Considering the way the wingnuts are freaking out about Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue, is this a pretty good indication that they — and hopefully legislators — are hearing pushback about not passing Trumpcare? And if so, does this mean we should maybe be calling representatives who’d previously said they wanted to pass it, to see if even they are considering switching back to a No vote?

YES! When these Republicans start fearing for their jobs, they just might change their minds.

Dave Weigel has a righteous take about media criticism of Hillary Clinton.

…the firmly established narrative of Clinton and Trump is that she couldn’t connect to rural voters, whereas he was a “blue-collar billionaire” who made surprising emotional connections. Trump may be the first president whose plunge to 40 percent approval was marked by stories about the voters who still loved him. And Clinton may be the only politician who can talk about the need for rural broadband — at this point, an almost banal priority of rural politicians — and be accused of snobbery.

Kimmel made a good point. The USA is still the world’s leading economic and political power; it’s criminal that its citizens have to worry they might not have enough money to save a loved one from dying in hospital. The ACA, as flawed as it is, opened people’s eyes to the benefits of guaranteed health coverage — less worry, less costs, more security, a better future. Taking it away now would be akin to taking away Social Security — a politically unwise (and impossible) move.

Too many Republicans do not as yet believe that and may still destroy the ACA. We need to keep pressure on them and force them to reach that conclusion. None of the great social programs that went into effect over the past century was passed by Republican legislators, except for the Medicare Part D, and that was an addition to the existing Medicare program. Republicans are not in favor of implementing programs whose main beneficiaries are the poor and lower middle class.

Don’t know if you saw this but the police officer who shot a man in the back and tried to cover it up just pleaded guilty in the federal civil rights case. Make sure you read the quote from his lawyer. (Made me want to punch him in the face.)

It was a sweet plea deal for him. They drop 2 other charges and he doesn’t have to be retried by the state for murder, since the last time it ended in a mistrial. While the max sentence is life plus fines, there is no minimum. How much do you want to bet he gets off with a wrist slapping?

In the town in which I live, the only service is ADSL via Century Link landline service. The only places in town with Internet service are the village clerk’s office (paid for by the village government), and my house. Internet service costs 5% of my total disability income. For others in my village, it is simply too expensive. Satellite service is less reliable and more expensive. A few wealthy ranchers out in the county use it, but mostly there is no Internet service outside of the major cities (Scottsbluff, Alliance, Kimball).

Just clinging to their guns, Bibles and phone modems…

When I was a teacher in the States, our school had a tough time getting affordable health insurance plans, because it was small — 25 employees tops. Only Humana even bothered to bid. When the school joined a consortium of other local private schools, the insurers got only slightly more interested, because the pool was still very small — maybe 200 potential clients.

Telecom companies have the same business model. Though they are essentially providing a public service, their main mission is to make as much money with as little expense as possible. The ACA forced the insurance companies to offer plans to everyone, even people working in small businesses. It would take a similar law to force telecoms to provide broadband service to underserved communities. (Perhaps a better analogy would be the TVA, though.)

Though China heavily censors and monitors its Internet services, anyone with a cellphone plan can access the ‘Net with at least 3G service. Getting landline service is more difficult in rural areas, but just about every small town has an Internet cafe (网吧 - wangba “net bar”) so anyone with a little cash can surf to his or her heart’s content.

Some cities now have 5G mobile service rolling out. And wifi is now very common in cafes and restaurants.

When the Fundamentalist Right recovered from being burned by Ronald Reagan, who used them to get elected and then cast them aside as soon as Nancy’s personal astrologer told them it was time to do so, they started insinuating their people into all levels of public life, including politics, the military and public administration.

Even when I was a Republican, I knew this guy was a toolbag:

Bryce Reeves, one of three Republican candidates for lieutenant governor, has released a TV ad that depicts two cowled and head-scarved “terrorists” who frighten a suburban mother and her two children.

The ad, titled “Safety,” portrays terrorists, wearing camouflage jackets and carrying black bags, dashing to a vehicle as the mother — in a driveway across the street — drops a bag of groceries and then comforts the children.

“This is the America Obama left behind,” Reeves, a state senator from Spotsylvania, says in a voice-over.

“Terrorists living here. FBI investigating ISIS nationwide. Frightening families.”

richmond.com

This guy is running for Lieutenant Governor. What was does the Lieutenant Governor do? Runs day-to-day operations of the State Senate when in session, cast tie-breaking votes, replaces the Governor if he dies.

What the fucking fuck does that have to do with ISIS?

And, for a change of pace, check out the story’s comments. As if right now, they’re actually pretty good.

When the Fundamentalist Right recovered from being burned by Ronald Reagan, who used them to get elected and then cast them aside as soon as Nancy’s personal astrologer told them it was time to do so, they started insinuating their people into all levels of public life, including politics, the military and public administration.

School boards were a key target, as they shape the course of education and indoctrination.

They now have two major advocates in power, one as Secretary of Education and the other as Vice President.

Actually they started to pack the school boards right after Roe v. Wade. I remember how the Catholic churches back home went insane the Sunday after that decision was released. In our 1973 School Board election back home, several Catholic priests and a Southern Baptist preacher ran for school board seats to put Jay-Zuss back in the school and one of the priests got elected. The GOP can’t address substantive criticism of their #GOPDontCare about health plan (aka Trumpcare/Ryancare v. whatever).

There’s absolutely no math that makes any of this work. Every GOP plan comes down to millions fewer covered, higher costs for everyone but the rich, and tax cuts for the rich.

That’s every single iteration. And they wonder why it’s a “pipe dream”? There’s no wonder.

It’s basic fucking math.

If you seek to toss 20 million people from health coverage, you will incur the wrath of the American people.

If you seek to raise premiums for everyone with insurance (not just those via Obamacare) by 20% or more, you will incur the wrath of the American people.

If you seek to eliminate preexisting condition protections, you’ll again incur the wrath of the American people.

The GOP simply thinks that lying about their goals and intentions will be enough of a flim flam to get their bill out of the House, convince enough GOPers in the Senate so as to get to the president’s desk where Trump will sign anything he’s asked to without knowing what the fuck it is.

As it is, Ryan was caught lying about what his plan would do regarding preexisting conditions, and it’s the ss/dd from the GOP again today.

But the thing is that the GOP will not incur any of the consequences from this multiyear effort to sabotage Obamacare.

In fact, that Obamacare is working despite years of sabotage by the GOP is a testament to how well it is, in fact, working.

Considering that there’s millions on millions of people with preexisting conditions, this is absolutely laughable and a huge step down from the current coverage and protections for preexisting conditions.

Not good…

Nine Republican US senators yesterday submitted legislation that would prohibit the Federal Communications Commission from ever again using the regulatory authority that allowed the commission to impose net neutrality rules. The “Restoring Internet Freedom Act” would prohibit the FCC from classifying ISPs as common carriers under Title II of the Communications Act and “from imposing certain regulations on providers of such service.”

Throttling of websites and online services might help customers, FCC says
The Internet “is threatened by the Federal Communications Commission’s 2015 Open Internet Order, which would put federal bureaucrats in charge of engineering the Internet’s infrastructure,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah). said in an announcement yesterday. “That is why I am introducing the Restoring Internet Freedom Act, which would nullify [the] Open Internet Order and prohibit the FCC from issuing a similar rule in the future.”

Lee’s bill was co-sponsored by Sens. John Cornyn (R-Texas), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), and James Inhofe (R-Ok.). In the announcement, Cruz repeated his charge that net neutrality is “Obamacare for the Internet.”

In other words, net neturality is a good thing, and we must stand opposed to it, because we must.

Anything Obama stood for, the GOP must oppose, regardless of the consequences.

The GOP doesn’t stand for anything beyond personal gain and enriching those who are already rich, all while shifting the burdens to those who can’t afford them (I really need to set up a macro for that).

This is the GOP math I’m talking about. They simply don’t care.

But there are some other considerations.

Generally speaking, 5% of the population accounts for 50% of health care spending annually. The other 95% of the population makes up the remaining 50%.

What is that 5% of the population spending on/for? Well, there’s stuff like cancer, organ failure/transplants, catastrophic accidents/injuries, and often end of life care.

But that’s also separate from the fact that around 8-10% of the population has what would be considered a preexisting condition of some form or another. Anything from heart conditions, diabetes, to genetic conditions, or accidents/injuries (such as those that Chaffetz went in for surgery to address this week).

The GOP plans would essentially fuck all these people.

We’re talking about millions of people here. And the GOP simply doesn’t care about any of them. Not their voters. Not their constituents. Not any American other than those who would get tax cuts resulting from their actions.

re: #111 Barefoot Grin

Indeed. GOP spent 8 years screeching that Obamacare is evil and the worst form of government indentured servitude that must be destroyed at all costs.

The GOP lied at every step of the way, and their supporters bought it.

Now, this is the price. The GOP base demands it be destroyed, not knowing that it’s essential to their own health coverage and well being. The GOP can’t face this indisputable fact that they’ve lied for years and now have to carry through on the lie.

A few are starting to admit that this was all a sham - that there was never any intention of repealing Obamacare, but the GOP is still doing it by any means at their disposal - which especially includes flat out lying about what they’re doing.

None of this means Obamacare is perfect. It isn’t. But it’s worlds better than what preceded it, and millions of people have coverage that didn’t have it before - reducing uninsured rates to historic lows, reduced medically induced bankruptcies, and reduced indigent care costs nationwide.

I think maybe early February. And my email to him was my concerns about Trump and the need for the Republicans to do what is needed to keep him in line or dump him. Also about how Congress is listening and catering to wingnuts and not concerned Americans worried about things like healthcare.

So here is what he wrote back:

Thank you for contacting me, The first responsibility of the federal government is to keep the American people safe. That is why we are working every day to secure our borders, rebuild our military, and defeat the threat of radical Islamist terrorism.

Visit speaker.gov for additional updates on this issue. Thank you again for writing.

The GOP set two high bars almost immediately after the stories about Russiagate began hitting the news: Evidence of active collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign and evidence that Russian hackers had succeeded in changing vote totals. The argument being if both bars are not met, then there’s no scandal at all. They added a third bar later: If evidence showed that members of the Trump campaign were actively colluding with the Russians, then further evidence was necessary to show that Trump knew about the collusion.

It’s basically a rerun of Iran-Contra, that so long as they can claim that the guy at the top had no idea all this was going on, there’s no real scandal except a bunch of bad actors who were doing things he was totally unaware of.

I assume that nothing will come of these hearings or media reports or anything like that.

The real rub will be when something larger is at stake, some Russian act, some aggressive action, some foreign policy crisis, when the conflict engendered by their collusion causes a major fracture in the geo-political system.

He cannot be wrong except for that fact the Drump said Andrew Jackson was
“angry” about a war that didn’t happen until 16 years after his death.

He was not talking about the historical Jackson, he was talking about his own personal mythical Jackson.

If you’re listening… isn’t Comey admitting, right now, that he “Concealed” the Russian investigation by saying he had to speak out on the new revelations of finding new Hillary related emails?

“It makes (Comey) sick to think he may have had an impact on the election…”

And I love the argument that he shouldn’t think of the greater ramifications of his actions as FBI chief, as that would hurt the FBI as an independent institution.

Because… knowing the bigger picture always clouds one’s judgment?

I can’t follow this.

To me, this is saying: “I’m not responsible for the ramifications of my actions, because I refused to even look at the possible impacts of my work.”

Comey is the most powerful person in Government right now. Not since J Edgar Hoover have we had such a politically influential FBI. And he carries himself like he knows it.

Leahy with a great question on how both investigations were treated… But jesus, the old guy sounds like he’s on his last leg.

Leahy pointed out that Its not about the fact that they were mostly quiet about both investigations, like Comey is asserting (to defend the FBIs “equal treatment” of both investigations), it’s about the timing of the last revelation before the election that is in question…

Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said it had been “heartbreaking” to see people “hurting themselves and others” in videos streamed live on Facebook.

The move follows cases of murder and suicide being broadcast live on the social network.

If ever there were a sign that the world is upside down, it is that a Muslim prince from an Arab royal family is now one of the leading voices defending human rights on the global stage. At a time when the issue seems to be taking a back seat everywhere, Prince Zeid Raad al-Hussein of Jordan, the U.N. high commissioner for human rights, has excoriated Western politicians for their xenophobia and requested an investigation into allegations of torture in Bahrain — even as the United States announced it is lifting human rights restrictions on arm sales to the kingdom.

Before the U.S. election, Zeid stood in front of the U.N. General Assembly in September and decried “race-baiting bigots who seek to gain, or retain, power by wielding prejudice and deceit at the expense of those most vulnerable.”

The Brainwashing of My Father

The Brainwashing of My Father—Sunday, May 7, 6:00 pm, Center for Inquiry, 350 Canal Walk, Suite A, Indianapolis. Film screening arranged by Matt Barron.
As filmmaker, Jen Senko, tries to understand the transformation of her father from a non political, life-long Democrat to an angry, Right-Wing fanatic, she uncovers the forces behind the media that changed him completely: a plan by Roger Ailes under Nixon for a media takeover by the GOP, The Powell Memo urging business leaders to influence institutions of public opinion, especially the universities, the media and the courts, and under Reagan, the dismantling of the Fairness Doctrine.

Comey makes no sense.

He said he disagreed with the characterization or term chastise as stated by Senator Hirono describing his 15 minute press conference to admonish Clinton before the election…

Then he, to support his actions, described previous actions by the FBI to “chastise” (his words) Lois Lerner, and therefore it is not unusual.

He claims to not have given any thought to the impact or affect he might have on a political campaign. So he was as transparent as possible.

Earlier, Hirono said, since Comey had already acknowledged the ongoing Trump investigation, could he comment on its nature.

Comey: “No.”

One investigation gets press conferences and chastises the people involved, the other doesn’t even get more then an acknowledgement.

Hmmm. It is kind of like the people that see Trump and thought he was a President. He too is just an asshole and he keeps stinging us.

My yellow jacket story is about out fishing with a friend on a local lake. Who expects yellow jackets in the middle of a lake?

A tree branch floating in the water came up and hit the side of the boat and got hung in the anchor line. I reached over the side to push it away and as I grabbed the anchor line I got stung three or four times in the palm of my hand.

There were several jackets on the tree branch and they were climbing onto the anchor rope.

Mine was casually putting my hand on top of a tennis-net post. They came out of the hole on the side where the wire goes through. Only a couple of stings, but I said some words that would get one kicked out of Wimbledon.

Trump thinks that Abbas and Netanyahu are going to do something that they’ve been unable and unwilling to do for the past decade? Hamas is going to change its stripes to spots?

Nothing about the relationships between the parties has changed. The cast of characters hasn’t changed either. They’re all comfortable with the status quo, because no one is being challenged and their power bases have consolidated.

The entire conflict has dropped off the map because of IS, which is a greater threat to the Middle East than Israel ever was. Heck, there’s not as much bitching about Iran these days (thanks to the Iran nuclear deal, but even Israel has to admit that it’s helped).

IS poses a greater threat to destabilizing regimes in the ME than Israel, and Assad’s managed to stick around through Russian and Iranian support and killing 2% of the population (over 400,000 dead).

Question for you about audio versus reading.

Do you find you retain more of the story and details from reading or from the audio being read to you?

There has been some discussion about learning regarding books or video (TV) and audio is part of that debate.

Some educators think by reading there is a more permanent storage of the info in the brain due to the work it takes the brain to make words into pictures and thoughts.

They believe when the info comes to you from audio and images it is too easy and the brain doesn’t process it in a way that makes you work to retain. They say that is why you can watch something on TV and a few minutes later have a hard time explaining in detail what you saw.

I’ve even seen people discuss the difference between real life images and pictures in a book or even more so on TV. The thinking there is the printed half-tone dots and the small pixels of video do not implant the same way as seeing it for real. The image is broken up and that is not hat mom nature intended.

I’ve always found all that interesting.

Not fake news, but non-news. These tests are routine, with several a year since the Minuteman I entered service in the early 60s. There were 5 in 2015. Minuteman III launch history.
The article is in error in stating that the Minuteman III has been in service “for 60 years.”
First launch was August 16, 1968, with operational deployment from April, 1970.

It is not part of some kind of nefarious posturing related to the current tension, as the quoted peace activists allege, since the launch has been planned and publicly announced for 10 months.

The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization based in San Barbara, has criticized the timing and the Air Force’s motives for both launches. The organization has said the launches come amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

hmmm …

Audible (before that audio books-cassettes- from the Library) has certainly bettered my ability to listen and hear.

I retain more if the the words used in the book are foreign to me. Books written before 1900, translations, non-fiction with a science bent —I often can’t properly pronounce words from such books. I get much more out of such books when they are properly narrated.

I never would have finished War & Peace in book form.

Our brains are set-up for storytelling. So, yes, I probably remember the audio version more —at least in Fiction.

According to Marshall McLuhan (“The Medium Is The Message”), TV images imprint more deeply than print. Because they’re not broadcasting a whole picture, they’re broadcasting bunches of pixels and your brain has to do the work of turning it into a picture.

Also… TV is for “lots of stuff happening at once” split-attention holistic processing, while radio only works for “one thing at a time” linear processing. That’s why baseball is a radio game and football is a TV game.

We are so different! I don’t retain anything listening to it. It’s like my brain shuts off and my mind wanders. I’m not an audio learner. I’m a visual learner. It worked really well with textbooks, especially if we were allowed to use them for open book tests because I remembered approximately where in a book I saw something and whether it was on the right or left page.

The testing I underwent in the big city was all about cognition, greatly about memory. They found that my visual memory was working pretty well, but that my audio memory was not where they would have expected it to be, pre-brain-injury. I could read a list of words and remember quite well, but when I listened to a list of words, I got lost before she’d get to the fifth one. Little drawings I did OK on.

This may be why I can post here, but other things are giving me more difficulty. Maybe we’re all visual thinkers here. But these things are subject to change.

I really get creeped out by anything that shows injury or damage to fingers. I find it easier to watch whole limbs severed than to see someone lose a finger.

I think it has to do with an image I saw on TV as a kid, there was a PBS broadcast on surrealism (it was late at night, past my normal bedtime) and there was an image depicting a smiling woman who had just bitten off all her fingers.

That really disturbed me back then and I think it has stayed with me ever since

Likewise here, I can listen and repeat something a dozen times and it will not stick. If I want to learn vocabulary or remember a telephone number I need to write things down.

Barring that possibility, I think just the action of tracing out the letters or numbers with my fingertip on a flat surface helps me remember.

Why Dodd-Frank - or its repeal - won’t save us from the next crippling Wall Street crash

Moreover, the laws have been reactionary - rather than visionary - resulting in competing concerns and duplicative audit and enforcement procedures. Not surprisingly, there is largely no coordination or communication between them.

Meanwhile, the SEC - as primary regulator - is bogged down with too many directives, many of which are under- or unfunded. For decades, whenever Congress passed a bill to “regulate” big changes in the markets - from market crashes to “advancements” such as mutual funds and investment advisors - the SEC has been required to add oversight of these new practices to their existing responsibilities. Dodd-Frank, for example, expanded the SEC’s role and called for additional internal audits of existing practices but - like past market-related legislation - failed to include funding for those activities.

Amid all the regulation, investor protection seems to have gotten lost.

299
Birth Control Works  May 3, 2017 • 10:29:14am

re: #298 Birth Control Works

Unfortunately, however, Congress does not fund the SEC in a way that would allow it to pay for the skills or systems it needs to keep up with technological and other market advances. Following Dodd-Frank, for example, the SEC’s budget was actually reduced, even as its responsibilities multiplied.

In sum, what we have is a regulatory system that fails in its mission to protect investors. The structure used to oversee current investment practices, corporate disclosures, product development and technological advances is based on the market failures of 1929. It’s a bit like trying to surf the internet using a typewriter.

Likewise here, I can listen and repeat something a dozen times and it will not stick. If I want to learn vocabulary or remember a telephone number I need to write things down.

Barring that possibility, I think just the action of tracing out the letters or numbers with my fingertip on a flat surface helps me remember.

Yes, I absolutely get that! In school, I would take notes that I never reviewed. It was the actual act of writing it down that put it in my memory. The same with spelling. I do medical transcription and learned all the terminology on my own. I only have to look something up once and that’s it. I think that’s why I was always so good at spelling…actually seeing the words in print.

Moral Foundations Theory was created by a group of social and cultural psychologists (see us here) to understand why morality varies so much across cultures yet still shows so many similarities and recurrent themes. In brief, the theory proposes that several innate and universally available psychological systems are the foundations of “intuitive ethics.” Each culture then constructs virtues, narratives, and institutions on top of these foundations, thereby creating the unique moralities we see around the world, and conflicting within nations too. The five foundations for which we think the evidence is best are:

If a bank/institution/industry is Too Big to Fail, it is Too Big to be Unregulated.

If a business is too big to fail, it deserves the Standard Oil treatment. As far as industries go, if there’s some sort of systematic failure within an industry that makes up a large part of our economy (say, banking) - or is tied to many parts of our economy (say, trucking) - we’re fucked. The point of regulation is to, at the very least, minimize the effects of the potential disaster (there’s not much we can do, for example, if diesel fuel supplies drop or a bad batch of rubber gets used for tires and completely screws up trucking for a month).

How likely is it that your “choice” will already be hammered into your employment contract, and that you’re more than likely never going to see most of that “comp time” you’re owed?

“…The House of Representatives passed a bill Tuesday that would allow employees to swap overtime pay for “comp time,” a rules change congressional Republicans have tried to push through for more than two decades.

Here’s what you need to know about the Working Families Flexibility Act — and how it might affect you.

How would it work?
If you’re an eligible private-sector hourly worker, the bill would give you a choice: Do you want time-and-a-half pay when you clock extra hours? Or do you want to trade that for an hour-and-a-half of comp time you can bank and request to use at a later date?…”

This is something that actually wouldn’t be a bad idea for people working in construction. You might have a stretch where you’re working 50-60 hours a week and then a month later you’re looking at 30 hours a week. But there definitely need to be some safeguards put in place to make it feasible (I say this as someone who has done wage and hour litigation in the past).

Things that I’d include, just off the top of my head: the election of comp time would have to be in writing and could be changed at anytime; an employee could not be terminated for refusing to do comp time; if an employee quits or is terminated, all comp time must be paid on the final paycheck (like vacation time)

Same here in Toronto. I remember watching a car chase on a TV series filmed here. One shot was through a road near a college campus. Next the cars are barrelling past City Hall, which is miles from the first shot.

I’m surprised I got my eyes to unroll.

Sometimes I count skidmarks to estimate how many dry runs a scene required. And in one car chase scene of an old Hawaii Five-0, I saw the lead car lose its hubcaps when cornering —all of five hubcaps fell off.

I’m trying to keep my mind occupied today, and I’m failing miserably. I lost my precious four-legged mixed Chihuahua last night. After his dinner, I let him out to use the bathroom, and while he was out, he was attacked by two other dogs while he was in our own yard. I called for him, and when he didn’t show up, I got into my car to see if he’d gone to a neighbor’s house. I didn’t see him there, but as I turned into my driveway, I saw him laying on the left side of it. When I checked him, he was still alive, so I put him on the backseat and went in search of an emergency animal hospital. None were open. I lost my baby, and I am inconsolable. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, and I can do nothing except think of how he should be here with me. I buried him in the backyard behind my garage because I know he wouldn’t like being buried in a sunny spot. I also had to make the difficult call to tell my daughter that he’d died. I am having a very, very, very bad day. One thing I am going to do is advocate for an emergency animal hospital on my side of the city. No one should have to drive for miles and miles, calling vets whose websites say they provide emergency animal care and discover that they’re closed. I am so sad today. My baby Winston didn’t deserve to be attacked by a set of roaming dogs in his neighborhood, in his own yard and die because of it.

Sorry to hear about your loss. It seems like euthanizing all the wild dogs should be the priority, though emergency vets are good to have too. Where I live, any animal out without a collar, or dog off a leash, is likely to be picked up by animal control

If Trumpcare passes we’ll discover how much it will help elected representatives torn to pieces by irate citizens.

I would take an act of God for Trumpcare to pass the Senate. Pathetically childish Trump just wants to tout “a victory”. To him, the House passing Trumpcare is a “victory”.
