Interestingly, I read that some of the Russian interference was not just directly whipping wingnuts into a racist froth, or depressing Dem enthusiasm by picking at the Sanders scab, but also trying to get groups like Muslims or Blacks to be more activist, with an eye to frightening white people.
Disinformation designed to get journalists to overreach? I think Rachel Maddow was talking about that earlier this year She did a piece on a tantalizing bit of gossip that was being floated, which was too good to be true. They couldn’t find anything but flat denials from any source, so they didn’t run with it, but she was concerned that in these days of everyone needing to be first to publish, someone would let something slip through, and it would tarnish not only them, but the whole field.

I remember the first Obamacare SCOTUS decision and how certain networks jumped the gun and got it wrong.
People were reading the decision as they were reporting it, because being the first with the story is so important. Back when it was newspapers, or a 6PM nightly news show, they had time to read the whole thing and report more accurately, and it STILL seemed like a mad rush.

The whole thing is scary and infuriating, but here are a couple excerpts from the transcript.
DAVIES: I want to come back to Sam Clovis, the guy that the Trump administration nominated as the chief scientist for the Department of Agriculture who you say didn’t have a background in science, was a talk show host. What do we know about his effect on the science program in the Department of Agriculture so far?
LEWIS: We know nothing yet. I mean, the question is - it’s very hard to see what they’re doing now. I mean, it’s still early days. And the sad truth is that you could put someone who is wholly unqualified into that job, and the society wouldn’t feel the effects for a very long time because the kind of research that’s being done is research in - is research that will pay off 30 years from now or 40 years from now.
So this is to me - there’s a theme in the sort of risks that the Trump administration are taking by putting people who are not suited for jobs into the jobs. And one of the themes is that they’re - a willingness to tax the distant future for the political present because the distant future really doesn’t have a voice at the table.

DAVIES: You want people who want - know how to keep nuclear material safe.
LEWIS: Safe - exactly. So it’s that kind of thing. Like, you know, if you let the wrong kind of people close to the process, yeah, it’s hard to know how it will go wrong. It’s just - you just know it’s not going to go more right.
DAVIES: One of the things that struck me when you were writing about things that the Energy Department does that aren’t apparent to anybody in the public is things like, for example, its contribution to containing Iran’s nuclear program and waste. You want to just describe that for us?
LEWIS: Well, Obama’s secretary of energy, Ernie Moniz, is a nuclear physicist. He really knows how to build an atom bomb, or - and what you need for it. So he was at the table with - during the Iran negotiations. And he was so pleased with the result of the negotiations because he knew that what they were being denied, or what they agreed to deny themselves, would deny them the nuclear capability.
And that was the whole goal of the negotiation. So the Energy Department and the expertise in it is what you need at the table when you’re trying to prevent some foreign country from getting its hands on nuclear weapons.
DAVIES: So if a new presidential administration comes in that is suspicious of the agreement, they need to understand the technical details to know whether it’s an effective agreement or not, which means they got to pay attention and listen to the people in the department, right?
LEWIS: Absolutely. If you’re not - you can’t just say that’s a bad deal without sitting down with people at, like, Los Alamos who will explain to you why it’s not a bad deal, while, in fact, this is going to prevent them from getting nuclear weapons.

This evening before the village board meeting I went out around the village lowering the flags to half-mast … the President issued a proclamation for that.
While I only had to face down a person with a gun once (he pointed a loaded rifle at my chest; I took it away from him), I do not get to push out of my mind what’s going on. Every time such a proclamation comes out, I have to lower the flags, then raise them again when the proclamation expires.
We’ve had a lot of those proclamations since I was put in charge of the village flag committee.

Tonight’s village board meeting included a wireless Internet provider making a pitch to the village board (and me specifically as the water system operator) to put up wireless service on our water tower to compete with CenturyLink (our telephone company).
The company in question is a privately-owned company that provides Internet service to little towns in Wyoming, Colorado, and western Nebraska. Generally, they pay the town a nominal rental fee to put up antennas on high structures such as water towers, and also provide free service to the town government.
They made a similar pitch to us tonight, offering to pay the town a nominal fee and provide free Internet service for our fire brigade, village office, and public library. (Currently, the village office and public library pay nearly $400 a month for Internet service and the fire brigade has no Internet - individuals like myself pay $120 a month for Internet).
The company provides service to a number of villages around us, but our area is a big hole in their coverage. They will be forwarding a formal proposal to us for our next meeting.
Their own Website notes that their service is about a fifth of what I pay now. Their Wireless service would also put a signal out in the rural county area around our town for a couple miles or so.
The Saudi Arabia story reminds me why I appreciate Rachel Maddow’s thoughtful, explainer style.

I still have to fill out my ballot. We do it by mail here in Colorado. Damn thing has been sitting there on my bureau for over a week now. It’s a boring ballot, hey, it’s an “off-year.” There’s a tax question involving cannabis and mental health, a tax question funding the community college, and primary and secondary school board seats, most folks running unopposed.
Way I figure it, no matter how I vote, it will be seen as “good” for Trump. Either Northam wins and we’re told that the closeness of the race means Democrats are “struggling” in the era of Trump. Or Gillespie wins and we’re told that it means that Trump’s not as toxic to the GOP brand as advertised.

So I usually watch a little of the Today Show and today they did another of those let’s check with the Trump voters to see what’s up segments. This time it was billed as One Year Later. The people (I think they are people) they found are pretty much still sticking with their vote for Trump. Some are disappointed but they still say they would vote for him in a do-over.

A an elderly woman was shown in a clip from last year where she was overjoyed with Trump’s win. Former Democrat voter too. She warned last year that Trump needed to engage brain before opening mouth. Today she is disappointed that he still tweets and says dumb stuff…but she is sticking with her man.
What? This country has a citizen problem…not just a Trump problem. Too many idiots.

I agree with you on that. Better enforcement is needed for sure. When I say, I disagree with arguing it as a state/local issue, I think it does ignore that all of our states are connected in some way. Like take D.C. for example, you can literally walk to Virginia from D.C. or take a train. When wingnuts talk about Chicago, they ignore A) its close proximity to Indiana and B) That it actually doesn’t have the strictest gun laws in the nation. I agree with you. Don’t we regulate all sales of automobiles? I seem to recall when a teenager bought one of my Dad’s old cars from an ad, there was a lot of paper work involved in the transfer. I think guns should operate under a similar principle.

I’ve seen one of the “true cross” relics…..it was in a monastery in Greek Cyprus. Encased in a rather fancy silver display glass.
Hell, for all anyone knows, it could’ve been a discarded toothpick from some Middle Ages kebab joint somewhere in the Levant. But people believe it is indeed a genuine, bona-fide piece of the cross.

I told him in a gentle way that would be a huge mistake given that Northam is A) significantly better than GIllespie and B) our state has a history of close races. I just don’t get these people. What the green-tea party types hope to do is replicate the Tea Party’s taking over of the Republican party by making it so that the Democratic party believes that the only way it will win is to kiss up to them.

He’s a terrific guy. I’ve met him twice. The best thing about Tom I think is not just that he’s a great ally but he has a wonderful sense of empathy. I get the feeling it is 2 things combined.
He is trying to lay out enough information to force cover from Trump, by letting him know what he could possibly testify to in the hopes of a pardon. Just teasing as it were. These are not contradictory data points. Whilst this is a good article, it’s strange to read from a UK perspective, as the age of consent over here has always been 16 for heterosexual sex, and more recently for homosexual sex- so some of the examples in the article are not underage from a UK perspective.
The age of consent is a difficult issue: one can- and should- debate about when people are mature enough, but the simple fact is different people mature at different times, and that can’t be easily legislated for- a line has to be drawn in the sand somewhere. Set the bar too low, and you risk people who are not mature enough being exploited. So it’s more a case of: a general agreement on when someone is old to give consent, and from them on, make sure the law respects that consent. It’s a fudge to be sure, but it’s better than the alternatives.

I agree that people should be given the presumption that they will spend it or invest it however they think is best. Yes, there will be some irresponsibility, but it doesn’t matter in the end - being irresponsible with relatively small amounts of money will still boost the overall economy. However, I think it must be the same amount given to everyone, regardless of income level. Giving it only to the poorest increases resentment and is functionally no different from welfare. Giving the same to everyone, even the rich, will make basically no difference in overall cost (because the number of poor is much greater than rich), make only a very tiny difference to the rich (because the amount is low compared to what they already have), make a huge difference to the poorest, and leave less room for complaint as everyone is treated the same.

My thinking on it, very early still, is leaning towards something like: $2500 per month, non-taxable, for everyone over the age of 18. I’m not making moral judgments about how people choose to spend the money (quite frankly, even if they “waste” the money, it’s going to help the economy). I am also approaching this from more of a libertarian point of view - having that BGI would give workers a bit more leverage, it would give more people a chance to do what they really wanted to do rather than working a job they hate for too low of wages. The other thing that got me thinking about it is the fact that more categories of jobs are going to be disappearing due to automation - just as we’ve seen factory workers replaced by robots, and bank tellers replaced by ATMS (Chase even has ATMs inside the branch now), we’re going to see truck and taxi drivers replaced by self driving cars (and probably longshoremen replaced by robots) - we are going to have to rethink how our economy works.
