I get the impression a significant number of Protestants and atheists treat the Catholic Church the same way they treat Muslims:
One Muslim does something bad, it is a reflection on all Muslims everywhere in the world.
One Protestant does something bad, that’s “Well, Main Street Bible Church doesn’t reflect on all Protestant churches.”I imagine even before Pope Francis took the Throne of Peter that the overwhelming majority of Catholic priests, nuns, &c would just as strongly oppose child abuse as any other person. The RCC just makes an easy target for those who don’t like it.
You’re kind of glossing over the fact that the Catholic Church has an explicit and strictly enforced hierarchy spanning the globe. Literally every Catholic church on the planet is somewhere in their org chart. So in a very real way the local church is a reflection on The Church, in the same way that my local bank branch is a reflection of the national bank it is part of. If my local bank is fraudulently foreclosing on little old ladies, and corporate takes those reports, puts them in the round file, and pretends it’s not happening, the organization as a whole has a problem. It doesn’t matter how many branch managers would never do something like that themselves, they are part of a hierarchy that tacitly condones that behavior. Centralized control creates centralized responsibility.

Chain of Command is one of those episodes that really stands the test of time. Other episodes have aged badly because of either the Cold War subtext, the “New Age” mentality, or Gene’s ideas about how the future is supposed to be this wonderful place where humanity has given up all its flaws. But CoC is one of those episodes that is still as powerful today as it was then.

What, the idea that whites are superior? That’s pretty obviously defeated by the demand of Spencer et al. for special treatment. If they were superior, they’d welcome full equality under law because they’d naturally rise to the top. As it is, they demand their won special safe zones, because they fear they would not.
I gotta say, I’m finding it hard to keep a grip on the sentiment that punching him was a bad thing. It’s actually enjoyable watching him get ‘cold cucked’ as The Younger Boy put it.
Come to think of it, Kellyanne Conway’s getup did make me think of the kind of toy soldiers you’d expect to find at FAO Schwarz. What made her think her outfit was appropriate for a presidential inauguration, I have no idea.

That was an interesting point in that episode. Jellicoe is kind of a dick, but he’s also Captain. It’s HIS ship, not Picard’s anymore, and he should expect it to run as he wants it to. And the job of the XO is to make sure it does. And Riker was presumptuous and whiny.
It reminds me of “Run Silent, Run Deep”, where Clark Gable takes over a sub when the commander retires, even though everyone in the crew thinks the XO, Burt Lancaster should get command. There’s grumbling among the crew and some of the junior officers, especially when they don’t understand some of the new skipper’s commands.

Well, as was said in the video I posted, Jellico was put in (temporary) command of the Enterprise for a very specific reason: to deal with the Cardassians in negotiations and to keep the Enterprise and her crew in one piece (if at all possible) while doing it. Yes, Jellico’s command style was definitely at odds with Picard’s and rubbed Riker and others the wrong way, but he wasn’t there to make friends, he was there to win the negotiations for the Federation, which would have been severely compromised had he acknowledged Picard was captured while on a sanctioned Federation mission.
If anyone was a real asshole, it was definitely Riker, since, as first officer, he should have understood that Picard’s mission always included the risk of capture or death and the reasons why Jellico couldn’t just compromise his own mission.

My rain gauge says 19.90” of rain, and the county rain gauge about .3 miles away at 19.20” is pretty close. (and it was out of service for the first rain fall of the year) If Wunderground stats are correct we are about to beat an 8 year record for rainfall (and beat anything up to the the year 2000 when their records end) in the east bay area of SF Bay, and the rain season doesn’t end until June 31st. An 18 or more year record rainfall. Woo-hoo. Back in the 60s and early 70s we got a good 20-24” a year. 80s were pretty heavy too, then it went downhill. It may not be much but at least I have something to be happy about.

A bit of a story but it’s late, I’m bored and we’re here, right? Anyway… we had an old family friend from out of town stay over this weekend and this happened while he was here…
Background: He is married but amicably separated (her idea to leave, not his - 10+ years now) and she is still on his health insurance since her job doesn’t offer it (elderly care). He is about 60, former Navy, working for government contractor for the last 30 years and not really politically oriented, though he leans liberal. His ‘ex’ has been living with another guy for the last few years so our friend figures that it’s over and time to wrap things up. Last month he told her that she won’t be on his insurance this year since she needs to get herself covered and move on with life.
On to what happened today…
He was on his laptop and checking out his Facebook page when his ex posted the side-by-side 1/2 pics the Obama and Trump inaugurations with a line about FAKE NEWS!!! under it. I heard him groan about it and he told me what it was when I asked. Almost immediately after that a friend of theirs that he works with posted in agreement with her, stating that he watched the Trump inauguration himself and it was YUGE!!! That elicited another groan from our friend that was answered when I asked “What now?”.
I told our friend to go check out Snopes (introducing him to it, actually!) and he quickly linked a FB post to their story on it in answering his ex. At this point another voice chimed in to respond in agreement with our friend, a voice that happens to be an old flame from before he had married his wife just over forty years ago. She also responded with a link to a local news site that ran a news report on it, all factual. His ex messaged him thinking he might be angry with her and he responded negatively and gave her a smile. She responded that the pic she posted was real and that the news reports were fake.
He asked her if she looked at his link or the one that his old flame posted, to which she responded that she had but they were wrong. He pointed out that she had been presented with two separate sources that show her and her news source are wrong and if she has an issue with the links she was given then to please point it out to him. He also stated that she needs to get her news from more than the one place she listens to, Fox. She responded that she really doesn’t know what to think because her boyfriend has two TV blaring Fox News all day and night when he is home and that is all she hears.
We both laughed about this but later on I mentioned to him that it crossed my mind that he’s really going to find out how deep her commitment to Republicans and Trump are when either her new old man needs to make an ‘honest woman out of her’ and put her on his insurance (which our friend doubts) or hit the Oregon Healthcare Exchange.
If it’s still there… either way, she’s just another committed Trump supporter…lol!

I wouldn’t put it past Spencer to have paid or even had someone on his NAZI team do this to him to make him look the victim. Either way, the problem with this victim line is that I don’t know anyone who would feel any sympathy because some NAZI asshole got decked. Freedom of speech doesn’t protect you from illegal actions of others as a result of exercising that freedom.
Spencer can ask Martin Luther’s family about that. There’s plenty of other examples out there if he bothered to look.

It’s also a convenient way when Second Street Bible Church has a problem, Third Street Bible Church can say “it wasn’t us.”
You might be glossing over the problem that the problem is the religious views themselves.
You’ll note on that post from reformation.com that there are churches across the whole spectrum of Protestant churches involved in sexual assaults on children, from very conservative Evangelical to very liberal independent churches. Do the others get a pass because “they don’t have a centralised authority?”
Do those other churches have a moral authority to condemn their Pharisees amongst them? They are all bound by a hierarchy as well, or at least they claim they are: the Law of God promulgated in the Bible.
That goes back to what my mention of the RCC was part of: When a Muslim conducts a bad act, all Muslims worldwide are condemned for it no matter how much they protest the act (despite Islam mostly being a decentralised religion).
When a Christian conducts a bad act, that single Christian is condemned and not all Christians across the world (or even across town). See Eric Rudolph, Timothy McVeigh, &c &c &c an endless string of terrorists acting in the name of God. All of them are condemned individually (or with whatever minor group they are part of).
In Eric Rudolph’s case, churches specifically hid him from the law for years. How many churches were shuttered for supporting terrorists over that? Oh right, none.
Islam is presented by many Christians as a “political ideology” (never mind that political ideology is protected by the I Amendment), but Christianity is a “religion” (never mind people like Betsy DeVos or Fred Phelps explicitly trying to influence secular politics).

Before I start to get ready for work, it really amazes me that we’ve ended up with so many fairly young people (I know Spence risn’t young like CCJ but hear me out in this) but so many young people who probably have grandfathers that fought the Axis powers and grandmothers who probably worked in war time factories that contributed to the Axis defeat. When I was a kid, I felt moved by the Saving Private Ryan and BOB.I played the Medal of Honor playstation and PC games and imagined myself as the characters from Saving Private Ryan or later Band of Brothers, and felt sadness reading about Anne Frank and the little girl who I was assigned when I had to do a paper on a child of the Holocaust and never once did I imagine the Nazis as the good guys especially their ideology, I still remember that little girl seventeen years later because her last name was Frank and like Anne her father too was a WWI veteran. Her older half sister I believe remembered seeing her put in a gas van in the Riga, Latvia ghetto and that was the last anyone heard of her. Sorry I’m rambling a bit here but it really saddens me that we have so many people who think the Nazis had the right ideology. Maybe we shouldn’t teach WWII at the end of the school year when our kids fare thinking about summer. Maybe we should make history class more real for chlidren. I don’t know. But I want today’s kids to never ever see the Nazis as the good guys.

And that’s just the point. Far too many read just headlines and don’t bother to pay attention to the rest of the story. You get “5 things that were inaccurately stated” instead of “Trump Admin lied 5 times”
Journalism and headline writers need a crash course on how to cover this administration. Blunt small words do better than evasive euphemisms.
So, when you’re about to say “Trump Admin exaggerated the crowd size” instead report “Trump Admin lied about crowd size because he’s tremendously insecure”
Etc.
Today Trump will start dismantling the safety net and undermine US economic policy that has stood the nation in good stead for decades. Undermining NAFTA because Trump thinks that this will bring back manufacturing jobs (reality is that the jobs aren’t coming back and manufacturing output hasn’t been higher in decades - mostly due to automation and productivity gains). Harming alliances and treaty obligations sends the dollar to new lows on market trades, making it more expensive to export (harming domestic corps). Etc. This is an administration that is incompetent and unprepared from day 1 to do anything other than dismantle govt. That was what they want to do, and they’ve got a Congress ready to take an axe to it, no matter the consequences.

States require filing amending papers, whether it is ownership changes or changes to business form (from a LLC to a LP). These can be anything from a certificate of dissolution and new business created, or amending the certificate of incorporation.
Trump hasn’t done any of this. He is still the owner of record. A search for Trump named businesses in NY comes back with any number of his self-promoting name businesses, and he’s still the owner or CEO of record.

I watched Schindler’s List in high school too and I was nearly at tears at the end of it especially in the scene where Schindler is weeping that he could have done more and Stern tells him about the saying from the Talmud about “Whoever saves one, saves the world entire.” I refuse to be divided by race, gender, religion(or there lack of), sexual orientation, nationality, etc. I acknowledge I’m a straight white male from a predominately Christian family but i’m not going to use that fact to say someone matters less than me. Despite what idiots like Spencer say, I’m not “ashamed” of my heritage but my heritage isn’t their heritage. My heritage is of people whose love for each other transcended religion(my great grandfather was Lutheran, his wife was Catholic), class (my dad’s father was well off, my dad’s mother was not(, and today ethnicity (my brother is married to a Hispanic who has indigenous and Jewish heritage as well.)

Not just Merrick Garland, but a whole bunch of Federal judgeships as well. The GOP may not have planned all that with the idea they would win, but it certainly worked in their favour.
Moreover, with the filibuster gone for Federal judgeships, it would seem likely that would now be difficult to stop, except for the blue slip question for senators (watch that get blown out of the water if the Democrats try to use it).

Moreover, with the filibuster gone for Federal judgeships, it would seem likely that would now be difficult to stop, except for the blue slip question for senators (watch that get blown out of the water if the Democrats try to use it).

Ended up getting a letter of recommendation from her when I transferred so obviously I can handle someone whose views differ from mine. I had an ultra liberal professor who challenged me to find the positives of Andrew Jackson and Carnegie and Alexander Hamilton even though i found little to like about eithervgoinh in. That’s good teaching. Bad teaching is asking why is the Obama stimulus bad. Why or why not would be fine.

I was a nice Dad and went with our son to his dental appointment to get his first two wisdom teeth pulled this AM. The lucky kid has made it to adulthood and never had anything really painful (medically) happen to him so today he got an education. I was pulling his leg a bit prior to the appointment but he blew off my BS and went through it like a trooper.

I was a nice Dad and went with our son to his dental appointment to get his first two wisdom teeth pulled this AM. The lucky kid has made it to adulthood and never had anything really painful (medically) happen to him so today he got an education. I was pulling his leg a bit prior to the appointment but he blew off my BS and went through it like a trooper.
Now he gets to enjoy drugs and sitting on his ass for the day and that’s just fine with him.
Last time I ever got drunk on whiskey was after I had my wisdom teeth out and the anesthetic started wearing off…

It was meant to counteract China’s trade influence, but the reason so many progressive/environmental groups were against it was because of the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) portion - it would have allowed foreign corps to sue governments for environmental and consumer protection laws that supposedly “interfered” with their profits.
NAFTA has an ISDS provision already, and TransCanada used it to sue the Obama admin over rejecting the Keystone Pipeline (something that’s moot now, since I assume Pumpkin Pinochet will let it sail on through)

Starting in 2010, the man who would become the top spokesman for the President of the United States devoted scoops of tweets to attacking the beady frozen treat known as the “Ice Cream of the Future.”
Sean Spicer kept his cream conflict going for five years — stretching through his tenure with the Republican National Committee.
On April 7, 2010, Spicer — then working for Endeavor Global Strategies, a PR firm he cofounded — let it be known to his Twitter flock: “Dippin dots is NOT the ice cream of the future.”
In September 2011, after Spicer had joined the Republican National Committee as communications director, he brought back the issue, writing: “I think I have said this before but Dippin Dots are notthe ice cream of the future (sic).”
Two months later, Spicer shared a Wall Street Journal story about Dippin’ Dots filing for bankruptcy.
His resentment seemed to melt for a few years, until September 2015. By then, he had advanced to become the RNC’s chief strategist.

I’m going to have to disagree that broadly-defined “global trade” doesn’t benefit American workers: I’m sure that the workers at Boeing are extremely happy to be able to export their aircraft beyond the American market. TPP faced a lot of resistance in Japan due to fears that American rice growers would flood the local market.
NAFTA is a very specific case: Mexico is physically adjacent to us with good transportation links and lower wages. These conditions are not replicated for TPP countries (except in so far as Mexico is one); I suppose all the companies might threaten to run out and move their factories to Malaysia, but that seems like rather a larger step. Post-US-in-TPP we are either going to see a collapse of the agreement with China picking up the pieces, or a somewhat weird Japan-led version of the bloc which will be … interesting.
I have to admit I have a somewhat contrary view of “global trade.” IMO being willing to trade with the poorer countries of the world is the single greatest humanitarian act the US has ever engaged in, far eclipsing any development aid we have ever given. Should we have managed the domestic impact better? Indeed. (And it could have been done.) But from a global perspective, it’s been a great thing. Almost by definition, a poor country is going to have lower wages and looser employment laws (and so did we a century ago, ahem), but to refuse to trade with them for that reason is to guarantee it’s not going to get any better.

I’ve seen the backlash hit hard against our marches on Saturday. I expected some of it but it’s unhinged some people, including Trump. And I processed it and I get why they’re so rattled and lashing out.
We were supposed to just accept it, lie down, and take our beating. We were supposed to do what is “best for the country and accept that things have changed.” And these marches made the authoritarians and others that voted him in understand that we don’t have to listen to them or do what they say.
They’ve had in their heads for years that there is this vast liberal conspiracy, this strange paranoia. Well, seeing a couple of million people marching and protesting across the country validated their fever dreams.
So, now what do they do?
They probably get 2 years with a majority at the rate things are going. They’ve got to shove their agenda through quickly. But this won’t last. Trump is reverting back to things that Republican presidents had in place before. As soon as the Dems are back in office we’ll just override them again.
The Republican base is shrinking and dying. The world has changed. This is the last gasp, the Hail Mary pass.
And Democrats have already learned from the election. We’ll take our two years of fighting and losing, then we’ll take it all back. People are learning very quickly that Trump conned them into voting for him. And if the Republicans decide it’s time to impeach him and kill him off, that vindictive asshole is taking down everyone he can with him.

In terms of super-high tech, then the US does benefit from free trade: there are few companies that can keep up with Boeing on the world market.
But as I mentioned in an earlier post that my issue with globalism is this: we try to compete not only on wages (which we should do, our impetus to be more productive and work smarter) but also on worker safety and environmental regulations.
That is really damaging not only our job market, but it provides no incentive for other nations to shape up and clean up their act.
All we get in exchange for that sort of low-to-medium tech trade-off are cheap goods and sub-minimum-wage jobs at Wal-Mart selling it.

In my opinion that is its stated purpose.
Its actual purpose is to place transnational corporations outside of any national, social or ethical attachments. It is meant to protect corporate profits and nothing more.
That it makes sure copyright, trademarks and patents are protected while making not the slightest effort to protect wages or the environment gives away the game. It also impoverishes the nations involved as things like paying taxes is removed as a corporate responsibility.
In addition it undermines national sovereignty through Investor-State Dispute Settlement. Essentially any law that is brought into being in a nation can be bought before an arbitration board and if found to be ‘damaging a corporation’s investment’ then the nation is under obligation to cover the corporation’s investment and any profits that might have come from the investment. Meaning the taxpayers will be paying a corporation.
I’m not against trade but it’s been awhile since any ‘free trade agreement’ has actually been about trade.

Because that’d be an admission against interest - Trump has spent past year claiming the economy is awful - worst ever - and got enough people to buy into that bullshit that they elected him. The same people who endured 10%+ unemployment when Obama took office and are seeing 5% now think that things are worse off for them.
Yeah, there’s a huge disconnect, and that goes to how the media has been playing things for a long time now.
