Confirmed: The Narcissist in Chief Brought a Cheering Section With Him to His CIA Speech

Like a third world despot
Politics • Views: 59,256

At Donald Trump’s bizarre narcissistic speech in front of the CIA’s wall memorializing agents who lost their lives serving the US, one of the most jarring notes was the applauding and cheering when Trump blathered out his signature talking points, or when he bragged about how many times he’d been on the cover of TIME magazine. (Yes, he really did this.)

Now, thanks to UK paper The Independent, we know for sure what many of us already suspected: that cheering section wasn’t composed of CIA employees. It was a group of Trump sycophants he brought with him to make it look as if the CIA loved him.

Pool reports later clarified that the attendants who were cheering and clapping when Mr Trump spoke were not CIA staffers but people who accompanied Mr Trump to the briefing.

For their sake, I hope they were paid in cash, because Trump is known for stiffing the actors he brings to his events.

Our newly minted president has to carry a cheering section with him for his speeches, even where such cheering is totally inappropriate. Puts all those years of counting “Me” and “I” in every speech in perspective, doesn’t it?

Bill Simmons had Seth Meyers and Michael Schur on his podcast this week they both worked with Trump on his ‘04 appearance on SNL, this is what they said about him:

Meyers: But he never understood why it was funny. The first time the audience laughed, you can see a genuine look of pleased surprise — it was a pleasant surprise.

Schur: He is a heat-seeking missile in that way, in terms of adulation. As the audience responded favorably, he then sort of puffed up and got happier, and then the sketch worked really well because of that, I think. … Weird days.

That seems to be the best explanation of who and what Trump is.

See, Jeb had the wrong idea. He thought he should be able to elicit applause by giving coherent speeches. If he’s just spent some money to hire actors, he might have been president.

So, first question to every media appearance where 45 says something and applause erupts - are they Trump’s people, paid gaslighters, or authentic applause points.

Actions have consequences. Trump has made it his mission to spin every appearance as a love fest for him, no matter how it actually appears. Show up at CIA; get own employees to cheer him while CIA looks on wondering WTF.

The GOP wont stand up against this nonsense, because they’re basking in the power glow of having total control over the levers of power. It’s up to the rest of us to show that none of this is what our nation is about or should even be. 45 is pushing a fascist approach to our nation and intends to break government’s very core for its own sake.

I’m not feeling clever enough to do it* but there’s an article to be done addressing the press about the fact that access journalism has gone from merely useless and cynical to actively harmful.

I mean, it used to be that it was just normal shitty—soft questions, free airtime to recite talking points. Now it’s weaponized shitty—you bring them on, your show is being jacked to crap out disinformation; you go to their press conference, they recite bullshit to captive microphones and a few elect sycophants. After Trump at the CIA, Sean Spicer yesterday, and Conway and Priebus today…plus Trump importing the sheep from Animal Farm…the “we tenderly caress their feelings with nuru gel, live” format of news is just contributing to the death of a free press.

* okay, I’m clever enough, but my version would probably involve way too much use of permutations of “fuckbake,” and would include two blasphemous references to the Robot Pope.

I think the Washington Post agrees:
Anyone — citizen or journalist — who is surprised by false claims from the new inhabitant of the Oval Office hasn’t been paying attention. That was reinforced when Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told “Meet the Press” Sunday that Spicer had been providing “alternative facts” to what the media had reported, making it clear we’ve gone full Orwell.

White House press briefings are “access journalism,” in which official statements — achieved by closeness to the source — are taken at face value and breathlessly reported as news. And that is over. Dead.

When did the GOP pass this law to screw over poor people?

Refund Timing for Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit Filers

The IRS will begin to release EITC/ACTC refunds starting Feb. 15. However, the IRS cautions taxpayers that these refunds likely won’t arrive in bank accounts or debit cards until the week of February 27 — if there are no processing issues with the tax return and the taxpayer chose direct deposit. This additional period is due to several factors, including banking and financial systems needing time to process deposits.

Where’s My Refund? ‎on irs.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app will be updated with projected deposit dates for early EITC /ACTC refund filers a few days after Feb. 15. Taxpayers will not see a refund date on Where’s My Refund? ‎or through their software packages until then. The IRS, tax preparers and tax software will not have additional information on refund dates, so Where’s My Refund? remains the best way to check the status of a refund.

Why is my refund being held?
Beginning in 2017, if you claim the EITC or ACTC on your tax return, the IRS must hold your refund until Feb. 15. This new law requires the IRS to hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with the EITC or ACTC. Like previous years, some tax refunds may be held if there are questions about the tax return or the IRS needs more information.

lawhawk  Jan 22, 2017 • 5:05:49pm

re: #25 Timothy Watson

There were significant issues with EITC filings in the past several years, and Congress passed a law requiring additional scrutiny for those filings. That same law also addressed issues with fraud and phishing/internet scams, has slowed refund procedures to verify that the returns are going to the persons who are actually to the proper parties.

Addendum:
Of course, Mnuchin during his confirmation hearing had to admit that the IRS is undermanned and that getting compliance is hard to do when you don’t have enough people checking returns, doing audits, and making sure that people are paying taxes owed.

The GOP helped create this situation by undermining the IRS compliance in the first place - and that Mnuchin didn’t know this going in shows just how unprepared he is.

Absolute minimum:

There is zero reason to have Kellyanne Conway on your show.

Nothing is gained by it, she has no interest in plain speech. She’s being paid to parse Trump statements that sound like solid promises into a fine mist, and to DARVO any situation that reflects poorly on her boss.

Her job is the inverse of reporting.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Courts went with the political question doctrine to dismiss the complaint. But looking at the names attached to the complaint, those are some heavy hitters among constitutional law scholars. They will have anticipated the argument and have a half dozen arguments against it.

Have you seen the judiciary? There’s quite a few empty seats on the federal bench because the GOP has been anticipating this very moment - the ability to pack the bench with a bunch of extremists who are willing to undo the safety net and protections that the past 50 years have brought. Garland was only the tip of a very large iceberg of judicial vacancies.

I worry that the GOP will pack the courts with unqualified or extreme nominees who are going to roll back civil and voting rights despite clear precedence.

Rooting for Matt Ryan to make sure it doesn’t happen since the Steelers aren’t going ot be able to. Sorry, I know I sound bitter but man I despise that team. I won’t distract our discussion with my football rants though guys. I don’t want to come off whiny. Just feeling like it put a dagger in my day. My brother’s basketball team that I coached has a good chance to do well though. We won our fifth straight today and one of our freshmen (we primarily have sophomores since my brother is one) had a great game so I’m pumped about that.

1. Population of Peru is 50% Japanese.
2. Islam was part of the founding of the Russian Orthodox Church.
3. Current CIA director converted to Islam a week before Trump’s inauguration.
4. Muslims are exempt from “Obamacare.”
5. The return of Patrick Beverly would mean no more triple-doubles for James Harden. (Harden had a triple-double in Beverly’s first start after his injury.)
6. Muslims that are American citizens are less American than him.

I have two really good pals who are Boys fan and even though your guys beat my guys in a heartbreaker this season, I have a lot of respect for Dak and Zek Elliott in a way I defintiely don’t for NE. But as I said, I don’t want to piss and moan over sports on a political blog. Just wanted to rant and get back to some discussion before I called it a night. I’m actually pretty happy with how the Steelers season went. I was just hoping they could make the SB and maybe win it all so I could have an excuse to visit some family in Pittsburgh.

Dubya came into office with two convictions: He was right about everything, and that Bill’s people couldn’t be trusted. Which is why when they came to him with what they believed to be credible evidence that a major terrorist attack was imminent, he blew them off and had his cabal of cronies convince him that the evidence was of questionable reliability because it had come from work done during Bill’s presidency. Likewise when it came time to begin orchestrating the Iraq War, he had an office created specifically to feed him the intel that “justified” the war, but then proceeded to hang the intel failures on the CIA when it became obvious that he’d been fed a load of horseshit at his own orders.

Hanlon’s razor applies when talking about Dubya and Trump.

I’m just pissed that the yam has even ruined the excitement of having my team go to the Superbowl. I mean, what’s unusual about a native New Yorker rooting for a Boston team?

Oh, and he’s not going to the Superbowl because he’s Trump’s friend. Sorry, not sorry, that I’m happy for my team.

Just when I was feeling better. Hey be happy. Just be prepared to hurl when him and Trump kiss each other’s ass if they win the SB. Oh and honestly don’t let it ruin your excitement. I knew some people who let Schilling ruin their joy of the Sox winning the WS in 2004 when he came out for Bush. Granted that team ahd waited 86 years and not 2. BTW I’m a little tipsy so I’m a little bitter. I won’t give you a hard time though because I consider you a friend and respect ya.

I’ve met them several times at sporting events. 41 is a decent man, and surely does not recognize today’s GOP. His nickname while a congressman was “Rubbers” because he enthusiastically supported birth control measures and Planned Parenthood. Such support today would have had him excommunicated and probably accused of being un-American.

His father was on PP’s board too. I don’t like what HW Bush said about atheists and being patrotic but as someone on the autistic spectrum, I do appreciate him signing the Americans with Disabilities Act and I admire the hell out of his WWII record. Contrasted with Trump, this was a young man who had all sorts of privilege and didn’t care and put himself in harms way. I would have voted for Dukakis and Bill Clinton but H.W Bush wasn’t a bad first full term to spend your early years with. (I was born the last year and change of Reagan).

Ditto. She’s window dressing, another possession to display. Were she to become disabled or disfigured (God forbid) through accident or illness I think he’d just write her a check (maybe) then walk away and never look back. I’m pretty sure she knows this on some level, so I have a hard time feeling much hostility towards her (so far).

Melania did a deal with Donald and he changed the terms (typical). She never signed up for this First Lady stuff but I imagine he’s got her by the prenup, and I doubt any court would rule that his election was an unbearable hardship …

I’m wondering if the new administration is backtracking a bit on the ambassador “firings.” NewsHour Weekend tonight had an interview with an ambassador appointed by Obama who, they mentioned in passing, would be staying on. I believe they also backtracked on the Inaugural announcer, but he said ‘no thanks.’

A mate of mine in England was busted at a demo, had his glasses smashed and was roughed up by the cops, who booked him for assaulting an officer. He is about 5’ 6” and slight. The arresting officer was over 6’ and burly. The magistrate looked from one to the other, confirmed who was charged with assaulting whom, banged his gavel and said “case dismissed.” A rare triumph of judicial common sense.

Oh, I don’t know. I could well be wrong and it could be one of those things that is commonly attributed. The interesting thing is Ted Williams, the baseball player was a big supporter of his and if I rememebr Leigh Monville’s bio of Teddy Ballgame, Ted was an atheist or agnostic. Either way, I like H.W. Bush. I think his son was out of his league but the Republican Party would have been better served nominating him in 1980 and not Reagan. He’s a good guy. I’d love to be like him when I’m older. The way that Donald sees her is as someone of suitable genetic stock to sire a suitable heir to his empire, and to act as a trophy for public events - and he pays her well to act in that role. To him, women are property to be used and exploited at his whim. He has proven time and again that he is a true narcissistic egomaniac who loves only himself, and desires only absolute unquestioned power for himself. Hostility toward Melania? Not really. I do feel pity though, as she will be jettisoned as soon as he feels that she is no longer required to forward his goals. He has done it twice before, and the word fidelity is not in his vocabulary.

The photo on the upper right in the tweet in lawhawk’s #79 speaks volumes. Michelle & Barack are being kind, touching her back to include her, unlike her husband who simply turns around and walks ahead, by himself. He didn’t look back until he noticed he’d walked through the door alone. Him I have no problem feeling hostility towards.

I am sick of that shit. The vast majority of registered Democrats favored Clinton over him and it wasn’t even close. And secondly he’s still not even a Democrat. So why the hell should we have nominated someone to represent our party who doesn’t even want to be in our party. The other thing they ignore is how poorly Bernie was doing with crucial elements of the base. A lot was and I agree with it made up about how Clinton did with younger voters but those people never talked about how poorly Bernie did with minority voters and those voters and I say this as a younger voter are much more reliable voters than the younger ones. Plus Bernie’s hypocrisy about closed primaries while he was benefitting from the caucuses really ticked me off.

Good technique.

If anyone honestly deserves the snowflake label, it’s them. I said it in the Spring but had Bernie been the nominee despite my problems with him both as a candidate and quite honestly as a potential President (Yes BBs, not all of us thought that Bernie was just wrong because we thought he wouldn’t win but had problems with him as a potential pres too), I would have still supported him strongly for the Presidency since the alternative would be Trump and I know Bernie at least has his heart in teh right place.

Yeah an Ashcroft-Gonzalez-Mukasey DOJ would not have gone for legalization in the states. They would have fought it. Essentially, the only social issues I can really see that they overlap on is the government not telling you what you can do with your body, and legal weed.

Probably can with our government’s investigations. Can’t do shit about any other government.

This is important. Every major government has an equivalent to the CIA; some of them often exchange data with the CIA, but still pursue their own interests (cough, Israel). And all of them will squeeze every contact they have to find out what’s going on in the U.S., and try to slant it to their own interests. Some may conclude that cozying up with Trump is the way to go right now, some may not. Britain and Israel probably do, on balance, but I’m sure that any agreement would be tentative; China and Japan and India and Pakistan, among others, definitely have different interests than the U.S. does.

For myself, I’d love to lose most of the foreign-based military bases the U.S. has, and NATO probably could use a bit of an overhaul — Blair and Clinton tried to do one, but even to the extent they succeeded, that’s almost 20 years ago. Some of Trump’s ideas are not, at root, nuts but severely undiplomatic, which means that in practice they are indeed nuts. Where are the grownups? Bring back Samantha Power! :-)

Well, I didn’t have to worry too much about those battles, because I stayed out of them at places such as Daily Kos. And when it became apparent that Sen. Sanders was not going to win the primaries, I threw my support behind Sec’y Clinton.

I had no illusions that Sanders would have had a real tough row to hoe against any Republican candidate. Everything from his honeymoon in the Soviet Union to his tax plan would have been thrown at him.

True libertarians also are not in favor of imposing religious beliefs or controlling what you read or say. So maybe it’s more cultural issues where the two parties are not opposites.

On the other hand, they tend not to care about the issues most important to the Green Party; and the few who care about the environment want only free market solutions and not government impositions.

See, that’s why I respect you. You acknowledge that Sanders had weaknesses. A lot of the diehard Bernie supporters I know and I include my own brothers among them ignored that. They just focused on the hypothetical polls that were taken well before any Bernie debate with a Republican nominee or any serious Bernie attacks by the RNC and their allies. Officially the Libertarian Party is opposed to the Public Accommodation laws.

In practice, that means they are opposed to freedom of religion or civil rights.

My usual argument against repealing public accommodation laws goes like this:

I live in a town with one store. The store owner knows I am atheist. If he chooses to ban me because I am an atheist, the next store is sixteen miles away.

That town also only has one store. If that owner, who also knows I am an atheist bans me, the next store is sixty miles away.

In theory, the idea of “my business should be able to ban anyone I don’t want to do business with” sounds fair; in practice, it legalises discrimination.

Agreed on all counts. Another thing and this certainly isn’t all Libertarians but a lot of the ones that worship Paul and son but alot of them come from the Von Mises school in economics, the Von Mises School is big on telling its adherents to ignore real life data and just focus on theory. In that way, Von Mises Libertarians are actually a lot like diehard Marxists who insist if we just do what Marx wrote, we’d be fine. I admit it, I haven’t studied economics heavily but one reason why I’m definitely a Keynesian is that John Maynard Keynes valued real life data rather than abstract theory. Theory is great when you’re coming up with ideas but when it comes to real life things like economics that do effect real people, theory needs to be ignored in favor of what’s really going on.

And that spousal rape is not a thing is likely based in religious views.

My understanding is Sen. Sessions doesn’t think spousal rape is a thing either. I’m guessing a DOJ under him is not going to be big on prosecuting such cases.

In my own state, the idea of spousal rape being a crime is very recent.

Until 1976, state laws carried “spousal exceptions” to rape under which a husband who raped his wife could avoid conviction based on the marital relationship. However, Nebraska became the first state to abolish the spousal exception to rape. From that point forward, a rape defendant could not escape prosecution because he was married to his alleged victim. (State v. Willis, 394 N.W.2d 648 (1986).)

I mean it’s not like he said he’d put ice down the shirt of the back of the Iraqi President as a gag. Goddamn, this man’s FP is so reckless, so stupid, so ignorant. But hey economic anxiety amirite?

Well, I would argue that not all Trump’s supporters are racists, but damn near all the racists voted for Trump.

And that spousal rape is not a thing is likely based in religious views.

My understanding is Sen. Sessions doesn’t think spousal rape is a thing either. I’m guessing a DOJ under him is not going to be big on prosecuting such cases.

In my own state, the idea of spousal rape being a crime is very recent.

criminaldefenselawyer.com

That scares me about Sessions but I’m not surprised. No, that’s definitely not based in religious views. My grandparents were all Catholic like Black is and I can’t imagine either of my grandfathers thinking spousal rape was oaky. But eyah spousal rape is a frighteningly recent concept. I remember being shocked that the last state to criminalize it, NC did so in the early 90’s. Sessions is just agh so abd. I mean even if you buy the lies on his Civil Rights record involving African-Americans and I sure as hell don’t, there’s his record with LGBT people, there’s his record with the disabled. The guy is not an advocate for all Americans. The guy makes Ashcroft look like Bobby Kennedy. Okay, I exageerrate there but you get it..

I think a lot of them were indifferent to it. BTW there’s a great article on Buzzfeed by a woman of Arab Christian/Polish-Lithuanian descent who grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pa who talks about how people like her who aren’t of exclusively European background were ignored when politicians talked about the Rust Belt. I found it very poignant. I’m of exclusively European background but there as a time where my own ancestors faced hostilty in those same areas because they looked different than their Irish, Welsh, German, and other neighbors. I guess that’s why I’m so bummed that my one cousin is a Trumper. Man, he’s a good guy. Makes us the best snacks every Christmas but he got Trump fever.

Well, the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church makes no distinction between spousal rape and any other kind of rape.

2356 Rape is the forcible violation of the sexual intimacy of another person. It does injury to justice and charity. Rape deeply wounds the respect, freedom, and physical and moral integrity to which every person has a right. It causes grave damage that can mark the victim for life. It is always an intrinsically evil act. Graver still is the rape of children committed by parents (incest) or those responsible for the education of the children entrusted to them.

I have a complicated relationship with the RCC. I love their advocacy for the impoverished, immigrants, and others but their ingrained homophobia and sexism bother me equally as well as the cover-ups of the child abuse.

It does appear that Pope Francis is trying to get to the bottom of the abuse scandals and root them out.

The Catholic Church as an institution has a very long history and like all institutions tend to resist change. That said, the Pope is trying to move it in the right direction.

Moreover, the Catholic Church isn’t the only church with those problems. Protestant churches do it too. The Catholic Church makes a better target for folks that don’t like them.

Oh yeah I know. It’s definitely not unique to the RCC. And I agree with you about Francis, he’s been very good for the church.

I get the impression a significant number of Protestants and atheists treat the Catholic Church the same way they treat Muslims:

One Muslim does something bad, it is a reflection on all Muslims everywhere in the world.
One Protestant does something bad, that’s “Well, Main Street Bible Church doesn’t reflect on all Protestant churches.”

I imagine even before Pope Francis took the Throne of Peter that the overwhelming majority of Catholic priests, nuns, &c would just as strongly oppose child abuse as any other person. The RCC just makes an easy target for those who don’t like it.

G’night. I need to get off to bed too, I have a sixty mile one-way drive tomorrow to get insulin for the cat. Good thing the only vet doesn’t ban atheists or I would have to go to Cheyenne.

Earlier today, on another blog I follow, I tried to defend HRC when someone started railing against political dynasties, arguing that while it may amount to an unfair advantage for someone who has no relevant experience to run for office or get a job based on his or her name or family ties, Hillary Clinton was independently qualified to be President, and didn’t really need to ride her husband’s coattails or rely on the pull of the Clinton name.

The other person countered with the argument that HRC never would have even gotten all the opportunities she did in the past 15 years had it not been for the fact her husband was President, and at that point I was at a bit of a loss, since the Clinton name clearly does carry quite a bit of weight in those circles, and powerful connections they’d made during his administration would certainly have generated more opportunities than otherwise would’ve been available to her. I hold that this doesn’t, however, invalidate the argument that she performed well at her roles as Senator and SoS, and was thoroughly qualified for the role of POTUS.

Still, it did make me wonder how many votes she’d lost as a consequence of the general disgust with political dynasties, experience notwithstanding.

IMO, that was quite minor. I never heard it around here. My guess is that Comey was #1, voter suppression was #2, Russians were #3.

It did pop up at least once. A few of us pointed out the same argument and it went away.
