Islam when he was a child.

Note: Bidayuh is apparently “the collective name for several indigenous groups” who, according to Wikipedia, are primarily Christian. Syariah (as in “Syariah Court” in the article) is the the Malay spelling of Sharia.

Unknown to me until about 15 minutes ago, Malaysia has a dual justice system with the Syariah Court having jurisdiction only over Muslims and only in matters of personal law. In the states where Sharia criminal laws exist, they’re “limited to imposing fines for an amount not more than RM 5000, and imprisonment to not more than 3 years.” Sounds confusing, but I guess it works for them.

Court rules Sarawak Muslim convert has right to be Christian

KUCHING: A Sarawakian Bidayuh who was converted to Islam as a child has been granted a declaration that he is a Christian by the High Court here.

In her decision on a judicial review brought by Azmi Mohamad Azam @ Roneey, judge Datuk Yew Jen Kie said this was in accordance with the applicant’s constitutional right to freedom of religion as he was now an adult.

She also ordered the National Registration Department (NRD) to change the man’s name to Roneey Rebit and his religion from Islam to Christianity in his identity card.

In his application, Roneey had sought a declaration that he is a Christian, a letter of release from Islam from the Sarawak Islamic Religious Department and Sarawak Islamic Council, and orders compelling the NRD to change his name and religion in his identity card and its records.

The state religious authorities did not object to issuing the letter but the NRD had insisted on a letter of release and order from the Syariah Court.

Yew held that Roneey’s case was not one of jurisdiction but raised constitutional issues with regard to his right to religious freedom.

“He does not need a Syariah Court order to release him from Islam because freedom of religion is his constitutional right and only he can exercise that right,” she said on Thursday. […]

AFAIK no one is rioting over it or anything like that. Things are changing, slowly but surely. Okay, gotta go finish my timesheets now. Ugh.

Jamie Wienstein was the first person to talk about the Michelle Fields-Corey Lewandowski incident.

Why didn’t Weinstein publish a story about it on Daily Caller?

Uhhh, probably because of his relationship with one of the parties involved, dumbass.

That is literally as good of an explanation for their behavior as I have heard!

And if you don’t raise money for/give money to other Dems & don’t show up at mid terms to VOTE for other Dems then YOU ARE NOT REAL DEMS.

But, but GEORGE CLOONEY!! You know he’s only having that fundraiser so Hillary will lower his taxes. Fucking George Clooney—about the most generous person around. If I get one more Bernie & Co. email telling me how superior Bernie is because he doesn’t hold fundraisers, I’m going to puke.

Now here’s a conspiracy theory I could float (if I were a lunatic like the Berniacs at kos). I never signed up to be on Bernie’s mailing list. I never received any Bernie email until the “data breach” where they specifically looked at South Carolina targets. Hmmmmmm.

(In actuality, they all had access to the SC Dem info, so I know how they got my stuff, but I saw many such conspiracy theories floated by Berniacs that Hillary’s team must have STOLEN Bernie’s lists, because they had never signed up to get anything from Hillary.)

Trump has turned himself into the representative of angry white men, pissed off at a world that confuses them and eager to lash out at somebody. They’re afraid to openly be hateful and ugly and racist, but Trump is doing it for them.
