Yet Another Exceptional NPR Tiny Desk Concert: Jorge Drexler

April 13, 2018 | Felix Contreras — Jorge Drexler is a poet with a gift for song. The Uruguayan singer-songwriter, like the iconic Latin American lyricists of the past (Mercedes Sosa, Victor Jara and Silvio Rodriguez, to name just a few), has that rare ability to surround multi-layered prose with music that lends an even deeper resonance to the words.

Drexler has his share of fans here in the U.S., mostly Latin American expats and others whose grasp of the language allows them to appreciate the nuances of his storytelling. But, as if often the case with music performed in languages other than English, audiences here sometimes miss out on an emotional connection with artists they would otherwise celebrate if they only knew what they were singing.

So, we decided to do something about that with Jorge Drexler’s appearance at the Tiny Desk. With the cooperation of the artist, we translated Drexler’s thoughtful and playful ruminations on the human condition, and included them as subtitles.

Those clever lyrics wouldn’t hit as hard if not for Drexler’s backing band of magicians. The mix of guitarists and percussionists conjured a stunning cloud of sound that allowed Drexler to take flight, like the existential dreamer that he is.

Sad, but thanks for bringing this up.

The past slips away, often silently.

This, btw, is why professional genealogists always encourage people to interview the oldest relative. They will have information, usual not written down, about the family that, once they are gone, is totally gone.

Yes, so true. My parents are dead and what’s left of my aunts and uncles are in Canada. My mother’s side of the family was huge and there is lots of history there but my dad’s side of the family is mysterious. His father died when he was 12, My grandmother was from England. I can’t find anything in Canadian records. I was just searching them tonight and found records that show my mother’s parents got married a week after my aunt was born. It was 1915, WWI might have played a part.

…and here I always thought my dad’s side of the family were the bohemians.

One of my best college experiences was an oral history project for which we interviewed people who were around a hundred years old at the time (mid 1970s). One gentleman told us about the first time he had seen electric lights, at a county fair in 1882. “You can’t imagine what they look like to someone who has never seen them before.” A lady told us about her first experience with a telephone. This was in 1886, when she was 10 years old. She was with her family at a hotel. Her father had called the family lawyer to arrange an appointment, then allowed her to speak briefly to him. She hung up and asked, “Papa, is that man really a mile away?”

I never met my maternal grandfather, my grandma was sent over from Croatia to Cleveland around 1912 to marry him, she had my mother and Aunt Helen with him and then ran off with a boarder in my house and had my Uncle Gabe. He was the fellow I knew as grandpa.
I was aware that my grandma had been divorced and that he was actually my step-grandfather but was unaware of the other circumstances until much later in life…

my mother described going to silent films when she was young (she was born in 1918) and how for the benefit of the illiterate, the audience would read the captions out loud “OH JOHN! I LOVE YOU!!!” followed by whispers of it then being translated into a dozen various languages for the benefit of all the non-English speakers among them…

For instance, I don’t know how my parents met, and I didn’t ask my mother before she passed away. I know before they met they had ended up in the same town (for different reasons), but that’s it. And now there is no one around who would know this thing, even my one remaining aunt who is a paternal aunt and was probably not privy to this information given the difference in age between her and my father.

Fujiya Market was a renowned Japanese market on the corner of Virgil and Clinton. The store opened in 1932 at a time when the neighborhood had a large Japanese-American population. In fact, Virgil Village was once called J-Flats. The market was known for amazing sashimi and a variety of Japanese goods. When the neighborhood became predominantly Latinx, they began carrying products like tortillas as well. Five years ago Fujiya closed its doors after 80 years in business. Where the market once stood, there’s a grocery store and carnicería called Osi Foodmart which caters to the Latinx population. Back when Payson, Arizona had a population of only around 5,000, it was too small to support both a Chinese and a Mexican. I remember stopping at Pedro Wong’s Mexican and Chinese food. I had tacos, my buddy ordered an egg roll.

PS I just checked, Raymond “Pedro” Wong died in 2016. I am sure that Food Heaven was holding a concession open for him.

Without getting into detail, which I may do later, but if I do so it will have to be sort of lengthy given the nature of the beast, the key problem regarding otherwise-thought-of-as-intelligent people believing in creationism is one of our old friend, cognitive dissonance.

The new paper fails in many ways, the most prominent being that their claim of “scientific reasoning” is based on a very narrow, and insufficient, understanding of what “scientific” really means.

There is also the problem of “reasoning”, given the now known inherent problems with anything resembling IQ tests, and one of the measuring tools the authors of the paper use, the “Lawson’s Classroom Test of Formal Reasoning”, comes under criticism for several reasons.

You can take a version of the test online, here: colorado.edu

I recall meeting a mathematics doctoral candidate who tells me that he believed in Jesus because of how all of the Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled in the New Testament.

I did not even bother to broach the possibility that the NT might have been “tweaked” to fit the OT, as that was something he obviously could not accept.

Had the OT been lost and forgotten and rediscovered only after the OT was written, then he might have had a case, but that was never the case.

What the NT writers did is take various bits and pieces of the prophetic books and arbitrarily assigned them to Jesus. When one reads the quotes in context they are either not prophecies at all, or they are prophecies related to very specific events that by that time had already come to pass.

Now, such “midrashic” interpretations were arguably within the Jewish tradition, and indeed some of the out-of-context verses used to support Jesus were also seen as messianic by other Jewish sects, so the NT writers weren’t unique here. But the fact remains - if you can cherrypick various unrelated verses out of their context, you can postdict anyone.

Mathematicians, in my experience, are more widely distributed in various beliefs than physicists.

Then again, math is not science, something over which various philosophy students can argue, but which is fairly well established as a precept among scientists.

Indeed, it is becoming clear that one of the failings of string theorists, M-theorists, multiverse-theorists, etc., is that they’ve gone astray by thinking their math is indeed physics.

I did not even argue with the fellow that one cannot take a subjective interpretation of Scriptural events and simply assign them to a mathematical formula (which was actually part of his argument), and that although he might have been a sound mathematician, he obviously failed Symbolic Logic.

And now there is no one around who would know this thing, even my one remaining aunt who is a paternal aunt and was probably not privy to this information given the difference in age between her and my father.

In my case, it’s how my father’s parents met. My dad told me “when I was old enough to understand” that his father married at 17 to a woman about his age, and they had a son. For reasons lost in the shrouds of time, the couple did not get along and then my gf met my gm somehow and soon my uncle and father came along. But, dad said, grandpa did not divorce his first wife and lived with my grandma in a common-law marriage. For that reason, their house was deeded to her alone. My grandparents burned all the correspondence between them, so even my dad was unsure how they met and under what circumstances they came to be a couple. I have some suspicions, but we may never know the exact details.

Whilst doing my genealogical research, I came across an adopted daughter of grandpa and his first wife in the census records. He apparently doted on her, and in his notebooks I found records of money being sent to support her and the first wife. Soon after, the great-granddaughter of that child found me online, and we discovered we had the exact same photos of her as a baby in Quebec and a teenager in New Jersey. The girl was either orphaned and adopted by a doctor then boarding with my grandfather and wife #1, or as we suspect, was born out of wedlock and taken in by the doctor (or was perhaps the doctor’s own daughter?) to be subsequently adopted by my grandparents. Her mother is unknown, but judging from the girl’s appearance in the photos, the mother could have been First Nations.

What stories these people could tell, if they were only alive to do it.

Even more ominously, it is also Mohammed’s birthday, as well as Bettie Page’s so we have communism, Islam, and wild women all covered (or un-covered in Bettie’s case). What’s it about?

Space opera with political overtones. In the not-so-distant future, the solar system has been colonized, but Earth (the UN) and Mars are not getting along, and the Belters have formed a loose coalition to struggle against the inner planets exploiting them. Meanwhile, some kind of alien life form has entered the system, and is being weaponized by a rich dude and a team of mad scientists. Things go bad, and the multi-national (Earth, Mars and Belter) crew of a ship are caught up in it, and end up the protagonists of the series.

The acting is pretty solid and the sets and SFX are almost realistic. No fancy FTL drives here. Just plain old reaction drives. Give it a shot.

I was in 8th grade for the first Earth Day. It was a big thing in the East Bay and particularly in California Schools. I did a Sacramento River Delta water quality measurement as part of the gifted student program. We went out on a boat in the delta and tested the water at various locations. That formed the basis for water quality regulations for the whole central valley water system. Delta Smelt FTW.

The bacteria is typically found in fecal matter and can enter local waterways through domestic or wild animal waste, sewage overflows, illegal trash dumping and storm water systems. Most strains don’t pose a threat to humans, but high levels of E. coli found in Sacramento’s rivers and streams have concerned officials enough to warn swimmers about potential health risks.

Tiscornia Beach, near Discovery Park where the American and Sacramento rivers flow together, exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency’s recreational safety threshold in seven of 11 tests conducted by the Central Valley Regional Water Quality Board this year.

Dave B was never my taste in Jazz, I really only like the Miles Davis stable of musicians and those who followed up and descended from him (to which Charles can claim he is third generation, having played with Stanley Clarke who played with Chick Corea who played with Miles)

I lived with some hard-core jazz students at Indiana University in Bloomington and one of them sat me down and pointed out that the root of all jazz is still frigging 12-bar blues and if you know how to listen, it is still in there somewhere.

There’s my problem, timing and notes and frequencies, music in general, are out of my grasp. I can enjoy it, but I can’t fathom how to make it. My 3rd grade trumpet teacher said I should never be allowed to handle a musical instrument. I concurred.

I do not read music but I play and have an ear for basic musical theory. Just listen to any 12 bar blues standard from “You Really Shook Me” to “Crossroads” or any other blues standard and try to hear where it is hiding in a million other derivative songs.

You may find of interest, or not, this lecture from Perimeter given in 2014: Can Quantum Correlations be Explained Causally?

There is a strong correlation between the sun rising and the rooster crowing, but to say that the one causes the other is to say more. In particular, it says that making the rooster crow early will not precipitate an early dawn, whereas making the sun rise early (for instance, by moving the rooster eastward) can lead to some early crowing. Intervening upon the natural course of events in this manner is a good way of discovering causal relations. Sometimes, however, we can’t intervene, or we’d prefer not to. For instance, in trying to determine whether smoking causes lung cancer, we’d prefer not to force any would-be nonsmokers to smoke. Fortunately, there are some clever tricks that allow us to extract information about what causes what entirely from features of the observed correlations. One of these tricks was discovered by the physicist John Bell in 1964. In a groundbreaking paper, he used it to demonstrate the seeming impossibility of providing a causal explanation of certain quantum correlations. This revealed a fundamental tension between quantum theory and Einstein’s theory of relativity —the two central pillars of modern physics. It is a tension that is still with us today.

It’s not too heady… it was part of the 2014 series for the annual gathering of high-school students, from around the world, which Perimeter puts on for those who are thinking about studying physics. Not much math, but a lot of thinking.

I remember when Miriam Makeba had this hit.

[Embedded content]

Video

The Pink Martini cover is great, but the singer can’t quite get Miriam’s click — that champagne cork popping sound. It’s transliterated by “q” usually, but it’s not all like a /k/ or /kw/ sound.

More details here:
csmonitor.com

I lived in Pretoria for a year and tried to learn the clicks from native speakers. I can get the Xhosa “c” and “x” clicks, but my “q” click is about as bad as the Pink Martini singer’s. So I sympathize with her.

4 killed at Waffle House in Tennessee
A bystander wrestled the shooter’s gun away but the shooter himself got away.

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding 29-year-old Travis Reinking of Morton, Illinois. Police said the gunman arrived in a vehicle registered to Reinking, though the gunman was last seen walking away from the scene nude.

The shooter was initially wearing nothing but a green jacket, which he shed in getting away.

Ascending into hell?

Where does Roger get that? Maybe he read it in Two Corinthians.

Because his idea of the divine is so twisted that to him heaven is hell and hell (where his true Lord Satan is) is heaven? Only thing that makes slight sense to me is that he’d believe something that silly.

I think I’ll just stick to trying to do what’s right…

re: #44 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I recall meeting a mathematics doctoral candidate who tells me that he believed in Jesus because of how all of the Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled in the New Testament.

I did not even bother to broach the possibility that the NT might have been “tweaked” to fit the OT, as that was something he obviously could not accept.

Had the OT been lost and forgotten and rediscovered only after the OT was written, then he might have had a case, but that was never the case.

Nor, I would bet, did you tell him how all the traditional interpretations of the ones that others considered prophecy did not really fit Jesus ben Joseph? Or that the rest weren’t considered prophecy anymore because they’d already been fullfilled (much of the Isiah materials)? Humans do strange things to the divine that even some of us who believe can find laughable.

Greets and saluts from the Resistance in the NYC metro area. Taking a step back from the politics for the moment, I just wanted to share that I got the opportunity to recently see Hello Dolly on Broadway with Bernadette Peters and Victor Garber in the leads, and it’s frankly one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long long time.

Everything about the show works. There was no second act letdown (many shows pack the best songs/routines in the first act, and the second act is almost an afterthought). The ensemble had awesome voices and the dancing/choreography was great. The sets were amazing and conveyed every aspect of the story very well.

Peters has an undeniable stage presence, and Garber shone as he returned to his stage roots (many recognize him for his role in Legends of Tomorrow or Alias, but he cut his chops on the stage in shows like Assassins and Sweeney Todd, etc.

The supporting roles were also very well cast and everyone looked like they had fun doing the show.

All in all, it was a totally enjoyable show; and they also just announced that Bette Midler is returning to the show until it ends at the end of the summer.

It hit me when I was taking to a younger coworker the other day whose from Ukraine that I was born into the world where there was still a USSR. I even remember the early atlases I had still having the USSR. But two other things since people like to tease me about being a kid. My Dad’s one grandfather was born before the telephone in 1874. His other was born in 1876 in Germany just five years after the formation of the modern German nation state. If you’re wondering why my great grandfather’s have such early birth years, consider my father is the youngest son of a youngest child and second youngest along with my dad being relatively old for a first time father. I’m descended from quite a few youngest children hence why my tree’s generations are a bit wacky.

What I want to know is why shouldn’t they have? Everything was true she said about Trump. And GOP voters nominated him. And Bernie stayed in knowing there was no realistic path to the nomination & still complains about the DNC despite them giving his way on the platform which wasn’t a total bad thing when it came to some of the ideas. I really hope Sanders is a non factor in 2020 but I worry I’m wrong because he does have a legit following by people who unfortunately can’t see his faults as both a man and leader.

If A Parent’s Day Job Is Running For Congress, Can The Campaign Pay For Child Care?

“My mother is a teacher. She comes home at 3:30 every afternoon, and she would watch my children from 3:30 on, and that’s when I’d start consulting,” Grechen Shirley said.

But then last year she started thinking she might want to run for Congress, as a Democrat in New York’s Second Congressional District. That presented a problem.

“I had thought about it for much of last year, but I decided with two small children I wouldn’t be able to do that,” Grechen Shirley said. “There were so many barriers, and one of those barriers was child care.”
She eventually decided to run anyway and use campaign funds to pay for child care. Now, she’s asking the Federal Election Commission to rule whether that’s allowed.

They need to read Einstein’s book on Relativity.
The first chapter talks about geometry and how, why it seems to do a good job of explaining the world, it is not science, because it hasn’t been put through experimentation to see if it’s valid.

an article from the right-wing newsmax site. I check in there to see what the latest GOP talking points are (they are not quite as toxic or offensive as Fox) and found this rather damning assessment of the GOP on the editorial page:

The GOP High-Water Mark?

… Republicans won all elected branches of the federal government in 2016. But the initial ecstasy over Trump “signing their stuff” has given way to the reality that they don’t have stuff to send him.

Republicans couldn’t roll back Obamacare, in part because the party hadn’t thought through what the Republican alternative was…

…Maybe Republicans somehow hold on to the House this fall …At the very least, though, Republicans are going to lose their functional majority. The question at this juncture is, How would anyone notice?

I like Anne Laurie’s title about Amy Chozick’s announcement of her new book:

Like Every Other Pundit, Amy Chozick Will Never Forgive Hillary Clinton for Amy Chozick’s Mistakes

From the excerpts I’ve seen, Chozick’s new “tell entirely too much” book reads scarily like it was written by a teenage girl looking to pick a fight with her stepmother. Selfish beeyotch kept lecturing me about how that new boy ‘couldn’t be trusted’, so of course I *had* to go to the party with him, and now that I’m stumbling home barefoot with a roofie hangover, I want the world to know that it is ALL HER FAULT!

4 killed at Waffle House in Tennessee
A bystander wrestled the shooter’s gun away but the shooter himself got away.

The shooter was initially wearing nothing but a green jacket, which he shed in getting away.

Ivana Trump, in media interview, says Don Jr won’t have trouble finding a new spouse but Vanessa will: “Who is going to date and marry the woman who has five children?”

In our modern society, a “single woman with five children” is generally the equivalent of a “woman living at or below the poverty level”.

I do not think that will be the case with Vanessa.

Fox News host Sean Hannity used his entire Thursday night segment to explore secret links between Hillary Clinton and Avennati, describing the attorney as a “paid crisis actor” as well as “a clear descendant of immigrants.” According to Hannity, the attack has all the earmarks of a “false flag” operation choreographed by the FBI.

But again, we are on our way to moving outright fascism and white supremacism from their rightful place as things that are totally anathema to humanity, decency and civilization to being mere positions along the political spectrum that deserve to be tolerated as “alternate points of view”.

These are things that good and decent people have fought and bled to prevent and now we are being expected to treat them with some sort of deference.

article about this from a year ago:
The Untold Story: Trump’s ‘Sleepy Eyes’ Insult A Jewish Slur Of Nazi Origin

The term “sleepy eyes” originated from Nazi propaganda as a way of identifying Jewish people. But its use became more widespread over the last few decades, when white supremacist media like Stormfront began using it.

Today, the “sleepy eyes” description is a common dog-whistle for the white nationalist movement.

For instance, there are countless articles published online by hate websites about how to spot someone who is Jewish.

These articles point to the person’s eyes, and they often describe them as “sleepy.” Examples can be easily found on sites like Stormfront; however, as a policy, we will not link to hate sites.

I had a conversation with a ccw guy I know from out of state. He won’t visit LA cause no gun. I was explaining how many times somebody does have a gun and simply can’t fire, probably won’t even clear holster given an urban crowd, glass storefront and cars full of uninvolved people all over the place. He had to agree at least in part. By the numbers of big shootings that have happened in public spaces where ccw is not at all uncommon very un-like Los Angeles, they run or walk away with everyone else. The gun stayed put.

Why should anyone go out of their way to “understand” a bigot who subscribes to BS conspiracy theories?

again, there was a time when we saw Nazis and White Supremacists as people who were an affront to American values and everything we have stood for and even fought against.

Now we are expected to just look on them as “differing viewpoints”.

Yep a lot of my classmates including myself had grandfather’s or grand uncles that were part of the Allies that defeated the Nazis. Hell I even have more distant relatives that were Partisans. We all agreed that the Nazis sucked even if we had disagreements about other things. That’s changed unfortunately.

Would visiting a US internment camp from WW2 like Manzanar have a greater effect?

With a German one it can sort of be written off that it was the Nazis doing it. With a US one it hits a bit closer to home though I’m sure some would manage to solely blame it on the Democrats, FDR, or the Japanese themselves.

Germany has taken on record numbers of refugees, which I find to be an admirable act. If they made any mistake in doing so, it was in not pressuring the rest of Europe to do take more; as it is those other nations really took undue advantage of Germany.

I would have found it reasonable for Germany to insist that the refugee issue be approached as an EU issue to be dealt with jointly by all member states, and agreed to take a maximum percentage based on their share of the population and/or GDP, which would still have left them with the biggest share.

Unfortunately, they did not and it has led to a bit of a backlash and contributed to the right-wing nationalist anti-immigrant AfD getting 13% of the vote and seats in Parliament.

A common complaint heard here is “We don’t have money for our own homeless and poor, how come we are taking on all these refugees?” to which a German leftist politician answered, “Even without refugees, we still wouldn’t find enough money for our poor and homeless!”

Much like when “Mighty Mitt Saved the Olympics”…

Being the face of the Olympics even extended to Romney having his image used on a series of promotional buttons with slogans including “Hey, Mitt, we love you!” and even one with Romney as a superhero wrapped in the American flag.

when Mitt Romney ran the Salt Lake Olympics much of its official memorabilia was manufactured overseas, including a 9/11 commemorative pin and another fashioned in the shape of Romney’s head.

Salt Lake 2002 Olympics paraphernalia obtained by ABC bears “Made in China” and “Made in Bangladesh” stamps.

The church is going with the “he repented, what’s the problem?” stance. The problem is Les Hughey didn’t apologize to the women, who, because they were underage and because he was their youth pastor, can be considered victims. So he’s going to be on a leave of absence, which, in my mind, is completely unacceptable.

They’re also not going to be thrilled about Fox 10 being out there or me talking to the Arizona Republic.
