re: #7 Blind Frog Belly White
In my experience, that mostly happens with elementary school.
Once you get to middle school or high school, not so much.
It’s still a pathetic indictment of our educational system nonetheless.
Typically in high school, teachers have to scramble for textbooks.

Interestingly, I read that some of the Russian interference was not just directly whipping wingnuts into a racist froth, or depressing Dem enthusiasm by picking at the Sanders scab, but also trying to get groups like Muslims or Blacks to be more activist, with an eye to frightening white people.
Disinformation designed to get journalists to overreach? I think Rachel Maddow was talking about that earlier this year She did a piece on a tantalizing bit of gossip that was being floated, which was too good to be true. They couldn’t find anything but flat denials from any source, so they didn’t run with it, but she was concerned that in these days of everyone needing to be first to publish, someone would let something slip through, and it would tarnish not only them, but the whole field.

People were reading the decision as they were reporting it, because being the first with the story is so important. Back when it was newspapers, or a 6PM nightly news show, they had time to read the whole thing and report more accurately, and it STILL seemed like a mad rush.

I know, I’m just pointing out that the tweet linking to that Politico article is very misleading.
It’s really maddening and disheartening, as someone who has always tried to get the facts straight and not spread disinformation, to see people who are deliberately making up stories getting very successful at that con game.

Speaking of former presidents, here’s Obama doing something Trump probably hasn’t done since military school.
Just finished an interview on CBS This Morning. If you missed it, the full interview should be on their website soon.
Fresh Air has Pete Souza on tomorrow, and they had Michael Lewis (Moneyball) about his articles in Vanity Fair about the DT administration basically destroying our government departments from the inside (Energy and Ag first two written) and a new book as well. I learned a lot from Lewis and am really looking forward to hearing Souza!

re: #68 JordanRules
The whole thing is scary and infuriating, but here are a couple excerpts from the transcript.
DAVIES: I want to come back to Sam Clovis, the guy that the Trump administration nominated as the chief scientist for the Department of Agriculture who you say didn’t have a background in science, was a talk show host. What do we know about his effect on the science program in the Department of Agriculture so far?
LEWIS: We know nothing yet. I mean, the question is - it’s very hard to see what they’re doing now. I mean, it’s still early days. And the sad truth is that you could put someone who is wholly unqualified into that job, and the society wouldn’t feel the effects for a very long time because the kind of research that’s being done is research in - is research that will pay off 30 years from now or 40 years from now.
So this is to me - there’s a theme in the sort of risks that the Trump administration are taking by putting people who are not suited for jobs into the jobs. And one of the themes is that they’re - a willingness to tax the distant future for the political present because the distant future really doesn’t have a voice at the table.
—Recorded prior to Clovis withdrawing—
DAVIES: You want people who want - know how to keep nuclear material safe.
LEWIS: Safe - exactly. So it’s that kind of thing. Like, you know, if you let the wrong kind of people close to the process, yeah, it’s hard to know how it will go wrong. It’s just - you just know it’s not going to go more right.
DAVIES: One of the things that struck me when you were writing about things that the Energy Department does that aren’t apparent to anybody in the public is things like, for example, its contribution to containing Iran’s nuclear program and waste. You want to just describe that for us?
LEWIS: Well, Obama’s secretary of energy, Ernie Moniz, is a nuclear physicist. He really knows how to build an atom bomb, or - and what you need for it. So he was at the table with - during the Iran negotiations. And he was so pleased with the result of the negotiations because he knew that what they were being denied, or what they agreed to deny themselves, would deny them the nuclear capability.
And that was the whole goal of the negotiation. So the Energy Department and the expertise in it is what you need at the table when you’re trying to prevent some foreign country from getting its hands on nuclear weapons.
DAVIES: So if a new presidential administration comes in that is suspicious of the agreement, they need to understand the technical details to know whether it’s an effective agreement or not, which means they got to pay attention and listen to the people in the department, right?
LEWIS: Absolutely. If you’re not - you can’t just say that’s a bad deal without sitting down with people at, like, Los Alamos who will explain to you why it’s not a bad deal, while, in fact, this is going to prevent them from getting nuclear weapons.

I’m tired of poems like this, sent to all members of CERT (I’m pretty sure I’m the only liberal on the group):
Tribute to Soldiers (author unknown)
It’s the Soldier, not the reporter
who has given us the freedom of the press.
It’s the Soldier, not the poet,
who has given us the freedom of speech.
It’s the Soldier, not the politicians
that ensures our right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.
It’s the Soldier who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag.
I really wanted to write back:
As a veteran, in a family full of veterans, I will say this is inaccurate. There are plenty of countries with strong militaries that prevent these very rights. While the military ensures that we can practice these rights, if the press didn’t fight for them, they would lose their freedoms. If we don’t use our right of free speech, we will lose them. A strength of our system is that the military serves under civilians.
I’m also really against being used as a prop to try to shut down other people’s speech.

This evening before the village board meeting I went out around the village lowering the flags to half-mast … the President issued a proclamation for that.
While I only had to face down a person with a gun once (he pointed a loaded rifle at my chest; I took it away from him), I do not get to push out of my mind what’s going on. Every time such a proclamation comes out, I have to lower the flags, then raise them again when the proclamation expires.
We’ve had a lot of those proclamations since I was put in charge of the village flag committee.

So that’s what the Coen Brothers are doing over west of me (that movie I tried out for). They aren’t shooting a comedy Western like they claimed, they’re really shooting a political comedy-of-errors.
This would be a good place to shoot such a film, because there are so few people here to expose what they’re doing.
re: #40 Skip Intro
Boy that Paradise Papers report sure fell off the media radar fast.
Maybe it’s too early for the press to report. It’s a massive amount of data that can take a while to review. There should be a team investigating the documents before there can be series of articles discussing the contents.
Tonight’s village board meeting included a wireless Internet provider making a pitch to the village board (and me specifically as the water system operator) to put up wireless service on our water tower to compete with CenturyLink (our telephone company).
The company in question is a privately-owned company that provides Internet service to little towns in Wyoming, Colorado, and western Nebraska. Generally, they pay the town a nominal rental fee to put up antennas on high structures such as water towers, and also provide free service to the town government.
They made a similar pitch to us tonight, offering to pay the town a nominal fee and provide free Internet service for our fire brigade, village office, and public library. (Currently, the village office and public library pay nearly $400 a month for Internet service and the fire brigade has no Internet - individuals like myself pay $120 a month for Internet).
The company provides service to a number of villages around us, but our area is a big hole in their coverage. They will be forwarding a formal proposal to us for our next meeting.
Their own Website notes that their service is about a fifth of what I pay now. Their Wireless service would also put a signal out in the rural county area around our town for a couple miles or so.
The Saudi Arabia story reminds me why I appreciate Rachel Maddow’s thoughtful, explainer style.

We gotta ride these elections out ‘till the wheels fall off though.
See, elections in VA follow a certain rythym. The early evening sees rural counties where livestock outnumber humans report early, causing Democrats to despair and Republicans to believe they’ve got the vote in the bag. Then as the night wears on, NoVA and city voters start reporting in and the race swings to the Democrats, leading Republicans to start swearing that “the fix is in” and the race is being “stolen.” Finally, it comes down to the wire and we’re told by wingnuts that everything north of Richmond needs to be sold to Maryland or broke off into its own state so the “true Virginians” can live as they please.

especially for people shot in a church. Talk about coals to Newcastle…
Morning. Election morning that is. Gonna hit the school where I vote in an hour or so.
So I usually watch a little of the Today Show and today they did another of those let’s check with the Trump voters to see what’s up segments. This time it was billed as One Year Later. The people (I think they are people) they found are pretty much still sticking with their vote for Trump. Some are disappointed but they still say they would vote for him in a do-over.
But the absolute most frustrating guy said basically “sure he can be an ass, but does the media have to show us he is an ass?” I think the guy worked at GE in Western Pennsylvania and said he voted for Trump because he had lost his job and Trump told the people at a rally last year there would be no more of that. 600 more people have been laid off or lost their job in the last year. He still sticks with Trump because he’s a tough guy.
A an elderly woman was shown in a clip from last year where she was overjoyed with Trump’s win. Former Democrat voter too. She warned last year that Trump needed to engage brain before opening mouth. Today she is disappointed that he still tweets and says dumb stuff…but she is sticking with her man.
What? This country has a citizen problem…not just a Trump problem. Too many idiots.
I get the feeling a lot of these people are still in the same mind state of denial that allowed them to vote for Trump and are protective of their vote. They may never say they screwed up.

re: #234 ObserverArt
I briefly flipped on FandF on Fox. The “reporter” was in one of those “every man” cafes—must have been Norfolk or nearby cause he said it was filled with Navy vets—interviewing doughy white people asking how much Gillespie was going to win by.
Exceptional.

Could this be one reason why Robert Mercer stepped down?
Offshore cash helped fund Steve Bannon’s attacks on Hillary Clinton
Robert Mercer, whose spending assisted Donald Trump’s election win, used tax haven of Bermuda to avoid US taxes
But the financial arrangements of another foundation, which bankrolled Bannon’s creation of the book, Clinton Cash, have received less scrutiny.
Leaked documents and newly obtained public filings show how the billionaire Mercer family built a $60m war chest for conservative causes inside their family foundation by using an offshore investment vehicle to avoid US tax.
The offshore vehicle was part of a network of companies in the Atlantic tax haven of Bermuda led by Robert Mercer, the wealthy hedge-fund executive and Bannon patron whose spending helped put Trump in the White House and aided a resurgence of the Republican right.
Mercer, 71, appears as a director of eight Bermuda companies in the Paradise Papers, a trove of millions of leaked documents on offshore finance reviewed by the Guardian, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and other partners. The files include a copy of Mercer’s US passport and other private data.

Chicago doesn’t have the strongest gun laws in the nation. It’s up there.
But it’s also adjacent to one of the weakest gun law states in the nation, which means the guns flow freely up the Iron Pipeline. Many of the guns used are being purchased elsewhere for use in Chicago.
NYC has a similar Iron Pipeline, as majority of guns used in crimes are purchased elsewhere. Crime in NYC (and the US as a whole) has been on decline for 20 years. NYC is at or near historic lows across the board on crime.
Where crime is on the rise? The Trump admin, which drained the swamp and funneled all the criminality into the WH.
Even GOPers are starting to complain about how the Trump admin isn’t getting it done. Well, they want the corruption and sabotage to go much faster, which isn’t the same thing as recognizing that they’re doing something wrong.

Indeed and that there is why I think it’s wrong to treat guns as a state/local issue. Indiana guns go to Chicago just as Virginia guns have gone to D.C.

True, but so little, so late and largely guys on the way out of politics. That grudge we rightly hold against Trump voters, the unrepentant deplorables? Cubed when aimed at our representatives from the GOP in legislatures from DC to the state capitols. They let it get this far. However far tomorrow brings.

Of course, but the Bannon/Mercer/offshore thing is definitely front and center, at least for today.
Yeah, lots of British pols are feeling a bit of heat right now. I wonder how the Queen is taking it? Perhaps walking the grounds of Balmoral Castle, muttering obscenities under her breath, with only the Corgis to hear it.

Gotta wonder where that mailing list came from, tho.

The news that the Texas church shooter was supposed to be unable to buy gun under existing law is a real pisser. If we can’t pass the obvious bans like bump stock, can they at least do a better job with the laws already passed and long in? Some regard this argument as an argument against new laws. FTR, not intended here. I just think better enforcement like running down prohibited persons and getting the guns back out of illegal possession will help on the street.

Yeah, the Royal Family was doing well in public opinion since the days following Diana’s demise, but now they are really being seen by many as an archaic, as a parasitical appendage that needs to be excised and put out to pasture.

I agree with you on that. Better enforcement is needed for sure. When I say, I disagree with arguing it as a state/local issue, I think it does ignore that all of our states are connected in some way. Like take D.C. for example, you can literally walk to Virginia from D.C. or take a train. When wingnuts talk about Chicago, they ignore A) its close proximity to Indiana and B) That it actually doesn’t have the strictest gun laws in the nation. I agree with you. The laws we have right now need to be better enforced. Nothing unreasonable at all about that.

Don’t we regulate all sales of automobiles? I seem to recall when a teenager bought one of my Dad’s old cars from an ad, there was a lot of paper work involved in the transfer. I think guns should operate under a similar principle.
re: #265 HappyWarrior
Agreed, but you still have to trust the seller to do the paperwork every time. A cash sale in the middle of the night could be easily missed.
Also, do you really think we’ll ever get the GOP to agree to that?

If you or the buyer doesn’t tell the state that you sold a car, you can be held liable for any wrecks from the car. We require guns to be registered, and to transferred when sold.
And if someone brings up Red Dawn, remind them that it’s a movie, and ask them their thoughts on talking race cars.

Nothing is going to change as long as the NRA and the Gun Lobby (pretty much the same thing nowadays) continue to convince Americans that guns are a magic talisman that will protect us all from crime, terrorism and tyranny.
And let me say, I’m tired of scapegoating people with mental illness. And furthermore if we’re that concerned about mental illness, let’s actually do something rather than pretend we care about it after shootings. As someone who has suffered from anxiety, I know that better access to Lexapro has helped me.

That’s right. The thing is. The one side of the gun control debate has moved one direction and the other has more or less stayed constant but the media won’t tell you that. Dana Loesch in her infinite gun whining definitely won’t tell you that.

I made the same point to my wife this morning. If guns aren’t the problem and mental health is, let’s get moving on that front. These gun fuckers don’t get to have it both ways.
I was nice with a self fancied progressive friend who said the progressives are refusing to back Northam. I let him know our state’s history of tight elections and the issues where Northam is miles better than Gillespie.

I made the same point to my wife this morning. If guns aren’t the problem and mental health is, let’s get moving on that front. These gun fuckers don’t get to have it both ways.
Right. Let’s actually do something about mental health instead of using it after a shooting. The thing is it’s just a scapegoat for Republicans. I haven’t seen anything that suggests that Kelley had a mental illness. I think the mental illness stuff is because we don’t want to see ourselves in these shooters. It terrifies us that someone in their right mind could gun down 26 innocent people in a church and I get that but scapegoating those with mental illness isn’t the way.
I am a Christian. I don’t hide that. I do pray, but I also believe in SUPPORTIVE, MEANINGFUL ACTION to go along with the prayer.

Mayoral election today. (Non-partisan, yeah right)
The choices:
A good solid Dem with plenty of legislative experience who’s smart and definitely has a plan for the city.
A Republican anti sanctuary city, anti immigrant ordained Baptist minister with a vague plan for something or other. Not really sure.
Dem pwned The R in a Q and A session by knowing actual fact about finance. So the R, who had been fairly personable and really pretty smart just went on a “fake news” blah de blah Trumpster attack that completely showed his true colors.
I shook both of their hands. Eww. I shook a R’s hand. :D

No shame in praying at all. However, as you say action matters too. And elected Republicans who offer prayer after these shootings do have the ability to make action. The right has twisted criticism of the prayers as someone how an attack on prayer and Christianity but what it is, it’s a criticism of empty action by people who have the capability to do something. I don’t mind the lay citizen offering his prayers after a shooting. There’s only so much he can do but Speaker Paul Ryan and the hundreds of other elected Republicans, YOU are a lawmaker. You can do more than give your prayers and you’re full of shit when you claim we can’t “legislate” evil because we do. It’s not as if murder isn’t a crime.

So do we know how he was able to buy the guns? I saw where the military apparently didn’t forward information about his domestic violence incidents. Did he buy them at unregulated gun shows?

Air Force Chief Master Sgt Slain In Texas Church Shooting Was Everything His Killer Was Not
Retired Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Robert Corrigan and his wife Shani were shot and killed when former airman Devin Patrick Kelley opened fire Nov. 5 at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. They were just two of the 26 parishioners murdered and 20 others wounded by Kelley before he died of a gunshot in a high-speed chase with two bystanders. But Corrigan, 51, wasn’t just another innocent victim caught in the deadliest mass shooting in state history; he was everything that Kelly was not.

One of my out of state holier than thou lefty friends when I posted my planned ballot for today talked about how the progressives are refusing to support Northam. I told him in a gentle way that would be a huge mistake given that Northam is A) significantly better than GIllespie and B) our state has a history of close races. I just don’t get these people. I mean, I can understand having a different preference in the primary- I backed Perriello and as you guys know spent many a Saturday doing campaign work for him whether it was phone calls or knocking doors but since Ralph won in June, he’s had my full support and I knocked doors for him too. I think they have no idea how to build real change and it’s a shame because there are a lot of important issues in this state and country.

What the green-tea party types hope to do is replicate the Tea Party’s taking over of the Republican party by making it so that the Democratic party believes that the only way it will win is to kiss up to them.
The problem is that the tea party had a huge advantage. If they lost, the country wasn’t going to go to shit, they weren’t going to lose Medicare or Medicaid, their kids would still get to go to school, and a whole host of other things. If the left loses, more and more will be taken away.

He’s rallying people not just for Northam, Fairfax, and Herring but also for their local House of Delegates races. So to you Tom, I say Thank You. Thank you for being all class even though you were obviously disappointed by this Spring’s results, you didn’t let your ego get in the way of the big picture.
re: #309 Dr Lizardo
One mini-thread within that thread caught my eye; about how the movie First Blood has a strong undercurrent - the titular hero had been trained to kill, and was exceedingly good at it, and he could simply no longer fit into normal civilian life, becoming a vagrant, until his mind snaps after an encounter with small-town bastard cops and his lethal training comes back to the surface.
And that’s true…..that’s all there in First Blood. But it gets buried in all the action.
And he is killed like the proverbial rabid dog in the book but that was not a Hollywood acceptable ending.

He’s a terrific guy. I’ve met him twice. The best thing about Tom I think is not just that he’s a great ally but he has a wonderful sense of empathy. When he talked about police brutality on the campaign trail as a primary candidate, he talked about how with him, he was just characterized as a hyperactive youth while a less well off black kid wouldn’t have gotten that luxury and man he is great at answering questions. He doesn’t give cookie cutter answers. He takes your individual question seriously. I like Ralph and know he’ll be a great governor but I hope Tom considers running again here in Va.

I think he may be super intelligent and amuses himself by playing games with people. He’s gotten too far into all of this to just be crazy.
Some super smart people think they can game everything and everyone. I get the feeling Carter is enjoying all of this.
He may just have the goods to blow this whole investigation wide open and he knows it. He may figure he has enough dirt on the big people in all this he can use it to keep himself out of jail.

The other huge advantage is that the Tea Party actually had a legitimate workable plan on how to take over the party.
Step 1. Be a member of the party or at least part of that party’s base
Step 2. Vote in every election, especially the party primaries
Step 3. Vote for the candidates most aligned with you in the primaries
Step 4. If your candidates lose the primary, vote for the party candidates in the general
Step 5. Continuously demand ideological fealty from your politicians
Step 6. Vote for an even more ideologically aligned candidate in the primaries next time.
Step 7. Lather, rinse and repeat
The Greens/Left plan
1. Don’t bother to vote
2. Pick a favored candidate, but don’t vote for them in the primary either because you can’t be bothered or you’re not actually a party member and can’t
3. Whine if your favored candidate loses
4. Don’t bother to vote in the general or vote third party vanity candidate
5. If Democrat wins whine about his/her impurity. If Democrat loses, insist your candidate would have won
6. Pick another real, true progressive to pin all your hopes to
7. Lather rinse and repeat.
The reason the left is irritating is specifically because they are not behaving like the Tea Party. They aren’t making themselves an indispensable and dependable part of the Party base. If they were active parts of the coalition and voting for all Democrats they’d have a bigger, more prominent seat as the table.

Apparently, a good guy (non-LEO/off-duty LEO) getting the bad guy renders irrelevant how many victims there were prior to that. It will shortly be revealed that Kelley was going to consume thousands with fireballs from his eyes and bolts of lightening from his arse but for the good guy with a gun.

And Japan really needs to come to terms with its sometimes less-then-glorious past. But then again, there’s quite a few countries that need to do that (I’m looking at you, Turkey - amongst others).
Agreed.
But Turkey gets a disproportion of criticism for its refusal to acknowledge its past compared to Japan, for obvious reason.

Overall violent crime has fallen, though O’Rielly wouldn’t have admitted that while working at FNC. However, a particular type of violent crime - mass shootings - are rising. These are not contradictory data points. It’s like saying that sales for candy in general are down, but for Whatchamacallits, sales are rising (trying to think of which candy isn’t particular popular, but that is one I do love).

I’ve been thinking recently about the idea of basic guaranteed income, and have been doing some very basic research on the idea. It’s quite interesting who has supported the idea in some way or another over the years: Thomas Paine, MLK, Milton Freedman, Nixon. Might do a page on it once I’ve got my thoughts in order.
I support a version that pays out annually - you send in your tax form and if you’re below $x,000 you get a check for the amount to take you up to X. Some will waste it but more won’t and it would be a huge boost to the economy. I think giving people the presumption that they will use it correctly will get folks doing so.

David Bowie and Rock ‘n’ Roll’s Statutory Rape Problem (The Daily Beast)
Whilst this is a good article, it’s strange to read from a UK perspective, as the age of consent over here has always been 16 for heterosexual sex, and more recently for homosexual sex- so some of the examples in the article are not underage from a UK perspective.
The age of consent is a difficult issue: one can- and should- debate about when people are mature enough, but the simple fact is different people mature at different times, and that can’t be easily legislated for- a line has to be drawn in the sand somewhere. Set the bar too low, and you risk people who are not mature enough being exploited. So it’s more a case of: a general agreement on when someone is old to give consent, and from them on, make sure the law respects that consent. It’s a fudge to be sure, but it’s better than the alternatives.
re: #413 FormerDirtDart
Would it be unfair to argue that while the overall violent crime has fallen significantly, a specific subset of violent crime (mass shooting incidents) is on the rise? What BillO said there isn’t entirely inaccurate…..the USA is at historically low levels of violent crime; I’ve seen Lizards point that out here as well.
But it certainly does seem that the aforementioned specific subset is increasing in frequency.

I agree that people should be given the presumption that they will spend it or invest it however they think is best. Yes, there will be some irresponsibility, but it doesn’t matter in the end - being irresponsible with relatively small amounts of money will still boost the overall economy. However, I think it must be the same amount given to everyone, regardless of income level. Giving it only to the poorest increases resentment and is functionally no different from welfare. Giving the same to everyone, even the rich, will make basically no difference in overall cost (because the number of poor is much greater than rich), make only a very tiny difference to the rich (because the amount is low compared to what they already have), make a huge difference to the poorest, and leave less room for complaint as everyone is treated the same.

But it will fuck with the wingnut article of faith that people earn money based on their talent and “hard work” and virtue.

My thinking on it, very early still, is leaning towards something like: $2500 per month, non-taxable, for everyone over the age of 18. I’m not making moral judgments about how people choose to spend the money (quite frankly, even if they “waste” the money, it’s going to help the economy). I am also approaching this from more of a libertarian point of view - having that BGI would give workers a bit more leverage, it would give more people a chance to do what they really wanted to do rather than working a job they hate for too low of wages. The other thing that got me thinking about it is the fact that more categories of jobs are going to be disappearing due to automation - just as we’ve seen factory workers replaced by robots, and bank tellers replaced by ATMS (Chase even has ATMs inside the branch now), we’re going to see truck and taxi drivers replaced by self driving cars (and probably longshoremen replaced by robots) - we are going to have to rethink how our economy works.

Step 7. Lather, rinse and repeatThe Greens/Left plan
Exactly. And how to get them to notice it is beyond me.

1. I would suggest giving it out monthly as opposed to annually to prevent someone from blowing it/losing it all up front and having nothing to live on.
2. Everyone gets the same amount, but it would be treated as just another source of income subject to all witholdings and taxes.
