Nevada Declares a State of Emergency After Running Out of Weed

The state of Nevada legalized the use of marijuana for anyone older than 21 in November 2016, but recreational cannabis sales officially began July 1. On Monday, however, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval declared a state of emergency, citing the state’s low weed supply and urging his constituents to adopt some new regulation to encourage more production. Lawmakers and stoners alike can now predict responsibly that high demand and low supply will be a problem for each state that legalizes marijuana. In order to keep “emergencies” like Nevada’s from happening, we’re going to have to develop a smoother plan of attack for rolling out legal, recreational weed.

hey, look, more info on natalia veseltnitskaya…

talkingpointsmemo.com

In 2013, she agreed to represent Denis Katsyv, the son of Russian railroad baron Petr Katsyv and owner of the Prevezon group. The younger Katsyv was accused of collaborating with corrupt Russian officials in the money-laundering scheme. Then-U.S. attorney and “Sheriff of Wall Street” Preet Bharara led the charge against Prevezon; the company, his office said, had used cash from the theft to buy condos in Bharara’s jurisdiction.

Katsyv had been Veselnitskaya’s highest-profile client by far, and his defense would be a world-historic success not just for the wealthy real estate investor, but for the Russian establishment under President Vladimir Putin.

snip:

The suit against Prevezon never went to trial. On March 11, Donald Trump fired Bharara, and on March 21, Nikolai Gorokhov, the Magnitsky family’s attorney and a key witness for the prosecution, fell from the fourth floor of an apartment building, apparently when a rope broke while he and others were trying to move a bathtub in through the window. He sustained head injuries.

The United States settled its case against Prevezon and its associated companies in May for $6 million, a fraction of the judgment a guilty verdict would likely have brought. Veselnitskaya declared victory on Facebook: “[A] 4-Year-old battle of the American State with a Russian citizen is over. With the Russians,” she wrote on Facebook.

Trump can never ever be trusted. Even if you think he should be given a fair hearing first (and he should), are we willing to let him continue for months and months, making decisions about Syria, Iran, Ukraine, the EU? While clandestinely running his own businesses through surrogates?

It’s just not about being fair, it’s about not letting someone who may be compromised retain immense power. There’s a risk threshold that was crossed a long time ago.

The normal, sane people in the US are caught in the deadly vice of the 33% who want a nazi to rule them, and the 33% who couldn’t be bothered to decide who should rule them.

The worst case scenario (nazi) was staved off thanks to FDR, Kennedy, Clinton, Obama, but we still got Nixon (in retrospect & with historical hindsight a much wiser leader that thought at the time), Reagan , W, and now, the worst of all, Caligula Minus.

Until the dynamics of your people change, this will never change, and this time may well be the one time too many, and you won’t be able to glue the pieces back together.

Good point I saw brought up elsewhere: Even if you buy for a second that Jr is telling the truth (I don’t), why in the hell go to him about an adoption program? Back in June of last year, Trump was still a long-shot candidate who a lot of people didn’t think had a serious chance. And he had no political influence whatsoever, so the idea he was going to be able to do anything about the program at the time is ridiculous. So if your angle is to get this program restarted by advocating for the repeal of the sanctions, why go to Trump rather than to Hillary?

54

Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the “stopping the adoptions” a measure the Russians had taken as retaliation against western sanctions — so any talk about loosening adoption restrictions would de facto imply loosening sanctions, right?

If so then Donnie-Boy was quid-pro-quoing something or other, which surely must have been illegal.

Today is a high-holy day on the modern calendar: Prime Day.

I see that one of the special offers is the Music Unlimited for just $.99 for the first four months. I find the default Prime music selection more than sufficient for my purposes, but if you’re really into music and would rather stream then buy, perhaps it’s a good deal.

Which brings up the issue of online music. Spotify may be trying to bring in generic music under false names - but entertainment has always been about smoke and mirrors - yet the current catalog of all music that has been recorded is vast, really vast, and I wonder if “owning” a piece of music will simply disappear one day. We will all just stream what we want, and performers will not sell as much as rent.

Yeah, we’re a big step in that direction already. But there are plenty of sales still of downloaded audio, and still some CD/DVD sales worldwide.

re: #61 MsJ

There is now such click-bait-ness to the English word “fake” that people are just throwing it out there.

Spotify is just selling audio without having to pay artists who would be well enough known to demand a royalty payment. It’s easy for any production company to simply higher musicians with basic skills to come in and make recordings, pay an hourly sum (or daily), and never have to worry about paying future royalties. Spotify sells these songs with names attached to them that are not artist names.

That’s the claim, anyway.

Spotify denies it.

From what I’ve read, is want just any Western sanctions. The adoptions measure was in retaliation to the Magnitsky Act. The act was named after Sergei Magnitsky, an accountant in Russia who blew the whistle on money laundering in the New York property market (Sound familiar?) through the Prevezon group. He was arrested, and subsequently died in prison in dubious circumstances.

The Prevezon group, meanwhile, were being prosecuted in New York for the money laundering. And guess who was the legal representative of its owner? The same Natalia Veselnitskaya who Don Jr had his “adoptions” meeting with on 9 Jun 2016.

More details here.

I guess that depends upon what one wants.

If all that is needed is background music, then it probably doesn’t matter. And as AI progresses and voice synthesis moves to where we can’t distinguish artificial speech from real human speech, we will also face a point where real humans aren’t needed to make musical recordings.

I downloaded some albums from Amazon from Brunuhville, Audiomachine and Two Steps From Hell. There is vocalization on some of the tracks that seems to be from a synthesizer rather than actual people singing. Where an actual person is singing on the track they always give the name of the artist.

Definitely needs to be investigated (but not by Republicans in Congress) because if we don’t get to the bottom of what happened in 2016, we may have a repeat performance next year. Obviously, Russians interfered with Congressional elections last year at every level. We’re focusing just on what happened with the presidential contest but Russian interference was a lot more encompassing.

Nothing suspicious here. Let’s all just move past this.

Speaking of:

The federal government is canceling the search for a new FBI headquarters, according to officials familiar with the decision, putting a more than decade-long effort by the bureau to move out of the crumbling J. Edgar Hoover Building back at square one.

[…]

Officials and executives involved in the process also said a lack of permanent leadership at both agencies could have hindered the case for funding.

Both agencies are operating under transitional leadership, as President Trump’s appointee to the FBI, Christopher A. Wray, has not yet been confirmed, and Trump has not appointed a permanent GSA administrator.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. It’s been a fine morning so far - delays from the Penn Station mess haven’t been as bad in the morning as expected; the PM rush is a different story. But that’s not really what’s bugging me.

It’s the fact that Donny Jr. conspired with Russians to try and get dirt on Clinton. Not only did he seek to get the information, but he initiated the meeting, and brought in Kushner and Manafort too.

These three guys were at this meeting, which was undisclosed (itself a security clearance violation for boy wonder Kushner). These three were running Trump’s campaign and yet we’re to believe that Donny from Queens didn’t know what was going on? Donny asked for Russia to hack Clinton. Junior thought he had a lead on that, and met with the Russians.

So of course, Hannity thinks that this is all a setup. Except for the part that it was Junior who initiated the meeting after daddy sought out Russians to hack Clinton’s emails.

The right wingers are now going to make the claim that collusion isn’t a crime. Just watch. That’s the way they’re going… and the GOP wont stop them, not when they’ve got health coverage to destroy for millions of people so that millionaires can get their tax cuts.

Yeah I don’t envy anyone the NYC commute.

My DC commute is better now that it’s Summer, the commuter bus pretty much zips in without much hassle, I get some reading done. The weather has been comfortable the past few days and I’ve been sleeping well.

Only thing is my rogue ceiling fan—the chain that regulates the on/off and speed broke last week—in the “on” position and I can’t shut it off. Should be linked to the wall switch but it’s not. Don’t mind it on at night but I hate the thought of wasting electricity during the day. Oh well.

The bottom picture is amazing. Well balanced and interesting. I bet if you were to fold it in half, you’d find that the center vertical line is exactly on the fold line. I know children have the uncanny ability to portion off the painting surface in exact fractions. I bet primates have the same ability.

The news revelations about Donny Jr. only means Mueller’s investigators will have yet another avenue of investigation to explore.

Items that we should expect to be included: emails to/from Jr.; text messages to/from Jr., phone calls, and other communications to/from Jr.

If Jr. was stupid enough to send emails on this matter (he was), then you can expect that he probably told daddy too because nothing gets done without passing it by daddy (at least that’s how Trump has always portrayed himself to media). But what’s the story going to be if that didn’t happen? That Jr. went rogue and took Kushner, Manafort and all the rest for a ride on the criminal conspiracy cruise? They were already on the ride, given their prior undisclosed contacts, meetings, and incessant lies.

How long before we hear that Ivanka was also involved, or Eric?

Emails? Email correspondence should be off limits to investigators. That’s how it’s always been done. Hands off Trump emails!

Alan Futerfas, the lawyer for the younger Mr. Trump, said his client had done nothing wrong but pledged to work with investigators if contacted.

“In my view, this is much ado about nothing. During this busy period, Robert Goldstone contacted Don Jr. in an email and suggested that people had information concerning alleged wrongdoing by Democratic Party front-runner, Hillary Clinton, in her dealings with Russia,” he told The Times in an email on Monday. “Don Jr.’s takeaway from this communication was that someone had information potentially helpful to the campaign and it was coming from someone he knew. Don Jr. had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed.”

What a steaming pile of horse-sht.

On the plus side, it’s going to be a lot harder for ISIS to expect loyalty when their so-called “caliph” is dead. And they’re losing territory bit by bit.

I’ve often pondered on the fact that the trouble begins when these numbnuts - ISIS’ foreign fighters - return to their countries of origin. They’ve been defeated. Their outlandish End Times prophecies have been shown to be so much bunk. Certainly, many of their friends may well have been killed.

I could be mistaken in this, but I’m thinking they’re going to want revenge. And they’re not going to be too fussy about how they get it.

I’d be careful with Carrie Nation, too.

[Embedded content]

In photos, Carrie looks like a typically stereotyped little old lady. In fact she was 6 feet tall and weighed close to 200 pounds, a considerable margin over most men of the time. She also had backup from local churches and media when she was terrorizing Kansas saloon keepers around the turn of the last century. The authorities were at least tacitly on her side, too——-possibly because saloons themselves were technically illegal in Kansas. She was usually arrested pro forma after the damage was done and let go with a trivial fine. In some respects, she was an early example of a religious right terrorist.

addendum:

She described herself as “a bulldog running along at the feet of Jesus, barking at what He doesn’t like”, and claimed a divine ordination to promote temperance by destroying bars.

Just substitute gays, Muslims etc. for “bars” and AR-15s for Carrie’s hatchet, and you have today’s Talibaptists.

When 39-year-old actor Nelsan Ellis died Saturday, his manager Emily Saines said he died of “complications with heart failure.”

On Monday, though, Saines released a new statement showing the story to be much darker and complicated than that. The heart failure was caused by Ellis’s attempt to stop abusing alcohol on his own, which had been a lifelong but private struggle for the actor. The subsequent withdrawal led to his death.

So much of this strain of terrorism is decentralized and in the form of lone wolf attacks. IS continues to claim credit where possible, but it’s really just a bunch of disaffected guys who carry out these heinous attacks. There’s no easy way to protect against it - not when they’re using whatever means are at their disposal - trucks, knives, etc., as well as firearms and explosives.

The risk in the US remains incredibly low - it’s far more likely someone in the US gets caught up in a garden variety mass shooting (3+ shot) than a terror attack. But the terror attack gets the press, and Trump fixates on Islamic terrorism to the exclusion of all other forms of terrorism. That too influences IS (and the Islamophobes) into thinking they can get the clash of civilizations they want by hyping terror attacks and hoping they get a military response from the US that spurs even more people to join against the US.

Just referring to that line about the Russian government’s support, just playing devil’s advocate here, but by itself that wouldn’t necessarily be incriminating. Can’t really control what one receives in an email if it wasn’t solicited.

However, to have gone on to 1) arrange a meeting with this guy and his associate; 2) Deny that any contact took place; 3) Deny and criticize anyone who suggested collusion between Russia and DJT; 4) say this was all just about adoptions; 5) for Jared to have lied about this on his security form, etc.

The solicitation came from Donald J. Trump asking Russia to hack Clinton. Everything else flows from that indisputable statement uttered on television and repeated ad nauseum in reruns. That was the action; this was a response by and through intermediaries.

That Trump Jr. thought this was the real deal and that they could have the goods on Clinton shows his own intent to further a criminal act. We’re talking about conspiracy to commit various crimes (where intent is what matters, even if the ultimate act is not achieved).

The equivalent is Junior wanted to go catch fish by fishing. He went on a boat and spent the day on the water with his rod and reel, but never caught a fish. That doesn’t mean Junior didn’t go fishing. He can’t say that he went sunning when he was on the boat and had the rod and reel. He went fishing, but didn’t achieve the goal of catching a fish.

That Trump Jr is idiotic enough to think that this somehow absolves him is actually staggering to me. That his lawyers thought this was a good idea (or even knew what he was up to) is staggering. Much more likely, given what we know of the Trump approach to lawsuits, is that Junior went ahead and released this without his lawyers knowing and that his lawyers are probably all like WTF Donny?!

Any lawyer worth their salt would make sure their client shuts up ahead of any kind of potential criminal prosecution to avoid implicating themselves in one or more crimes. Trump doesn’t know or care.

They should.

Also, Junior has opened the door for prosecutors to go after so much more about Junior’s background - everything from bank statements to emails, texts, phone calls, etc. All of his communications. All of it.

He replied within minutes: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

Four days later, after a flurry of emails, the intermediary wrote back, proposing a meeting in New York on Thursday with a “Russian government attorney.”

Donald Trump Jr. agreed, adding that he would likely bring along “Paul Manafort (campaign boss)” and “my brother-in-law,” Jared Kushner, now one of the president’s closest White House advisers.

I guess we can proceed to the THIS IS ALL FINE JUST WHAT DEMOCRAT PARTY DOES ALL THE TIME! stage of the investigation.

Carrie Nation’s group, the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, still exists and has about 5000 members (down from a peak of 350,000 in the early 1900s). It never openly endorsed her campaign of violence and vandalism but it did pay for her headstone, inscribed “Faithful to the Cause of Prohibition, She Hath Done What She Could.” Today, the WCTU still campaigns against booze and has added marijuana, other illegal drugs, and gay marriage to its list of targets. re: #328 Belafon

You could possibly argue that the system set up does not handle everyone being able to vote (not just white male landowners). But what they failed to take into account was that there would ever be enough people that would not be opposed to a man under the influence of a foreign government.

I reread the Federalist Papers on the electoral college back in November following the election. It seems pretty obvious that the original idea behind the Electoral College was that the Electors would not be bound to a particular candidate. We’ve changed the system so much over the intervening 230 years, though that our system is fairly different from what they envisioned.

(Also, who was actually allowed to vote was originally left up to the states, New Jersey actually had something resembling universal suffrage in the first decade or two after ratification)

So, this happened. The world’s gone nuts, I tell ya. Nuts.

On Tuesday morning, 24 hours after the incorrect report fueled a days worth of incorrect discussion about Comey’s memos, Fox & Frends co-host Steve Doocy issued an on-air statement that the show was “mistaken.”

“Yesterday on this program we aired and tweeted this story saying former FBI director James Comey leaked memos containing top secret information,” Doocy said. “We were mistaken, in that according to the report half of the information in the report clarified secret or classified level, not top secret.

“Documents in which Mr. Comey leaked are at this point unclear,” Doocy added. “Just wanted to straighten that out.”

My guess is that Legal told them they were exposing themselves to a potential libel suit.

That’s obvious bullshit, it’s why he lied all through the campaign about not having any Russian contacts. From Brooks:

In her thorough book “The Sum of Small Things,” Elizabeth Currid-Halkett argues that the educated class establishes class barriers not through material consumption and wealth display but by establishing practices that can be accessed only by those who possess rarefied information.

Said information can be found in public libraries and free on Google.

Life is not fair. People start out not all on the same footing. Some children just have a head start due to circumstances they did not create.

Not only is this not new, it’s never really been denied by anyone who is open to a discussion on the issue.

It is a strawman to put up that somehow we have previously pretended to live in a flat-society. There was no pretense of such.

What well meaning people have done, and which has reaped some reward, is by taxing the rich we can provide more education to the poor.

Yet even that is now under attack by the atavists.

So the last thing I’m going to challenge is those who are well educated but who will acknowledge that those with more money carry more responsibility for paying for our civilization.

It’s those who are wealthy who want to escape this responsibility at whom I’m peeved.

So if there’s some double-Doctorate couple out there pulling down a household income of $250k, and send their kid to a private school, I’m not going to point my finger at them and say they are the problem, as long as they are willing to pay their taxes to fund education for those less well of then them.

On the other hand, some “Libertarian” 24y.o. geek on the internet who complains about taxes because he’s working at some fast food place and sees he’s paying for SS out of his check, and wants to eliminate the evil government - he’s the one who I think is the real problem. That’s the practice. Of course we can learn some of that stuff online. I did. A lot. To the point where I was a better software engineer than coworkers with degrees. And yet it’s the bachelors and masters degrees I got after that have opened doors. Which I was able to get because Texas paid for my education after the Navy. re: #188 Interesting Times

Yikes…talk about a headline that perfectly encapsulates my worst fears:

Can democracy survive hordes of willfully ignorant voters?

Money quote (writer is talking about flat-earthers, but you could just as easily substitute anti-vaxxers, climate deniers, YECs, etc):

That goes back to the argument on-line the other day I had with a vegan, who insisted that Vitamin B-12 occurs naturally in water. It is only city water plants chlorinating water that “kills” B-12, making it necessary to either eat meat or take supplemental vitamins.

Funny that city water supplies aren’t actually required to chlorinate water, unless the water supply tests positive for coliform bacteria. No one who owns a well chlorinates their water.

No amount of evidence would satisfy this moonbat (or wingnut, I couldn’t tell). I’m just some horrible animal murderer trying to make shit up.

In the meantime, this morning we are in fact chlorinating our water (about a once-a-year occurrence), because the water lab called me at home to tell me yesterday’s coliform test came back marginal (2 cells / 100 ml). Maybe we shouldn’t have fixed our water tower /s. I was out firing up the mothballed chlorinators and overflowing the water tower (to get chlorine into it). Next test Thursday. Probably get calls all morning from people telling me “the water tower is overflowing.”

Folk in town complain about having a city water supply in a town of just over a hundred people and having to pay for things like chlorine (but not a water operator, as I noted yesterday this is like a job but without the benefit of the slavery of wages - heaven forfend they pay me for this).

If we cannot operate our water system however, we are required to get someone else (who would charge us a fortune, as the town found out when our water operator died and we had to get someone to come in forty miles to run it), or the state will make everyone put in a well and septic tank (and that would be way more expensive than our water system).

By this afternoon the overflow from the tower should measure positive for chlorine, then I can put the wells back on automatic and quit flooding the town.

I was replying to his comment about some secretive information.

What you’re raising in the problem of accreditation. Simply having an institution (of some sort) bestow their blessing on you and now you have a piece of paper to wave around.

That is a problem that has also always been with us but I think it’s reinforced in all sorts of ways, not just with college degrees. Ultimately it’s back to the “us” part of “us vs. them” - we define the “us” by finding a way to differentiate people.

I’ve long been fond of finding a way to change higher education in the US, to do away with the current structure of degrees and degree programs. I’d much rather have institutions emphasize learning for the sake of learning, and then if we need a way to illustrate that any particular person has a skill in a particular area, that we have an accreditation process that isn’t based on ass-hours-in-classroom-seats but rather on demonstrated experience and expertise.

I’ve seen almost no Republican do that.

By the time they realize it’s not going to “just go away”, it’ll be far, far too late for the GOP elite.

re: #426 HappyWarrior

This stuff literally is worse than Watergate.

There have been many political scandals in the US during my lifetime. Most centered around personal foibles that while meaningful to the family involved, usually adultery, in the big picture don’t matter so much. Even most white-collar crime, which often is about money, are pretty straightforward cases of greed.

The malicious ignorance of the Trump gang is probably more damaging to us in the long run. Going back to that recent Pew poll, we are now at a time when a non-trivial portion of our society is buying into the idea that education is evil.

This is the Trump Effect - making willful ignorance a virtue.

I keep on hoping that the election of Trump was the last yell of a segment of the country angry at how much we’ve changed but my optimism isn’t what it was. There’s a lot of ignorant people out there and they do vote. The rise of the alt-right just disturbs the hell out of me. The alt-right ain’t old farts. They’re predominately younger.

The good news is that Trump’s ISIS policy is essentially continuing Obama policy. (snort - considering that Trump said he’s got a better plan and would do it 30 days after election…)

Trump is allowing the military to do what it deems necessary. So, they went with Obama’s policy designed by his Defense Department.

I wish I had faith that this would result in anything, even the smallest of legal consequences. Unfortunately I don’t.

I once did, back when I believed America was a nation of laws. However, it is quite clear that laws do not apply to white Republicans, especially rich white Republicans, and especially authoritarian rich white Republicans.

When was the last time someone like that actually faced and received a legal consequence? The Bundy gang was arrested, and then completely exonerated, acquitted of all charges. Authoritarian cops murder black people blatantly and willingly, and are subsequently acquitted. I can’t think of a high profile case or person in the last decade where justice was actually served.

America has always been a self-correcting nation. Whatever the problem, it has always ultimately corrected because of the power given to the people. In the 21st century, however, we found the ability to corrupt not just a few people, but millions of people. We found that with mass media and the internet, we could make half of the people members of an evil cult. So how does it correct now? How do you have legal consequences when the jury of your peers, the officials who bring the charges, are also members of the cult?

499
makeitstop  Jul 11, 2017 • 10:54:00am

Heh, indeedy.

Donald Trump Jr. is just Staggeringly Incompetent.

There is much to be shocked by in the revelation that Donald Trump Jr. was offered incriminating information about Hillary Clinton as “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.” There’s the fact that the president’s son accepted the offer. There’s the fact that he offered advice on when the information should be released for maximal political impact (“especially later in the summer”). There’s the fact that he took a meeting with someone described to him as a “Russian government lawyer” to discuss the information.

And then there’s the fact that did all this in an email chain, a chain that could be and was retrieved and released for the public and prosecutors to see.

What Trump Jr. did was morally wrong — there’s little doubt about that. What you do when foreign governments offer you assistance in an election is call the FBI, just like the Gore campaign did in 2000 when they were mysteriously sent video of George W. Bush’s debate practice.

But Trump Jr.’s behavior was not just wrong. It was staggeringly, astonishingly incompetent. He didn’t just engage in a conspiracy to enlist a foreign government to help win an election, he left written records proving that was what he had done.

Beyond the criminal and moral issues at stake, this incident should make us doubt the basic competence of the people the president has chosen to advise him and help run the country.
