Watch Live: Trump Rants Again in Fayetteville

I can hardly believe his handlers let him out of his cage after the disastrous comments earlier, but here he is ranting again in North Carolina.

As I write, he’s talking about how easy it’s going to be to “build the wall,” and of course “Mexico’s gonna pay for it.” He’s comparing it to the Great Wall of China (which, by the way, failed to stop any invasions).

The GOP simply does not have that kind of decisiveness. Even now, none of them can bring themselves to publicly denounce this madman.

No, our salvation will have to come from the Secret Service, but it’s clear that they don’t know how to deal with the fact that a major-party candidate for President of the United States has committed an open-and-shut felony. There should be handcuffs around his wrists now, but they don’t think they can “interfere” in an election.

Josh Marshall had it right, Trump is being dominated rather than the reverse and his personality will not allow that to happen. He’ going to allow his rage to control and keep making gaffes like this, further destroying his campaign. The guy who insists he’s got thick skin is responding to a woman beating him at something with primal screams and increased talk about violence. It makes the accusations of spousal abuse and rape that much more believable.

Statements like this make a tough and dangerous job a lot more difficult. I believe the SS are gonna do something to let DT know that they do not approve…

Yeah, they should have one of their “plain clothes” agents rush the podium and they should be a little slow to “contain the threat”. Let the asshole shit himself on stage.*

Imagine what he’s gonna be like when it’s 9 days to the election and Hillary is still leading by better than 5% in the polls.

And if he is unaware of how dangerous such “jokes” are that only proves he is too oblivious to lead our country. What could possibly go wrong if Trump “joked” about using nukes?

Well, since he’s not a white Christian ‘Murrican gunowner, he’s to blame for what his son did, whereas if he WERE a white Christian ‘Murrican gunowner, his son’s act would be “Lone Wolf, probably never know why, too soon to talk about gun violence…” and not the his fault.

In calmer political waters, it’s primary night in four states. The first one is Vermont, where Democrats Sue Minter and Matt Dunne are the main candidates for governor. Dunne claims to be a Sandbagger, while Minter does not. Dunne’s very slightly ahead in the early going.

Here’s a question for the media: If Trump can’t be held to the same expectations that we hold other politicians, how can we expect to hold him to the same as other presidents? Just how low a bar are you prepared for set for yourselves for the next 4 years? “Yeah, Trump started WWIII, but we hit the other guy worse than he hit us”?

That C-Span comment from a trump supporter I posted a day or so ago…

paraphrased from memory:

I think we might have nuclear war with Trump. I hope we win.

Has Trump considered what’s going to happen if one of his dunces takes a shot at Clinton now?

Most of his endorsements will dry up overnight. The Secret Service and the FBI are going to start paying a lot closer attention to his goons. Anyone with any sort of connection to the shooter(s) will spend a few years in the federal pen. All of his business interests will desert him. The NRA will get RICO’d into a deep and unmarked grave. Twitter (horror of horrors) will tac-nuke his followers off their service. Police attention for white supremacists will get painfully hot. And Republicans will curse Trump’s name forever as the man who gave the presidency, both houses of Congress, and the Supreme Court to the Democrats, who were then inspired to enact every possible liberal reform as a tribute to Clinton.

If Trump weren’t a moron, he’d know this. If Reince and the rest of the GOP gang weren’t such cowards, they’d already be giving him the business with whole duffel bags full of crowbars.

Not sure if others have brought this up, but if you read the Trump statement or listen to it, it’s talking about Clinton appointing judges. This assumes that she’s already president. The need to activate voters at that point is past. Yet that’s the time when Trump thinks a 2d Amendment solution is called for?

And I also think that the statement could be parsed as not only a threat against Clinton, but against future judges/appointees who Trump insists will take away their 2A rights.

Meanwhile, the NRA has come out with guns blazing in support of Trump.

Because of course they did.

Anyone with any sort of connection to the shooter(s) will spend a few years in the federal pen. All of his business interests will desert him. The NRA will get RICO’d into a deep and unmarked grave. Twitter (horror of horrors) will tac-nuke his followers off their service. Police attention for white supremacists will painfully hot.

Unfortunately, I don’t think any of this is true.

If Hillary were to be clearly, blatantly assassinated tomorrow, it would make a lot of news, but I very much doubt that it would precipitate any sort of significant electoral change or backlash.

I say this because, most likely, it would be a white male with a gun who did it. Most likely it would be a somewhat disturbed and isolated individual radicalised through FOX and right wing media. And, as we have seen, when isolated, radicalised white males with guns kill someone, there is no backlash at all. Nothing changes. No domino effect takes place in any policy at all, much less gun policy. That is now normal in American society. That’s how we live.

Sure, you might think that assassinating a presidential candidate after her opponent subtly called for it is unprecedented, and it is. But many things that once might have been thought unthinkable are now normalised. US media has given everything the flavour of entertainment, to the point that things that were once unthinkable now barely impact public consciousness, because it doesn’t seem real. It’s entertainment. A Presidential candidate alluding to his penis size on television was just entertainment. The same man calling for outside dictatorships to meddle in US elections was the same, just entertainment. Twenty first-graders getting gunned down in their school was a shocking plot twist, but it had no direct impact on most people’s lives, so it means as much to them as a similar horrible thing happening in Game of Thrones. And if there was no backlash to twenty first-graders getting murdered, I guarantee you there will be no backlash to the murder of someone who the American media has trained everyone to hate for three decades. None whatsoever.

The assassin would go to prison, the media would talk about it for a few weeks, and intersperse it liberally with questions about how this impacts the Trump campaign. Republican politicians would make all the appropriate public noises and would redouble their plans to retain political power, sensing the opportunity. There would be a sudden upsurge of media interest in Tim Kaine as they try to find out if he would be interesting enough to make good headlines. Probably he wouldn’t, and Trump would go back to the top of the news. And that’s it. He might win, or he might not, but nothing else would change. The NRA would continue to dominate the political landscape. Nobody who might have subtly encouraged such a thing will face any consequences, because nobody ever does for inciting radicalised, isolated white males to shoot people.

The American people are too desensitised, the American media too irresponsible, guns are too sacred, and Hillary Clinton is too hated.

But it’s really irrelevant what Trump actually meant, because enough people will hear Trump’s comments and think he’s calling for people to take up arms against Clinton, her judges or both. Though most of the people hearing that call may claim he was joking, given what we know about people taking up arms in this country, there will undoubtedly be some people who think he was serious and consider the possibility.

In other words, what Trump just did is engage in so-called stochastic terrorism. This is an obscure and non-legal term that has been occasionally discussed in the academic world for the past decade and a half, and it applies with precision here. Stochastic terrorism, as described by a blogger who summarized the concept several years back, means using language and other forms of communication “to incite random actors to carry out violent or terrorist acts that are statistically predictable but individually unpredictable.”

A friend and I had this conversation the other day.

We both have friends - both separately and mutual friends, some we’ve known for decades - who are totally on board the Trump Train. And you just cannot talk to them any more. They don’t want to hear anything but how great Trump is. And even if you try being a little tactful, they go from zero to nuclear rage in no time flat.

They don’t want to discuss. They want a fucking fight. And once they start rolling, there’s no stopping them. They will stomp years-old friendships to defend their emperor god.

The saddest thing about this election is that I’ll never be able to look at quite a few friends the same way as I did before Trump came down that escalator.

I swear, if I ever get within spitting distance of Trump, I will not miss the opportunity to empty half a smoker’s lung on that prick’s expensive suit.

It is still a net win for DT…all this haggling over what he said/meant means less talk about how he totally lacks the knowledge, background or experience to be Chief Executive.

You keep bringing up this point, and I have to admit I don’t understand why. His lack of knowledge, background, or experience are a *feature* for his true supporters, and pointing this out will only harden their loyalty to him.

As for those who are more on the fence, pointing out the absurd shit he says and what it says about his mindset highlights the aforementioned lack of credentials. The people who are going to vote for him because he’s an R (not because they are also racist, misogynistic, homophobic, ethnocentric assholes) don’t *care* about his policy positions. They assume that because he’s an R, his positions line up with theirs, ignoring all evidence to the contrary.

There is nothing in defeating Donald Trump that can be found on debating him on the ‘issues’. You have to make him toxic to the semi-rational voter. I would think that after the primaries/convention this is pretty obvious.

I get the point, but those are British Challenger 2 tanks with Brit owned Apache Longbow helicopters. Not American tanks.

In truth, determined people with small arms can make life hell for an occupying army. We found that out in several places. The insurgents usually have initiative and can operate in all kinds of places where you would never use an open country MBT.

I sort of knew I shouldn’t have watched it. I should probably listen to that little voice warning me away from this kind of stuff. I used to respect Penn and Teller for the “Bullshit” show. Now he’s spreading the same kind of bullshit he used to debunk.

Sad!

Actually, if you go back and watch Bullshit and apply the same skepticism that P&T supposedly promote, it’s stunning how many holes jump out in their narratives. The second-hand smoke segment is particularly cringe-worthy.

It’s also helpful when listening to Penn speak, keep in mind he identifies as anarcho-capitalist. Basically, imagine a more irritating strain of libertarianism that makes Gary Johnson look sane.

284
Great White Snark  Aug 9, 2016 • 6:54:18pm

19 people shot in Chicago today. Mass shooting? No because not one incident, but in fact a bunch of separate places and moments when the urge to shoot overcame all sense and sensibility. Is that a coincidence? Yes. Is that horrible coincidence instructive anyway? Oh HELL YES it is.

Monica Mares, 36, and her son Caleb Peterson, 19, of Clovis, New Mexico, face up to 18 months in prison if found guilty of incest
The couple said that they are willing to risk everything to be together

They were reunited for the first time last year after reconnecting over Facebook

Okay, this is disgusting and perverted stuff to me, but serious jail time for a relationship between consenting adults seems like something out of the dark ages. Beck called Alharbi an “armed and dangerous” terrorist and referred to him as the “money man” and “the guy who actually paid for it” even after top officials said Alharbi had nothing to do with the bombing, according to the lawsuit. Alharbi was questioned but cleared within days…”

re: #263 makeitstop

I really think it comes down to weakness. They want a strongman. Really really bad.

sad as fuck to see our people so damn brainwashed.

The other issue I see is that there are some who really think the deficit is a real problem - that somehow we’re suddenly going to collapse because of it and so on. Meanwhile, that person also thinks that the John Birch Society has some good ideas… < face palm >

So he’s going to vote for Trump because he’s the only slightly good alternative?

I don’t go off on him, not going to change anything anyway, but it’s just part of that 27% insanity that’s out there. The other fellow with him was ok with him voting for Trump (not going to matter much anyway, he says) but if he gets called for polls please tell him he’s voting for Johnson so to help get him above that 15% for the debates. I’m not sure what good that would do - but then both went off on a rant about how “life liberty and the pursuit of property” was really what the declaration of Independance ment and how both major parties were scared of those who “understood” that. Meanwhile I’m just thinking, hey don’t start blatting about “admiralty courts” or flag fringe… sheesh.

His right-wing opponents just kept delegitimizing him as a “traitor” and “a Nazi” for wanting to make peace with the Palestinians and give back part of the Land of Israel. Of course, all is fair in politics, right? And they had God on their side, right? They weren’t actually telling anyone to assassinate Rabin. That would be horrible.

But there are always people down the line who don’t hear the caveats. They just hear the big message: The man is illegitimate, the man is a threat to the nation, the man is the equivalent of a Nazi war criminal. Well, you know what we do with people like that, don’t you? We kill them.

And that’s what the Jewish extremist Yigal Amir did to Rabin. Why not? He thought he had permission from a whole segment of Israel’s political class.”

I don’t think Ryan has to worry about being reelected. His major problem is his buddies in the Freedumb Caucus in the House who appear to have the long knives out and ready to stab him in the back when they return from recess. I saw them headline a show when the second album had just come out. They were brilliant. Honeyman-Scott played everything on the records and more. Chambers was so steady. Fardon was gone, playing the rock star that the band once stood steadfastly against.

Chrissie was just angry. Brilliant. But by that point she knew that the band was out of control, and you could tell that she knew she was powerless to stop what was happening. She spent most of the set yelling at Farndon and baiting the crowd.

But they were so good. And inside of two years, half the band was dead.

You’re killin’ me here. See, I knew Adam Horvitz when he was a little kid and I was already messing with middle age. He was besties with the son of a friend of mine who played with him in a noise band for a while before leaving just before the Beasties became the Beasties with License. No idea whether my friend’s kid regretted playing the Pete Best role of his generation or not.

That’s awesome! I went to many many Beastie Boys concerts in my younger years. Just to show how young they were when they started, I am 42 and Adrock is 49. And I’ve been listening to Beastie Boys for what I consider “my whole life”. Paul’s Boutique is the best album ever produced :)

My father was a rock and roll radio disc jockey in the 50s and 60s. He brought a lot of promo records home for me.

My dad did the media buying for the company he worked for, so I got tons of demos as well. Loved looking at what the djs would designate as what they thought would be the hit side vs. the b side.

I was also big on the Drifters, Platters, Sam Cooke, Joe and Eddie—ah memories.

I’m beginning to fear I’m the oldest fucker on this site.

First album, Stones, “Flowers,” for fuck’s sake.

I think the first album I bought myself was ‘Introducing Herman’s Hermits’. I was 10 years old and already had Beatles 65 and the Hard Day’s Night albums that I’d gotten as gifts.

The first stereo album I bought was ‘Stop Stop Stop’ by The Hollies, which I bought as a birthday present for my sister. I still like that album. I was mad because the stereo version cost 40 cents more than the mono, but they were out of mono pressings.

My sisters and I were more into 45s until Sgt. Pepper came out. I remember becoming a record collector the day that my older sister came home with ‘Led Zeppelin 1’, ‘Bayou Country’ by CCR, and ‘Best of Cream’. I was floored.

First CDs I bought were from a used record store that was just starting to stock used CDs. ‘Led Zeppelin 3’ and U2 ‘War’. I was on the way home from buying a CD player.

My first live concert was Def Leppard during their Hysteria tour. My older sister got sick and couldn’t go. Mom says to dad “Take your son.” I was four or five, don’t remember much other than it was really loud.

Same thing happened two years later. Dad has tickets for Grateful Dead at Mile High Stadium, mom was supposed to go. She got sick and said to dad “Take your son.”

I smelled burning cannabis for the first time that night, up in the cheap seats. Again, I don’t remember much other than it was loud and everybody was standing up. I remember a really long drum solo that I thought was boring as all hell.

Nice thing is I can tell people I’ve seen Grateful Dead when Jerry was still around.

Yes to all of that.

Look, I’m gonna sound like some kind of namedropper now, but I’ve told this story before here.

In the late 60s and very early 70s I was in San Francisco and became what I guess you might call friendly passing acquaintances with her. Some of the same places, same parties, bumped a few glasses together. Adjacent barstools now and then at a sort of hippie/biker/Vietnam vet/you name it joint called the Coffee Gallery in North Beach. No big thing, just a couple of still-young people running from the same kinds of crap towns in the same crap general section of America.

Night she died was the best live concert I ever saw. It was at Winterland, and the headliners were the Dead and Jefferson, with Quicksilver and New Riders on the undercard. When I woke up in the morning, it was like that scene in “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” my little alarm radio telling me she’d been found dead in LA.

Still haven’t forgotten. Never will, I guess.

And I listened to even earlier music because of many brothers and cousins. All the early Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, The Ventures, Beatles, Stones, Byrds, Moody Blues…hell I’m getting to the age I can’t even remember them all!

re: #153 Big Beautiful Door

I assume it means American muslim terrorists are killing about 318k times as many people as radical christian terrorists per capita.

Which, of course, would be total BS as homegrown American Muslim terrorists have killed 94 people since 9/11, with this year’s shooting in Orlando accounting for just over 50% of those deaths.

I can’t figure out why he added #Munich since the shooter in that one wasn’t “inspired” by Muslim extremists, but by Anders Breivik & the far right. People really don’t think at all, they just hear “Muslim” and go straight into freakout mode, never mind the facts.

Even if he was talking about the global Muslim population, his bizarre calculation doesn’t seem to account for the fact that most of the victims (worldwide) are other Muslims. Funny how often that bit of info gets ignored.
