There is a growing realization that a great deal of the stuff that has been stoking the outrage factory that preys upon dimwitted rednecks and pasty-faced suburban freaks … is utter and complete bullshit.

And I think there’s a third target audience, beyond what you call “dimwitted rednecks and pasty-faced suburban freaks”, and that is people who don’t pay a lot of attention to politics. And let’s face it, most people don’t, they’re too busy and tied up with their own world - work, getting in some time at the gym, taking the kids to soccer practice, etc - to bother with the details of all this. So, maybe they hear something in passing, or on the 11:00 news before they go to bed, or on closed captioning as they sit in the doctor’s waiting room.

Every single one of Trump’s picks is problematic. Every single one.

Whether it’s incompetence/inexperience, as with Carson for HUD or the EPA pick being against environmental regulations and doesn’t believe in science, or the slew of generals who are ineligible to be confirmed without waivers, Trump’s choices are about undermining the operation of the very agencies that they seek to run.

Sen. Schumer, who’s going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting to hold Trump and his picks accountable - and to head off some of the worst offenders - is already speaking out against Trump’s Labor pick.

I still don’t understand the “safe spaces” thing. One of the things I really enjoyed about college and law school was engaging with people on issues that had different opinions than I did on issues. Granted, I was a poli-sci major and often the one “dissenting” view in policy classes (which I tended to come at from more of a libertarian bent than a conservative one), so maybe I’m just weird like that.

Unless it’s just that people have become bigger assholes than we were back then?

It’s really less about hiding from different ideas and more about being protected from the applications of some of those ideas, (such as anti-feminists trying to verbally or physically assault avowed feminists), and asking schools to actually recognize it’s not just “debate” when those kinds of things happen.

In February, corporate officials came to our plant and announced that they were closing the facility. They would move 1,300 jobs to a plant in Mexico. (Three hundred and fifty positions would remain in Indianapolis, mostly filled by research and development staff.)

Over the next several months, my team and I worked tirelessly to keep Carrier in our city. We came up with $23 million in savings, but the Carrier brass said that wasn’t enough. They could save $65 million by moving to Mexico. We couldn’t match that unless we were willing to cut wages to $5/hour and cut all benefits.

So we started to negotiate a severance package instead — one week of pay for every year of service, a $2,500 lump sum for every employee and free health care for six months.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, Trump got involved. He sat down with Carrier leaders. Afterward, he announced that 1,100 jobs would be saved. When I first heard the news, I was optimistic. But I began to get nervous when we couldn’t get any details on the deal. I urged caution, but our members got their hopes up. They thought their jobs had been saved.

When I met with Carrier officials last Thursday, I realized that that wouldn’t be the case. Though Trump said he’d saved 1,100 jobs, he hadn’t. Carrier told us that 550 people would get laid off.

Trump didn’t tell people that, though. When he spoke at our plant, he acted like no one was going to lose their job. People went crazy for him. They thought, because of Trump, I’m going to be able to provide for my family.

What I think the mainstream media should do with Trump reporting is to put a mandatory 7 day delay on everything Trump-related, and use that time to investigate the substance of what’s going on.

It would be great if we could convince people to read the paper and have the paper do detailed analysis a couple of days after the actual story. But it’s so much easier getting it in pieces from distilled sources.

I was on the road with my wife on a Sunday, went to a BBQ joint (Old Style Bar-B-Que in Olive Branch, MS). Saw a poor waitress with a large round table of old people obviously came from church, I don’t think there was a tip that involved paper money. The lack of generosity galled me. Get water and leave the difference between that and a drink to make it part of a decent tip if you are that strapped for money.

I still bartend the party room for a local restaurant from time to time. I think everyone should work in the service industry at least once in their life.

The first I saw of the Trump-Carrier deal was a “Trump Carrier deal saves jobs” headline in a local paper.

This is how Trump wins with this bullshit. No amount of after the fact investigating (assuming it even happens or is reported on) will overcome that first headline.

He only really wins with his 46% voting block, who won’t give two s—ts regardless of how much his actions permanently damage his standing among anyone who isn’t one of them.

It wouldn’t matter what happens… widespread rioting and wholesale union strikes grinding the economy to a halt… the military breaking in half and turning on itself due to mutiny over Trump’s suicide wishes disguised as war… US citizens and soldiers turning on their own country to fight alongside the First Nations as Trump attempts to confiscate their land… deserved retaliation over Nazi hate crimes spilling out across the country… domestic terrorist attacks that will only enable additional disunity… even the government collapsing before our very eyes… and the GOP rank-and-file behind Trump will not bother to care, right up until they inevitably lose it all.

It would be great if we could convince people to read the paper and have the paper do detailed analysis a couple of days after the actual story. But it’s so much easier getting it in pieces from distilled sources.

The compulsion in the media to get there first with the story is a fatal flaw when covering a bullshit generator like Trump. The first report of something like the Trump-Carrier deal is going to be Trump’s press release because there isn’t time for anything else in the scramble to get the story out.

By the time investigation (if any) is done, a new piece of Trump bullshit makes headlines and buries the investigation results.

The only accurate way to report on Trump in real time is to Mad-Lib it: “Pathological Liar Trump spews bullshit about X, blames Y, says he’ll make America great again.”

When I was dating, I had one of those IHOP midnight coffee after date things where we had pie and coffee for a couple of hours. The waitress said most people at that time of night never left tips. I left her a $20. It made me sad that people either don’t know that wait staff makes virtually nothing in salary and everything in tips or don’t give a shit.

If California goes, Oregon and Washington may ty to join in that effort, I could also see Clark and Washoe counties in Nevada wanting to join. Texas would surely want out and a few neighboring states may decide to join them.

As happened in 1860, as soon as one state tries to leave there will be a domino effect of other regions looking at the possibility of splitting and what the perceived benefits would be.

I, for one, am still a believer in this grand experiment and will remain hopeful that we can and will survive the worst of it
