GOP Senate Nominee (And Far Right Religious/Homophobic “Culture Warrior”) Roy Moore Accused of Sexually Assaulting 14-Year Old Girl

Politics • Views: 34,344

How surprised am I by this?

If I had to quantify it, I’d say, not one fcking bit.

Leigh Corfman says she was 14 years old when an older man approached her outside a courtroom in Etowah County, Ala. She was sitting on a wooden bench with her mother, they both recall, when the man introduced himself as Roy Moore.

It was early 1979 and Moore — now the Republican nominee in Alabama for a U.S. Senate seat — was a 32-year-old assistant district attorney. He struck up a conversation, Corfman and her mother say, and offered to watch the girl while her mother went inside for a child custody hearing.

“He said, ‘Oh, you don’t want her to go in there and hear all that. I’ll stay out here with her,’ ” says Corfman’s mother, Nancy Wells, 71. “I thought, how nice for him to want to take care of my little girl.”

Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says. Days later, she says, he picked her up around the corner from her house in Gadsden, drove her about 30 minutes to his home in the woods, told her how pretty she was and kissed her. On a second visit, she says, he took off her shirt and pants and removed his clothes. He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear.

And it isn’t just one, either.

Aside from Corfman, three other women interviewed by The Washington Post in recent weeks say Moore pursued them when they were between the ages of 16 and 18 and he was in his early 30s, episodes they say they found flattering at the time, but troubling as they got older. None of the women say that Moore forced them into any sort of relationship or sexual contact.

The last time the Senate expelled a member was in 1862 during the Civil War War of Southern Treason.

Though they have began proceedings against Senators since, just most have resigned. The latest being Bob Packwood. I wonder if the Senate Republicans would expel Moore if he were to win the election?

22
Jay C  Nov 9, 2017 • 11:19:52am

from prior thread:

Garance is on point, as she usually is: but there’s a major difference in the two cases. Anthony Weiner’s sexting scandal broke pretty much in real time - or with a very short timeframe (even though it’s taken years for him to get sent up). It’s a different matter when accusations only get aired decades later: regardless if they are true or not (and I believe so: Moore’s published rejoinder is heavy on attacks, and dismissive of the accusations, but doesn’t (AFAICT) refute/deny the charges categorically).

Ha! I just posted a page about this story. I’ll C&P part of my page:

But of course, Moore ran to Breitbart “news” to issue a denial of the impending story, in which he said the story was concocted by the Democratic Party to defeat his senatorial campaign.

“These allegations are completely false and are a desperate political attack by the National Democrat Party and the Washington Post on this campaign,” Moore tells Breitbart.

In addition to being a White Nationalist, a gun fetishist, a homophobe, and all around creep, Roy Moore can now add [alleged] pedophile to his grow listing of right-wing accolades.

This has me seething. Because of yet another instance of sexual abuse and harassment? Nah, I expect that. Always have. Just like every other woman. It’s what we LIVE and have lived forever. Don’t speak out? Get punished. Speak out? Get punished worse. Lose jobs. Lose careers. Get blacklisted as “troublemakers”.

So what has me seething today more than usual? Because until it’s a political weapon, it simply isn’t an issue of importance is it? It’s always been this way, men abusing and harassing women, molesting girls. So what? It’s only getting attention at the moment (just like during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings when such surprise and horror was feigned) because it’s a tool to harm a political opponent. It isn’t about the reality of women’s lives and the bullshit that will continue to be tolerated.

You are right, and I hope the national moment we are having will lead to real change in the world so that the victims of harassment can confidently report it and expect that its actually addressed. Up until now, 75% of victims of sexual harassment are retaliated against for reporting it, so they are victimized a second time if they speak out, which is shameful.

I don’t believe the women came forward to bring down a political opponent. All the shrieking about Weinstein being a Dem donor was after the fact, when RWNJs saw that there was political hay to be made.

I agree it isn’t political on the part of the victims coming forward in this or any other case. They are seeking justice at very long last, validation at least.

The publicity, the fact that they are getting attention now is the political part. Do we really think all these women have been mute all these years? That they haven’t talked about it to others, probably many, many others? How often have we heard that this behavior was well known by others as it was going on? It only becomes a Thing when it can be weaponized and then there’s suddenly all this “concern” for the victims and public horror at the behavior.

The proof that we really don’t care much about this as a nation is the election of an admitted sexual predator.

Sweet. Al Giordano more or less echoed what I’ve been saying about Perriello helping Northam out. Bernie apparently said he didn’t campaign for Northam because he wasn’t asked to. Dude, you didnt’ even endorse him. And sometimes you don’t need to be asked. The Virginia Democratic Party didn’t ask Tom P to campaign with all the House of Delegates candidates that he did. Tom chose to do that and it’s why God willing we might see Tom back in office somewhere in Virginia.

I don’t disagree.

At the same time, the more we have these well-publicized cases, the more women are speaking out because some support is finally there, and some people who have otherwise been successful at burying their heads in the sand are finally waking up and realizing that this is not the isolated small issue that they used to be able to write it off as. I’m hoping it can result in a change in the culture where it is easier for a woman* to speak up and be believed, where fewer women have to come forward in order for us to do something, and where men start to be proactive allies instead of simply looking the other way.

That’s the part where I am hoping for a change, and potentially optimistic that we might be seeing the start.

This case was going to be a bombshell either way because it’s not sexual harassment in the workplace but child molestation. (Really, let’s face it, that’s why it’s getting the screentime it is. If he’d confined himself to women just over the age of 18, nobody would blink an eye, based on what my ex seemed to be doing the last time I talked with him.)

* I am using woman as the descriptor here but this can and does apply to men too and they should be equally listened to when it happens to them.

According to Alabama law, Moore cannot be removed from the ballot — but if the state Republican Party pulls its endorsement, votes for him won’t count and it can run a write-in candidate. There was buzz around Capitol Hill in the immediate aftermath of the explosive report that’s the path Republicans might pursue.

Good luck with that.

Dispiriting talk with my fox news parents today…..

Forbes reports today that the GOP tax plan eliminates medical device deductions for the disabled, deductions for businesses who install improvements like wheelchair ramps etc…and other reporting has it that the GOP is targeting grad school tuition help(!!!!)

Basically, if you are a low income or middle income grad student (especially in the hard sciences), you generally get your tuition paid for in an arrangement where you work as a research assistant or geology 101 teacher etc and you live on a small stipend that is already taxed while your tuition is provided.

That tuition cost is set to be taxed and the bill would be astronomical. You are not getting income per se….you are not being paid, but you would still have to pony up thousands of dollars you do not have and that your stipend could not possibly cover.

Of course my dad thought this was not a problem and godammit why the hell do you expect to get do much stuff for free and pay your own damned way to school and don’t expect me to pay your damned school and hell no we never deducted your moms wheelchair expense too many damned freeloaders what do you take us for anyway??!!

My dad literally has no problem kicking low income people out of grad school if they cannot afford a tax hike that is being used to pay for upper income tax cuts. He seems to think that private endowment monies at schools are being robbed out of his pocket and by God he isn’t going to pay for freeloaders to go to college.

Oh, and disabled people shouldn’t get a break either.

Flying Squirrel Girl  Nov 9, 2017 • 12:20:48pm

I’d wager that every woman in this thread has a harassment/assault story. Here’s mine:

When I was about 10 years old, my sister and I were walking home from school. A man drove past us, then a few minutes later passed us again. The second time he drove very slowly and as he passed us he threw a polaroid picture out the window at us. The picture was taken in the car, and it was a photo of his erect penis.

A couple years later we were walking to the pool at the Y with a friend. As we walked along a busy street facing oncoming traffic, a car slowed as it approached us. As the car drove past, a man’s arm shot out the window and grabbed my crotch.

When I was 19 I worked for a trucking company. The general manager was fired and in the interim someone from the corporate office came in to run things. He would frequently comment that I looked “stressed out” and would helpfully (/////) massage my shoulders. He started bringing me into his office and giving me projects that I could only work on with him. It wasn’t until one of my co-workers who was about 10 years older than me said, “You know you don’t have to let him touch you, right?” that I understood that I was being sexually harassed. I never confronted him but I avoided him and would twist away whenever he put his hands on me until he got the message and stopped.

Tom chose to do that and it’s why God willing we might see Tom back in office somewhere in Virginia.

and given the fact that Bernie backed Tom in the primary shows that, when the general election came around, who is the real Democrat (and the bigger person).

The corruption case against Menendez pretty much rises or falls on whether the jury applies the McDonnell case. The US Supreme Court curtailed and severely narrowed the definition of corruption when it expanded the notion of official acts.

To them, Hillary was as bad as an actual rapist for defending a guy accused of rape even though she dreaded taking the case. The DA in that case backed her up. I obviously felt terrible for the victim in that case but her anger at HRC was misplaced. And it was disgusting how the Trump campaign used her.

re: #163 Flying Squirrel Girl

My stories are so various and multiple it’s sickening to write down the list. First molestation was at 4 years old, had it happen by 4 different men over ages 4-10. Then I got a slight break as I outgrew one set of deviants, then it picked up again when i was 16. I stopped counting the inappropriate advances and touching. I was raped when I was younger. The last violent assault was at 43 years old. I am 45 now.

Age did not matter. Marital status did not matter. Job type did not matter. I used to think i had something about me that invited it. Now I know I’m not alone by any stretch of the imagination.

If you ask women to list all of the cases of “traditional” assault…let’s take molestation, physical assault (being forced up against walls, groped, held down against your will), and rape, the list would stagger you. If you add in verbal coercion, sexual harassment, casual ass-grabbings and people brushing up against you, people getting naked in front of you, naked photos you don’t want, man, pick your poison…you won’t find a woman that hasn’t experienced it.

I am glad so many people are coming forward now. This is not just the tip of the iceberg, it’s a seagull perched on the tip of an iceberg. There are a lot of really shitty people out there and they don’t limit themselves to one victim. They get away with it once and keep doing it.

When Kyle Whitmire says rumors had been around a long time, remember that he is a reporter/columnist in Alabama. This business was news to me.

I counted yard signs on the drive to work. 10 for Jones, 0 for Moore. If only yard signs could vote! In any case, there are no yard signs in Republican yards for anybody to remove as a form of comment or protest.

They haven’t even cracked academia yet, when it comes to older people abusing the young under their supervision and/or tutelage. That is one rotten egg. The Sandusky case was a peak into it.

Hello WW. Good to “see’ you.
Jerry Sandusky was known. They looked the other way. Chose to. I heard every excuse under the sun in that one. Nope. All I heard was “My football team” and “Why are they punishing my football team?” Yeah. Your team. Fuck those kids. Hundreds I’ll bet. Jerry was a saint. Defensive genius. Story goes, Joe was going to die on the field, so Jerry so loved PSU, he just turned down a gazillion dollars to stay and run his….Charity. What a man. Hunting grounds. Hell, that one mother who refused to shut up that broke the case got death threats. They told her to shut up, “Jerry will never come back and teach our boys football.” JFC.
He was a known predator, and I will take that to my grave. No way something goes on that long without cover. JoPa destroyed his legacy with what he did not do.
“But he never knew.” Bullshit. Joe RAN that town.
I sat with a friend who was a PSU apologist outside the Bryce Jordan Center one night before a concert. Across the street is the new Ice Rink, announcing PSU to Division 1 Hockey. On the hill behind us sat Beaver Stadium lit up. And the BJC in front of us.
He didn’t think anyone knew. I said, “Look around. What do you see?” He didn’t get it.
Power. Money and more power. You going to go up against this? They will destroy you. Your whole life in in this valley. They can take it from you. Ruin you. Your kid. Your job. Where you going to go? Everything.
I like to think I got him to think. That is what every sexual assault victim is up against.
Money. Power. Ruin.
Yeah, Jerry Sandusky tore the lid off, and all some people did was cry about a damn football team.
This didn’t get as much coverage as it should have. For 20 Years, Gymnasts Said Their Doctor Was Sexually Abusing Them—And Nothing Happened

I’m so sorry for what you had to experience. I wish you all the best.

Oh, I’m ok. I’ve had a whole lot of help and an amazing husband. I’m tough as hell now. Last person that tangled with me regretted it enormously. But he was not in a professional position of power over me. He had nothing he could hold over my head. So, I didn’t have the math of, “If I defend myself, what will happen to my career?” And that’s the math a lot of women have to perform. “Do i report it and burn down my career, or take it and deal with it when it ends?”

I posted that because I want people to realize that I am not rare. People face this daily, and people like Moore, Weinstein, Louis CK, Kevin Spacey…there’s never just one victim. Throw in the kind of power these men had over the people they lured in and it’s beyond disgusting. I try to be a sweet, loving person, but gelding is too good for them.

When I posted about yard signs for Doug Jones (D) vs Roy Moore (R), I had no idea that the shit would hit the fan. A few tidbits for you:

When Kyle Whitmire says rumors had been around a long time, remember that he is a reporter/columnist in Alabama. This business was news to me.

I counted yard signs on the drive to work. 10 for Jones, 0 for Moore. If only yard signs could vote! In any case, there are no yard signs in Republican yards for anybody to remove as a form of comment or protest.

It was good to hear that Moore even felt the need to distribute signs—there are none here, so I though it was a tactical decision. (Still owe you an answer on the Birmingham Jones campaign office.)

Yeah I was just telling some friends that. I’m glad that more men and women feel comfortable coming forward because we seem to be being more willing to listen than we were in the past.

And what started this “more willing to listen” - the attacks on movie people - those with left leaning politics - those who supported Hillary Clinton. The Political media will validate anything if it can be tied to the democratic party.

Trump was on film gleefully shouting about how he can treat women - because $$$ - and they elected him President. Moore will probably get elected.

Just pages this excellent article in the still-publishing Playboy (yah, I know, I’ve always just read it for the articles) that takes stock of where we are now, a year after the election of Trump.

What has Trump really done? We can all run down the list of shitty things, but there is one big overriding thing that has gotten lost in all the noise:

One of the hardest things to understand about Donald Trump’s election victory isn’t the fact that there are seemingly millions of people who believe whatever he says despite factual evidence of the contrary. It isn’t the White Supremacists who’ve been emboldened by Trump and it isn’t the billionaires who are aroused by Trump’s tax, business and healthcare plans. It isn’t hard to understand Trump supporting and subtly encouraging a class wherein the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and it isn’t hard to understand how the rich manipulate events with wads of sweaty cash to grease the wheels of government on their behalf.

No, the hardest thing to understand about Trump’s victory are the millions of people who held their nose and pulled the lever thinking he was the lesser of two evils. Worse, it’s those who acknowledge every factual bit of evidence about Trump but still believe he is the lesser of two evils. That speaks horrendously for our Republic.

The takeaway: the biggest change Trump has made is that it is now impossible to pretend that our politics, the way we govern ourselves, is working in any meaningful way any more.

As a country, we have lost our way.

Elections have consequences. But only for the little people.

The rich live in a consequence-free world.

Our core problems - income inequity, environmental destruction, mass shootings, racism, sexism, inner cities abandoned to crumble into “Chiraq” … we aren’t dealing with ANY of that.

Our country is broken. Trump is just the instrument that rubs our noses in it.

I don’t believe the women came forward to bring down a political opponent. All the shrieking about Weinstein being a Dem donor was after the fact, when RWNJs saw that there was political hay to be made.

The women didn’t - but the media did - INSTANTLY. Weinstein was trashed, Hillary was trashed (again) - every pundit demanded she say something. It was political before I read the first story.

This might sound like a strange version of optimism, but you’re seeing the cornered white supremacists, those that wear the uniform and those that don’t, fighting to hold on. They know they’re going to lose it, but they’re doing everything they can to hold on. What we’re seeing are the results of the faults in our current system that need to be fixed: gerrymandering, the EC, Citizens United. As with what happened in VA, it’s going to take all of us to fix it, but now is our time to set things up make some of those fixes.

The question for me is did Moore know he was crossing a line, or was he really just asking these girls on a date?

He lured them away from their mothers to go off alone with him.

If it’s so pure and innocent, why lure them into private places, away from their mothers? Why isolate them?

He’s a sexual predator. Would not matter if the women were 16 or 36.

In other news, Sturgill Simpson is a badass.

In the midsts of answering questions, Simpson is asked about his thoughts on Trump. The singer lets loose: “He’s a fascist fucking pig,” he said. “And I’m not afraid to say that because at this point, anybody that’s still supporting that guy can’t be anything, in my mind, other than an ignorant fucking bigot.”

“Anybody that is surprised to hear me say that, that’s going to unfollow me or stop listening to my records, they probably weren’t listening that closely any way,” he continued.

And he gave a mock CMA acceptance speech:

“Nobody needs a machine gun, coming from a guy who owns a few guns. Gay people should have the right to be happy and live their life any way they want to get married to anyone they want to without fear of getting dragged down the road behind a pick up truck. Black people are probably getting shot in the streets and being enslaved by the industrial prison complex and hegemony and fascism is alive and well in Nashville, Tennessee. Thank you very much.”

My favorite touring rock band Umphrey’s McGee covered one of his songs at their New Year’s show last year, that’s the first I ever even heard of him. I now have all three of his albums and I can definitely say he’s one my favorite country music artists. His stuff is so good.

There’s a video of the FB Live at the link. He’s a pretty cool guy, and he shouts out to Jason Isbell and Chris Singleton a lot. And he does ‘Turtles’ live on the sidewalk outside the CMA.

That arrangement was institutionalized after the Civil War, when aged veterans routinely married teen-aged girls of poor prospects. The old men got end-of-life care. The girls became a series of “Last Confederate/Yankee Widows” in the 21st Century.

It fascinated me how fast this discussion changed from a 32 year old man picking up a 14 years, and then

“Alone with Corfman, Moore chatted with her and asked for her phone number, she says. “

But if everyone here wants to talk about the proper dating rule being half your age + 7 I’m sure the GOP will thank you for it.

Yes. This.

Push our faces in shit long enough and we can’t pretend it’s not there.

That means we’re going to have to put on our Big Boy Pants and fix some of the underlying systemic problems.

GOP candidate for governor running in third place (behind Newsom and Villaraigosa, and within the margin of error of Chiang who is in 4th). Yes, you read that right, there’s a chance that the GOP won’t do better than fourth place in the open primary.

In the Senate race, the only GOP candidate finishes in third place with less than 20%.

Trump’s approval ratings out here are under the crazification factor - only 22%! (couldn’t find the party breakdown, but I’m guessing he’s under 60% among Republicans)

It’s very analogous — and turnout generally is very depressed in off-off year elections. The question will be voter enthusiasm — and how enthusiastic are the GOP voters in Alabama.

Of course, in Alabama, a 32 year old man involved with a teenage girl may not be a problem for the typical GOP voter. Certainly doesn’t seem to bother some of his colleagues there.

You know, maybe it’s just naivete but I wonder if there’ll ever be a point when Lumpy’s viewers go “Goddamn just shut up about the Clintons, Sean.” But then again, I concede I’m being idealistic here.

Rick, I’ll suggest the same thing I did to Richard Painter, leave the GOP. We don’t have to be ideologically in agreement but you can still be a sensible voice for right of center politics without hte GOP label.

Maybe we should start a GoFundMe to build a new party.

Yeah, bullshit. The Post reported what they were told, not by anonymous sources, but by women who were identified. It quoted them. You can dambetcha the Post has their sources on tape.

Plus, Moore is a Public Figure. So the Moore’s can go pound sand.

Yeah, I know - this is intended to fool the rubes. And Mrs. Moore probably knows the truth, since she’s 14 years younger than he is.

Discovery will be a bitch to the Moores.

That’s usually what happens. They scream & yell, and then their lawyers take them into the conference room and start game-planning out the questioning they’re about to undergo. Where their sexual history is now open to inquiry.

Under oath.

That’s about the time these fucks scuttle away.

It’s all about the ratings, because ratings = $$, and at Fox, that’s all that matters.

Oh, I’m pretty sure that in the unlikely event that they actually DO file a lawsuit, it will be unceremoniously dropped on 14 December, win or lose.

More likely they won’t even file suit. This is all done for the rubes.

That arrangement was institutionalized after the Civil War, when aged veterans routinely married teen-aged girls of poor prospects. The old men got end-of-life care. The girls became a series of “Last Confederate/Yankee Widows” in the 21st Century.

That’s how my great-grandmother ended up with a 60 year-old father when she was born. Civil War veteran.

I hate agreeing with Jonah.

He still feels the need to ground his reaction in patriarchal terms. Being father to a daughter is the only rationale he can articulate for feeling that young girls shouldn’t be victimized. This is a mental framework that conservative men almost always fall into, the idea that any empathy for women they might have stems from their familial relationships to other women instead of the inherent equality and rights women possess on their own.
