Yet Another Exceptional NPR Tiny Desk Concert: Jorge Drexler

April 13, 2018 | Felix Contreras — Jorge Drexler is a poet with a gift for song. The Uruguayan singer-songwriter, like the iconic Latin American lyricists of the past (Mercedes Sosa, Victor Jara and Silvio Rodriguez, to name just a few), has that rare ability to surround multi-layered prose with music that lends an even deeper resonance to the words.

Drexler has his share of fans here in the U.S., mostly Latin American expats and others whose grasp of the language allows them to appreciate the nuances of his storytelling. But, as if often the case with music performed in languages other than English, audiences here sometimes miss out on an emotional connection with artists they would otherwise celebrate if they only knew what they were singing.

So, we decided to do something about that with Jorge Drexler’s appearance at the Tiny Desk. With the cooperation of the artist, we translated Drexler’s thoughtful and playful ruminations on the human condition, and included them as subtitles.

Those clever lyrics wouldn’t hit as hard if not for Drexler’s backing band of magicians. The mix of guitarists and percussionists conjured a stunning cloud of sound that allowed Drexler to take flight, like the existential dreamer that he is.

Yes, so true. My parents are dead and what’s left of my aunts and uncles are in Canada. My mother’s side of the family was huge and there is lots of history there but my dad’s side of the family is mysterious. His father died when he was 12, My grandmother was from England. I can’t find anything in Canadian records. I was just searching them tonight and found records that show my mother’s parents got married a week after my aunt was born. It was 1915, WWI might have played a part.

…and here I always thought my dad’s side of the family were the bohemians.

One of my best college experiences was an oral history project for which we interviewed people who were around a hundred years old at the time (mid 1970s). One gentleman told us about the first time he had seen electric lights, at a county fair in 1882. “You can’t imagine what they look like to someone who has never seen them before.” A lady told us about her first experience with a telephone. This was in 1886, when she was 10 years old. She was with her family at a hotel. Her father had called the family lawyer to arrange an appointment, then allowed her to speak briefly to him. She hung up and asked, “Papa, is that man really a mile away?”

I never met my maternal grandfather, my grandma was sent over from Croatia to Cleveland around 1912 to marry him, she had my mother and Aunt Helen with him and then ran off with a boarder in my house and had my Uncle Gabe. He was the fellow I knew as grandpa.
I was aware that my grandma had been divorced and that he was actually my step-grandfather but was unaware of the other circumstances until much later in life…

my mother described going to silent films when she was young (she was born in 1918) and how for the benefit of the illiterate, the audience would read the captions out loud “OH JOHN! It never ceases to get me to pause, to realize how little we know of the generation before us.

For instance, I don’t know how my parents met, and I didn’t ask my mother before she passed away. I know before they met they had ended up in the same town (for different reasons), but that’s it. And now there is no one around who would know this thing, even my one remaining aunt who is a paternal aunt and was probably not privy to this information given the difference in age between her and my father.

Fujiya Market was a renowned Japanese market on the corner of Virgil and Clinton. The store opened in 1932 at a time when the neighborhood had a large Japanese-American population. In fact, Virgil Village was once called J-Flats. The market was known for amazing sashimi and a variety of Japanese goods. When the neighborhood became predominantly Latinx, they began carrying products like tortillas as well. Five years ago Fujiya closed its doors after 80 years in business. Where the market once stood, there’s a grocery store and carnicería called Osi Foodmart which caters to the Latinx population. Back when Payson, Arizona had a population of only around 5,000, it was too small to support both a Chinese and a Mexican. I remember stopping at Pedro Wong’s Mexican and Chinese food. I had tacos, my buddy ordered an egg roll.

PS I just checked, Raymond “Pedro” Wong died in 2016. I am sure that Food Heaven was holding a concession open for him.

Without getting into detail, which I may do later, but if I do so it will have to be sort of lengthy given the nature of the beast, the key problem regarding otherwise-thought-of-as-intelligent people believing in creationism is one of our old friend, cognitive dissonance.

The new paper fails in many ways, the most prominent being that their claim of “scientific reasoning” is based on a very narrow, and insufficient, understanding of what “scientific” really means.

There is also the problem of “reasoning”, given the now known inherent problems with anything resembling IQ tests, and one of the measuring tools the authors of the paper use, the “Lawson’s Classroom Test of Formal Reasoning”, comes under criticism for several reasons.

I recall meeting a mathematics doctoral candidate who tells me that he believed in Jesus because of how all of the Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled in the New Testament.

I did not even bother to broach the possibility that the NT might have been “tweaked” to fit the OT, as that was something he obviously could not accept.

Had the OT been lost and forgotten and rediscovered only after the OT was written, then he might have had a case, but that was never the case.

Mathematicians, in my experience, are more widely distributed in various beliefs than physicists.

Then again, math is not science, something over which various philosophy students can argue, but which is fairly well established as a precept among scientists.

Indeed, it is becoming clear that one of the failings of string theorists, M-theorists, multiverse-theorists, etc., is that they’ve gone astray by thinking their math is indeed physics.

In my case, it’s how my father’s parents met. My dad told me “when I was old enough to understand” that his father married at 17 to a woman about his age, and they had a son. For reasons lost in the shrouds of time, the couple did not get along and then my gf met my gm somehow and soon my uncle and father came along. But, dad said, grandpa did not divorce his first wife and lived with my grandma in a common-law marriage. For that reason, their house was deeded to her alone. My grandparents burned all the correspondence between them, so even my dad was unsure how they met and under what circumstances they came to be a couple. I have some suspicions, but we may never know the exact details.

Whilst doing my genealogical research, I came across an adopted daughter of grandpa and his first wife in the census records. He apparently doted on her, and in his notebooks I found records of money being sent to support her and the first wife. Soon after, the great-granddaughter of that child found me online, and we discovered we had the exact same photos of her as a baby in Quebec and a teenager in New Jersey. The girl was either orphaned and adopted by a doctor then boarding with my grandfather and wife #1, or as we suspect, was born out of wedlock and taken in by the doctor (or was perhaps the doctor’s own daughter?) to be subsequently adopted by my grandparents. Her mother is unknown, but judging from the girl’s appearance in the photos, the mother could have been First Nations.

What stories these people could tell, if they were only alive to do it.

What’s it about?

Space opera with political overtones. In the not-so-distant future, the solar system has been colonized, but Earth (the UN) and Mars are not getting along, and the Belters have formed a loose coalition to struggle against the inner planets exploiting them. Meanwhile, some kind of alien life form has entered the system, and is being weaponized by a rich dude and a team of mad scientists. Things go bad, and the multi-national (Earth, Mars and Belter) crew of a ship are caught up in it, and end up the protagonists of the series.

The acting is pretty solid and the sets and SFX are almost realistic. No fancy FTL drives here. Just plain old reaction drives. Give it a shot.

I did a Sacramento River Delta water quality measurement as part of the gifted student program. We went out on a boat in the delta and tested the water at various locations. New tests taken at one of Sacramento’s most popular public beaches recorded the lowest levels of E. coli in the water all year.

I do not read music but I play and have an ear for basic musical theory. Just listen to any 12 bar blues standard from “You Really Shook Me” to “Crossroads” or any other blues standard and try to hear where it is hiding in a million other derivative songs.

I recall meeting a mathematics doctoral candidate who tells me that he believed in Jesus because of how all of the Old Testament prophecies have been fulfilled in the New Testament.

I did not even bother to broach the possibility that the NT might have been “tweaked” to fit the OT, as that was something he obviously could not accept.

Had the OT been lost and forgotten and rediscovered only after the OT was written, then he might have had a case, but that was never the case.

Nor, I would bet, did you tell him how all the traditional interpretations of the ones that others considered prophecy did not really fit Jesus ben Joseph? Or that the rest weren’t considered prophecy anymore because they’d already been fullfilled (much of the Isiah materials)? Humans do strange things to the divine that even some of us who believe can find laughable.

Taking a step back from the politics for the moment, I just wanted to share that I got the opportunity to recently see Hello Dolly on Broadway with Bernadette Peters and Victor Garber in the leads, and it’s frankly one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long long time.

Everything about the show works. There was no second act letdown (many shows pack the best songs/routines in the first act, and the second act is almost an afterthought). The ensemble had awesome voices and the dancing/choreography was great. The sets were amazing and conveyed every aspect of the story very well.

Peters has an undeniable stage presence, and Garber shone as he returned to his stage roots (many recognize him for his role in Legends of Tomorrow or Alias, but he cut his chops on the stage in shows like Assassins and Sweeney Todd, etc.

The supporting roles were also very well cast and everyone looked like they had fun doing the show.

All in all, it was a totally enjoyable show; and they also just announced that Bette Midler is returning to the show until it ends at the end of the summer.

You all were talking about perspective given the passing of the world’s oldest woman. Couple quick thoughts. It hit me when I was taking to a younger coworker the other day whose from Ukraine that I was born into the world where there was still a USSR. I even remember the early atlases I had still having the USSR. But two other things since people like to tease me about being a kid. My Dad’s one grandfather was born before the telephone in 1874. His other was born in 1876 in Germany just five years after the formation of the modern German nation state. If you’re wondering why my great grandfather’s have such early birth years, consider my father is the youngest son of a youngest child and second youngest along with my dad being relatively old for a first time father. I’m descended from quite a few youngest children hence why my tree’s generations are a bit wacky.

What I want to know is why shouldn’t they have? Everything was true she said about Trump. And GOP voters nominated him. I really hope Sanders is a non factor in 2020 but I worry I’m wrong because he does have a legit following by people who unfortunately can’t see his faults as both a man and leader.

Then again, math is not science, something over which various philosophy students can argue, but which is fairly well established as a precept among scientists.

Indeed, it is becoming clear that one of the failings of string theorists, M-theorists, multiverse-theorists, etc., is that they’ve gone astray by thinking their math is indeed physics.

They need to read Einstein’s book on Relativity.
The first chapter talks about geometry and how, why it seems to do a good job of explaining the world, it is not science, because it hasn’t been put through experimentation to see if it’s valid.

I had a conversation with a ccw guy I know from out of state. He won’t visit LA cause no gun. I was explaining how many times somebody does have a gun and simply can’t fire, probably won’t even clear holster given an urban crowd, glass storefront and cars full of uninvolved people all over the place. He had to agree at least in part. By the numbers of big shootings that have happened in public spaces where ccw is not at all uncommon very un-like Los Angeles, they run or walk away with everyone else. The gun stayed put.

Yep a lot of my classmates including myself had grandfather’s or grand uncles that were part of the Allies that defeated the Nazis. Hell I even have more distant relatives that were Partisans. The problem is Les Hughey didn’t apologize to the women, who, because they were underage and because he was their youth pastor, can be considered victims. So he’s going to be on a leave of absence, which, in my mind, is completely unacceptable.

They’re also not going to be thrilled about Fox 10 being out there or me talking to the Arizona Republic.
