He successfully shepherded a bill through the Unicameral under the last governor, who vetoed it, then the Unicameral overturned the veto, ending the death penalty.
Our current hedge-fund billionaire governor paid out of his own pocket to fund a referendum in the last election, including advertising, to overturn the law. The referendum narrowly passed and the death penalty was reinstated.
Ernie Chambers seeks a review of the lethal injection protocol, arguing (along with the ACLU) that the drugs used were illegally obtained under Federal and state law by the state. Sen. Chambers also argues the protocol itself is unconstitutional.
He has long sought abolition of the death penalty in Nebraska, and his recent attempt that was successful seemed to be the end of the issue, until Pete Ricketts came along with his referendum.

Well, this is screwed up. The turtle didn’t do anything. The teacher allegedly is the one in the wrong here (though the situation is being investigated).

The “invasive species” claim seems specious, since the turtle was in a freakin’ aquarium. That argument could be used for a whole bunch of different animals (such as guinea pigs).

Your governor is a real disgrace. One of our criminal governors — the Republican one — put in a death penalty moratorium in Illinois back in 1999; in 2011 it was permanently abolished. George Ryan was an old style Republican; even if he wasn’t a model of rectitude, he is a saint compared to the Republicans of today. Politics is the art of compromise, and it’s now being treated as a zero sum game, where the rich get all the benefits and the burdens get shifted to everyone else, whether they realize it or not.
Trump/GOP: massive tax cuts for all!
Fine print: marginal tax cuts for all but the rich and corporations; tax cuts expire for middle class in a few years while the deep tax cuts for corporations and pass throughs are permanent; average tax break is when you factor in billionaires getting millions in tax breaks while most working class see something on order of a $1.50 a week benefit. It’s not even enough to get two cups of coffee from Starbucks a month.
Oh, and the tax breaks from that act get wiped out once you factor in the higher health care costs thanks to GOP sabotage of Obamacare and the Trump tariffs on imports.

I quit on Twitter when shit I wasn’t following nor wanted to see was being pushed into my timeline with seemingly no way to stop it. I deactivated Facebook a few days ago because of this data sharing of friends so people have access to my stuff that I have no relationship to at all, they harvest my data because a friend agreed to some data usage that I had no say so in.

Anyway, jumping over to social structures and economics, anyone who wants a type of singularity are being influenced by creationist/religious ideas. They think that some god can simply appear out of nowhere, speak a few words, and bang, there we have a new universe.
As near as I can tell, anthropology and archeology shows us that the move to farming and thus settlement happened over several millennia, and this was a rapid innovation on evolutionary scales.
Our “economy” today is the way a settled, farming species accounts for its bits and bobs.
The basics of our human societies go back at least several hundred thousand years.
These type of things are not going to change overnight, and give no regard to the wacky “singularity” folk.

Liberal arts can give people who think they have all the answers the ability to fool people who don’t really want to keep up with everything.
The one thing in the calculation of “STEM creates automatons and liberal arts creates thinkers” is that most people don’t really care that much either way. 80% is about my estimate. I’ve seen it far too often, even in the advanced classes I took, and with the classes my son is taking. In his history class, part of the IB program supposedly shaping future leaders, his attempts to organize something for a gun violence march has been met with derision or indifference.
The flip side is, I’m a coder who reads physics and math for fun, and I know more about politics and history than 90% of the people around me.

And I’ve never quite gotten that because, as much as I’ve been paying attention to physics (my first attempt at college was physics), all of the current evidence leads to there being a beginning, which we have labeled the “Big Bang” even though bang means sudden expansion, not huge explosion. How it got started is currently a question that we’re unsure of, in the sense that we don’t know what caused the initial spark, but there is a beginning.

Of course, that’s because a lot of the “intellectuals” of that era are the ones out there playing the role of Pied-Piper to a whole new generation. Bernie, Stein, Sarandon, and others are “progressives” who came of age or had leading roles in that period, having learned all the wrong lessons and now passing them on. Many of them have been nursing that grudge against the DNC ever since the ‘68 convention, which also explains their virulent hatred of choosing the nominee via delegates (except, of course, when their candidate is losing badly).

I don’t understand your critique of the “big bang” theory which I thought is the current scientific explanation for the origin of our universe: the universe suddenly came into being from a point of singularity which expanded at speeds many times the speed of light. There is no agreed scientific position on what preceded this event.

How is this anything new? People have been gullible since the beginning of civilization and have been misled by those with access to a printing press or radio station. William Randolph Hearst was responsible for starting the Spanish American War in 1898. The racism that continues to infect our society predates the Internet. Once again state Senator Ernie Chambers (I-Omaha) is trying to get the death penalty ended in the state.
He successfully shepherded a bill through the Unicameral under the last governor, who vetoed it, then the Unicameral overturned the veto, ending the death penalty.
Our current hedge-fund billionaire governor paid out of his own pocket to fund a referendum in the last election, including advertising, to overturn the law. The referendum narrowly passed and the death penalty was reinstated.
Ernie Chambers seeks a review of the lethal injection protocol, arguing (along with the ACLU) that the drugs used were illegally obtained under Federal and state law by the state. Sen. Chambers also argues the protocol itself is unconstitutional.
He has long sought abolition of the death penalty in Nebraska, and his recent attempt that was successful seemed to be the end of the issue, until Pete Ricketts came along with his referendum.

We stopped teaching civics a while back and this is what comes of it. Democracy is about choosing the better candidate from among those offered, not voting for your personal ideal choice of candidate.
Though I believe that we would be better off if we adopted a proportional representation system so third party candidates could get elected. If people had more choices maybe they would be more inclined to vote.

Are you saying our schools are strong in the liberal arts too? Because here in Columbus our schools are all about sciences and weak as hell in the arts.
And what I meant by machines is if all you teach is hard science, where does the softer side of the human come in? Machines are all about science. Humans are not.
What is wrong with some of both so that humans maintain all the great benefits of being human like feeling for others? Do the sciences teach that? I don’t think they do, so a whole part of the human experience is missing. Look around, isn’t that evident in a good portion of what we discuss these days?
And as an artist I think that is tragic.

As for humanities, I remember what I got and what my kids get. My oldest kids schedule this year consists of English, History, Theory of Knowledge, Spanish, Anatomy, Physics, and Calculus. Texas, even though they push stem a lot, require four years of English and four years of social studies, which includes history, government, and economics. In previous years he’s done orchestra and art since they also require some type of fine arts credits.
But, I have supplemented my kids education because they’ve been lacking since even I was in school. Probability isn’t quite taught well enough for people to use it. History classes tend to be survey classes rather than about what the history means (though my son’s history teacher is better than most).

Well, the fire in Glasgow city centre is definitely under control now. I did have to leave the office due to the lack of running water, which was diverted to the firefighters, who have done a great job of containing the fire, and preventing it spreading to the Pavilion. (Mainly by keeping it damp, so there may still be water damage.)
There’s still a fair amount of smoke, which contains asbestos, so the general area downwind of the fire is still hazardous, so the opera I was going to tonight (At the Theatre Royal, 1 block away.) has been cancelled, but it could have worse.

My husband’s school has an equal emphasis on liberal arts and STEM. As does my son’s school. What I do see is schools trying to pigeonhole students very early. Take a test, looks like engineering is for you, load up on STEM classes, here’s your learning path for the next 10 years. Nope, I refused permission to let my sons take those aptitude tests. Flat out told the counselors they would not be setting foot in these sessions. I want them taking anything they want to take.

The high school has different tracks you can take, including STEM. Even though two of my kids are engineering types, and one is more the fine arts type, I’ve made them all go the general education track by requiring four years of Spanish, music, and math through calculus. They have three electives their entire four years that they can choose something interesting to them.

An interesting part of the spending bill:
As part of the bill, there will be guidance to clarify the interpretation of what is known as the Dickey amendment, a small provision that was attached to an omnibus bill in 1996. It prevents the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from studying the health implications of gun violence and says “none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” […]
The clarity would be similar to a suggestion offered by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar during congressional testimony in February. Azar told lawmakers that he does not believe that the Dickey amendment expressly prohibits CDC research on guns, but rather restricts the agency from advocating for advocate for certain gun policies.
They have slightly loosened the CDC’s ability to research guns.

Colorado Senate Minority Leader Lucia Guzman (D) stepped down from her leadership post on Thursday in part to protest the state GOP leadership’s handling of sexual misconduct allegations.
“Sometimes leadership means stepping back so others can step forward,” Guzman, who is term-limited, said in a statement reported by The Denver Post.
“Traditionally, those in leadership hold on to their role and title until the very end of their term, but I’m passing the torch now.
