Confirmed: The Narcissist in Chief Brought a Cheering Section With Him to His CIA Speech

At Donald Trump’s bizarre narcissistic speech in front of the CIA’s wall memorializing agents who lost their lives serving the US, one of the most jarring notes was the applauding and cheering when Trump blathered out his signature talking points, or when he bragged about how many times he’d been on the cover of TIME magazine. (Yes, he really did this.)

Now, thanks to UK paper The Independent, we know for sure what many of us already suspected: that cheering section wasn’t composed of CIA employees. It was a group of Trump sycophants he brought with him to make it look as if the CIA loved him.

Pool reports later clarified that the attendants who were cheering and clapping when Mr Trump spoke were not CIA staffers but people who accompanied Mr Trump to the briefing.

For their sake, I hope they were paid in cash, because Trump is known for stiffing the actors he brings to his events.

Bill Simmons had Seth Meyers and Michael Schur on his podcast this week they both worked with Trump on his ‘04 appearance on SNL, this is what they said about him:

Meyers: But he never understood why it was funny. The first time the audience laughed, you can see a genuine look of pleased surprise — it was a pleasant surprise.

Schur: He is a heat-seeking missile in that way, in terms of adulation. As the audience responded favorably, he then sort of puffed up and got happier, and then the sketch worked really well because of that, I think. … Weird days.

That seems to be the best explanation of who and what Trump is.

So, first question to every media appearance where 45 says something and applause erupts - are they Trump’s people, paid gaslighters, or authentic applause points.

Actions have consequences. Trump has made it his mission to spin every appearance as a love fest for him, no matter how it actually appears. Show up at CIA; get own employees to cheer him while CIA looks on wondering WTF.

The GOP wont stand up against this nonsense, because they’re basking in the power glow of having total control over the levers of power. It’s up to the rest of us to show that none of this is what our nation is about or should even be. 45 is pushing a fascist approach to our nation and intends to break government’s very core for its own sake.

The IRS will begin to release EITC/ACTC refunds starting Feb. 15. However, the IRS cautions taxpayers that these refunds likely won’t arrive in bank accounts or debit cards until the week of February 27 — if there are no processing issues with the tax return and the taxpayer chose direct deposit. This additional period is due to several factors, including banking and financial systems needing time to process deposits.

Where’s My Refund? ‎on irs.gov and the IRS2Go mobile app will be updated with projected deposit dates for early EITC /ACTC refund filers a few days after Feb. 15. Taxpayers will not see a refund date on Where’s My Refund? ‎or through their software packages until then. The IRS, tax preparers and tax software will not have additional information on refund dates, so Where’s My Refund? remains the best way to check the status of a refund.

Why is my refund being held?
Beginning in 2017, if you claim the EITC or ACTC on your tax return, the IRS must hold your refund until Feb. 15. This new law requires the IRS to hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with the EITC or ACTC. Like previous years, some tax refunds may be held if there are questions about the tax return or the IRS needs more information.

There were significant issues with EITC filings in the past several years, and Congress passed a law requiring additional scrutiny for those filings. That same law also addressed issues with fraud and phishing/internet scams, has slowed refund procedures to verify that the returns are going to the persons who are actually to the proper parties.

Addendum:
Of course, Mnuchin during his confirmation hearing had to admit that the IRS is undermanned and that getting compliance is hard to do when you don’t have enough people checking returns, doing audits, and making sure that people are paying taxes owed.

The GOP helped create this situation by undermining the IRS compliance in the first place - and that Mnuchin didn’t know this going in shows just how unprepared he is.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Courts went with the political question doctrine to dismiss the complaint. But looking at the names attached to the complaint, those are some heavy hitters among constitutional law scholars. Have you seen the judiciary? There’s quite a few empty seats on the federal bench because the GOP has been anticipating this very moment - the ability to pack the bench with a bunch of extremists who are willing to undo the safety net and protections that the past 50 years have brought. Garland was only the tip of a very large iceberg of judicial vacancies.

I worry that the GOP will pack the courts with unqualified or extreme nominees who are going to roll back civil and voting rights despite clear precedence.

My brother’s basketball team that I coached has a good chance to do well though. We won our fifth straight today and one of our freshmen (we primarily have sophomores since my brother is one) had a great game so I’m pumped about that.

I have two really good pals who are Boys fan and even though your guys beat my guys in a heartbreaker this season, I have a lot of respect for Dak and Zek Elliott in a way I defintiely don’t for NE. Likewise when it came time to begin orchestrating the Iraq War, he had an office created specifically to feed him the intel that “justified” the war, but then proceeded to hang the intel failures on the CIA when it became obvious that he’d been fed a load of horseshit at his own orders.

Hanlon’s razor applies when talking about Dubya and Trump.

His father was on PP’s board too. I don’t like what HW Bush said about atheists and being patrotic but as someone on the autistic spectrum, I do appreciate him signing the Americans with Disabilities Act and I admire the hell out of his WWII record. Contrasted with Trump, this was a young man who had all sorts of privilege and didn’t care and put himself in harms way. I would have voted for Dukakis and Bill Clinton but H.W Bush wasn’t a bad first full term to spend your early years with. (I was born the last year and change of Reagan).

The interesting thing is Ted Williams, the baseball player was a big supporter of his and if I rememebr Leigh Monville’s bio of Teddy Ballgame, Ted was an atheist or agnostic. Either way, I like H.W. Bush. I think his son was out of his league but the Republican Party would have been better served nominating him in 1980 and not Reagan. He’s a good guy. I’d love to be like him when I’m older. Full of life and a senes of humor (Did you ever read about the prank he pulled on Barbara). I always had the impression of him as a bit of a tight ass before then.

The way that Donald sees her is as someone of suitable genetic stock to sire a suitable heir to his empire, and to act as a trophy for public events - and he pays her well to act in that role. Well if it makes you feel any better, I volunteered for a campaign today. My job has made me more comfortable talking to actual people face to face or on the phone so I volunteered for the gubernatorial campaign here. The guy’s an underdog but he’s a good guy. Anyhow go Falcons in a couple weeks but it’s nothing personal, only sports. I’d root against those two even if I knew they were huge liberals but I won’t lie, knowing Tommy’s love for the Trumpy makes it a little easier. But I won’t be bitter.

I am sick of that shit. The vast majority of registered Democrats favored Clinton over him and it wasn’t even close. And secondly he’s still not even a Democrat. So why the hell should we have nominated someone to represent our party who doesn’t even want to be in our party. The other thing they ignore is how poorly Bernie was doing with crucial elements of the base. A lot was and I agree with it made up about how Clinton did with younger voters but those people never talked about how poorly Bernie did with minority voters and those voters and I say this as a younger voter are much more reliable voters than the younger ones. Plus Bernie’s hypocrisy about closed primaries while he was benefitting from the caucuses really ticked me off.

A lot of Libertarians aren’t even consistent on the doing what you want with your body one. I know plenty of so called libertarians who are anti-choice, anti-gay, etc. Granted I think a lot of those are merely conservatives in denial. I don’t see every Libertarian as a conservative who likes weed. I disagree with my libertarian friends but I do have respect for them to know their ideology isn’t that simple but I see a lot of people call themselves libertarians who clearly aren’t.

Right. And honestly I hated having a progressive dick battle. I wanted the Sanders supporters to tell me why Bernie would make a better president than Hillary and honestly they never convinced me hence why while I started out as lean Sanders, I ended up with her after having been a big critic of hers eight years earlier. I also found her far more inclusive and willing to talk about things that matter to me. Don’t get me wrong. I’d love affordable college education for all American students but we need to do stuff once they’re there too so they succeed both there and in the job market afterwards. Getting a BA is one of my proudest accomplishments but it hasn’t guaranteed me a job per say either.

And all of them will squeeze every contact they have to find out what’s going on in the U.S., and try to slant it to their own interests. Some may conclude that cozying up with Trump is the way to go right now, some may not. Britain and Israel probably do, on balance, but I’m sure that any agreement would be tentative; China and Japan and India and Pakistan, among others, definitely have different interests than the U.S. does.

For myself, I’d love to lose most of the foreign-based military bases the U.S. has, and NATO probably could use a bit of an overhaul — Blair and Clinton tried to do one, but even to the extent they succeeded, that’s almost 20 years ago. Some of Trump’s ideas are not, at root, nuts but severely undiplomatic, which means that in practice they are indeed nuts. Where are the grownups? Bring back Samantha Power! :-)

I wanted the Sanders supporters to tell me why Bernie would make a better president than Hillary and honestly they never convinced me hence why while I started out as lean Sanders, I ended up with her after having been a big critic of hers eight years earlier. I also found her far more inclusive and willing to talk about things that matter to me. Don’t get me wrong. I’d love affordable college education for all American students but we need to do stuff once they’re there too so they succeed both there and in the job market afterwards. True libertarians also are not in favor of imposing religious beliefs or controlling what you read or say. So maybe it’s more cultural issues where the two parties are not opposites.

On the other hand, they tend not to care about the issues most important to the Green Party; and the few who care about the environment want only free market solutions and not government impositions.

See, that’s why I respect you. You acknowledge that Sanders had weaknesses. A lot of the diehard Bernie supporters I know and I include my own brothers among them ignored that. They just focused on the hypothetical polls that were taken well before any Bernie debate with a Republican nominee or any serious Bernie attacks by the RNC and their allies. And honestly despite what they say, I really don’t think Bernie would have done as well in the Rust Belt as they say. The “S” word can scare those voters so easily.

Officially the Libertarian Party is opposed to the Public Accommodation laws.

In practice, that means they are opposed to freedom of religion or civil rights.

My usual argument against repealing public accommodation laws goes like this:

I live in a town with one store. The store owner knows I am atheist. If he chooses to ban me because I am an atheist, the next store is sixteen miles away.

That town also only has one store. If that owner, who also knows I am an atheist bans me, the next store is sixty miles away.

In theory, the idea of “my business should be able to ban anyone I don’t want to do business with” sounds fair; in practice, it legalises discrimination.

Agreed on all counts. Another thing and this certainly isn’t all Libertarians but a lot of the ones that worship Paul and son but alot of them come from the Von Mises school in economics, the Von Mises School is big on telling its adherents to ignore real life data and just focus on theory. In that way, Von Mises Libertarians are actually a lot like diehard Marxists who insist if we just do what Marx wrote, we’d be fine. I admit it, I haven’t studied economics heavily but one reason why I’m definitely a Keynesian is that John Maynard Keynes valued real life data rather than abstract theory. Theory is great when you’re coming up with ideas but when it comes to real life things like economics that do effect real people, theory needs to be ignored in favor of what’s really going on.

In my own state, the idea of spousal rape being a crime is very recent.

My grandparents were all Catholic like Black is and I can’t imagine either of my grandfathers thinking spousal rape was oaky. But eyah spousal rape is a frighteningly recent concept. BTW there’s a great article on Buzzfeed by a woman of Arab Christian/Polish-Lithuanian descent who grew up in Wilkes-Barre, Pa who talks about how people like her who aren’t of exclusively European background were ignored when politicians talked about the Rust Belt. I found it very poignant. I’m of exclusively European background but there as a time where my own ancestors faced hostilty in those same areas because they looked different than their Irish, Welsh, German, and other neighbors. I guess that’s why I’m so bummed that my one cousin is a Trumper. Man, he’s a good guy. Makes us the best snacks every Christmas but he got Trump fever.

I get the impression a significant number of Protestants and atheists treat the Catholic Church the same way they treat Muslims:

One Muslim does something bad, it is a reflection on all Muslims everywhere in the world.
One Protestant does something bad, that’s “Well, Main Street Bible Church doesn’t reflect on all Protestant churches.”

I imagine even before Pope Francis took the Throne of Peter that the overwhelming majority of Catholic priests, nuns, &c would just as strongly oppose child abuse as any other person. The RCC just makes an easy target for those who don’t like it.

Earlier today, on another blog I follow, I tried to defend HRC when someone started railing against political dynasties, arguing that while it may amount to an unfair advantage for someone who has no relevant experience to run for office or get a job based on his or her name or family ties, Hillary Clinton was independently qualified to be President, and didn’t really need to ride her husband’s coattails or rely on the pull of the Clinton name.

The other person countered with the argument that HRC never would have even gotten all the opportunities she did in the past 15 years had it not been for the fact her husband was President, and at that point I was at a bit of a loss, since the Clinton name clearly does carry quite a bit of weight in those circles, and powerful connections they’d made during his administration would certainly have generated more opportunities than otherwise would’ve been available to her. I hold that this doesn’t, however, invalidate the argument that she performed well at her roles as Senator and SoS, and was thoroughly qualified for the role of POTUS.

Still, it did make me wonder how many votes she’d lost as a consequence of the general disgust with political dynasties, experience notwithstanding.
