If there is one good thing about the Trump Presidency, it’s that it has done an outstanding job of motivating people in this country to become politically active and get involved.

With any luck, this surge may mean we never get stuck with someone like Trump ever again.

I saw this quote on Reddit - the poster claims to be a lawyer.

Lawyer here.

This agreement is not invalid simply because Trump didn’t sign it. The terms are clear, and she was paid the money as contemplated by the agreement. The fact that Trump didn’t sign it is irrelevant because it was signed by his agent.

However, and this is the good part, all Trump needs to do to soundly beat this lawsuit is adopt the contract. If his lawyer had Trump’s authority to execute the agreement, then all Trump has to do is acknowledge and adopt the contract, and it is 100% binding.

Stormy Daniels’ lawyer knows this. But they also know that politically Trump cannot acknowledge or adopt this contract. This is win-win-win for them. Either (1) Trump refuses to adopt the contract, in which case she gets out of it and gets to sell her story to the networks, (2) Trump adopts the contract, and that in itself is a news story, or (3) she gets more money from Trump to drop the suit.

Edit: A few people are correctly pointing out that another issue for Trump is that asserting the contract was for his benefit may also have implications for an FEC violation.

Now, I know……..it’s Reddit. But if any of our lawyerly types can post an opinion, it’d be greatly appreciated.

It’s also shown how the rule of law is meaningless as long as people like Paul Ryan and Mitchel McConnell continue to ignore those laws to the benefit of their own party. There should be clear cut means to immediately remove people from office for the behavior they’ve exhibited, as well as unpardonable jail time. Trump was never qualified to be sworn into office. They chose to ignore the details and every other disqualifier afterwards.

The New Yorker has a fascinating read about one of my least favorite insects, the brown marmorated stinkbug. But I’ve only had to deal with having one or two in my apartment at any one time. Some people in the States have discovered them by the thousands in their homes when it gets cold outside.

And they are spreading west and south from their original immigration point, which more than likely New York Harbor.

Slightly less noxious but vastly more pervasive, the smell of the brown marmorated stinkbug is often likened to that of cilantro, chiefly because the same chemical is present in both. In reality, stinkbugs smell like cilantro only in the way that rancid cilantro-mutton stew smells like cilantro, which is to say, they do not. Pam Stone compared their actual smell to the ammonia-and-sulfur stench that suffuses the air outside paper mills. Others have likened it to everything from rotten fruit to filthy socks. A for effort. In fact, the smell produced by a stinkbug is dusty, fetid, lingering, and analogy-proof. A stinkbug smells, unhappily for us all, like a stinkbug.

Along with cheap yoga pants, mass layoffs, and the recent surge in nationalism, the brown marmorated stinkbug is a product of globalization. It is native to East Asia—mainly China, Taiwan, Japan, and North and South Korea—where, kept in check by various natural predators, it has coexisted with the rest of nature in relative tranquillity for millions of years. But then, on September 21, 1998, a gentleman from Allentown, Pennsylvania, deposited several specimens of a mystery insect in the office of Karen Bernhard, an entomologist who works at Pennsylvania State University’s Extension Service.

Bernhard could not immediately identify the specimens, which was not in itself surprising. In both number and variety, insects dwarf all other animals; worldwide, there are some nine hundred thousand known species, while between two million and thirty million more have yet to be catalogued. (By comparison, there are just over five thousand species of mammal.) Since the United States boasts ninety-one thousand of those named insect species, some of them quite rare, plus almost as many unknown ones, it isn’t that unusual to come across a stumper. Eagle-eyed 4-H’ers have been known to go bug collecting and come home with an insect that no one in the county has seen before.

It is unusual, however, to find an insect that no one in the country has seen before. At first, when Bernhard sent her specimens off for identification, she was told that they were a native stinkbug, Euschistus servus, but something seemed off. Although those bugs do sometimes make their way indoors, they are not normally household pests, yet all the people calling Bernhard were asking about insects they had found in their homes. In the fall of 2001, armed with a new batch of identical specimens, she contacted Richard Hoebeke, an entomologist specializing in invasive species, who was then at Cornell and is now at the University of Georgia. Within weeks, Hoebeke had determined that the specimens were brown marmorated stinkbugs, the first ever identified in the Western Hemisphere.

Not long afterward, Hoebeke travelled to Pennsylvania to see the new species in situ. “It’s kind of burned into my memory,” he said. Hoebeke had seen plenty of stinkbugs in his time, but never in such quantities. “They were flying everywhere—in the air, around people’s window screens, everywhere. I had my windows open, and so many were getting in my car that I had to be really careful that I wasn’t going to transport them back with me. I was utterly amazed at the numbers.” By their sheer quantity, it was clear to him that brown marmorated stinkbugs had been in the area longer than scientists knew. Together with some colleagues, he began scouring records like those kept by Bernhard and eventually determined that the first verifiable specimen appeared in Allentown in 1996, most likely via a shipping pallet from China.

newyorker.com

Worse than their tendency to shelter inside during the winter, stinkbugs also will eat just about anything — trees, flowers, crops — during spring, summer and fall. As an invasive species, there are no natural predators here to control them. They seem resistant to most insecticides. And global warming only makes them more active and prolific.

I hope none of you suffer from stinkbug infestations. One or two bugs at a time was enough for me.

UK to Roll Out Pilot Voter ID Programme (goes to the BBC)

The government in the UK is rolling out a “pilot” programme to require photo ID in five locations for the upcoming election.

Conservatives there are making the same arguments they do here: It is to protect the integrity of the vote.

A vast coalition of orgnaisations are calling on the government to scrap the plan, noting it will marginalise those least likely to have ID (minorities, the poor, &c)

New Mexico Republicans Want a Catholic Church Official Punished for Calling Them Racists (Goes to Raw Story)

GOP, as always big on freedom of speech and religion.

Ya know, maybe if you don’t want to be called racists, you shouldn’t be the party of Rep. Steve King and David Duke, just a thought. And spelling is fundamental if you’re going to write a letter, just sayin’. (more at the link):

A group of Republican lawmakers want a Catholic Church official reprimanded for calling them racist for their opposition to funding programs for poor children.

Allen Sanchez, executive director of the New Mexico Conference of Catholic Bishops, took part Feb. 14 in a candlelight vigil outside the state Capitol in support of a proposed constitutional amendment to increase funding for early childhood programs, reported the Santa Fe New Mexican.

“We feel there’s an element of racism here,” Sanchez said at the demonstration. “If you look at the footage of the hearings around this proposal, the opposition came from people with power and wealth. They don’t understand what is going on in our communities with poverty.”

The Catholic Church officially backed the proposed measure, but a group of 33 GOP lawmakers sent a letter of complaint asking for action against Sanchez, the newspaper reported.

“The political debate is divisive enough in this country and this state without unwarranted accusations of racism being thrown about without evidence,” said the letter addressed to Santa Fe Archbishop John Wester. “The fact that this accusation was levied [sic] by a representative of the Catholic Church only makes it more troubling.”

“As leader of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe do you condone this type of political debate?” lawmakers asked Wester. “Are you comfortable with the Catholic Church being represented in this manner? Does the Church wish to set the example that the political ends justify the rhetorical means?”

They’re also the same folks who want the Johnson Amendment repealed so pastors can talk about politics directly to their parishioners.

As long as they’re the “right” pastors, of course.

In the meantime, Paul Ryan had the Capitol Police drag out a group of Muslim women at his office calling him out to stop Trump from sabotaging DACA. Because Republican politicians only represent Republicans. (At least my representative is honest enough to say it out loud.)

Included in the bunch was Linda Sarsour.

Redress of grievances against the government, another right that conservatism has never supported in this country. I will dance a little jig of sorrow if Paul Ryan’s career is ended by Randy Bryce.

I’m convinced that that is the center of this all, his finances and the misrepresentation of his “wealth.” That he is so overleveraged that if the Russians or their intermediaries ever called in his debts, his little “empire” would crumble and he’d be out on his ass. I’d even argue there’s a psychological element to it, that he’s afraid of looking like a failure and so is desperate to keep the illusion of wealth surrounding him until he dies.

His supporters include the religious right, who are the fucking hypocrites who talk about family values all while Trump was cheating on his 3d wife with multiple women, including porn stars (just months after Barron was born). The womanizing sex predator is the family values candidate.

That’s not surprising given that child molesting Roy Moore was also a family values candidate, which makes one wonder what family values these fuckers are all about.

I am convinced that corrupt Russian influence is pervasive throughout right wing America and extends down to the state and local level. Russian support for the crackpot Texas secession “movement” is proven and just happened to coincide with a massive upsurge in local GOP support for the idea. Just coincidence I’m sure. Certain televangelists are almost embarrassing in their sycophantic support of Putin and the Moscow party line. Russians own the conspiracy industry. The Trump campaign’s collusion with Russian interests is just part of a much larger patter of subversion, one that pre-dates Trump’s candidacy by several years. It is the most important part, to be sure, but I don’t want us to lose sight of the forest just because there is a big tree in the way.

The religious right never gave a crap about sexual issues when a Republican does them (Denny Hastert, Newt Gingrich, &c). It’s about gaining and maintaining power, not “family values.”

Note how much conservative religious people dragged Hillary Clinton over what her hub did, demanding she leave him, &c. (Another conservative lie: They care about divorce.)

Cohen’s broken half a dozen rules of professional conduct with his actions just regarding Daniels.

Rule 4.1 - false statements of fact to third persons.
Rule 8.4 - Misconduct:
1- engage in illegal conduct that adversely reflects on the lawyer’s honesty, trustworthiness or fitness as a lawyer;
2 - engage in conduct involving dishonesty,fraud,deceit or misrepresentation;
3 - engage in conduct that is prejudicial to the administration of justice
4 - engage in any other conduct that adversely reflects on the lawyer’s fitness as a lawyer

That’s just off the top of my head. Any of those is an offense that can result in getting disbarred. That it may also be a bribe raises the stakes for him.

That it could be a campaign finance violation raises the stakes for him and Trump.

Cohen might be in trouble, but for Trump, it would require conservatives be willing to give up power in exchange for the rule of law.

Giving up power is not a tenet of conservatism, it never has been.

I expect them to stay to script: “This is troubling and we’re concerned, but we must allow for the investigation to finish before we take any action.”

Why? Because they expect any investigations that don’t drag out past November to be spun as “politically motivated.”

Good Cold Morning!

A small victory for mankind and a defeat for White Nationalists.

Richard Spencer’s lawyer announced they are dropping the law suit against Ohio State University for not allowing him a venue to spread his BS on campus.

Yay! Hopefully that sets a bit of precedent for other colleges, etc. to put up the same fight. Sadly, they appear to want to keep fighting to speak at the University of Cincinnati. Hopefully UC keeps fighting and wins their too.

White Nationalists Off Earth Now! (Hat tip to The Cowboy Junkies)

OSU Student Paper The Lantern - White supremacist Richard Spencer to drop lawsuit against Ohio State

Lawyers representing white supremacist Richard Spencer have dropped a lawsuit filed against Ohio State for denying multiple requests to use campus space for a speaking event.

According to the Associated Press, Spencer’s new attorney — his previous attorney Kyle Bristow resigned last week amid surfacing of his insensitive comments about transgender people — plans to drop the suit against Ohio State.

Bristow filed the lawsuit against Ohio State on Oct. 22 for Cameron Padgett, a Georgia State University student who made the requests for Spencer to speak on campus.

Spencer, who has been touring college campuses this year for hosting racist speaking events, was denied three times from speaking at Ohio State.

The university denied the requests to allot Spencer space on the grounds of its University Space Rules, according to court documents.

Ohio State asserted the “use of University property must not, in any form, disrupt University business,” and “the University may limit access to or use of its space as may be necessary to provide for the orderly conduct of the University’s teaching, research, and service missions, the University’s administrative functions, and students’ campus-life activities.”

Additionally, the university stated in the court document that allowing Spencer to speak on campus could pose a “substantial risk to public safety, as well as material and substantial disruption to the work and discipline of the University.”

The university said the concerns are rooted in objective evidence stemming from previous speaking events Spencer has participated in, such as the white supremacist rally “Unite the Right,” which took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August and left a counter protester dead.

Additionally, the document lists the myriad resources required for the University of Florida to host Spencer in October, including a governor-declared state of emergency, 800 armed law enforcement officers on campus, and a security price tag of over $500,000.

Padgett, who has also sought to have Spencer speak at multiple educational institutions, was quoted in the Miami Herald as saying “I don’t want to get killed on campus” as the reason he has not invited Spencer to his own campus, a fact highlighted in a court document Ohio State filed in December in response to the suit.

Kolenich told the AP that litigation will continue against the University of Cincinnati to allow Spencer to speak on campus.

Jimmy Carter, Barack Obama, and Hillary Clinton are “no true Christians” because they are not the “right” Christians. GHW Bush, GW Bush, and Donald Trump are “true Christians.”

So no true Christian would deny Trump, because Trump is forgiven. Certain Christian pastors said it, conservative voters believe it, that settles it.

Thanks for posting! You got me curious about the song and the context, so I did a little googling about the song and singer.

The song is translated by Google as Night Incense by the Japanese singer Yamaguchi Suzuko.

From what I could find, her family were Japanese settlers in Japanese occupied China. Her story is an interesting thread about managing a period of racism (Japanese against Chinese, later Chinese against Japanese, as well as Western against Asian), war, revolution and economic distress.

Fluent in both Japanese and Mandarin, so she also went by the Chinese stage name of Li Xianglan. After World War 2 she acted in Hollywood and Broadway as Shirley Yamaguchi.

World keeps getting weirder, man…

Principal photography is now underway in Alabama on the thriller “Moose,” starring John Travolta with Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst directing for Ambi Media Group.

Based on events from Durst’s own life, “Moose” was written by Durst with Dave Bekerman. Travolta is playing the title character, a rabid movie fan obsessed with his favorite celebrity action hero, portrayed by Devon Sawa. As Moose’s obsession grows stronger, his fixation turns from stalking to ambition of destroying the star’s life — a story inspired by a real-life fan who stalked Durst many years ago.

Your morning EWWW:

Yes, Those Are Probably Bugs In Your Paprika. Here’s What To Do. (Goes to Huffington Post)

Tobacco beetles and drugstore beetles just lurve themselves spices made from pepper varieties (which includes paprika, but also cayenne, red pepper flakes, &c).

HP interviewed a woman from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln who is a bit too excited about bugs in spices, how they get there (usually from inside your home, and the beetles in question can chew through sheet steel to get to the spices), and how to store them to avoid infestation. (Hint #1: Don’t buy in bulk, Hint #2: Put your spices in the freezer for four days at 0F or below).

With video of moving paprika, caused by said beetles. (The beetles are very tiny.)

What may matter more is what Carter was able to accomplish when he was in office. Even his most ardent admirers would be hard put to place him in the top echelon of presidents. But when it comes to gay rights, Carter deserves a fair amount of credit. He was really the first president to take positive (and concrete) steps to acknowledge the importance of gay rights.

During his administration, the Foreign Service lifted its ban on gay and lesbian personnel and the Internal Revenue Service lifted its requirement that any LGBT nonprofit state that homosexuality was “a diseased pathology.”

His administration was also the first to invite gay activists to the White House, at the height of the Anita Bryant fear-mongering. The move was controversial and ultimately contributed to Midge Constanza, the official who issued the invitation, deciding to step down. But Carter didn’t quash the meeting either, which would have been the politically easy thing to do.

The evil too big to fail bank (Wells Fargo) just sent an internal memo from Tim Sloan to employees, basically saying that we are not going to do anything about guns, because this is something the legislatures should handle. Oh and some of our clients are gun shops, manufacturers, etc.

I’m tempted to shoot back an email to Sloan pointing out that Republican-dominated legislatures are bought and paid-for subsidiaries of the NRA, but I like my job. I would like this news to get out somehow.

Oh, and this from Bloomberg, which probably provoked today’s memo:

bloomberg.com

Well…the bank does go back to the ol’ west stagecoach days. And they needed those guns to fight off the hordes of robbers…so…

Did Carter advocate for any legislation effecting LGBT people as President? But fair enough. I have great regard for Carter as a man and Christian.

from wikipedia

Carter was the first president to address the topic of gay rights. He opposed the Briggs Initiative, a California ballot measure that would have banned gays and supporters of gay rights from being public school teachers. His administration was the first to meet with a group of gay rights activists. He has stated that he “opposes all forms of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and believes there should be equal protection under the law for people who differ in sexual orientation”.

Conservatives are going to be in a bind over this. They think bakeries can deny LGBT people services but they’re going to cheer this on. Honestly, I think Dicks should have just decided to refuse to sell guns anymore period to make this easier to litigate.

They’re not going to be in a bind. They’re going to declare that one’s a “right” (buying a semi-auto rifle) and the other’s a “privilege” (buying a wedding cake). And then go further by saying in the latter case, the gay couple is actually infringing on the owner’s “right” by demanding they violate their “deeply held religious beliefs.”

Thanks and I saw also through AM that he got a ban lifted on LGBT individuals serving in the foreign service which was huge considering the Pink Scare of just 20 years prior to his presidency. So I stand corrected and I thank you both for setting the record straight with me. Not surprisingly both Carter and Obama are loathed by the RR.

Here in Western NC, the stinkbug invasion has become more prevalent. We have a wooded area near our screened in porch at the back of the house, meaning that each fall the parade of stinkbugs begins. And over the next few weeks, the stinkeroos will make their exodus from the crevices in our house.

Ultra-pasteurized milk is still via heat treatment and as such, engenders less paranoia.

The food safety organization of countries in SE Asia and China and Japan have patchwork laws permitting food irradiation. They are working on getting more standards in place and are trying to determine if they can harmonize with US laws and how the US approaches the safety and suitability of food irradiation.

Bottom line is, every country (especially the disparate rules and law in the EU) has their own little peccadilloes, fears, and qualms about food irradiation. But, the WTO makes is nudging governments and their food safety laws generally towards a similar endpoint over the long term.

Rattlesnake pills (basically ground-up rattlesnakes put in capsules and sold as a “cancer cure” - yeah, it doesn’t work) have once again been detected with Salmonella in them… .

If the food poisoning kills you, well you didn’t die of cancer.

Snake-Based Medicine? Another Salmonella Infection Linked to Rattlesnake Pills Goes to the Website Science-Based Medicine (more at the link):

What brought the practice of ingesting rattlesnake for medicinal purposes to my attention was a recent CDC warning. The CDC report discusses a case in Kansas of a non-fatal human infection with Salmonella believed to be linked to Mexican rattlesnake pills. Using whole genome sequencing, the CDC found that the Salmonella in this case was identical to Salmonella cultured from Mexican rattlesnake pills confiscated in an earlier investigation.

This isn’t the first time that rattlesnake pills have been linked to human infection. In fact, there are several reported cases, specifically involving various non-typhoidal strains of Salmonella, but other types of bacteria have been implicated. One prior case, reported back in 2007, involved a child with an immune-compromising autoimmune condition. This case involved a child with leukemia. That particular child survived, but not all cases have had good outcomes.

Age discrimination usually applies to elderly but not young (which is why there are apartment houses who refuse to rent to people with children - one I lived in when I was stationed in Jacksonville tried to eject me and my wife when my son was born), rental car companies, &c.

No shoes, shirt, &c are often health code regulations or state law.

The Stonewall Riots were only seven years earlier.

Hell, the UpStairs Lounge fire was in 1973, though on that one, it seems that homophobic hatred was not the motivating factor. The tragedy in that horror was that many relatives of the deceased refused to claim the remains of the victims amongst other homophobic ugliness.

I know. I’m not knocking him for that. Sag just said that Carter was the first President to advocate for LGBT Americans and it seems to his credit he did by opposing the Briggs initiative (banning of openly gay individuals teaching in schools) and by allowing LGBT people to serve in the foreign service. We’ve come a long way.

Oh I wasn’t saying you were knocking him, just trying to put the timeline in perspective.

I’ll use myself as an example. In 1969 I had my first job (outside of painting signs and posters and windows for local businesses) at The Book Store. It was owned and operated by one of my hometown’s first recognized homosexuals (keep the use of the word in context of the times). Why was he recognized by my mid-sized city? Sometime in the early 60s he was caught up in a police round up of local gay men in one of the city parks. He was infamous.

I got the job when a good friend who worked there took another job and recommended me. My parents were a little leery of it, as they knew the reputation of the owner, but I was like “who cares.” I was pretty naive at 15 when it came to such things. What do you expect of a Catholic Schooled kid.

I found the owner to be a good guy and he never did anything untoward to me, or my friend, that lived up to his reputation. He was arty and into literature, etc. I learned a lot about the business and I did all the stocking, and much of the creative stuff like lettering and gold foil embossing invitations and napkins for big dinners, etc. I was already on my path as an artist.

It was the best education. It showed me how much of the whole “scary homosexuals” was bullshit and they were just regular people too.

Then in 1972 I went to the Columbus College of Art & Design and some of my best friends that first year were gay. Not a one ever was more than a friend and that too taught me so much.

Added in was the music of the day, David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust, Lou Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side”, Brian Eno and Roxy Music… and that all added to the big changes going on. At art college we actually in a way celebrated their gayness and made it part of the art world.

Then came Reagan and the big push was on.

Interesting. It also sort of shows why things like Massachusetts being gerrymandered for democrats isn’t actually true. There’s nothing in the state beyond a slightly reddish purple. It would be almost impossible to carve out a consistently Republican Congressional district from the state. You would need a system that allocates seats based on statewide totals.

The point isn’t to convince us. Conservatism is a religion. It is taken on faith. When faith waivers, you must feed the faithful with something that will help them shore up their faith, whether it is true or no.

This is for the consumption of conservatives, to convince them that there is something shady about the investigation.

Many studies have shown that people will dig in when challenged with information that opposes their opinions. This is part of that: It is to give the conservative religious another argument (whether true or no) to oppose what is in opposition to their religious faith (the FBI is working on Clinton’s behalf to tear up Trump and the GOP in general).

It would be almost impossible to carve out a consistently Republican Congressional district from the state. You would need a system that allocates seats based on statewide totals.

That could be done. Candidates run from all parties, and they get statewide seats based on the percentages of votes each party gets. The biggest vote-getters of each party gets the seats awarded proportionally. (In my state, that would likely yield at least one Democratic representative.)

I’m not sure how that would work re: the Constitution. States determine their districts; I presume the state in question could just declare the whole state to be all the districts and the winners the ones who get the most votes. (That would certainly break the red state lock on so many states, and would likely improve GOP representation in blue states.)

I am sorry you have to think about such things. No teacher should have to think about anything other than the best ways to present their lessons to their students.

I despise the NRA and their bought-and-paid for politicians.

My brother-in-law is seriously considering retiring from teaching this year … he is also concerned about school shootings, and figures Texas will try to do the “teacher carry” nonsense.

As an aside, this helps the conservatives destroy public schools. Drive out the good teachers, the schools fail, then “see, government can’t do anything, privatise the schools, profit.”

1. It’s uncertain whether acupuncture is complete woo. (At least regarding pain relief. The healing promotion claims are almost certainly BS) The results of studies have been mixed. Some show relief of pain, some show no statistical improvement over the use of a sham technique. The major issue is that that study cohorts have been too small.
2. The military has a massive drug addiction problem which stems from stuffing injured and recovering soldiers full of opiates. This is shitty both for the soldiers who become addicts and for national security.
3. Worst case: A few years down the line we establish it doesn’t actually work beyond the placebo effect and we end the program. Most soldiers ended up just taking the drugs because it didn’t work and a handful of soldiers miss out on a lifetime battling opioid addiction courtesy of the placebo effect. The US tax payer is out the equivalent of the detailing on the latest military procurement fuckup.
Best Case: We establish that acupuncture does work, at least for some segment of the population and we have a tool to keep some soldiers off opiates.

Absolutely correct. There were enough progressives who believed Cheeto Benito (despite his manifest awfulness) was preferable to HRC simply for TPP opposition (they didn’t believe hers was genuine) and avoiding WWIII with Russia (they were convinced she’d start it due to wanting no-fly zone in Syria).

Putin propaganda bots totally seized on that, and it made a huge difference in the most crucial swing states :/

Yup. Military and police, that’s sort of the job. You expect that you might get shot at in the course of your duties, and you train every day for that eventuality.

The point of a military force and a police force is so the rest of the populace doesn’t have to do those things.

While I was never in real danger in the Navy (except a couple of potential issues), I volunteered for that, and part of that is so that others can go about their business secure in the knowledge there were professionals to keep them safe.

Are the way the police and military employed always beneficial for our society? No. But we have politicians who are elected to fix that, to employ protocols and procedures and diplomacy so they are not misused in the future. Society is a learning curve.

Conclusion:

Acupuncture is effective for the treatment of chronic pain and is therefore a reasonable referral option. Significant differences between true and sham acupuncture indicate that acupuncture is more than a placebo. However, these differences are relatively modest, suggesting that factors in addition to the specific effects of needling are important contributors to the therapeutic effects of acupuncture.

I admire James Hetfield’s sobriety, helped me get sober. I was a little bit taken aback by this announcement:

Well-known Kentucky bourbon distiller is teaming up with Metallica

Legendary heavy-metal band Metallica is teaming up with Dave Pickerell, former master distiller at Maker’s Mark, on a whiskey line — and possibly a small distillery.

Pickerell told WhiskeyCast about the project in a story published last week. The band’s San Francisco hometown seems to be the front runner site for a distillery, but Pickerell also mentions Louisville and Nashville as possible locations.

“San Francisco (is) the home of Metallica, Louisville (is) the home of bourbon, and Nashville (is) the home of music, so one of those three seems to make sense,” Pickerell told the publication. “I’m voting for San Francisco and the Bay Area if nothing falls apart.”

Nope…linked within the article:

Link

I found it. I did not see the link.

It is not a study. It is a meta-analysis of studies.

From the conclusion of that analysis, the lede:

We believe that our findings are both clinically and scientifically important. They suggest that the total effects of acupuncture, as experienced by the patient in routine clinical practice, are clinically relevant, but that an important part of these total effects is not due to issues considered to be crucial by most acupuncturists, such as the correct location of points and depth of needling. Several lines of argument suggest that acupuncture (whether real or sham) is associated with more potent placebo or context effects than other interventions.

Emphasis in the summary mine.

Theatrical placebo. Doesn’t matter where you put the needle.

I suppose that I could boil up and sterilise my own needles, hang my shingle out, and go to work. According to the meta-analysis (not study), 50% of people reported improvement in pain. (That’s pretty low.) Doesn’t matter whether my “boil my own needles” method is effective or no, I get paid (and acupuncture is very expensive).

Moreover, there are no acupuncturists within a couple hundred miles of here. If I was unethical, I could take my state’s required courses, get my FREE license after sitting an “acupuncture examination” (whatever the hell that is), and I’m set. (No continuing education required to maintain the license.)

Or I could sell placebo pills (since the meta-analysis notes that’s the principal effect of acupuncture) and I don’t even need a license.

By comparison, I have to sit nearly the same number of hours for a Public Water System Operator, the license is $150 every year, and I have to go through continuing education which costs way more than that every year.

Forgive me if I view acupuncture as quackery. There’s a reason it’s called “alternative medicine” (it’s not medicine).

re: #203 Anymouse 🌹

We have enough dingbats on the GOP side of the aisle, we don’t need them on ours. (Still railing on science-based medicine here.)

A whole pile of money was shoveled at the VA to study acupuncture for treating pain in lieu of medication or other proven methods of medicine.

Rep Judy Chu (D-CA27) introduced a bill called the “Acupuncture for Our Heroes Act” to require all VA medical facilities to provide acupuncture for pain.

Rep. Chu claims “discrimination against traditional Asian methods of medicine.”

Screw that. Like the rattlesnake pills above (which are traditional Mexican medicine), we don’t call proven medicine that works “traditional medicine” or “alternative medicine.” We call it “medicine.”

I do not want to be forced by the government to use quackery paid for by tax money for my benefits.

Fortunately, since the bill was introduced by a Democrat, the GOP won’t move the bill. It was introduced last year, and still sits without action.

congress.gov (bill sponsor and text)

Sorry to have to join the pile-on, ‘mouse, but acupuncture - if (like any form of medicine) properly administered by a careful and competent professional, is far from being mere “quackery”. Of course, its benefits have been overhyped, and it’s far from the cure-all its more-enthusiastic proponents like to claim, but if used correctly, CAN be of use in many situations: pain-management among them. It all depends on the individual case. And of course, the abilities (and ethics) of the practitioner.

Comments from personal experience: my wife is chronic-pain patient; and, many years ago, sought help from an acupuncturist acquaintance - a very well-regarded pro - for her various pains. She (my wife) had many sessions with the practitioner - without much success, whereupon she (the acupuncturist) suggested that seeking “regular” medical advice would be more productive. It wasn’t, but that wasn’t anybody’s fault.

Yeah, there has been a great deal of woo-woo about acupuncture bandied about, but if it helps even a few vets deal with pain issues without the use of serious drugs, it’s well worth the VA covering it.
However, FWIW, I think Rep. Chu’s griping about “discrimination” is overdone.

Of course my experience is anecdotal, ignorable.
At the time, with discussion with my real MD guy the theory in my case was this. The warm needles reduced my pain, and a body responds quite well to a reduction in pain. That is to say the effects of chronic or high level pain is pretty well documented. Straight empirical. Real world medicine. Science? Nope. worthwhile and in my case acupuncture was less costly than what an MD would charge for a visit and perhaps injection. BTW none of my injuries were more than contusions, sprains etc. If I suspected anything like that I saw an MD first of course.

Might be a warm bath and careful massage would have been as good for me after a tough fight. I tried it all short of Percocet etc. But I still go after doing all the reading.

How many millions of dollars do you wish to spend to help “a few vets” as opposed to methods already proven to work in multiple studies over decades? The government already put $20M into this to see if acupuncture could be administered in VA hospitals (not to actually give acupuncture) back in 2014.

And no amount of anecdotal evidence amounts to “data.” Controlled scientific studies amount to data. Put those results up against already-used methods, then see if that procedure is worth taking money away from veteran health care for.

When I was stationed in Virginia Beach, chiropractors convinced conservatives in the government to spend millions of dollars to push their quack theories on active duty. An entire wing of the Portsmouth Naval Hospital was given over to a chiropractic clinic to operate for years. It was finally shut down after it was shown to be quackery (but only after we got rid of the people in Congress pushing for the idea).

“Significant differences between true and sham acupuncture indicate that acupuncture is more than a placebo.”

And by the way, whether you deem acupuncture to have therapeutic effects or not, one thing is clear is that you don’t understand acupuncture licensing in most states or the training involved.

Lastly, I’d point out that a lot of people use acupuncture as a method of last resort, because they have a lot of pain, and don’t want to use heavy duty pain meds or even OTC stuff or maybe don’t want surgery, and want a non drug-related way to manage pain. So even if it’s only 50% of people that see results, it’s still worth it.

As noted up the thread about other issues, when presented with information that is contradictory to a person’s already-convinced position, they will double-down.

I am sorry, no amount of anecdotes amounts to evidence. Properly-contrived studies amount to evidence. The evidence is not there, no matter if “acupuncture helped my mother-in-law’s sister’s dog.”

Of note, a researcher in Missouri developed a “fake acupuncture needle” which simulates a real needle but does nothing, to use in controlled trials of acupuncture.

You would be amazed that no one who promotes acupuncture wishes to submit to such a trial.

I’m going to bail on this. They make me use acupuncture, I’ll sue. We’ll see what happens.

Mr. Weissman may have “left” the Trump cult, but from that linked article, he hasn’t really gone very far. Despite the attacks he received from questioning the in-cult dogma, he still feels obligated to close with an expression of support for President Trump. And the strawman caricatures…

In fair argument, I will acknowledge that this extremism exists on both sides. I have attempted and failed to have reasonable discussions with many self-proclaimed liberals who worship Hillary or Obama as well, and that frenzied look in their eyes is always the same.

.

“Worship”? “Frenzied look”?? WTH is this guy talking to? I mean, it’s nice to see a Jewish Trumpoid finally seeing through the dismissive antisemitism that lies at the heart of so much of the “MAGA” cult,
but I have a feeling David Weissman would probably vote for Trump again, should he have the opportunity. And then make up some new set of excuses.

‘mouse, you are certainly allowed your own thinking regarding acupuncture, but just like your stance on religion, you get into this big having to prove it thing and it just gets to be too much. I have no problem with criticism and references to prove a point. But when it becomes a mission to prove others wrong it can be self defeating.

And I have never had acupuncture. Probably never will.

Education is fine, but if someone is going to hold to their own thoughts on an issue trying to prove them wrong is going to close a door and stop all further thoughts. At that point you change nothing.

Moderation in debate is always a good thing. Having a feel for when you are getting close to crossing the line of turning them off is an important thing.

Issa claims that California is so crime ridden that it’s exporting its crime to neighboring states…. except that’s not exactly the case.

California borders: Nevada, Arizona, and Oregon.

From 2016, this is the crime rate per 100,000 residents:
Nevada 678
Arizona 470
California 445
Oregon 264

Kinda puts a dent in the con artist’s story.

Speaking of bears, it’s been a while since we caught up with Bryan Fischer.

He’s busy trying to dissemble that gun violence has everything to do with liberals and has nothing to do with easy access to guns.

Let’s just ignore that the FL shooter was a goddamned Nazi who targeted former schoolmates with a gun no civilian should be able to buy and which serves no purpose except to kill large numbers of people in as short a time as possible.

my two cents re acupuncture is that both of these things can be true at the same time - and right now, likely are

personal experience informs what some think they know - they have gotten relief and that’s fine. and it is real and true.

and

even with all its history, acupuncture has not achieved the status of double blind scientific efficacy necessary to be called medicine or (loosely) science. whether it could, or might, it hasn’t.

the (ahem) danger, if there is one is a governmental body - say the VA, granting it a position it does not currently merit. and with that, either diverting funds and attention from known protocols and/or possibly directing and sanctioning its widerspread use where there is no medical or scientific basis to do so

i do not disbelieve or dispute any one’s individual experience

imo, to make policy, it must first meet the same standards as the rest of medical science

Among the other issues plaguing this country, the move towards rejecting evidence- and science-based medicine and embracing “alt” and “eastern” ones is another disaster in the making.

Got together with the family on Sunday. Sister is a teacher, and I’m pretty sure sister-in-law is a closet Trump supporter (who’s worked for the feds for over 20 years).

While everybody was complaining how the current school safety situation was deplorable, overtime I brought up banning AR-15s and other assault weapons, I was told to change the subject, or that it can’t be done.

Absolutely amazing. My brother-in-law, while far from a slobbering right winger, unconsciously kept parroting Marco Rubio: too many guns out there to do anything; or the ol’ “If we ban that one, this other gun can be modified like the former, so therefore do nothing.”

It’s incredible how even people like my sis, who is horrified by every idiot GOP proposal, just shuts down when it comes to banning weapons. At one point, she mentioned some schools either proposed having or actually have a bucket of tennis balls for the kids to chuck at a potential gunman.

Yet when I propose reinstating the Assault Weapon Ban, I’m the one who’s nuts. Un-fucking-believable.

Not really.

People keep voting them in because they’re too stupid/lazy to research the fact the GOP keeps fucking them over.

Look at the new tax bill: it will balloon the deficit to record numbers and has a pissant middle class tax cut that expires, while granting rich people permanent cuts.

And, not that you voted for him, but look at your governor: Kasich’s just as vicious as Trump, but comes off as “rational” because he’s not an obvious mental case.

Shit, look at NJ’s last governor: Christie got tons of support from law enforcement, and he utterly fucked them over on their pensions. Yet just about every cop I know is a hard core Republican.

Honestly, the GOP is not going away because Americans are too fucking stupid to see them for what they are. We have a President who is on tape admitting to sexual assault; if that wasn’t enough for these morons, nothing will ever be.

Listening to a piece on NPR last Sunday; a solar energy expert was talking about the cost difference between US and Australia. The US permitting process is so outdated it treats home solar as a large power generation facility, with all the red tape appropriate for such, adding $10,000 or so to what (in Australia) is $6000 cost to power a residence. This deliberate foot-dragging by our fossil-fuel-paid politicians will keep us trailing the rest of the world.

Ok, found the immigration complaint, this is incredibly interesting: there are two provisions of the California law that basically say that employers cannot allow access to non-public areas of the workplace or to employment records to immigration officials without a valid warrant. On employment records, that makes obvious sense - there are privacy rights at stake. I’m less sure about the non-public areas bit, but as a general rule you really shouldn’t give access to any law enforcement agency without a warrant. The DOJ claims that employers voluntarily comply with inspections but provide no actual information on how many do and how many don’t and if there is any threat of legal action if employers don’t (which means it’s not really voluntary).

They also apparently don’t like the fact that the new law allows the state AG to inspect detention facilities housing undocumented immigrants.

This is going to be a fascinating case regarding federalism.

That sounds like indentured servitude, which last I checked, is illegal. The companies should be fined out of existence, the officers imprisoned, and the land sold to the highest bidder to pay the workers.

If acupuncture makes one feel good, that’s fine. But it’s not a medical treatment. There’s no evidence for bodily meridians, or qi, for that matter. It’s a placebo.

Among the other issues plaguing this country, the move towards rejecting evidence- and science-based medicine and embracing “alt” and “eastern” ones is another disaster in the making.

I would think companies would be in control of who accesses their private property, but then IANAL. I can see protecting them from demands to let ICE do things, and I can’t imagine a company wanting to let them poke around in the back room, but making it illegal seems problematic.

The Stormy Daniels case is not about Trump having an affair with a porn star shortly after his new son was born. It is about the violation of federal campaign finance laws. Important not to lose site of that. Not sleaze. Corruption.

Yes, but the only counter-spin on such a story is to compare it with Clinton/Paula Jones/Jennifer Flowers, etc., and dismiss it, quietly overlooking the fact that they impeached Clinton over a consensual BJ.

A Fox host explains the Civil War: “When you look at the Civil War and what it was about, the way I understand it, it was about the federal government saying this, and states saying yes to that.”

This is the ultimate victory of Civil War revisionism: from “Slavery was not the only cause of the Civil War” to “Slavery had nothing to do with the Civil War.”

And as we as a nation grow stupider and less historically literate, that talking point will become the standard point of view .

California has a motor/voter law to encourage (not require-it’s opt-out, though) people to register to vote.
California issues drivers’ licenses to the undocumented. It does not encourage them to register to vote, although just like anywhere else, they could theoretically register. It would be illegal for them to do so.

if one tried to register to vote AND IF they didn’t verify their eligibility, one could be registered (whether one actually voted….)
