Really tired of how this man and his followers jealously lash out when anything other than their socialist messaging finds daylight.

I don’t think it’s that specific.

Bernie is just upset he can’t generate the headlines that Trump can.

It is clear that Russia owns Bernie. It is one thing to claim Stormy Daniels is a distraction but his total lack of concern about Russia shows that he is as tied to Putin as Trump. I won’t support any organization that supports Bernie.

And Russia is a problem. Wealth inequality can’t be focused on if the President and his party are indebted to Putin. Not to mention not everything is related to wealth inequality goddamnit.

Not getting much headlines outside of Utah because, well, Trump sucks all the room out of headline space, but the former leader of the Mormon training center accused of sexual abuse of trainees:

Former Missionary Training Center President accused of sexual assault

To say the least, the response from the Mormon Church proper: Church Statement About Alleged Sexual Assault by Former Mission President

… is leaving some people fuming: A Response to the LDS Newsroom’s Statement on Sexual Abuse in the MTC

As they point out, there is an audiotape of the man in question where he appear to implicate himself for misconduct: MormonLeaksTM Releases Audio of Former Mormon Mission President Admitting to Inappropriate Interactions with Women

Where this will all end I don’t know… but it seems to me that the political opportunists like Bernie are missing the boat by fixating on monetary issues when such fundamental abuses of rights and people are taking headlines.

If my Facebook timeline was any indication, and perhaps it wasn’t, but the Trumpers who showed up were already wingnuts, gun-lovers, and Je$u$ marks before the campaign got in earnest, and they still are today.

Let’s be honest about this: our (American) wingnuts are the product of our backwards society.

Economic inequality is an important issue for certain but it’s not the only one and Sanders does nothing but aid Putin and Trump by deeming it a distraction. He’s almost become Corbyn to me.

It’s not an either/or situation.

The same hubris and power that allows Trump to buy sex at will and then force NDAs on these women is the same hubris and power that the rest of his rich friends use on the rest of society.

That Bernie doesn’t want to see that simply tells me Bernie is too old for the job of leading the charge for change in society. He’s out of touch.

It has become a quasi-religious article of faith amongst the Purity Troll Progressives that the only way to reach the disaffected white working class is to talk about “kitchen table issues.”

Of course, this utterly ignores the fact that elections for the past 40 years have demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that the American electorate can be convinced to cut their own economic throats (long-term, as long as they don’t feel it immediately) when the political messaging is directed at gut-level emotions.

It’s the leftie side of the Libertarian coin; where everything is about $$ and if you just take care of that one thing, everything else will sort itself out.

goddamnedfrank  Mar 20, 2018 • 10:06:46pm

Wait, WHAT?

German researchers have discovered unknown persons are using bitcoin’s blockchain to store and link to child abuse imagery, potentially putting the cryptocurrency in jeopardy.

The blockchain is the open-source, distributed ledger that records every bitcoin transaction, but can also store small bits of non-financial data. This data is typically notes about the trade of bitcoin, recording what it was for or other metadata. But it can also be used to store links and files.

Researchers from the RWTH Aachen University, Germany found that around 1,600 files were currently stored in bitcoin’s blockchain. Of the files least eight were of sexual content, including one thought to be an image of child abuse and two that contain 274 links to child abuse content, 142 of which link to dark web services.

“Our analysis shows that certain content, eg, illegal pornography, can render the mere possession of a blockchain illegal,” the researchers wrote. “Although court rulings do not yet exist, legislative texts from countries such as Germany, the UK, or the USA suggest that illegal content such as [child abuse imagery] can make the blockchain illegal to possess for all users.”

It may be worse than that. He and the movement around him have gotten high on their own supply. Yes, I agree that the concentration of wealth in the hands of the .01% is one of the most corrosive forces in our society. But you are not going to motivate people to go out to the polls and pull the big “D” lever with a bloodless technocratic message of restoring the capital gains tax and closing corporate loopholes.

It’s just to abstruse. Like it or not, we now live in Idiocracy, and this kind of political messaging just sounds like “Blah blah blah eat your vegetables and do your homework” to the voters they hope to reach.

It’s like the stories I heard from an old Berkeley radical about the disconnect between the earnest, naive hippies in the late 60s, and the blue-collar factory workers they thought would be sympathetic to them. The longhaired peace-sign-waving intellectuals thought they could rally “the proletariat” behind their slogans.

Turned out: not so much.

I certainly don’t need to be convinced of this, by nature of being a black woman in America. Your FB timeline was likely very indicative.

That being said, there are associations, tactics and financial transactions that deserve intense scrutiny. I am quite certain laws were broken. Even if I feel the weight of historical unpursued justice at play, I can’t ignore this. We gotta look and try to right some wrongs no matter how unlikely I feel that is on certain days.

Is someone getting fired Friday?

“… Wray told NBC News senior justice correspondent Pete Williams in an interview excerpt broadcast on “Nightly News” that he does not feel any political pressure from the White House.

Pressed on whether President Trump has asked the FBI chief to say anything, Wray responded, “He’s never asked me to do anything with the Russian investigation.” …”

Which might be more or less technically true given…

“… Asked if he was saying that media reports he had threatened to resign were wrong, Wray demurred, saying he was “not going to talk about specific conversations.”

Axios reported earlier this year that Attorney General Jeff Sessions pressured Wray to fire then-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe but Wray threatened to resign if McCabe was removed.

White House counsel Don McGahn reportedly told Sessions that it wasn’t worth firing McCabe if it meant losing Wray. …”

So, maybe Trump has learned not to directly make demands of the FBI Director, but instead directs Sessions to apply pressure.

MARCH FOR OUR LIVES PLANS LUBBOCK PROTEST ON SATURDAY

A nation-wide protest is in the works for Saturday March 24 and a local chapter is planning a protest in Lubbock.

March for our Lives Lubbock will hold a protest Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Tim Cole statue located at 19th and University. The protest is in solidarity with other protests around the nation and a march being planned in Washington, D.C. on Saturday.

Local ammosexuals are naturally scoffing at this on Facebook. I told them to counter-protest the gun-grabbing pro-crime Islamo-Bolsheviks, perhaps by burning a strawman in effigy.

Judge rules defamation case against Trump may proceed

A New York judge said Tuesday that a defamation lawsuit against President Trump related to an allegation that he sexually harassed a former “Apprentice” contestant may go forward.

Summer Zervos filed the suit last year after Trump said publicly during the 2016 presidential campaign that she and other women accusing him of unwanted sexual contact were making up their claims. Trump sought to block the legal action, but New York Supreme Court Judge Jennifer G. Schecter — citing court precedent that ultimately led to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998 — said that “a sitting president is not immune from being sued in federal court for unofficial acts.”

The ruling came the same day that Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model, filed a lawsuit on the other side of the country against American Media, owner of the National Enquirer, seeking to be released from a contract she said paid her $150,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair with Trump.

It means that anyone who has downloaded the entire blockchain — including people running full nodes or the Bitcoin-qt wallet — now possess child pornography. That data cannot be erased from the blockchain without forking — creating a new Bitcoin — and starting a new blockchain from that point on.

Unintended consequences.

Someone asked if this problem would exist on other blockchains, and the answer is yes. Most blockchains permit messages to be sent with payments, or without payments for a small fee. IOW it’s possible to spam the blockchain if you’re willing to spend a little coin to do it.

It’s still the 5th highest grossing film of the year so that’s nothing to sneeze at. I think it’s in line with projections for the genre.
Nothing is really competing with Black Panther to be honest. It’s redefining the numbers and conventional wisdom.

Like clockwork, Trump’s up and rage tweeting again, and this time it’s a doozy.

Trump can’t spell Counsel correctly. He’s talking in 3d person. He’s talking about how Mueller was appointed to find crimes or not.

Trump doesn’t get that Mueller’s already found crimes.

He’s got 20 indictments with many more on the way. He hasn’t even gotten into the Trump family crimes yet. He’s still working on the outer circle. You work from the outside in, since lower level people roll on higher level people.

He’s got guilty pleas from Trump’s former NSA - Flynn. He’s got guilty pleas from former campaign manager Gates and foreign policy adviser Papadopoulos. Manafort is indicted on multiple charges.

Richard Pinedo pleaded guilty to an identity theft charge in connection with the Russian indictments, and has agreed to cooperate with Mueller.

Alex van der Zwaan pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Rick Gates and another unnamed person based in Ukraine.

Everywhere Mueller looks, he’s finding wrongdoing and criminality.

This will not end well for Trump.

Developing: Austin police say that the suspected domestic terrorist behind a slew of bombings in Austin died after a device blew up and police responded by firing on him.

The suspected serial bomber who terrorized Austin with a slew of exploding packages died early Wednesday after detonating an explosive device in his vehicle as police closed in on him, authorities said.

Austin police and the FBI tracked the 24-year-old male to a hotel parking lot in Round Rock, about 18 miles north of Austin, where they found him inside his vehicle, Interim Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said. Officers wanted to wait for tactical units to arrive before engaging the suspect, but he started to drive away.

The man stopped on the side of the Interstate 35 frontage road, and as Austin SWAT officers approached, the suspect detonated a bomb, knocking one of the officers backward and injuring him, Manley said.

A SWAT officer then fired at the suspect, who died inside the vehicle, the police chief said. It was unclear whether he died from the explosion or from gunfire. Manley said the suspect sustained “significant” injuries from the blast.

Bomber profile, complete with quotes from neighbors who didn’t suspect a thing:

As the sun rose, neighbors of the 23-year-old, who was home-schooled growing up and went to Austin Community College, struggled to wrap their minds around the news that he was the suspected bomber.

“I know this is a cliché but I just can’t imagine that,” said one neighbor, who spoke on the condition of anonymity and whose children grew up playing with Conditt on Pfluger Street. The neighbor described Conditt as a nice kid from a great family.

Police have said that Conditt was 24, although some public records indicate he was 23.

Conditt received a degree from Austin Community College’s Northridge Campus and had worked at Crux Semiconductor in Austin as a “purchasing Agent/buyer/shipping and receiving,” according to a profile on a job recruiting website. He previously worked as a computer repair technician.

There are very few public social media posts under his name.

It’s innate for someone like Rubio to try and find a way to deflect from the hard issue (confronting Trump) to a much easier one (complaining about a “leak”, though I suspect this leak may have been more than mere happenstance.)

Rubio folds in front of every confrontation. That’s what he did in the debates with Trump; no matter how boorish Trump was to him and the other candidates, Rubio never found a way to stand up to Trump effectively.

There is so much homeschooling going on and it is damaging this country. There I said it.

I am not sure how it is all judged by the state to be comprehensive and thorough. The education seems to be open to being limited and narrow many times with overly religious teachings and slim on science, civics, history and to me the biggie…social interaction with others you would have if you attend a classic school. Plus, if there is just a parent or parents teaching, their biases will weigh in with no other teachers and students to balance it.

Education made this country strong at one time. Our public schools and education standards for religious schools worked. Now we are allowing it all to come apart and this country is paying for it.

I know a few who aren’t particularly religious, but align with the anti-vax folks. It’s interesting to me that where I am now (NH) had laws from at least early 1700s that all communities were required to provide at least some schooling to community children. Yes, it had religious content, but the idea that the community needed to be literate had strongly taken root. Now an avowed home schooler is the commissioner of education, and he’s predictable well supported by a strong “voucher” constituency. No sense of common good or community responsibility.

That does appear to be the case, but I really don’t know. But the two groups you mention are a large problem because no one seems to be as limited in thinking than they are. And they are damn proud of it.

What gets me is how does the state allow that? Isn’t there some kind of testing that can show the limits to the students education?

Or does this fall under the old ‘raise your kids they way you see fit, everyone else butt out.’

That is dangerous for the collective of the country.

My best friend homeschools her children, one because he’s a genius and on the spectrum and was getting treated very poorly at school by his peers AND his teachers. She has done wonders with him. I always have seen public schools as the so called great equalizer. My moms folks were the children of immigrants and although their parents were all quite religious, they received a secular education. The PS system helped them assimilate and meet people of different backgrounds. Same thing for me later. If I had been Catholic school educated as my Dad was until seventh grade, I wouldn’t have met so many people.

Maybe not collapse the education system, but it sure throws a wrench in the gears of the society.

Thanks for the 3% figure, as I did now know the extent. I wonder if that is growing and will get larger? I am not sure how long homeschooling has actually been allowed. As a boomer I never heard about it much. It really has only been the past 20 years that I’ve heard more and more about it.

I just did a quick Google to see how many students there were in this country in 2017. The figure given was 50.7 million. 3% is 1.5 million. That is a lot of people with questionable educations and enough to cause big problems. IMO.

Not the only ones, though they are the largest component of the homeschooling movement. Keeps them undefiled by the “World” as the Gospel of John likes to put it.

That said, however, I know of a number of people who homeschool for other reasons. One very liberal atheist family in Madison is homeschooling because the district refused to do anything about the bullying both kids were subjected to for their huge food allergy issues. Another has a couple of children being alternately educated - one for disciplinary issues and one for the fact that the school district can’t provide advanced enough education. Last is the case like my son’s where he’s in school part time and needs to have an education program for the rest of the school day at home. I can guarantee that his mental health issues

Wow! A lot happens in 9 hours. Glad the Austin bomber is out of business, though some precautions are still necessary.
Several lizards basically called it, though he is a little younger than expected. Home schooling may have given him a head start on teh crazy. Besides the home schooling, I notice that his mother had this to say at the time of his graduation in 2013:

He has 30 hrs of college credit too, but he’s thinking of taking some time to figure out what he wants to do….maybe a mission trip.(emphasis added)

That would be typical of Mormons, though not exclusive to them. Home schooling is less common among Mormons, except the weird outliers, and they don’t do mission trips. We’ll find out more as this moves along.
Taken together, the home-schooling, apparent religious background, and targeting of minorities exactly match the racist rightwing motivation many here expected. I also expect SMOTI and the likes of Donald May to declare him a leftist and a Democrat as a matter of course.

A 2012 blog, which appears to be part of a government class project at Austin Community College, lists the author as Mark Conditt of Pflugerville, Texas. Conditt is believed to have been a resident of Pflugerville, north of Austin.

NBC News could not immediately confirm if the blog belonged to the suspect, but public records show only one Mark Conditt in Pflugerville.

An IEP is critical in getting a proper education for anyone who is even somewhat off the norm in a public education setting. John has had one since 2nd grade.

I forget when I started receiving one but I had a special ed teacher helping me as early as kindergarten. I didn’t get my ASD diagnosis until 10th grade though. I really think the IEP program helps because there were some classes where I benefited from smaller class size and a teacher who had experience with students with disabilities. Others namely social studies I shined in regardless of class size hence why it’s called an Individualized Education Plan. Those who rag on public education have no idea about how those have helped people like me and your son.

So, I was poking around the web today and lo and behold, I found a story about one of our all-time fave Creationists (and self-appointed would-be prophet and pseudo-messiah). Looks like some trouble in paradise…..one of his “kittens” has fled.

A woman known from the TV shows of controversial TV personality Adnan Oktar, who is better known abroad as “Harun Yahya,” has said she has fled the mansion where they lived together with his retinue.

Writing on her Instagram account, Ceylan Özgül said she was “isolated” throughout the time she spent in Oktar’s compound.

“Is a person free if they have not been to a grocery store in 20 years? If they have not bought medicine from the pharmacy by themselves? If they do not even know what a Turkish Lira looks like because the banknotes changed years ago?” she wrote.

Özgül added that she had not been permitted to decide on her own weight or hairstyle for 20 years.

hurriyetdailynews.com

This is not merely some ‘sect’ - no, no, no. This is outright cult behavior. In any event, good to see she got out; she’s basically been isolated for almost two decades. Good for her.

Still just cloudy and gloomy here in Western MA: this storm* seems to a fairly slow-moving one, since they have pushed back the start of the snow til about 4:00p - which will at least let me get some shopping and errands done before it hits - and scaled back the snow forecast for the area (Berkshires) to 1-4 in. Which isn’t too bad for a 12-hour(?) storm up here. Though still a hella intro for Spring…..

*”Winter Storm Toby” as thew Weather Channel insists on tagging it. I was originally going to make a snarky remark about the inanity of naming ordinary storms like they do with hurricanes/cyclones, but then thought better of it, as this year’s weather has made personalizing the repetitive series of nor’easters we’ve suffered though in the East less needless..

Let me quickly weigh in on Homeschooling - it isn’t homogeneous at all.

We homeschooled both Boys. The Younger Boy told us he wanted to attend regular school when he was 8, so we put him in the public schools. The Older Boy, who was diagnosed with Aspergers when he was 10, continued HS’ing till he was 15 and wanted to try High School.

He had an IEP with the local district through Middle School. The Special Ed department that served the school was very accommodating, and admitted that they didn’t have a classroom that would work for him.

High school was different. The Spec. Ed director there was primarily a salesman, and he pushed a class that SOUNDED really good. Turned out to be pretty much the opposite of what he needed, and we and the district agreed it was a bad fit. The next thing they offered? What I call The Hoodlum Class. Kids with behavior issues and a history of acting out. We pulled him.

During this whole experience, Mrs. FBW was very involved in Homeschooling, attending conventions, reading, joining groups, etc. There seem to be basically 2 kinds of HS’ers, what Mrs. FBW called the “Bible Bangers” and “Bean Sprout/Technoweenies” We were the latter. A lot of this group, one or both parents had been teachers who were disillusioned with the education system, and also a lot of the kids were on the spectrum. They weren’t rebelling against kids being taught real science and such. They were rebelling against their children being taught poorly.

So, frankly, it irks me when people with little knowledge make sweeping judgements about Homeschooling, the Homeschooled, and the parents who make the choice.

A prominent Kremlin-linked Russian politician has methodically cultivated ties with leaders of the National Rifle Association and documented efforts in real time over six years to leverage those connections and gain deeper access into American politics, NPR has learned.

Now we are allowing it all to come apart and this country is paying for it.

re: #228 danarchy

According to the department of education a little over 3% of students are home schooled. For me that is 3% too many, but it is hardly enough to cause a collapse of the education system.

As FBW points out in #297, motivations and outcomes vary. There is no doubt though that “Bible banger” homeschooling has the potential to significantly magnify the problems these people will have relating to the real world and to a pluralistic, multi-cultural society. Indeed, it is designed to do so. I have seen this outcome many times. That is the context of my remarks about the Austin bomber and his history.
The solution is not to ban home-schooling, especially not as long as potentially incompetent local boards control most schools. It is very much more complicated than that and has to do with systemic factors that allow superstitious grifters to gain more power than is healthy for a secular society.

Mark Anthony Conditt’s Social Media & Blog on Politics

“My name is Mark Conditt. I enjoy cycling, parkour, tennis, reading, and listening to music. I am not that politically inclined. I view myself as a conservative, but I don’t think I have enough information to defend my stance as well as it should be defended. The reasons I am taking this class is because I want to understand the US government, and I hope that it will help me clarify my stance, and then defend it.”

That’s the opening of a blog that appears in the name of Mark Anthony Conditt, now named by NBC News as the Austin bombing suspect. The blog, which he wrote while at Austin Community College, is called “Defining My Stance” and links to classmates’ blogs.

[…]

On the blog, the suspect gave a window into his mind and political views. In it, he said that he opposes gay marriage, comparing it to bestiality. He railed against abortion.

Austin Demographics

White: 68.3% (Non-Hispanic Whites: 48.7%)
Hispanic or Latino: 35.1% (29.1% Mexican, 0.5% Puerto Rican, 0.4% Cuban, 5.1% Other)
African American: 8.1%
Asian: 6.3% (1.9% Indian, 1.5% Chinese, 1.0% Vietnamese, 0.7% Korean, 0.3% Filipino, 0.2% Japanese, 0.8% Other)
American Indian: 0.9%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander: 0.1%
Two or More Races: 3.4%

This differs very substantially from the racial identification of the bombing victims, 2 of whom (including both fatalities) were black in a city that is only 8.1% African American.

re: #221 ObserverArt

I don’t necessarily disagree with anything above. So what though is a family to do where the public schools are wildly inadequate and private school way beyond reach? Homeschooled can’t be whatever a single mom pulls out of the air. Regulations and standards must be baked in.

One thought/worry I have is that maybe this character they got was just the bag man, delivery person, not the real bomb maker. And there are others in the wings to take his place. As authorities said, these bombs had some sophistication, and this suspects background doesn’t seem to lend itself to him being a professional bomb maker.

Just my thoughts/worries as to the info I have right now.

The latest episode of my saga.

First, a brief recap for those who don’t read every post I ever make:

On Friday, I had a ride in an ambulance. More here. Today I found out that the first to try to set the IV was the ‘probie’, they guy who just got off probation. He missed. They should call him something else. On Monday, I found out the guy who succeeded is the Fire Inspector.

Today was my annual (a new thing) fire inspection at the shop. I saw the inspector as he and his partner left the shop at the other end of the block, and nobody else was open yet, so we walked together to my shop as I got out the key. Turns out he knew last Friday my inspection was this week (so he also knew when I saw him Monday), but decided not to say anything. Probably a good thing. He said he’ll be back tomorrow with my inspection report. I have 30 days to get my fire extinguisher inspected. I thanked him for not sticking me. His partner laughed.

For being the “most popular” (in a very limited poll) politician ever, Bernie’s surrogates keep losing everywhere. And it’s not about the $.

It’s because Bernie is about Bernie.

Let’s see: sounds like a Wingnut Welfare Term Paper, so let’s take a wild guess as to its contents: maybe something like:

Liberal Democrats have turned California into a socialistic hellhole of over-regulation, over-spending, confiscatory taxation, guilt-ridden over-toleration of minority crime, and totalitarian intolerance of political opposition: resulting in businesses and populations fleeing in horror, leaving the state in a death-spiral of dystopian collapse. Any day now.”

Lest we forget, Rage Furby was also a recipient of this “esteemed” award.

On my other saga, the one about people riding their bikes here from all over just so I can work on them, I had flashbacks when the first customer of the day brought her bike in for tire inflation and inspection. Her bike looked just like the one that gave me fits with his tubelessness. Nope. Not even the same brand. And she has tubes. Whew.

A couple called me from 75 miles away, him yesterday and her this morning, because the rim on their tandem split and the wheel won’t go around any more. Last night, he said something about getting a taxi to bring them here, and I think I laughed. This morning, she said they hadn’t had any luck finding someone there to bring them here, and did I know of anyone. I asked my first customer, she was polite enough not to laugh, but had to decline. I gave the tandem couple the number for a guy who does those kinds of shuttles as a business, but he lives about the same number of miles in a different direction.

The fire inspector’s partner checked for local Uber drivers. Nope. Time to start Guber.

I have the rim they need. I can put it on. I may see them this afternoon. I wished them luck. Tandems are like sail boats (or so I hear.) They’ll either bring you together, or they’ll split you apart. If I get to do the work, it will be extremely difficult, because I laughed.
