As for Christmas movies, how about Miracle on 34th Street? I haven’t watched it in years now, but it’s a cute and somewhat sappy flick.

No one has mentioned Die Hard. What is wrong with you people?

When Christmas Eve comes around there is only one movie that really brings out the Christmas spirit in me—John Waters “Female Trouble”. Such a wholesome story about a girl whose heart was broken because she didn’t get cha cha heels for Christmas!

re: #133 wheat-dogg, raker of forests, master of steam

Reading the original story now, I am not so sure Miss USA (from NEBRASKA, Anymouse!) was mocking Miss Vietnam or Miss Cambodia for their English abilities. Rather, she was trying in her clueless, white-bread way to express how difficult it was for the two women to understand what others were saying, given that no one there spoke either Vietnamese or Cambodian. (Though I wonder if either learned French or Chinese in school.)

Kinda like the Southern meaning behind “bless their hearts.”

The Southern meaning behind “bless their hearts” (as I understood it when I lived in the South) is exactly that: mocking.

As for Miss Nebraska, from that article I precisely got the idea she was mocking them. She has since apologised, but down near the bottom of the original article:

Summers drew ire online on Wednesday after she shared her thoughts on Rern Sinat, Miss Cambodia, and H’Hen Nie, Miss Vietnam, and their English-language skills in an Instagram Live video alongside Miss Colombia Valeria Morales.

“She’s so cute and she pretends to know so much English and then you ask her a question after having a whole conversation with her and she goes …” Summers, a 24-year-old pageant contestant from Nebraska, said when asked about Nie before she proceeded to nod and smile, mimicking her fellow contestant.

“She’s adorable,” she continued.

Summers then shifts her focus to Sinat.

“Miss Cambodia is here and doesn’t speak any English and not a single other person speaks her language. Can you imagine?” Summers said. “Francesca said that would be so isolating and I said, ‘yes, and just confusing all the time.’ Poor Cambodia.”

Heh.

And Porky’s.

While Clark did co-write the screenplay with Shepherd for A Christmas Story, it was really Jean Shepherd’s own childhood story, with names and events changed to protect the guilty and Shepherd’s narration throughout the movie (along with the fantastic cast) made the film. However, Porky’s (at least the original and the first sequel) was all Clark (with another fantastic cast), who not only directed it, but wrote the screenplay by drawing on his misspent youth in south Florida in the 50s.

Apparently they’re trying to shift gears from Nixonian “total denial” to Reaganesque “he was totally in the dark about everything!”

We’re getting to that point in Iran-Contra where the conclusions were either that the man is a criminal or an idiot. That he either knowingly took part in what happened and is thus criminally liable…or he’s such a fucking idiot that he had no control over anything and thus totally in the dark about what was going on around him.

Neither of those are good looks, especially when you’re gearing up for a reelection run.

re: #34 Dr Lizardo

BBL - off to work.

Indeed…here’s something to chew on:

Clark executive-produced the moonshine movie Moonrunners, which was used as source material for the TV series The Dukes of Hazzard. Clark later produced the 2000 TV movie The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood. Clark and others sued Warner Bros. over the studio’s 2005 movie The Dukes of Hazzard, winning a $17.5 million settlement just prior to the movie’s release.[7]

I’m glad Clark got some major coin out of WB (though he and one of his sons was killed in a head-on collision by a drunk driver less than two years later); I like Seann William Scott, Johnny Knoxville, Willie, and Burt, but that movie was a turd, because the plot sucked and Jessica Simpson couldn’t act her way out of a wet paper bag.

Are you kidding? The Lion In Winter is the best Christmas movie evah!

It’s the ultimate dysfunctional family Christmas movie. Peter O’Toole as Henry the 2nd, Katherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Anthony Hopkins as the gay and terribly conflicted Richard the Lionheart, Nigel Terry as the sniveling John Lackland (who capitulated to the Lords and signed the Magna Carta), and Timothy Dalton, in his first movie role as Philip the 2nd, the young French King.

It’s glorious.

Die Hard is #2 (Ho Ho Ho, Now I’ve got a machine gun).

Inveterate Liar Sarah Huckabee Sanders Hopes Y’all Will Remember How ‘Honest’ She Was (Wonkette)

After 500 years working as the White House Press Secretary, soul snatcher and country-ass liar Sarah Huckabee Sanders is set to be packing her shit as the “Cheers” theme song plays on her iTunes. Stepping lightly across the carpeted floors in the White House press office, she will place the final memento into her cardboard box and exhale a sigh of relief. “Sigh.” Proudly, she will think on how she outlasted far more talented and valuable people at the White House. She’ll tell you exactly why that was. “If I hadn’t been so pure, honest, and good, wouldn’t I be a jailbird like Michael Cohen, or on my way like Flynn?” See? That fake quote we just invented for Sanders is very truthful.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders has given these 500 years of her life to this nation, and the least we can do is remember her as honest, courageously truthful, and a bold non-liar. She demands her legacy be remembered as TRUTH.

Our family Christmas tradition in Germany involves watching the Winnetou westerns on TV, based on the series of books by Karl May, a German author from Chemitz who never visited the American West until he had written his novels (Much like Ohio dentist and author Zane Grey)

They are filmed in Yugoslavia and feature the same three saguaro cacti moved to different locations.

Germans seem generally amazed that we Americans do not know all about Apache brave Winnetou and his white companion, Old Shatterhand.

Government Requests Harsh New Conditions Governing Joshua Schulte’s Access to Classified Discovery (Goes to Emptywheel, more at the link).

You may recall Schulte is the CIA leaker alleged to have leaked CIA hacking tools to Wilileaks in the name of transparency (and his libertarian leanings).

When we last heard from Joshua Schulte, he had been thrown in solitary in response to FBI’s discovery that he had a cellphone in his jail cell at Metropolitan Correctional Center, after which FBI discovered he had other devices and 13 email and social media accounts.

In or about early October 2018, the Government learned that Schulte was using one or more smuggled contraband cellphones to communicate clandestinely with third parties outside of the MCC. The Government and the FBI immediately commenced an investigation into Schulte’s conduct at the MCC. That investigation involved, among other things, the execution of six search warrants and the issuance of dozens of grand jury subpoenas and pen register orders. Pursuant to this legal process, in the weeks following the Government’s discovery of Schulte’s conduct at the MCC, the FBI has searched, among other things, the housing unit at the MCC in which Schulte was detained; multiple contraband cellphones (including at least one cellphone used by Schulte that is protected with significant encryption); approximately 13 email and social media accounts (including encrypted email accounts); and other electronic devices.

Today, the government asked for supplemental protective order governing Schulte’s access to a special secure facility from which he can review classified discovery. Among other things, it requires his attorney to be searched for devices upon entering the facility, it requires him to remain in manacles throughout the time he is there, and sets up a clean team to monitor both what happens in the room and the computer the defense uses to review discovery.

Someone from the EU’s side needs to tell May, “Look, here’s the deal. There is nothing to re-negotiate. It’s a done deal. You need to explain to your people, your parliament and your party, that this is it; there’s nothing left to talk about. And more importantly, you need to explain to your people, in clear and concise language, what’s going to happen if or when your country crashes out of the European Union, and that’s looking increasingly likely; the British public needs to be prepared for such a scenario. But that’s all up to you and your government. The European Court of Justice has ruled that you can, via democratic norms and procedures, revoke Article 50 unilaterally and end this absolute madness, this fever dream of “Rule Britannia”. For God’s sake, it’s not up to us to save your bacon; it’s up to you.”

They might be willing to clarify some wording, but not give in on anything that will make it more attractive to those MPs who are currently opposed to it.

May fully grasps the situation, but she also knows that the only thing available to grasp at this point are straws. Plastic bendy ones at that…

Needs to be shorter. Something like, “That was our last and only offer. You have two choices. Eat crow and say it was all a big mistake. Or leave the EU, and see it was all a big mistake. Bye Felicia.”

I suspect that deep down, she knows that she (nor anyone else) cannot deliver the rainbows and unicorns Brexit that was promised. And it seems to me that she lacks the mettle to go to the public and bluntly say, “I’m sorry, but what you’ve voted for is essentially an impossibility”.

I think that many on the Leave side are probably most horrified at the prospect of having to admit they were wrong. I’ve seen language used to refer to the idea of an Article 50 revocation as a “national humiliation”. They’re more worried about being told they were wrong than anything else.

I have a feeling that some of the biggest Brexit supporters among the MP’s are probably disaster capitalists, just waiting like vultures to pick clean the carcass of the UK.

95
Dr Lizardo  Dec 14, 2018 • 3:15:17am

In Brexit-related news, there’s this:

Boris Johnson has been warned he has just hours to respond to claims he lied about the UK sending £350,000,000 a week to Brussels - or face prosecution. The clock is ticking for the Vote Leave figurehead after a private prosecutor announced plans to take him to court over figures plastered over his big red bus.

……….

The former Foreign Secretary was notified on November 16 of the intention to bring a private court case over alleged misconduct in public office. He was given 28 days to reply and that deadline expires at the end of Friday December 14.

So far Mr Johnson and his team have remained silent. Mr Ball told metro.co.uk there was no legal requirement for Mr Johnson to respond and it was purely a ‘courtesy’ for him ‘to present his own version of events’.

Teh China givez Trumpy a three-month reprieve. Or Elon Musk. Take your pick.

China will roll back an extra tariff it slapped on US car imports for three months, the State Council, the government cabinet, announced Friday, in a likely boon to US electric car maker Tesla.

The tariff will be rolled back to 15 per cent - the tariff now applied to all foreign car imports - from the 40 per cent rate China imposed in July in retaliation for the first round of US tariffs on Chinese imports imposed that month. The reprieve will commence at the start of the new year.

Tesla, which is competing against dominant domestic electric car makers in the world’s largest auto market, announced after the State Council’s move that it will reduce the prices of its cars sold in China. For example, the price of its Model S 75D will be cut by 84,200 yuan (aboutUS$12,200), according to the company’s Chinese website.

China also bought 2 million tonnes of soybeans earlier this week.

When corporation uses profits for stock buy back it’s deciding that returning capital to shareholders is better for business than investing in their products or workers. Tax code encourages this. No surprise we have work life that is unstable & low paying.

You know, Marco, there is a big discrepancy between work as a social and moral virtue and labor as an economic commodity. We know which aspect your party pays lip service to and which aspect it sucks up to…

There is something the fuck wrong with a country in which it is impossible to support a family above the poverty level at minimum wage.

Kircaldy man giving Florida man a run for his money

A police investigation has been launched after a man died after falling from a town’s Christmas tree.

The alarm was raised in the early hours of Friday when the injured man was found in Kirkcaldy by people leaving a nearby nightclub.

…The death is being treated as non-suspicious and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances. A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal

I am not one to wager based on others’ misfortune, otherwise I would bet a bottle of finest single malt that alcohol was somehow involved in this incident.

Dr Lizardo  Dec 14, 2018 • 5:16:01am

So, I’m fairly sure most Lizards are familiar with the (now-jailed) Turkish creationist Adnan Oktar. I’m seeing in Turkish media sources that the authorities have been able to more or less answer that burning question: Where the fuck does this guy’s money come from?

Well, aside from grifting the gullible, his little cult was apparently also into money laundering and setting up fraudulent import/export business. Like this (courtesy of Google Translate, cleaned up by yours truly):

-Creating limited and joint-stock companies with funds transferred to the organization, the commercial legal process begins.

- The new company is recognized in the market and after being secured, it begins taking out loans. Revenues from the company are then transferred to the personal accounts of members of the [Oktar] organization. Then, after awhile, the company goes bankrupt. The money of the companies that go bankrupt is invested in other company accounts which have no commercial activity related to the organization.

- Then, the money is sent abroad to members of the organization outside Turkey who have established offshore accounts; that money is transferred to these offshore accounts. Following that step, the money is reintroduced via repatriation as if it is related to the exports of companies that are involved in the organization.

Also, blackmail, extortion, etc.

In any event, it looks like Oktar and some of his cronies are going to the slammer for a long time if they’re found guilty of the crimes they’ve been accused of. Interestingly, more than a few of his inner circle have flipped on him and have turned state’s evidence in exchange for immunity.

Grifters gonna grift - seems to be a fairly universal constant.

Here’s a story from HaberTurk, who’ve been covering this since day one. It’s in Turkish, so you’ll need to use Chrome or another translating tool.

I’m actually quite surprised how blatant the acts were in this thread. According to the sentencing document, some people in the GOP/NRA knew full well they were working with the Russians.

Conservatives went from hating the Communist Russians in the 1950s to inviting post-Communist Russians to help run the US government in the 2010s. What a difference 60 years makes.

The Manchurian Candidate got it all wrong. Enemies don’t need to run a brainwashed presidential candidate. All they need is a hot redhead (or blonde, as in Anna Chapman) to lead influential politicians around by their dicks, and the gates of Washington, DC, will magically open for them.

When my sister was about seven she was hospitalised. She shared a room with another girl the same age.

That girl had parents who were hidebound about gender roles. They brought her flowers for a get well gift. My mother brought my sister a toy dump truck.

According to my mother, any time the other girl’s parents weren’t around, she would ask my sister if she could play with the dump truck. (Apparently that is more interesting to a kid than flowers.)

What the Hell Is Wrong With Paul Ryan? (The Nation, more at the link):

What the hell is wrong with Paul Ryan? At a point when the whole world is demanding urgent action to end the Saudi-led bombardment and starvation of Yemen, the Speaker of the House has been scheming to prevent congressional debate on a resolution to get the United States out of a humanitarian crisis.

This is not about partisanship or ideology. As Ryan was blocking action in the House Wednesday, 11 Senate Republicans—including some of the chamber’s most conservative members—voted with Democrats to open the Senate debate on ending US military support for the Saudi Arabia’s assault on Yemen.

The Senate bill was sponsored by Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Chris Murphy (D-CT), and Mike Lee (R-UT)

Speaking of bomb threats, US CERT (Homeland Security’s cyber crime unit) noted that in the worldwide E-mailed bomb threat to libraries, government offices, and businesses, they note it should be reported as spam to their spam collection site ( spam@uce.gov ) but also should be reported to your local FBI Field Office or satellite office (because bomb threat).

The FBI is trying to get a handle on it to find out who is perpetrating the threat to have them arrested (if here) or reported (if in another country so they can arrest that person).

Racist Columbia University Dipwad Not Racist, According To Racist Columbia University Dipwad (Wonkette, more at the link):

This weekend, an extremely twerpy Columbia University student named Julian von Abele (of course) went viral after video emerged of him screaming his head off about how great white people are to a bunch of students of color. It was … well, it was the kind of thing that happens now, every month or so these days! (It happened before “these days” too, we just didn’t have video phones and Twitter in “those days.”)

As Aala Nasir, the woman who initially posted the video, said, it was disappointing, but not surprising.

re: #83 Dr Lizardo

So, looking at Brexit news, the EU is - again - firmly telling PM May that will be no re-negotiations. And May, it seems, doesn’t quite grasp this.

The UK has three doors to choose from: another referendum. May’s plan or a hard Brexit. And they keep resolutely demanding a fourth that includes their flying pink unicorn that farts rainbows and shits ice cream.

Why so many white people think they’re great simply because of our skin color is beyond me. I’m not ashamed to be white but I’m not exactly proud either. So called superior white culture is why my irish family members starved during the Famine years, why the Hapsburgs didn’t give my Slavic family members self-rule. To kind of rephrase what Muhammad Ali, no black man ever called my family dumb micks who deserved to starve because of his poor work ethic and Roman Catholicism.

From the LAreview of books review:

That Peterson is also vehemently anti-Marxist would be relatively unremarkable were it not for the fact that, in many of his online disquisitions about what he sees as a left-wing takeover of campus culture, he uses the terms “Marxism” and “postmodernism” almost interchangeably. Not only are these two schools of thought very different from one another, they are also in certain respects mutually antagonistic. You don’t need an MA in critical theory to figure it out: the travails of the Democratic Party during the primaries for 2016’s presidential election highlighted, in a very public and destructive way, the ideological fault lines in US progressive politics. The bitter schism between the Hillary Clinton camp — which mobilized aggressively around identity politics — and the old-school leftists who rallied around Bernie Sanders ultimately helped clear Donald Trump’s path to the presidency. (Historically, the burgeoning of identity politics in US campus culture in the 1980s and ’90s went hand in hand with the ascendancy of postmodernist ideas that explicitly repudiated Marxism.) It’s not just that this sloppy use of language exposes Peterson as an intellectual lightweight; the tendency to causally conflate various disparate phenomena that one happens not to like — in this instance, postmodernism, Marxism, and political correctness — is the calling card of the paranoiac.

Not sure who to root for in the circular firing squad that is Cernovich vs Peterson, but I thought this comment on Peterson was rather interesting.

SDNY is notable for prosecuting financial crimes.

EDNY is notable for going after terrorists and foreign bad actors.

And in any case, IIRC, Arizona may be one of those states with a same-party rule for replacement Senators.

One of the cheapest and best exercises to do is ‘walking’. Initially, you may want to join him in a walk. Think up a course, around the block, around two blocks or even more to add some interest. Walking to a half-mile away from home means you have done a full mile once you return. What ever he does…a block or few…repeat it after about an hour to build endurance. Aerobic exercise daily really works. I have a friend who hurt his knee and Doc told him he would always limp. He began walking around his fenced-in back yard using his new cane. After awhile he no longer needed to support himself. After 6 or 8 months he no longer needed the cane and walks normally since. His path around the yard was visible a long time till the reseeded. Get tough.

10 or more bomb threats here in Columbus yesterday. One was for Capital University in Bexely, a landlocked suburb a couple miles east of me on Main Street. They called classes and abandoned the buildings.

I find it quite ironic that in seeking to prevent Scotland going independent from the rest of the UK, they’re seriously considering declaring independence from the UK Conservatives.

Yeah, I saw the tariff lowering bit on CNN’s website, apparently it’s part of the G-20 deal they struck for a truce. Of course, that article also pointed out that because of Trump’s idiotic trade war, American auto exports to China were down 30% this year.

Two schools in our town were evacuated. One went to a local Jewish Center, the other to a community center until the all clear was given.

Considering that law enforcement has to treat each as a live-valid threat, that means bringing out bomb squads, K-9 units, and smaller towns have to bring in extra resources to address the issue. Even larger communities see their LEO overwhelmed by these and call on neighboring towns for assistance. When you make these kinds of blanket threats that have to be investigated across a region, let alone the nation, you’re inflicting significant costs on law enforcement and could lead to accidents, injuries, etc., on top of everything else. There are reports of false alarms and responding units getting into accidents all too frequently.

There are costs to these threats, and whoever perpetrated them should be liable for them as well (some states do treat these as false alarms and pranks are treated as crimes).

Big “IF”.
Scottish sentiments are easy to understand: with the UK part of the EU, they’re a quasi-autonomous regional state, with a modicum of self-government, and profitable economic advantages wrt a larger entity. With the UK “independent”, they’re back to their traditional relationship with “England”: i.e., a poor, backward province with limited political leverage.
I’m sure that Brexit IS going to spur a second independence referendum in Scotland: the big problem, though is still going to be there even if it goes through. There is no guarantee that the EU would accept an independent Scotland as a member: IIRC, acceptance has to be unanimous by ALL the other EU member states: and Spain (because of Catalan separatism) has always been thought to be a stumbling-block.

Dayton Daily News - NRA spent millions to keep Ohio Sen. Portman in office

WASHINGTON —
During the 2016 election, the National Rifle Association and its donors gave Sen. Rob Portman’s campaign $9,900 — a drop in the bucket of the $25 million Portman raised and an argument against the notion that the gun rights group had “bought” the support of the state’s junior senator.

But three other numbers are also worth considering: $242,708; $1.55 million and $3.06 million.

The first represents the amount that the NRA spent on independent expenditures such as ads supporting Portman in 2016. The second represents the amount spent opposing Democrat Ted Strickland, who Portman defeated in 2016.

The third is what the organization has spent on Portman since 1990, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

The LA Times has an interesting piece about Trump’s ongoing demise. This part, in particular, jumped out at me:

Several others close to the president, granted anonymity to speak openly about conversations with him, said Trump already senses diminishing respect and worries about losing support from powerful financial donors and Republican lawmakers as his legal and political troubles worsen.

“They’re still not saying it publicly, but most Republicans on the Hill understand … that it’s not going to end well, that it’s going to be bad,” said a longtime Republican operative close to party leadership.

They’ll say it on background, but they won’t say it publicly… yet. When the dam breaks, it’s going to be very, very bad.

And then they cap off the story with this:

While his difficulty filling the job highlights the president’s isolation, Schwartz, Trump’s ghost writer, said Trump almost certainly doesn’t agree.

“He doesn’t feel the ordinary human emotions most of us do,” he said. “For example, he’s free of shame because he has no conscience, nor any self-awareness. So while his behavior certainly suggests he feels increasing fear and isolation, he would be the last one to know it.”

Trump is a sociopath with no redeeming social features or characters. He’s a con artist whose beliefs mirror that of the GOP base - white nationalist, bigoted, and misogynist.

The base wont revolt and turn on Trump if more indictments and impeachment drops on Trump, because they think Trump’s just like them. They’re impervious to facts or logic.

The GOP elites aren’t impervious to facts or logic, but they’ve been decades cultivating a know nothing base and they are divorced from reality as a result. The elites wont act because that’d cause the base to turn on them too (for turning on a corrupt Trump).

I’d take the job, but I’d be fired before the end of my first day. I’d take a hammer to every cellphone in the president’s possession, as well as most all of the TVs in the Oval and Residence. I’d also fire Ivanka and Jared.

So, yeah, it probably wouldn’t last until lunch.

At this point, the only reason to go to work for Trump is to convince him to resign before the feces really hits the ventilation.

The holidays are trying to kill me.

First I come home Tuesday night from visiting The Ancestral Home, and The Older Boy has not only made Mac and Cheese for me, but also bought a bunch of holiday treats - stollen, panetonne, pfeffernussen.

Then the next day, because my boss and his boss were in town, we went out to dinner where I ate entirely too much.

Then yesterday, the company had its holiday lunch, where I again ate entirely too much.

Then Mrs. FBW texted me that I should pick up ice cream because she was feeling blue and The Younger Boy was sick, so I got comfort snacks and ate too many of those.

Then this morning, a coworker brought a flourless chocolate cake with whipped cream to accompany it for the office.

Next week, it’ll be Christmas cookies.

France to Probe Possible Russian Influence on Yellow Vest Riots

France opened a probe into possible Russian interference behind the country’s Yellow Vest protests, after reports that social-media accounts linked to Moscow have increasingly targeted the movement.

According to the Alliance for Securing Democracy, about 600 Twitter accounts known to promote Kremlin views have begun focusing on France, boosting their use of the hashtag #giletsjaunes, the French name for the Yellow Vest movement. French security services are looking at the situation, Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Sunday in a radio interview with RTL.

Interesting question: if Scotland does vote for “independence” from the UK, is the British Sovereign still going to be Queen/King of Scotland? Or are they likely to declare themselves the Republic of Scotland?

Short answer: yes. The Union of Crowns is seperate to the Union of Parliaments. And the official policy of the SNP since its inception has been that, whilst it rejects the Union of Parliaments, it respects the Union of Crowns i.e. Queen Elizabeth would be head of state in an independent Scotland. More modern SNP policy added that, by implication, Scotland would join the Commonwealth.
