If that’s all he does, rather than drops Tomahawks on Syria, I’ll consider it a positive sign.

Pulled a CL on the last thread, so, an update:

Hi all. Back from a three week sojourn to the UK. Great trip to visit family and then up to Scotland for the Edinburgh Harp Festival plus a couple of days in Glasgow.

The weather was just shit. On Wednesday in Edinburgh we had two inches of slush and two inches of snow covering it because it was falling faster than it was melting. No footwear can handle it, except for Wellies, which we didn’t bring.

Saw Chris Stout and Catriona McKay that night doing their new album “Bare Knuckle” live.

Find it. Buy it. They have deconstructed Scottish Trad music and built it into something unique and truly exciting. Fierce stuff.

I didn’t think that there could be a more hated politician than tRump, but Theresa May is right up there in the UK. And Boris Johnson is more loathed than May.

I totally believe that there is a faction in the press that want to see Mueller fired simply because the uproar it will cause will lead to huge ratings for days/weeks. They don’t care that it will cause a constitutional crisis, that will just be a ratings boost in itself.

Yes, certainly by me. A sane voice in an arguably insane world.

I’m still suffering from terminal jet lag. This was my day to stay awake without napping and gut it out until normal bed time. So I’m pretty much toast at this point.

Oh, and BA is now flying a 747-400 into Austin non-stop from Heathrow instead of a 787-9. It’s the first time we’ve had a commercial passenger-carrying 747 as a regularly scheduled flight into town.

Interesting. Obvious in the replies that not a one of the ones who commented could handle being near an atheist, and us giving to the poor would blow their minds.

re: #455 Mattand

Yeah, I’m all for wingnut-on-wingut violence, but the author didn’t exactly push back on the notion atheists can’t be good Americans.

Hence my letter to the newspaper Saturday pushing back against the notion of another writer claiming we were the source of school mass-shootings. Why I’ve now gotten many messages telling me “thank you” for outing myself to push back against lies.

Rick Scott jumps into Florida Senate race by running away from Trump (more at Share Blue):

Florida’s tea party governor, Rick Scott, used to be a big fan of Trump. Now he knows it’s probably best to keep his distance.

Far-right Republican Gov. Rick Scott is officially running for the Senate, but he’s not exactly looking to his good friend Trump for help. In fact, he’s running away as fast as he can.

Scott endorsed Trump immediately after the primary in 2016 and has been a stalwart supporter. Now that Scott is challenging Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, however, he’s apparently looking to step away from his cozy relationship with Trump.

He won’t even commit to letting Trump campaign for him, according to Politico. That’s a striking stance, considering Trump has been one of Scott’s loudest cheerleaders, repeatedly encouraging him to run.

Imagine pretending to hate the Iraq War and then making John Bolton your National Security Advisor.

It’s like pretending to love Jesus and becoming Donald Trump’s running mate.

This sort of “logic” sums up why I will not argue or even discuss Trump with a supporter.

All we can hope to do is limit the damage, but the possibilities are vast and they are holding a lot of cards.

Well, I live in a town full of Trump supporters. The best I can do is gently point out “difficulties” in the maladministration versus the previous “no drama Obama” administration.

Political discussions don’t come up much between me and others in town though, because they mostly know where I stand already.

huffingtonpost.com (caution, auto-play video)

The Sinclair Broadcasting guy who threatened sexual assault on David Hogg and was bounced from his show used to be the spokesman for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis.

It isn’t just Evangelical Christians who dream of violence against those they disagrees with. Mainline churches have their violent wingnuts as well.

He still has his radio show on KFTK (a conservative radio station).

St. Louis Magazine has a long story about his fight on behalf of the Archbishop of St. Louis to seize the property of a local Polish Catholic Church and disband its lay board, which had run the church for over a century. He went on a media blitz in St. Louis slagging the local church.

Prior to that, he’d been a local reporter (which is presumably why Sinclair picked him up).

I think that even if any charges are brought, we will learn the extent to which he is beholden to foreign financial interests and it will take a lot of the wind out of his sails and start to make him a serious burden to his party.

And in the end, only the GOP is currently in a position to rid us of this troublesome Cheeto.

Good lord, Trump would stand to lose probably everything. His properties, his fortune (what there is of it), the whole enchilada.

I wonder if they’d go after the Trump Organization with RICO?

Indeed, there’s a real possibility the government will seize his assets as they did Manafort’s. Kushner’s, too, if there is a clear financial connection between the two businesses. Everyone in the Trump clan should be sweating bullets now, with the possible exceptions of Tiffany and Barron.

The final tweet (or thereabouts). I found it rather chilling.

I’d guess the probability of a Cohen-pardon is high and the likelihood of Mueller being fired has grown.

I would also guess that there are NY state charges.

Mueller, of course, knows all this and much more and referred the raid anyway.

It’s on now.

Interesting article but one thing seems off:

He doesn’t have the resources to defend himself,

Michael Cohen is probably a very wealthy man by himself: talkingpointsmemo.com

Whether that means he’s more or less likely to flip on Trump remains to be seen.

TBH I’m beginning to suspect that the FBI don’t actually need him (or anyone else) to flip to send both him and Trump to prison.

Trump and Cohen are dumb enough to have left paper trails of their criminal activities, which the FBI had enough evidence of _before_ seizing Michael Cohens documents to convince a judge that a criminal offence orchestrated between Trump and Cohen had occurred.

If they were able to convince a judge that Cohen was almost certainly guilty before the raid, and now they have all the relevant documents they seized, then by definition they will have a really strong case.

Bow to our robot overlords

New Orleans Speed Camera Has Been Issuing Speeding Tickets to Parked Cars For Years

Automated speed cameras certainly have their detractors, but residents of one neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana have raised the most logical reason yet to get rid of—or at least recalibrate—the robot menace: a unit positioned on a busy street keeps issuing speeding tickets to parked cars, and authorities won’t do anything to stop it, according to WWL-TV.

So what if the parked car is autonomous, nobody to even deny the false charges?

Looks like Pence will be going to South America instead:

The White House announced on Tuesday that President Donald Trump has canceled his planned trip to South America as multiple scandals are exploding around his administration.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Tuesday morning that Trump would not be travelling to Peru or Colombia as originally planned, and would be sending Vice President Mike Pence to those countries instead.

Sanders said that Trump was staying behind in the United States because he wants to “oversee the American response to Syria and to monitor developments around the world.”

However, the timing of the announcement is certain to raise eyebrows, as it comes just one day after the FBI conducted a raid on the office of Michael Cohen, Trump’s longtime personal attorney.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Looks like Trumpworld tweeps have all suddenly gotten their JDs from Twitter, because they’re all parroting the same kind of nonsense Trump is spewing about how this is an illegal search and seizure, that the evidence seized yesterday can’t be used in a court of law, and that it’s a fishing expedition, or that it’s the deep state at work.

Yeah, it’s another day ending in Y.

1) Crime fraud exception is not taken lightly by prosecutors and to seek a warrant to search/seize isn’t taken lightly. There’s an entire section of the DOJ manual devoted to procedure and policy on use.

2) All the officials in the decision tree to make this search happen are GOP appointees or GOPers themselves. This isn’t a conspiracy. It’s the rule of law in action.

3) The FBI didn’t break into any of Cohen’s properties/residences/locations. They had lawfully obtained warrants which gives them the right under the law to search/seize pursuant to the terms of the warrants.

4) Trump must be pitching a fit over all this because these are things he simply has no control over. His criminal cronies are all under suspicion and are being investigated for criminality and actions taken before, during, and after the election. Everywhere Mueller looks, he’s finding wrongdoing - not just appearance of impropriety but actual criminal acts.

That’s why he’s got the indictments, guilty pleas, and sentenced participants thus far, including against Flynn, Manafort, Gates, Papadopoulos, and Alex van der Zwaan.

I’d like to stick to the politics is local game for the most part. That will work in lots of places and they will run with it. It won’t work in others and they should focus on what will.

2016 Presidential election was pretty stark and way too many folks shit the bed in addition to the cheating. And as disgusting as it is, his approval rating is still not as low as it should be. So we gotta support each congressional district and candidates to do their thing and then the big picture will come together when we seat the new Congress.

That’s the best part. They all thought that once Trump became president they’d get the keys to the vault and the law wouldn’t be able to touch them. Trump, his skeevy lawyers, his mediocre family and his greedy backers all believed they’d get a license to print money with no repercussions, forever and ever, amen. They might be making some money right now, but even that is disputable given that people have soured on the Trump brand and they’re losing money on a lot of fronts. And even the money from the government skimming won’t last once he’s out of office, and the brand will not recover. Net loss, sucks to be them.

re: #181 makeitstop

That’s the best part. They all thought that once Trump became president they’d get the keys to the vault and the law wouldn’t be able to touch them. Trump, his skeevy lawyers, his mediocre family and his greedy backers all believed they’d get a license to print money with no repercussions, forever and ever, amen. They might be making some money right now, but even that is disputable given that people have soured on the Trump brand and they’re losing money on a lot of fronts. And even the money from the government skimming won’t last once he’s out of office, and the brand will not recover. Net loss, sucks to be them.

Old saying: Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. Step into the abbatoir, you hogs. I’ll watch.

The other thing is this I think really will hurt the GOP brand too. I’m disappointed as we all were with the results in November 2016 but it could ultimately be a Pyhrric victory for the GOP.

Normal people see Trump as dangerous and want him gone, one way or another.

Wingnutters love him and want him to stay and want him for four more most likely.

I am not a big fan of the Buckingham Nicks version of Mac, I liked the older versions. But apparently they are doing a big tour this year and ran into some issue with Buckingham who has been on the outs with them before.

And you know Campbell is probably itching to bring back ‘Oh, Well.’

But I was told it was always sunny.

How’ve you been? I don’t know if I have seen you around here for a while.

Have not been around for quite a while. Work, etc. and limited evening computer time with lots of things competing for those hours.

Work network banned LGF, so I had to go elsewhere for my commenting fix. Was generally hanging out on DK and commenting in the birding and science areas. Getting laid off* has now freed up more computer time during the day.

And my general health is better than two years ago when I went through a minor cancer thing and also had to have a kidney operation.

So current project is finding a cheaper place to live outside the city. Which keeps me busy checking places out and starting to sort things to either dispose of or pack. Sort of energizing to break the rut and simplify possessions.

* - A sort of “don’t cry for me Argentina” thing. I knew it was coming 8 weeks before the last work day. I got a *good* severance package that included an extension on my health insurance. Mid-50s not a good age for job searching, but I have enough resources to muddle through for a few years.

According to the latest issue of PRIVATE EYE, more specifically their Kiev correspondent, certain figures in the Trump circles have been successfully buttering up/bribing the Ukrainian President and his entourage so that the local authorities would not cooperate with Mueller’s requests, which indeed they have not.

Also the so-called military aid sent to Ukraine is a joke; they’re missiles that have to be kept on the western border (ie towards Europe, not Russia where the skirmishes are) and can’t be deployed without the Pentagon’s green light. The reporter believes it’s because the US wanted to look like it was helping Ukraine, but in reality didn’t want to piss off Putin.

Pretty typical GOP to do the “thoughts and prayers” thing while saying any sort of practical protection for Mueller’s investigation is not necessary.

re: #127 Scout

Maybe this November will boil down to a very stark choice: In your congressional district you vote for impeachment (the Democratic candidate) or against impeachment (the GOP candidate).

And that’s the angle everyone focuses on in every district.

“Impeach Trump” would sink a Democratic candidate here. To the extent Trump comes up, a message more like “Trump’s tariffs sank your farm/business” would be much better.

For really local (like me), Trump is not an issue, just focusing on town needs and what I’ve done here in the past.

Dude! I was really worried that you had disappeared for so long. Good to see you back.

I’ve always wondered if we crossed paths a few years ago. When I take my bike tours through Fairmount Park, I usually end at the top of the Art Museum steps to just chill and watch the tourists reenact the Rocky climb.

One day a guy about my age wandered past me with a really nice looking camera and I thought “I wonder if that is FFF?” Part of me feels bad for not asking. The other part of me realizes the likely outcome of the conversation would have been this guy looking at me like I was an insane lunatic.

Anyways, good to have you back.

One weird/oxymoronic thing about legal filings is that it’s perfectly normal to claim contradictory things as part of different defenses to arguments. The idea is that if one defense fails, you’ve stated your case for a different defense as, “Even if X isn’t true, here’s another defense (that assumes X isn’t true) with this evidence.”

1) Assad is winning anyway so why would he use gas and set himself up for international retaliation?
2) Ergo, rebels deliberately stage or fake these chemical attacks on civilian populations under their control in order to “frame” Assad and provoke a Western military response

You can blame GW WMD Bush for the fact these theories have reached the credibility they have :/

Rummaging in a closet for stuff to pack or throw out turned up two old-style film cameras. (Canon AT-1 and a Canon AE-1 Program.) Plus two 100-200mm zoom lenses, a few other accessories, and 8 rolls of unexposed 200- or 400- speed film.

Any Lizards know of any photo buffs or locations possibly interested in older equipment like this? I doubt the stuff is compatible with modern digital cameras at all. And the film is probably at least 15-20 years old.

NOBODY IS ABOVE THE LAW—MUELLER FIRING RAPID RESPONSE

Sample email, post-firing

Dear friends,

Moments ago, Donald Trump fired the man investigating Trump and his inner circle, special counsel Robert Mueller.

Make no mistake: Trump has set off a Constitutional crisis. Our immediate response will determine the future of our democracy.

That’s why we’re organizing emergency “Nobody is Above the Law” rallies [5 PM today // Noon tomorrow], with local hosts setting the exact time in each location. There are already over 150 events scheduled across the country!

Can you attend a rapid response rally?

Click here to find and attend an urgent event near you!

Mueller was named as special counsel to get to the bottom of the Russian meddling in the November election, and any ensuing effort to cover it up. This includes conflicts of interest within the Trump campaign, and possibly investigating Trump’s own finances to look for motives. By firing Mueller, Trump has triggered a full-fledged Constitutional crisis by asserting that he is above the law. The next few hours will determine whether he is proved right.

Congress has the constitutional authority and obligation to hold Trump accountable for this abuse of power. But we’ve seen the Republican Congress give Trump pass after pass every time he crosses another line.

If this isn’t the moment they put country over party to hold Trump accountable, it’s not clear whether it will ever happen. Let’s show our lawmakers that we won’t stand by while they allow Donald Trump to slide the US into authoritarianism.

Join thousands across the country at an urgent protest at 5 PM today, demanding immediate action to hold Trump accountable—click here to find an event near you!

When Richard Nixon fired Archibald Cox from the Watergate investigation, it became a tipping-point moment for lawmakers in his own party to finally decide that they had to act or risk forfeiting our democracy. It’s up to us to make Trump’s firing of Mueller into the moment our lawmakers wake up and prevent Trump from putting himself above the law.

Thanks for all you do.

Technically, yes, he has the power to fire the special counsel, just has he technically had the power to fire James Comey and Sally Yates and several other government officials.

HOWEVER - if he fired the special counsel or the assistant attorney general or the attorney general in order to shut down this investigation, that would be an abuse of power which would qualify as a high crime and thus be subject to impeachment.

That’s the game that Trump is playing, he just doesn’t realize it.

I wonder who didn’t see this coming?
Heartbroken husband files $20 million lawsuit after wife is killed in home explosion

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
The husband of the woman killed in the March 27 house explosion in Tech Terrace shared his memories of the event that killed his wife, as he and his attorney announced a wrongful death lawsuit on Monday.
…..
Their neighbor, 72-year-old John Fleming, was killed in the blast. His wife, Candace Chase, was seriously injured and is still in serious condition in the hospital. The lawsuit is seeking $20 million from Chase.

According to the lawsuit, the Gelcas saw bright flashes coming from their neighbors’ house and the house was engulfed in flames. The lawsuit says the Gelcas grabbed a water hose to slow the spread of the fire when a large explosion happened at their neighbors’ home. A gas cylinder flew from the house, striking Rodica, killing her. Razvan was also struck by flying debris. After the fire, multiple large gas cylinders littered the neighboring yard.

The lawsuit says Chase and Fleming were hoarders and self-proclaimed inventors and their property was littered with rubbage.

Rubbage? Turns out it’s legit, though generally obsolete and now daletical.
