Considering the way the wingnuts are freaking out about Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue, is this a pretty good indication that they — and hopefully legislators — are hearing pushback about not passing Trumpcare? And if so, does this mean we should maybe be calling representatives who’d previously said they wanted to pass it, to see if even they are considering switching back to a No vote?

…the firmly established narrative of Clinton and Trump is that she couldn’t connect to rural voters, whereas he was a “blue-collar billionaire” who made surprising emotional connections. Trump may be the first president whose plunge to 40 percent approval was marked by stories about the voters who still loved him. And Clinton may be the only politician who can talk about the need for rural broadband — at this point, an almost banal priority of rural politicians — and be accused of snobbery.

Kimmel made a good point. The USA is still the world’s leading economic and political power; it’s criminal that its citizens have to worry they might not have enough money to save a loved one from dying in hospital. The ACA, as flawed as it is, opened people’s eyes to the benefits of guaranteed health coverage — less worry, less costs, more security, a better future. Taking it away now would be akin to taking away Social Security — a politically unwise (and impossible) move.

The ACA, as flawed as it is, opened people’s eyes to the benefits of guaranteed health coverage — less worry, less costs, more security, a better future. Taking it away now would be akin to taking away Social Security — a politically unwise (and impossible) move.

Too many Republicans do not as yet believe that and may still destroy the ACA. We need to keep pressure on them and force them to reach that conclusion. None of the great social programs that went into effect over the past century was passed by Republican legislators, except for the Medicare Part D, and that was an addition to the existing Medicare program. Republicans are not in favor of implementing programs whose main beneficiaries are the poor and lower middle class.

Don’t know if you saw this but the police officer who shot a man in the back and tried to cover it up just pleaded guilty in the federal civil rights case. Make sure you read the quote from his lawyer. (Made me want to punch him in the face.)

It was a sweet plea deal for him. They drop 2 other charges and he doesn’t have to be retried by the state for murder, since the last time it ended in a mistrial. While the max sentence is life plus fines, there is no minimum. How much do you want to bet he gets off with a wrist slapping?

Affordable rural broadband is a real problem (as I have noted). In my village board meeting tonight, it was announced that a couple contracting companies that provide other services have dropped us, because we are too isolated and they can’t make money.

No corporation is going to extend broadband services here. It figures the press would spin Hillary Clinton’s (and my) concerns about this into “elitism” and “she can’t connect with rural voters.” Gaaa.

In the town in which I live, the only service is ADSL via Century Link landline service. The only places in town with Internet service are the village clerk’s office (paid for by the village government), and my house. Internet service costs 5% of my total disability income. For others in my village, it is simply too expensive. Satellite service is less reliable and more expensive. A few wealthy ranchers out in the county use it, but mostly there is no Internet service outside of the major cities (Scottsbluff, Alliance, Kimball).

When I was a teacher in the States, our school had a tough time getting affordable health insurance plans, because it was small — 25 employees tops. Only Humana even bothered to bid. When the school joined a consortium of other local private schools, the insurers got only slightly more interested, because the pool was still very small — maybe 200 potential clients.

Telecom companies have the same business model. Though they are essentially providing a public service, their main mission is to make as much money with as little expense as possible. The ACA forced the insurance companies to offer plans to everyone, even people working in small businesses. It would take a similar law to force telecoms to provide broadband service to underserved communities. (Perhaps a better analogy would be the TVA, though.)

Getting landline service is more difficult in rural areas, but just about every small town has an Internet cafe (网吧 - wangba “net bar”) so anyone with a little cash can surf to his or her heart’s content.

Some cities now have 5G mobile service rolling out. And wifi is now very common in cafes and restaurants.

But the thing is that the GOP will not incur any of the consequences from this multiyear effort to sabotage Obamacare.

In fact, that Obamacare is working despite years of sabotage by the GOP is a testament to how well it is, in fact, working.

So I got a surprise in my emails just now. A message from Speaker of the House Paul D. Ryan. I can’t remember how long it has been since I wrote him. I paged it here, so I can look back for the date. I think maybe early February. And my email to him was my concerns about Trump and the need for the Republicans to do what is needed to keep him in line or dump him. Also about how Congress is listening and catering to wingnuts and not concerned Americans worried about things like healthcare.

So here is what he wrote back:

I assume that nothing will come of these hearings or media reports or anything like that.

Comey makes no sense.

He said he disagreed with the characterization or term chastise as stated by Senator Hirono describing his 15 minute press conference to admonish Clinton before the election…

Then he, to support his actions, described previous actions by the FBI to “chastise” (his words) Lois Lerner, and therefore it is not unusual.

“It happens, its very unusual, but it happens.” As if his actions are out of his control.

He claims to not have given any thought to the impact or affect he might have on a political campaign. So he was as transparent as possible.

Earlier, Hirono said, since Comey had already acknowledged the ongoing Trump investigation, could he comment on its nature.

Comey: “No.”

One investigation gets press conferences and chastises the people involved, the other doesn’t even get more then an acknowledgement.

Nothing about the relationships between the parties has changed. The cast of characters hasn’t changed either. They’re all comfortable with the status quo, because no one is being challenged and their power bases have consolidated.

The entire conflict has dropped off the map because of IS, which is a greater threat to the Middle East than Israel ever was. Heck, there’s not as much bitching about Iran these days (thanks to the Iran nuclear deal, but even Israel has to admit that it’s helped).

Question for you about audio versus reading.

Do you find you retain more of the story and details from reading or from the audio being read to you?

There has been some discussion about learning regarding books or video (TV) and audio is part of that debate.

Some educators think by reading there is a more permanent storage of the info in the brain due to the work it takes the brain to make words into pictures and thoughts.

They believe when the info comes to you from audio and images it is too easy and the brain doesn’t process it in a way that makes you work to retain. They say that is why you can watch something on TV and a few minutes later have a hard time explaining in detail what you saw.

I’ve even seen people discuss the difference between real life images and pictures in a book or even more so on TV. The thinking there is the printed half-tone dots and the small pixels of video do not implant the same way as seeing it for real. The image is broken up and that is not hat mom nature intended.

I’ve always found all that interesting.

Not fake news, but non-news. These tests are routine, with several a year since the Minuteman I entered service in the early 60s. There were 5 in 2015. Minuteman III launch history.
The article is in error in stating that the Minuteman III has been in service “for 60 years.”
First launch was August 16, 1968, with operational deployment from April, 1970.

It is not part of some kind of nefarious posturing related to the current tension, as the quoted peace activists allege, since the launch has been planned and publicly announced for 10 months.

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in San Barbara, has criticized the timing and the Air Force’s motives for both launches. The organization has said the launches come amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

There has been some discussion about learning regarding books or video (TV) and audio is part of that debate.

Some educators think by reading there is a more permanent storage of the info in the brain due to the work it takes the brain to make words into pictures and thoughts.

They believe when the info comes to you from audio and images it is too easy and the brain doesn’t process it in a way that makes you work to retain. They say that is why you can watch something on TV and a few minutes later have a hard time explaining in detail what you saw.

I’ve even seen people discuss the difference between real life images and pictures in a book or even more so on TV. The thinking there is the printed half-tone dots and the small pixels of video do not implant the same way as seeing it for real. The image is broken up and that is not hat mom nature intended.

I’ve always found all that interesting.

According to Marshall McLuhan (“The Medium Is The Message”), TV images imprint more deeply than print. Because they’re not broadcasting a whole picture, they’re broadcasting bunches of pixels and your brain has to do the work of turning it into a picture.

Also… TV is for “lots of stuff happening at once” split-attention holistic processing, while radio only works for “one thing at a time” linear processing. That’s why baseball is a radio game and football is a TV game.

The testing I underwent in the big city was all about cognition, greatly about memory. They found that my visual memory was working pretty well, but that my audio memory was not where they would have expected it to be, pre-brain-injury. I could read a list of words and remember quite well, but when I listened to a list of words, I got lost before she’d get to the fifth one. Little drawings I did OK on.

This may be why I can post here, but other things are giving me more difficulty. Maybe we’re all visual thinkers here. But these things are subject to change.

I really get creeped out by anything that shows injury or damage to fingers. I find it easier to watch whole limbs severed than to see someone lose a finger.

I think it has to do with an image I saw on TV as a kid, there was a PBS broadcast on surrealism (it was late at night, past my normal bedtime) and there was an image depicting a smiling woman who had just bitten off all her fingers.

That really disturbed me back then and I think it has stayed with me ever since

My first audio book was a reading of Emily Dickenson’s poems, I had to listen to parts of it like 6 times before I could get thru an entire poem (most of hers were short). It really helped me.

Long and short is that Nate and Sam Wang each think that the Comey effect was 1-2 points by election day, and as much as 4 points in the runup to the election.

In other words, they think it was statistically significant enough to throw the election.

Yes, I absolutely get that! In school, I would take notes that I never reviewed. It was the actual act of writing it down that put it in my memory. The same with spelling. I do medical transcription and learned all the terminology on my own. I only have to look something up once and that’s it. I think that’s why I was always so good at spelling…actually seeing the words in print.

Most of what’s done now is to save old buildings in an historically accurate manner. It’s all finished with stucco. Lots of stuff is made to represent the old things.

If a business is too big to fail, it deserves the Standard Oil treatment. As far as industries go, if there’s some sort of systematic failure within an industry that makes up a large part of our economy (say, banking) - or is tied to many parts of our economy (say, trucking) - we’re fucked. The point of regulation is to, at the very least, minimize the effects of the potential disaster (there’s not much we can do, for example, if diesel fuel supplies drop or a bad batch of rubber gets used for tires and completely screws up trucking for a month).

This is something that actually wouldn’t be a bad idea for people working in construction. You might have a stretch where you’re working 50-60 hours a week and then a month later you’re looking at 30 hours a week. But there definitely need to be some safeguards put in place to make it feasible (I say this as someone who has done wage and hour litigation in the past).

Things that I’d include, just off the top of my head: the election of comp time would have to be in writing and could be changed at anytime; an employee could not be terminated for refusing to do comp time; if an employee quits or is terminated, all comp time must be paid on the final paycheck (like vacation time)

After his dinner, I let him out to use the bathroom, and while he was out, he was attacked by two other dogs while he was in our own yard. I didn’t see him there, but as I turned into my driveway, I saw him laying on the left side of it. I’m trying to keep my mind occupied today, and I’m failing miserably. I lost my precious four-legged mixed Chihuahua last night. After his dinner, I let him out to use the bathroom, and while he was out, he was attacked by two other dogs while he was in our own yard. I called for him, and when he didn’t show up, I got into my car to see if he’d gone to a neighbor’s house. I didn’t see him there, but as I turned into my driveway, I saw him laying on the left side of it. When I checked him, he was still alive, so I put him on the backseat and went in search of an emergency animal hospital. None were open. I lost my baby, and I am inconsolable. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, and I can do nothing except think of how he should be here with me. Sorry to hear about your loss. It seems like euthanizing all the wild dogs should be the priority, though emergency vets are good to have too. Where I live, any animal out without a collar, or dog off a leash, is likely to be picked up by animal control
