“When the Pope’s talking poop … you know we’re in deep doo-doo…”

Great line. Magnificently crafted. Colbert’s writers have really stepped it up.

There is a growing realization that a great deal of the stuff that has been stoking the outrage factory that preys upon dimwitted rednecks and pasty-faced suburban freaks … is utter and complete bullshit.

This response to the Lie Merchants needs to keep growing & spreading. The only way to break the cycle is to mock people for believing this B.S. One Facebook post at a time.

FCC’s Ajit Pai says net neutrality’s “days are numbered” under Trump

Pai wants to “fire up the weed whacker” and cut down FCC regulations.

He’s a happy asshole today.

Might be time to pull that old 56000 baud modem out of the attic.

I loved the line “They think I’m on Hillary’s payroll, for the record… she can’t afford me.”

And I think there’s a third target audience, beyond what you call “dimwitted rednecks and pasty-faced suburban freaks”, and that is people who don’t pay a lot of attention to politics. And let’s face it, most people don’t, they’re too busy and tied up with their own world - work, getting in some time at the gym, taking the kids to soccer practice, etc - to bother with the details of all this. So, maybe they hear something in passing, or on the 11:00 news before they go to bed, or on closed captioning as they sit in the doctor’s waiting room.

some of the payments to the Trump Foundation may have been made in exchange for Trump’s appearances on WWE programming, and as a means for him to avoid tax liability (since there’s evidence that he has been more than willing to use the charitable organization to pay off personal debts).

True. But the low-interest news consumers only hear the B.S. when it is passed along by the engaged - and enraged - core audience for Fake News.

If, rather than getting the attention they crave (or ad $$ they depend on) when they share the B.S., they instead got mockery and disgust … the incentives for sharing B.S. would start to weaken and go away.

Just a thought.

Every single one of Trump’s picks is problematic. Every single one.

Whether it’s incompetence/inexperience, as with Carson for HUD or the EPA pick being against environmental regulations and doesn’t believe in science, or the slew of generals who are ineligible to be confirmed without waivers, Trump’s choices are about undermining the operation of the very agencies that they seek to run.

Sen. Schumer, who’s going to have to do a lot of heavy lifting to hold Trump and his picks accountable - and to head off some of the worst offenders - is already speaking out against Trump’s Labor pick.

More insanity from Gen. Flynn’s timeline.

Well, it’s insane to anyone who is rational and fact-based. But for someone like Trump, this is why Flynn’s qualified for the job:

It’s this kind of nonsense that got Former Gen. Barry McCaffrey changing course on supporting Flynn. In fact, McCaffrey said that his statements border on being demented. (And Trump probably thinks that means a ringing endorsement).

I still don’t understand the “safe spaces” thing. One of the things I really enjoyed about college and law school was engaging with people on issues that had different opinions than I did on issues. Granted, I was a poli-sci major and often the one “dissenting” view in policy classes (which I tended to come at from more of a libertarian bent than a conservative one), so maybe I’m just weird like that.

Unless it’s just that people have become bigger assholes than we were back then?

Would mocking Donald Trump have similar effect too?

He so needs to be talked about and fawned over, if the media and others all started to point out how much he is a fool and really go about embarrassing him would it make him change any?

Maybe no?

It’s really less about hiding from different ideas and more about being protected from the applications of some of those ideas, (such as anti-feminists trying to verbally or physically assault avowed feminists), and asking schools to actually recognize it’s not just “debate” when those kinds of things happen.

Tell me about it. The thing people keep bringing up is ‘oh, I don’t want 57 counties deciding for 3000!’ or whatever they say. Guess what there.

1) People should count more for land or property, goddammit,
2) The fact that the vote count isn’t the entirety of the population of California means, hey, surprise, those votes actually CAN get cancelled out if there are enough of them, and
3) If you assholes represent ‘real America’ as much as you say you do, why the fuck didn’t more actual votes go to you in total?

Huge sigh.

The media is now every bit the enemy.

Some people care and are trying to do their jobs (Kurt Eichenwald, David Fahrenthold, Sopan Deb) but they have the extra handicap of having to break through the clutter of useless garbage… a la Chuck Todd and CNN’s insipid MBF complex.

And that’s not counting the fake news industry paired alongside propaganda outfits like Fox and Breitbart.

45
Backwoods_Sleuth  Dec 8, 2016 • 12:49:36pm

In February, corporate officials came to our plant and announced that they were closing the facility. They would move 1,300 jobs to a plant in Mexico. (Three hundred and fifty positions would remain in Indianapolis, mostly filled by research and development staff.)

Over the next several months, my team and I worked tirelessly to keep Carrier in our city. We came up with $23 million in savings, but the Carrier brass said that wasn’t enough. They could save $65 million by moving to Mexico. We couldn’t match that unless we were willing to cut wages to $5/hour and cut all benefits.

So we started to negotiate a severance package instead — one week of pay for every year of service, a $2,500 lump sum for every employee and free health care for six months.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, Trump got involved. He sat down with Carrier leaders. Afterward, he announced that 1,100 jobs would be saved. When I first heard the news, I was optimistic. But I began to get nervous when we couldn’t get any details on the deal. I urged caution, but our members got their hopes up. They thought their jobs had been saved.

When I met with Carrier officials last Thursday, I realized that that wouldn’t be the case. Though Trump said he’d saved 1,100 jobs, he hadn’t. Carrier told us that 550 people would get laid off.

Trump didn’t tell people that, though. When he spoke at our plant, he acted like no one was going to lose their job. People went crazy for him. They thought, because of Trump, I’m going to be able to provide for my family.

If they can get their total meal for under $25, then that tip would be… OK-ish. Unless they live in bumfuckistan (which they might, considering they think this is OK in the first place), they will have little luck getting a meal for 2 outside of a place that asks you over a bad PA system while you are sitting in your car if you want to add fries and a drink to make a combo.

This is how Trump wins with this bullshit. No amount of after the fact investigating (assuming it even happens or is reported on) will overcome that first headline.

What I think the mainstream media should do with Trump reporting is to put a mandatory 7 day delay on everything Trump-related, and use that time to investigate the substance of what’s going on.

I was on the road with my wife on a Sunday, went to a BBQ joint (Old Style Bar-B-Que in Olive Branch, MS). Saw a poor waitress with a large round table of old people obviously came from church, I don’t think there was a tip that involved paper money. The lack of generosity galled me. Get water and leave the difference between that and a drink to make it part of a decent tip if you are that strapped for money.

re: #70 EPR-radar

The first I saw of the Trump-Carrier deal was a “Trump Carrier deal saves jobs” headline in a local paper.

This is how Trump wins with this bullshit. No amount of after the fact investigating (assuming it even happens or is reported on) will overcome that first headline.

He only really wins with his 46% voting block, who won’t give two s—ts regardless of how much his actions permanently damage his standing among anyone who isn’t one of them.

It wouldn’t matter what happens… widespread rioting and wholesale union strikes grinding the economy to a halt… the military breaking in half and turning on itself due to mutiny over Trump’s suicide wishes disguised as war… US citizens and soldiers turning on their own country to fight alongside the First Nations as Trump attempts to confiscate their land… deserved retaliation over Nazi hate crimes spilling out across the country… domestic terrorist attacks that will only enable additional disunity… even the government collapsing before our very eyes… and the GOP rank-and-file behind Trump will not bother to care, right up until they inevitably lose it all.

re: #76 Belafon

It would be great if we could convince people to read the paper and have the paper do detailed analysis a couple of days after the actual story. But it’s so much easier getting it in pieces from distilled sources.

The compulsion in the media to get there first with the story is a fatal flaw when covering a bullshit generator like Trump. The first report of something like the Trump-Carrier deal is going to be Trump’s press release because there isn’t time for anything else in the scramble to get the story out.

By the time investigation (if any) is done, a new piece of Trump bullshit makes headlines and buries the investigation results.

The only accurate way to report on Trump in real time is to Mad-Lib it: “Pathological Liar Trump spews bullshit about X, blames Y, says he’ll make America great again.”

Trump cares about only two things in the entire world: his money and his emotional gratification (i.e., ‘winning’). He is not constrained by rationality in pursuing these goals, he is a sociopath and narcissist, and he may also have age-related dementia. Trump can be strongly influenced by the last person to have spoken with him, and has chosen a neo-Nazi as his consigliere. His cabinet picks are a wretched hive of scum and villainy.

When I’m with a group getting separate checks, I usually double my tip to cover the probability that someone else will either undertip or not tip at all.

(And when I go to restaurants where friends or kids of friends work, I usually tip more than the meal costs!)

We almost always tip 20-25%. You have to really fuck up to get only 15%. Unless they’re personally rude, really rude…not busy or whatever because shit happens, but downright rude. I won’t abide that. Then I leave pennies to indicate it’s not that we don’t tip but you got what you earned.

When I was dating, I had one of those IHOP midnight coffee after date things where we had pie and coffee for a couple of hours. The waitress said most people at that time of night never left tips. I left her a $20. It made me sad that people either don’t know that wait staff makes virtually nothing in salary and everything in tips or don’t give a shit.

Sadly, it almost feels as if no one cares about how scandalous Trump’s presidency is shaping up to be (and he’s not even in office yet!!). We have stories like these but no uproar from the media or Democrats. It’s all ho hum and “isn’t Trump cute when he’s tweeting furiously at critics?”

Huge sigh.

I think the Democrats are in an uproar and since it is still close to the elections, you may not be hearing anything directly from them as they may still be in shock and are now trying to figure out what to do in the future.

And as Myron said in the comment just after yours…do not count on the media overall. They are still busy playing with a shiny new toy and seeing how they can turn him into a story that brings in the bucks.
