The most fucked up thing Duke does is try to scare old white people about “what your grandchildren’s playmates will look like.” Well Dave, my parents HAVE a Latina granddaughter who they love.

Jeremy Scahill, a journalist who’s appeared frequently on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” posted on Twitter that he won’t appear as a panelist Friday because of Yiannopoulos and what he represents.

“He has ample venues to spew his hateful diatribes. There is no value in ‘debating’ him,” Scahill tweeted. Appearing on Maher’s show will give Yiannopoulos a major platform for “his racist, anti-immigrant campaign,” wrote Scahill, co-founding editor of The Intercept news website.

I hated the ending. It was HER collar, and making it his murder was such a betrayal of everything that the show had stood for.

Bill Maher had Tomi Lahren on a few weeks ago. I’m not surprised that Milo Yiannopoulos will grace that fucking stage. Bill Maher has brought Ann Coulter onto his show probably a dozen times. Bill’s an asshole and gets along great with other assholes regardless of political bent. Bill hosts Milo ought to be great fuckin’ TV! Trump’s America will be showcased splendidly. en.m.wikipedia.org

The Edelweiss Pirates (Edelweißpiraten) were a loosely organized group of youth in Nazi Germany. They emerged in western Germany out of the German Youth Movement of the late 1930s in response to the strict regimentation of the Hitler Youth. Similar in many ways to the Leipzig Meuten, they consisted of young people, mainly between the ages of 14 and 17, who had evaded the Hitler Youth by leaving school (which was allowed at 14) and were also young enough to avoid military conscription, which was only compulsory from the age of 17 onward.

*

Subgroups of the Edelweißpiraten included the Navajos, centred on Cologne, the Kittelbach Pirates of Oberhausen and Düsseldorf, and the Roving Dudes of Essen. According to one Nazi official in 1941, “Every child knows who the Kittelbach Pirates are. They are everywhere; there are more of them than there are Hitler Youth… They beat up the patrols… They never take no for an answer.”

Hahaha!

*

Apart from gatherings on street corners, the Edelweißpiraten engaged in hiking and camping trips, defying the restrictions on free movement, which kept them away from the prying eyes of the totalitarian regime. They were highly antagonistic to the Hitler Youth, ambushing their patrols and taking great pride in beating them up. One of their slogans was “Eternal War on the Hitler Youth”.

They also wore their hair long. Respect.

You’re not helping, Tom:

Virginia gubernatorial candidate Tom Perriello apologized Wednesday after video surfaced of the former Democratic congressman comparing President Donald Trump’s victory to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

“The election of Donald Trump was a little bit like, you know, a political and constitutional September 11 for us, if I can be honest,” Perriello said in a video circulated on state conservative blog Bearing Drift and other right-leaning news outlets. Perriello made the remark Friday at a campaign event in Nelson County.

The nine-second video clip was uploaded to a YouTube account that appears to focus on opposition research against Democratic governors.

Yep, and Gillespie was RNC Chairman when they Swift Boat’d Kerry.

I think it sucks on a messaging level too. Every statewide Democrat, including Perriello, has been protesting and supporting legal action against Trump over his Muslim Ban.

So we’re going to invoke 9/11 in a political attack? 9/11, which involved Muslim terrorists here (mostly) on student visas? (Yeah, I know the countries the attackers originated from aren’t covered by Trump’s Muslim Ban but how many people have the time for that nuance?)

Let’s just ignore the preceding 8 years, where the market bottomed out during the Great Recession at 6700 (IIRC) and ended up over 19,000 (a record) - 19827 on inauguration day.

DJIA at 20611 today.

784 points. (Who said there would be math!?)

But sure, claim credit for a run that is a couple points. Meanwhile Fox claims that Obama was never responsible for the runup in the market that is several magnitudes greater.

GOP obstructionism, including refusing to act on a debt limit increase, which caused market palpitations and a lowering of the US credit (costing the nation, and everyone else) with higher risk and therefore higher borrowing costs going forward.

GOP obstructionism, which prolonged the recession because they refused to fund a sufficiently large enough stimulus package.

GOP obstructionism, which denied millions access to health insurance (ACA/Obamacare), despite all their claims of jobs lost has done the opposite, and any repeal would end up costing millions of jobs as a result.

re: #79 Joe Bacon

So far, nothing untowards has been uncovered, but it does shed some light on Trump’s financial situation:

A source familiar with Deutsche Bank’s internal review said it came after Trump’s bid to become US president made him a politically exposed person. Under banking regulations, PEPs undergo tougher scrutiny than regular clients because of their proximity to government.

After Trump’s victory in the US election in November the bank “double-checked” its records, the source said. The bank has also fielded numerous media inquiries about recent Trump loans, which were viewed as unorthodox among some bankers familiar with the transactions.

According to an analysis by Bloomberg, Trump now owes Deutsche around $300m. He has four large mortgages, all issued by Deutsche’s private bank. The loans are guaranteed against the president’s properties: a new deluxe hotel in Washington DC’s old Post Office building, just round the corner from the White House; his Chicago tower hotel; and the Trump National Doral Miami resort.

Donald Trump’s first 100 days as president - daily updates
Read more
In recent years the disgraced bank has been hit by a series of scandals. Last month the UK and US imposed record fines of $630m. Deutsche failed to prevent money laundering by its Moscow branch involving at least $10bn of Russian cash, regulators found.

Deutsche’s client relationship with Kushner was made public in a 2013 article in the New York Observer, which Kushner owned. Ivanka Trump, who formerly served as an executive in Trump’s real estate business, is also a client of Deutsche. She now works as an unofficial adviser in the White House.

Kushner’s mother, Seryl Stadtmauer, is also a client, according to a person familiar with the matter. The bank’s internal review looked at the president’s accounts as well as his wider family, it is understood.

The bank said it would not be drawn on what had prompted the internal examination, who had undertaken it or what its findings had been.

Deutsche said it would not say anything about whether the review had found any links between Trump’s loans and Moscow. However, two bank sources have told the Guardian that it found no evidence to show the loans had been underwritten by money from Moscow, or any Russian bank.

My great great grandfather was a conductor at an Underground Railroad station in DC. He’d be turning in his grave knowing that it’s back in business…

Maclean’s spoke with more than a dozen refugees of various nationalities who have made this cross-border trip, to better understand what their Canadian supporters call the new underground railroad—a largely informal and hush-hush network of word-of-mouth advisers, drivers and reportedly some smugglers. But sometimes it’s as simple as a couple of shivering migrants guided by the blinking northern lights cast by those wind turbines.

The routes they take are impossibly dark, through scrub brush, mud, snow and water, fuelled by fear of getting caught and turned back south. But after fleeing from beatings and risk of death back home, and long journeys often of detention and other perilous pathways, the entry to Canada is just their last mile of hell.

lawhawk  Feb 16, 2017 • 6:15:42am

re: #108 MsJ

The idiocy of this is astounding. Trump doesn’t know capabilities of the planes in question and thinks they can simply swap one for the other. That’s not how any of this works.

F-35 is a 6G fighter, with stealth, supercruise, and multiple versions including short takeoff and a naval aviation version.

The F-18 Super Hornet lacks stealth, supercruise, and only has a naval variation. It also lacks the radar and integration systems that the F-35 does.

You can’t simply bolt on stuff to the F-18 and say that’s a F-35 replacement. Boeing had a fly-off with the F-35 and lost that competition (Boeing’s X-32 didn’t match Lockheed’s plane in the JSF competition). That’s why Lockheed won the contract.

Doesn’t mean the costs aren’t out of control. They are.

But then when Trump says that he’s going to fight Lockheed’s move of the F-16 factory to India where they’re the only ones left buying it so to make room in the US for expanded F-35 production, you know he’s truly out of his depth. The whole point of a new production line is to reduce the per unit costs for the F-35, and that isn’t possible otherwise. But Trump thinks he can micromanage an industry he knows nothing about.

As a reminder, the last time Trump ventured into the aerospace business, he failed at a commuter airline on the lucrative but competitive NY-DC shuttle run.

Just imagine Mark Fields holding a corporate internal “secret” conference call with Mary Barra dialed in to the Webex as “Call In User” (which is not even allowed for meetings ranked as “secret”)

It would be even more stringent for Boeing and Lockheed because in addition to their own internal corporate confidentiality levels there are also government levels to maintain.

But what else can you expect from a dumbass who held a top secret briefing in the public dining area of his private country club.

Oh, gee, I’m sure that’s a bill Donald Trump will definitely veto! //

Exclusive: Big U.S. banks to push for easing of money laundering rules

America’s largest banks are to propose a complete overhaul of how financial institutions investigate and report potential criminal activity, arguing that rules imposed in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and strengthened during the Obama administration are onerous and ineffective, sources said. The Clearing House, a trade association representing the largest U.S. banks including Goldman Sachs (GS.N), JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) and Bank of America (BAC.N), has long raised concerns about the effectiveness of the current rules, but this will be the first time the group has publicly called for them to be revamped.

The proposal, which could be published as soon as Thursday, will set the stage for an intensive lobbying effort targeting bank regulators and members of the Senate and House of Representatives finance committees. President Donald Trump has said he wants to cut costly regulations for Wall Street.

To keep drug traffickers and terrorists from laundering money through the U.S. financial system, federal law mandates that bank employees file a Suspicious Activity Report (SAR) with authorities if they suspect transactions could be part of a crime.

Trump’s aiming for a self-created death spiral of the Obamacare individual marketplace, entirely as a result that subsidies for the market get reduced as revenues shrink because taxpayers aren’t being penalized for not having insurance.

This is the insidious extent to which Trump/GOP want to fuck over millions of Americans who currently have coverage, and the millions more who couldn’t get coverage because the GOP refused to expand Medicaid in their states under Obamacare.

My kids were raised on Middle Eastern food so it’s the same as pizza and hamburgers to them. It’s one of the few vegan options that Zedushka enjoys.

What makes it so good IMO are the many different flavors.

I made it once with dry chickpeas. Tasted like wall spackle. Local restaurant near me says the key is using the canned chickpeas.

I posted this on my Facebook wall and have lost one long ago friend over it:

On trying to respect other’s opinion on politics: let’s define what that means. If Joe believes low taxation is beneficial and Fred thinks high taxation is beneficial: that’s politics. If Joe thinks regulating the sale of widgets is beneficial and Fred thinks regulating the sale of widgets isn’t, that’s politics. If Joe thinks a misogynist fascist who lies incessantly is a better choice for a President and Fred thinks a misogynist fascist liar is a misogynist fascist liar that is damaging to our representative democracy, this is beyond merely politics. This is about human rights, moral relevance, and leadership. This is not a minor quibble over process or a kerfuffle over one’s favorite football team: this is consequential and irreconcilable.
If you have a relationship with a friend who supports a misogynist fascist that lies incessantly and you feel compelled to make your relationship work, maybe consider that the person supporting the misgynist fascist liar needs to make the relationship work. It’s their problem, not yours. They need to reconcile their positions, not you.

I use the canned ones; I have a fancy-ass blender (BlendTec) and first make my own tahini (sesame seed paste) which is an ingredient in the hummus. Sriracha hummus is awesome; I need to try a harissa recipe sometime. Rest of the family doesn’t like the hot stuff, so I get that all to myself.

Honestly if I had to have a conservative leaning AG, Acosta wouldn’t bother me. And yes I know this is for DOL but his background seems to be more in law than labor.

262
MsJ  Feb 16, 2017 • 9:05:58am

Federal revenue gained from taxing the benefits could be used to pay for changes to the Medicaid program for the poor, and to provide tax subsidies to help people buy health insurance on their own, proposals Republicans are debating as part of a package meant to replace or amend the Affordable Care Act.

Like Republicans give the first shit about Medicaid. And who gets to pay those taxes? Hmmm…I wonder.

HappyWarrior  Feb 16, 2017 • 9:06:18am

That said, he does have involvement with the NLRB Which I would hope would have him at least understanding of why labor thinks the way they do. My grandfather as I’ve told you guys was a NLRB lifer, he was literally there from the start until he went into private practice after Nixon got elected.

Yeah based on what I know so far about this guy, he seems legit. Hell, I would even consider him a decent choice for AG or a federal judgeship. He’s definitely conservative but he seems qualified, sane, and doesn’t seem to have tons of cois. I will do the 24 hour rule to find out more but Trump could have done a whole lot worse with this one.

Always good to get Ana’s perspective. I mean he obviously wouldn’t have been my choice for DOL but as I said he seems legit and I do appreciate anyone who does understand the NLRB. When my grandfather was there, he definitely had to break bread with people like Romney’s father George, the Reuther brothers, and others. He definitely had a sentiment towards workers since he saw himself as a supporter of the little guy but he made an effort to understand both sides of an argument and was widely respected for that. So yeah this is an improvement over Pudzer and I am glad that the pressure there worked.

Since detailed economics and balance sheets, et al, are not my forte, I read comments. This one caught my eye.

Rather than just the index values, I like to look at the Case-Shiller S&( [sic] 500 P/E ratio. Right now it is at about 28.5 compared to a historic average of 16. Too high and makes me uncomfortable.

My other index that I like, but I have not looked recently, is the monthly production of concrete, ply wood and corrugated cardboard. If people are building more and shipping more, those numbers will go up. The numbers have been at pretty steady high level for the last two years and indicate a solid base for the economy.

However, the P/E ratio suggests that until earnings increase we are in a risky bubble and there is little room for stock prices to advance. That worries me and should worry you.

Good advice there. You can really fall down a rabbit hole with economic/stock market stuff.

Simple things still work. P/E ratios…also, if bond yields go up (say…because the Chinese dump them en masse to say fck you, you orange shitgibbon), then bonds will be paying better than stocks, so people will sell stocks to buy bonds…and in so doing crash the stock market.

Simple things still work though. I’m still keeping my 60/40 stock/bond ratio in my 401k, its my main retirement asset, and while I may play around with other things, those are things I *play* with.

“Just doing his job”? Donny, he was discussing gov’t policy with a foreign gov’t without the authority or the power to do so. So if he was just “doing his job,” then who gave him that job?

One of Richard Spencer’s BFF is a white supremacist clown that is half-white but get this…half-Iranian too.

That’s even worse since there are many Iranians who claim they’re “true Aryans” and that “Arab invaders” diluted their blood somehow.

Is that the Roosh dude or someone else? Anyhow, I’m a European mutt. I don’t see how being of overwhelmingly immediate European ancestry makes me any better on any level than anyone. I’m proud of my cultures I’m descended from but that’s because damn it I like Irish whiskey, German beers, Slovakian comfort food, and Slovene nut rolls and yeah Irish music is cool too.

This Admin is not good at anything, even the people that supposedly should know:

He’s the Secretary of Defense, and he doesn’t know whether we’re considering additional troops (or any troops) to Syria? Who should know that one? The NSA? He got shitcanned for his Russia conversations. The President? He doesn’t know what anyone does unless Fox and Friends tells him in the 6am hour.

No one knows what they’re doing - no one knows anything about anything. No one can keep a story straight. Even one that’s relatively straight forward.

They’re all baffling with BS and it is blowing up in OUR faces.

Just because he was a good general wouldn’t make him a good defense secretary. Take Trump’s favorite warriors like Patton and MacArthur, you wouldn’t want them doing admin work. Guys like Marshall and Ike OTOH, you did. Trump just saw Mattis’s reputation as a popular general and fell in love with “Mad Dog” rather than actually seeing how he could handle the defense department as a whole.

He’s everything his wingnut fans say about our generation. An entitled brat who needs to be told he’s great.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of Baby Boomers that may not have been told they were great as part of their upbringing. They convinced themselves they were great based on their luck in making piles of cash. Trump is just one and most likely a glaring example. Look at some of the others he has surrounded himself with…say a guy like Andy Puzder. Mitt Romney is another. There are a lot of examples. Humble is not often used to describe successful boomers.

Trump wants to go back to the days when he was just entertainment to the press. He didn’t count on the idea that discrediting them would just make them angry.

Trump’s political memory is only a couple of hours long. What he might have said or done a few hours ago has no bearing on what he’s doing or saying right now. He doesn’t care about consistency or continuity.
