This strikes me as wishful thinking on the part of said analysts.

The Chinese are not idiots. They know that the odds of Trump actually managing to enact any diplomatic act, much less the most difficult diplomatic act of the past 50 years, are zero. They didn’t have to get involved or interfere.

Lots of money & high tech in the south, lots of low cost labor in the north (that would still be a better living than they’d ever known)? Of course the Chinese are terrified of a reunified Korea. Make the old tiger economies look like cubs.

The minute you open North Korea you have a massive (and expensive) humanitarian crisis.

Labor’s cheap in DPRK because human beings literally have no value.

Giving them value - any - will still step them up from where they are by more they can imagine and be cheaper than the labor in the south. Factories in the north will be a capitalist paradise for at least two generations.

Border Patrol union calls Trump’s National Guard deployment ‘colossal waste’

A month after President Trump called for sending National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, the head of the national Border Patrol union called the deployment “a colossal waste of resources.”

“We have seen no benefit,” said Brandon Judd, president of the union that represents 15,000 agents, the National Border Patrol Council.

The criticism is a dramatic departure for the group, which endorsed Trump’s candidacy for president and has praised his border security efforts, including National Guard deployments.

This Christian sure knows we have a duty to take in everyone.

Every. Fucking. One.

That’s straight from his words.

He said Nothing about abortion. Or gays. But he did say “for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

Which is just absolutely ridiculous. If he’d allowed Kim to blow up the talks, he could have at least taken the moral high ground (what remained of it), claiming that Kim’s actions had precluded any talk of peaceful resolution and strengthened his hand in calling for sanctions and/or military action.

Instead, he rushed to be the guy who blew up the talks and now makes Kim look like the sane one, totally undermining his own argument that North Korea can’t be negotiated with when he’s the one who flipped the table over before storming out of the room like a jilted ex.

teleskiguy  May 24, 2018 • 8:45:23pm

Today I went for a drive. I dropped off my dead iPhone 4S at a phone repair place the next town over (they’re replacing the battery, $45, it offsets me buying a new phone until Apple stops updating that phone), then went to the weed store, bought a couple of joints, and drove towards the east side of Independence Pass. It opened at noon today. On the uphill east side I watched an SUV with California plates pass an unmarked police truck. I knew it was police because I could see his assault rifle through his back window. That police truck pursued him, dude from California gunned it up a big narrow hill, thinking he was racing or something. Mind you, this is a narrow road with big BIG drop offs. The cop pursued him - probably a couple of miles - until he found a safe place to turn on his lights and pull him over. I said to myself “that guy is getting pulled over.” And he proceeded to go as fast as he could up this really big hill with a cop behind him! The scenery was stunning as always (though the snow is disappearing fast, and that’s not good), lunch in Aspen was delicious (I went to The Red Onion and had a turkey sandwich, with some bourbon, they have over 300 whiskeys to choose from. I had some stuff called Blade & Bow and it was delicious), but that was the highlight of my day.

re: #54 Unshaken Defiance

Still don’t know how to articulate this, but—

this is part of the larger pattern of seeming being substituted for being.

The other day I observed that that there’s this disconnect about signifier/signified: the latter is dismissed even as the former is held to still have the value of the latter. This is a different version of the same issue: symbolic actions are being swapped in where actual long-terms plan that respond to examination and change as needed.

It’s a theater state, constructed by a culture that values “theater”—the evocation of shallow sentiment…schmaltz, bathos, ressentiment, smugness…and banal concepts—at the expense of complexity and depth.

It’s a scam, a bait and switch, but in past it’s worked long enough to really fuck people up, sink nations caught up in the feelings, and put lots of heads on pikes.

We may have been a nation of questionable morals and ethics for a long time, but we’ve backslid in the truly monstrous in such a remarkably short time.

All because America hates minorities and Dems more than it loves anything else. And we have a significant percentage of erstwhile ‘allies’ who have decided that the Dem party is still public enemy number 1 over Trump and must be burnt asunder for the proper purity to defeat Trumpism.

All fucking hope is lost.

But see, unless this can be proven without a shadow of a doubt that this is all because of policies either written and enforced by Republicans, or enabled to be worse by Republicans, we can’t attribute it to them, and to do so is the very height of hyper-partisanship and will and should only drive away sane American voters.

Now if it was something Dems did, then it must be considered to be true until it is distinctly proven to be false, and even then, we must consider it simply ‘unconfirmed’ until further evidence comes, because Dems are forever suspicious and must be treated as forever suspicious, lest their inherent illegitimacy taint the entire political process.

In other words, IOKIYAR, uber alles.

I’ve only read the series once but it has stuck with me since. It’s the most detailed description of fatal domestic violence out there. They interview a woman whose last memory before being shot in the head (“literally right between the eyes” was how she described it) was her husband saying to her “If I can’t have you, no one can.” She miraculously survived. Her husband killed himself.

I’m a fortunate guy, friends hook me up with stuff I can learn on. Some of that is straight out commercial demos of high end gear I could never own. Arri makes amazing cinema cameras that go for budgets that could make a pentagon check writer blush. But the look… “Open gate” is a sensor that takes in the whole area all at once on the fly, not a strip scanned from top to bottom. The slo mo looks incredibly undistorted and languid. “Signature Prime” lenses are the latest.

Then you’ve proved you have more courage than I do. I don’t think I could read that if I had to for less than to save a life. In my little home town only one police officer has died in the line of duty - it was responding to a “domestic disturbance” at the women’s shelter that is now named for him.

Much more recently I had someone I thought I knew; someone I thought was a friend; who it turns out was a controlling SOB who found himself dying of disease. His wife had had enough of his crap and wanted out. He did the usual murder suicide shit. This was about two years ago. Every time I drive by where his store was I cuss the bastard out for not being the person I thought he was.

Authoritarians are terrified of ambiguity of meaning and subtlety. You can’t trust symbolism that isn’t part of a formal set. You can’t trust individual viewers to react how you want, if you don’t control the precise way they receive that art and “get” what it means.

Independent of the specifics of ideology, what ends up developing is a aesthetic that (1) crawls with pre-coded signifiers, (2) has a brutalist approach to commanding a specific reaction from the viewer, (3) is, within the cultural spectrum, trite and sentimental, (4) scared shitless of subjective value of art and thus incorporates a moral component to judgement of quality—decadence, degeneracy used to dismiss individualism and abstraction.

I mean, I’m just making that shit up on the fly, but I’d stand by it in general.

Also blatant:

Multiple moves to allocate the resources of the state only to supporters (tax codes that money blue money to red states, rural people who get exemptions from work requirements for TANF, eta: block grants and vouchers, anything that taxes regressively) while penalizing opposition, while presenting is as a recompense rather than spoils.

I mean, what’s been barely beneath the welfare queen rhetoric since the beginning is that some people are never deserving, and some other people are deserving, but the distinction has no formal structure other than allegiance. Formalizing that distinction—allocating the subsidization as much as possible to allies—has suddenly gotten more bold.

McConnell may be a weasel, but his statement that he supports the Mueller investigation is still important. It suggests that the GOP leadership is not going to just roll over and play dead if Trump tries any shenanigans to torpedo the investigation. It’s an old-school politician’s signal to Trump that he would not have the support of the leadership if Trump interferes with Mueller. Trump, being the dolt that he is, will not understand the signal and will probably do what he wants anyway.

Iran is in a grey area. The government now seems more concerned with political dissent than social dissent, and many Iranian movies deal with serious social issues rather unapologetically.

Well, at least some bit of good news (maybe):

Julian Assange’s nearly six-year refuge at the Ecuadorian embassy in London is in danger, opening the WikiLeaks founder to arrest by British authorities and potential extradition to the US, multiple sources with knowledge tell CNN.

While Assange has in the past claimed his position in the embassy was under threat, sources say his current situation is “unusually bad” and that he could leave the embassy “any day now,” either because he will be forced out or made to feel so restricted that he might choose to leave on his own. His position there is “in jeopardy,” one source familiar with the matter said.
Assange’s exit from the embassy could open a new phase for US investigators eager to find out what he knows.

Looks like the Ecuadorians have had their fill of his shit.

The North Korean government on Friday said it is still “willing to give the U.S. time and opportunities” to reconsider talks “at any time, at any format.” The statement was issued in response to Trump’s abrupt cancellation of the June summit between the two countries in the U.S. bid to get North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapon.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.

Weinstein surrendered to cops this morning and was charged on multiple counts. Good.

It’s something that should have happened years ago but for the fact that Weinstein’s fixers made sure it never got to this point.

Weinstein is hardly alone in employing fixers to keep criminal acts from being investigated or prosecuted.

Trump also had fixers protect him and his family. Manhattan prosecutors - including former DA Morgenthau and current DA Cy Vance have much to answer for on that too.

Trump doesn’t get that law enforcement can investigate criminal acts based on probable cause, including using confidential sources/informants. This is all standard operating procedure.

What’s unusual is that Trump surrounded himself with undeclared foreign agents, solicited criminal acts from foreign powers to help him win an election, and met with foreign nations to get that information and lied about each and every step of that process.

Now? He’s projecting his criminality on to not only Clinton and Obama, but the investigators and prosecutors.

Note too: he’s not claiming innocence. He’s protesting that he’s being caught doing the very things alleged.

What disturbs me as a white guy is knowing a lot of them look like me and if they see me probably think I think like them. I don’t really wear my liberalism on my clothing so to speak but I do try to in my professional capacity dealing with PoC and or immigrants let them know that I’m a warm and compassionate human being. We had an immigration case that we worked on. The other clerk helping me out was an immigrant and the client of course was too. Anyway, I’m sure that even if they did go to an alphabetical system, the GOP would make sure their slate of candidates were Abe Aaronson, Amy Abbott, Andres Aguilar, Anthony Adams, Alice Acton, etc…..

Mother Jones did a long story about #ChurchToo, which is bringing accountability to churches vis a vis ignoring and covering up sex abuse. It’s a great overview of what’s been happening

I’m just going to quote from the bit about Sovereign Grace, because I protest at a SG church on Sundays. But it goes way beyond this.

Rachael Denhollander, an evangelical and one of the first women to publicly accuse USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse, is now forcing the issue of child sex abuse at Sovereign Grace churches back into the spotlight long after the story faded from national attention a couple years ago—prompting loud, insistent calls for accountability. Pastor Mahaney of Sovereign Grace dropped out of the T4G (Together for the Gospel) conference this year, due to, he said in a statement, “the recent, renewed controversy.” (Sovereign Grace denies that it mishandled allegations of abuse and said in a statement to Mother Jones that the denomination “recognize[s] the critical importance of treating child sexual abuse seriously” and has taken steps to “better understand and address the risk of sexual abuse.”)

re: #338 JordanRules

It made kind of persona non grata at LGM…but that is why I object to law enforcement unions. (Eric Loomis over thinks the military should be unionized also, which I argued was utterly insane and probably unconstitutional)

Police and corrections unions have distorted application of criminal law and made oversight of their use of force almost meaningless, in addition to granting accused officers rights that are not available to other persons accused of crimes. Essentially, unions have managed to make police officers and (to a lesser extent) corrections officers a separate class of persons under the law.

Moreover, unions create a perverse parallel power structure and chain of command. This has been seen repeatedly in the NYPD, where open insubordination to civilian elected leadership was encouraged and countenanced by the union. In one notorious incident, an officer involved in an accidental fatal shooting of a man in a stairwell that he had been ordered to not enter chose to call his union leadership before calling medical aid for the man he shot. The NYPD “slowdown” a couple years ago is a larger illustration of how the union corrupted civilian control of an armed paramilitary force that is empowered to arrest or kill human beings based on merely stating “I felt threatened”.

Of course, in California, corrections officers get more and more and more prison beds to monitor while arguing against pot legalization (more crimes means more guards!) or home detention sentencing (more people kept in prison means more guards!).

Law enforcement unions regularly fight to gain advantage for their constituents at the expense of civilian control of armed agents of the state, basic human liberty and even lives. I would see them banned. That’s hard thing for me to say. I have belonged to unions. However, if you carry a gun and have the power to kill people or imprison them, your first and only loyalty must be to the rule of law and civilian leadership elected over you. There is no room for a union in that relationship and we cannot afford divided loyalty.

Speaking of names, all the Michael Cohens confuse me. The number of Michael Cohens in DjT’s orbit alone make for very tricky news reading.

I lived in a coed dorm for 3 years. One year, there were 6 Davids on my floor. Two with the same last name. And two phones in the stairwell where everybody got their calls, except for the rich kid who had his own landline (the only kind of line at the time) in his room. Once I answered the phone and was asked for David White. I said, ‘You want white David White, or black David White?’ He laughed, and specified. I don’t remember which it was.

Kevin Drumm referenced a tweet from someone I didn’t recognize, who made the point that percentage-wise MS-13 accounts for only 0.3% of murders or something and Drumm took offense at that, thinking it depicted a universal Liberal view that minimized MS-13.

I get where Drumm is coming from on this point—MS-13 is a problem here in the DC area, so irrespective of the actual percentages, context matters.

But labeling them all ‘animals’ as DJT did is really bottom feeder stuff that we should continue to call out, especially when the president is so, um,selective
when it comes to groups he criticizes and calls names.

MS-13 is most active on Long Island, around DC, and in California.

And yet, crime rates are down in all three. The threat posed by MS-13 is regularly overstated and used as exhibit A of illegal aliens engaging in violence by the GOP, all while the GOP ignores the garden variety violence of Americans against other Americans.

Agenda 21? That was the sinister conspiracy by UN-controlled Sinister Conspirators to turn the US into a European-style socialism-ridden hellhole by putting bike racks in American downtowns, right?

Oh. my. dog. I received a call like that when I was an intern for a Senator:

Lady called into the constituent services office for Mark Udall - (D-CO) and yelled this at me. I calmly told her that whomever told her that was lying (I was allowed a lot of flexibility when responding to people) and attempting to give her a red-herring to distract her from what - I have no idea. Went into great detail in how much the US gives to the UN and that the UN would not be able to break the sovereignty of the USA etc etc etc. The lady actually calmed down, agreed with me, and asked why the people lied to her. I said, “Ma’am, people who want to scare you into believing something is terrifying usually are doing so to hide what they are doing behind their back as they themselves have their own plan in doing what they happen to be railing against.”

One of the best phone calls from a RW individual I received as my year as an intern. Usually the RWNJs would just curse, say horrible racist crap, or - ya know - threaten the Senator.

OK. That makes way more sense.

Years ago, a neighboring group where I worked had three folks named Leslie, two gals and a guy. One day, tired of the confusion, the two female Leslie’s went to the male Leslie and told him that he was thenceforth to be called ‘Biff’. And that was how everybody in my group thereafter addressed him.

You’d have to ask Drum. He seems to be wallowing in guilt or something.

It does show the classic Democratic issues though. For some reason it has always been tough to get Democratic people to stand strong and hold to a message. Too many times it turns into an issue of being too mean or too strong and doesn’t look good.

And since there are so many various groups that are part of the Democratic Party, there is always someone that is offended by someone else.

Meanwhile Republican form gangs that go out and beat their messages into their followers and others. They turn elections into wars and send out their army.

There is a reason why Saul Alinsky’s Rules For Radicals stipulates that messaging should be absolutely on point about one thing and one thing only in a protest.

I have sent several missives to Rob Portman and Mitch McConnell reminding them their party is headed up by President Trump and they are all responsible for everything he does.

I cannot emphasize enough that we must hang Trump on the Republican party at every turn. They cannot be separated from Trump and no wiggle room can be given for anyone like a Jeff Flake that talks a good game but is too much a wimp to actually do anything.
