Once again state Senator Ernie Chambers (I-Omaha) is trying to get the death penalty ended in the state.

He successfully shepherded a bill through the Unicameral under the last governor, who vetoed it, then the Unicameral overturned the veto, ending the death penalty.

Our current hedge-fund billionaire governor paid out of his own pocket to fund a referendum in the last election, including advertising, to overturn the law. The referendum narrowly passed and the death penalty was reinstated.

Ernie Chambers seeks a review of the lethal injection protocol, arguing (along with the ACLU) that the drugs used were illegally obtained under Federal and state law by the state. Sen. Chambers also argues the protocol itself is unconstitutional.

He has long sought abolition of the death penalty in Nebraska, and his recent attempt that was successful seemed to be the end of the issue, until Pete Ricketts came along with his referendum.

Mini-Trump doing his best to illustrate what will happen as Trump persists in tearing down our allegiances with others:

Duterte says Philippines no longer to participate in any US-led wars

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has reiterated his country will no longer participate in any US-led war as it has gained nothing from its past participation “except brutality and agony”, reported China’s Xinhua news agency.

“I am addressing America right now. Whatever expeditions that you will conduct, any wars that you will fight in any other countries, count us out,” Duterte said in a speech before new graduates of the Philippine National Police Academy in Silang, Cavite Wednesday.

[…]

“We did not benefit (from these expeditions) all these years of sacrifice except brutality and agony. We will stand on our own,” Duterte said.

Well, this is screwed up. The turtle didn’t do anything. The teacher allegedly is the one in the wrong here (though the situation is being investigated).

Idaho officials ‘humanely’ euthanize snapping turtle that reportedly was fed a sick puppy by a junior high school teacher (Goes to the Salt Lake City Tribune, more at the link):

Because it is considered an invasive species, Idaho officials said they have “humanely” euthanized a snapping turtle that had been kept in a Preston classroom and allegedly was fed a live, terminally ill puppy last week.

Police responded to Preston Junior High School on March 8 in response of a complaint of animal cruelty, according to the Franklin County sheriff’s office. Four days later, the office submitted reports to Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney Vic Pearson for a review of potential animal cruelty charges against science teacher Robert Crosland.

The “invasive species” claim seems specious, since the turtle was in a freakin’ aquarium. That argument could be used for a whole bunch of different animals (such as guinea pigs).

Well, so far it appears to be a couple of buildings in one block. (Unfortunately, that appears to include the well loved Paviliion Theatre) At the moment it’s the vast amount of smoke that’s the main threat around the area. The smoke’s not visible from places outside of Glasgow.

In his snooty British accent, Nix is only saying - and converting into highly effective digital marketing - what Trump has long believed: lies don’t matter as long as they’re believed.

This is also the modus operandi of Fox.

Your governor is a real disgrace. One of our criminal governors — the Republican one — put in a death penalty moratorium in Illinois back in 1999; in 2011 it was permanently abolished. George Ryan was an old style Republican; even if he wasn’t a model of rectitude, he is a saint compared to the Republicans of today. Actually, if the Republican party consisted of people like him, our country would not be the mess it is today and Trump would not be our President.

Politics is the art of compromise, and it’s now being treated as a zero sum game, where the rich get all the benefits and the burdens get shifted to everyone else, whether they realize it or not.

Trump/GOP: massive tax cuts for all!
Fine print: marginal tax cuts for all but the rich and corporations; tax cuts expire for middle class in a few years while the deep tax cuts for corporations and pass throughs are permanent; average tax break is when you factor in billionaires getting millions in tax breaks while most working class see something on order of a $1.50 a week benefit. It’s not even enough to get two cups of coffee from Starbucks a month.

Oh, and the tax breaks from that act get wiped out once you factor in the higher health care costs thanks to GOP sabotage of Obamacare and the Trump tariffs on imports.

In the fantasy world of the far-left, one of two things will eventually happen: Either we’ll keep getting progressively (no pun intended) worse politicians like Trump until the stink gets so bad that “the people” revolt and the system is torn down in favor of one that enjoys widespread support. OR their political rivals will get so desperate to win an election that they’ll break down and support a far-left candidate, who “the people” will vote for because they’ll be so much better than the reactionary candidates and thus the revolution will happen through the voting booth.

And that really is the problem: Privilege and idealism have mixed into this toxic stew that says “If a candidate who fits your beliefs to a ‘t’ isn’t in the race, there’s no point to voting. Just wait 2-4 years and try again.”

Using the false choice of STEM, math & reading to destroy the teaching of the liberal arts of History, social studies/civics, art, etc has been one of the most important tools in creating a voting population that can’t see through their lies and thefts.

The idea of slow, gradual progress is totally lost on them.

Because they are creationists, though they’d be loathe to admit it.

Over the past several weeks I have rambled on here about cosmology and the problems of presenting the field to the general public. I maintain that the widely circulated drawings about the changes of the universe from the “big bang” are influenced by creationism, and indeed even the concept of “the big bang” is essentially creationist.

This is for many reasons, one of which is that we humans are always looking for a beginning. I have speculated that this urge is driven by our own need to come to terms with our conception.

Anyway, jumping over to social structures and economics, anyone who wants a type of singularity are being influenced by creationist/religious ideas. They think that some god can simply appear out of nowhere, speak a few words, and bang, there we have a new universe.

As near as I can tell, anthropology and archeology shows us that the move to farming and thus settlement happened over several millennia, and this was a rapid innovation on evolutionary scales.

Our “economy” today is the way a settled, farming species accounts for its bits and bobs.

The basics of our human societies go back at least several hundred thousand years.

These type of things are not going to change overnight, and give no regard to the wacky “singularity” folk.

Liberal arts can give people who think they have all the answers the ability to fool people who don’t really want to keep up with everything.

The one thing in the calculation of “STEM creates automatons and liberal arts creates thinkers” is that most people don’t really care that much either way. 80% is about my estimate. I’ve seen it far too often, even in the advanced classes I took, and with the classes my son is taking. In his history class, part of the IB program supposedly shaping future leaders, his attempts to organize something for a gun violence march has been met with derision or indifference.

The flip side is, I’m a coder who reads physics and math for fun, and I know more about politics and history than 90% of the people around me.

I maintain that the widely circulated drawings about the changes of the universe from the “big bang” are influenced by creationism, and indeed even the concept of “the big bang” is essentially creationist.

And I’ve never quite gotten that because, as much as I’ve been paying attention to physics (my first attempt at college was physics), all of the current evidence leads to there being a beginning, which we have labeled the “Big Bang” even though bang means sudden expansion, not huge explosion. How it got started is currently a question that we’re unsure of, in the sense that we don’t know what caused the initial spark, but there is a beginning.

Of course, that’s because a lot of the “intellectuals” of that era are the ones out there playing the role of Pied-Piper to a whole new generation. Bernie, Stein, Sarandon, and others are “progressives” who came of age or had leading roles in that period, having learned all the wrong lessons and now passing them on. Many of them have been nursing that grudge against the DNC ever since the ‘68 convention, which also explains their virulent hatred of choosing the nominee via delegates (except, of course, when their candidate is losing badly).

All too true. The ones who did learn wisely (Mike Harrington comes to mind) seem to have all passed away already.

The lawsuit — filed by the attorneys general in Washington, D.C., and Maryland — alleges that Trump is violating the clause, which prevents elected officials from receiving gifts or benefits from foreign governments without Congress’s approval, WAMU reported.

The lawsuit is filed against Trump in his “official capacity and in his individual capacity,” according to the Washington, D.C., radio station.

He has long sought abolition of the death penalty in Nebraska, and his recent attempt that was successful seemed to be the end of the issue, until Pete Ricketts came along with his referendum.

starherald.com (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald article about his move today in the Unicameral)

How revolting that a billionaire can promote killing people out of his pocket change.

I have read exactly one Rod Dreher polemic, and never reached the end. He writes likes a guy who is in love with seeing his own words in print (or on screen), starting from a false premise and adding layers of argle-bargle to reach a ridiculous conclusion.

If he’s trying to be a modern Thomas Aquinas, it ain’t working.

That is exactly his issue. He is a pseudo intellectual who is high on his own supply.

We stopped teaching civics a while back and this is what comes of it. Democracy is about choosing the better candidate from among those offered, not voting for your personal ideal choice of candidate.

Though I believe that we would be better off if we adopted a proportional representation system so third party candidates could get elected. If people had more choices maybe they would be more inclined to vote.

re: #102 Weaselone

This is actually bullshit. STEM as it is being taught in many localities might do this, but STEM when taught properly teaches the exact opposite. Science literacy, critical thinking, innovation, creativity and the ability to reject a false belief when confronted with evidence does not lead to automatons.

Were we not discussing the lack of liberal arts? Doesn’t STEM mean Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics? I notice you say nothing about the liberal arts, and that misses the point we were discussing.

I never said I had a problem with teaching these disciplines. The point is if you don’t teach humanities as being equal to the sciences you might get critical thinking in the sciences but what about critical thinking in things like history, arts, culture?

Are you saying our schools are strong in the liberal arts too? Because here in Columbus our schools are all about sciences and weak as hell in the arts.

And what I meant by machines is if all you teach is hard science, where does the softer side of the human come in? Machines are all about science. Humans are not.

What is wrong with some of both so that humans maintain all the great benefits of being human like feeling for others? Do the sciences teach that? I don’t think they do, so a whole part of the human experience is missing. Look around, isn’t that evident in a good portion of what we discuss these days?

And as an artist I think that is tragic.

re: #133 Backwoods_Sleuth

The bill wouldn’t just call an abortion doctor a murderer, but the woman as well.

It would seek to ban all abortion as murder (presumably the goal is to get to the Supreme Court and overturn Roe v Wade).

As such, the woman could be charged with murder as well (and also presumably executed).

Anyone helping them presumably could be charged with Accessory to murder, or conspiracy to commit murder.

I believe execution is the position they call “pro-life.”

Under a bill introduced Monday, HB 565, the state would prohibit abortions even in cases of rape, incest or danger to a woman’s life.

The proposal would allow criminal charges against both doctors and pregnant women seeking abortions and would characterize an “unborn human” as a person under Ohio’s criminal code regarding homicide. That means abortions could be punishable by life in prison or even the death penalty.

Actually, I was just responding to him.

As for humanities, I remember what I got and what my kids get. My oldest kids schedule this year consists of English, History, Theory of Knowledge, Spanish, Anatomy, Physics, and Calculus. Texas, even though they push stem a lot, require four years of English and four years of social studies, which includes history, government, and economics. In previous years he’s done orchestra and art since they also require some type of fine arts credits.

But, I have supplemented my kids education because they’ve been lacking since even I was in school. Probability isn’t quite taught well enough for people to use it. History classes tend to be survey classes rather than about what the history means (though my son’s history teacher is better than most).

The readout from the Kremlin on Donald Trump’s phone call is kind of strange. After noting right at the top that Mr. Trump congratulated Mr. Putin for his “electoral win,” they segued into:

Satisfaction was expressed with the limited reduction of tensions around the Korean Peninsula. The expediency of continuing consistent efforts to resolve the situation by peaceful, diplomatic means was underscored.

It was agreed to develop further bilateral contacts in light of the changes in leadership at the US Department of State. The possibility of organising a top-level meeting received special attention.

On the whole, the conversation was constructive and businesslike, with a focus on overcoming the accumulated problems in Russian-American relations.

I’m an optimist, but here’s my rule about humanity: If you took a bunch of people from now back to the 14th century, 80% of them, within a year, would act as if they were never from any other time period. It’s why they’re so dangerous with regards to the GOP’s attempt to move us away from democracy.

Possibly. Right up until they started trying to do their little fundamentalist non-denominational thing (because almost none of them would stomach the Papism very well) and started getting burned at the stake for it. Then I wonder what the little rats would think… ;)

re: #200 Targetpractice

Lawyers don’t generally resign unless one of three conditions are met: 1) Their client is failing to pay his bills, 2) they ethically cannot continue to represent their client, or 3) there has been a falling out with their client.

Since the wingnuts believe Trump is a billionaire who could afford to pay whatever his lawyers ask, that leaves potential ethical violations or attorney/client relations breaking down. There’s no reasonable explanation that says Dowd just decided to up and quit one day.

Trump is an awful client. How do we know this? Because he’s always been an awful client. His own legal teams devised a 2-man rule so that any decision was made with two lawyers in the room because no one could trust anything coming out of his mouth.

Trump doesn’t take advice. He hears only what he wants to believe. He doesn’t trust anyone who tells him stuff that disagrees with his worldview.

All of that applies to his current situation. A lawyer is ethically bound to tell Trump what the deal is and all the repercussions of his actions. Trump doesn’t want to hear that. Trump wants to hear that the lawyer is making it go away.

The lawyers can’t do that because it’s not a real estate matter that can be settled. These are criminal investigations involving high crimes and misdemeanors (obstruction of justice is among the least serious charges that could be considered against Trump personally IMO - and we know the GOP impeached Clinton on those very grounds, so there’s precedent).

Trump is going to spin this as though he’s happy his lead attorney resigned from the case, but the reality is that there aren’t many willing to jump in. You don’t see his pal Dershowitz going for it, despite auditioning for the role on Fox daily. There’s a reason - even Alan knows it’s a shit show and Trump isn’t reliable and lies about everything, as do everyone else around him. It’s a toxic waste dump of chaos and criminality.

Special Note:
The symbolism associated with the top graphic of Hillary’s concession speech is pregnant with meaning. Notice the deep purple in both Mrs. Clinton’s clothes, as well as Bill Clinton’s tie. This is the deep royal blue associated with royalty who can never be deposed regardless of the election outcome. They intended to be victorious as seen in the “V” in her lapels and his tie. And they fully intend on a victory whether it be by coup d’état, inciting a revolution or starting a civil war. Notice the victory “V’” formed by the American flag in the background. Whoever set up this venue was quite meticulous in arranging these details for the cameramen and photographers from specific angles. Please see the downward gaze of the Jesuits Bill Clinton (Georgetown grad) and Tim Kaine (Jesuit-trained missionary) pensive in thought about the coming Purple Revolution. This whole affair is strikingly reminiscent of the Book of Revelation where “the woman is arrayed in purple and scarlet”. (The Scarlet Woman and the Scarlet Beast)

Narrator: Trump doesn’t know what he’s talking about. NAFTA was not a bad deal for the US. In fact, it was a modest benefit to the US.

He ascribes job losses to NAFTA, when the culprit is that companies offshored jobs to places like China and Asia, where labor costs are a fraction of what they are here.

How do we know this happened? Because Trump did this too. His own businesses bought Chinese steel instead of domestic steel. His clothing line is made overseas. Ivanka’s clothing line (when not stealing designs from other designers) is made overseas.

He profits from the overseas production where he can slap his name on the product.

He could have had those clothing lines made in the US. He claims they’re a premium clothing line. People would pay more for clothing made in the US. But Trump decided to profit from the cheap manufacturing and still charge more for his clothes anyways.

It’s as though he doesn’t know his own bullshit.

Narrator: He doesn’t.

Musical interlude time.

A song by Genesis, but not with Phil Collins on the album (Calling All Stations). Many don’t consider this a Genesis album at all, but I do find this a pretty good song:

The difference between China and Russia is China doesn’t want us destroyed. We’re their largest single customer. They might want us weakened politically, but destroyed, no. So China is making a political statement right back at Trump’s.

Russia on the other hand would shed no tears if we disappeared.

Well, the fire in Glasgow city centre is definitely under control now. I did have to leave the office due to the lack of running water, which was diverted to the firefighters, who have done a great job of containing the fire, and preventing it spreading to the Pavilion. (Mainly by keeping it damp, so there may still be water damage.)

There’s still a fair amount of smoke, which contains asbestos, so the general area downwind of the fire is still hazardous, so the opera I was going to tonight (At the Theatre Royal, 1 block away.) has been cancelled, but it could have worse.

EDIT: I should also note that there’s been no fatalities from this fire, which considering how severe it was, is amazing.

A lot of my employer’s high end donors seem to think that. They’ve been successful in business and a lot of them like liberal arts and humanities grads for hiring.

Late to the party, but I work in high, high tech and the best engineer we have has a degree in theater from Colorado State. My degree is in psychology and I’m an enterprise systems architect. We hire thinking skills, not degrees.

My husband’s school has an equal emphasis on liberal arts and STEM. As does my son’s school. What I do see is schools trying to pigeonhole students very early. Take a test, looks like engineering is for you, load up on STEM classes, here’s your learning path for the next 10 years. Nope, I refused permission to let my sons take those aptitude tests. Flat out told the counselors they would not be setting foot in these sessions. I want them taking anything they want to take.

The high school has different tracks you can take, including STEM. Even though two of my kids are engineering types, and one is more the fine arts type, I’ve made them all go the general education track by requiring four years of Spanish, music, and math through calculus. They have three electives their entire four years that they can choose something interesting to them.

Gov. Ricketts traveled to China in 2015 with a large trade delegation.

“…Right-wing authoritarians today use the threat or the reality of terrorism to seek and hold power. The one consistent policy of the Trump administration thus far has been to encourage a Muslim terrorist attack within or upon the United States. Everywhere the first executive order on refugees and immigrants was understood as directed against Muslims. The major consequence, most likely the intended one, is the alienation of Muslims at home and abroad. The proposal to move the US embassy in Israel to Jerusalem is similar: it will never take place, so serves only to alienate and enrage Muslims. Michael Flynn is in the same category: though he was only national security advisor for three weeks, few Muslims will forget that he referred to their religion as a “cancer.” Modern authoritarianism is terror management, and so modern authoritarians need terror attacks: real, simulated, or both. As James Madison noticed long ago, tyranny arises “on some favorable emergency.”

It prevents the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from studying the health implications of gun violence and says “none of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” […]
The clarity would be similar to a suggestion offered by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar during congressional testimony in February. Azar told lawmakers that he does not believe that the Dickey amendment expressly prohibits CDC research on guns, but rather restricts the agency from advocating for advocate for certain gun policies.

They have slightly loosened the CDC’s ability to research guns.

Never mind that the Rs added an anti-abortion poison pill to the bill they needed to pass to mitigate the damage they are doing.

Colorado Senate Minority Leader Lucia Guzman (D) stepped down from her leadership post on Thursday in part to protest the state GOP leadership’s handling of sexual misconduct allegations.

“Sometimes leadership means stepping back so others can step forward,” Guzman, who is term-limited, said in a statement reported by The Denver Post.

“Traditionally, those in leadership hold on to their role and title until the very end of their term, but I’m passing the torch now. I believe providing more time for new leaders to learn and grow is the best way to set up future caucuses for success. I want to give the next generation of Democrats an opportunity to lead.”

Maybe because Time Inc. was just acquired by Meredith Inc, and Meredith is trimming the payroll, the Time folk decided to go all in with the material instead of holding back?

He’s a very good friend of mine. Major in Theater/Arts, minor in English. Best developer I’ve ever worked with….because he understands pattern recognition and languages.

I’m Psychology/Women’s Studies BS with a MS in Professional Writing. People ask me all the time how I ended up in tech as an architect. Pattern recognition and languages.

It’s about how people THINK.

Yeah, that’s what our donors are saying…
