Senate GOP Changes Rules to Force Confirmation of Neil Gorsuch to Supreme Court

The stolen seat
Law • Views: 52,373

In today’s episode of The Ongoing Transformation of the US Government Into a Far Right Nightmare, Senate Republicans invoked the nuclear option and changed the rules so they could confirm the very conservative Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court today, as expected.

This is, of course, after they refused to even give President Obama’s centrist nominee, Merrick Garland, a hearing.

This basically cements the Supreme Court into a conservative majority for the foreseeable future. Yes, that’s very depressing news, and there’s no way to sugar coat it. This is exactly why the Republican Party lined up to support Trump even though many of them despised him: because they knew they could use him to push their regressive ideology into every aspect of the federal government.

The election of Donald Trump is doing lasting damage to the American ideals of civil liberty and progress.

So, does Gorsuch go down in history as the Justice with the smallest majority?

according to AP:

Gorsuch won support from 51 of the chambers’ Republicans as well as three moderate Democrats up for re-election in states Trump won last fall: Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Donnelly of Indiana.

I still prefer Democrats in those 3 seats, which we won’t have if we primary them. It’s a calculation - if something’s going to happen regardless, and you can still mount a protest vote, you let the vulnerable folks ‘show their independence’.

Yup.

Gorsuch will be pontificating from the Supreme Court for decades to come, alongside Roberts and Alito. Those three will be rolling back civil and voting rights, all while the so called originalists ignore that the only reason Gorsuch was seated is that the GOP ignored the constitution, ignored 200+ years of Senate history, comity, and thwarted the Garland nomination so completely that the balance of the court is forever marred.

Obama had the nomination that could shape the Court’s future, and push for equality and civil rights, but the GOP stood united and upended 2+ centuries of tradition, law, and the Constitution to block Garland.

It was a pure power play, and the GOP stole the seat. Period. Gorsuch will forever be known as holding the Stolen Seat.

And the extent to which most people rolled over for it is disheartening. It’s one of the great successes of the Right that they feel free to do whatever they want, because ‘in the same situation, it’s what the Dems would do!’, but oddly enough, it always seems to be them doing it.

Normally I wouldn’t mind this but Sanders is the kind of guy who will do this with Perez and then talk shit about the DNC when he wants to show off his “revolutionary” creds. That said, we do have to acknowledge that Sanders has support within the party. At the same time though, I wish Sanders would join the Dems or else just let us do our thing.

I’m sick of the right getting to push Alitos, Roberts, and now Gorsushs on us while we have moderate liberals like Kagan and Sotomayor who are fine people and judges being treated as if they’re extremists.

See that massive gas and registration increase? Jerry Brown says it’s for roads. Except we already had one of the highest gas taxes in the USA, but those revenues are not necessarily for roads and repair.

So at a moment when the pension crisis is draining money like an emergency release from a dam. Taking the monies ordinarily available for infrastructure, and causing a revenue shortage solved by only half.

Dr Lizardo  Apr 7, 2017 • 11:33:17am

Russian PM Medvedev posted this on his FB page - this is the English translation:

That’s it. The last remaining election fog has lifted. Instead of an overworked statement about a joint fight against the biggest enemy, ISIS (the Islamic State), the Trump administration proved that it will fiercely fight the legitimate Syrian government, in a tough contradiction with international law and without UN approval, in violation of its own procedures stipulating that the Congress must first be notified of any military operation unrelated to aggression against the US. On the verge of a military clash with Russia.
Nobody is overestimating the value of pre-election promises but there must be limits of decency.
Beyond that is absolute mistrust. Which is really sad for our now completely ruined relations. And which is good news for terrorists.
One more thing. This military action is a clear indication of the US President’s extreme dependency on the opinion of the Washington establishment, the one that the new president strongly criticised in his inauguration speech. Soon after his victory, I noted that everything would depend on how soon Trump’s election promises would be broken by the existing power machine. It took only two and a half months.

Squirrel finds a nut:

Yes, it’s true. There’s no overarching policy consistency or fact-based/reality-based assessment of conditions. Trump’s doing whatever flitters into the head at the moment, regardless of whatever positions he’s taken on the issue previously (and with his active twitter feed, there’s a tweet for pretty much every action he’s taken, will take, or should take going forward).

The reason that there’s no policy consistency is simple. There’s an expiration date for everything Trump says and does, because he doesn’t care about consequences of his actions - only what the current action gets for him. He lives in the now - doesn’t care about the future. It’s also how he’s able to lie to so many people and not get held accountable for any of it.*

*The media enables the lies by not calling them out as such, even when they’re on stuff everyone knows is a lie.

The US and Russia could be looking at the same battle damage and interpreting it according to different rubrics. Tomahawks aren’t really good for ruining runways, all they do is put a small crater on the surface. So the US says the Tomahawks hit their targets but all the Russians see is the ineffective results. That’s why we have the Durandal, but delivering those in Syria currently requires pitting a piloted fighter bomber against a modern Russian air defense system.

Nah. Jones isn’t that clever, this is his innate antisemitism straining at the shackles. I honestly didn’t think my “Court Jew” theory about how Jared’s involvement in the Administration would come to be viewed by Trump’s supporters would happen so quickly.

Once you start down the path of conspiracy logic, at some point you’re going to arrive at Jews, because many, even most, conspiracy tropes were initially about Jews. Which is why I’m not at all shocked that MRAs, GGs, et cetera have gelled into alt-righters.

Indeed, I pointed out one time that a lot of historical anti-communism was in fact based in antisemitism.

And hack McConnell claims the reason he’s okay with Trump doing it is because “he had a better plan.” Mitch has becoming more and more obvious about what a blatant partisan hack piece of shit he really is.

Hard to believe that his press conference in the Capitol about the GOP’s top priority of making Obama a one term president was not the peak partisan hackery.

Absolutely. Like an unimaginably foul beast returning to dine again on its own vomit, the right will return to its anti-semitic heritage. The only reason they long pretended (in public) to not be anti-semites was the defeat of the Nazi regime in WWII and the exposure of its crimes.

One of the things that’s stuck with me after reading it was antisemitism as part of the 1914 Russian advance. The soldiers starting stealing, looting, and raping in shtetls on the way to the front, and its was just considered not an issue by the command structure.

Politics can change drastically, but it can’t instantly wipe away deeper cultural trends.

re: #7 Blind Frog Belly White

I still prefer Democrats in those 3 seats, which we won’t have if we primary them. It’s a calculation - if something’s going to happen regardless, and you can still mount a protest vote, you let the vulnerable folks ‘show their independence’.

We often complain about purity of party. I think sometimes people forget about political strategy. Such as live to fight another day. IF the Dems give up states the three that voted for him, the Democrats may never get those seats back. And considering how things are going that is a very real chance.

In this case asking for party purity may bite us all in the butt. Those three votes when added to what hopefully will happen in 2018 could be very important. And as someone pointed out yesterday, there are more Democratic Senate seats up in 2018 than Republican (I hope I have that right). Should things not turn out as we hope, losing more and more Senate seats could be real real bad.

In 2014, the National Park System received over 292 million recreation visits. NPS visitors spent $15.7 billion in local gateway regions (defined as communities within 60 miles of a park). The contribution of this spending to the national economy was 277 thousand jobs, $10.3 billion in labor income, $17.1 billion in value added, and $29.7 billion in output. The lodging sector saw the highest direct contributions with 48 thousand jobs and $4.8 billion in output directly contributed to local gateway economies nationally. The sector with the next greatest direct contributions was restaurants and bars, with 60 thousand jobs and $3.2 billion in output directly contributed to local gateway economies nationally

Indeed, antisemitism was a main part of right wing ideology leading up to WWII not just in Europe but in the U.S. too. The right loves to attack FDR now for his mistake not letting in Jewish refugees but the right at the time hated FDR for having tons of Jewish advisers and being hostile towards that Hitler guy.

During World War II, trying to sort out the rival claims of Goebbels and Stalin about events on the eastern front became a specialized field of intelligence, or perhaps divination, among the Soviets’ erstwhile allies in the west. The same was true of the Spanish Civil War, where neither side’s official claims were worth the paper they were printed on.

It’s easy for us to identify that 59 missiles were launched, and that they all hit in their circular error of probability. In other words, they functioned as designed. They hit the target.

Destroying said target is a separate question.

The Russians/Syrians can say that half the targets were damaged, and they too could be right.

That the airfield is already back in business shows that the damage was insufficient to stop a single base, and barely caused a blip on Assad’s radar. Trump thought a single salvo of missiles would show something - resolve, that he’s not a pussy, etc. Reality is that the raid’s results are showing that he lacks focus, is easily goaded, and doesn’t get any of this presidential stuff.

As Maggie and Glenn described it in their blockbuster articleearlier romance novel:

In the midafternoon, a beaming Mr. Trump climbed into the rig of a black tractor-trailer, which had been driven to the White House for an event with trucking industry executives, honking the horn and posing for a series of tough-guy photos — one with his fists held aloft, another staring straight ahead, hands gripping the large wheel, his face compressed into an excited scream.

I feel sick. It’s Friday. Afternoon is here.

(to liver: “Incoming!!!” )

This is not the first time that Russian talking points, as readily repeated by websites like InfoWars, aimed to push blame for an atrocity in Syria away from Assad, or questioned whether anyone was truly killed in a bombing. In December, RT anchors and Russian government-backed viral news sites used the burgeoning buzzword “fake news” to describe the shelling of Aleppo.

Foreign Policy Research Institute fellow Clint Watts, who testified in front of the Senate about Russia’s disinformation campaign last week, told The Daily Beast at the time that this is a long-held Russian strategy to deflect blame through propaganda, and cause even viewers of disturbing footage taken from the attacks to question an objective reality.

“It’s not just an information war on America—it’s a war on information itself,” Watts said. “The point of it is that you can’t trust anything. Then there’s no baseline. You can say and do whatever you want, and then deny it ever happened.”

One of those refugees we shouldn’t have let in:

Whatever the reason, Powell deserted on January 1, 1865.[31] He made his way to Richmond, where he sold his horse and purchased a ticket on a train headed for Alexandria, Virginia.[32] On January 13, he entered the Union Army’s lines at Alexandria, claimed to be a civilian refugee,[32] and—under the name “Lewis Payne” (or “Paine”, sources vary)—took an oath of allegiance to the United States.

So suddenly, I’m in negotiations to pick up one of these…

A Peavey Wiggy amp with matching cabinet. Designed by Dweezil Zappa.

I’m offering up a Godin Redline 2 guitar that I’ve got but I don’t like in a straight up trade. I probably wouldn’t use it live very much, but it’s in absolutely mint condition. I’d probably just grab it and store it away as a showroom-condition example of a celebrity-designed oddity. If the deal goes down, it goes down tomorrow.

Pretty much everybody who sees the old girl says the same thing. She was kept covered under a tarp under some trees, so that helped a lot. I was more surprised at the interior, that it hadn’t been completely destroyed and defecated upon by rodents over the years.

In other news where we are not getting fucked or shanked or why don’t I just go back to sleep, I fired off an email to my rep about the loss of privacy on the internet and got this scrabble game back. I never had what I just lost. Silly me…..

Dear Mr. Gullible Twit:

Thank you for contacting me regarding your opposition to S.J. Res. 34 and the repeal of the Broadband Internet Service Providers (ISP) rule. I appreciate hearing your views on this important issue.

S.J. Res. 34 was introduced by U.S. Senator Jeff Flake (R-AZ) on March 7, 2017, as a disapproval resolution under the Congressional Review Act (CRA), Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) introduced the companion legislation, H.J. Res. 86, on March 8, 2017. The CRA empowers Congress to review and overturn federal regulations from a previous Administration within 60 days of the rule’s implementation.

Specifically, this resolution disapproves of a proposed Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule that would give regulatory powers to the FCC which rest outside of its jurisdiction. The use and disclosure of the contents of electronic communications are not governed by the FCC under the Federal Communications Act. Additionally, the proposed rule would have permitted ISP’s to be regulated differently than other individual websites that already collect information on its users such as Google and Facebook.

Under the existing consumer protection regime, both internet service providers and websites are already regulated by the Federal Trade Commission. This current enforcement-based approach to privacy regulation has protected privacy without stifling innovation. Allowing the FCC to regulate ISPs differently than other web services would create a disjointed and incongruent set of regulations for consumers. Because the proposed rule never went into effect, its nullification does not change or lessen existing consumer privacy regulations.

On February 23, 2017 the Senate passed this legislation, by a vote of 50 to 48. On March 28 , 2017, this measure passed in the House by a vote of 215-205. The President signed it into law on April 3, 2017.

Please continue to contact me on matters of importance to you. If you would like to learn more about my work in the Congress, please sign up for my eNewsletter. Additionally, you can follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is an honor to represent you in the House of Representatives.

Worth noting that US tactical nuclear weapons were continuously deployed in South Korea until 1991. They were removed by President George HW Bush as part of his Presidential Nuclear Initiative. Weapons deployed included 8 inch howitzer rounds, and warheads for Honest John rockets and, later, Lance and Nike Hercules missiles, as well as free fall bombs for US aircraft in the theater. US nukes are of course deployed close by, certainly on Guam and probably elsewhere as well.

Honestly the next Democratic President needs to find the most lefty and qualified candidate for the position. I’m sick of the right getting to push Alitos, Roberts, and now Gorsushs on us while we have moderate liberals like Kagan and Sotomayor who are fine people and judges being treated as if they’re extremists.

we will, trust me. now that the filibuster is nuked, Democrats with a senate majority will happily find the most left-leaning socialist in the judiciary. Granted, the judiciary probably skews pretty center-right, just because the law tends to be pretty conservative by nature, but Republicans are going to rue the day that they turned their noses up at Garland.

Retaliation in kind for a North Korean nuclear attack would almost certainly come from nearby tactical nukes, probably ship-launched Tomahawks, with followup by B-52s, B-2s, and tactical aircraft forward deployed on Guam. A Minuteman or Trident launch toward North Korea would seriously alarm the Russians and Chinese, since it would appear to be heading for the Russian Far East and northeastern China until quite late in its trajectory.

After St. Petersburg bombing, a notable absence: Russian anti-Islam backlash

Analysts say that Russia’s mainly white Christian population is no less susceptible to the fears and hatreds that are roiling Western societies. But they are held in check by a host of factors: a political culture that forcibly marginalizes extremisms of all kinds and limits their access to the media; a long history of war, conquest, and assimilation of Muslim neighbors into Russian-run states; a federal structure that includes several mainly Muslim republics; and a rising Russian Orthodox Church that has been very careful to retain good formal relations with Russia’s three other official founding religions: Islam, Buddhism, and Judaism.

I wonder if Alex Jones and his gang believe they could ride out a nuclear war in their bunker in the hills above Austin, then emerge, round up some surviving disciples, and “take over?” I know this is a pretty common fantasy among the politically whacky fringe of the prepper culture. The religious fringe, with which this overlaps quite a bit, wants an apocalypse for rather different reasons.
Out here in the sticks, quite a few of the prepper types are hamstrung by their own racism and misperceptions, and this affects their planning. They are absolutely convinced that nuclear war will bring hordes of “others” out from the inner cities to loot and pillage. In truth, nobody will be coming out of central Dallas or Fort Worth for a very long time after a nuclear strike.

When was the yam photo taken (I thought he was eating dinner at Mar-a-Gaudy when it all went down)

Indeed, it was taken at Mar-a-Lago, probably in one of the parcheesi/UNO tournament rooms.

Why is Prince Jared (cropped in this photo, but in others) looking in the opposite direction of the action?

He just met with some big wigs in the Middle East, maybe he’s trying to hide his face for fear of his life?

Killam confirmed, as fellow SNL cast member Pete Davidson has stated previously, that Trump “struggled to read” at his episode’s table read and didn’t seem to get the jokes. Much like the White House, Trump didn’t seem to be happy to be there either, and operated “powered by bluster.”

From this moment forward I’ll think of Trump as “President Bluster”.
