What adults to privately and mutually consentingly is of little concern to me, but here the issue was about a lack of consent or even basic respect.

I went and voted this AM around 9:00. I am in the DFW area and was ready to stand in line due to all of the stories of ginormous early voting turnout in Texas, I walked right up to the registrar and was promptly pointed to a booth.

My neighborhood went for Romney 2 to 1 in 2012, the only other people voting were a couple who appeared Latin and two young ladies who came in together. There was an elderly white guy pulling his big ass sedan slowly into the parking lot as I was leaving and that is it.

fwiw

Saw this on my FB just now. In fact. Someone I know made it a point to tag me and call me out after I posted about that crazy Trump lady in Des Moines who got busted for voting more than once.

Won’t link to SMOTI where this originated, but Snopes instead.

I drove through the sea of Trump-Pence signs in southwestern New Hampshire to the kid’s soccer game. We were greeted in the parking lot by a small crowd waving Clinton-Kaine and Maggie Hassan signs. It was a nice surprise. Drove home a different way and passed a truck all decked out with American flags, Trump stickers, and a big sign saying “Her lies matter.” Then went past the house with Hillary in a cage in the front yard…. Sigh. I don’t know if the Trump supporters are the majority, but they sure are active.

Yesterday I took a very long walk through the Hancock Park section of Los Angeles to check out the yard signs. When I took the same walk the week before the primary, I saw signs for Hillary, Bernie, Cruz and a significant number for Gary Johnson. 4 years ago I saw a scattering of Romney/Ryan signs. Yesterday I didn’t see a single Trump sign. BUT, I saw several Halloween displays with Trump piñata’s dangling from porches and trees. A couple of those displays had Gary Johnson lawn signs. There sure were a lot of Hillary signs!

Interesting

[/private]Just buys had a nice long chat/argument with my older brother about his belief that Trump may get elected after this latest email debacle. He totally buys the Wikileaks dump about the DNC screwing over Sanders, brushes off the fact that Trump hasn’t released his tax returns and talks about the fact that the Clinton Foundation has had to multiple amended returns, and belives that the Clinton Foundation only pays out 6% of its proceeds of charity. He’s retired military, serving two decades onboard the Silent Service. He firmly believes that Hillary should be in jail, and that the FBI agents are in revolt because of the fact that Hillary skated due to political meddling and that no grand jury was called. When I told him many career ex-military aren’t as a RWNJ as he his, he said “I don’t think so”. His big wishes were that if Trump would win, he would appoint a Scalia clone to protect the 2nd Amendment and get taxes back to Reagan levels and to prosecute Democrats for corruption. So needless to say, we’ll never see eye-to-eye on politics at all. Outside of that, we get along great.[/private]

I don’t think it’s going to change much, really.

Going on what we know now…
The emails were not to or from Hillary.
The emails were not from her server.
Many of them have turned up earlier in the investigation and are redundant.

Chaffetz looks like a partisan ass, as does Comey.

Bernie dead-enders and Trumpanzees will whoop it up for a couple of days. Anyone who reads the stories instead of just the headlines aren’t going to give a crap.

I’m more interested in seeing where this internecine FBI battle is going. Ultimately, I think Comey will either jump or be pushed from his job.

I’m not concerned about this latest email imbroglio for the same reason I haven’t worried much this whole election.

Women, Hispanics, and African Americans HATE Trump. Despise him.

And anyone that thinks mightily pissed-off women are going to stay home this election is not comprehending the sheer contempt we have for that creature.

We’re disgusted and we’re voting. And so are African Americans and Hispanics. No one is staying home and there are very few undecideds left.

Don’t let this discourage you, it’s not worth it. Get out and vote and then breathe for a bit longer. We got this.

Those are my thoughts as well and why I’m not worried. Trump has alienated so many key demographics in this country. We’re going to see record turnout I feel like in Hispanic voters which is very bad news for him in a must win state like Florida.

It shows that there is a difference in voting. I think that much can be admitted.

Factors are that Rural areas tend to be older, the education systems in the area tend to be somewhat poorly funded, and that they have been increasingly left behind as industries die and evolve.

They want the good times back, but they won’t be, at least not the old ways.

Wait ‘til you really drill down for the details: the rural/frontier split!

I remember hearing a joke. A Yankee is all Americans to a Briton. A Yankee is all people north of the Mason-Dixon line to a southerner. Then to people north of the Mason-Dixon line, a yankee is someone in New England. And finally to the New Englander, a Yankee is someone in a very rural and isolated part of Maine. Shrug. I live in a suburban/rural area but I’ve gone to school and work in suburbia and the city. People are people. I let people talk before I assume. NPR had a couple interviews with Trump and Clinton supporters. One was a 32 year old woman software designer and the other was a 60 year old man who drives a truck with a CSA flag and is a retired ironworker. If we just played assumptions, we’d assume the man is the Trump supporter and the woman is the Clinton supporter. Individuals are individuals. I’m learning that with my Dad who is a definite minority in his demographic being a staunch Clinton supporter but it doesn’t change that he is a Clinton supporter and strong opponent of Trump.

One thing about this election…a lot of people have made political decisions and moves that have gone off and blown up in their faces.

All the money spent, all the strategists, surrogates, advisers…poof!

So it would stand that Comey is about to get his. He put himself in a no win situation and he is still losing!

46
Barefoot Grin  Oct 29, 2016 • 11:38:59am

I should add that if we drove just a little further west we would have been in The Peoples Republic of Keene, where the divide is more between Dems and Libertarians. Probably very few Trump supporters that way. I know it’s not safe to draw conclusions from yard signage; I just get depressed—especially this election—thinking about how many delusional people live around me.

I honestly don’t think I am chicken littling on the Urban-Rural thing.

The Darker the colors, the larger the percentage for the winning side in that county, going from 90+% for the deepest shades, all the way to under 50% for the lightest, and separated by groups of 10% for each side.

The conditions in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation are atrociously bad.

As of 2011, population estimates of the reservation range from 28,000 to 40,000. Numerous enrolled members of the tribe live off the reservation.

80% of residents are unemployed;

49% of the residents live below the Federal poverty level (including 61% of all those under the age of 18);

Per capita income in Oglala Lakota County is $6,286;

The infant mortality rate is 5 times higher than the national average;

Native American amputation rates due to diabetes is 3 to 4 times higher than the national average;

Death rate due to diabetes is 3 times higher than the national average; and
Life expectancy in 2007 was estimated to be 48 for males and 52 for females.[61]

Yeah, I think half of the independent cities in the United States are in Virginia. The only ones outside the state that immediately come to mind are Baltimore and Saint Louis.

Oh yeah that’s right Baltimore and St. Louis are. You’re right. Can’t believe I forgot Baltimore being one with the amount of time I spend there.

It’s correct for Alaska. The deep red is the Anchorage/MatSu Valley area. Lot’s of Tea Partiers (think Sara Phalin). The northern blue parts are mostly Native Alaska areas plus the SE Panhandle where the State Capitol is located. SE Alaska is fairly liberal as that is where many State employees are located.

Episodes such as these led Hillary Clinton’s White House staff to refer to Tony and Hugh as “the Brothers Rodham”,[16] extending the American tradition of troublesome presidential siblings to the brother-in-law category.[7] One senior White House official would be quoted as saying, “You never wanted to hear their name come up in any context other than playing golf.”[16]

Long ago I read a science fiction short story wherein there was a gaggle of sentient robots of varying IQs needing to move to another place. They wished to avoid detection by humans. One robot said something like “there is more countryside than city, so we should move through the cities because there should be fewer humans there”.
Those red/blue county maps remind me of that flawed reasoning when I hear of someone referring to one, claiming that it shows the country to be conservative and therefore should be majority Republican.

To no one’s surprise, Forbes published a piece by Roy Spencer deriding Clinton for being more talkative about climate change.

The folk over at climatefeedback.org though went through the effort of debunking it, getting comments from various scientists:

Analysis of “Hillary Clinton Boards The Climate Crisis Train To Nowhere”

This commentary by Dr. Roy Spencer published in the opinion section of Forbes makes a number of inaccurate and misleading scientific claims. For instance the article claims that climate change would be so slow that “it cannot be observed by anyone in their lifetime”, which is demonstrably wrong. It also misrepresents the impacts of climate change and makes claims about sea level and temperature records that are not supported by the evidence.

His forecasts have consistently been more favorable for Trump than any others, they’ve included polls most pollsters ignore because of obvious methodological shortcomings and/or partisanship, and he hasn’t been consistent in his own methodology (hence why Hillary Clinton’s chances are now worse than Obama’s in 2012 despite a much larger poll lead which is much more consistent across the states). He’s also taken GOP money to give them his own briefings, although I don’t think he’s been telling them anything he hasn’t told anyone else. Basically, he’s been on the pro-Trump extreme of serious analysis, and being on the extremes is a great way to blow a reputation.

I do notice on 538 that both Ohio and Iowa are now light pink.

Probably we are seeing a long term degradation of the FDR-Democratic heritage. If Drumpfskind does carry those states it will be an indication of the weakness of Hillary as a candidate. While both states have been “purple” for a while, Drumpfskind’s appeal in those states have to arise from cultural issues more than anything else. Iowa has amongst the lowest unemployment rates. Ohio has had a much larger hill to climb being part of the rust belt, but it is hardly an impoverished state. Coal mining in the far southeast is under pressure but it is a small part of the economy.

Both states though have large conservative Christian populations. If it wasn’t for Cleveland, Ohio would be a red state.

True, but looking at the polling, I noticed some problems.

In Ohio, I tracked down Remington and CNN’s polls, and both had some rather baffling results.

The CNN one was the one that had virtually no minority responses, and was skewed heavily towards the older side, as fewer than 20% of responses were from people under 49.

Then, the Remington shows some rather baffling results too. Namely, 20% of African Americans and 40% of Hispanics in the state going for Trump.

Survey Monkey has also been good for Trump, but SurveyMonkey is hot garbage, as it is a self-selecting online poll.

Fixed. Nate’s bias since selling out to ESPN has been towards generating clicks and selling ads. If the two candidate’s positions were switched his model would be bending over backwards to improve Hillary’s perceived odds. That’s why he’s using t-distribution and the trendline adjustment, because they build uncertainty (a tendency to want to return to 50/50) into the model. Even if the polls don’t change at all Nate’s new model will want to rubber band back to that point.

Trump warned his supporters that the US Postal Service is trying to steal the election for Hillary Clinton in Colorado.
At a rally in Golden, CO, Trump said:

I have real problems with ballots being sent. Does that make sense?

Like people saying, “Oh, here’s a ballot. Here’s another ballot. Throw it away. Oh, here’s one I like. We’ll keep that one.”

I have real problems, so get your ballots in.

Trump also accused election officials of throwing away ballots, as his rally was a mixture of claims of voter fraud and baseless speculation about Hillary Clinton’s emails.

Donald Trump appears to be losing his mind. He also seems to think that accusing the US Postal Service and election officials of stealing the election for Hillary Clinton is going to motivate Republicans to vote.

And I was pointing out that there are plenty of gay men who “know” that when Republicans fulminate about homosexuals, they don’t mean wealthy men in or near liberal cities; they “know” that the snake-handling wing of the party must be appeased so that they can get their tax cuts.

One other key difference that explains the uncertainty in Silver’s 2016 model vs 2012 is the existence of third party candidates in the polling. Now you can reasonably argue their mere existence should perturb the numbers as much as they do given Clinton’s increased lead over Trump compared to Obama over Romney at the same point. However there’s no reason whatsoever to conflate that with a bias towards Republicans. Not when Occam’s razor usually tilts towards self interest, and it’s in Nate’s interest to please ESPN and make all of them as much money as possible.

Glad to see someone as smart as Josh school Glenn “I WILL DESTROY AMERICA WITH MY DYING BREATH!!” Greenwald, but like I said yesterday, I’m not buying Josh’s “Comey isn’t purposely damaging Clinton” line of thought.

I just found out yesterday that Comey had some part in the Whitewater bullshit from years back.

So, we have a Republican who tried to take down Bill Clinton, presented with the opportunity to damage HRC’s run for POTUS, in an environment were practically every Republican wants to see her in prison.

He basically told his bosses “Fuck you, I’m releasing this.” It strains incredulity that he didn’t know that the GOP would run riot with this.

Why the fuck should I even entertain the idea that this wasn’t what Comey had in mind?

It was tempting to give the guy credit for positioning himself as the most moderate Republican in Washington. Sure, it was a function of being a Republican senator from a deep blue state…but it was SO rare it was refreshing.

Then, of course, he began walking back his formerly reasonable stance on climate change last year.

There is also the fact he is being VERY cagey about his health and his recovery from a serious stroke. There is no doubt he made huge strides, but keeping Mitch McConnell as majority leader is not a compelling reason to send a man back to the Senate who is not up to the task.

Maybe his nasty remark the other night was a function of losing his “filter” post-stroke. The article linked above suggests this is the case, and offers his “bro with no ho” slur of Lindsey Graham as an example. Maybe he is just a bit of a racist and/or asshole.

In any case, he will have a LOT of time to focus on his recovery starting in January.

If I remember from Gus and others on Twitter correctly, the head of the FBI is independently nominated and appointed to a single 10 year term. In theory, anyway.

In response to Hoover’s lengthy tenure, Congress imposed a term limit of ten years for future directors, which was waived by the Senate for Robert Mueller on July 27, 2011 due to serious security concerns at that time.[5] In theory, they serve ten-year terms unless they resign, die, or are removed, but in reality, since J. Edgar Hoover, none have served a full ten years, except Robert Mueller, who served twelve years.

I knew that New Hampshire is whiter than the US as whole already. My point today was, probably poorly written, that white people living in Rural areas tend to skew towards being conservative. I was not trying to lump people together, I was just trying to state what tends to be obvious when you look at an election results map.

Yes, I made an incredibly toxic comment a few days ago on this, but in my mind, I was not relating that previous comment to today.

I was simply trying to provide what I thought was a reasonable explanation for the Trump signs.

Demographic categories tend to break down upon close analysis anyway.

Let’s take this one currently popular among pollsters: Non-hispanic white.

What does that mean?

As I noted before, “hispanic” comes from the Latin term for the Iberian peninsula.

So does “hispanic” mean someone who speaks Spanish as their first language? Or maybe their parents spoke Spanish but they don’t?

Even worse is the term “white”. This is a substitute for “European”.

But most people from the Spanish speaking portions of the Americas have dominantly Native American or Sub-Saharan African ancestry, if one maps their DNA to populations (e.g., 23andMe.)

If one was really into this idea of categorizing stuff, if only minor (less than 50%) percentage of ancestry of an American happens to be from Sub-Saharan they can still identify as “black”. However a “hispanic” may have actually a larger share of Sub-Saharan ancestors. So when speaking of “Hispanics” how come we don’t have a category “Non-Hispanic Black” instead of “non-Hispanic White”???

Your problem this time (and it is a HUGE problem) is that you are lumping ALL WHITE PEOPLE into a monolithic block as a problematic thing for your precious statistics. That broadbrushing thing you do all the time has shot up to new elevations.

re: #226 Ziggy_TARDIS

I am a White Person voting for Clinton.

Well, good for you. Have a cookie.

I’m just some old white lady with a master’s degree who lives in the ignorant rural part of this country that’s horrible red, but somehow still manages to vote like some smarter-than-me white urban guy.
But free to keep insulting all of us rural folks because lord knows we need constant reminding by urban folks that we are all stupid.

As I’ve said before, to most RWNJs, “Hispanic” means “Looks like a Southwestern Indian”. If you look like Charo, you’re not going to get asked for your papers. If you look like George Lopez, keep them handy.

I think even some non-RWNJs are confused by the concept of Hispanic too to be honest with you. My grandmother and my mom too were very confused when my SiL told them that her dad’s mother is light skinned. A lot of people don’t understand how diverse a place Latin and South America really is. That’s part of why I took Latin American history. I’ve had so many Hispanic friends and now extended family and I wanted to know more about their history and region.

From the beginning of US Censuses with family information (1850) place of birth was indicated. Then place of parent’s birth was added for a couple of censuses.

Demographic categories were there from the start. But census takers sometimes strayed from the instruction sets.

Today though these categories are rapidly losing their ability to describe. In your example, many MENA immigrants’ children will marry with Americans from a wide variety of backgrounds, most not MENA. So the category loses its descriptive power for these people.

This is a problem that has surfaced in this election, mostly due to Drumpfskind’s bigotry, but simmers under all sorts of social studies, including censuses.

Self-labeling is important to us humans. The current polls are rife with it (mostly with the hot buttons “conservative” and “liberal”.) But this is about our need to identify, a way of placing ourselves in the larger group. Our choices to self-label are tied to our emotions and self-worth.

You know, they ask you your ancestry on the census too. To be honest, I have no idea what i would say. Part of me would say Irish since I most identify with that part of my ancestry but my surname is German but at the same time I’m most genetically Eastern European as well. I like being my unique self though. Lots of different people over literally millions of years contributed to making me the individual I am today.

Absolutely. I’m just saying that I’ve seen many people who are from bigoted be confused about what Hispanic means. I remember being a kid and one of my best friends from Peru being shocked that his Dad was light skinned like my own Dad was. I didn’t put it together until later that South America especially its larger countries like Argentina and Brazil had a ton of immigration for all over. Pope Francis’s father I believe was an Italian who fled Italy to escape Mussolini for example. Salma Hayek is part Syrian.

I’m surprised the following story has not been exploited by the Drumpfskind machine (well, perhaps there is no functioning machine) as a warning against a Hillary presidency:

Thousands protest in South Korea, demand president quit over scandal

Thousands of South Koreans rallied in Seoul on Saturday demanding the resignation of President Park Geun-hye, as a crisis deepened over allegations a friend exerted inappropriate influence over her and interfered in state affairs.

The street protest came as prosecutors investigate presidential aides and other officials to determine whether they broke the law to allow Park’s friend, Choi Soon-sil, to wield undue influence and gain financially.

[…]

Prosecutors are investigating two of Park’s aides who allegedly helped Choi get access to drafts of Park’s speeches and set up two foundations with about 50 billion won ($44 million) in contributions from conglomerates that she later benefited from, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.

Samuil Marshak:

A lady came to the station
With a pan
A divan
A basin
A box
With three locks
A valise
And a tiny Pekingese

She insisted at the station
On the proper registration
Of her pan
Her divan
Her basin
Her box
With three locks
Her valise
And her tiny Pekingese

The redcap puffed a cigar
As he loaded the baggage car

All aboard! We’re off on vacation
With a pan
A divan
A basin
A box
With three locks
Her valise
And her tiny Pekingese

But when the platform was bare,
The puppy was still there

The train arrived at Gissing
With one piece of baggage missing.
They counted in frustration
One pan
One divan
A basin
A box
With three locks
Her valise
Hey boys, where’s the Pekingese?

They happened to see a Great Dane
Sniffing around the train.
They caught him without hesitation
And put him aboard with the basin
The pan and the divan
The box
With three locks
The valise-
In place of the Pekingese.

When they came to Bowling Green
Redcap number 15
Unloaded at their destination
The pan
The divan
The basin
The box
With three locks
The valise
And the dog, last but not least.

The dog began to growl,
The lady began to howl:
Thieves! Robbers! Hold the train!
This beast is a Great Dane!

And she gave a swift kick to the pan
And knocked aide the divan
The box
With three locks
The valise…
” Where is my Pekingese???!”

Excuse me, ma’am, the slip
They wrote at the start of your trip
Says you checked into the station
With a pan
A divan
A basin
A box
With three locks
A valise
And a tiny Pekingese

Maybe
During the trip
Your little pup
Grew up!

Jocelyn Bell undoubtedly was cheated out of a Nobel, as was Meitner. Franklin, unfortunately, died 4 years before the Prize was issued. We’ll never know whether she would have been included instead of Maurice Wilkins, whose contribution was to give Crick and Watson her crystallography results without her knowledge. So—probably not.

I never said they were the bad guys today.

Yes, I know Democrats are also out in the country.

I should say that the rural area I was driving through is not the rural New Hampshire of Robert Frost “flinty” New Englander days. These are the homes of wealthy people, for the most part. They do pay hefty property taxes since we have no state income tax, but I think a lot of them also hate the idea of Syrians coming into America and feel somehow that a wall between Mexico and America would make them more secure in their large homes filled with guns.

Damn William, you are touching on a lot of my love for rock background today.

Chicago was my first big concert with my friends and not an elder brother or cousin. And they were just like in the video you put up. One fine show really, and Terry Kath was really good that night…he got into some extended Hendrix-like lead solos. Great first big concert memory.

I saw Chicago (CTA at the time) in a high school gym in Bucks County, PA when I was 16. I stood right in front of Kath all night. He was really good, and the band overall was excellent.

I think I paid $3 for the ticket IIRC.
